Several important, fundamental aspects of the grinding behaviour of mineral systems are addressed. The Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm for systems of constrained non-linear equations was used to solve the steady-state and dynamic population balance model (PBM) grinding equations to obtain the mill matrices and grinding selection and breakage rate functions, respectively. The fact that the PBM model equation Inverse Problem is degenerate or underspecified is demonstrated. Multiple solutions to the same PBM equations are provided. It is shown that there is no unique solution to the Inverse Problem unless additional constraints are provided or assumptions are made such as the Arbiter-Bhrany normalisation assumption. The severity of the non-uniqueness problem for steady state grinding is demonstrated in several examples using typical feed distributions and mill matrices. In addition, it is also demonstrated that when higher than single powers are used in steady-state mill matrix expressions during simulation or calculation (or iterative procedures are used during numerical simulation) and four or more size intervals are used considerable amount of error is propagated throughout any calculation. Each solution to a PBM, while giving the same prediction during a single mill pass, gives different solutions or predictions for mill composition upon subsequent passes. In addition, it is shown that there is a problem with building up a grinding mill knowledge base with PBMs. A similar analysis was done for the dynamic or kinetic PBM equations. The fact that the dynamic PBM Problem is degenerate or underspecified is also demonstrated. Multiple solutions to the same dynamic PBM equations are provided. Again, it is shown that there is no unique solution to the Inverse Problem unless additional constraints are provided or assumptions are made such as the normalisation assumption. Each solution to a dynamic PBM, while giving the same prediction for a given grinding time interval, gives different solutions or predictions for mill composition for other grinding times. Actual experimental grinding data was assessed to determine the functionality of mill selection and breakage functions. The functionalities obtained through constraints were compared with those obtained with the normalisation assumption of Arbiter-Bhrany which relates breakage functions to particle size distribution. The capability of the population balance model to predict grinding behavior over time in various mineral grinding systems was assessed. The required functionality of selection and breakage functions for effective prediction of grinding behavior in mineral systems is discussed.

Mond gas-producer tar, and, in fact, all tars obtained from the retorting of coal where steam and air are admitted to the retort, are of entirely different chemical composition to the ordinary coal tar made in the gas or coke works. These tars contain none of, the aromatic hydrocarbons - benzene, toluene, naphthalene, and anthracene, sought after by the ordinary coal-tar refiner.The distillation of Mond tar shows it to consist of phenols of high molecular weight, unsaturated hydrocarbons of high gravity and low viscosity, paraffin wax, and resinous substances of whose composition little is known.The physical properties of Mond producer tar are also peculiar. It has a "short," granular texture when cold, which might be likened to candied honey. It "dries" (hardens) when exposed in thin layers to the air, and, for a coal tar, it cannot be considered sticky. This latterò property, combined with the short texture, prevents its being used successfully for road-making or macadamizing.The drying properties and the paraffin wax contained in: this tar cause it to hold up large percentages of water, probably in the form of emulsion. When containing as much as 10% to 15% moisture it appears to be quite dry.

Milling Practices Ore is direct tipped into a gyratory crusher and crushed to minus 209mm and fed to stockpiles for the blending of grade into the mills. Secondary and tertiary crushing reduces the mill feed to minus 12mm. Mill feed is a blend of breccia and porphyry ore into two primary mills with the overflow to a regrind mill and then into the leach tanks, followed by a conventional counter current carbon in leach circuit. Underflow from the cyclones feeds back into the primary mills for additional grind. An unusual feature of the Mt Leyshon milling circuit is a desire to produce scatts. The scatt by product is the polished base rock of the Mt Leyshon Breccia clast and contains little grade. These scatts are produced because of the additional time and energy required to produce a proportionally small quantity of gold. The residence of these scatts in the mills decreases the mill feed rate. Scatts account for twenty percent of the mill feed and are screened from the discharge of the primary mills.

