The distribution of a contaminant in a bulk mass greatly influences the effectiveness of sampling procedures. Most currently used sampling guidelines for genetically modified organisms (GMO) testing have stringent distribution requirements. Specifically, all these protocols are based upon the assumption that GM material, if present, is randomly distributed. Yet, assuming randomness is risky because the applied sampling plan may not provide an accurate estimate of the content of the contaminant. Despite the general consensus that an evaluation of the possibility of non-random distribution of GM materials within lots is a pre-requisite for the definition of effective sampling protocols, no experimental data on the distribution of GMOs in kernel lots are available anywhere in the world. Additionally, to date there is no distribution-free statistical model to estimate sampling errors, thus making the theoretical definition of optimal sampling technique impossible when randomness cannot be assumed. Here we present preliminary results of the KeLDA project, which is the first study investigating the distribution of GM materials in large soybean lots imported within the European Union. The extensive variability of GM content, observable both within and among soybean lots, indicates that heterogeneity issues cannot be overlooked when defining sampling strategies for large lots of particulate material and that randomness cannot be assumed a priori. A new statistical model free from any distribution assumptions, developed in order to estimate the sampling error associated with different sampling protocols together with the risk of false-negative results, is also presented. The new model, which is applicable to any consignment of particulate material with respect to any kind of contamination, presents two novelties: first, freedom from any distribution assumption; second, the possibility of estimating the magnitude of the sampling error associated with different sampling protocols as a function of specific distributional properties.

The Mt Todd Project is located 42 km northwest of Katherine in the Northern Territory. The identified mineral resource estimate for the Batman gold deposit is 66.7 million tonnes (Mt) grading 1.4 grams/tonne (g/t). Proved and Probable Ore Reserves total 42.3 Mt grading 1.5 g/t. Orebody definition and reserve estimation is based on extensive percussion and diamond drilling. Exhaustive bias analysis comparing grades produced from different drilling techniques has been undertaken. Similarly, detailed check assaying programs have been run to validate grade data produced by commercial laboratories used during the exploratory drilling phase. Significant biases were established from both studies and appropriate 'corrections' were made to drillhole databases prior to final resource and reserve estimation. 3D geostatistical modelling has been utilised for resource and reserve estimation, with specialist consultants contracted for this work. Soft sensors offer several practical advantages for the process control of comminution circuits by combining multiple conventional sensors and other data sources with real-time analysis using mechanistic, phenomenological or machine learning models. While there has been a growth in the use of machine learning techniques for developing soft sensors in minerals processing applications, this paper describes advantages and challenges of using soft sensor models developed on the basis of process knowledge. Recent experience with three new soft sensor technologies developed by the authors are discussed. The Mill Filling Inference Tool which has been implemented at several mine sites, compares SAG mill load cell and power draw measurements with outputs of a semi-mechanistic power model to estimate the mill ball and total filling in real time. The progressive wear of the mill liners is modelled, allowing the model to correct the load mass due to the mass loss automatically and to estimate the charge trajectory. This information enables the mill to be operated more confidently near its limits. A coarse-ore stockpile soft sensor as been recently developed using a 3D cellular automata-based model to track ore size throughout the pile, and estimating the live capacity and size at each stockpile feeder to the primary mills. Finally, a hydrocyclone soft sensor is being developed to monitor performance using available hydrocyclone models to estimate the size and flow balance around the cyclone in real time. The model-based soft-sensor approach aims to synthesise and analyse existing data and provide operators and engineers with process- and model-relevant information that can facilitate making better process decisions. Maintenance data has proven useful for model development as it allows soft sensors to automatically adjust and compensate for the effect of progressive wear, for example for mill liners, thus helping the models to maintain calibration throughout the equipment life.

This paper describes the ENVIB software system, which has been developed in a menu-driven form to aid in the monitoring and assess- ment of vibration caused by routine blasting operations and for research and development projects. The paper gives an outline of the capabilities of the system by means of screen-dumps and a general descriptive commentary. Technical notes have been added where appropriate to further describe the system. The ENVIB system covers: I . Analysis of blast vibration results, and preparation of graphs and tables for control and estimation purposes. 2. Effects of atmospheric conditions and air vibration propagation. 3. Real-time acquisition and analysis of analogue blast vibration sig- nals directly from transducer equipment or from FM tapes. 4. Analysis of digital files on floppy disc or transferred via the serial port from blast monitoring equipment. 5. Transfer function calculation for structure response studies.

