This paper briefly outlines the develop ment of the froth flotation plant at Coal Cliff Colliery. The plant was superimposed onto the original flow sheet in which fines were merely thickened and filtered. Test work leading up to the installation is described and the final layout is discussed. Details of the concentrate and tailings systems are given. Preliminary results of a further extension involving the use of a Davcra flotation machine are also given.

From an examination of the processes used in extractive metallurgy a hierarchy of process aims is identified, these aims are separation, compound formation,, metal production and metal purification. Following a summary of aerodynamic principles and the changes imposed by the process, areas important to the operator are then enumerated. These include furnace lines, cooling and casting technology, coke properties, gas distribution and others. Questions are raised on the implication of lowering the hearth substantially below the tuyeres and about the status of stack injection. The Agnew Nickel Mine has a short his-tory of mining activities. However it has experienced a large variety of ground support problems. These problems relate to geological, hydrological, geomechanical, structural and mining techniques. The majority of the prob-lems occur in other underground mines. How-ever the large serpentinite hosted ore body which contains over 80% of the ore has prob-lems rarely encountered in other mines. Sol-utions to the problems are only being gained by understanding the factors creating them.

An Ore Reserve Estimate aims to foreqast the impact of the complex mixture of factors which constitute a mining and milling operation. The factors are pulled together in the Mine Plan which then constrains the reserve estimate. At the Zinc Mine at Broken Hill the complexity of the ore lodes highlights some of the factors which affect the ore grade estimates and at Elura the different metallurgical characteristics of the ore types influences their economic viability.

Australians have always been great travellers but, traditionally Australian companies have been very conservative in contrast to more daring individual Australians. During the 1960s, '1970s and 1980s, the Australian companies spent much of their time exploring in Australia. It was only some of the major companies like CRA and BHP that had explored in places like Bougainville and Chile. However, during the mid-1980s some of the smaller companies started looking beyond their shore towards other opportunities in other countries. Why did they do this? Were they pushed or did they jump? The regulation of environmental management in the minerals and petroleum industries has been undergoing considerable change over the past decade. In recent years, there has been a distinct trend towards smaller government and increased environmental awareness. Current regulatory systems have generally neither responded to these trends nor effectively dealt with the demands placed on them. There is a need to develop a more effective means of providing assurance to Government and the community that its environmental objectives are being met. These means must also enable industry to have an effective environmental management process.
