As part of the Goldcorp Inc growth plan Minera Peñasquito SA de CV has developed its polymetallic deposit with a large ?state of the art? concentrator to process lead and zinc ores. The plant consists of two grinding lines including 38ft diameter SAG mills and 24ft diameter ball mills. During mid to late 2009 concentrator commissioning activities commenced. First concentrates were produced in October 2009 and now the plant is meeting its design basis of 65,000 mtpd per line. This paper describes the design and operational experience to date for its grinding circuit design, together with the recently commissioned HPGR crushing circuit.

"This study focuses on comparing the “blinding” effectiveness of various organic additives as part of a general review of using organic additives to mitigate preg-robbing and improve gold recovery during cyanide leaching of carbonaceous gold ores. The laboratory results compared the impact of various organic additives on the prevention of gold adsorption using both activated carbon and ore samples containing carbonaceous matter, generally referred to as total carbonaceous matter (TCM). Although several organic reagents were found to have a significant blinding effect on activated carbon, these results did not translate into increased gold leaching efficiencies with actual ore samples.INTRODUCTION Preg-robbing refractory ores, which contain carbonaceous matter, have been problematic in cyanide plants for many years. In industry, preg-robbing by carbonaceous matter may be mitigated using various techniques including flotation, to remove the carbonaceous matter; addition of blinding agents, to passivate the carbon surface and prevent adsorption of gold cyanide complex; roasting, to partially or fully destroy the carbonaceous matter; chemical oxidation (Abotsi & Osseo-Asare, 1986); pressure oxidation; or microbial deactivation (Dunne, Staunton, & Afewu, 2013). Carbon-in-Leach and Resin-in-Leach are also used as process alternatives in which activated carbon or resins are used to compete with the carbonaceous matter for gold cyanide adsorption. For highly preg-robbing ores, thiosulphate leaching may be considered as an alternative to conventional cyanide chemistry (Baláz, et al., 2000). Natural carbonaceous matter is composed mainly of hydrocarbons, organic acids, and graphitic/amorphous elemental carbon. Natural elemental carbon that behaves as activated carbon is considered to be the main reason for preg-robbing, although the true nature of this phenomenon is not fully understood (Tan, Feng, Lukey, & van Deventer, 2005). In general, the hydrocarbon fraction is assumed to have negligible interaction with gold, while organic acids, such as humic acids, may form complexes with gold, inhibiting its extraction in cyanide solutions. Organic reagents have been used for blinding carbonaceous matter in gold ores prior to cyanidation. Abotsi & Osseo-Asare (1987) tested various organic compounds, with two possible effects in mind. First, the organic compounds were expected to adsorb onto the surface of the solids as anionic/cationic species; the resulting electrostatic interactions between the Au(CN)2- anion and the negatively/positively charged surface would inhibit/enhance the gold uptake. Second, the organic reagents were expected to coat the surface of the carbonaceous component in the ore, limiting the available adsorption sites and reducing gold losses. The methods of harvesting copper from stainless steel mother plates has been investigated from fundamental and operational experience perspectives. At least five different harvesting techniques have been identified that have different effects on product quality, current efficiency, current distribution, growth morphology and ease of stripping. Each method is examined from fundamental principles to understand what occurs during the harvesting process and why the particular effects are manifested. Experience from plants operating the harvesting method is provided to show that the fundamental understanding is relevant. Best practice harvesting method and harvesting management are described.

Process performance can be significantly influenced by proper design of hydrometallurgical reactors. Optimal reactor configuration is case specific and depends on process requirements such as reaction rate limiting factor and particle size distribution. Choice of materials and manufacturing methods also play important roles in highly corrosive and abrasive environment often involved in hydrometallurgical industry. In this paper performance of different reactor designs has been compared in some typical hydrometallurgical applications. Results show that significant improvement in energy consumption, gas utilization efficiency and equipment lifetime can be achieved with process specific reactor design.

ABSTRACT; Agnico-Eagle’s LaRonde mine is one of the deepest mines in Canada. Ground conditions in the deeper levels can be very challenging, ranging from hard and brittle to soft and squeezing. As a result, rock mechanics and ground control practices have had to evolve considerably to accommodate progressively deeper mining activities. This paper focuses on the deeper levels of mines and how the difficult ground conditions encountered there have influenced the mining strategy. The first section examines ground control practices and support systems in highly stressed, poor quality rock. The evolution of level layout is also presented. Finally, improvements in stope sequencing are reviewed.

