This U. S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) report presents results of stress analyses and field observations to investigate the effects of elevated trench drifts on the structural stability of rock mass zones surrounding a production draw drift in a mine utilizing a mechanized load-haul-dump (LHD) trench undercut panel caving system. A two-dimensional boundary-element mine stress model was developed to predict the locations and extent of damaged rock mass zones surrounding draw drifts where adjacent, parallel trench drifts are either elevated or not elevated above the LHD production draw drift level. A Mohr-Coulomb shear-failure criterion was obtained directly from in situ borehole shear test data. Hock-Brown shear-failure parameter values were computed from borehole-shear and triaxial test data. A procedure is described to estimate these parameters when a rock mass rating (RMR) value and triaxial data on intact samples exist, and no borehole shear test data exist Results indicate that trench drifts, elevated to the level equal to the height of the LHD production draw drift, would not minimize material damage nor significantly enhance the stability of rib and crown pillar zones surrounding production draw drifts in the mechanized LHD trench undercut caving panel investigated at this mine.

The XVIth International Conference on Coal Mine Safety Research was divided into eight half-day technical sessions. In accord with the established practice of these conferences, at each session, presentation of the papers was followed by a discussion period. Questions and comments submitted in writing to the session chairman were answered or discussed by the authors of the relevant papers or by their representatives. These discussions were tape-recorded in the original language of the speaker and subsequently translated into English when necessary. Questions to which no answer was available at the time and a few comments that exceeded the scope of the session have been omitted.

This report describes the development of guidelines for design, inspection and maintenance of automatic couplers. In order to devise the guidelines, performance requirements for automatic couplers were carefully established. This was done through a comprehensive survey of coupler manufacturers and extensive observation of automatic couplers in service in a broad spectrum of mines. The capability of the couplers to withstand the demands of the mining environment in terms of strength characteristics, gathering range, curve negotiability, and other factors were all carefully evaluated. An analysis of coupler related accidents for the years 1972-1976 was carried out to provide information on the safety and reliability of existing automatic couplers. This formed an important input to the development of the guidelines. It is expected that these guidelines will be useful to coupler manufacturers for establishing designs for improved automatic couplers, and to mine operators for maintaining their couplers in a safe and good operating condition throughout their expected lifetime. This publication contains routine analyses and related source data for 278 natural gas samples from 14 States. All of the samples were collected during calendar year 1973 as part of a continuous survey of the free world for occurrences of helium in natural gas. This survey has been conducted in the United States by the Bureau of Mines since 1917. In late 1965, the survey was expanded to include foreign gasfields. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus, which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4862 and 576.3 Fifteen previous publications have presented the results of 10,201 gas analyses prior to 1973. The first three, Bulletins 486,4 576,6 and 617,6 contain analyses and related source data on 5,218 gas samples collected from 1917 through 1960. The other 12 publications,7 which were issued as information circulars, supplement the three bulletins and contain 4,983 analyses of samples collected since 1960. This publication is the 13th publication supplementing the three bulletins.

This circular is concerned with eight nonferrous scrap metals as they generated, collected, prepared, and consumed in California. Brief reference also is included with respect to Nevada and Hawaii. Four of these scrap metals - copper, lead, aluminum, and zinc - are of major importance and make up about 95 percent of the total value, whereas the remaining four - antimony, magnesium, nickel, and tin - make up the remaining 5 percent. For convenience, the subject matter is divided into three parts, (1) Data with respect to the collection, preparation, and marketing practices that are common activities to all the nonferrous scrap metals; (2) separate discussions and statistical data with respect to each of the eight nonferrous scrap metals in California; and (3) data with respect to Nevada and Hawaii.

The purpose of this research contract was to develop and test a Saran latex modified portland cement concrete lagging to be used as a replacement for wood lagging. The scope of work performed was divided into four phases: Phase I - Engineering Criteria; Phase-! I1 - Design Study; Phase III - Fabrication of Lagging; and Phase IV - Prototype Demonstration Project. Each phase of work was completed and is described in detail in this report. The prototype latex modified concrete lagging developed in this program weighed 52 pounds. When tested in flexure, it supported center point loading of 4500 pounds and under 1/4 point loading it supported loadings of 7000 pounds. Deflections at maximum loading ranged from 1/2 to 1 inch. Maximum deflections exceed 2 inches. The lagging does not exhibit catastrophic failure. Two hundred and twenty of the LMC lagging were produced and shipped to the Bunker Hill Company in Kellogg, Idaho for installation in their mine at the 17 level. The lagging are performing satisfactory after 22 months exposure in the mine.

