Steps taken to increase drilling efficiency and decrease costs are described, including modifications of bit design, new procedures for drill-rod fabrication and new processes for completing certain drill-machine repairs.

Shallow underground voids resulting from early coal mining and other resource recovery activities over the past several decades are now being recognized as a significant cause of ground subsidence problems in developing urban areas. Uncertain knowledge of abandoned coal mines also imposes potential hazards in coal excavation operations since water inundation or the release of methane gas is a pricnipal hazard when mine excavation operations break into an abandoned mine. U.S. Army requirements for an effective method for detecting and mapping subversive man-made tunnels have resulted in a surface-operated automatic earth resistivity survey system with a digital computer data processing system. Field tests aimed at demonstrating the system performance resulted in successful detection of tunnels having depth-to-diameter ratios up to 15 to 1. Under the sponsorship of the Bureau of Mines, a similar system was designed and constructed for use in the detection of coal mine workings. This report discusses the hardware and software aspects of the system and the application of the high-resolution earth resistivity method to the survey and mapping of abandoned coal mine workings. In the field tests reported, the targets of interest were both air-filled and water-filled workings.

A two-constant equation is presented for helium from 30° = T = 1,473° K. This equation is developed by modifying a generalized equation of state originally presented by Redlich and Kwong (20).3 The modification consists of setting B = 0.06372 Tc/PeT. This modified equation represents the compressibility factors of each of 80 isotherms tested in this temperature range to less than 1 percent average deviation.

Domestic bismuth supply was projected from production figures for the ores in which it occurs--copper, lead, zinc, and tungsten. Published and unpublished data concerning host ores were examined to determine bismuth reserves and resources, and mine production. Potential recoverable bismuth occurring with reserves and resources of copper, lead, and zinc was estimated to be 36.3 million pounds. A bismuth availability diagram was developed from quantity estimates and ratios of production cost to value for these host ores. Additional recoverable bismuth occurring with domestic tungsten reserves was estimated to be 1.5 million pounds. Domestic byproduct production of bismuth will approximate 1.3 million pounds annually by 1980. This quantity will provide about 37 percent of the 3.5-million-pound estimated requirement for that year. Known world supply of bismuth appears to be sufficient for world demand to the end of this century. The study indicates that bismuth reserves and potential resources in the rest of the world have not been adequately reported.

This report is one of a series describing investigations by the Federal Bureau of Mines of the performance of various types of coal - cleaning equipment ; other reports in the series are listed in the bibliography . The information in these reports is useful to the coal industry and the manufacturers of coal - cleaning equipment in several ways : First , it assists the coalpreparation engineer who is planning a new plant to select the type of process best suited to the requirements by enabling him to forecast the yield and quality of clean coal obtainable with each type of equipment . Second , the information serves as a yardstick by which the performance of a plant can be judged and thus helps determine whether it is operating at satisfactory efficiency . Both these functions promote better coal - preparation practice ; that is , they help provide coal of more suitable quality for the market and likewise minimize the waste of good coal . This serves the interest of conservation with which the Bureau is vitally concerned . The present report deals with three plants using the Tromp dense - medium process , named after its inventor , K. F. Tromp , who developed the process in the Netherlands in 1936.5/ Selection of this particular dense -medium process for investigation was entirely a matter of convenience , and reports dealing with other dense -medium systems are planned for the future . Two baths are employed in one of the plants investigated . The first of these , handling 6- to 3 - inch coal , exhibited an exceptionally sharp separation between coal and impurity . The U.S. Bureau of Mines (BOM) constructed the Hydraulic Transport Research Facility (HTRF) to investigate the hydraulic parameters relating to the transport of coarse coal. To achieve these goals in a timely and efficient manner, the Bureau contracted to Boeing Services International, Inc. (BSI) the responsibility of operating the HTRF and providing technical support. This data report is a summary of the testing and data results for the period from 16 September to 1 November 1983. The testing covered herein is for coarse 2-in by a (minus 50 mm) Pittsburgh Seam coal in a 12-in (3 00 mm) pipeline, at velocities ranging from 5 to 18 ft/s (1.5 to 5.5 m/s) and at concentrations ranging from 15 to 55 pct.