"The zone of economic interest at H.J. Joel Gold Mine is the VS5/Beatrix Composite Reef, a quartz-pebble conglomerate of Archean age. The reef occurs at the base of the Eldorado Formation, Central Rand Group, of the Witwatersrand Supergroup. At least three stratigraphically distinct conglomerates form this economic zone. In order of deposition these are the Footwall, Beatrix, and the VS5/Beatrix reefs. The Footwall and Beatrix reefs are equated with the Aandenk Formation with transport directions toward the northwest, whereas the VS5lBeatrix Reef is of Eldorado age, with transport directions toward the south. The change in the drainage direction was caused by a major basin-wide tectonic event that occurred prior to the deposition of the Eldorado Formation. The Beatrix Reef was formed in a proximal, braided, fluvial environment by a process of aggrading gravel bars between channelways. The VS5/Beatrix Reef was formed by the desegregation of pre-existing Beatrix Reef with the introduction of new material containing much shale detritus and is seen to have been deposited in a more -distal, braided, fluvial environment, similar to the Beatrix Reef.The average gold concentrations are different for each conglomerate; the Beatrix at 32.1 ppm Au, the Footwall at 24.4 ppm Au, and the VS5/Beatrix at only 12.4 ppm Au. A sedimentary gold concentrating process related to higher energy braid channels was primarily responsible for these high gold grades. Not only the basal unconformity surface, but also, internal degredation surfaces, were prime sites for concentration. An understanding of the spatial distribution of these differing conglomerates and their braid channels forming the economic reef zone is necessary in predicting ore grades for future mining."

"IntroductionDURING the past quarter of a century diamond drilling, in all its phases, has increased in Canada to a very impressive total of more than 10,000,000 feet annually. Since the art of diamond drilling became recognized, some seventy-five years ago, there has been considerable improvement in both equipment and technique. The steam-powered drill rig and the hand-set diamond bit are things of the past.The purpose of this paper is to review some drilling trends •and practices over the past few years. In the preparation of the paper, the author wishes to acknowledge kind assistance of Mr. J. D. Cumming, Dr. C. H. Hitchcock, Mr. Robert H. Quintal, and many others, including staff members of the Longyear organization.Figures provided by the Dominion Bureau of Statistics for the year 1954 show that Canadian production of metallic and non-metallic minerals and structural materials had a value of $1,454.2 million, excluding radioactive products for which figures are not available. Approximately 61 per cent of this valuation comprised production of nickel, copper, gold, coal, asbestos, zinc, lead, and iron. It is certain that diamond drilling played a major role in the discovery and development of the orebodies from which these minerals were obtained.After the surface examination of an ore deposit, diamond drilling will automatically follow, in order to determine structure, grade, and tonnage.Footage drilled by mining companies and contractors on mineral exploration and blast-hole work since 1945, as reported by the Do-minion Bureau of Statistics, is shown in Figure 1."

