The technology of clay and the manufacture of ceramic products therefrom, and also the clay resources of most of the individual States, are already covered by a voluminous literature. The present resume touches these matters only briefly; its purpose is essentially to bring together in small compass certain of the elementary factors affecting the potential commercial value of a clay deposit. In its preparation the author made extensive use of the annual chapters on Clay in Mineral Resources of the United States and in the two annual issues of the Minerals. Yearbook that succeeded them. For careful review and constructive criticism of the manuscript, the author is indebted to Hewitt Wilson. GENERAL DESCRIPTION The term ?clay? includes a great variety of substances that may differ widely in chemical mineralogical and physical properties. No two clays are exactly alike. All of them however, have the prominent characteristic of becoming more or less plastic when wet. Nearly all of the useful clays can be molded into articles, will hold their shape while being dried, and can be converted into a hard, rocklike substance by heat. Clay may, and in fact usually does, consist of a number of minerals among the commonest of which are kaolinite, quartz, feldspar, iron oxides, mica, bauxite, calcite, and manganese oxides. Organic matter is often present. Pure kaolinite, which has the formula A1203. 2 SiO2. 2H2O, is ordinarily, considered to be the parent "clay substance," butt most clays contain other hydrated mixtures of alumina and silica (aluminosilicic acids) along with indefinite amounts of sand and other nonessential minerals3/ Even, this so-called inert matter affects the plasticity, drying shrinkage, ease of drying, and final density, and at high temperatures may react chemically with the clay substance.

"INTRODUCTION For a number of years manganiferous iron ore has been mined on a small scale at Boston Hill, in Grant County, N. Mex. Total production up to 1943 is estimated to be over 793,000 long tons, containing 8 to 35 percent manganese and 26 to 46 percent iron. 4/ During 1941 to 1943 production was estimated to be 206,000 long tons, containing about 13 percent manganese and 37 percent iron. During 1944 daily production was several hundred tons, mostly from a single open pit. Several moderately large deposits have been mined: and many smaller ones have been found.From February to April 1945 geophysical surveys were carried out on Boston Hill by the Division of Geophysical Exploration, in cooperation with District 5, Central Region, Bureau of Mines, to determine if hitherto undiscovered manganiferous iron deposits exist. Field work was interrupted for a total of about 1 month during this period by work on other projects in nearby areas. Previous to the geophysical surveys, a preliminary examination was made by H. R. Joesting to determine if geophysical methods could be utilized in exploring the area. 5/Field measurements were made by L. O. Bacon and J. H. Getz, project geo¬physicists of the Bureau of Mines, under the general supervision of H. R. Joesting. A grid survey of the area, to locate geophysical stations, was made by Paul Russell, Bureau of Mines engineer, who also collected specimens for laboratory tests. Most of the computations and the preliminary magnetic and resistivity maps were made by L. 0. Bacon."

This study was made to show the growth of petroleum coking and to deter- mine trends and characteristics of marketing and utilization of coke on the West Coast, comparing these data with those of the United States as a whole. An earlier Bureau of Mines economic survey of petroleum coke was made in 1930 before the widespread use of coking processes. Data, derived from published and unpublished literature as well as from interviews with industry representatives, show a marked increase in the production of petroleum coke since the end of World War II. This increase resulted from the need of refiners to upgrade heavy residuums for which the demand was diminishing. Increasing coke production as well as significant market shifts away from California-produced coke have created excessive stocks of petroleum coke on the West Coast. The causes of these market shifts were based mainly on (1) economic factors and (2) certain undesirable qualities of some of the petroleum coke produced in California.

The Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 requires each mine operator to implement the respirable dust sampling program established by the Secretary of the Interior and the Secretary of Health, Education, and Welfare. This program requires frequent sampling of "high-risk" face workers and periodic sampling of other underground workers. Dust samples are collected by the coal mine operator and weighed at the Bureau's Pittsburgh Field Health Group, and the results are processed by the Bureau's Automatic Data Processing Section located in Denver, Colo. This paper presents the system employed by the Bureau to weigh the dust samples and to process and store the data.