Bougainville's copper mine is located on the west slope of the Crown Prince Range on Bougainville. A high grade copper concentrate is produced for sale to overseas customers. Production planning which was originally based on pilot plant data has developed progressively since commissioning of the concentrator in 1972. Pilot plant data and mine sampling have been supplanted by the correlation of concentrator performance with ore sources, as the basis for short term planning. The influence of accurate sampling is reflected in 1. hourly shift control, 2. the daily milling statement, 3. the prediction of the characteristics of ore from various mine locations, 4. production reconciliation, and 5. the control of copper losses. The mechanical and electrical failures of the original sampling system emphasized the need for a reliable, automatic sampling facility. The development of a pneumatic drive mechanism, which has now been fully field tested, was undertaken.

What is the best circuit to comminute primary crusher product to make beneficiation feed? Finding the best circuit to crush and grind minerals to beneficiation sizes is a complex problem that can lead to interminable discussion. Conclusions reached can be questioned. This will continue as long as the technology of comminution continues to expand, and is a mixture of many technical and economic factors in what is not a precise science. Laboratory and pilot plant procedures now exist that can help process engineers make sound decisions on which circuits are the best for crushing and grinding the specific ore being studied. It is the aim of this paper to discuss such procedures so a better under- standing of key decision parameters is avail- able, and to update comminution testing which has seen a. period of change in which new procedures have been introduced.

The introduction of rubber tyred diesel equipment underground in the early 1960's and subsequent design improvements to diesel haulage systems over the past 2 decades has meant that diesel truck haulage has often been the first choice when selecting a haulage system for a new underground mine. Even today only 9% of all vehicles underground are electric powered.However, with the development of more efficient electric haulage systems, the suc-cessful installation of low cost shaft hoisting systems and improvements in conveyor design, alternative haulage systems are appearing as viable alternatives to diesel truck hauling. In particular, the aspects of ergonomic and environmental operating conditions, maintenance and operating costs as well as productivity rates are becoming more and more important in the selection of underground haulage systems. Future develop-ment of existing diesel haulage systems will require that diesel haulage units become more productive, have considerably reduced exhaust emissions compared to existing units and remain the cheapest haulage method for under-ground one way haul distances up to a distance of 3 kilometres. The Charters Towers locality has been a historically renowned gold producing region and discovery of new ore deposits during the past decade have renewed exploration interests in the area. Further mineral exploration with conventional techniques is hindered by the presence of Cainozoic sedimentary deposits and volcanic flows overlying a major portion of the basement geology. Mineral exploration thus warrants new, innovative and cost-effective methods to probe beneath the Cainozoic cover in an attempt to discover new orebodies. There is growing awareness of the role of weathering as an agent of chemical dispersion into the cover sediments as well as a producer of supergene deposits in tectonically stable cratons (Butt and Zeegers, 1992). Consequently, landscape evolution coupled with regolith geochemistry is one of the methods increasingly being used to identify relevant sampling media to explore beneath weathered cover sediments and deeply weathered bedrock terrain (Anand, 1993). The aim of this paper is to describe and elucidate the regolith - landscape features of the region and combine geochemistry to assess the pertinence of the same on mineral exploration strategies in the Charters Towers area.

Biological monitoring programs for environmental protection require techniques that will provide both early detection of possible adverse effects, and assessment of the ecological significance of these effects. Monitoring techniques must include responses sensitive to the impact, that can be subjected to rigorous statistical analysis and for which statistical power is high. Such issues in baseline research of 'what and how to measure?' and 'for how long?' have been the focus of a program being developed to monitor and assess effects of mining operations on the effectively pristine, freshwater ecosystems of the Alligator Rivers Region (ARR) in tropical northern Australia. Application of the BACIP design, utilising a form of temporal replication, to univariate data (single species) and multivariate (community) data is described. For new ventures in Australia (such as mining), monitoring programs should be designed to establish with high probability that an impact on the ecosystem no greater than a prescribed amount has gone undetected - as opposed to simply allowing development to continue as long as 'proof' of impact is not available. Such a precautionary approach represents a shifting of the 'burden of proof' and would require with the BACIP design, a minimum number of baseline years in order to achieve some desired level of statistical power in a test for impact. Power analyses conducted on two to five years (depending upon the technique) of baseline data from streams of the ARR indicate that the BACIP design would not impose developmental constraints on mining and that a policy of reversal of the burden of proof would provide the cornerstone required for managing such development in an ecologically sustainable manner.

Rock masses when subjected to uniaxial or triaxial cyclic loading (eg in hydraulic running tunnels, during retrieval and injection of oil and gas from storage underground caverns and haulage roads), the material has a tendency to fail in fatigue. In order to design safe and reliable underground structures, the determination of brittleness under such loading conditions becomes a pre-requisite. Brittleness influences strongly the failure process and makes the rock mass behaviour complex under different tunnelling and mining activities. Brittleness Index is a term to quantify the brittleness feature of a specimen. In the present study, an attempt has been made to quantify the brittleness of jointed specimens using different brittleness criteria. The joints of the model jointed specimens were oriented at an angle of θ=15° normal to the loading direction, each having three different JRC’s=2–4, 12–14 and 14–16. The specimens were tested under triaxial conditions in incremental complete cyclic test scheme performed at displacement-controlled mode. Different brittleness criteria were used ie stress-strain dependent brittleness index, Young Modulus approach and energy-balance based mechanism. It was observed that energy-balance based mechanism which consider the post failure behaviour is more descriptive to reflect the whole variation of brittleness from sheer brittleness to ductility.

