The aim of this research was to study the absorption characteristics of thermally dried fine coal from South African collieries. After milling to ?150 µm and pressure filtration, the samples were subjected to either air drying or thermal drying at 150°C. The samples were then put into a climate box at 28°C and at three different relative humidity levels, namely 30, 60 and 94 per cent. It was found that the equilibrium moisture content of thermally dried coal at a specific relative humidity was lower than that of air dried coal. The relationship between the equilibrium moisture content and relative humidity is described by 1 ? RH = exp (-KTMen). There was no relationship between the volatile matter content and equilibrium moisture content, but there was an increase in the equilibrium moisture content of the coal with an increase in mineral content. The moisture uptake rate increased with an increase in temperature and a decrease in particle size. A model is discussed that fitted the experimental data and gave a good prediction for changes in the conditions. There was no evidence of greater moisture absorption by thermally dried coal. Rock engineering is concerned with the design of rock structures generated by mining activities. Therefore, rock engineering designs have major implications for the safe recovery of mineral deposits and operating costs. The paper deals with a few challenges facing rock mechanics engineers operating in the hard rock underground mining environment in South Africa. Finally, examples are included, which may assist rock mechanics engineers in providing better designs, which could ultimately lead to further improvement in safety and lower operating costs.

Strainbursts are common in overstressed brittle rock around deep mine openings. Such failures are characterized by a biaxial state of stress in the plane of the opening boundary. A zone of compressive stresses imposes initial failures near or at the surface of the opening that results in spalling of thin slabs of rock roughly parallel to the free face. While the failure of rock under biaxial loading conditions is increasingly common in deep underground mines, only a few representative laboratory studies have been reported in the literature, without emphasis on rockbursting aspects, and none in the last decade. This paper presents the results of a testing program on a granite rock type. Biaxial testing, conducted on 100 mm cubic samples, was carried out to examine the influence of lateral confinement and loading rate on the rock’s ultimate strength. The paper reports the test results in terms of normalized biaxial failure envelope s1/sc-s2/sc. A discussion of the failure mechanisms observed is presented. Les coups de toits de déformations sont choses communes dans le rock cassant surcontraint en place autour des ouvertures minières profondes. De telles ruptures sont caractérisées par un état de contraintes biaxiales dans le plan de la périphérie de l’ouverture. Une zone de contraintes compressives impose des ruptures initiales à ou près de la surface de l’ouverture, qui produit des relâchements de minces plaques de roc plus ou moins parallel à la surface. Bien que les ruptures de roc sous des conditions biaxiales sont de plus en plus communes dans les mines à grandes profondeurs, il n’y a eu que quelques études représentatives en laboratoire de publiées, sans emphase sur des aspects de coups de terrains, et aucunes publiées depuis la dernière décennie. L’article présente les résultats d’une campagne d’essais appliquée à un type de granit. La campagne d’essais biaxiaux, sur des échantillons cubiques de 100 mm, avait pour objectif d’examiner l’influence du confinement latéral et le taux de chargement sur la résistance ultime du roc. Cet article fait part des résultats en terme de l’enveloppe de rupture biaxiale normalisée s1/sc-s2/sc. Une discussion sur les mécanismes de ruptures observés est présentée. Solche Brüche sind von einer zweiachsigen Spannung in der Ebene der Grenze der Öffnung charakterisiert. Eine Zone von Druckspannungen verursacht initiale Brüche, entweder an der Öberflache der Öffnung oder in der Nähe. Davon scheiden sich dünne Felsplatten mehr oder weniger parallele mit der freien Wand. Obwohl Felsbrüche unter zweiachsiger Beanspruchung immer mehr häufig in tiefen Minen beobachtet sind, hat man über nur einige repräsentative Laborversuche in der Literatur berichtet. Diese Studien diskutieren das Thema ohne Betonung auf Felsbrüchen, und keine sind in den letzten zehn Jahren erschienen. Die vorliegene Arbeit gibt die Ergebnisse eines Testprogramms auf einem Typ von Granitfels. Durch zweiachsige Prüfungen von kubischen Proben mit Seitenlangen von 100 mm sollte man den Einfluss von seitlicher Ermittlung und der Beanspruchungsrate auf die Bruchfestigkeit des Felsen studieren. Man findet auch die Prüfergebnisse in bezug auf das normalisierte, zweiachsige Bruchkriterium s1/sc-s2/sc. Die beobachteten Bruchmechanismen sind auch diskutiert.