Bivariate recoverable resource estimation aims at predicting the recovered metal for a secondary variable when a cut-off is applied to a primary variable. The choice of a consistent geostatistical model is advisable to allow a robust estimation from exploration data of the primary and secondary metal recovery functions on a generic selection block (selective mining unit û SMU) within large panels. Ore processing decisions at Lihir Gold LimitedÆs Lihir Gold Mine are based on the gold and sulfur estimates of SMUs from production (grade control) data. The predictive model from exploration data at Lihir is based on the estimation of a recoverable resource for gold by Uniform Conditioning (UC), with an estimate of the sulfur grade being provided by Ordinary Kriging of panels. While univariate UC is adapted to the diffusive nature of the gold mineralisation (Ladolam orebody) at Lihir, the independent estimation of sulfur, through ordinary kriging, fails to capture the potential spatial correlation that exists between gold and sulfur mineralisation. This paper presents a practical implementation of bivariate UC, which better represents in the resource model the spatial correlation between gold and sulfur. Incremental economic gains through improved definition of material categories and scheduling are investigated, and the particular impact on the process of geological interpretation and domaining is emphasised.

The Olympic Dam deposit is located some 600 km north of Adelaide in South Australia. It was discovered in 1975 by Western Mining Corporation and in 1979 a joint venture was formed with British Petroleum for the evaluation and development of the project. Studies were completed and construction started in 1986 with the plant being commissioned progressively between April and August of 1988. In 1993 Western Mining acquired BP's interest and are now owners of the whole deposit. The scale of the initial development was 1.5 Mtpa of ore for the production of 45 000 tpa of copper cathode, 900 tpa of uranium oxide and some gold and silver. Two expansion programs have occurred in 1992 and 1995 and current performance is at the rate of 3 Mtpa of ore for the production of 84 000 tpa of copper cathode, 1500 tpa of uranium oxide, 24 000 oz per year of confined gold and 380 000 oz per year of confined silver (Table 1). An aerial view of the plant is shown in Figure 1. The benefit of diversifying into the production of more than one product is undoubted and the flexibility of being able to produce variable quantities of copper and uranium also allows advantage to be taken of a change in market conditions.

The Manantial Espejo district (Argentina) hosts a low-sulfidation epithermal Ag (-Au) deposit with a proven and probable reserve of 38 Moz Ag and 0.55 Moz Au. The district lies along the southern rim of the Deseado Massif in the Middle to Late Jurassic Chon Aike Province, a large bimodal igneous province dominated by silicic volcanic rocks that were formed during the initial extension leading to the opening of the South Atlantic Ocean. The district stratigraphy consists of 162 to 161 Ma old rhyodacitic to rhyolitic volcaniclastic rocks of the Chon Aike and La Matilde Formations, followed by 160 to 157 Ma old andesites and dacites of the informally called intermediate formation. The main stage of normal faulting post-dates the volcanic activity and coincides with the formation of the precious metal veins that were dated by 40Ar/39Ar on hydrothermal adularia with ages between 152.8 ¦ 0.8 Ma and 156.6 ¦ 0.8 Ma. Economically important hydrothermal veins show characteristic features of a low-sulfidation epithermal deposit with crustiform and colloform banding, bladed calcite replaced by quartz and abundant adularia. In the Maria Vein, the major orebody of the district, six hydrothermal stages are identified, but only stages one and four contributed metal. Lead isotope ratios in hydrothermal sulfides show a close relationship to ratios in feldspars from the district Chon Aike Formation, suggesting a common source for the Pb and possibly the precious metals in both the magmatic and hydrothermal products, or that the Pb in the hydrothermal veins was derived from the volcanic rocks. One aim of testwork and flowsheet development is to ultimately provide a reliable and flexible plant that is simple to operate and maintain. Testwork can indicate amenability of ores to CIP treatment and provide a basis for process design and economic appraisal. Batch cyanidation and CIP tests are often sufficient for small projects. Continuous multistage test rigs can be operated to simulate plant operation and to provide data for flowsheet optimisation. Operating requirements, gold recoveries and potential problem areas can be anticipated at an early stage with more confidence. Subsequent project development involving decisions on the basic flowsheet, equipment types and general plant arrangements are based on practical considerations and experience. Computer aided process modeling and economic appraisal can be useful in analysing various tradeoffs, firming up the flowsheet and equipment sizes, and in specifying operating targets for the future CIP plant. INTRODUCTION Carbon-in-pulp (CIP) technology which has developed rapidly since 1974 is now accepted as an economically and technically viable process for the efficient recovery of gold. This paper describes testwork and flowsheet development procedures used for CIP evaluation and design.