Outokumpu has developed a new chloride leach process, called HydroCopper«, to treat copper concentrates. Chalcopyrite is quite refractory in leaching and in sulfate milieu an autoclave of high temperature and pressure is required. However, in the HydroCopper«-process copper sulfides can effectively be leached in atmospheric pressure using strong, aggressive chloride solution and copper (II) ions as oxidant. Copper is precipitated from the purified pregnant leach solution as copper (I) oxide, which is filtered and reduced by hydrogen gas to metallic copper powder, which is melted and cast into copper product. Sodium chloride formed in precipitation is decomposed in a chlor-alkali electrolyser, the products of which are circulated back to the process: sodium hydroxide to copper (I) oxide precipitation, chlorine gas to leaching and hydrogen gas to the reduction of copper (I) oxide. During 2003 - 2004 the performance of the HydroCopper«-process was confirmed in a demonstration plant processing one tonne of copper per day. It has been found to be applicable for different kinds of concentrates and can also tolerate a wide range of impurities. A significant advantage of the process is that gold can be leached as a chloro-complex and recovered with active carbon. HydroCopper« can economically recover copper from concentrates and process to a cast copper product. The best utilisation of the process is in most cases achieved when the plant is situated at the mine site. Higher recoveries are attained by the optimisation of the whole operation chain from the mine and the concentrator to the HydroCopper« plant.

The Key Centre for Mines/International promotes, markets and develops overseas activities in applied geology, mining engineering, mineral processing and extractive metallurgy specifically in response to the perceived needs in the region for mineral resource and other related earth-science based development. the Key Centre for Mines/International will be involved in the overseas marketing of formal courses; special training activities such as short courses and in-house programs; technical and educational consultancy; research and development projects, and in the establishment of regional links through twinning, exchange and various network arrangements with other organisations in the region. Activities which are now being developed include a training program for Korean mining engineers and geologists, teaching and curriculum development in the Mineral Resources Engineering Faculty of the University Sains Malaysia and a staff development proposal for the Department of Geotechnology of Khon Kaen University, Thailand

The Central West of New South Wales is emerging as a significant metallogenic province. The development of Northparkes Mines (North Limited) and the Cadia Hill deposit (Newcrest) are establishing NSW as a highly prospective porphyry copper-gold province. Exploration in the area has been further buoyed by the Ridgeway discovery by Newcrest near Cadia. The fact that the Ridgeway prospect was discovered 300 m below surface under Tertiary basalt cover indicates that surface prospecting can no longer be considered alone as an adequate method to find significant new deposits.

The potential of hyperspectral mineral mapping within a mine environment is demonstrated. Central to this capability has been the development of portable or vehicle-mounted, hyperspectral mine face-mapping systems. Data from these systems were used to detect subtle mineralogical variations and map their distribution across rock faces in a fashion that previously was not possible. In one study, the data usability was enhanced by ædrapingÆ the mineralogical determinations over a three-dimensional æmodelÆ of the rock-face. The eventual melding of the spectral mine face-mapping and three-dimensional spatial technologies will result in a new generation of mineralogical and structural information becoming available to mine geologists, engineers and metallurgists. Specific uses for spectrally-derived, mineral mapping data sets could include:ore grade mapping systems based on either direct detection of ore minerals themselves (eg iron and nickel oxides), or mineralogies that may be used as surrogates for ore-grade information (via various alteration minerals) after a suitable orientation survey; detecting mineralogies that have a deleterious effect on milling, metallurgical processing or have occupational health implications (talc, swelling clays, carbonates, asbestos, etc); selective mining and blending by collecting, processing and displaying such mineralogical images in near real-time to monitor ore grade and quality, and allow the separation of ore from waste during loading operations at the mine face; a mineral detection and mapping capability to assist in structural and geotechnical mine planning applications; and an enhanced geological detection and mapping capability for ore mineral species or alteration mineralogies that may be used to vector further mineralisation, update the existing mine ore model, or provide input to assist in the control of autonomous mining equipment. Within the Woodlawn open pit, Fe- and Mg-chlorites and phengitic- micas associated with sulfide mineralisation were detected and mapped. Subsequent studies using a second generation face-mapping system demonstrated the direct detection of ore-grade materials for iron-ore and nickel laterite mining activities. Satisfactory and meaningful results were extracted from data that were collected under a variety of challenging conditions. However, these non-ideal climatic and operational conditions would be expected under most operational situations in a mine environment. Development of a system using artificial illumination, permitting night-time (and eventually underground) operation and elimination of atmospheric absorption effects is underway.

