The Bureau of Mines investigated methods for selectively eluting mercury, silver, and gold from strong-base anion-exchange resins, including Rohm and Haas resins lRA-430 and 900 and Dow Chemical resins 2lK, SMA-I, and SBR. Resins were typically loaded to 145 oz/st of each metal. Loaded resins were eluted with H2S04, NaCl-H Cl, NaOCl, and NaCl04 solutions. The resins tested had similar elution characteristics for mercury and precious metals. The best selective elution scheme was achieved by eluting in a column with 2N H2S04 to recover 99 to 100 pct Hg, with 200 giL NaCl in IN HCI to rec;ver 99 to 100 pct Ag, and with 2M NaCl04 to recover 79 to 89 pct Au.

The Bureau of Mines has developed test procedures and criteria for evaluating explosive reactivity of explosive-contaminated solid waste substances generated by U.S. Army ammunition plants. These substances are produced as explosive-contaminated sludge from wastewater treatment plants, residues from the burning of munitions and explosives on open ground, and residues from deactivation furnaces. The characterization of explosive reactivity is a prerequisite for disposal of such waste materials, which may be contaminated with primary explosives, propellants, or pyrotechnic materials. The Bureau has proposed two tests for this purpose. These tests were developed to evaluate the explosive reactivity as defined in Title 40, Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), part 261.23(a)(6) and (7). These are the Bureau's gap and internal ignition tests, which determine the sensitivity to shock and thermal stimuli, respectively. This report also includes gap and internal ignition reference data for typical blasting agents, high explosives, propellants, and marginally reactive substances. These reference data were used to establish test criteria. The Bureau has evaluated over 400 samples of contaminated soil, sludge, and burning residues using these two test methods.

The modest mineral industry of Afghanistan continued to suffer adversely from internal disorders that were essentially the result of the continued presence of elements of the armed forces of the U.S.S.R. Despite press reports near yearend intimating that the Soviets might reduce troop strength in Afghanistan, there were no indications of any significant numeric reductions. Indeed, there were clear demonstrations of heightened military actions along the Afghani-Pakistani border, including bombing raids on settlement sites for Afghanis within the territorial limits of Pakistan, actions hardly demonstrative of conditions indicative of Soviet withdrawal.

The Bureau of Mines is engaged in a continuing research effort toward the recovery of alumina from kaolinitic clay and other nonbauxitic domestic minerals. Hydrochloric acid extraction of calcined clay is among the acid processes under consideration. Although aluminum is easily leached from calcined clay, the presence of fines and slimes in the leached residue has hindered the application of this and other acid leaching processes. A clay feed preparation method was therefore developed that eliminated the slimy nature and the separation problems normally associated with leached clay residues. The preparation process consists of crushing the raw clay to minus 20 mesh, dampening the crushed clay with a fine water mist while tumbling on a rotating disk, and calcining the misted clay at 750° C. The misting process increases residue settling rates threefold to 9 cm/min (18 ft/hr) and filtration rates by two orders of magnitude. Leaching-kinetics were determined for misted clay feeds in a batch, stirred-tank reactor. Rapid leaching occurred during the first 85 to 90 pct of the extraction. The linear relationship of extraction to time during this initial phase corresponded to a zero order reaction with a rate constant of around 10 pct/min.

Rank the dust knockdown (airborne capture) ability of six different types of water spray nozzles, Approach A fixed quantity of dust is released into a large, closed chamber in a laboratory. Water sprays are turned on inside the chamber and their effectiveness on the dust cloud is evaluated from the rate at which the dust disappears. This method better simulates dust suppression underground than methods tried earlier. The results of the laboratory test were confirmed by conducting tests on a full-scale mod-el continuous miner face where dust levels were measured in the return airway. Results of the Closed Chamber Tests The graph indicates that atomizing nozzles provide the best use of water for dust scrubbing. However, use of these nozzles is limited by their susceptibility to damage and clogging. Hollow-cone nozzles perform almost as well as atomizing nozzles. Test results also indicate that full-cone, venturi-assisted, and flat-fan spray cones are about two-thirds as effective as hollow-cone nozzles. The least effective were venturi nozzles designed for moving air. The most significant advantage of hollow-cone nozzles over other nozzles tested is reduced clogging due to larger orifice size. The hollow-cone nozzle used in the test and depicted by the graph was type BD-3 manufactured by Spraying Systems Co., Wheaton, IL. This nozzle is already used on many continuous miners. This Bureau of Mines report is concerned with a theoretical study of the aerodynamic response of a single mine entry to flame-induced disturbance. The unsteady, one/dimensional, compressible flow equations were solved using the method of characteristics. This study was primarily undertaken to determine the feasibility of extending the method of characteristics to study the aero-dynamic response of complex mine networks. It was demonstrated that although the technique has merit in studying the complex wave interaction in single entries, it appears to be too unwieldly and too expensive for network analysis. Effort was also directed at a further study of the dispersion and filtering characteristic of aerodynamic disturbances in mine passageways.

