The use of nuclear fission for chemical process heat offers the special advantage of high temperature, limited only by materials of construction. The process heat may be supplied economically at elevated pressures, since no compression of combustion air is required. For the initial effort in developing a high-temperature reactor, the indirect cycle, using helium as the heat-transfer medium, was chosen. The major problems are the design of high-temperature fuel elements, construction of an exchanger to transfer heat to process streams in the range of 2,500° F., and development of compressors capable of recycling helium at 1,000° F. and above. A conceptual design of a nuclear reactor to furnish process heat for coal gasification has been made. Spherical fuel elements utilizing a graphite structure, impregnated with uranium carbide fuel, were chosen, as spheres offer the possibility of easier loading and unloading of the reactor. Calculations of pressure drop and gas-pumping power for the system are included.

In 2005, a total of 4,490 stone mining operations reported employment to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Stone mines comprised 30.6% of all mining operations. ? Mines producing the primary commodity of limestone (crushed and broken) comprised the largest number of operations (n=2,039; 45.4%). ? Stone mining operations were located in all states and territories except Delaware and North Dakota. ? Of all states, Pennsylvania had the most stone mines (n=379; 8.4%).

Late in the nineteenth century en active coal-mining industry was begun in the Lower Freeport bed near Reynoldsville, Pa., where the bed thickened to more than 10 feet in places . The coal was readily accepted as an excellent steam fuel. Much of the thick coal his been depleted, but there are many areas where the deposit averages about 14 feet in thickness. As the more desirable mining sites were worked out in the Lower Freeport bed, other beds were exposed from which will come the county's major cowl production in future. The Lower Freeport bed is still the most important bed in Jefferson County from a production standpoint. The Lower Kittanning bed is second. Sporadic mining is being done in the Upper Freeport, Upper Kittanning, Middle Kittanning, Clarion, and Brookville beds. Strip mining has permitted recovery of much coal that could not be mined profitably by conventional underground methods.

The Ore Hill zinc-lead mine in Grafton County, N. H., was investigated by the Bureau of Mines from March to July 1943 and from August to October 1944. Fourteen holes with an aggregate bore of 4,899 feet were diamond-drilled, the old workings were unwatered and sampled to an inclined depth of 250 feet, and the tailings dumps were surveyed and sampled. The deposit at the Ore Hill mine comprises a bedding-plane vein of massive sphalerite and galena with subordinate chalcopyrite and pyrite in a series of interbedded metasedimentary and metavolcanic schists about one-quarter mile east of their contact with the intrusive Baker Pond gneiss. The property was first opened about 1850 and was active at times to 1914. Production records are not available, but the output is believed to have been considerable. In 1944, leasers recovered a marketable mica product from mica schist from the dumps and certain outcrops. This report describes the work performed in the Bureau's investigation and presents the data obtained.

The value of Alabama's nonfuel mineral production in 1978 and 1979 was 8831.8 million and $336.4 million, respectively. In 1978, nearly all commodities registered an increase in production and value; unit value increased for all commodities, with the exception of native asphalt and sand and gravel. Alabama led the Nation in the production of crushed marble and was second in bauxite, third in masonry cement, kaolin, native asphalt, and oyster shell, and fourth in bentonite, dimension marble, fire clay, and scrap mica. Trend; and Developments.-The Alabama State Docks at the Port of Mobile handled more than 10 million tons of bulk material in fiscal year 1978; volume dropped slightly to 9.8 million tons in fiscal 1979. Bulk materials comprise the major activity at the facility, with iron ore and bauxite being two of the major materials handled. The movement of these ores is vital to the operation of many heavy industries in the State.

