Detailed studies of mineral paragenesis, isotope and trace-element geochemistry, and physical mineralogy at Mount Morgan are compatible with deductions by Geopeko Ltd geologists concerning field relationships in the mine area. Considered together, field and laboratory data suggest that the Mount Morgan deposit originated from a shallow, intrusive, acid volcanic dome similar to those which produced the Kuroko-type deposits in Japan. At Mount Morgan, however, interaction with sea water was much less, the sulphides were concentrated rather than forming a group of deposits, and only the throat of a breccia vent is pre- served, so that only the lowermost parts of Kuroko-type deposits can be compared with the Mount Morgan mine. A final difference lies in the presence at Mount Morgan of a quartz diorite adjacent to the ore. Mineralogical data are compatible with post-ore intrusion, possibly up an earlier volcanic fissure.

The cost of capital is the rate at which a project's cash flow should be discounted to obtain the Net Present Value. The cost of capital is a weighted average of both debt and equity funds of a company, on an after tax basis. Two methods are described for calculating a company's cost of equity, the Dividend Valu- ation Model and, more importantly, the Capital Asset Pricing Model. A worked example is presented where the cost of capital was obtain- ed for two resource companies. The application of the cost of capital was illustrated by way of a mining equipment replacement problem. The paper outlines refinements and problems that may be encountered with the use of the cost of capital, and concludes that it is an integral part of any project evaluation.

A pressurisation method with multiparallel fans has been adopted at HongLiuLin Coalmine to control the significant external air leakage through the goaf area of coalface 15207. Potential damaging effects of large external air leakage on a coalmine’s ventilation system are analysed according to the current air leakage status caused by the exploitation of shallow-covered coal seams. The use of pressure balanced ventilation to prevent external air leakage through goaf areas is introduced. The calculation of ventilation network of HongLiuLin Coalmine shows that the air resistance of an external air leakage branch through a goaf area and the air pressure drops from the intake slope to the working face can be adopted to determine the values of pressure to be increased by regulating fans and airflow controlling parameters of regulators. By investigating airflow requirements of the pressure-balanced area as well as the performances of the auxiliary fans currently used in the coalmine, the number of pressurisation fans needed is fixed. Truck/shovel operations constitute 50 - 60 per cent of the cost of open pit mining operations. Mining companies, therefore, are constantly seeking to close the gap between actual truck/shovel productive capacity and maximum potential truck/shovel capacity. This paper analyses the performance of a mixed truck/shovel fleet in an open cut coal mine in Australia. It analyses operating delays, and proposes a novel graphical means of determining truck-limited or shovel-limited operations. A goal seeking algorithm is advanced in order to maximise truck/shovel match factors (MF) and hence optimise fleet productivity.

The Mt Wright Underground Mine is located near the town of Ravenswood in North Queensland and is operated by Carpentaria Gold – a wholly owned subsidiary of Resolute Mining Limited. Following the evolution of the mine plan through a number of stages, the ‘sublevel shrinkage (SLS) with continuous fill’ mining method was implemented in 2010 to extract the Mt Wright orebody. The production front in this mining method is similar to a sublevel cave (SLC) operation; however, backfill is placed into the top of the production zone as opposed to requiring the overlying strata to cave.Continuous fill to replace the void created by extracting the ore was required to manage the potential risks associated with the proximity of infrastructure to the footwall, associated long-term stability and air blast potential due to the limited ‘cavability’ of the material within the cave zone. The available fill material was sourced from a disused waste dump from a previous open pit operation, which introduced further technical and economic risks associated with dilution from ‘no grade’ broken material. Procedures and processes to manage these risks have been incorporated into the operation of the mine.Despite encountering a number of challenges, the SLS method has been in use for approximately three years at Mt Wright and has proven to be viable economically, technically and operationally. Feasibility studies in the development of mining projects are fundamental to most investment decisions. It is important that the issues addressed and the degree of detail involved in feasibility studies are consistent with the investment decisions to be taken. Emphasis should be placed on a thorough analysis of critical project parameters prior to detailed investigations being undertaken into other activities which are not relevant to the decisions at hand. Therefore, the issues to be decided upon should be influenced significantly by the stage of development of the project and by the reliability of technical and financial information used in the study. Some of the more critical parameters of feasibility studies are commodity prices, inflation rates and discount rates. Advice is given on the selection of these inputs and also on their application in the feasibility study as the project progresses through its various development stages. The use of monitors to assess equipment performance is carried out on a routine basis in many industries. The benefits gained through process control in knowing exactly how the equipment is working far outweigh the initial capital costs of the monitor. In the mining industry several dragline monitors have been developed and installed on equipment through out the world, but to date none has been fully accepted by the industry. This paper describes the use of a sophisticated monitoring system which incorporates an onboard processor to assess both dragline and blast performance. The results of a case study are presented and an indication of the potential of the monitoring system to optimise mine production is given.

