Coagulation is basically an aggregation process where particles settle under the influence of interfacial forces with electrostatic forces playing a governing role. Although particle morphology consisting of shape and roughness dictates the physical encounter of two particles, their eventual coagulation is not only influenced by columbic forces but also other interfacial forces such as hydrophobic interaction, which affects the extent of aggregation of particles through increasing the distance of interaction. Roughness is well known to increase the effective contact angle on hydrophobic surfaces and also enhance interfacial forces. In this study, the effect of morphology of particles and particularly roughness on the settling velocity and in turn coagulation tendency was investigated. Batch settling tests (BSTs) of different particle morphologies were investigated as a function of pH. Two different morphologies of silica particles were utilized with the same particle size distribution (PSD) including smooth-spherical and rough-spherical (Etched). Rough particles were prepared by acid etching technique using hydrofluoric (HF) at different time intervals (15-300 sec). Etched samples were identified and quantified by optic profilometry. Settling test results showed that the settling velocity of particles in a suspension of 2% solids in the massive settling region is significantly affected by particle morphology of the suspension. Coagulation results further revealed that aggregation of rough particles is faster than smooth-spherical particles. Coagulation results are elucidated on the basis of particle morphology and its effect on distance of separation through hydrophobic forces.

A coupled fluid/structure model has been developed to simulate semi-solid deformation in an industrial aluminum casting alloy, A356. Although this alloy has a significant eutectic fraction, nearly 50%, it still shows susceptibility to hot tearing. The model geometry consists of solid grains, created from a Voronoi tessellation of the domain, surrounded by liquid. The simulation is performed using the commercial codes, Abaqus Standard and Abaqus CFD. The solid model calculates the velocity, stresses and distortions in response to an applied uniaxial strain, and transmits them to the fluid-flow model, which computes the velocity and pressure fields in the liquid. It was shown that grain size and configuration, fraction solid and fluid properties all affect the semi-solid deformation behaviour.

To achieve penetration on the energy market, hydrogen must overcome obstacles in the areas of storage, safety and infrastructure. One of the most important is the onboard storage of hydrogen for transportation applications, where large performance gaps exist between the current state of the technology and user expectations. In order to develop and demonstrate viable hydrogen storage technologies for cars, a set of gravimetric and volumetric system targets have been proposed by the US Department of Energy, based on achieving a driving range of 500 km for a hydrogen powered vehicle. A factor of 2 to 3 improvement in both hydrogen storage capacity and energy density is needed along with several other performance goals. Another key issue is safety. Although some of the safety issues can be arguably assigned to misperceptions, hydrogen has specific properties that have to be addressed, particularly in confined geometries where the risk of hydrogen detonations becomes an issue.

INTRODUCTION ?This bull gear inspection technique was developed to provide more accurate data and faster inspection times than current techniques used today. ?Eddy Current Array (ECA) is a non-destructive testing technique that provides the ability to electronically drive multiple eddy current coils, which are placed side by side in the same probe assembly. Each individual eddy current coil in the probe produces a signal relative to the phase and amplitude of the structure below it. ?This data is referenced to an encoded position and time and represented graphically as a C-scan image. Most conventional eddy current flaw detection techniques can be reproduced with ECA inspections; however, the remarkable advantages of ECA technology allow improved inspection capabilities and significant time-savings.

"Palabora Mining Copper has a unique ore body composition which unlike other copper ore bodies has three main components in significant proportions; these are copper bearing ore, magnetite and dolerite. The high content of dolerite, a hard barren material, creates a high proportion of pebbles which normally are recycled back to the mill. This action increases the mill bearing pressure and power progressively until corrective actions are taken.A logical action to solve the pebbles generation would be to incorporate a pebble crusher. This in fact was done however two fundamental issues were encountered; the high content of magnetite and existence of a cyclone classification section. Due to the high content of magnetite, metal detectors have not been able to work efficiently to separate tramp metal which causes damage to the pebble crushers. The existence of cyclones in the circuit had a detrimental effect on the final product when the pebbles crusher was online producing coarse sandy material.Due to the difficulties in treating pebbles via conventional procedures and the unique Palabora ore composition and characteristics, sorting technology was investigated at laboratory and pilot scale. It was found that a combination of optical and electromagnetic sorting could efficiently separate dolerite from the copper bearing and magnetite ores.This paper reports the findings of the laboratory and pilot scale work performed and discusses the additional benefits to the circuit."

