The original bulk air cooling system at this particular mine made use of two water chilling refrigeration machines to produce peak cooling of approximately 12 MWR with a downcast air temperature of about 7°C; however, as the shaft is not used for transporting personnel, the opportunity existed to supply more cooling to the mine by lowering the downcast air temperature. An ice storage facility has been constructed and provides a range of opportunities in operating the system: colder air temperature sent to the shaft, enabled by using near-zero degree water produced by melting ice to cool the air; electricity time-of-use management, by shifting electricity usage out of peak tariff periods; and increased peak cooling capacity, by melting ice while chilling water. Ice is created in the storage facility at night while the ambient air temperature is low and then melted to produce cold water when required by the cooling process. An ice dam was constructed and serpentine stainless steel coils installed where the ice is produced; one of the refrigeration machines was converted to chill a glycol solution to subzero temperatures to create the ice on the coils; a plate heat exchanger was installed to allow the glycol chiller to act as a water chiller as well; and a third spray stage was added to the bulk air cooler to utilise the near-zero water. Bauxite residue is one of the most important by-products from the alumina industry with no commercial use till now. The utilisation of bauxite residue through pelletising with different lime additions, hydrogen reduction, and smelting has been studied in this work. Three different types of green pellets were made with varying calcite-to-bauxite residue ratio and subsequently sintered at elevated temperatures. The sintered pellets were isothermally reduced at 1000°C under hydrogen gas followed by smelting of the reduced pellets in argon at 1500°C. Smelting of the reduced pellets leads to the recovery of metallic iron and the formation of a leachable calcium aluminate slag. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) were used to characterise the phases and microstructural analysis. The iron produced in the smelting process has a high purity, above 99.5 wt per cent. While the iron content of the slags is quite low, and the slags shows variations of krotite (CaAl2O4), gehlenite (Ca2Al2SiO7), and perovskite (CaTiO3) phases based on the variation of calcite addition. It was found that the more calcite addition in pelletising yields higher percentage of krotite phase as compared to lower calcite-containing pellets. Employing quantitative XRD analysis, the krotite phase fraction was found approximately 85 wt per cent for higher calcite-added pellet, and around 74 wt per cent for lower calcite-added pellet. It is self-evident that the availability of well qualified and experienced people to manage mining operations is vital to the success of an individual mine and to the ability to develop new mines either in Australia or overseas. For larger operations the term "mine manager" is here used to denote a range of positions within an individual company. Thus "mine managers" may be people managing individual mines at one geographic location with overall management provided by other "mine managers" in the roles such as mine super- intendents, production managers, general managers, etc. Smaller operations may have only a single level of management nominated as "mine manager".

A series of tests on rock stress measurement devices used with the overcoring method indicated that improvements could be made in their construction. A prototype inclusion cell was developed with strain gauge rosettes bonded to a 0.05 mm thickness stainless steel sheet which was formed into a cylinder around two end pieces. The finished diameter was slightly larger than previous cells so that the thinner plate and the reduced annulus of Araldite cement in the installation borehole gave a better response in the laboratory than the other cells tested, especially in simulated bedded rock. It was less affected by inhomogeneity and temperature changes. Its high sensitivity should make it suitable for both absolute stress measurement and field monitoring. A table of comparative readings is given for the new cell and for four other devices used in simulated in-situ rock conditions.

The paper describes a method of making quantitative mineralogical measurements on many of the major lead/zinc orebodies in Australia. The work was done using QEM*SEM. It was found that a relationship betwen phase-specific surface area and particle size, when plotted in a suitable way, gave a straight line with slope related to the grain size of the mineral in question. The method provides an excellent way of differen- tiating between minerals in existing orebodies and, consequently, an easy way to establish a comparison between a new prospect or orezone and current operations.