Diamond-bit performance and cost data accumulated by the Bureau of Mines in core-drilling schists reveal significant trends of economic interest. Low-quality, small-size drill bort were the most economical. The percentage of core recovery, type and size of bit, and bit matrix are also correlated with bit performance and costs. Detailed analyses of the factors affecting diamond-bit performances and costs are assessed in the tables, graphs, and discussion.

A method for concentration of the nickel-cobalt-bearing mineral, siegenite, from a table middling has been developed by the Bureau of Mines at Rolla, Mo. The table middling is composed of a complex series of sulfide minerals, occurring in mill operations in the southeast Missouri "lead belt." In these operations the siegenite is lost as a separate concentrate, being diverted to other products. The procedure also includes recovering commercial-grade concentrates of copper and lead. A low-grade zinc concentrate, a potential coproduct, was also made.

This chapter summarizes data on crude nonfuel mineral production for the United States, its island possessions, and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. Also included are tables that show the principal nonfuel mineral commodities exported from and imported into the United States and that compare world and U.S. mineral production. The detailed data from which these tables were derived are contained in the individual commodity chapters of Volume I and in the State chapters of Volume II of this edition of the Minerals Yearbook. Although crude mineral production may be measured at any of several stages of extraction and processing. the stage of measurement used in this chapter is what is normally termed ?mine output." It usually refers to minerals or ores in the form in which they are first extracted from the ground, but customarily includes the output from auxiliary processing at or near the mines.

The Bureau of Mines recorded peak particle-velocity levels and vibration frequencies to determine the nature and intensity of ground vibrations for tunnel blast rounds at the NORAD Complex, Colorado Springs, Colo. Previous Bureau of Mines studies in quarries and underground mines had shown that scaling (dividing) the distance from the blast by the square root of the charge weight removed the effect of the various charge weights on vibration amplitudes. The analysis of variance tests performed on the NORAD vibration data, however, indicated that the cube rather than square root scaling exponent grouped the data more effectively. The empirical propagation equation, V = 560 (D/w1/3)-2.04, where V is the maximum peak particle velocity in inches per second, D is the distance from the blast in feet, and W is the zero-delay charge weight in pounds described the attenuation, with distance, of the particle velocities from the tunnel blasts in the Pikes Peak Granite of the NORAD Complex.

"INTRODUCTION A fire started about 10 a.m., November 10, 1947, at the Kings mine, Princeton Mining Co., Princeton, Ind., about 1,800 feet inby the main shaft bottom on the main west haulage road at a point estimated to be 2 miles from the faces of the main west entries. No lives were lost, as 27 men escaped from the mine after a series of explosions, which necessitated sealing the mine on the surface. This information circular shows"" how adverse conditions might be overcome, when reopening a sealed mine, by expert planning and close cooperation on the part of various organizations. Conditions found in the mine after it was reopened were comparable to the worst that had been anticipated, yet the mine was recovered with comparatively little difficulty and a minimum of risk. The open workings in the mine covered a vast area, but most of the mine resumed production of coal after being sealed for only 37 days.The information contained herein also points to the desirability of adhering as closely as possible to a predetermined schedule of operations."

Optical technologies have progressed rapidly in the past 15 years. One application of laser technology in underground coal mines currently under evaluation is the remote measurement of explosive methane gas. Federal regulations require that atmospheric monitoring systems used in gassy underground mines where permissible equipment is required shall be intrinsically safe. Mine Safety and Health Administration criteria for the evaluation and testing of intrinsically safe apparatus and associated apparatus contain no specific guidance for optoelectronic components such as diode lasers. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health is conducting a study to help provide a scientific basis for developing appropriate safety guidelines for optical equipment in under- ground coal mines. Results of experiments involving ignition of methane-air mixtures by collections of small heated particles of Pittsburgh seam coal and black iron oxide are reported. The inert but more strongly absorbing iron oxide targets consistently ignited methane-air mixtures at lower powers than the coal targets. Minimum observed igniting powers for laser energy delivered by 200, 400 and 800 pm core fiber optic cables and directed onto iron oxide targets in methane-air atmospheres were 0.6, 1.1, and 2.2 W, respectively. Comparisons with the results of other researchers are made. A thermal layer theoretical approach to describing the process is included as an appendix.

