Nickel laterite HPAL circuits are known for their complexity and have presented a large number of challenges to process engineers worldwide. An attitude commonly encountered by the author is that the beneficiation of the ore is relatively simple and that the difficult problems are in the realms of hydrometallurgy. On a number of occasions beneficiation has become the 'poor cousin' in the process design phase. Another common theme is that significant difficulties are encountered when beneficiation circuits are started up, invariably slowing the ramp-up of the remainder of the circuit. In some cases the problems impact on throughput for a long period and can require major rectification capital. The HPAL Ni laterite projects encountered each have their own set of beneficiation problems that need to be understood before an appropriate circuit can be designed. This paper will discuss a range of design issues including geometallurgy, ore characterisation through laboratory testing, the application of appropriate sizing and analytical procedures, the selection of appropriate unit operations, materials handling of plant feed and products and setting meaningful plant design requirements.

Better quality at lower cost is today's formula for remaining competitive in a world market. For an integrated steel company, high quality low cost steel production must originate before the blast furnace. In 1979, when U.S. Steel initiated a Quality Management Program throughout its steelmaking operations, efforts began at the coal, ore and flux mines. The objective was to improve the quality and reduce the variability of the critical parameters for steelmaking raw materials, to get the blast furnaces, and subsequently the melt shops, under optimum control. The general details of U.S. Steel's Quality Management Program are discussed and how it was used to promote the desired improvements in steelmaking raw materials. Some of the outstanding results obtained by the cooperative efforts between the mines and the steel plants are reported. The lessons learned by U.S. Steel were through upgrading existing operations and facilities. These principles should now be applied to new projects and the benefits of good quality management should commence from the time new projects are Commissioned.

The rate of precipitation of ferric iron as ammonium jarosite, NH4.Fe3(SO4)2(0H)6 from acidic solutions near 100¦C, was found to increase with weight of jarosite seed crystals, and with concentration of ammonium ion, but to decrease with increasing acidity. The particle size of the product crystals was larger at low sulphate concentrations and at high ammonium concentrations. The history and milestones in the evolution of support systems utilised in the mass-mined chrysotile mines of Shabanie and King are discussed in detail. The use of block caving, false footwall or sublevel caving mining methods brings with it some major support problems, which are exacerbated, in our low rock strength mining environments. The paper discusses the various support elements and systems that have been used successfully or otherwise in these operations. Some predictions for the future of rock reinforcing in our ground conditions are highlighted, in relation to geomechanics, levels of mechanisation and production risk analysis.

Many maintenance managers find it difficult to justify investments in maintenance improvement initiatives. In part, this is due to a tendency by mine managers to regard maintenance purely as a cost centre, and not as a process able to influence productive capacity and profit. It is also hindered by a lack of alignment between commonly used maintenance performance measures and key business drivers, and the lack of formal business training amongst maintenance professionals. With this in mind, a model to assist maintenance managers in evaluating the benefits of maintenance improvement projects was recently formulated. The model considers four cost saving dimensions. These are: 1. reduction in the cost of unplanned repairs and maintenance,2. increased or accelerated production and/or sales,3. spares inventory reduction, and4. reduction in over-investment in physical assets and operating costs. This paper discusses the application of this model and a number of numerical examples are given to justify investments in maintenance improvement projects having varying objectives.

Iron ore mining is a major source of export income for Australia. However with the decreasing reserves of high-grade, low-phosphorus hematite ore, there is mounting pressure to provide consistent mineralogical ore grade. Enhanced 3D characterisation and modelling are crucial to respond to these exigent requirements. To tackle this problem a revolutionary mine-based, imaging system (based on Visible Near Infrared û Short Wave Infrared reflectance spectroscopy û VNIR-SWIR) has been developed. This innovative, CSIRO-built prototype produces mineralogical maps that will have a major impact on ore grade characterisation. Australian iron ore companies will benefit immensely by pioneering this emerging and unique mining technology. The significance of VNIR-SWIR reflectance spectroscopy is well demonstrated with field portable spectrometers and airborne hyperspectral systems. At the mine-scale level, this newly developed imaging system will allow accurate and objective mineralogical mapping of mine faces and benches with very closely spaced sampling. These spectral mineral maps will improve deposit delineation and bring accurate and objective ore grade characterisation that will minimise drilling and enhance ore recovery. This will in turn lead to cost saving and better long-term block model planning. This system will also improve safety for mine geologists in providing mineralogical information at a distance, avoiding the need for any close contact with the mine face. The mine imaging concept is a logical response to the industry need for automatic and objective tools for sustainable and future mining practices.