As a part of the program of promoting the conservation and efficient utilization of petroleum, studies are being made by engineers of the Bureau of Mines on secondary oil-recovery projects throughout the United States. In furthering that aim, engineering data concerning the reservoirs, methods of stimulating the production of oil, and other pertinent facts are collected, studied, and subsequently published so that others may profit by the experience gained. This report presents the results of a study made by engineers of the Franklin, Pa., office of the Bureau of Mines of secondary oil-recovery operations in the Boggs field, Spencer district, Roane County, W. Va., whore natural gas is injected into the reservoir to stimulate the production of oil from a so-called stripper field. The Boggs field, like most others in the Appalachian region, is one in which the major part of the natural energy that caused oil to flow through the reservoir to the producing wells during the primary stage of oil production has been dissipated. For all practical purposes, most of the oil produced in the Appalachian region at the present time can be considered to be from stripper fields. Consequently, secondary recovery methods are being used extensively in the oil-producing areas of New York, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio, and Kentucky for recovering some of the oil that was not produced by primary production methods.

This paper on milling methods and costs at a flat river (Mo.), mill is one of a series of information circulars on milling methods and costs which is being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines, The mill under consideration treats 5,000 tons of load ore daily by table concentration and flotation. It is 25 years old, and yet it is a new mill. Research has been in continual progress at the plant since its beginning, and accordingly a day never passes without a record of change for advancement. The changes have been so orderly that no evidence of obsolete equipment remains.

A joint effort by the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) and the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) was undertaken to determine how well self-contained self-rescuers (SCSR's), deployed in accordance with Federal regulations (30 CPR 75.1714), held up in the underground environment with regard to both physical damage and aging. This report presents findings regarding laboratory-tested SCSR's in the fourth phase of testing from 1989 to 1993. The SCSR's were tested on human subjects and on a breathing and metabolic simulator (BMS). These results indicate that most of the apparatus, if they pass their inspection criteria, perform as expected except units with manufacturing defects. However, when the apparatus are carried in and out of the mine daily and stored at the working section, they may suffer abuse. Physical signs of abuse, unless extremely obvious, are frequently not detected by the miners or mine operators. In addition, some apparatus collected for this study had not been returned to the manufacturer in a recall effort for correction of a manufacturing defect. In both cases, the apparatus would have presented problems in emergency use. Recommendations include improved training in inspection procedures and better enforcement of recall notices.

The motor gasoline that is being marketed in the United States this winter is in general, more volatile than that sold a year ago. This increase in volatility is shown by a lowering of the distillation temperatures, ranging from 2°F. at the average initial boiling point to 5°F. at the average end point. During the past eight and. one half years the Bureau of Mines has made semi-annual surveys of the gasoline marketed in the United States, the survey Just completed being the seventeenth in the series. The cities in which samples have been collected, have been chosen as representative of the more important marketing territories, as it is obviously impracticable to obtain a sample of every gasoline sold in the entire country. Samples were collected in Boston for the first time since 1919. It was believed advisable to include samples from that district in order to give a better balance to the survey for the country as a whole.

Despits its high melting point (2,135° C.), resistance to attack by molten metals, and its hardness (8), spinel (MgO?Al203) synthesized by the fusion of alumina (Al 2 0.) and magnesia (MgO) is not used on a large scale as a commercial furnace lining, mainly because of the prohibitive cost. This investigation by the Federal Bureau of Mines was prompted by the possibility of producing synthetic spinel from inexpensive raw materials by methods outlined in U.S. Patent 2,029,773, "Process for Obtaining Products Containing Spinets," dated February 4, 1936. In this patent Ture B. Haglund described a process for recovering crystalline spinels from melts in the system Mg0?Al203-2CaO-SiO2, a system well suited to the use of starting materials such as dolomite CaMg(C03)2, olivine [2(Mg?Fe)0.Si02], and bauxite (Al203?2H20) which are abundant in the southeastern United States. Compositions, ranging from a low content in the eutectic mixture of 35 percent spinal and 65 percent dicalcium silicate (2 CaO?SiO2) to a high of 75 percent spinel and 25 percent dicalcium silicate, were fused in electric furnaces of the arc-resistance and internal-resistance types. So long as members of the system were in proper chemical balance, "dusting" slags could be produced over the entire range of spinel concentration.

