As a part of it investigations pertaining to the promotion of safety, the Bureau of Mines is investigating various means, useful for the elimination or mitigation of the explosion hazards of combustible gases encountered in mining and industry. Information has been obtained and a procedure developed whereby the explocibility of many complex, gaseous, combustible atmospheres may be calculated in a simple manner without the necessity of performing laborious laboratory experiments. In a previous publication4/ data were given and a method described whereby the limits of inflammability of gaseous mixtures, including methane, hydrogen, carbon monoxide, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and oxygen, could be determined by calculation. The information published in that report enables one to calculate the limits of inflammability of such gases as are liberated by mine fires, gases from explosives, automobile exhaust ran, uses present after mine explosions, blast-furnace gas, and other gases containing part of or all of the above-listed constituents.

In view of the necessity or increasing production of metallurgical fluorspar to satisfy wartime demands, 0, M. Bishop, former district engineer of the Bureau of Mines, L. W. Carrier and. J. S. Williams, senior geologist of the Federal Geological Survey, and E. H. Dawson, mining engineer of the War Production Board made a joint survey of the Illinois-Kentucky fluorite district in July 1942 to determine what steps should be taken to increase production. As part of their recommendations, a program for exploring the idle Klondike mine in Livingston County, Ky., was outlined. All the ore produced at the Klondike mine was mined above the 325-foot level, where some tonnage remains. Factors that influenced selection of the Klondike mine for exploration were favorable geological conditions, the state of mine development and the availability of pumping equipment and some usable mine and mill equipment. In December 1942, the Metals Reserve Co. leased the Klondike mine from the Salem Fluorspar Co.

In its program of investigation of deposits of strategic minerals, the Bureau of Mines did some development drilling from October 1247 to March 1948 at the Pickering Creek deposits, Charter County, Pa., in an endeavor to find an additional source of supply of lead and zinc. Lead mining in Pickering Creek Valley showed great activity from 1851 to 1855; but after this period mining gradually declined until 1870 when all mines were. One small mine did some work from 1917 to 1920. The ores were sulfides of lead and zinc, which were partly oxidized from the surface to the 20-foot level. As zinc was penalized at the reduction works, the ore was sorted at the mine and the zinc discarded. The Wheatley and Chester County veins contained the beet ore bodies in the district. These converging veins are 2 to 5 feet wide. To cut the veins below the old mine working' the Bureau of Mines diamond-drilled eight holes aggregating 2,820 feet. No significant lead-zinc mineralization was found.

Since bauxite mining began in the Irwinton District, Wilkinson County, Ga., in 1912, it has been on a small scale, as most of the deposits of high-grade ore are small. The bauxite has a high silica content, and its use has been largely limited to the chemical industry. Drilling under this project did not disclose any bauxite deposits of commercial value: However, numerous holes penetrated high-alumina clay deposits, but no attempt was made to delimit them, as the project was solely an exploration for bauxite. Bauxite was first discovered near Irwinton in 1907. The district covers virtually all of Wilkinson County and extends into the adjoining counties of Washington, Baldwin, and Twiggs. Mining was begun in 1912 by the Republic Mining & Manufacturing Co. on the Honeycutt, Parker, and Daniel properties, which are 1.5 miles from Wriley on the old Irwinton to Milledgeville Road.

The Bureau of Mines has studied a number of processes to remove Cu from molten steel scrap with the objective of determining if any of the laboratory methods studied warranted in depth research investigations. Experimental approaches included oxidizing Cu from steel containing other metals that form stable mixed oxides with Cu (AI, Cr, Fe, Mn, Mo, and V), injecting the same metals as oxides to simplify the mechanism of complex oxide formation, partitioning Cu into alkali or alkaline earth silicate slags or oxide-moderated sulfides, and coremoving Cu and S by injecting active compounds of Ca and Mg. The most promising tests, producing nearly 0.3 pct Cu in the slag, used Ar injection of K20-moderated Na2S-FeS below the surface of molten steel containing about 0.6 pct Cu and protected by a CaO-SiOz slag; however, in depth research investigations currently are not felt to be warranted.