This report presents test results, data evaluations, and typical system performance expectations based on wireless electromagnetic propagation measurements performed in the MAGMA Copper Company's San Manuel mine near Tuscon, Arizona during March 30 through April 2 1981. In particular, and at the Bureau's request, this work was coordinated with testing of MF prototype vehicular radios being developed by A.R.F. Products, Inc. with USBM support under Contract H0308004 as part of a system to be marketed by Mine Safety Appliance Co. This testing also employed a prototype vehicular antenna developed by Terry S. Cory, P.E. with USBM upport under previous Contract P0382223. The work was performed under USBM contract J0308012, Propagation of EM Signals in Underground Metal/Non-metal Mines. The authors wish to thank Mr. Hank Seany, Manager of Mines and Mr. Bob Zerga, Mine Superintendent who so kindly arranged for the visit. Particular thanks are given to Mr. Al Metcalf who arranged the logistical details of our underground work, and whoa forward thinking program toward improving general mine communications at MAGMA provided the test-bed context for evaluation of the prototype equipment. Mr. Jiminez's effort was instrumental in performing the testing, and he also provided a detailed understanding of the existing multi-level, multi-frequency trolleyphone system at MAGMA. the authors are also indebted to Dr. Larry Stolarczyk of A.R.F. for numerous detailed consultations on MF technology, and who was present and participated in the majority of the testing. 1.1 GENERAL BACKGROUND ON COPPER MINING AT MAGMA the San Manuel mine is the largest copper mine in the U.S., efficiently extracting copper and molybdenum sulfide from the low-grade San Manuel ore body.This ellipsoidal ore-shell body, with major workings located 2000-3000 feet mbelow the surface, has ore shell thickness varying between 100 and 1000 feet over a longitudinal extent of some 8000 feet, and with major & minor crossectional axes of about 5000 and 2500 feet respectively. The San Manuel mine operation employs in excess of 1000 men/shift with gross ore production between 60,000 and 70,000 tons/day. The mining operation employs the block caving technique; actively being implemented on three levels (2075,2375,2675 feet for haulage, and 2015,2315,2615 product/grizzly levels). The ore haulage is largely via D.C. trolley trains to four (3A,3B,3C,3D) product shafts for skipping to the surface. An additional three shafts at two locations are used to convey men, materials, and developmental rock extractions into and out of the mine. On each haulage level, the trains carry ore an average of two miles one-way from the ore raises to the dump points. 1.2 TOPOLOGICAL BRIEF OF THE HAULAGE LEVELS The 2375 level, on which all the testing was conducted, is illustrated in

The Victorville cement plant of the Southwestern Portland Cement Co. is located about 1 mile from the city of Victorville, Calif. Two transcontinental railway systems, the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe, and the Southern Pacific Railroad, afford shipped facilities. The plant is modern and well kept, as the officials, especially the higher operating officials, take pride in the appearance of the place. Dust has been practically eliminated by the installation of dust collectors and wet grinding. The plant has a rated capacity of 5,000 barrels of cement daily.

The present status of the National Bureau of Standards program is that many magnetic tapes of analog data have been recorded in four major mines. Each mine uses different types of equipment. In addition, some surface measurements of noise have been made at two additional mines. Two types of recordings have been made: (1) broadband measurements for spectral plots and (2) narrowband measurements for amplitude probability density (APD) plots. Only data from one mine (Robena #4) has been processed and was, presented at this workshop. The short-term goals are: (1) finish processing data from the other mines, (2) establish or reduce measurement system uncertainties, (3) put Robella report into final form for distribution, and (4) hold a review to determine what has been done, to distribute and to interpret the preliminary data, and to determine what still needs to be done. Long-term goals are: (1) complete final reports on each of the mine trips, (2) establish techniques for predicting noise in mines already visited and establish uncertainty bounds for these predictions, and (3) establish techniques for predicting noise in mines that have not been visited (but that use similar equipment to those visited) and also establish uncertainty bounds for these predictions. Specific factors or formats to be presented include: (A) For underground broadband measurements: 1. 300 Hz to 100 kHz spectral plots 2. 300 Hz to 384 kHz spectral plots 3. 300 Hz to 192 kHz spectral plots 4. 300 Hz to 6kHz (subject to change to 3 or 12 kHz) spectral plots (B) For surface broadband measurements: 1. 300 Hz to 6 kHz (or 12 kHz) spectral plots 2. 300 Hz to 3 kHz spectral plots (C) For underground narrowband measurements : 1. The Bureau of Mines laboratory tested the response of a commercially available real-time aerosol monitor (GCA RAM-1) to various dusts. Monitor measurements were recorded, averaged, and compared with simultaneous gravimtric measurements of each test dust. Tests usually lasted several hours. The test dusts of various particle size distributions used included coal, limestone, and a commercially available test dust. For each particular dust, the monitor response was linear and correlated well with mass concentration over the range of about 0.5 to 10 mg/m3. The monitor can estimate a 2.0-/m3 respirable coal dust concentration within as little as 26 pct with 95 pct confidence. The monitor must, however, be calibrated with the dust to be measured because the instrument response is affected by the type of dust particle. The average monitor response to same mass concentration of coal dust was approximately twice the average monitor response to the same mass concentration of limestone dust.