Pounamu is a MSori collective term for semi-precious stone scientifically referred to as nephrite, semi-nephrite, jade or bowenite (tangiwai) that is composed predominantly of metamorphic tremolite in a felted, fibrous texture. It is Aotearoa/New ZealandÆs icon mineral material. Ownership and management of this important taonga (treasure) has been vested in Te Rnnanga o NgSi Tahu as part of a Treaty of Waitangi settlement process. Increasing demand from the tourist, jewellery, fashion and sculpture industries, as well as cultural renaissance, has placed pressure on the pounamu resource. This had led to nephrite importation, allegations that foreign material is being marketed falsely as New Zealand pounamu, and wider concerns over the potential for exploitation/over-use and theft of genuine pounamu.   Research is underway to characterise different pounamu source regions by defining their ægenetic fingerprintÆ. The geological age and radiogenic isotopic composition of Aotearoa/New Zealand pounamu is distinguished from other nephrite jade occurrences overseas, due to relatively young cooling ages. Strontium isotope ratios distinguish pounamu from different source areas within Aotearoa/New Zealand (whakapapa), with signatures reflecting the host terrane rocks (their family) and their position in a sequence of metamorphic events (their generation). The research will provide a tool for archaeological research, trademark and resource protection.   Mineral resource assessments normally aim to define the total volume/tonnage present, which is generally assumed to be finite, applying drilling and geostatistical modelling. Pounamu resource assessment requires a different approach, as its intrinsic value is insufficient to warrant modern exploration methods (eg drilling, geophysics). Pounamu is only known to occur at a restricted few in-situ (hard-rock) localities. It is primarily found in transported (alluvial) detrital river and glacial outwash deposits, where collectable material has short term variability due to erosion and transport processes. A new methodology is being developed aiming to define: +        the total resource present, +        the relative rate of change in the availability of that resource through erosion and other geological processes, +        active areas where new material is likely to be exposed (eg by erosion), and +        appropriate extraction rates for sustainable use. The methodology will provide a holistic overview of the resource in different regions of Aotearoa/New Zealand, and may be applicable to other transient or restricted natural resources that occur within geologically active environments (eg supplies of driftwood on beaches).

The purpose of this research was to study the calcination of lead-zinc flotation tailings from the Angouran lead and zinc flotation plant in Iran as a pre-concentration step prior to hydrometallurgical processing of the oxidised tailings. There is an abundance of these tailings in the Angouran region and making use of these tailings would help preserve national wealth and also reduce the serious problems of environmental pollution caused by the tailings. At the optimal conditions of calcining at 750 - 800¦C for 45 minutes, the sample showed a mass loss of about 19 per cent. Mineralogical analyses showed that under these conditions the carbonate minerals including smithsonite (ZnCO3), calcite (CaCO3) and dolomite (Ca Mg (CO3)2) decomposed to their respective oxides. Hemimorphite (Zn4Si2O7 (OH)2.H2O) converted into willemite (Zn2SiO4) and this transformation postponed the formation of silica gel in the leach solution. The grade of zinc increased from 22.20 per cent to 29 per cent. These mineralogical changes resulted in desirable reactions in the acid leach process.

