Present authors have succeeded in single pass large draught rolling of AZ31 and ZK60A magnesium alloy sheets below 200 °C without heating rolls by raising rolling speed above 1000 m/min. Heavy reduction larger than 60% can be applied by single pass high speed rolling even at room temperature. The rolled sheets showed fine recrystallized microstructure by dynamic recrystallization. The improvement of workability at lower rolling temperature is due to temperature rise by plastic working. In high speed rolling, almost all of the work done by plastic deformation is converted into the heat that raises the temperature of the sheet during rolling because the heat did not flow out of the sheet by conduction and radiation within very short time.

"For the last three years (1967-9) the value of the output of mineral resources in the Province of Ontario exceeded one billion dollars per year. To produce this great wealth, it was necessary for the mining industry in Ontario to dispose of an estimated 80 million tons of waste mill tailings. Some of these tailings were returned underground but the greater proportion was disposed of above ground in lakes, watercourses, marshy areas and in engineered impoundment basins. This volume of tailings, if accumulated in one location would cover an area of 1000 acres to a height of almost thirty feet. The provision of proper disposal of the waste mill tailings in a manner such that they will not create problems in the environment is one of the costs which must be borne from the extraction of such a wealth from our mineral resources. It is principally the potential water pollution which may occur as a result of the indiscriminate discharges of waste mill tailings which is of concern to the Ontario Water Resources Commission.ONTARIO WATER RESOURCES COMMISSIONThe Ontario Water Resources Commission was formed in 1956 and operates under the Ontario Water Resources Commission Act. In the planning stage of a tunnel, due to limited available technology in the geological survey and the financial restriction, tunnel supports are often designed from unsatisfactory information, and the tunnel construction is started. Therefore, "observational construction" is carried out in the construction stage, in which the design is rationally verified and modified by observations/measurements. Moreover, the ground conditions ahead of a tunnel face must be predicted for efficient and safe tunnel construction. The authors have examined effective prediction methods to the ground conditions ahead of a tunnel face under construction of a mountain tunnel (Aoki et al., 2010) in view of the established method (Schubert et al., 1995). Though the prediction method of Schubert et al. requires the displacement in the direction of tunnel axis, it is difficult to obtain its accurate data by the electro-optical distance meter. Then, we have proposed a method that uses tilt sensors installed at the tunnel crown near the face to obtain the slight tilting information. To measure inclination of the tunnel crown, this inclinometer was originally developed as a daily management measurement, such that the geological condition and its possible change behind the face could be detected early, and a steady advance and construction safety could be ensured. This paper describes the method of forward prediction mechanism and advantages of this proposed method. It then presents the typical results of a field demonstration test at a tunnel under construction. Lastly, the predictable range from the stratum boundary at which ground stiffness changes are discussed based on the results of three-dimensional numerical analysis.

"Several mineralogical investigations have revealed the composition of modified kimberlites and the mud generated during treatment of diamonds, which contains up to 50% clay minerals (e.g., talc, talcsaponite, chlorite-saponite, Na-saponite) and X-ray amorphous phase. We investigated the composition of the natural diamond surface in relation to the diagnosed minerals and established the sequence and conditions for mineral formation on the crystal surface under kimberlite processing conditions. This article suggests a method to destroy and further dissolve minerals on the crystal surfaces using water system electrolysis products, which makes it possible to restore the diamond hydrophobic properties. The application of chemically treated water in the foam separation cycle under the conditions of high recovery of diamonds made it possible to increase the content of the factory concentrate by 8.0%.INTRODUCTIONThe high content of the modified minerals in the kimberlite ore results in the formation of hydrophilic slicks on the surface of the crystals which decreases the diamond’s hydrophobic properties and increases the losses thereof in the process of grease and foam separation to 20-30% (Kurenkov, 1957; Chanturiya et al., 1998, 1999, 2005; Duikarev et al., 2000).The previous researches have revealed the fact that the prospective way of solving the problem of intensity of mineral impurities formation on the surface of the crystals and the increase of concentration parameters is reached due to application of physical and chemical stimulation techniques on the solid and liquid pulp (Stricland-Constable, 1971; “Improvement of the technology…”, 2006; Makarskii, Adodin & Tarasova, 2011; Chanturiya, Dvoychenkova & Trofimova, 2012). The selection of the production rate is one of the most crucial decisions to be made in the development of a mineral property. However, it is not uncommon for the production rate to be decided arbitrarily, before any technical evaluations begin, and it is often not reconsidered when better data becomes available. A number of methods are used in the mineral industry to select the production rate for a project. There is general agreement that the size of the ore reserve has a strong influence on this decision, but what other factors are involved? Is there a way to identify an optimum rate? This paper examines the factors that influence the selection of a production rate from the perspective of project economics. The NPV maximum value should be viewed as a “failure” point. The “two times capital” maximum is proposed as a lower limit. A practical check is suggested to confirm that a selected rate is in an optimum range. Production rate assumptions are much more likely to be reviewed for marginal projects, but they should also be reviewed for viable projects.