This investigation was undertaken to develop methods to improve the quality of titanium sponge produced by the Bureau of Mines modification of the Kroll magnesium reduction process. Research revealed that by systematic elimination of detrimental impurities introduced with the raw materials and by improved handling and processing techniques, high-quality ductile titanium with a hardness of less than 110 B.h.n. (Brinell hardness number) can be produced consistently. This improvement was accomplished by helium (or argon) stripping of residual atmospheric and other dissolved gases from the titanic chloride, preliminary dehydration of crude titanium sponge, and careful regulation of the titanium tetrachloride (TiC14) feed rate to the reactors.

As part of a cooperative effort between the Bureau of Mines and the Florida Institute of Phosphate Research (FIPR), with input from the phosphate industry, the conversion of phosphogypsum to sulfur is being investigated. The proposed process incorporates the thermal reduction of phosphogypsum to calcium sulfide (CaS) and a hydrometallurgical treatment to convert calcium sulfide to sulfur (S°). The research described herein is focused on the latter half of the process. It was demonstrated that calcium sulfide could be converted to ammonium bisulfide (NH4SH), and that ammonium bisulfide could be oxidized by air in the presence of a catalyst, to elemental sulfur, which was adsorbed on the catalyst. Two methods for recovering sulfur from the catalyst were developed: (1) thermal treatment to volatilize sulfur, and (2) leaching the sulfur from the catalyst with liquid anhydrous ammonia. Over 90 pct of the sulfur adsorbed on activated carbon (the catalyst) was recovered by both methods. Based upon the encouraging laboratory investigations, a hydrometallurgical scheme was proposed for the overall conversion of calcium sulfide to elemental sulfur.

This Bureau of Mines publication identifies areas having sufficient coal reserves to support synthetic natural gas (SNG) development and summarizes those areas having the highest potential. Capital requirements, mining and coal cost factors, water availability, and coal-quality data pertinent to SNG production are presented. Evaluation of individual coal reserve blocks was based upon coal and water requirements of the Bureau of Mines Synthane coal gasification process.

Tests of resistance to molten metals , to oxidation at elevated temperatures , and to various chemical reagents were made for a series of compositions in the TiB₂ - CrB₂ subsystem . In reaction with molten metals , there was no noticeable difference in reaction of the various compositions in the ( Ti , Cr ) B₂ series . The oxidation tests were ( 1 ) a rising - temperature test in which the specimen temperature was increased 4° per minute to 1,200 ° C and ( 2 ) a constanttemperature test in which the specimen temperature was held constant at 1,000 ° C. Compositions near Tio.6 Cro.4 B2 had the best oxidation resistance . Ti。.6 The chromium- rich alloys showed marked superiority to the titanium- rich alloys in resistance to corrosion by the chemical agents investigated . The chemical reagents used were sulfuric , nitric , and hydrochloric acids and sodium hydroxide of different concentrations .

The Bureau of Mines studied single - step catalytic vapor - phase hydrogenation of oils derived from coal and oil shale . Treatment of middle oil , from hydrogenation of bituminous coal , gave good yields of gasoline with a German - made molybdenum- zinc - chromium catalyst . The Bureau also achieved good results with duplicates of this catalyst made from domestic raw materials . In one set of experiments with the German catalyst , 38 to 52 wt pct of feed was converted to gasoline . The total liquid product was 91 to 98 wt pct of the feed . Not all this gasoline can be claimed as production , however , because about 20 pct of the feed was in the gasoline range , and part of it undoubtedly survived the hydrocracking treatment . Hydrogenation of crude shale oil in the presence of cobalt molybdate catalyst produced a total liquid product of 89 wt pct of feed . The hydrogenation converted 27 wt pct of feed to gasoline and 44 wt pct of feed to diesel fuel . The remaining liquid product , 18 wt pct of feed , was residue boiling above diesel fuel . The gasoline was of poor quality , with an octane number of 39.1 . The overall product seemed a suitable feed stock for a conventional refining operation . Coker distillate hydrogenation , using a cobalt molybdate catalyst , gave a total liquid product of 97 vol pct of feed ; of this product 60 vol pct was jet fuel and 40 vol pct was diesel fuel . "The number of persons fatally injured in the petroleum industry in California in 1930 was 50, a decrease of 20.6 per cent from 1929, when 63 men accidentally lost their lives. The decrease in the number of fatalities for 1930 has caused the first downward trend in the fatality curve of the California petroleum industry since 1927 and is coincident with a period of little active development in new fields, the shutting in of many wells, and reduced activity in the older fields of the State. That a direct relationship exists between the number of accidental deaths and the rapidity of new field development is particularly emphasized by the fact that in 1929, a year of intensive field development in California, 48 men were killed in the drilling and producing division, whereas in 1930, a year of less development work, only 25 men were killed in this division,The figures for the average number of drilling and producing wells in 1930 decreased appreciably from comparable figures for 1929 and a greater percentage of producing wells were shut—in in 1930 than in 1929."