The typical reactions which the reductants undergo during ferroalloy production are reviewed, and identified as reaction with CO2 and with SiO, and dissolution in metal. Available reactivity tests for these three reactions are reviewed. It is proposed that it is worthwhile considering dissolution kinetics as a reactivity parameter. Greater crystallinity of the reductant decreases CO2 and SiO reactivity, but increases dissolution rates.

I?ve been asked to appraise the global role of coal and mining, and the best place I can think of to begin is with the World watch Institute, which purports to monitor all things global. Last fall the institute?s magazine, entitled World Watch, in a cover story called for a worldwide campaign to outlaw the use of coal before this century?s end. To my mind the article began the campaign. However, the institute had to admit that no such ban will be possible unless there is special help and heavy intervention?that is, novel policies and punitive taxes. I?ll quote directly from the magazine to underscore the point: ?without them the market will continue to deceive us into thinking coal is cheap, abundant and irreplaceable?.

By the time a reagent is finally accepted by a mine for use on its plant it could have gone through several screening and evaluation stages. These stages may include laboratory and plant evaluation testwork. This paper outlines the steps that were followed to select, design and implement a frother for KONKOLA COPPER MINES PLC Nchanga Copper Concentrator in Zambia. It discusses initial frother screening work conducted at the Betachem metallurgical laboratory and the subsequent laboratory screening testwork conducted at Nchanga Concentrator. A modified Bikerman test method is discussed which was used to design a frother for the Nchanga flotation plant. The paper also gives an account of several plant scale trials conducted on Nchanga flotation plant and discusses the plant results, frother consumption patterns and some commercial concerns, before the product was finally accepted by the mine.

Outsourcing of specialist and non-continuous services is common practice in international mining operations. There is an increasing trend towards this practice in South Africa as a result of the major organisational changes that have taken place in the industry, and as lower revenues and production cost pressures have reduced profit margins. Many specialist functions have been outsourced in the industry for a long time, an example being shaft sinking, which is undertaken by specialist shaft sinking contractors. In the professional services area, some activities have been outsourced, for example the design and construction supervision of tailings dams, but mining related activities such as geology, mine planning and scheduling, engineering, ventilation, and rock engineering, have traditionally been carried out by in-house staff. In this paper some of the industry problems which have led to an increase in outsourcing of professional services are considered. Then the pros and cons of outsourcing are dealt with before outlining the factors which should be taken into account in choosing an outsourcing partner.