Introduction During the economic investigation of Pacific Great Eastern Railway subsidy lands, the P.G.E. Survey of Resources made a geological and mineral survey of a large part of the valley of the Peace river as included in the Province of British Columbia. The immediate valley of the Peace river was surveyed from the mountains to the Alberta boundary; the valley of the Pine river was surveyed throughout; and the Dominion block, 70 miles square and lying astride the Peace river, westward from the Alberta boundary, was very carefully surveyed. The writer was in general charge of the field work, and spent half the field season of 1929 and the field season of 1930 in the region . J. B. Bocock, however, did the major part of the work, spending two seasons, 1929 and 1930, in the area. General Conclusions The rock formations within the area discussed are all sedimentary and range in age from pre-Cambrian to recent. As might be expected, the minerals are in the main non-metallic, coal being by far the most important. Favourable conditions exist for natural gas occurrence, and suitable structures for petroleum concentration occur, although the high carbon ratio of the coals sheds considerable doubt upon the actual occurrence of oil in the area. Materials of minor interest are ochre, calcareous tufa, marl, limonite, gravel, and building stone.

ABSTRACT Cameco Corporation is revitalizing its Key Lake Operation uranium mill in northern Saskatchewan. The mill currently uses ammonia stripping in solvent extraction (SX) and ammonia yellowcake precipitation. As part of the revitalization, the company considered installing strong acid stripping in solvent extraction (used at its Rabbit Lake Operation), which would lead to using hydrogen peroxide for uranium precipitation. As part of the process evaluation, tests were carried out to study how the drying temperature in indirect fired dryers would affect the uranium peroxide yellowcake precipitate properties. This paper discusses the test work results, including the relationships between drying temperature and product reactivity with water, product colour, product grade, and energy input requirements.

LOCATION OF PROPERTY THE property of Caribou Gold Mines, Limited, is situated in the north-eastern part of Halifax county, seven miles south of the Canadian National railway line at Upper Musquodoboit. Approach to the village is by a secondary road, improved recently by waste rock from the mine dump. A two-wire telephone line, seven miles long, built and owned by the present operators, provides communication to the nearest telephone exchange, Parker's Corner. HISTORY In 1870, the Caribou area was recognized as a proclaimed gold district. From then on, operations were intermittent, with periods of considerable activity by small companies until there were no fewer than seven mines in a district two miles long by three-quarters of a mile wide. These were the Holman, Truro, Caffrey, MacDonald or Elk, Lake, Dixon, and Hilchey properties, all of which have had separate stamp-mills, and have produced gold for varying periods. Depths of the workings range from 100 feet to 1,000 feet. Power was generated at each property by means of steam boilers. At the present time, the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, Limited, controls all the leased areas, approximately 800 acres, and is operating by means of one central vertical shaft. GEOLOGY The district in and about Caribou Mines has an elevation of approximately five hundred feet above sea level. The area is fairly well wooded, with rock outcrops here and there. These outcrops, along with information from test-pits and shafts, have been the basis for the very excellent geological map of the district prepared by E. R. Faribault some years ago. The rock structure, which is one of the best examples in Nova Scotia of an elliptical dome, has its anticlinal axis in a northeast-southwest direction, and flat plunges in the same directions.

