The Black Mesa coal field is part of the Hopi and Navajo Indian Reservation in Apache, Navajo, and Coconino Counties, Ariz. The field is in an isolated area with the nearest railroad 70 to 90 miles to the south. Travel is restricted by roads that become impassable during inclement weather. The area is a mesa and rises from 500 to 2,000 feet above the surrounding territory. Water is very scarce, and the nearest stream of any consequence is the Colorado River about 90 miles northwest from the center of the field. Coal beds are found in the Mesaverde formation of the Cretaceous age, but they are uncorrelated and range from subbituminous to bituminous in rank. Huddle2/ estimates the reserves of subbituminous coal in Arizona at about 15 billion tons, most of which is in the Black Mesa field. The geology of the field has been reported by Campbell and Gregory.3/ Coal production is small, and the output is used almost exclusively for domestic fuel in the Indian schools, missions, and trading posts.

New data on zirconium tetraiodide (ZrI4) have resulted from high-temperature enthalpy and X-ray powder diffraction studies conducted by the Bureau of Mines. These studies were undertaken as part of the Bureau's efforts to provide important thermodynamic data essential to the advancement of mineral resources technologies that can be employed with minimal energy requirements and minimal environmental degradation. Enthalpies were measured with a copper-block drop calorimeter. No transitions or other anomalies were found. Tabulated values are given from 298.15 to 772 K for relative enthalpy, heat capacity, entropy, and Gibbs energy function. Enthalpies are expressed in equation form and combined with data from the literature to calculate values of the standard enthalpy of formation and the Gibbs energy of formation. X-ray powder diffraction data indicate that ZrI4 is primitive cubic with a lattice parameter of 11.79 A and is isostructural with stannic iodide (SnI4).

The basic objective of this project was to determine the cost-effectiveness of dust control used on unpaved mine haul roads. Field testing was conducted at three surface coal mines (two in Wyoming, one in southern Illinois) for a total of 20 weeks. The highest control efficiency measured for a chemical dust suppressant, 82 percent, was for calcium chloride two weeks after application. Generally, however, the control efficiencies hovered in the 40 to 60 per-cent range over the first two weeks since application, and then decreased with time. After the fifth week, the limited number of data points suggest a control efficiency of less than 20 percent. Composite watering data were fairly uniform. Watering once per hour resulted in a TSP control efficiency of approximately 40 percent. Doubling that application rate increased the control effectiveness by about 15 percent to 55 percent. Chemical dust suppressants (primarily salts and lignons) can be shown to be more cost-effective than watering under some conditions. The Conrad Hill mine vas first opened as a gold mine about 182 and has been operated at various times since then. The Bureau of Mines, as part of the strategic minerals program, mapped and sampled the accessible mine workings. The work failed to reveal appreciable copper values or evidence of additional ore deposits.

The problem of obtaining enough manganese for use in the manufacture of steel appears likely to recur when international relationships are disturbed and to become serious at any time when the United States is cut off from its customary supply. Some idea of the problems that an e under war conditions may be obtained from a description given by Ellicott3/ in 1918 before the American Iron and Steel Institute. This condition arises because in normal times there is an economic advantage in importing available high-grade foreign ores to the neglect of our own less satisfactory resources. That considerable low-grade manganese ore and a much smaller amount of high-grade material are available in this country is well known from geological surveys 4/ and has been confirmed by Bureau of Mines investigations. Locations of the various deposits are indicated in figure 1. The possibility of greatly expanding domestic production was actually demonstrated from 1913 to 1918, when the annual production of manganese from domestic ores rose from about 4 percent to approximately 35 percent 6/7/ of the total consumption of ferromanganese and spiegeleisen. In idea of how domestic production compares with total consumption in the United States can be obtained 1 from figure 2, taken from the Minerals Yearbook8/ for 1970. Assuming that it is possible to increase production of manganese ores sufficiently to supply all our needs, such a program presumably would require 2 or 3 years, and the cost of production would certainly rice considerably, for some time at least. The purpose of this investigation was to develop a dependable and economic method for recovering spodumene and mica from pegmatites of the type found in Gaston County, N. C. Laboratory batch tests and continuous flotation tests were made by the Federal Bureau of Mines to determine the feasibility of treating the ore by flotation to recover high-grade spodumene and mica concentrates. The spodumene flotation circuit yielded concentrates containing 6.50 percent lithia (Li20), with an overall recovery of 81.8 percent of the lithia in the ore, The mica circuit yielded concentrates containing 97.5 percent mica, with a recovery of 82.5 percent of the mica in the spodumene tailing.