"Successful rehabilitation of tailings landforms of tens to thousands of hectares in size at base metal mines is critical to mining companies’ ‘social licence to operate’. Rehabilitation technology used is closely related to both the economic sustainability of the mining company and the ecological sustainability of the mined environment. Conventional technology to rehabilitate mine waste landforms is costly and constrained by the availability of soil (to reconstruct root zones) and clay materials (to reconstruct compressed layer). Depending on mine waste properties and site-specific resource availability, it is not uncommon to cost A$0.1–0.5 M/ha for the establishment of conventional cover systems over mine waste domains, which often accounts for large proportion of the total closure costs. This can lead to costs approaching several hundred millions dollars for rehabilitating larger tailings and acidic waste rock using conventional cover systems.The present extended abstract proposes a suite of new technologies to tackle the problems outlined above and discusses critical factors in successful rehabilitation from substrate levels to the whole landform performance, in two key aspects:in situ engineering of tailings soil to offset/reduce materials requiredin situ chemical engineering of massive hardpan layer through alkali-activation and mineral gel cross-linking network mechanisms to encapsulate reactive tailings and achieving sustainable hydro-geochemical stability in root zones.This aims at functionally replacing the roles of the compressed clay layer and capillary breaks in conventional covers. These technologies would improve both the economic and ecological sustainability of mine waste rehabilitation, thus addressing the triple-bottom line of mining and mineral processing industries not only in Australia but other countries.CITATION:Huang, L, 2016. Whitehaven Coal Limited operates an underground longwall mine near Narrabri, New South Wales. The mining horizon in the Hoskissons Seam is overlain by a 16–20 m thick unit known as the Digby Conglomerate, a unit that is sufficiently massive to have potential to cause a windblast during first caving at the start of each longwall panel and periodic weighting throughout the panel. A program of hydraulic fracturing has been successfully used to precondition the conglomerate strata to increase its caveability at the start of each panel. SASOL Synthetic Fuels has recently completed the design of sampling systems for raw and blended coal feeding the gasifiers at Secunda, South Africa. The new systems will replace manual, stopped belt sampling and have been designed to achieve specific accuracy targets on a daily basis. The sampling system is unusual in the coal industry in that the fines content (-5.5 mm nominal) of the coal is very critical and is to be determined with high accuracy.The sampling system was designed to meet carefully considered target accuracies using methods of modern sampling theory. The heterogeneity of the coal streams involved with respect to the critical analytes was determined by appropriate sampling and sample analysis. The statistical characterisation of the time variation of analytes in the process streams was based on variograms derived from on-line ash gauges. From this point, the design was completed using fundamental statistical sampling theory and some simulation studies. The paper discusses the development of the sampling system design in detail as well as the plans to use the data stream to provide timely alarms when the coal quality deviates from the target specification.

The use of econometric models to assess the effects of a Government's policy on an industry is gaining momentum. This is particularly so for the Mineral Industry and it is important that mineral industry management understands the techniques involved in developing econometric models. Models are usually constructed outside the industry by either government departments or their consultants and used by the policy makers to investigate artificially the implementation and ramifications of new policies. This paper discusses the application of econometric models in Governmental policy determination, highlights the use of various models in Australia and gives an overview of the techniques involved using Australian examples.

In Australia and New Zealand, the 'Australasian Code for Reporting of Identified Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves', which was released by industry in 1989, is operating successfully in a co-operative approach between industry and regulatory authorities. Similar codes or guidelines exist or are under development in the United States of America, Canada, the United Kingdom and South Africa, although the regulatory backing given to the Australasian Code is unique. International standard definitions for Mineral Resources and Reserves, and for categories of Resources and Reserves, have been under development by the Council of Mining and Metallurgical Institutions since 1994 and have already stimulated considerable convergence of definitions and reporting standards in participating countries. It is hoped that agreement on this international standard for public reporting by mining companies will be reached within the next two years, and it is expected that adoption of the standard will result in a higher and more uniform quality of reporting worldwide, with a consequently greater interest on the part of the general public and financiers in investing in the mining industry.

The role of the mine geologist in a business perspective is self-evident to some, but to others it may be a new concept. All mine geologists need to know exactly how they add value to the business if they are to be successful. Alternatively, if they do not add value, then they will become redundant. This paper seeks to understand some of the contributing problems that hinder the mine geologist from operating in a business perspective. In doing so, a new context (for some) is proposed to aid the mine geologist and the operation gain greater value from geology. The proposal suggests how to ensure that the activities of our geologists are intrinsically linked to the business process that we are involved in. The mine geologist can and must play a pivotal role in the success of an operation. To do this, they must understand some principles of business such as:process, customer/supplier relationships, and organisational structure. Our geologists must know the business objectives, understand the product that the customer needs and use their geological skills to deliver the product safely, on time and to specification. As geologists, we can be instrumental in ensuring that the operational environment is structured in such a way that maximum value is realised, not only from the mine geologists but the entire site team. In doing so, mine geologists will realise their full potential in delivering the outcomes the business demand, and therefore be recognised as strong contributors to business success.