The potential for extracting gravel materials from active floodplain and channel areas has been investigated for three West Coast rivers û the Grey, Inangahua and Whataroa. Studies have focused primarily on resource availability and replenishment, but there are clearly also environmental management issues associated with such a proposal. The potential uses for of extracted materials include roading and concrete aggregates, as well as railway ballast, whilst a major benefit would be in assisting with flood control and channel maintenance in a naturally aggrading system. Sediment movement in the rivers has been examined at three scales; long-term (>100 years), medium-term (10 - 100 years) and short-term (<10 years). Long-term sediment movement is based on geological and geomorphological information, such as cyclic fan development and down-cutting in the Whataroa River where sediment input appears to be largely controlled by Alpine Fault rupture events. Medium-term assessment relied on air-photo interpretations over a period of about 50 years, with the mapping of channel changes and bank migration. Short term changes were evaluated from gauging records and other hydrological data, and took account of the development of an armour layer in these gravel-bed river systems. It was concluded that sediment in the lower reaches of each river was suitable for most aggregate uses, although input of more weathered Greenland Group materials in the upper reaches (eg of the Mawhera-iti or Little Grey) resulted in product that was not satisfactory for sealing chip or railway ballast. Of greater importance was the fact that short-term studies showed that a minimum threshold of flow was required for gravel entrainment, and that significant sediment movement only occurred above the one-year return period flood. Ongoing monitoring of river profiles, with accompanying flow gauging, would clearly be necessary were a substantial increase in river bed extraction to be permitted by The West Coast Regional Council.

The high-shear colloidal mixer is generally recognised as the most efficient method of mixing cement based grouts. Only recently however has this technology been applied to the production of cemented rockfill (CRF) for use in underground mines in North America. Traditionally, paddle type mixers have been used to produce the cement based slurries required for the preparation of CRF. While considerable success has been achieved with these mixers, tremendous advantages are attained with the colloidal mixer. The combined effect of the highly efficient mixing action and the ability to mix low water/solids ratios, allows for reductions in the cement content for a given strength requirement. Cement can also be replaced by cheaper fillers such as flyash, resulting in further cost savings. Although large-scale dedicated CRF batching plants are typical, there is a growing need for mobile plants capable of operating anywhere underground. The compact size and rapid batching speed of high-shear colloidal mixers has allowed them to be incorporated into skid mounted systems capable of producing and discharging cement based slurries onto rockfill aggregate for the production of CRF. In many cases run-of-mine development waste can be used as CRF aggregate with these slurry plants thereby reducing the cost of waste rock removal. These relatively low cost portable plants have now allowed several mines to economically recover isolated pillars and realise positive returns on their investment.

This paper focuses on measures of the economic significance of mineral exploitation and processing activities, such as beneficiation, refining and smelting. Empirical measures are suggested to quantify the relevance of the degree processing within a nation's mineral industry. The most useful, based on the input-output econometric framework, are used to establish the magnitude of links between the mineral industry and its satellite activities and for the appraisal of large, non-marginal projects. The input-output impact analysis is refined to allow for country specific behaviour and synthetic indices for the appraisal of investments in the mineral sector are developed. These indices are further improved with the introduction of shadow prices to incorporate socio-economic issues. They are useful to direct mineral policy decisions and several investments towards the most promising objectives for national goals. Finally traditional methods for the appraisal of small scale, marginal, mineral projects are assessed where local impact and regional development issues are more relevant than national ones.