Thermodynamic properties were determined by the Federal Bureau of Mines for lithium metasilicate (Li2Si03) and lithium disilicate (Li2Si205). Their enthalpies of formation were investigated by hydrofluoric acid solution calorimetry. The standard values are ?Hf°298 -393.8 ± 0.8 kcal/mole for Li2Si03, and ?Hf°298 -611.8 ± 1.0 kcal/mole for LiSi205. Enthalpy increments above 298 K were measured by copper-block drop calorimetry from 298 to 1,404 K for Li2Si03, and from 298 to 1,281 K for Li2Si205. Low-temperature heat capacities were determined adiabatically from 6 to 305 K for Li2Si205 only. The derived standard entropy is S°298 = 29.20 ± 0.10 cal/deg-mole. The various experimental data were combined with other data from the literature, and resulting properties of ?Hf°, ?Gf°, and log Kf were tabulated as a function of temperature.

This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations in the United States was made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. This paper is a continuation of a series made in cooperation with the Coordinating Fuel Research (CPR) Committee of the Coordinating Research Council (CRC), Inc. The first of this series of reports presented data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-36, and succeeding reports described motor gasolines sold during the summers and winters to and including the summer of 1941. No reports were made on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1941-42 and during the summer of 1942. However, starting with the winter of 1942-43, the semiannual reports were resumed.

Knott County is one of the smaller coal-producing areas in the Eastern Kentucky coal field. It contains numerous coal beds, many too thin to support mining over a wide area, Coal produced in the county is from a few rail-shipping operations and many small truck mines. Many smaller mines are working beds whose exact location in the coal-bearing strata is uncertain. Samples were collected from 11 different coal beds, of which the Fire Clay, Hindman, Upper Elkhorn No. 3, and Flag are the most import ant from a product ion standpoint. Known reserves in the Hindman bed. are very limited, and almost the entire production from this bed is gathered from two comparatively, large rail-shipping mines in addition to the four principal beds, samples were taken in the Francis, Haddix, Fire Clay Rider, Whitesburg, Amburgy, Upper horn No. 2, and Upper Elkhorn No. I .beds. Figure 1 is a typical section of the strata, showing the more important coal beds and. readily identifying their location with respect to each other. The bed names as shown are particularly important because of the local tendency to assign several names to the same bed. This report describes the design, and development work performed to reduce the volume and weight of the miners caplamp battery, as well as a headpiece with a swivel mechanism containing a halogen bulb with two filaments. Work was also conducted in the development of a maintenance free battery. The design concept is based on non-sintered Ni-Cd technology, with an energy density of 22 Wh/lb. The cap lamp system developed has been approved by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and can be manufactured for mine use.

In January 1948 , the Secretary of the Interior directed that a study be made of energy resources and requirements that would provide a basis for continuing appraisal of the adequacy of the Department's programs in the energy field . That this instruction was timely has been demonstrated by the increasing interest being evidenced by Congress , industry , labor , and the public in the future of the energy segment of our national economy . Several studies of individual energy sectors have appeared . Various legislative proposals have been made in Congress for obtaining more information on this subject . Substantial interest in energy projections is not , of course , a recent innovation . Energy availability and consumption are strategic factors in peacetime prosperity and growth and in our national defense as well . The past generation's literature of earnest public discussion and of legislative consideration of matters involving energy projections is very extensive . This is an exploratory study produced in the Program Staff of the Office of the Secretary of the Interior in the first half of 1949 and revised recently to take account of certain of the preliminary energy data from the 1947 Census of Manufactures and critical comments . It is offered at this time solely as a technical contribution in economic research technique . As the Bureau of Mines has recently undertaken to revise this preliminary study , critical and other comments are invited .

This report on the physical and chemical properties of typical crude oils of California is the 'eighth in a series on the producing districts of the United States. It includes discussion of results, tabulated data, and individual analyses of typical California crudes. Additional analyses of crude oils from the fields of Fresno, Kern, Los Angeles, Orange, end Ventura Counties will be published later in another Serial of the Bureau, but the summary tabulations are presented here. The samples represented in this report were collected over a rather wide interval of tine, the early samples having been obtained during the fall of 1919, and the most recent ones dating from the summer of 1923. It is thought that the samples are fairly representative, both of the older settled production and of the new flush production of the southern California fields.