Many factors affect the forge ability of steels. One of the major factors is chemical composition.' This article discusses the individual effects of alloying elements and the effect of the resultant modification of microstructure onforgeability. INTRODUCTION T HE use of alloy steels is expanding considerably and the fabrication procedures for such alloys are becoming more complex. An attempt is made in this article to describe the effect of alloying elements on the hot-workability of steels. Most of the data reported here are taken from the studies of Ihrig, Clark and others (Refs. 1-4). Chemical composition is not the only controlling factor. Grain size and surface condition of the material, forging temperature, and speed of deformation are also important. Certain conclusions can be drawn regarding the effect of various alloying elements on the hot-work-ability of forging stock. The results of hot-twist tests are considered useful in this connection as the number of twists to failure has been taken as the level of forgeability at a particular temperature. "This article addresses the relationship between mine evaluation, the tax system, and economic risk. It is based on a paper presented by the author at recent seminars in Moscow and Tashkent on the subject of mine evaluation.IntroductionTaxation can have a strong influence on the feasibility of a mining project. For the most part, because metal prices are determined on a global basis, the mining concern is not able to pass on to its customers any portion of taxes which the concern has to pay. Taxes are a direct charge against the project. The purpose of the article is to highlight the various ways whereby different taxes can affect the financial viability of a mining operation.The first part of the paper identifies different forms of taxation, and the second part of the paper addresses the different forms of taxation in terms of risk analysis and impacts on the mining project. "The history and analysis of a structurally complex open-pit rock slope displacement are described. The failure involved part of the only haulage access to a major ore zone. The ongoing movement was monitored using an electronic distance measuring device and a continuous electronic system specifically designed for the problem. A major fault, infilled with a thick clay gouge, and intersected by other structural features, resulted in the transfer of weight to a rock mass acting as a buttress in the lower regions. Movements were affected by blasting vibrations and ground-water conditions. Remedial measures included limiting blasting levels and lowering the water table, following which mining was successfully resumed in the area.IntroductionBrenda Mines is situated in a mountainous region of the southern interior of British Columbia; the location is indicated on Figure 1 . The elevation is approximately 5000 ft , giving a climate typical of more northern areas. Temperatures vary from -30°C to + 30°C. A snowfall level of 400-800 cm is experienced from November to April. During the spring, a heavy runoff period occurs, increasing the pumping rate in the pit from a nominal 50* gal/min to 2000 gal/min.The orebody occurs in a fractured Jurassic rock mass referred to as the Brenda Stock; it is approximately 3000 ft in diameter and 1000 ft deep. The Brenda Stock was intruded into the Upper Triassic Nicola Group tuffs, breccias and argillites. Mineralization occurred in several stages in a relatively homogeneous quartz diorite host rock. Shearing, faulting and jointing occured later in many stages, producing mineralized clay gouge zones up to several feet in thickness'> , These gouge zones have a major effect on the stability of the pit walls.The structural geology of the pit walls is otherwise relatively simple. Figure 2 is a conventional pole diagram indicating the orientation of the rock structural systems which are present. The major system has an average dip of approximately 70 degrees to the south and strikes approximately east /west , it is not undercu t by the pit slope. Figure 3 is a photograph of part of the North wall on which this system is indicated.The basic pit design consists of a working bench height of 50 ft, with a final wall height of 100 ft between berm s and a 100-ft-wide berm every second lift. Combined with a local face slope of 50-70 degrees, the resulting wall slope, not including haulage roads, is 45 degrees. Figures 4 and 5 are generalized plans and sectional views of the pit."

"Rock failure process is generally recorded or measured using conventional sensors like strain gauges, seismic, micro-seismic, acoustic, electromagnetic and other techniques. The above sensors are either to be pasted on the surface of the rock sample or placed very near to it to capture the response of the sample with the increment of load. This requires precise tools to cut or polish the locations where sensors are to be placed. Moreover, deformation or acoustic or micro-seismic activities are recorded only at the locations where sensors are pasted.Recent development in Digital Image Correlation (DIC) technique has shown promise to measure deformation / strain at every location of the surface of a sample. In DIC, two images (reference and deformed) are taken within a small time interval of the same object are compared to estimate the change in reflectance as a function of displacement, velocity or rate of strain at each pixel while the object is undergoing through a loading process. In this study, extended digital image correlation (X-DIC) technique has been implemented using 4-noded quadrilateral elements with a discontinuity surface in the deformed image. The continuous and enriched displacements are estimated at each node.The X-DIC method is verified using numerically generated images. The study has been further extended to evaluate the performance of X-DIC method on deformation analysis of experimental samples under uni-axial loading condition. The results of this study show that X-DIC method is an effective tool for determination of displacements of the entire surface of a rock sample having a discrete crack or discontinuity in a non-contact manner. This method demonstrates the applicability to investigate rock failure mechanism for the entire sample in a laboratory set up as well as monitoring of pillar failure mechanism in underground mines."