Metal grades and contents of ore deposits should be measured in an unbiased manner, and with a degree of precision that reduces to an acceptable level the risk to put into production inviable prospects. The additive property of variances for metal grades and contents is used to assess the accuracy and precision characteristics of this measurement process. Each stage in the process of extracting different types of samples from ore deposits, preparing test samples from drill core sections, drill chips or crushed ore, and collecting and assaying test portions, contributes a variance component to the intrinsic variability of a metal's distribution in its matrix. Deducting such extrinsic variances results in more precise estimates for metal grades and contents of elementary units. The cumulative metal content for a set of elementary units of in-situ ore, and the sum of the variances for metal contents of all units in the set, can be used to calculate confidence intervals and confidence ranges at different probability levels as measures for risk.

Since 1975 two electric hydraulic drills, a Robbins 11ND and an Atlas Copco C0P1038, have been part of the production drilling fleet at Mount Isa Mines Limited's Isa Mine. As might be expected with innovative and technically more complex machines, breakdowns and mainten- ance problems have been greater than those experienced with pneumatic drifters. This has been especially so with the COP1038 but in co-operation with Atlas Copco, many modific- ations have been made to alleviate operating problems. The training and quality of the maintenance workforce is of great importance. The use of coloured pictorial diagrams for hydraulic trouble-shooting will aid in minimising maintenance downtime. Both machines have achieved good operator acceptance. This is the result of many factors, the major ones being the more acceptable environmental conditions, the relatively low amount of physical effort and the high degree of mechanisation. The drilling area is one in which there is great potential for cost savings and product- ivity gains. Because both machines are capable of a high drilling output, Isa Mine is confident of achieving these aims.

We all live in professional silos û comfort zones, where we talk to like-minded people with the same training, experience and view of the world. We note in passing the existence of other disciplines, but they are tolerated rather than embraced. To the geologist, the metallurgist is a mad scientist conjuring gold out of some foul solution about which the less said the better. To the metallurgist, the geologist is a bearded, self-appointed sage who guesses what is under our feet by sniffing the air, and drives a Land Rover badly. As to the view of mining engineers held by both geologists and metallurgists, this is best left to the imagination. And of course we are all confused by the term æmetallurgistÆ. I am called a metallurgist though my skills are in mineral processing not metal processing, but I canÆt be called a mineralogist because that definition is already taken. *Please note that this is available as an extended abstract only*

The word governing derives from gubernare meaningto pilot a ship. Being inclined to metaphors, one could be forgiven to think that politicians act this verb and captain the Nation's ship into some definite course. In the case of at least the mineral resources industry, it seems that there are not many James Cook followers in our parliaments: Australia's approach to mineral and energy policy is often chaotic - witness the 1935 to 1961 ban on iron ore export-ing which prevented the development of a significant steel industry at time when the World was hungry for this metal, just to mention one amongst many other examples.The follies of Australia's mineral policies are well il-lustrated in the case of uranium mining. Although Australia had the Western World's largest economic reserves of uranium, it is onlythefifth producing nation and its uranium potential is largely unrealised. At the root of this situation are the interventionist attitudes and policies of successive Federal Governments which for more than four decades distorted the Investment decision and, in more recent times. discouraaed investment.

Of the energy resources present in Australia, coal and uranium are by far the largest. These two resources ap- pear sufficient to satisfy Australia's energy needs beyond the immediately foreseeable future and long after the natural petroleum resources are exhausted or have ceased to play a significant role. By that time, coal could be converted in plants of very large size to synthetic liquid and gaseous fuels which will be used as substitutes for pet- roleum fuels, particularly for transport. The basic role of uranium will be to supply electricity from nuclear power stations for heat and power requirements, thereby freeing non-coking coal largely for conversion purposes. The establishment of these enterprises will require a massive national effort and a high degree of co-ordination at the planning stage.