The Bureau of Mines has developed a computerized oil and gas well data retrieval system from studies of the waterflood potential of a producing reservoir. This system stores pertinent information about each well completed in a reservoir and facilitates selection and manipulation of large volumes of data. Use of the system enables reservoir information to be supplied rapidly, accurately, and at less expense.

As a part of the strategic minerals program of the Bureau of Mines, nine chromite-ore samples were obtained during the period 1949-56 from mines in the vicinity of Red Mountain, near Seldovia, Kenai Peninsula, Alaska. This report summarizes the results of beneficiation studies of the samples at the Bureau's Juneau, Alaska, and Albany, Oreg., laboratories. In general, the ores were found amenable to concentration by gravity methods for producing concentrates that assayed over 48 percent chromic oxide. Intimate association of chromite and gangue minerals, however, necessitated fine grinding and limited the amount of chromite recoverable. Recovery of chromium in concentrate that assayed 48 percent chromic oxide or higher ranged from approximately 20 percent for low-grade ores (10 to 12 percent Cr203) to more than 95 percent for 1 high-grade sample (42 percent Cr203). The iron content of the chrome-bearing mineral -hence, the chrome/iron ratio of finished concentrate -appears to vary with the grade of the ore. Concentrates made from high-grade ores had chrome/iron ratios as high as 3.1:1; the concentrates from low-grade ores, however, had chrome/iron ratios as low as 1.8:1.

A triaxial procedure is described for measuring the modulus of elasticity and Possion's ratio of stress relief cores , that is , the concentric hole cores obtained by the overcoring technique . The elastic constant determinations can be made at stress levels comparable with those encountered in underground mining . The results from tests on an aluminum alloy calibration specimen and four rock specimens are included .

From 1986 to 1989, at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied the 59,600-acre Mexican Mountain Wilderness Study Area (UT-060-054) in order to evaluate its identified mineral resources. The study area is located in Emery County, UT, about 24 miles east of Castle Dale, UT. A review of the geologic and mining literature, and a field examination identified two uranium prospects in the Wilderness Study Area, and three copper prospects nearby. One-hundred ninety-five rock samples were taken.

Twelve millisecond delayed blasts in four limestone quarries in Iowa were instrumented with arrays of vertical velocity gages to determine if the direction of propagation through the rock or the method of initiation of the blast had any effect upon the level of vibration. Two gage arrays approximately 90° apart were used to test the effect of direction of propagation. The vibrations from blasts initiated by three methods were recorded. Vibration records from these tests were analyzed for peak particle velocity as a function of distance from the blast. The data are shown to fit a power Law equation. Direction of propagation is shown to affect the value of the exponent n. The effect of charge size per delay interval on the level of vibration is removed from the data by scaling the travel distance by the square root of the charge weight per delay period. The method of initiating the blasts is shown to have a strong effect upon the level of vibration and the spread in the data from one shot to another.

A vertical air shaft in the Birmingham, Ala., iron district was sunk with a circular cross section and lined with concrete at a relatively low cost to provide needed ventilation for an iron-ore mine. The method of sinking the shaft is described, and the costs are stated in mar-hours with a descriptive list of equipment and a statement on the size and use of temporary buildings. Preparation began May 2, 1955, and the shaft was completed at a depth of [680] feet by September 22, 1956. By October 1956, all temporary building and [aft]-sinking equipment had been removed. The total direct-labor cost for the operation, including preparation and dismantling, was 50,700 man-hours, or 30.2 man-hours per foot. Total rock and dirt removed amounted to 17,523 cubic yards (in place), and the shaft lining required 4,635 cubic yards of concrete to form a circular air shaft with an inside diameter of 16 feet.