Laboratory equipment, which simulates abrasive impacts between steel and minerals that might be present during pneumatic transport of coal, was used by the Bureau of Mines to characterize the potential explosion hazard of such collisions in an atmosphere of fine coal dust, air, and methane. A variety of coal mine rock materials, including sandstone, limestone, and pyrite-bearing limestone, were impacted with specimens of pipeline steel. Tests were con-ducted in atmospheres containing zero to 6.4 vol-pct methane mixed with zero to 300 mg/l coal dust. Coal dust in air alone was not ignited by abrasive impacts, but additions of as little as 1 vol-pct methane to the coal dust and air mixture resulted in ignitions. Steel impacting against sandstone caused ignitions in mixtures of coal dust, air, and methane, and the probability for ignitions increased with an increase in methane. No ignitions occurred with impacts of steel on lime-stone or pyrite-bearing limestone, even when large showers of sparks were produced. Studies of the effect of tangential collision velocity showed that no ignitions of coal dust, air, and methane occurred below 900 fpm (4.57 m/sec). Ignitions in coal-air-methane mixtures were found to be caused by a hot friction-induced smear on the impacted rock at the impact site rather than by sparks. High-speed photography was used to verify this observation.

Installation of a horizontal air-blocking shelf around the inside perimeter of the surface mining drill deck shroud is proposed to improve dust capture. Without the use of this shelf, a strong Coand? effect airflow pattern results in dust leakage to the environment, especially at the shroud-to-ground interface. Bailing air exits the drill hole and travels along the drill steel to the underside of the table, where it fans out across the bottom of the drill table and continues down the sides of the shroud. This dust-laden bailing air then strikes the ground and fans out under gaps between the shroud and the ground. The proposed shelf prevents dust-laden air from striking the ground by redirecting it toward the center of the enclosure, where it can be captured. Laboratory tests demonstrated that the shelf reduced dust levels outside of the shroud by 81% under operating conditions consisting of a 1.9:1 collector-to-bailing-airflow ratio and a 51-mm (2-in.) gap between the shroud and ground. The shelf was 152-mm (6-in.) wide and was located at a height equal to 2/3 the distance measured from the bottom of the shroud to the bottom of the drill table. The air-blocking shelf was also capable of overcoming the adverse impact of vertical leakage along the shroud seams as long as this leakage was confined to an area below the horizontal plane defined by the shelf location.

This report on the properties of aviation gasolines and aviation jet fuels produced in the United States during 1956 was made under a cooperative agreement between the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. Analytical data are presented for 120 samples of aviation gasoline and for 38 samples of aviation jet fuel. The analyses were made on samples typical of the manufacturers' 1956 production in their laboratories and the results submitted to the Bureau of Mines for compilation. The products of 20 manufacturers of aviation gasolines and of 17 producers of aviation jet fuels are represented.

"In order to stimulate general interest in mine safety among their employees the mining companies of Butte, Mont., instituted in 1918 a Miners' Field Day, and this field day has since been held annually about the end of July, the last one being on July 25, 1921. Data on the cost and quantity available were developed for rutile (TiO2), which is potentially recoverable as a byproduct at sand-washing plants in the Southeastern States of Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina. Baaed on 1969 production data, an estimated 4,300 tons of rutile could be recovered annually from plants that process more than 25,000 tons of sand per year. Rutile prices at which this resource would be available ranged upward from $262 per ton, compared with the current market value of $185 per ton.

This Bureau of Mines report describes the preparation characteristics of the significant coalbeds of Clay, Gilmer, and Lewis Counties, W. Va. In 1966, almost 1.3 million tons of coal was mined in these counties, of which more than one-half was from the Pittsburgh coalbed. Washability analyses were made of 16 coalbed samples. Of these, only 11 samples could be upgraded to metallurgical quality. For steam or power generation five of the coals were of low sulfur content as received. The remaining samples were generally of medium sulfur content even after upgrading.

This paper describing the mining practice at the Harmony mine, Baker, daho, is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various mining districts in the United States. About 150 tons of copper ore containing 4 per cent copper, 0.001 ounce gold, and 0.1 ounce silver, is being produced daily from the Harmony mine by the shrinkage method of mining. The ore is taken by an aerial tramway 1/3 mile long to the mill, where it is concentrated. The concentrate is shipped 8 miles by truck to the railroad and thence by rail to Utah for smelting.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the White Mountain mercury deposit, in the Kuskokwim River Basin, to better determine the extent of mercury mineralization and to encourage its development by private industry. A program of diamond drilling, augering, bulldozer trenching, and sampling was carried on during four field seasons, from 1960 to 1963, inclusive. Significant amounts of cinnabar, with only trace amounts of arsenic and antimony, occur in dolomite over an area about 4,000 feet long and 1,500 feet wide. The deposit differs from other mercury deposits in the Kuskokwim River Basin by the absence of silica-carbonate and rhyolite intrusives. Small-scale mining was started in 1963 as the result of Bureau investigation and continued during the summers of 1964 and 1965. The investigations indicate that open pit mining might be the most feasible method of working this deposit.