In 2007, a total of 278 metal mining operations reported employment to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA).1 Metal mines were the smallest mining commodity sector, comprising 1.9% of all mining operations. ? Gold mines comprised 44.6% (n=124) of all metal mining operations. Other common types of metal mines were iron ore (n=36; 12.9%) and copper ore (n=35; 12.6%). ? Nevada had the largest number of metal mines (n=45; 16.2%), followed by Alaska (n=28; 10.1%).

The principles and application of amalgam electrolysis to the recovery of zinc and tin from secondary products were studied; this Bureau of Mines project was one phase of investigating the development of more efficient methods for processing iron-bearing zinc and tin to produce both base metals of high purity. Zinc of 99-99-percent purity was recovered from galvanizer's dross with recovery efficiency of 98 percent. Tin of 99.9-to 99.99-percent purity was recovered from hardhead with recovery efficiency of 81 percent. Both materials were treated by the same method in separate systems. Mercury was used to leach zinc from dross and tin from hardhead to form amalgams of each metal, both of which were subsequently refined electrolytically to produce high-purity metal. Impurities that were contained in both secondary products behaved as theoretically predicted; impurities that were insoluble in mercury remained as sludge in the leaching column. Except for lead, the readily amalgamated impurities were prevented from fouling the electrolyte by the blocking action of the amalgam electrode. Lead impurity in the tin-refining system dissolved and immediately precipitated as the sulfate. The primary advantage of the amalgam refining method lies in direct recovery of the extremely pure base metal from highly contaminated secondary material.

Table 19 and figure 7 show the number of fires and fire injuries for surface metal/nonmetal mines by state during 1990-2001. Table 19 also shows the injury risk rates, employees' working hours, and lost workdays. A total of 79 fires occurred in 16 states during 1990-2001 for these mines. Forty-five of the fires caused 44 injuries and 2 fatalities (including 9 fires and 7 injuries involving contractors). The yearly average was 6.6 fires and 3.7 injuries. Sixty-five fires with 31 injuries and 2 fatalities occurred at metal mines, and 14 fires with 13 injuries occurred at nonmetal mines. The Ewhr value was 546 x 106 hr (In = 0.016), and the LWD value was 13,134. Nevada and Arizona had the most fires (19 fires, 10 injuries, and 1 fatality; and 19 fires and 11 injuries, respectively). They were followed by Minnesota (11 fires, 4 injuries, and 1 fatality) and Alaska (6 fires and 4 injuries). Of these states, Alaska had the highest injury risk rate value (In = 0.079). Table 20, partly illustrated in figure 8, shows the number of fires, fire injuries, fire fatalities, risk rates, employees' working hours, and lost workdays by time period. The number of fires increased during the second period, then decreased during most of the remaining periods. The number of fire injuries decreased during most of the periods (a small increase is seen during the last period), accompanied by a decline in employees' working hours during most of the periods (a small increase is seen during the third and fourth periods). The In values follow patterns similar to those shown by the number of fire injuries. Tables 21-26 show the number of fires by ignition source, method of detection and suppression, equipment involved, location, and burning material by time period. Figure 9 shows the major variables related to fires for 1990-2001. Table 27 shows the number of fire injuries per number of fires causing injuries and total fires by year, ignition source, equipment involved, and location.

OUTPUT of carbon black in 1959 increased in all producing States except New Mexico. The national increase was 20 percent. Domestic sales and exports increased 22 percent and 16 percent, respectively, resulting in a 21 percent gain in sales. Sales to the rubber industry, which purchased 95 percent of the domestic output of carbon black, increased 23 percent. Sales to all other major consumers also increased. This paper is one of a series being published by the Bureau of Mines on milling methods and costs. It describes briefly the procedure followed in concentrating hübnerite or? at the Ima tungsten mine, Lemhi County, Idaho. In October 1911 the Ima mill was utilizing combined gravity-concentration, flotation, and magnetic-separation units for the recovery of a tungsten concentrate and a pyritic silver concentrate approximately 120 tons of ore averaging 0.5 percent W03 is treated daily. The concentrates produced average 66 to 67 percent WO3.