This paper presents one of a series of digests of foreign mining legislation and court decisions which is being prepared in advance of a general report relative to the right of American citizens to explore for minerals and to own and operate mines in various foreign countries. This interpretation of the laws of Bolivia has been prepared from the best available information in Washington, but is released subject to correction and amplification, if necessary, by the proper American diplomatic and consular officers to whom it is being referred through the courtesy of the Department of State. SYNOPSIS OF LAW All useful substances of the mineral Kingdom belong originally to the State. The soil and subsoil are regarded as two distinct parts, the latter extending indefinitely in depth (Art. 2). The subsoil is under the dominion of the State, which may either abandon it to common use, grant it gratuitously to the owner of the soil, or alienate it, in return for an annual fee, to any individual or association that applies for it. Following World War II, the rapid increase in both military and civilian activity in the area served by the Alaska Railroad stimulated interest in the availability of local sources of nonmetallic minerals that might be used for building materials. Except for abundant sand and gravel and some pumice, the construction industry of the area depended entirely on high-cost imports for building materials of mineral origin. Because continued rapid growth was anticipated, development and use of local sources of such materials was advocated by both military and civil authorities to reduce the high costs of con¬struction and bolster the unstable economy of the area. The U.S. Department of the Interior began a program On included examining the numerous deposits of nonmetallic minerals accessible to the Alaska Railroad to determine their possible use as raw materials for the construction industry. Preliminary field investigations were made by the Geological Survey. The more promising deposits were subsequently examined and sampled by Bureau of Mines engineers, and the samples were subjected to the laboratory tests necessary to indicate the chemical and physical characteristics of the raw materials or their products. Such field and laboratory investigations were conducted on clay, shale, argillite, limestone, gypsum, and pumice taken from various parts of the area. In initial phasees of the work, done irate 1948 through 1952, many of the deposits examined were suitable for proctoring building materials. Results of the work completed during that period have been published in a Bureau of Mines report3 giving general information and detailed data on more than 35 deposits that were investigated.

Proximity warning devices can improve workplace safety by alerting workers when they are in a hazardous area near moving equipment. Industrial work sites often present extreme challenges to safety-based proximity warning devices. Many commercially available types of proximity warning sensors and systems can be rendered useless when covered with mud, ice, snow, ore, rock, and other material. The list includes radar, ultrasonic, capacitive, and visual types of sensors and systems. Addressing these shortcomings, NIOSH personnel have developed a patented active proximity warning system called HASARD (Hazardous Area Signaling and Ranging Device) which employs lowfrequency, low-power magnetic fields which are quite impervious to severe environmental conditions. A shapeable wire loop antenna which provides the marker of dangerous work areas, has been mounted on a continuous mining machine and was mounted inside 1.3-cm thick angle iron. This loop antenna was exposed to more than six months of active underground coal production, which included being covered by and scraped over with tons of rock, sprayed by a continuous stream of water, and immersed in thick mud. After six months the loop antenna showed signs of wear, but was still capable of performing its intended function. The HASARD system is now being applied to other industrial applications and is showing much promise, especially in harsh environments. This paper details the system, describes the tests that have been done, and mentions other areas where it can benefit the safety of industrial workers.

Previous Work . The Bureau of Mines reported a survey of bond clays for graphite crucibles at the American Mining Congress which met at St. Louis in November , 1919 *** . The report contained information in regard to : (a) tests carried on to determine the effect of substituting Canadian and Alabama graphites for Ceylon graphite in varying proportions . The data indicated that Alabama graphite is superior to Canadian graphite and further , that Alabama can be substituted for Ceylon graphite to a large measure without lowering the quality of the ware . These tests were made on No. 70 size brass melting crucibles and were carried out under foundry practice . (b ) Tests were reported in which an attempt was made to modify the nature of Alabama graphite by heat treatment so as to resemble Ceylon graphite . Little advantage from the treatment was reported . With this general information as a basis , the experimental work proceeded along two lines : A study of bond clays for steel -melting crucibles and for brass -melting crucibles . Twenty- one sets of standard-size crucibles were made up of a body containing Ceylon graphite as standard , bonded with 21 bond clays . These tests were carried out under foundry practice as were the former tests . Three domestic clays proved to be superior to the standard Klingenberg clay formerly used in brass -melting practice while in the steel - melting industry , 13 domestic clays gave service superior to Klingenberg clay .