The separation of nickel and cobalt from calcium, magnesium and manganese by solvent extraction using synergistic mixtures of carboxylic acids was studied. Addition of certain viable synergists to commercially available tertiary branched carboxylic acids, such as Versatic 10 (Shell) or Neodecanoic acid (Exxon), produced large synergistic shifts (?pH50) in the pH50values for nickel, and small antagonistic shifts (negative ?pH50values) in the extraction of calcium. Under the initial test conditions used (0.50 M each of Neodecanoic acid and the Mintek synergist, in xylene) a large separation (pH50Ca? pH50Ni= 3.09 pH units) between nickel and calcium in their extraction from 1.00 M sodium nitrate solutions was obtained, compared with only 1.11 pH units in the absence of the synergist. The selectivity series for the extraction of divalent base metals from 0.333 M sodium sulphate solutions by 0.50 M Neodecanoic acid and 0.25 M of the Mintek synergist in C12-C13aliphatic diluent was found to lie in the order (with pH50values in parentheses): Cu(3.42) > Ni (5.08) > Zn (5.58) > Co (5.73) > Mn (6.62) > Ca (7.48) >Mg (8.25). In batch counter current experiments, a simulated leach liquor containing (in gL-1): Ni 5, Mg 5, Mn 2, Co 0.5, Ca 0.5, Cu 0.1and Zn 0.1 was contacted with the mixed extractant in three stages at unit phase ratio and an equilibrium pH of 5.9. The recovery of nickel was 99.9 per cent and that of cobalt was 84.7 per cent, whilst the co-extractions of manganese, calcium and magnesium were 2.7,1.5 and 0.04 per cent, respectively. The recovery of cobalt can be enhanced by employing a slightly higher pH, although this will also increase the extraction of manganese, calcium and magnesium somewhat. Nearly quantitative stripping (99 per cent) of nickel from the loaded organic phase was achieved in a single contact at an organic-to-aqueous phase ratio of 4 using a simulated spent electrolyte containing 39 gL-1sulphuric acid and 33 gL-1nickel,thereby producing an ?advance electrolyte? containing 57 gL-1nickelat pH 3.5. Loading of acid into the organic phase was very slight, amounting to only 0.002 M H+in contact with the above-mentioned spent electrolyte. Anisotropy is a characteristic of intact foliated metamorphic rocks (slates, gneisses, phyllites, schists). Testing was used to establish the anisotropic behaviour of selected gneissic rocks. The effect of anisotropy on various mechanical properties (strength, deformation) and dynamic properties (wave velocity) was examined. The rock samples were also tested at successively higher confining pressures in order to evaluate the effect of anisotropic behaviour at high overburden pressures.

In view of the limited reserves of good-quality coking coals in South Africa, Iscor has been involved in direct reduction since the middle sixties. Since the early seventies, its interest in direct reduction was stimulated further by a swing towards' continuous casting, which, in turn, contributed to a shortage of the scrap supply for electric-arc-furnace (EAP) steelmaking. The knowledge of the geological sequence and hydrological conditions in the area of portals was the basis for the design of the entry of the highway into tunnel Trojane. Mudstone, claystone and sandstone dominate the rock layering, which is tectonically reworked and contains structural anomalies. The complexity of the sequence makes it impossible to survey all the relevant features along the full 3km length of the tunnel. Sudden and frequent transitions between litological sequences impose potential instabilities and make the excavation of the tunnel particularly difficult. The initial survey established the zones of potential failures. These were monitored using topographic survey and inclinometers with an aim to make further geotechnical analyses more reliable and adjusted to the ground conditions. The analyses of the wall construction and the results of the monitoring showed that the design of the retaining wall was adequate. La connaissance de la séquence géologique et des conditions hydrologiques dans l'aire des portails a été la base pour la planification de l'entrée de l'autoroute dans le tunnel Trojane. Le schiste, l'argilite et le grès dominent la couche rocheuse qui est tectoniquement transformée et contient les anomalies structurales. A cause de la complexité de la séquence, il est impossible de revoir toutes les particularités le long des 3 kilomètres de la toute longueur du tunnel. Les transitions soudaines et fréquentes entre les séquences lithologiques imposent l'instabilité potentielle et font l'excavation du tunnel particulièrement difficile. La revue initiale a été établie sur les zones où il existe l'éboulement potential. Elles étaient contrôlées à l'aide de la revue topographique et de l'inclinomètre pour que les analyses géotechniques suivantes soient plus sûres et adaptées aux conditions du sol. Les analyses de la construction des murs et des résultats du contrôle ont montré que la planification du mur réteneur était correspondante. Der Autobahneingang in den Trojane Tunnel war projektiert auf Basis von der Kenntnis der geologischen und hydrogeologischen Bedingungen in dem Portalgebiet. Das Gebiet besteht aus dem Tonstein und dem Sandstein. Die Schichten sind tektonisch verformt und sind deswegen sehr heterogen. Die anfaenglichen Untersuchungen haben die Zonen von den potentiellen Bruechen definiert. Weitere geotechnische Analysen waren fitted an reale geologische Bedingungen durch das Monitoring der potentiellen Bruchzonen, welches aus den topographyschen Messungen und Inklinometerdaten entstand. Die Analyse des Wandbaues und die Resultate von dem Monitoring haben erwiesen, dass die Wandprojektierung entsprechend war.

