Proton microprobe and electron microprobe analysis are being used in combination for in situ determination of the trace element contents of oxide, sulphide and silicate minerals in a sample of the Merensky Reef. Initial results indicate that chromites contain only Ni, Zn, Ga, Zr ar d Nb. Platinum-group elements, if present, are at concentrations less than 2 to 6ppm. Ru, Rh and Pd are the only platinum group elements to be consistently detected in the sulphides. PentLindite is the most important host for these elements with the concentration of these elements being dependant upon the mineral association in which it occurs

Phu Bia Mining Ltd, a subsidiary of Pan Australian Resources Ltd owns and operates the Phu Kham copper concentrator located in the Xaysomboun District, Lao PeopleÆs Democratic Republic. Construction and commissioning of the 12 Mt/a copper concentrator and associated facilities was undertaken by Ausenco Ltd and handed over to Phu Bia Mining Ltd in April, 2008. The first copper concentrate was produced in April 2008 and the ship carrying the first shipment of copper concentrate set sail 27 July 2008. Nameplate mill throughput was reached in August, 2008 when 1 020 000 dmt of ore was treated in the milling and flotation circuit. The Cu-Au mineralisation is contained in skarn and stockwork mineralisation and is interpreted as a distal expression of a conventional porphyry copper-gold system. Copper mineralisation is principally in the form of chalcopyrite with lesser bornite. Gold occurs as small grains, typically associated with copper minerals. In the upper portions of the orebody, oxidation and water table movements have resulted in near surface leaching of the copper and below the leached zone, supergene enrichment resulted in chalcocite mineralisation. The circuit operates with a semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) û ball mill circuit, feeding a bank of OK200 rougher cells. Rougher concentrate is reground in an IsaMill prior to entering a cleaner circuit consisting of three stages of cleaning and one stage of cleaner scavenging. The concentrate typically assaying 24 per cent Cu and 6 - 7 g/t Au is hauled for over 1000 km across the border to the Port of Sriracha in Thailand, and stocked in sheds at the wharf from which it is shipped to various Asian smelters. This paper discusses the successful commissioning and ramp up to design tonnage and metallurgical performance. In addition, a program to optimise both the comminution and flotation circuit is detailed with reference to grinding efficiency, flotation residence time and size by size mineral recovery.

The convergence of communication technologies in the office/surface environment has been identified by the mining industry as a means to achieve their long-standing goal. In particular use of Internet Protocol (IP) systems are seen as proving a basis for a mineÆs communication infrastructure. This paper presents the development philosophy and work undertaken by Inco Limited in Canada, as well as the implications of this on suppliers to enable the technology to be mine worthy and readily available.

Longwall advance mining is still the predaninant system of coal extraction in the U.K., contribiiting to sane 70 % of underground coal production. Gate roadways providing access to a longwall advancing coal face are maintained adjacent to a rib pillar under high strata abutment pressures and the caving rock mass. It is very difficult to realistically model such access roadways using mathematical or numerical techniques and hence, predict roadway closure. For the past 15 years, a research group in Nottingham University has been engaged in the study of longwall gate roadway stability using observation methods. Gate roadway deformations have been measured in 224 gate roadways and a comprehensive data base has been established. The paper describes the statistical analysis of this database and presents sane. predictive equations which will enable a forecast of the gate roadway closure to he made. Further field work to validate these equations. is described together with an error analysis. The results are very promising and indicate that it is possible to predict gate roadway closure in the U.K. within practical limits of Accuracy.

A description is presented of the results of reduction experiments using a laboratory reduction apparatus in which simulation of the gas and temperature profiles which occur in direct reduction shaft furnaces is achieved using microcomputer control. The apparatus allows continously changing reduction conditions to be impressed on lump or pellet samples to simulate the environment that is experienced by iron ore burdens during their transit down the shaft of a direct reduction furnace. Three pellet samples and three lump ore samples were reduced in the apparatus. Comparative reduction curves and strengths after reduction for the materials were obtained over a range of reduction temp- eratures using Midrex-type gas compositions. The resulting reduction and strength curves show considerable variation in behaviour and reflect the physical and chemical variations in the individual ore and pellet types. A comparison is made of the reduction rates and modes of reduction of the samples reduced under "conventional" test conditions using a single unchanging gas composition and the simulated shaft furnace reduction conditions. It was observed that the course of reduction is very different in the two procedures and the major influence of temperature on the strength of the reduced product is noted.

The application of modern sciences prior to nineteenseventies have resulted in the placing of Continental Drift theory into broader concept of Plate Tectonics. The concept is applied to explain the Cenozoic Tectonics of North Sumatera.Oceanic crust flooring the Indian Ocean is moving northeasterly and being obliquely subducted at a Benioff zone along the western margin of Asian Plate, marked by the Sunda Trench in the west coast of Sumatera. This phenomenon was generated since late Mesozoic, continued during Cenozoic era up to present day, resulted an exellent example of arc-trench system which can be traced along SW - NE transect of North Sumatera.The oblique-subducting plate of Indian Ocean beneath Asian Plate, together with spreading of Andaman seafloor beginning in Pliocen epoch, have led to the origin of Sumateran Fault System; the System extends throughout the length of Sumatera island. In the region under review it comprises almost contiguous set of broadly SE-trending. Evidences for transcurent-dextral displacement have been observed.