The U.S. Bureau of Mines constructed a full-scale model of a 15-ft-wide coal mine entry to use in combination with finite-element analyses to investigate roof support systems and various types of roof bolts. The objective was to enhance understanding of the fundamental mechanics of the interaction between rock and supports and the relative integrity of bolted mine roof as a function of roof bolt type, length, spacing, and tension, and the basic characteristics of the roof strata. The laboratory test results, when correlated with computer simulations using fmite-element analysis and underground verification tests, should provide a basis for desigillng safer, more cost-effective roof control systems and help to establish guidelines for employing fully grouted resin and mechanically anchored bolting systems. The background for this research, the research approach, the methods and equipment employed, and the results are described in this report.

Before 1914 , Chile , because of her extensive resources of natural nitrates , practically monopolized the world markets for one of the leading fertilizer materials . Since nitrogen also is an important war material , constituting in fact the principal ingredient in many high-powered explosives , the World War and the widespread insistence upon national self- sufficiency for war materials brought about the development of nitrogen fixation plants in all of the larger countries . The production of by- product ammonia from gas and coke plants was likewise stimulated . As a result , Chile , even after the ocean lanes were reopened , was forced to fight for her lost markets . Since the world capacity to produce is still far in excess of annual consumption , the competition between natural and synthetic supplies has been keen and prices have fallen below pre-war levels . Chile has recently succeeded in unifying her industry , utilizing the most efficient process now in operation, and the Government is a partner in the new company that will take over all of the present producing companies . These developments place Chilean nitrate of soda , in a much more favorable position among the markets of the world . More intense competition will undoubtedly follow and , in order that those interested may become familiar with the fields upon which the nitrogen conflicts of the near future may be waged , the following general summary of the nitrogen industry has been prepared .

An investigation was conducted to determine the relationship between ASTM and Micum tumbler data and to develop equations that would enable the conversion of data from one test method for comparison with those determined by the other , and thereby facilitate the international exchange of data . Relative strengths of 18 commercially produced cokes were determined by ASTM and Micum tumblers and ASTM shatter test . Two of the samples were coke produced for foundry use , and two were produced in beehive ovens . The remaining 14 samples were produced for blast furnace consumption and had ASTM tumbler stabilities of 36 to 58. Statistical procedures were used to relate the three test methods and also to evaluate the effect of charge weights , top sizes of coke , and types of screens specified by the two standard tumbler procedures , square - hole wire mesh for the ASTM tumbler and punched round - hole for the Micum . A significant result was that the data obtained with like screens have a higher degree of correlation with a smaller standard deviation than data from the screens specified for each tumbler .

The mass spectra of 14 previously unreported alkylthiophenes are pre-sented. Low ionization voltage data of selected compounds from these 14 and 23 previously reported alkylthiophenes are presented and discussed for their value in supporting fragmentation mechanisms analytical correlations. A comparison with and corroboration of earlier correlations is made. Additional correlations concerning detection of side chain branching and the detection of ethyl-alkyl and propyl-alkylthiophenes are made. A discussion of the possible fragmentation routes and mechanism of fragmentation is given. Speculative structures are inferred s out some of the ions and hence this work provides a basis for suggesting fation mechanisms for the alkylthiophenes according to modern theories ass spectrometry. Verification of these mechanisms must await the availability of isotopically labeled molecules which are labeled in specific lotions that permit the definition of the paths of frag-mentation. Some suggestions for further work to generalize on the correlations and studies made to this point are presented.

This report describes the new Bureau of Mines Core Repository System (CORES) and presents the methods for selecting, processing, and storing physical samples and descriptive data for future reference by earth scientists. The system preserves splits of chip samples and longitudinally sliced segments of core. A records retrieval system provides for storage of data on microfilm and magnetic tapes and uses the keysort parameters of location and commodity for the identification of data.

The Petroleum Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines at Laramie, Wyo., in cooperation with the University of Wyoming, has in progress chemical and refining studies of Wyoming black oils. In general, these crude oils are characterized by their high sulphur, high asphalt, and low gasoline content and are called black oils because of these properties and their color. Characteristics of the various Wyoming black crude oils, as determined by the Bureau of Mines Hempel method of analysis, have been pubished.4/