BioLix is the term for a new class of biologically-derived lixiviants for precious metals (gold and silver) recovery. BioLix can be used as an alternative to cyanide on virgin and spent ores. The BioLix process is based on inducing microbial enzymatic reactions that generate organo-lixiviant chemicals. The bioprocess involves a two-stage culture strategy. First, specialty microorganisms are cultured to generate a high biomass. Then, a food-grade quality amendment is introduced that forces the microorganisms to produce the organo-lixiviant. The second-stage culture is applied to the ore where the microbial/lixiviant system acts on mineral surfaces to extract precious metals. The process operates at ambient temperatures and near neutral pH. This paper will examine the BioLix process through an extensive laboratory development and demonstration project. Laboratory development consisted of identifying and isolating specialty microorganisms and inducing agents for the production of the organo-lixiviant solutions. A demonstration was performed on low-grade and high-grade oxidised ore from the Buffalo Valley mine in Nevada, USA. Results indicate that the BioLix process was comparable to cyanide in terms of gold recovery and operated at near neutral pH and ambient temperatures. Applications for the BioLix process will be discussed including spent-ore re-leaching, cyanide replacement for virgin ore, and in situ mining.

Water-rock reactions such as pyrite oxidation and calcite dissolution strongly influence the pH of pit lakes that develop in open-cast mines after mine closure. The Martha Mine, located in world-class epithermal Au-Ag deposit at the southern end of the Coromandel Peninsula, New Zealand, is scheduled to close in 2007, after which the pit excavation will be rehabilitated into a recreational lake; the first pit lake in New Zealand. Mineral distribution maps from XRD results of 130 andesite samples identify regions that could produce or consume acidity in the future pit lake. Maps show pyrite, calcite, adularia, albite, illite and chlorite distribution in the wall rocks. These data identify five alteration mineral associations: potassic, propylitic, weathered, oxidised and weakly-altered. Pyrite occurs in potassic, propylitic and weathered associations, whereas calcite is restricted to propylitic association in the northeast wall. Subaerial, epilimnion, and hypolimnion exposure zones describe the physical and chemical weathering processes that are likely to occur in regions of pit wall, and the potential effects on lake water chemistry. The pH of epilimnion water will depend on the relative abundance of pyrite and calcite in the propylitic association in the northeast wall, whereas hypolimnion pH will depend upon the frequency of whole-lake circulation events that distribute dissolved oxygen to deep lake layer. In mines with diverse alteration associations, mineral distribution maps are an essential precursor for accurately estimating water-rock reactions in pit lake environments. Data may be directly incorporated into a quantitative geochemical model of future pit lake water chemistry.

For many years the mining industry at Broken Hill, New South Wales, Australia, was carried on with just sufficient attention to underground ventilation and hygiene conditions as to keep pace with necessity. However, the campaign against industrial diseases in other mining centres (notably South Africa) some years ago, brought the subject more prominently before local mining engineers.Throughout a period of several years, gradual improvement has been effected, and at the present time industrial hygiene is considered an essential part of the production operations of the various companies.In June, 1918, a move was first made by the Board of Trade advising an inquiry respecting the health of employees engaged in the metalliferous mining industry in the State of New South Wales. At the end of that year, a recommendation was made to the State Government by the Board of Trade that a Techni.cal Commission of Inquiry be appointed to examine and report upon the dust conditions of the metalliferous mines at Broken Hill. Following this a second report presented in 1919 made specific recommendations in respect to the scope of such a Commission. A Technical Commission of Inquiry was accordingly appointed and arrived in Broken Hill to inquire into the prevalence of miner's phthisis and pneumonoconiosis in the mines. Early in March, 1920, the examination of all mine employees commenced, and the work was completed in June, 1920. In the last two decades, equipment used in the coal mining operations has become much more sophisticated. The way that work is organised and performed in the industry has also changed significantly. Changes in equipment specification or procedures inevitably means that the risk associated with that equipment or procedure also changes. In an attempt to address this the Joint Coal Board Occupational Health and Safety Trust (JCB) commissioned the University of New South Wales Mining Research Centre and Mine Site Technologies to perform a feasibility study into the development and deployment of Virtual Reality (VR) based training simulators in the New South Wales coal industry. The main aims of the study were to identify, the key providers of VR Technology, the VR options available to the JCB and the information that would need to be included in any simulator. It was anticipated that a critical assessment of these components would produce a format for a cost effective, state of the art simulator that could be readily accessed by all mines. The expectations of the feasibility study were that VR should offer three-dimensional (3D) simulations that are interactive, high-resolution models of real environments based on best practice Safety Management Plans. It was anticipated that the simulations would allow trainees to experience the consequences of poor decision-making and allow them to learn from their mistakes in a safe and forgiving environment. It was envisaged that such simulators would become an addition to the existing training methods used in the industry.