Current problems in predicting sub-surface strata movement and fracture development due to longwall mining have highlighted the need for more accurate, dependable methods of physical modelling of rock mechanics problems which are beyond the capabilities of current mathematical techniques. Physical model studies of the caved zone above the working faces up to the base of a water source are of importance in attempting to understand changes in mass permeability due to induced fracture zones and the resulting ground water conditions. Turkey's most important supplies of coking coals are to be found within the hard coal resources of the Black Sea coast. Coal seams up to 9 metres thick, dipping at angles as steep as 90 degrees are being successfully mined at the Kozlu Mine. Since 1956, mining operations have been carried out under the sea in dry conditions. The undersea mining conditions of the Kozlu Mine have been investigated using scaled physical models constructed from artificial materials which satisfied necessary scaling requirements. Models representing the in-situ conditions were tested and the following extraction sequence was employed: 1. The Sulu Seam extraction 2. The Acilik Seam extraction (as two slices) 3. The Piric Seam extraction. The displacement of the fixed reference points were subsequently measured using a high precision photogrammetric technique and induced horizontal and vertical strains were calculated.

An efficient filtration plant can be designed only from an adequate knowledge of the filtration characteristics of the material to be handled; if these characteristics can be expressed in the form of an equation the work of design is simplified immensely. The literature of the subject contains numerous equations which have been developed by various workers to express their results, usually obtained from a 'Very limited class of material, and from moderately thick pulps. Such expressions have been found quite unsuited for use in the case of thin, very free filtering pulps.In 1926, Underwood put forward an equation having a general for m, and which, he was able to show, provided a satisfactory expression of the data obtained and published by a large number of earlier workers. This equation has been found a very satisfactory and useful tool for the study of a variety of filtration problems. The coastline is. an incomparable stretch of sea coast known as Ninety Mile Beach. Two gas pipelines and two oil pipelines carrying hydrocarbons from thb'Bass Strait fields to the markets of Australia cross this beach. They cannot be seen as they are laid in trenching stretch- ing many miles out to sea and the beach was restored to its natural state. Even where the dunes were disturbed, suitable grass was sown thus consolidating the sand and preventing erosion. Ninety Mile Beach is but one of the many key.wildlife and recreational areas that our operations must be concerned with. Others include Westernport and Corner Inlet, but the one discussed in this paper in particular is the platform area of the Bass Strait itself. Never was the old adage "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" more meaningful than in offshore oil production. All are well aware of some of the events of the past several years that resulted in large and costly oil spills. Far less is known, seen or publicised about the measures and developments that are undertaken to ensure that such events do not occur. We also have well developed plans for response in the event of an emergency situation, which can be initiated with great rapidity. Our responsibility is to ensure that with the best of engineering technology and operating procedures, spills do not occur.

The methods employed in dressing 'the tin ore up to the required percentage of purity depend mainly on the type of ore crushed.These may be briefly divided into two distinct classes-viz., q, free: milling ore and a complex milling ore. In the former the ore is practically free from the common metallic sulphides, such as pyrites, mispickel, blende, galena, etc., and 1!' clean concentrate of 70 per cent metallic tin can be directly obtained in one continuous act of concentration; in the latter, however, in order to get a good extraction, it is only advisable to primarily concentrate up to 30 to 40 per cent. tin oxide, the rest being the sulphides of the metals. This concentrate is then roasted, re-ground, and re-concentrated up to 70 per cent. metallic tin on a separate set of tables.In the complex milling ore the tin is intermixed very closely with the sulphides, so that it becomes necessary to collect all the mineral present in order to obtain clean tailings. Stamp mills are the most popular machines for the primary crushing in the district, but whether they are invariably the best for the purpose is rather an open question. No doubt for some of the very tough chloritic ores they are the most efficient, but for a brittle quartzose ore, such as the free milling proposition usually is, the writer thinks Oornish rolls would well hold their own, especially when the tin occurs coarse, as is so often the case with this class of ore. The Limpopo region in southern Africa is considered to be a favourable target for the discovery of base and precious metal mineral deposits. The integration of gravity, geomagnetic, LANDSAT data and geotectonic history is used to formulate an ore deposit model which can be used in the implementation of mineral exploration programmes. Field work was carried out to test and refine the model.

This paper introduces a classification of gold orebodies, and comments on the importance of cutting high grade values, the choice of an appropriate ore reserve method and the necessity for producing recoverable ore reserves by considering the mining policy. The author stresses the importance of obtaining the appropriate information from the data relevant to a particular deposit as opposed to transfering parameters from one deposit to another.