An integral part of the Brisbane Suburban Railway Electrification involved the relining, refurbishment and track lowering in the Roma Street, Brunswick Street and Gloucester Street double track tunnels. The design and the construction procedures had to satisfy the Queensland Railways electrification clearance and track standards and the requirements of maintaining track services through the tunnels during work. Refurbishing of the tunnel linings was carried out to extend the life of the tunnels.

The permeability coefficient is an essential parameter for the study of seepage flow in fractured rock mass. This paper discusses the feasibility and application value of using readily available RQD (rock quality index) data to estimate mine water inflow and grouting quantity. Firstly, the influence of different fracture frequencies on permeability in a unit area was explored by combining numerical simulation and experiment, and the relationship between fracture frequencies and pressure and flow velocity at the monitoring point in fractured rock mass was obtained. Then, the stochastic function generation program was used to establish the flow analysis model in fractured rock mass to explore the relationship between flow velocity, pressure and analyse the universal law between fracture frequency and permeability. The concepts of fracture width and connectivity are introduced to modify the permeability calculation formula and grouting formula. Finally, based on the on-site grouting water control case study, the rock mass quality index is used to estimate the mine water inflow and the grouting quantity. The results show that it is feasible to estimate the fracture frequency and then calculate the permeability coefficient by RQD. The relationship between fracture frequency and RQD and the relationship between structure surface frequency and permeability follow an exponential function. The calculation results are in good agreement with the field monitoring results, which verifies the rationality of the calculation method. The relationship between the rock mass RQD index and the rock mass permeability established in this paper can be used to invert the mechanical parameters of the rock mass or to evaluate the permeability and safety of the rock mass, which is of great significance to the prediction of mine water inflow and the safety evaluation of water inrush disaster management.

"This paper discusses the successful use of bituminous geomembranes (BGMs) in mining applications since their development in 1974. It explains and illustrates the structure of a BGM composite, which is a geomembrane manufactured by impregnating a polyester geotextile with a compound of bitumen, elastomer and filler. Examples of applications of BGMs in the mining industry are also presented in the following contexts.Storage of solid waste: storage of mining waste at mines in Canada heap leach pads in France, Peru, Chile and Turkey at the base of a mining waste landfill in Brazil capping of solid mining waste in Chile and Canada temporary capping of mining stockpiles in Australia (with possible reuse of the BGM for other works).Examples of the application of BGMs for the storage of liquid waste in mining containment reservoirs in Canada, Guatemala and Peru will also be given.For each example given, reasons are supplied that supported the choice of BGMs by the clients and consultants, drawn from the following advantages of the BGM:BGMs have excellent puncture strength, due to the internal polyester reinforcement, as well as excellent ultraviolet resistance. This often eliminates the need for a cushion geotextile or cover soil over the BGM.BGMs have a very long life expectancy, in excess of 300 years, in subsoil conditions (Breul et al, 2004).BGMs can be installed in very harsh climatic conditions. They are suitable for high wind environments as their heavy mass per square metre makes them resistant to wind uplift. The low coefficient of thermal expansion means that BGMs are suitable for installation in mines where very low or very high temperatures are expected. This reduces construction delays and allows for a quicker use of the mining facility.The fact that the BGM can be installed by the mine’s own workforce, after appropriate training from the BGM manufacturer, allows for a more flexible construction sequence on the mine.Ability of the BGM to connect to other materials such as concrete, steel, rock and other geomembranes that may be on the mine site.The technical advantages of a BGM enabled the engineering consultants to prepare solutions for their mining clients that had a lower environmental risk, had a faster completion schedule and were overall a cheaper option than with a polymeric geomembrane.CITATION:Breul, B and McIlwraith, R, 2015. Ventilation is part of all underground mine operations and is undertaken in order to introduce fresh, cool air to the workings and to remove stale, affected air. It is problematic to obtain efficient and accurate estimates of volume flow and static pressure in the installed operational configuration for the auxiliary axial flow fans.An empirical method was developed to estimate the static pressure and volume flow through a calibrated differential pressure port on axial flow fans. Prior to shipping, each fan is performance tested according to BS 848 (ISO 5801) to establish the fan performance curves. In addition to the standard required parameters captured to fully describe the performance, the differential pressure is measured across the fan rotor to enable correlation with the characteristic fan curve.The method was implemented on a ruggedised tablet PC platform. This compact platform is then used to calculate the volume flow rate from the differential pressure sensor measurement input via a USB port. The result is a real-time measurement of volume flow and operating point of the fan system. This can be used effectively in overall modelling of the mine auxiliary ventilation systems and calculation of system resistance could provide a health indication of the fan and duct system.CITATION:Ratner, G and Viviers, S, 2013. HISTORY Up until the late 1880's the mining industry acquired a considerable proportion of its capital needs from domestic sources. Exchanges were established wherever major new fields were opened and Ballarat, Bendigo, Charters Towers, Coolgardie, Kalgoorlie and Silverton all boasted active trading in mining shares. For much of the first half of this century there was only modest developments in the mining industry and its capital require- ments were correspondingly lower. RECENT EXPERIENCE The new mines of the sixties were, in many cases, characterised by their remote situation and their output of bulk commodities such as iron ore., coal and bauxite. Infra- structure costs were particularly high and the level of capital expenditure was of previously unheard of proportions.