The novel attachment timer apparatus presented in this paper serves as a diagnostic tool that allows the detection of changes in bubble-particle attachment probability and therefore floatability caused by alterations in the chemical environment and particle properties. The apparatus consists of six identical capillaries where bubbles with defined size are produced simultaneously in a measurement chamber. The bubbles at the capillary tips are placed in contact with the submerged particle bed for specific time periods, controlled with the help of automatic actuators. The advantage of the instrument is that hundreds of bubble-particle contacts can be measured automatically within a short time period. Microscopic pictures of each measured bubble are taken while recording the movement of the bubble before, during and after contact with the solid particles. The recorded pictures can be used to determine the actual bubble size and its corresponding deviation, and to detect the attachment of particles. The attached particles are collected in a detachable chamber for subsequent characterization. Furthermore, the device is portable and can be taken to the mineral processing plants for quick evaluation of particle-bubble attachment efficiency with particles and process water sampled directly from real processes.

Natural hazards such as rock bumps, methane, coal dust explosions, airborne respirable dust, outbursts of gas and rocks, water, radiation caused by natural radioactive materials, spontaneous fires, and climatic hazards, occurring in the Polish hard coal mines, should be controlled. These hazards are characterized by different scale levels numbered from 2?5. To recognize the amount and levels of hazards, research works were carried out in 109 mining districts of mines belonging to Jastrzebska Spólka Weglowa, Katowicki Holding Weglowy and Kompania Weglowa. These are 86 % of all mines and could be regarded as representative of the majority of Polish mining. The hazards have been classified as regards the frequency of their occurrence as: commonly occurring ? with a frequency of 100 % (like airborne respirable dust and fire hazards), high occurrence frequency ? frequency from 60 to below 100 % (methane hazard ? 83.5 %, coal dust explosion hazard ? 92.0 %, and water hazard ? 99.1 %), medium occurrence frequency ? from 30 to below 60 % (rock-bump hazard ? 52.3 % and climatic hazards ? 51.4 %), and episodic occurrence frequency ? below 30 % (outburst of gas and rocks and radioactive hazards). The dynamics of effects of growth in hazard levels to their intolerable values is diverse. Some of them are passive in nature, which allows for longer observation of changes and appropriate early response (as for climatic and spontaneous fire hazards). However the majority of them take on the character of disasters, like methane or coal dust explosions and damage of the excavation structure ? as occurs after a rock-bump or rock outburst; and creation of an atmosphere unfit for breathing ? during open or spontaneous fires, or after gas outbursts containing methane. There are also latent hazards whose effects do not influence indeed a process of production; however they are detrimental to health when a worker is exposed for a long time to airborne respirable dust and radiation. For other types of hazards a level of danger may be only estimated. Since the systems monitoring allows a wider range of control, therefore, aside from rock-bump and methane hazards, there are monitored also fire hazards including measurements of other air parameters (velocity, pressure, humidity, temperature, O2, CO2 concentration). A few types of monitoring systems are used in Polish mines, like the monitoring systems for environmental parameters such as SMP-NT, SMP-NT/A, the telemetric systems CST-40, CST/A, including the computer-aided system for methanometry control officer SWµP, the computer-aided measuring systems KSP-1, KSP-2, KSP-2C, or the production and safety control system VENTURON. The underground part of the systems monitoring of natural hazards contains measuring devices and equipment for automatic control (power-off) of machines and electric devices in case of increased methane hazard. The surface part of the monitoring system allows the measuring data to be visualized and pre-alarm (warning) and alarm states to be displayed. Furthermore it makes it possible to archive and report the data and to control the underground supply and signalling devices. The EMAG Institute developed monitoring methods to extend a measuring range of monitored parameters (such as methane and fire hazards) as well as to monitor so far unmonitored hazards like dust hazards (by continuous monitoring of dust levels in mine air) and climatic hazards (by online monitoring climatic parameters of mine air).