"The development of a predictive geometallurgical model is a multidisciplinary and iterative task that involves both discovery and integration aspects. In this paper, the authors discuss the concepts of geometallurgical modelling in terms of the underlying relationships that are used to connect geology, metallurgy and economic value, and how the early-stage preparation of a spatial geometallurgical model enhances project value and provides a sound basis for future studies and test work programs.Hot Chili’s (copper-gold-molybdenum) Productora Project, which is located in northern Chile, is a porphyry-copper style deposit that can be exploited using open pit mining and preparation of a saleable concentrate from fresh ore, as well as heap leaching, solvent extraction and electrowinning (SX-EW) extraction of copper from oxide ores. To enhance project value in the Productora prefeasibility study (PFS), Hot Chili developed a geometallurgical model that was used to predict the process responses of both sulfide and oxide ores. The Productora model incorporates test results from mineralogical, metallurgical and comminution testing, as well as other studies completed on a suite of samples collected from the many geological domains of the deposit.Using Bond Work Index and Abrasion Index proxies in the geometallurgical model, Hot Chili estimated the variability of sulfide ore throughput and comminution costs. Heap leach acid consumption in oxide ore was estimated from drill hole calcium concentrations. The model was then used in mine scheduling to identify high and low throughput or high and low acid ore zones so that the processing of these zones could be advanced or deferred to improve net present value (NPV). Additionally, the cost benefits of preparing an early-stage geometallurgy model were quantified through a comparison to a conventional model that was based on test work averages.CITATION:King, G S and Macdonald, J L, 2016. On 23 May 1977 the Hon Mr George Gair announced an amalgamation of the present Ministry of Energy Resources, the New Zealand Electricity Department and the Mines Department. Hopefully it will prove to be the solution of many national problems in energy planning and policy making, in energy distribution and use, and energy discovery and production. The name of this new giant is the Ministry of Energy which gives a firm indication of its future direction. For those amongst us involved with mineral energy resources the establishment of this new department must be encouraging. For those amongst us who are involved in non-energy side of the mineral industry it is the very opposite. The loss of the Mines Department a year short of its centenary is a loss for the mineral industry without a doubt - but how much of a loss?

Many of the tailings storage facilities (TSFs) in Australia are upstream raised facilities for which the consolidation of the hydraulically deposited tailings is essential to the stability of the TSF. While much operational consideration is given to limiting the rate of rise of TSFs through careful management of deposition rates to achieve desired consolidation, the rate of embankment raise construction (RoC) is often not given the same level of consideration. Loading the tailings at too high a rate during construction could lead to upstream and potentially downstream failure of the embankment. The Tailings Retention System (TRS) at the BHP Olympic Dam Mine comprises upstream raised TSFs that are continually raised with a zoned embankment. Improving on 20 years of successful embankment raising, there was a desire to understand the acceptable RoC under varying operating conditions and assess upper construction limits to improve operational risk management. To understand the RoC, trial embankment raise construction pads were constructed at different rates and the pore pressure response of the underlying tailings material was monitored. The pore pressure data were used to calibrate the permeability and consolidation characteristics of the tailings in a finite element model (FEM) that replicated a typical embankment raise. The rate of material placement, location of the phreatic surface and construction load were varied in the FEM until failure was initiated. The results were presented as a period (in days) over which the various zones for the embankment raise could be safely constructed. The results indicate direct sensitivity to the depth to the phreatic surface prior to commencement of an embankment raise, as well as the point of application of the construction traffic load. This paper presents the study approach, challenges experienced in modelling the construction methodology, the study results and their relevance in the improvement of understanding of RoC at the BHP Olympic Dam TRS.

Recent work has shown that, in at least some instances of regional metamorphism, metamorphic diffusion has been restricted to such relatively minute distances (of the order of 1.0 mm and much less), that there is no clear, direct evidence of prograde metamorphic mineral reactions, and that metamorphic equilibrium does not appear to have been attained through even very small domains.A number of stratiform orebodies and their immediate metapelitic environments exhibit very large, seemingly "disequilibrium", assemblages of regional metamorphic index materials. One such, in north-eastern Australia, includes laumontite, prehnite, chamosite, stilpnomelane and related hydrous iron silicates, primary chlorite, sericite-muscovite, epidote, actinolite, biotite, almandine, andradite, metamorphic hornblende and clinopyroxene, scapolite, staurolite and sillimanite, all within a 20 metres length of a single diamond drill core. In this and several related occurrences it appears that metamorphism has involved very small scale in situ transformation of pre-existing materials rather than large-scale diffusion and reaction, and hence that the observed metamorphic minerals have probably been derived directly from precursor materials of sedimentary/diagenetic origin.It is concluded that the fluctuating seafloor interplay between warm, acid, concentrated hydrothermal waters with cold, alkaline, dilute seawater during stratiform ore formation, together with diagenetic processes, leads to the formation of a wide range of clay, chlorite, mixed-layer clay and clay/chlorite, and zeolite precursor materials and hence, later, to the complex assemblages of metamorphic minerals closely associated with some stratiform ores. Commonly included in highly localized assemblages of this kind are various minerals which, in conventional regional metamorphic studies, are generally regarded as indicating widely different grades of metamorphism.