Flammability studies conducted to date on stratified methane - air and pentane - air mixtures in air indicate that location and extent of a flammable layer are affected by molecular diffusion , gas motion , and propagation of flame . In initially quiescent mixtures , the lower limit - of - flammability zone may be determined by assuming molecular diffusion alone governs mixing rate . The upper limit - of - flammability zone can be predicted in this manner only for stratified layers with small concentration gradients ( less than 0.2 volumepercent per inch ) ; where large concentration gradients are encountered ( for example , as much as 30 volume - percent per inch ) , the initial - mixture methane concentrations that yield flammable mixtures are larger than anticipated . Flames propagating through heterogeneous quiescent methane - air atmospheres in the direction of the concentration gradient exhibit flame speeds at any point that corresponds to the flame speed of the homogeneous gas mixture having the same gas composition as that of the point in the heterogeneous system . In flowing mixtures with large concentration gradients , the degree of mixing prior to ignition does not appear to affect the flame velocity and emitted radiation appreciably in a 6.5 - ft - diameter gallery .

"Studies of the flow fields and particle impaction characteristics are more complicated in multi-nozzle impactors than in single-nozzle impactors, since the jets of air must penetrate cross-flowing air to impinge on the impaction plate. Results of heat and mass transfer analysis are employed to describe the cross-flow pattern in multi-nozzle impactors. A cross-flow parameter has been derived to predict the deflection of the air jet by the cross-flow. This parameter is expressed as a function of the geometric parameters for the multi-nozzle impactor. DnN 4D,, where N is the number of nozzles, Dn the nozzle diameter and D, the nozzle cluster diameter. Empirical particle collection data show that multi-nozzle impactors operate satisfactorily, if the cross-flow parameter is less than a critical value of 1.2. Impactors operating with a cross-flow parameter larger than this critical value are shown to possess poor particle collection characteristics.Inertial impactors of many designs have been used for sampling aerosol particles. Impactors can be single stage, consisting of a nozzle and an impaction plate, or a cascade impactor with several stages in series. The simplest design for a stage is a single nozzle with a flat impaction plate. However, many designs use stages with multiple nozzles of identical size, which allows for compact impactors to be designed at rather substantial flow rates and moderate pressure drops.Nearly all of the theoretical work, and much of the experimental work, has been performed on single-nozzle impactors. The results of single-nozzle impactor analysis are often applied to multiple-nozzle impactors, which are assumed to be a group of individual nozzles, each operating as though they were single nozzles. However, an important fact is often ignored: the interaction of flow from adjacent nozzles can change not only the fluid mechanics in the impaction region, but also the locations of the jet stagnation points, and the impaction characteristics of each nozzle.The effect of multiple nozzles on the particle collection characteristics of impactors has been studied by a few investigators. May (1964), Fletch et al. (1967), Friedrichs (1968), and Vaughan (1986) reported that the quantity of particles in deposits of nozzles in the first two stages of the Andersen multi-nozzle cascade impactor were not equal. The inner deposits appeared to contain fewer particles than the outer ones. However, Vaughan (1986) in addition showed that many of the deposits in the outer three rows were missing on the first stage, even though the outer deposits that were present were larger than the inner deposits.May (1964) conducted experiments and explained the phenomenon of smaller deposits near the center than near the edge. He noted that in Andersen cascade impactors the air issuing from the nozzles moves radially outward along the narrow channel between the nozzle plate and the impaction plate. This flow at 28.31min -1 created a pressure difference of about 1 mm water between the inner and outer sections of the channel. The effect was most pronounced in the first two stages, where the pressure drop across the nozzles was also about 1 mm water. Here, the flow velocities in the nozzles, and hence the deposits, were smallest at the center and increased toward the periphery of the impaction plate. since the pressure drop across the nozzles was the smallest at the center and a maximum at the periphery. This effect was negligible in the lower stages because of a larger pressure drop across the nozzles. According to May (1964), this effect could be eliminated by increasing the nozzle-to-impaction-plate distance to three nozzle diameters and improving the nozzle arrangement to allow air flow to escape to the periphery more easily."