This report presents experimental work conducted on a number of coals found within the boundaries of the Missouri River Basin, which were, to an extent, a selection of coals typical of that region. In the min, the laboratory work falls into three general classifications: (1) Laboratory distillation assay of coal to establish yields on carbonization; (2) chemical analyses of the coal samples before drying or carbonization; and (3) chemical analyses of the products of carbonization. It will be seen in the following discussion that these data derived from the small-scale laboratory apparatus are useful in predicting yields from pilot plants or industrial units. Coal is produced in about 48 general areas or mining fields in the Western States, of which approximately 18 fall within the limits of the Missouri Basin.3/ Beginning with the Northern Colorado field, through the Central and Western Wyoming fields, the coal is principally bituminous and subbituminous rank. The western Montana coals are also of these ranks. Progressing northeast from central Wyoming the coal decreases in rank, as shown by the subbituminous C coals of the Gillette field in northern Wyoming and the lignites of eastern Montana and North Dakota.

The Mining Division of the Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Obstacle and Demolition Branch, Engineer Research and Development Laboratories, Department of the Army, undertook some extensive tests to determine the effectiveness and limitations of using standard demolition-type shaped charges in underground Mining. The tests proved the shaped charge has no practical application in the functions of mining covered by this report. At an approximate cost of 0 per foot hole plus spall produced by the most efficient single shots with the M3 shaped charge, the cost is over 20 times that of producing a better hole with a rock drill. The concussion would prohibit its use in many mines, and the excess carbon monoxide gas liberated by the pontolite explosive would be an additional hazard when used underground.

From time to time the Bureau of Mines has interpreted and applied certain provisions of the Federal Coal Mine Safety Act and Federal Mine Safety Codes, primarily for the guidance of Federal Coal Mine Inspectors. Although interpretations of the Act have appeared in the Federal Register, the Code interpretations and practical applications have not been published. In response to many requests from representatives of the coal-mining industry, the Bureau is publishing this information to promote better understanding of those provisions that may be misinterpreted or misapplied. INTERPRETATIONS AND APPLICATIONS Two Federal Mine Safety Codes are discussed in this report, namely the Federal Mine Safety Code for Bituminous-Coal and Lignite Mines of the United States, Part 1, and the Federal Mine Safety Code, Anthracite Mines of the United States, Part 1. In this circular the word Codes refers to both directives; Code* refers to the code for bituminous-coal and lignite mines; Code? refers to the one for anthracite mines. Act* refers only to bituminous-coal and lignite mines.

"INTRODUCTION The Cahaba coal field is the second largest coal—producing area in Alabama. This field underlies parts of Shelby, Jefferson, St. Clair, and Bibb Counties and has an area of about 270 square miles. The Cahaba formations contain a number of coal beds, about 8 of which are mined at present. Although the area contains many folds and faults, samples from various mines and beds indicate that, except for the variation in ash content, the coal from this field is very uniform in character and quality. It is a high-volatile bituminous coal used chiefly for steam-raising purposes and domestic fuel. The coal as mined usually contains too high a percentage of impurities to be marketed without some preparation. The majority of the mines have washing plants in which jigs are the favorite type of equipment, although at some mines tables are used for cleaning the slack sizes. The washing characteristics of the coal from the Cahaba field are very uniform and differ from those of the near-by Warrior field, in that the coarser sizes contain a much lower percentage of bony material than the finer sizes. In general, the bone increases with decrease in size. It breaks into thin flakes, making difficult its elimination in the cleaning process, and gives rise to what is known among the washery operators of the Cahaba field as the ""rash problem.""A previous publication 5 referred to rash from the standpoint of jig operation and suggested some means of handling it with jigs. This report presents the results of table tests on two samples of fine coal from the Thompson and Woodstock beds, respectively, of the Cahaba field to determine the influence of rash on table efficiency.This investigation has been made in connection with the study of coal-washing problems now being conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines and the University of Alabama, with the cooperation of the different coal operators of Alabama."

This paper describing the mining practices at the Teck-Hughes mines at Kirkland Lake, Ontario, is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in various mining districts. HISTORY Prospecting was begun in the neighborhood of Kirkland Lake in 1906, but staking did not take place until 1911. Gold-bearing veins were discovered by surface trenching in 1913 on the mining claims which now make up the Teck-Hughes Gold Mines (Ltd.). A small mill was erected in 1916 after the completion of some underground exploration. A transmission' line was built in 1917 to the camp to provide adequate power for a vigorous underground campaign. Also in 1917 the present management took control operations since 1916 have been continuous,' with a steady increase in production to date.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has compiled data on the major causes of fatal and nonfatal electrical accidents related to mining, and their associated costs, for the 1980-85 period. Specific electrical problem areas were identified, allowing future research to be focused on reducing the frequency of these occurrences. Recommendations for reducing the number of electrical accidents and injuries are provided. The four mining sectors for which data were gathered and compiled are (1) underground coal mines, (2) surface at underground coal mines, (3) underground metal-nonmetal mines, and (4) surface at underground metal-nonmetal mines. Nine categories of information pertaining to specific aspects of the accident are used in this report: activity engaged in when the accident occurred, source of injury, job title, mining method, location, machine, nature of injury, accident type, and part of body affected. The number of years of experience at the specific job the employee was performing when the accident occurred, time of accident, and in the case of nonfatal accidents, the total days lost per year, are also summarized.