"Shale gas has become an important unconventional oil and gas resources. Its effective development relies on comprehensive and accurate understanding of shale gas reservoirs. Rock mechanical properties is one of the important components of reservoir evaluation. Two adjacent black shale samples, which are cored from the depth of 1145 meters in Chongqing, southwest China, are subjected to acoustic emission(AE) test under uniaxial stress and compared with coarse grained granite. The results of synchronous AE, stress-strain and ultrasonic velocity experiments show that shale has weak anisotropy. Compared with granite sample, two shale samples are similar, but their strength, velocity and brittleness are quite different, indicating that shale has strong microscopic heterogeneity. TOC, XRD, SEM microstructure analysis show that total organic content, mineral composition and natural fractures are the main impacting factors for mechanical heterogeneity. INTRODUCTIONShale gas is a typical low-grade marginal resource, which is characterized by ultra-low matrix permeability and small single well control volume. In order to enable commerical development, complex hydraulic-fracture networks must be created in the shale to allow gas to escape from the micro/nano-pores and natural fractures where it is trapped in the rock (C. Clark et al.,2013; Ge et al., 2013). The development of shale gas requires accurate evaluation methodologies to evaluate shale reservoir properties and predict production. (Jarvie et al., 2007). Rock mechanical properties are an important part of the reservoir evaluation. It is significant for efficient drilling, completion and hydraulic fracturing to understand mechanical behavior of shale gas play (John, 2011; Wei, 2013).Rock mechanical properties mainly include heterogeneity, anisotropy, brittleness and acoustic emission activity (Lockner et al., 1992; Jerome et al., 2009; He et al., 2010; Liang et al., 2012). Shale mechanical properties are evaluated from laboratory tests following a complex workflow that covers tasks from sampling to testing (Md. Aminul Islam et al., 2013). It is common to include various experimental methods such as stress-strain curves, ultrasonic velocity and acoustic emission when evaluating the mechanical properties (Rao et al., 2006). Because of the presence of organic-rich matter, mineral composition orientation and natural fractures, shale tends to have strong anisotropy and heterogeneity (Deng et al., 2004; Wang et al., 2013; Hathon et al., 2013)."

Dynamics of collision and kinetics of the bubble attachment to hydrophobic solid plates (Teflon) of different surface roughness were investigated. The experiments were carried out in such a way that probability of the collision and probability that the detachment will not occur were equal always 100%. Thus, it was possible to determine effect of the surface roughness on the bubble attachment (three phase contact formation, TPC) only. A high-speed camera (1182 Hz) was used to record the velocity variations, bouncing and time of attachment of the bubble colliding with Teflon plates having different surface roughness (5 different plates). Roughness of the plate surfaces was modified in a mechanical way using different abrasive papers. It was found that the roughness had a crucial influence on the time-scale of the TPC formation and attachment of the bubble colliding with the Teflon plates. Despite high hydrophobicity of all plates (contact angles 1100 -115º) it was observed that at the smoothest surfaces (called "Teflon I" and "Teflon II" and having surface roughness below 1 um) there was no attachment during the bubble first collisions. Prior to the attachment four or more "approach?bouncing" cycles of the colliding bubble were observed there and simultaneously the bubble shape varied rapidly within time intervals below 0.85 ms. Time of contact of the colliding bubble with the Teflon plates was very short; 2-3 ms. These results indicate that during that short time of the collision the liquid layer separating the colliding bubble and the solid surface did not reach a critical thickness of its rupture.

Although heap bioleaching has been recognized as an economic alternative for treating low grade mineral ores, the underlying physical, chemical and biological processes involved are complex. A detailed investigation into the dynamics of heap bioleaching processes has provided much insight into the underlying complexities, and has led to the development of a sophisticated modelling tool - HeapSim. This tool can be of great help in the design and operation of heap bioleaching processes. In this paper, the mathematical model implemented in HeapSim is examined. The model takes into account mineral kinetics, particle level effects, bacterial growth, oxidation and adsorption, gas absorption, pore diffusion, bulk advection, gas balance and heat conservation. Three case studies where the model has been applied are briefly discussed. Sedimentation behaviour of siliceous mill tailings derived from a magnetite-chalcopyrite ore in fresh water, fresh water - sea water mixtures and full-salinity sea waters are compared. Results of batch settling tests are presented in the form of settling curves and solids flux curves. The addition of a few per cent of sea water markedly enhanced the zone sedimentation rate due to particle agglomeration caused by a reduction in zeta potential of the suspended solids. The presence of a small amount of residual, previously magnetized magnetite in the tailings also enhanced agglomeration and sedimentation. The significance of these results to submarine disposal of mill tailings is discussed.