The Portland beryl-mica district, Middlesex County, Conn., comprises three deposits investigated by the Bureau of Mines in 1943. The Gotta-Walden deposit is in a pegmatite dike 4 to 20 feet thick, which cuts gneiss and schist. In general, the hanging wall is rich in mica and beryl with some feldspar, quartz, and garnet. The central core is usually high in quartz and feldspar, with relatively little mica and beryl. The footwall comprises quartz and feldspar, with varying amounts of mica and some beryl. The beryl crystals range in color from green to almost golden and have a maximum diameter of inches. Results of surface trenches indicate a beryl content of 0.81 percent for the pegmatite. A small production of beryl, feldspar, and scrap mica has been made from the deposit.

[The Bureau of rides is making a general study of the occurrence of the Clinton red iron ores of Alabama. In the course of this study, it developed that the iron-ore seams of the Woodstock and Bucksville areas were virtually unexplored., and the nature and extent of the ore deposits were undetermined. As a part of the work of the project, the Bureau investigated the occurrence of red iron ore in the .areas. Eighty-four channel samples, representing 317.6 linear feet, were taken from l2 locations along the outcrop of the red iron-ore seams, Ten diamond-drill holes, amounting to 3915.5 linear feet, were drilled. In these areas, commercial- and marginal-grade ores of minable thickness have been shown. It is estimated that 4,500,000 tons of indicated ore and 6,700,000 tens of inferred commercial-grade ore averaging 5.1 feet thick, 47.6 percent Fe, 26.1 percent insoluble, 0.1 percent CaO, and 0.04 percent P; 7,200,000 tins of inferred marginal grade ore averaging 6.1 feet thick, 36.2 percent Fe, .35.0 percent insoluble, 3.9 percent CaO, and 0.14 percent P; and 18,500,000 tons of ferruginous sandstone averaging 12.2 feet thick, 19.2 percent re, 50.1 percent insoluble, 9.6 percent CaO, and 0.14 percent P are present in the areas.. All tonnages are estimated as gross tons of recoverable ore in place, based' on 65-percent mining recovery. In accordance with established policy of the Bureau of Mines of publishing factual data as soon as possible after completion of field work, this description of the Woodstock and Bucksville areas is presented. "The El Dorado copper mine is situated in the foothill copper-zinc belt of California, which traverses the western slope of the Sierra Nevada with unusual persistence from Butte County to Kern County, a distance of more than 300 miles. Although this area contains such important past producers as the Penn mine, Union, and others, a great part of the current production has been derived from smaller properties, which depend largely on premium metal prices for economical operation. The El Dorado mine is in the latter group, which constitutes an important source of metal in a national emergency.Exploration by the Bureau of Mines by means of eight diamond-drill holes Indicated narrow, intermittent lenses of copper ore along structures boo feet in length. The copper occurs in massive sulfides composed of chalcopyrite, pyrite, pyrrhotite, and minor quantities of bernite. The sulfides have evidently replaced tuffs, which are interbedded with the Mariposa slates and shales.H. A. Weiler and Hal T. Hall, owners of the El Dorado copper property, requested an examination by the Bureau during the latter part of 1914. In December of that year an engineer of the Bureau of Mines visited the mine and recommended the project work undertaken. The purpose was to aid the owners in bringing the property into production of copper and zinc, which at that time was critically essential to the war industries.Complete factual data obtained by the exploration are embodied in this report.In its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, R. G, Knickerbocker, chief, analyzes samples and performs beneficiation tests. Both these branches are under the supervision of Dr. R. S. Dean, assistant director.Acknowledgment is made to A. O. "Simple systematic accounting that adequately records all transactions has long been regarded as essential to the welfare of any business enterprise. Some of the defects that detract from the prosperity of the slate industry are attributable to a lack of effectiveness in cost keeping. This condition has prompted the United States Bureau of Mines to make a detailed study of accounting methods for the slate industry, and to present for consideration a system of accounts, which it is believed would enable the industry to attain more economical management and operation if accepted by a fair proportion of its important units.The method of accounting presented herein has been worked out with the assistance of leading slate producers and the recommendation are tentative and are submitted in this form as a means of developing constructive criticism. Believing that cooperative effort in this, as in many other problems, will bring the most enduring benefits to the industry as a whole, the writer urges that the most earnest consideration be given to this vital problem now facing the slate industry.Grateful acknowledgment is made of the helpful assistance rendered by R. E. Eckert of the accounting firm of Eckert, Degan, and Palmer of Easton, Pa., in compiling the charts and the explanatory text. He has brought to this work a wide knowledge of accountancy, supplemented by a background of direct contact with the slate industry, and his presence at the various conferences has been of great advantage in clearing up difficulties. [Health and safety hazards from contamination of the atmosphere in places frequented by persons depend to a considerable extent on whether the contaminating agent possesses sense-perceptive properties which will give warning of its presence before it '.an create harmful conditions. If a distinct and easily recognized warning is given in advance of harmful conditions, hazards ace mitigated, but if warning properties are inadequate or absent, the hazards are augmented. When evaluating the hazard presented by a potentially harmful substance used under conditions of possible escape into the air of places frequented by persons, it is therefore necessary to consider the warning properties of the substance along with ether pertinent information such as toxicity, inflammability, physical properties, and mode of use. If the contaminating agent inherently lacks warning; properties it may be possible to impart them by adding to the hazardous substance a small quantity of a relatively harmless substance which has a high warning intensity.]