Mine haul road design at Bougainville Copper Limited has undergone significant changes since mine start-up. Selection of 95 tonne trucks and the subsequent replacement by 155 tonne units is discussed, with particular reference to haul conditions within the mine. Changes to haul road design and construction practices are detailed which have lead to improved standards and tyre life. INTRODUCTION Bougainville Copper Limited operates one of the largest copper mines in the world at Panguna, Bougainville Island, in the North Solomons group of Papua New Guinea. The mine commenced commercial operation in April, 1972 and current planned production is 198 000 tonnes of material per day, of which 115 000 tonnes is ore averaging 0.46% copper. Annual total planned production is 72 000 000 tonnes to yield approximately 150 000 tonnes of copper with significant quantities of gold and silver. The mine operations workforce now consists of national employees up to General Foreman level.

The year 2000 is not very far ahead - only five years. It should not be hard to forecast what will happen between now and then, because the technologies that will be in practical use then should all be at least in embryo existence now. There has been a historical trend for the mining industry to work ever more difficult and ever more marginal deposits. There are clearly a few exceptions and major discoveries, but the industry is becoming heavily dependent, at both the exploration and the mining stages, on technological innovation to retain acceptable profit margins. With the new exploration and mining technologies come requirements for additional computing support. Computing technology further allows the potential integration of a wide variety of different types of data to help the explorationist to build and test exploration strategies, or to help the miner to design and schedule mining operations.

A philosophy is presented that new graduates in mining and metallurgy should be equipped to use computers during their under- graduate courses, should be aware of the capabilities and costs of a wide range of computing equipment, and should receive sufficient stimulus to become involved in applying computers for the benefit of the mineral industry. A program is presented in which computer applications and "hands on" involvement with computers are integrated into the progressive stages of the undergraduate courses in Mining and Metallurgy. In this respect, the role of the computer is to assist the student by performing time consuming tasks, to demonstrate the industrial applications of computing, to extend the scope and complexity of the tutorial, assignment and project work which can be undertaken by the student, and to provide the essential first stepping stones toward continued useful involvement with computers during the graduate's working life.

Mine gas control is a major issue in most of the gassy underground coal mines, due to its direct impact on safety, production delays and cost of production. Analysis of the gas data, from different collieries in Australia showed that longwall gas emissions have increased substantially over the years. Simply increasing the number of goaf holes in the panel or decreasing goaf hole spacing seems not to be effective, in controlling high goaf gas emissions. A major research project has been undertaken by CSIRO in collaboration with mine sites to address this goaf gas control issue with the aim of developing effective and optimum goaf gas drainage strategies. The project has combined extensive field studies with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models, to characterise goaf gas flow patterns and develop effective gas control strategies. The research work specifically involved review of gas control issues at field sites, goaf gas monitoring, tracer gas tests, CFD simulations and extensive field trials. Field demonstration studies of the new optimum strategies have been conducted at two collieries in Australia. The project results have shown that the optimum strategies were highly successful, in improving the overall efficiency of goaf gas drainage systems, at both the field sites. Results of the goaf gas flow characterisation studies and field demonstration studies are summarised in this paper.

The Rivera Crystalline Island (RCI) is an erosional window of the intracontinental Parana Basin that outcrops in the Rivera Department, north of Uruguay. RCI is made up mainly by Precambrian granites, metasediments and granite-gneisses. This island is crosscut by a dextral transcurrent shear zone system, the Rivera Shear System (RSS). The bulk strain ellipsoid was defined by previous work and has allowed the evaluation of shear dynamics. The geometry of the shear system is made up of two shear directions: E-W (P-shear), which turn right to NW-SE direction (R-shear), leading to the development of extensional bends. The shear zone system was developed in brittle-ductile to brittle regimes, under temperature conditions compatible with greenschist facies metamorphism. The shear zones are marked by an intensive fracture cleavage development. Mylonites develop only in narrow, discontinuous higher strain zones. Internally, the shear zones are dominated by intrusive rocks, mainly granites, dacites and diorites. Hydrothermal alteration has been developed in several areas.The economic significance of RCI is given by several small gold deposits, which have been exploited since 1869. One major new gold mine is under development, the San Gregorio Gold Mine. This gold deposit is locally controlled by a dilatant site where R-shear turns right to P-shear. Mine lithologies were deeply altered by hydrothermal fluids in the dilatant structure. This work presents the lineament-structural analysis carried out to identify similar structural patterns in all RCI sites favourable to host other gold deposits. The exploration program also considered remote sensing, geology, geophysical and geochemical survey.