Willemite (Zn2SiO4) is one of the main zinc carriers in several Neoproterozoic carbonate-hosted non-sulfide deposits ofNamibia and Zambia. Willemite commonly replaces sphalerite, but it may also replace the carbonate host rocks. Fluid inclusions, cathodoluminescence petrography and trace element geochemistry are crucial to distinguish between hypogene, high temperature and low temperature (possibly) supergene willemites. A global period of willemite mineralisation, extending from Cambrian to Lower Ordovician has been proposed for the southern hemisphere. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. Efficiently controlling foam/froth within mineral processing continues to pose a challenge to the mining sector. The foaming characteristics of aqueous solutions for two-phase systems of air/liquid are well-studied with theories and mechanisms proposed to describe and predict foam formation and stability. The types and structures of reagents that either promote or prevent foaming/froth formation and stability are well-defined in these studies and practiced across various applications. Three-phase systems of air/liquid/solid, such as froth from mineral slurries, however, pose a challenge with the presence of a large quantity of relatively fine mineral particles. Theories and mechanisms that rationalise the effects of chemical additives as a defoamer or foaming agent in aqueous can be applied as a general rule, but do not provide the most effective solution for mineral slurry systems. Silicone-based defoamers, particularly their O/W emulsions, have been widely and successfully used at various stages of mineral processing to efficiently control the mineral slurry foaming properties. However, their foaming control ability could be significantly impacted by different processing aids used during the upstream process. In a zinc-rich mineral system, a silicone-based defoamer starts losing the properties necessary to effectively control foaming in the leaching circuit when throughput is increased. In this study, the synergistic defoaming/anti-foaming effects from surfactants and silicone-based defoamers are discussed to effectively control foaming/froth in the zinc leaching circuit, even with lower total defoamer dosage. Improvements during mineral processing can also lead to a cleaner mineral grade by reducing waste.

Most mining dredges are adapted from canal/harbour dredges. Their automation and control systems are generally not designed for integrated mining operations. Consequently they have a number of limitations. This paper describes a new dredge control concept which paves the way for improved efficiency and increased production.

Detailed observations were made for two existing continuous miner and shuttlecar systems. A simple model for the shift average cycle consisted of three time components - delays, mining and transport. Cycle improvement and productivity improvement factors are derived and used to predict the theoretical improvement which the observed cycles could achieve. Various strategies of action ranging from short-term optimisation through to long-term planning for continuous haulage systems are evaluated. High potential for improvement is shown for a wide range of operating conditions. An overview is presented for systems, currently available or under active development, which can accept coal directly from continuous miners and offer continuous haulage to the surface. Systems are broadly classified as mechanical-roof mounted, mechanical-floor mounted and hydraulic transportation.

A small modification to current industrial practice should lead to better nickel powders for use in alloying, electroplating, and powder metallurgy. Nickel powder compacts sold for alloying are not always suitable for electroplating applications, since some presently used commercial powders will expand on sintering. Further, such nickel powders are unsuitable for use in the production of powder metal parts, because of expansion during heating of the near-net-shape preforms. Research in these laboratories has enabled the elimination of expansion, and led to techniques for the production of compacts suitable, in particular, for commercial use in both alloying and electroplating. The techniques include: powder pretreatment, cold pressing and sintering, hot pressing, and hot pressing and sintering. In this way compacts are readily prepared with densities of at least 93 per cent of solid nickel, and these, when used as anodes in Watts general purpose and bright baths, give both cathode current and plating efficiencies of 90-98 per cent.

This paper discusses considerations to be made for the selection of rock tunnelling machines, as opposed to drilling and blasting. A systematic approach is presented in terms of utilizing data frcm site investigations to accurately forecast machine performance for estimating and planning purposes and to help minimise associated risks. Useful rock index properties are identified, and correlations for predicting advance rates for roadheader and full face machines are presented together with a simple method of characteristing rock mass conditions for estimating machine utilization and the savings to be gained in support costs. Finally considerations for tunnelling in adverse ground, for advance probing and for large sized tunnels are outlined.