The Corbet deposit is one of 17 proximal Cu-Zn massive sulfide deposits located. within the Noranda Cauldron which occurs within the core of the Noranda Volcanic Complex. The deposit is located at the top of the Havrian Formation, the lowermost formation of the 3000 m thick Mine Sequence; the deposit has Yielded 2.75 M tonnes of ore grading 3% Cu, 0.96% Zn, 2.06 g/t Ag and 1.0 g/t Au. The multi-lens Corbet deposit formed within a 250 m wide crater that occurs within a localized breccia pile. The Corbet breccia pile was constructed by explosive magmatic and hydrovolcanic eruptions localized along the south flank of a larger andesitic shield volcano that formed during the waning stages of Havrian volcanism. The breccia footwall of the deposit allowed unfocused and widespread hydrothermal discharge that resulted in the development of a large area of chlorite and fringing sericite alteration that exceeds, by six times, the size of the sulfide lenses and represents a significant exploration target.

"Hot forming and superplasticity in powder metallurgy aluminum alloys and composites is reviewed. The effects of alloy composition, particulate composition, size, and size distribution is summarized. The role of climb distance for recovery is described in connection with the size of strengthening phases. In materials with fine strengthening phases on the order of one micron or less, high strain rate superplastic deformation processes are likely. However, the quality of superplastic deformation depends on the prior processing history, and these effects are reviewed. Very few data describing the effects of hot forming history on post-forming properties exist, but some results emerging in the literature are compared.IntroductionHot deformation in aluminum based materials is done for several technological purposes, such as thermomechanical processing to alter mechanical properties of simple forms, and/or final shaping operations to produce a complex shaped part by means of extrusion, forging, or superplastic forming. In the interest of improving the mechanical properties of aluminum based materials, two microstructural design strategies are commonly used, dispersion strengthening, and composite strengthening. The introduction of fine, stable dispersions is commonly done for high temperature strength, and the dispersions are typically ceramic particles in the range of 10 nm to 1000 nm in volume fractions around 5 vol.% (Higashi et al., 1990; 1991a; 1991b; 1992; Bieler and Mukherjee, 1990; Otsuka et al., 1987; Bieler et al., 1991; Oliver and Nix, 1982). Alternatively, composite strengthening strategies using 10-40 v% of 3 µm to 40 µm ceramic particles provide high modulus and high strength aluminum based materials (Midling and Grong, 1995; Lloyd, 1994; Subramanian et al., 1995)."

Many mines combine open pit with underground mining, and on many occasions the underground mine is an extension of the open-pit. In these circumstances the decision about where the open-pit stops and the underground starts is crucial and driven by many factors. This paper looks at some of the ways that this cut-over can be calculated and specifically examines the calculation of it using modern mine optimization software. The paper provides a case study which will review various outcomes using these techniques, and demonstrates the influence of various factors on the optimal transition cut-over point. Biographies Mr Finch is a Divisional Manager and a Principal consultant at Snowden Mining Industry Consultants in Vancouver, Canada. At Snowden Mr Finch leads a team of engineers that perform mining engineering studies for projects around the world. Prior to joining Snowden Mr Finch was the Mining Manager at Barrick?s Henty mine in Tasmania Australia. Prior to that Mr Finch has held a variety of roles in both consulting and operations working for various organisations at various levels in the Asia Pacific region. Mr Finch gained a bachelor?s degree in Mining Engineering from the University of Queensland in 1986, and a bachelor?s degree in Economics from the University of Queensland in 1993. His expertise is in mine planning, mine optimisation and mine management. Dr Elkington is a Consultant at Snowden Mining Industry Consultants in Perth, Australia. He is responsible for the design and implementation of Snowden?s proprietary optimization software products. Prior to joining Snowden Dr Elkington completed his PhD in Mine Optimisation at The University of Western Australia, and bachelor?s degrees in Engineering (Hons) and Commerce from The University of Western Australia. Published data on thermodynamics of tin in liquid copper, matte and slag have been reviewed, assessed and used in development of thermodynamic solution models of melts. The developed model/database was applied in modelling the Sn deportment in primary copper smelting and e-waste melting processes. The results show that Sn can be removed from the matte through evaporation of various volatile Sn species (with SnS the most volatile) and slagging during copper smelting. The Sn removal increased with increasing matte grade due to the increased gas and slag volume. In the e-waste smelting process, fluxing strategy was developed for smelting e waste to produce a slag with reasonable liquidus and viscosity. Modelling results show that very low amounts of Sn reported to the gas phase due to low S, hence low SnS partial pressure in the system. The black copper produced could contain a few percent of Sn depending on the oxygen potential. The Sn in the black copper could be removed to the slag phase during anode refining. INTRODUCTION Tin is an impurity element commonly found in copper ores, which will be dispersed into various solid, liquid, and gaseous streams during the pyrometallurgical processing of copper. Tin alloy is widely used in electronic soldering due to its low melting point. The growth in treatment of recycled e-waste through primary and secondary copper smelting has led to an increased tin input to the smelting system. Therefore, the deportment of tin between phases is of great interest to the operators of modern smelters. Multi-Phase Equilibrium (MPE) is a thermodynamic package developed by CSIRO for simulating reactions between phases in multi-component and multi-phase systems (Zhang et al., 2002). Over the years the capability of the MPE model has been extended to cover the behavior of a large number of elements in high temperature system (Chen, Zhang, Wright, & Jahanshahi, 2006). In the present paper, the thermodynamic data on tin in liquid copper, matte and slag have been reviewed, assessed and used in the development of a database for Sn slag, alloy and matte phases. The model/database was applied in modelling the tin deportment in primary copper smelting and e-waste smelting processes. The aim of this study is to provide a better understanding of the chemical behaviours of tin in high-temperature copper processing and e-waste smelting.