This report contains Bureau of Mines analyses of 291 samples of crude petroleum from the Gulf Coast Area of Louisiana and Texas. Included are 65 analyses from 51 Louisiana fields and 226 analyses from 216 Texas fields. Analyses from the Texas fields include 90 from 58 Upper Gulf Coast fields, 47 from 28 Middle Gulf Coast fields, and 89 from 40 Lower Gulf Coast fields. The analyses represent fields that produced 1,000 barrels or more per day during at least one of the years 19.57 through 1961, with the exception of 23 analyses from the Texas fields. The fields considered are listed by state and geographical groupings, with field names arranged alphabetically within each grouping. The tabulation also includes information concerning the geological sources of the samples. General characteristics of the crude oils and analytical and computed data determined from the analyses are summarized. Crude oil production data are given for the fields for 1960 and 1961 and are cumulative through 1961.

"INTRODUCTION 'The investigation reported herein is part of a comprehensive research program being conducted by the Metal Mining Research Section, Mining Division, Bureau of Mines, on pressure problems in underground mines. This program was initiated in 1937 and for the first 3 years was concerned primarily with measurement of the pressure on mine pillars and supports and their strength. 4/ 5/ During this period, investigations were conducted in both the laboratory and the field in the comparatively shallow load and zinc mines of Missouri and Oklahoma. As a result a seismic method of determining the pressure on mine pillars was developed.Before this research program was initiated, Chas. F. Jackson, chief of the Mining Division, suggested that rock under pressure might give rise to noises inaudible to the unaided ear - that is, subaudible noises. As a result of this suggestion, listening tests were made concurrently with the routine pressure measurements to see if any rock noises were present; with one exception, it was found there were no rock noises in any of these shallow mines. At the same time, pressure measurements disclosed that, with one exception, pillars were not under pressure amounting to more than 10 percent of the crushing strength of the rock. The one exception was a pillar in the Big John mine of the Eagle Picher Mining & Smelting Co. in the Tri-State district, which showed some physical evidence of failure, such as small cracks and spalling; it was reported that the pillar had been heard to crack or snap at intervals. Listening tests in this pillar disclosed that subaudible noises of comparatively small intensity were present and occurred at 1- to 2-minute intervals, on the average. Unfortunately, owing to the shortness of this pillar it was impossible to make any pressure measurements."