"The acOustic impedances of seven rat lungs were measured at frequencies between 100 and 6400 Hz. Rats were divided into two groups: a silica exposed group (N=3) and a control group (N=4). The silica exposed group was injected intratracheally with silica solution. Three of the control group were intratracheallyinjected with saline. Between four and six weeks after theinjections, all lungs were excised and degassed. Lungs were,suspended in a pressure Chamber, with the trachea canula attached to the end Of a tapered impedance tube. The lungs were subjected to transpulmonary pressures between -30 cm H2O and 6 cm H2O to simulate deflation and inflation. With transpulmonary pressure being held constant, the impedance tube was excited with random noise. A dual channel analyzer calculated H12(f), the transfer function between the two microphones. This function was used to calculate the lung's impedance at that pressure. The impedance magnitude spectra of both groups typically had peaks at 2000,3500, and 5500 Hz. Statistically significant differences. (90%confidence level or greater) between the two groups occur at the 3500 Hz peak at transpulmonary pressures of 20, 8, 6, 4, and 2 cm of H2O. This fact seems to confirm that this method can detect. lung disease. Further research will indicate whether this method will be able to detect the onset Of coal worker's pneumoconiosis.INTRODUCTIONOne of the first studies of impedance Of the human lung were conducted by DuBois et al.[2] using the forced OscillatiOn technique. This technique, however, was limited to frequencies below 30 Hz. Further studies by Van Den Berg [6] revealed thatthe lung reflected higher frequency sounds (100-10,000 Hz), instead Of behaving as an anechoic termination. This discovery has lead to several studies of the acoustical properties of both human and animal lungs at high frequencies [3,4,5]."

"During the past several years, alunite from the Marysvale (Utah) region has been the subject of investigation by the Electrometallurgical Section of the Bureau of Mines. The nature and occurrence of this mineral, with considerable data on the Utah deposits, together with a number of results of preliminary experiments, have been given in a previous report. 6/ The geology of the Marysvale region has been reviewed recently. 7/The present paper reports the results obtained by a method involving the sintering of alunite with boric acid and subsequent treatment of the sinter to produce alumina and potassium sulphate.The preliminary work just mentioned had given indications of the separation of sulphate salts high in potassium from fusions of alunite with borax glass.During the course of further work along those lines, fusions of boric acid and alunite were tried. No separation of salts was obtained, but it was observed that rather complete removal of so3 from the alunite occurred and that the sinter could be leached with water to give a solution contain¬ing most of the potash and a residue containing most of the alumina. The objective of this Bureau of Mines investigation was to determine the effects of adding manganese compounds and ores to iron ore pellets. Manganese dioxide, carbonate, sulfate and chloride, plus six manganiferous ores from the Minnesota Cuyuna Range were tested as additives to increase the manganese content of iron ore pellets. One to 5 percent manganese, as a compound or ore, was added to five magnetite concentrates and one hematite concentrate. These concentrates were ballad, indurated (1,300° C), and tested for reducibility. Manganese sulfate and chloride were unsatisfactory additives causing cracking and degradation of the pellets during reduction. Manganese dioxide, carbonate, and the ores were satisfactory additives. The additives increased pellet compression strengths with a corresponding loss of reducibility, as compared to the pellets without manganese additions. The changes in compression strengths and reducibility were caused by the formation of Jacobite spinel and slag within the pellets. However, when the induration temperature was lowered from 1,300° to 1,200° C the reducibility and compression strengths were comparable to the pellets without manganese additions indurated at 1,300° C.