ABSTRACT: A three-dimensional elastic constitutive model for rock salt is proposed. This stress strain law takes into account the three phases of creep (transient, steady state and accelerated creep), dilatancy, as well as the failure and post failure behaviour. The model was implemented into a finite element program and validated on the results of laboratory tests and in situ measurements. A good qualitative and quantitative agreement with the test and measurement results is achieved. A stability analysis for an underground repository in rock salt is presented. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Es wird ein dreidimensionales elastisch-viskoplastisches Stoffgesetz für Steinsalz vorgestellt. Mit diesem Stoffgesetz können die drei Kriechphasen (primäres, sekundäres und tertiäres Kriechen), Dilatanz sowie das Bruch- und Nachbruchverhalten erfaßt werden. Dieses Modell wurde in ein Rechenprogramm, das auf der Methode der finiten Elemente basiert, implementiert und an Ergebnissen von Laborversuchen und in-situ-Messungen validiert. Die Versuchs- und Meßergebnisse lassen sich mit diesem Stoffgesetz qualitativ und quantitativ gut nachvollziehen. Als Anwendungsbeispiel wird der Standsicherheitsnachweis für eine Untertagedeponie im Steinsalz erläutert. RÉSUMÉ: Cet article présente un modéle constitutive élastique/viscoplastique à trois dimensions pour sel gemme. Ce modéle comprend les trois stade de fluage (fluage primaire, secondaire et tertiaire), la dilatation, le comportement de défaillance et d'après défaillance. Il est implanté dans un programme de calcul aux éléments finis. À l'aide des essais laboratoire et des mésures in situ, le modéle a été validé. Les résultats des essais et des mesures concordent qualitatifs et quantitatifs aux résultats des calculations.

With the end of the official apartheid legislation in the early 1990s, South Africa was heralded as a non-racial country. However, racial awareness has been reintroduced into the country with the Affirmative Action and Black Economic Empowerment legislation. Gender and racial transformation are the current order of the day. All organizations are required to reflect in their make-up the demographics of the population as soon as possible. Scorecard shave been drawn up to measure the rate of transformation for gender and race in organizations. The mining industry in South Africa has been in the forefront of this transformation legislation and scorecards. This paper seeks to show the effect of gender and racial transformation on mining engineering education and professionalism by analysing the changing demographics of graduating mining students at both the South African universities offering a degree in mining engineering, the professional registration of mining engineers with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA), and the membership of the Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM), the vocational institute for mining engineers. It also demonstrates the absurdity of gender and racial quotas based solely on the demographics of the current population of the country. This paper shows the degree to which mining engineering has transformed in both gender and race.

The aim of this paper is to provide an overview of existing forms of subcontracting in the South African mining industry. A descriptive framework is developed to understand different subcontracting arrangements. We argue that, in order to do so, it is important to distinguish between labour broking and gang subcontracting. Data resulting from a research project (including an analysis of historical sources, interviews with contractors and focus group interviews with mineworkers) is presented to highlight the implications of changing formations of subcontracting for the South African mining industry in the late 1990s. Apart from the subcontracting of ?traditional? functions, such as shaft sinking, access development, catering and hostel maintenance, contractors are now used in ?core? mining activities. In some instances, whole shafts are ?outsourced? to outside agencies. It is argued that certain of the subcontracting arrangements have serious implications for the ability of the mining industry to improve health and safety standards. Some of the practices can potentially result in conflict between different categories of workers, and, as a result, instability in the industry.