OVERALL data for 1963 on injury experience and the levels of employment, worktime, and operating activity of the mineral industries are shown in the statistical tables of this chapter. The general groupings of the industries are presented in greater detail in Volumes I and II of the Minerals Yearbook. A corresponding chapter in Volume I contains additional breakdowns of the data on metal, nonmetal, sand and gravel, slag, and stone mines and quarries together with separate information on the related processing mills and plants including primary nonferrous smelters. The more specific information on the anthracite and bituminous-coal, petroleum and natural gas, peat, and natural asphalt industries is given in the similar chapter of Volume II. Injury and employment data were collected from coal producers on the mandatory basis required by the Federal Coal Mine Safety Act (30 U.S.C., sec. 455). Producers of all other minerals (fuel and nonfuel) voluntarily reported the requested injury and employment data. The figures for 1963 are preliminary except for anthracite, coke, petroleum and natural gas, native asphalt, and slag which are final. Data for earlier years are final. The figures represent full coverage for all industries except the oil and gas industries for which coverage is not complete, particularly with respect to small companies.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed an acoustic test for determining if a rock salt sample is from a "normal" nongassy salt face or from a gassy face where an outburst has the potential to occur. The test is based on the observation that a salt sample taken near an outburst-prone zone produces an audible popping sound when it is dissolved in water. The sound is produced when pressurized gas that is trapped in salt samples is released. In the acoustic test, the sound is electronically measured, digitized, and transmitted to a microcomputer; the output is an average decibel value that classifies the sample as "normal" or "outburst." The acoustic test procedure and equipment are described, and raw test results and data analysis are shown. Results are also shown for several salt samples that were analyzed using a laser Raman microprobe.

The Location Group conversed in the Petroleum Room of the Green Center with the purpose of addressing the following list of topics in light of the Bureau of Mines' requirements for detecting and locating trapped miners by electromagnetic methods. These topics include: Noise, Sources, Antennas (transmit and receive), the Propagation Medium, Signal Processing, Optimum Frequency, Receivers, Pulse vs. CW Techniques, Passive Location Techniques, and Obstacles. Practical constraints such as equipment size, weight and power requirements, cost and intrinsic safety were kept in mind during these discussions. It was emphasized that in-mine equipment must be inexpensive, rugged, simple and lightweight. Otherwise, the mine operators probably would not buy it nor would the miners be able to effectively use it. Present techniques for experimentally detecting and locating trapped miners were discussed, along with techniques to improve their location accuracy. Analytical, numerical, and scale modelling methods were considered as a means of giving further insight into measurement, anomalies caused by terrain variations, conductivity contrasts, and obstacles. After discussion of these topics, conclusions were drawn and existing problem areas were identified. These problem areas were addressed in developing guidelines for future efforts. Following the discussion period, the Chairman gave a summary of the Location Group report and comments were solicited from the entire group. 2.0 GROUP DISCUSSION HIGHLIGHTS 2.1 Noise W. Bensema asked the group whether the noise data provided by NBS was adequate. It was determined that for location systems analysis, the most important form of noise data was the frequency spectra of vertical and horizontal magnetic fields on the surface, and the answer to his question was affirmative. Drs. Wait and Frischknecht pointed out the difficulty in accurately measuring the true vertical magnetic field since these measurements are heavily influenced by the loop setting and the local geology. The Bureau of Mines developed a mathematical model that decribes the interaction of an automated breathing and metabolic simulator, or lung, with a self-contained· self-rescuer that is supplied compressed oxygen. The model can be used to predict the gas partial volumes of 0z, Nz, and COz in the lung and in the self-rescuer breathing bag for a prescribed metabolic state that characterizes the lung. Nonlinear rate equations are used to describe the temporal evolution of the gas partial volumes. A numerical procedure was established with a FORTRAN computer program to solve these equations, which correspond to a given metabolic state. Examples are presented of applications of the model to predict bag volume and bag oxygen concentration changes with time when the bag is controlled by an automated breathing simulator. Under certain restrictive conditions, the model equations can also be used to analytically pre-dict the time required for the bag to reach a maximum or minimum volume. The model equation in this latter case was extended to transi-tions between metabolic states, with transitions described as exponential growth or decay processes.

ASARCO Incorporated, the only domestic arsenic producer, terminated copper-smelting operations and the associated recovery of byproduct arsenic trioxide at Tacoma, W A. in 1985. It still shipped small quantities of trioxide from its remaining stocks in 1987. Imports for consumption of arsenic trioxide were slightly higher than in 1986. Domestic Data Coverage.-Shipments of small amounts of arsenic trioxide from remaining stocks by Asarco were reported voluntarily to the Bureau of Mines.

While the statistical summary focuses on 1991 data, this update and outlook section draws on information available to the author as of the date of final preparation in early 1993. For all the press notoriety associated with the shift in the Near East crisis from the defensive posture of Desert Shield to the restoration of Kuwaiti sovereignty through Desert Storm, this was not the dominant event governing global economic thinking in 1991 and the first half and more of 1992. From the global perspective, the momentous political changes in the area that was the U.S.S.R. and in the smaller emerging transitional economy states of Eastern Europe will have even greater current and long-lasting effects on world mineral industry activities than the crisis in the Near East.

A novel calorimetric solution technique, recently developed at the Bureau of Mines, was tested using synthetic samples of chalcocite (CU2S) and covellite (CuS). The solution of these refractory sulfides was accomplished by oxidation with bromine in a moderately acidic, aqueous solution. The resulting values for the standard enthalpies of formation (?Hf°, 298.15) for CU2S(c) and CuS(c) were -18.1 ±1.1 kcal/mol and -13.3 ±1.1 kcal/mol, respectively. These values are in good agreement with published formation values derived from other methods of physicochemical measurement.