"THE OTTAWA BRANCH, CIM, each year holds a symposium on a subject of topical interest. The symposium this year was on Canada's Offshore Mineral Resources, at which papers were presented by: Dr. Donald G. Crosby, chief, Resource Administration Di-vision, Department of Energy, Mines and Resources, Ottawa; John A. Beesley, head, Legal Division, Department of External Affairs, Ottawa; and David W. Smith, man-ager, offshore exploration and production, Shell Canada Limited, Calgary. Because of the interest which this topic holds for our members, and because of the wealth and significance of information presented, the three papers -representing the first comprehensive review of our offshore resources -are reproduced herewith. The opening remarks of the Chairman, Dr. F. K. North, Professor of Geology, Carleton University, are also recorded, together with a few of the questions asked by the large attending audience. The symposium was held February 13th, and was organized by Dr. W. M. Tupper, chairman of the Branch Program Commit-tee. Differences in the extent of the continental shelf will be noted in the papers. These differences are related to slightly different definitions of the continental shelf by the authors."

"L’étude présentée ici vise à étudier l’influence, lors de stimulation hydraulique de puits dans les réservoirs géothermiques de type Enhanced Geothermal System (EGS), du comportement mécanique des zones de failles recoupant le puits sur la réponse hydraulique du réseau de fractures 3D. Dans ce but, un modèle 3D, basé sur la méthode des éléments distincts et dans lequel les zones de failles recoupant le puits sont modélisées par des fractures numériques 2D, est mis en oeuvre. Les modélisations présentées ici visent à caractériser l’influence du comportement mécanique (type de comportement, hétérogénéité) sur la cinétique de la stimulation hydraulique, ainsi que sur son effet spatial autour du puits. INTRODUCTIONPour le développement de l’exploitation géothermique de type Enhanced Geothermal System (EGS), la phase de stimulation conditionne grandement le succés du projet ; en effet, elle a pour objectif d’augmenter l’injectivité et la productivité des puits et doit permettre d’assurer la connexion entre les puits d’injection et de production garantissant ainsi la viabilité technique et économique de l’échangeur. Pour le site EGS de Soultz-sous-Forêts (France), parmi différentes techniques de stimulation, la stimulation hydraulique a été utilisée à cette fin en provoquant une augmentation irréversible de la perméabilité autour des puits. Dans ce type de réservoirs fracturés, le but des stimulations hydrauliques est de réactiver, plus spécifiquement en cisaillement, des structures hydrauliques pré-existantes (fractures, zones de failles etc.) dans le socle cristallin. La compréhension des phénomènes physiques durant la stimulation hydraulique est cruciale pour optimiser cette technologie et pour contrôler/limiter les risques associés (viabilité technique et économique des puits, sismicité induite etc.). C’est notamment le cas pour la relation entre le comportement mécanique des structures stimulées et les conséquences sur le comportement hydraulique dans un contexte tectonique spécifique."

Field tests at a number of large mineral processing operations have been undertaken to better understand the wear life impact of different aspects of pump design, materials of construction and maintenance procedures. Data are presented for wear rates, and typical result variability is explored. To improve the availability of pumping equipment in a milling circuit it is not only important to improve the wear life, but also reduce the variability in the wear life of components so that the incidence of premature failure is lessened. Localised gouging wear due to flow separation and turbulent eddy formation is often the point at which part-holing occurs. A number of improvements to the design of pump impeller and throatbush (suction side liners) to reduce the localised gouging wear are outlined. Also, results are presented on the use of composite materials (mix of metal, rubber and ceramic) for throatbush materials to protect specific areas against wear.