It is an honour to be invited as a speaker to this ICCR conference and a pleasure to be with you here in South Africa. I have been asked to talk about the competitiveness of coal versus other energy alternatives. Coal supplies nearly one-quarter of the global primary energy. Its most direct competitors are gas, nuclear and renewables. Oil is predominantly for transport fuels. Fuel oil is competitive with coal when crude is below its long-run average price and has some niche opportunities. But I will confine my comments to nuclear, renewables and particularly natural gas as the most potent current competitive threat to coal. Competitiveness is more than just cost and price; there is environmental acceptability, security or reliability and increasingly image. These factors are more of a spectrum than discrete issues. Dollars and cents remain the key issue for competitiveness but one must recognize the impact of politics in sustainable development and energy security.

The kinetics of the dissolution of colloidal silver in aerated cyanide solutions has been investigated with the aim of developing a relatively rapid and convenient method for monitoring the ?leaching power? of solutions typically used in the cyanidation process. Experimental results obtained are consistent with an electro-chemical model, in which the mixed potential is set up in the active region of the polarization curve for the anodic dissolution of silver, giving rise to a rate of dissolution which is controlled by the rate of mass transport of either cyanide or oxygen to the surface of the silver. The rate of dissolution of colloidal silver was found to respond to variations in the reactant concentrations in a similar manner to gold (and silver) in a typical free-milling ore. The use of this technique for the monitoring and control of the cyanide leach process is discussed.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B Eng Met Surface coatings persisting on zircon particles, after being leached in an acidic solution, are believed to be the cause of zircon misplacement during the electrostatic separation of heavy mineral beach sands. Electrostatic separation is employed to separate non-conductive zircon particles from more conductive rutile particles. Surface coatings on zircon particles are believed to render the non-conductive zircon particles more conductive, resulting in the contamination of the more conductive rutile stream with zircon particles. Resistivity measurements, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were performed to compare the surface characteristics of zircon particles found in the different product streams following electrostatic separation. XPS analysis showed that no significant difference exists in the outermost layer of the zircon particles found in the different streams. SEM analysis showed the existing surface coatings on zircon particles from different product streams to have similar chemical compositions. Resistivity measurements confirmed the results obtained from both the XPS and SEM analysis; no significant differences in the resitivities were observed. From the results obtained it suggests that surface coatings present on zircon particles are unlikely the primary cause of zircon misplacement. Zircon losses can possibly be a result of machine related aspects. Key words: XPS; SEM; resistivity measurements; electrostatic separation; heavy mineral sands.

Mining is an inherently risky business; from the technical, environmental, social, and economic uncertainties associated with advancing an exploration prospect to a viable project to the operating, market, and safety risks and uncertainties attached to a developed mine. Since we cannot totally escape the risk and uncertainty related to resource projects, as an industry we should improve our presentation of the upside and downside risks in the context of the project?s development path and maturity. More transparent, consistent, and balanced views of technical confidence will better inform both internal and external stakeholders about the expected risk in the project. International reporting codes set out the minimum standards, recommendations, and guidelines for public reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources, and Mineral Reserves. However, the reporting code principles of transparency and materiality are largely subject to the interpretation of the competent person(s), which may introduce a degree of subjectivity in reporting, particularly the level of disclosure regarding supporting information. It is fundamental that Mineral Resources, Mineral Reserves, and study outcomes are reported so as to unambiguously present the level of inherent technical uncertainty (or confidence) in a project, while conveying a balanced view of the opportunities a project presents. Reporting needs to consider various stakeholders who may rely on this information, and present the data in the context of the changing risk profile associated with project development paths and project maturity. This paper discusses the interdependence of resource-to-reserve conversion, the consideration of various technical-economic study types, and the level of confidence conveyed to stakeholders relying on these technical reports and other company public announcements.