This Information Circular describes the development of block-caving methods and practices by the Miami Copper Co. at the Miami mine in Gila County, Arizona. It is one of a series published by the Bureau of Mines on mining methods, practices, and costs in various mining districts of the United States. This report gives a history of the district and outlines early prospecting and exploration including methods of sampling and estimation of ore tonnage and value at the Miami mine. Early mining methods are described, particularly those that influenced developments in the caving method. Mine exploration, development, and operating methods for block caving are described with particular attention to those factors, physical, economic, engineering, and managerial that have improved efficiency in the mining operations over a long productive period. Extraction, ventilation, wage system, safety, water supply, power plant, and shop facilities are discussed. The last section gives a brief sumary of such costs as are available for publication.

The Bureau of Mines conducted electric furnace smelting tests on sintered flotation concentrate and siliceous log-washed are. The flotation concentrate was derived from the Maggie Canyon deposit of the Artillery Mountains area, Mohave County, Ariz., and contained, before sintering, 35.6 percent Mil and 19.4 percent Si02 + A1203. The log-washed ore was from the McGregor deposit of the Artillery Mountains area, Mohave County, Ariz., and contained 31.2 to 33.6 percent Mil, 19.5 to 27.6 percent Si02 + A1203, and 2.5 percent Pb. This work was undertaken to determine the most effective smelting technique for producing standard products from such nonspecification ore and concentrates. The objective was to collect data, using a small furnace, which would be reasonably accurate and permit extrapolation to large-scale practice for comparing with results on specification-grade are.

This report concerns types, quantities, specifications, and uses of non-metallic minerals as a basis for improving their supply, conservation, and utilization. Supply-demand details concerning mineral fillers, roofing granules, and roofing rock used in asphalt are incorporated in this report, along with highlights on production and sales of roofing, floor tile, and other related asphalt products of California. Comparable data for the United States are included. Although large quantities of commercially prepared mineral fillers are used in asphalt for paving and related applications in other States, addition of commercial fillers for these uses rarely is required in California because of the natural fines available. On the other hand, California manufacturers of asphalt products other than paving utilize about 300,000 tons of asbestos, diatomite, limestone, mica, soapstone, slate, and other nonmetallic minerals as filler, mainly for roofing and flooring. Also, about 500,000 tons of roofing granules is produced in California, most of which goes into roofing manufacture in California. In addition, a significantly large and growing tonnage of relatively coarse mineral aggregates are used on low-angle, built-up, asphalt roofs to produce an attractive surface and offer protection against the elements. Nearly all minerals used in asphalt products manufactured in California come from local sources, except asbestos and mica--and there are indications that local deposits of these commodities could be utilized in some use categories.

A frequency-shift keying (FSK) modulator-demodulator (modem) network has been devised for the Bureau of Mines mine-monitoring systems. This network permits an unlimited number of remote stations to communicate with one central station over the same pair of wires. The network operates at a speed of 4,800 Bd at distances up to 5 miles. This report describes the development and operation of the modems. The theory of operation, schematic diagrams, and printed circuit board layouts are provided. Although the modems were built for a specific application, a more general use is discussed whereby the network would operate with a typical serial channel format.

The evolution of surface mining equipment has resulted in larger, faster haulage units, loaders, etc., resulting in increased demands on steering technology. Careful analysis of these systems was warranted to determine if steering-related safety problems have been introduced. The objectives of this program were to: 1. Define the generic types of steering systems being used on mobile mining equipment used in surface mining operations. 2. Gather information on steering-related accidents in mining operations. 3. Assess the need for initiating government-sponsored research into steering system technology. A comprehensive literature survey was conducted concurrent with extensive contacts with mining operations, mining equipment manufacturers, steering system component manufacturers, and government agencies. A Technical Evaluation Group composed of representatives from the above organizations was formed to review the data gathered. It was concluded that the steering systems in use on surface mining equipment are reliable and do not present a safety problem. The Society of Automotive Engineers, Inc. is active in pre-paring voluntary consensus standards to assure that the minimum levels of performance are defined for industry.