PT Freeport Indonesia is completing the first underground gyratory crusher excavation at their Deep Mill Level Zone (DMLZ) mine located in the mountains of Jayawijaya, District of West Papua, Indonesia. DMLZ is an underground block cave mine with an expected output of 80 000?t/d and a scheduled production start in 2015.In order to deliver crushed ore to the mill through the existing conveyor belt, the DMLZ block cave mine will construct two 1000?kW 1.6?×?2.3?m gyratory crushers with their own respective ore flow conveying systems underground. Each crusher is composed of top, middle, and bottom chambers with an ore bin. This system includes a series of high capacity conveyors approximately 5 km in length including transfer stations and support facilities.The development methodology required a combination of lateral development by jumbo drilling machines and vertical development by mechanised raise climbers (MRC) due to the complexity of the chamber design.This paper will discuss the project scope, design and development methodology, ground conditions, innovative survey controls, and the challenges faced due to the remote location.CITATION:Hernandez, E, Kusumohastuti, W and Agustian, I, 2014. A new concept central to the search for sample correctness is presented. In spite of its simplicity, this concept has already unknowingly formed the implicit basis of already established, current limiting rules of use for certain types of samplers, used as mere examples in this paper. Once explicitly enunciated though, this fundamental principle gives immediate, simple and new practical rules for the design of predictably correct sampling equipment and for sampling device auditing. Examples of application are offered as an illustration, including an earlier, important, albeit unpublished, idea found in Pierre GyÆs earlier works.

The University of Wollongong was named University of the Year 2000, for its work in preparing students for the e-world. Computer facilitated learning is being introduced into subjects throughout the engineering course. First year mining engineering students are introduced to computers, e-communication, using the UniversityÆs web based information system, and web based subject delivery. Mining engineering students in the mid-years of the course use programming languages and numerical computation software such as MATLAB, while students in the final years use a range of commercially available professional engineering software such as TALPAC. Most of these subjects are offered as part of the UniversityÆs Learning Online program, co-ordinated by its Centre for Educational Development and Interactive Resources (CEDIR). Learning Online subjects are delivered using the Web Course Tools (WebCT) environment. WebCT allows all resources to be accessed through the web, allows email communication between lecturer and student, and allows discussion groups for the exchange of ideas. Students can submit their assignments through WebCT and receive immediate feedback. This paper describes how WebCT has been used to deliver a first year engineering computing subject, mid-year numerical computation subjects, a mining economics subject and mine planning subjects.

The application of new and currently practised mining techniques in new areas and at greater depths necessitates considerable and immediate research effort. This effort is aimed at identifying the factors which make a particular method suitable and economically viable in a given geological, structural and operational environment. These factors, together with greatly enhanced knowledge of a deposit at the exploration and planning stage, allow selection of the most appropriate and efficient mining method in a new area such that coal resource recovery is maximised in a cost effective manner. Current research and future requirements for research into mining methods and associated equipment and mine services are reviewed.

The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and the Australian Mining Industry Council are concerned that a sufficient number of able young people receive an adequate level of professional training for the mineral industry. A Joint Committee on Education has been formed to pursue these objectives. At a time of strong growth in the industry it is most important to forecast the demand for people, so that the educational authorities will be able to provide adequate facilities. The factors to be considered in fore- casting the demand for professional staff are set out, and the proposed method of assessment is outlined.

Constructing upstream raises with tailings is an accepted and cost-effective practice in Western Australia, where the climatic conditions are favourable, desiccation (and hence overconsolidation) occurs rapidly due to air drying and there is a perceived low seismic risk. This is in contrast to many other settings, where there is either a positive water balance, high seismicity or a combination of both. In recent times, there has been an increased focus on seismicity in areas of Australia that have historically been considered to be of low seismic risk. The increased focus is driven by two recently published documents used by tailings practitioners and increased awareness from corporate entities, particularly those with mines in high-seismicity regions such as South-East Asia and South America (particularly Chile).The increased awareness has resulted in increased rigour being applied to seismic design of tailings storage facilities (TSFs) in general, and particularly upstream-raised TSFs. This paper compares the results of a seismic stability assessment for an upstream-raised TSF located in the Goldfields region of Western Australia, which has historically been considered a low seismic area, with a seismic stability assessment carried out for a crossvalley TSF containing similar tailings but located in a high-rainfall, high-seismic setting in South-East Asia. The influence of the adopted design earthquake values on the results of the assessments and the potential impact of the maximum design earthquake (MDE) on the design approach is presented for both cases. The results indicate that although the Western Australian site is located in an area thought to have low seismic risk, the screening level analyses suggest that the MDE could result in liquefaction of the tailings materials. Not surprisingly, liquefaction was also indicated for the South-East Asian site. The outcomes of the assessment are also presented.CITATION:Chapman, P J and Williams, D A, 2015.