The requirement to use explosives in ground temperatures exceeding 50¦C is becoming more common as mines work to maximise the recovery of their resources. Orica Explosives was requested to assist in the development and implementation of æhot blastingÆ safe working procedures at Liddell Coal Open Cut in the Hunter Valley. The mine operator, Hunter Valley Earthmoving (HVE), had to contend not only with elevated temperatures in their overburden resulting from burning coal beneath, but also old underground workings which tended to exacerbate the problem. The paper discusses the following issues:the consultative process that was used to develop the procedures employed to ensure the process could be carried out safely; the technical issues surrounding blasting in hot ground, including temperature monitoring, product selection, application and design to ensure safety and performance were maintained; the need for confidence and trust in the team that was working together in a potentially hazardous environment, the emotive issues that were encountered and how they were addressed; the value of a regular review process combined with open and honest communication to ensure the procedures represented best practice and that all stakeholders understood the process; and the value delivered to Liddell Coal when sterilised areas of coal became accessible with little disruption to the mining process. The paper also discusses the challenges that were encountered in the Reservoir Block where proximity to major power lines and rail infrastructure meant that hot blasting procedures had to also consider vibration limits and the need for Energy Australia to disconnect the power.

The backfilling operation at Olympic Dam mine supports a 9.8 Mtpa underground Long Hole Open Stoping (LHOS) operation. It involves a combination of Cemented Aggregate Fill (CAF), surface rockfill and underground rockfill. The fill material is introduced from the surface via boreholes into the top of the stopes. Due to the deleterious effects of the dust and the thickness of the atmosphere in the stope it is not possible to view the filling process either at optical or infrared (IR) wavelengths. The need for a means to measure the filling process is driven by the placement of both rock and CAF fill in the stopes. The large volumes and high relative cost of CAF makes the minimisation of CAF fill a business priority. Incorrect filling can lead to the sterilisation of ore reserve. The use of millimeter wave radar to view through the haze to give real-time data on the relative positions of the different fill masses is being developed as an in-stope fill monitoring device. This paper reviews the salient points of the technology and its potential use in the backfilling operation at Olympic Dam. The broader potential of this technology for use in the mining industry by æseeingÆ through water and dust laden environments such as that found in stopes and ore passes is also discussed.

Both on a macro and micro level the single process parts of drilling and blasting are outlined and their interaction is explained. The use of this approach for closing the gap between process planning and process implementation is explained and an example of the value generated is given.

Innovative mining and blasting techniques were demanded at the Richmont Mines, Francoeur Mine in Quebec, Canada, by a narrow, shallowly dipping high grade gold ore body. The ore body being mined occurs as a thin tabular deposit varying in thickness between 1.5 and 3.7 metres, and dipping at 36¦. The mine proposed experimenting with open stoping techniques using small diameter drill-holes. The hangingwall required progressive, full face rockbolting after each production blast, utilising a specially manufactured machine which provided access to the hangingwall for both scaling and bolting. Blasted material is mucked from the stope by scraper and hoisted directly to surface without benefit of primary crushing.

A better connection between laboratory- and pilot-scale test results, and heap bioleaching performance can be achieved by generating reliable information on the fundamental microbial, chemical and physical processes that occur in heaps and incorporating this information into a comprehensive and robust model. More efficient heap bioleaching, particularly of chalcopyrite, has the potential to add value to the mining industry as well as deliver attractive environmental and social benefits to the communities within which those companies operate.The results of fundamental chemical and microbiological studies of the leaching mechanism, the temperature dependence of chalcopyrite bioleaching, and the optimisation of leaching conditions are described with examples from full-scale heaps. The development and application of a number of novel techniques and tools has assisted our understanding of heap subprocesses mineralogy, hydrology, chemistry and microbiology. The heap bioleaching model HeapSim, which embodies a large number of effects not previously accounted for in other models, continues to be refined and has been applied successfully to the study of several heap bioleach systems.

Heavy minerals recovered from recently discovered deposits in the Murray Basin are proving to be somewhat more difficult to process into saleable ilmenite products than ilmenites from existing operations. This is due to the nature of the gangue minerals present, the impurities in the valuable minerals and the size distribution of the mineral assemblages. Ilmenite product quality, in particular, can be adversely affected by any of these factors. Over the past two years the authors have been involved in assessing the potential to manufacture ilmenite products from a variety of mineral sand deposits in the Murray Basin. The steps undertaken to define the potential products and develop suitable flowsheets have evolved in parallel to the exploration efforts, in cooperation with companies undertaking exploration in the Murray Basin. A combination of an understanding of detailed mineralogy, application of magnetic fractionation and modification of magnetic susceptibility of the ilmenites has in all cases, been successful in improving ilmenite product quality. The targeting of particular ilmenites to specific downstream processes for TiO2 pigment manufacture is the most challenging aspect of this development.