"The nature and basic kinetics of the hydrothermal reactions of bornite, covellite pyrite and enargite with copper sulfate solutions were investigated, as a previous study on the behavior of the bulk Chilean copper concentrates. The reaction of bornite produced digenite at 160 °C and djurleite above this temperature. Covellite was transformed to digenite at < 200 °C and to chalcocite (Q and M) at > 200 °C. The pyrite reaction was significant at > 200 °C and extensive at 240 °C, enargite reacts only above 240°C and produces digenite. The hydrothermal treatment of Chilean Codelco-type copper concentrates with hydrothermal reactions was similar to those obtained from pure mineral samples.INTRODUCTIONStudies on the hydrothermal enrichment of chalcopyrite concentrates were begun by MacGauley and Roberts (1951), Roberts et al. (1953) and MacGauley and Schaufelberger (1956). In the 1970's these processes were reexamined by McKay et al. (1972), and Johnson and Coltrinari (1976), but it not was until the 1990s when the kinetics, mechanisms and full engineering aspects were studied by Barlett, (1992), Jang and Wadsworth, (1994) and Peterson and Wadsworth (1994). The main objectives were to solve some important problems in the copper pyrometallurgy: The increase of the smelting capacity, the reduction of the iron slag – and associated copper losses – as well as the reduction of sulfur emissions. The present rise in copper demand and price implies the production and subsequent treatment of very impure concentrates. Thus, a significant increase of environmental problems can be expected in the copper pyrometallurgy. The previous purification of concentrates can reduce the processing of wastes containing hazardous heavy metals in the copper refineries and the hydrothermal treatment can be an alternative which combines both enrichment and purification. On the other hand, Chuquicamatatype concentrates (Viñals et al., 2004a) contains digenite (Cu1.8S), pyrite (FeS2), chalcopyrite(CuFeS2), b ornite (Cu5FeS4), covellite (CuS) and sphalerite (ZnS) as the main mineral components, with minor amounts of enargite (Cu3AsS4), galena (PbS) and molybdenite (MoS2)."

L'amiante et Jes scories de titane destines a la production de pigments, qui comptent parmi Jes plus importantes substances minerales produites au Quebec, representent respectivement 370Jo et I 70Jo de la valeur totale des non-metalliques tandis que le groupe des materiaux de construction represente pres de 400Jo. Les autres substances, parmi lesquelles ressortent nettement la tourbe, la silice et la magnesite, representent une valeur totale de 61.5 millions $.

"A systematic survey of the appropriate literature in terms of phase equilibria and possible reactions involving deposits in Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) incinerators are analyzed particularly with respect to the theoretical first melting points of typical ashes and the possible presence of a liquid phase at the temperature of ash-metal interface. Conclusions are drawn on the basis of the possible presence or absence of various metal chlorides and sulphates in such situations, and their effects on the problems of fouling and metal corrosion. From preliminary results, it would appear that ZnCl2 is unlikely to be present in any molten phase which causes corrosion because it evaporates rapidly from such liquids. It would also appear that PbCl2 and, by inference, ZnCl2 will sulphate at relatively low temperatures if the flue gas contains SO2 and O2.IntroductionMunicipal Solid Waste (MSW) incinerators produce fly ash which deposits on heat transfer surfaces throughout the furnace, leading to corrosion and loss of energy recovery efficiency. Despite a massive amount of research carried out on the subject of corrosion in MSW incinerators, the problem of corrosion of heat transfer metal is still with us, and no definite over-all cause and effect relationship has yet been identified. In order to make a contribution to the eventual solution of this problem, the authors have examined the problem from the beginning, using their knowledge of fouling and corrosion problems in black liquor recovery boilers as a starting point.The incineration of MSW has been used for many years to reduce the volume of material sent to landfill (ash volume compared to raw waste volume), and, in most cases, to recover energy at the same time by raising steam The steam may be ""low- or high pressure/ temperature"" depending on its end use. The higher the steam pressure and temperature, the greater seem to be the problems with corrosion of heat exchanger metal, presumably because the metal must withstand higher surface temperatures.The chemical and physical composition of MSW is extremely variable, not only on a regional basis, seasonal basis, and day-today basis, but also on a minute-by-minute basis, due to the inhomogeneity of MSW. This makes it extremely difficult to define cause and effect relationships, because both cause and effect are transient in nature."

The development of trackless mining at Gaspe Copper Mines, Limited is described, showing the changes in mining method and the part played by the mobile equipment in the evolution of this highly mechanized underground operation. Comparisons of loading and hauling machines are given and an attempt is made to predict some possible future developments.INTRODUCTIONTHE PROPERTY OF GASPE COPPER MINES LIMITED is located in the Gaspe Peninsula of the Province of Quebec, 60 miles west of the village of Gaspe and 25 miles south of the St. Lawrence River. The original discovery of low-grade ore was made at Copper Mountain in 1921. Subsequent exploration revealed the richer Needle Mountain orebodies, and eventually in 1951 the decision was made by Noranda Mines to build the mining, concentrating and smelting complex (Figure 1). Construction and development of the mine was commenced in 1952 and production started in 1955."