Why go to the CIS? The vast mineral potential of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) has long been recognised, but it has taken the lowering of the iron curtain to open up the region to serious mineral development consideration by the Western World. The advent of a free market economy and the emergence of the Independent States with pressing needs for foreign investment has led to a greatly improved investment climate. Coupled with the desire for some of the more entrepreneurial resources companies to head the wave of investment to the region, this sequence of events has promised a great deal, but delivered only modest progress to-date. Potential gold project development has provided the major focus, for three reasons: the region is highly prospective for gold, gold projects tend to have a relatively lower start-up capital cost compared to base metal and fossil fuel projects and finally bullion or refined gold is more readily transportable and easier to sell.

Recent whole-rock geochemical data from nearly 900 fresh drill core and underground samples taken from seven central Victorian gold deposits confirm the presence of distinct and identifiable primary alteration haloes surrounding the deposits. Ferroan carbonate alteration extends for up to several hundred metres away from turbidite-hosted gold mineralisation outside of contact metamorphic aureoles. A less distinct phyllic alteration zone can be identified using geochemical molar ratios or short wave infrared analysis. It generally overlaps a sulfidic halo characterised by disseminated pyrite and in close proximity to mineralised structures, arsenopyrite. The extent of the sulfidic halo can be traced using low-level analysis of pathfinder elements such as S, Au, As and Sb. Recognition of these alteration features enlarges the target for exploration and provides a tool by which drilling can be directed towards mineralised structures. In this paper, the use of topology preserving projections (Sammon maps) and neural networks are considered as a basis for the construction of multivariate statistical process control charts for a semi-autogenous grinding circuit on a gold plant. Comminution circuits are often operated in a quasi-steady state mode, where the mills tend to move rapidly from one state to another. This makes them difficult to monitor by conventional means designed for continuous steady state processes. As a first step, process data reflecting normal operating conditions are mapped with SammonÆs algorithm. Only one feature is extracted at a time and each mapping is captured by a neural network model to allow online application. Reverse neural network models are used to reconstruct the data prior to the extraction of subsequent features from the data residuals. The ensemble of neural network models can then be used for both fault detection and identification. The approach compared favourable with both linear and non-linear principal component models. It was able to detect two simulated fault conditions both with a reliability of 100 per cent, as opposed to 57.8 per cent and 95.2 per cent detected by an approach based on the use of linear principal component analysis and 84.1 per cent and 98.0 per cent detected by an approach based on non-linear principal components extracted with auto-associative neural networks.

Historical investigations of mineral flotation have highlighted the many factors which affect flotation. Some of these are related to the mineral, its degree of liberation (however defined), solution chemistry and flotation reagents. The complexity of the interactions between these factors often leads to uncertainty over whether the final grade/recovery results obtained in either laboratory or pilot scale tests are in fact the maximum recovery at a specific grade. The reason for this is that there has not previously been a general technique for establishing the floatability of an ore. This study describes the further development of the 'tree' flotation technique for minerals other than coal, and in particular its application to iron ores. Oxides have been chosen as a system of intermediate complexity between the simple coal system and sulphide minerals to illustrate the principles and develop the concepts. The 'tree' flotation procedure consists of the progressive flotation to completion of successive froth products, followed by reflotation to remove entrained material. It therefore represents an 'equilibrium' approach to floatability rather than a kinetic approach. By ordering the various products and tails in order of increasing grade, a cumulative curve of grade and recovery can be constructed against which an isolated batch or plant result on the same ore can be compared. In this investigation, a Jaspilitic iron ore was tested at various grind sizes to determine the 'best' flotation grade-recovery that could be obtained with a given set of reagent conditions. The separation characteristics of a process are best measured on a system which contains particles which behave as 'middlings' with respect to the process in question. For this reason a natural ore was chosen in preference to model systems in order to relate more readily to plant situations.