The distributions of minor elements between slag/metal and slag/matte in equilibrium with tridymite in the Cu-Fe-O-S-Si-Al-Ca system have been investigated in the range of conditions of interest to the high- temperature copper production, refining, and recycling processes. An improved experimental methodology has been used involving high temperature equilibration in controlled gas atmospheres, rapid quenching, and quantitative microanalysis techniques using Electron Probe X-ray Microanalysis (EPMA) and Laser Ablation Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrum (LAICPMS). The effect of oxygen partial pressure on the distributions of minor elements between slag/metal and slag/matte has been accurately measured. The effects of slagging components (Al2O3 and CaO) on the distributions of minor elements between slag/metal have also been experimentally determined. The present study is a part of a larger integrated experimental and thermodynamic modelling research program in the systems relevant to high-temperature copper processing. INTRODUCTION In the high temperature processing of copper, minor elements are distributed between different phases, i.e. liquid slag, liquid matte, and liquid metal. From a processing perspective, it is desired to have the valuable minor elements distribute predominantly in the metal and matte phases rather than in the slag phase, and to have the non-valuable minor elements distribute predominantly in the slag phase rather than in the metal and matte phases. Knowledge of the distributions of minor elements between phases in the smelting, converting, and refining processes is required if the distributions of minor elements between phases in these processes are to be optimized.

In conjunction with the over-all goals of energy conservation at Inco Metals Company, a program of improvement in compressed air utilization was established. Air flows were monitored and compared to calculated requirements to establish efficiency by area. With the cooperation of area management, measures were implemented to reduce nonproductive usage. At the operation, annual savings in power consumption alone were 80,000 dollars. The program is being extended to other mine areas within the Division.

"Plastic Filled Valley (PFV) wire rope represents a significant development over the design of conventional wire rope. A sealing thermoplastic is impregnated under controlled conditions of temperature and pressure into a conventional lubricated wire rope to produce a lattice of plastic which surrounds and separates the strands from each other and from the core. Metal-to-metal contact is thereby alleviated and the lubricant is sealed in. The wear resistance, rope breaking load, fatigue resistance and crushing resistance are all increased. The result is a rope which offers exceptional service life.Laboratory tests carried out in Canada and at the University of Stuttgart, in West Germany, confirm the increase in fatigue life. The field trials conducted so far have indicated that the results obtained in the laboratory can be duplicated in the field.IntroductionIn times of double -digit inflation, the consideration given to operating costs throughout industry commands considerable attention. The same can be said of the mining industry. A set of large-diameter wire ropes used on the huge draglines in strip mining can cost in excess of $100,000. Because a machine may use three sets of rope s each year, it is clear that the costs of wire rope can contribute a considerable percentage to any operating budget. As wire rope is a product which is used extensively throughout the mining industry, it would appear timely to turn our attention to any ""Method of Extending Wire Rope Service Life"" in order that wire rope life can be optimized and wire rope costs can be minimized."

Several grindability tests were developed over the years to design grinding circuits or optimize existing operations. Each test has its own strengths and weaknesses and it is imperative to select the proper test procedure(s) to meet project deliverables and minimize the risk of a project. Pilot plant testing of large bulk samples historically constituted the traditional approach for AG or SAG design, but was gradually replaced by small-scale tests. Nowadays, conducting grindability tests requiring only a few kilos of material on several samples is a more typical approach to grinding mill design. This paper summarises the requirements and deliverables of various bench-scale test procedures, their strengths and weaknesses, and cases where AG/SAG pilot testing should still be performed.

Three types of gold species were observed for gold-zeolites, prepared by reduction of ionexchanged Au species in a series of zeolites: (i) Au3+cations, (ii) neutral Au0 n or charged Aus+ n clusters suggested to be inside the zeolite channels, (iii) Au nanoparticles with diameter varied from 2 through 20 nm located on the external surface of zeolite microcrystals. Contribution of the gold species formed in zeolite after the ion exchange was found to depend on zeolite type, acidity of zeolite, temperature of reduction and time of storage of the exchanged and reduced Au-containing zeolites. Au3+ ionic species and clusters Aun were formed after the ion-exchange procedure (in contrast with the familiar production of Agn in same zeolites). Gold nanoparticles were observed only as the result of reduction of the Au-exchanged forms at elevated temperatures due to reduction of Au3+ species and aggregation of clusters.