However, competition from other methods of fabrication is quite keen, constantly forcing the steel casting industry to the production of better quality castings at lower costs. New methods and materials have been put to use in the last ten years by foundries everywhere. This paper, in the form of a progress report, deals with new methods, processes and materials used by Canadian steel foundries for regular production, as well as with developments still in the initial but promising stages. T HE casting of steel to shape is the most direct method of producing steel parts in their final form. It is a basically economical process both as to cost and production time; it is also a process that offers design engineers the greatest flexibility and highest metallurgical versatility. Strategically located within the Uravan Mineral Belt District of western Colorado, the Piñon Ridge Project is the first new uranium mill being proposed for construction in the United States in over 25 years. In 1992, dramatic changes to the US regulatory environment for uranium ore processing occurred making regulatory compliance an increased challenge for a new facility. Proposed as a 6.3 million tonne uranium milling operation, the mill will receive ore from a number of mines in the region. The project includes design and permitting of a uranium/vanadium processing facility, tailings cells, evaporation ponds, and ore stockpile pads. The focus of this paper is to provide an overview of the US regulations and how these regulations were applied to design of the mill facilities, as well as provide a status update on the project as the mill license application was submitted to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) in November 2009.

"Over the last few decades, the emphasis on affordability and reduced cost of ownership has necessitated the development of innovative processes to carry out repairs in aero engine components. Conventional weld and braze repairs have evolved into advanced, sophisticated processes using state of the art knowledge in lasers, robotics and materials technology. This paper illustrates past and present scenarios in an attempt to illustrate progress that has been made in this area. The problems encountered in the past have been detailed along with the solutions that have been developed and commercially implemented to address these issues. Apart from technical progress, this presentation also addresses the progress made in business approaches and in Certification/Regulatory issues surrounding aero engine repair. Progress in Technology Repair technologies have also been the embryo from which new and revolutionary manufacturing technologies have evolved as well. Electron Beam Free Forming and LENS are examples of how a completely new manufacturing concept can evolve what was originally only a process to join metals. The current and future potential of these spin offs is discussed providing examples of application. While several problems have been solved over time with the implementation of advanced repair technologies, the demands of the industry have created new challenges. The paper describes these issues, outlines potential solutions and discusses the future of repair technologies in terms of the far reaching influence it is sure to have in design, manufacturing, maintenance management and life extension. Progress in Business Trends.Business approaches to repair and maintenance have also gone through considerable change with the introduction of ""Power by the Hour"" and other similar arrangements between the companies responsible for engine overhaul and the end-users. Program Based Logistics (PBL) is yet another innovation to provide a win-win situation for the repair service provider and the end user. This paper traces the development of these business initiatives and highlights successful applications. Progress in Repair Certification, Regulatory Issues.Understanding of the issues surrounding certification of repairs has also evolved with time and regulatory issues have been clarified considerably. Procedures for analysis and testing are much clearer and ""Check Lists"" are being drafted for certifying repairs on various engine components. The PMA phenomenon has added yet another dimension to the issues regarding certification and these are discussed as well."

IN 1932, Horace Onyett at Oroville, California, built a practical floating washing plant along the general lines as now known, using a 24 in. by 12 ft. trammel; it was fed with a ½ yard dragline bucket, rated then at 200 yards per day. Onyett dubbed his plant a &apos;Doodlebug&apos; which name has clung to this type of operation ever since. In general, the &apos;Doodlebug&apos; dredge is the outgrowth of the depression of 1929, wherein many dirt contractors had surplus idle equipment and a few of them ventured to use it for placer mining. Many such plants were impractical and poorly designed and adapted often to locations not suited to the purpose. However out of the general idea came refinements until today dragline dredging has a very definite place in the gold production of the world. Many of the early operators, being mainly contractors without mining experience or technical knowledge of gold saving, geology, or mechanical design, naturally went through stages of trial and error until a workable unit became standard practice. Credit should be given Bodenson Iron Works of San Francisco, who did a notable job of pioneering and building of floating washing plants; also, to Lord and Bishop, contractors of Sacramento, who were among the early operators, and to several others who built and rebuilt their plants until the weak spots were strengthened to take the beating required, and yet deliver a high degree of efficiency.