The series of events leading to the adoption of more complex flotation circuits for coal have been reviewed. In essence, it has been concluded that ac- ceptable overall flotation recovery will only be obtained when efficient distri- bution of collector over all the component feed size fractions is ensured. The achievement of this goal is most likely to be obtained by feed classification and separate flotation of appropriate size fractions. The adoption of such a phil- osophy, however, imposes a number of process problems of both a chemical and an engineering nature. Some of these problems have been identified and possible solutions discussed. A case is emerging for the development of a new generation of flotation cells designed specifically for the flotation of classified coal and for the development of a series of novel re- agents which have the propensity to float middling particles.

Since its invention by Professor Klaus Schonert of the University of Clausthal, Germany, high pressure rolls comminution has attained near total acceptance as the preferred method of size reduction in the cement industry. Over 300 units have been manufactured worldwide. At locations where the system has been installed, considerable energy savings have been realised. These energy savings are generally in the range of 20 to 30 per cent compared to conventional ball mill circuits. However up to 50 per cent power saving has been achieved at some installations. This technology, with the exception of the diamond industry, has up to now had only limited success in ore processing. This has mainly been attributable to the abrasiveness of ores encountered in this industry leading to high wear rates. These high wear rates have given rise to an unacceptably short life time of the wear surface of the rolls, requiring regular replacement. A new wear surface has been developed which has shown to give a ten-fold increase in service life over conventional surfaces. This, together with developments made in machine design now give the units the ability to attain the high availabilities demanded by the mining industry, and therefore to allow this industry to achieve the considerable operating cost savings offered by the high pressure rolls.

Alkali feldspar meggacrysts are commonly found (with aluminous clinopyroxene, kaersutitic amphibole, titanomagnetite, ilmenite and apatite, and more rarely with zircon and corundum) in alkalic basalts and their derivatives as discrete crystals and fragments. They are commonly euhedral or subhedral and may be up to 15 cm in size. Their occurrence has been reported from many localities around the world, e.g., Africa, Antarctica, eastern Australia, eastern China, East Fife (Scotland), Eifel (Germany), Massif Central (France), Mongolia, New Zealand, New Mexico (USA) and Siberia (USSR). These megacrysts are relatively homogeneous and belong to the Na-rich anorthoclase group, although Kutolin and Frolova (1970) called them sanidine due to their monoclinic nature. The majority of megacrysts have a molar orthoclase content (Or%) between 20 and 30 (Fig.1). These anorthoclase megacrysts possess a high degree of disorder, with the structural state belonging to the high albite-high sanidine series (Hoffer and Hoffer, 1973; Chapman, 1976).Published interpretations of the origin of anorthoclase megacrysts fall into the following two categories: either (1) Anorthoclase together with the associated pyroxene and amphibole crystallized from basaltic magmas as phenocrysts (cumulate phases) at high pressure and the present host basaltic rocks are the parent magmas for the anorthoclase megacrysts (Binns,l969; Binns et al. 1970; Kutolin and Frolova, 1970; Hoffer and Hoffer, 1973; Laughlin et al. 1974); or (2) Anorthoclase probably crystallized from a more evolved liquid at relatively lower pressure and was then picked up and carried to the surface by a later
