Giving the keynote address in the final session of a conference dealing with closely related topics has a disadvantage in that much of what can be said has been said. It also has an advantage, however, because it presents the speaker with the opportunity to integrate and analyse the material presented by the various speakers. I would like to look to the near future in Aust- ralia and the United States of America, to the risks, problem areas, and changes of a rapidly evolving post-industrial era-an era we are begin- ning to experience where industry no longer `calls the tune'. We miners have been quick to point out and emphasize, that ours is a `high-risk' industry in the world of business and commerce. Yet, clearly those who have survived, and been successful, have learned to anticipate and cope with risk and change. This ability has been a distinguishing feature of the industry's leaders who, in market studies and commodity selection, exploration and development, mine planning, metallurgical pro- cessing, and general administration and operation 1. identify areas of risk or inevitable change, 2. analyse, test and quantify those factors of risk or change, and 3. design methods, systems, equipment to elim- inate, moderate, or control or economically compensate for predicted risks or changes.

Pyrite, chalcopyrite and mixed sulfide samples, with and without quartz (5 wt per cent S), were subjected to column leaching to mimic natural weathering (cyclic wetting and drying). The pH and SO4 2- concentration of the column effluent was measured over a period of 78 weeks. The pH of the pyrite-only containing column rapidly decreased and remained under pH 4 after 12 weeks of leaching. The pH calculated assuming a 2:1 ratio of H + generation and SO4 2- release was slightly lower than that measured. However, a reduced H + to SO4 2- ratio of 1:1 is predicted if the release of aqueous Fe 2+ is assumed rather than the formation of Fe(OH)3. The pH of all columns containing only chalcopyrite or a 1:1 mole ratio of chalcopyrite and pyrite remained at or above pH 5 for the duration of the leach even though significant SO4 2- was released. One column containing the same initial surface area of pyrite and chalcopyrite but only approximately 0.10 the mole fraction of S as chalcopyrite maintained a pH of greater than five for the first 56 weeks of leaching and showed sporadic acid production thereafter. It is well established that oxidation of chalcopyrite results in a surface layer of polysulfide material. It is the formation of polysulfide that neutralises the acid produced on S oxidation through to SO4 2-. Hence where polysulfide formation occurs extensively on chalcopyrite the resulting solution pH decrease will be less than that based on SO4 2- production. The oxidation rate of sulfide minerals increases with decreasing pH and hence acid formation via sulfide oxidation to SO4 2- causes the subsequent oxidation rate to increase. The addition of calcite (CaCO3)to a pyrite column not only neutralises the acid formed but also decreases the rate of release of sulfate to solution by a factor of approximately 30. This is also the case where chalcopyrite is present mixed with pyrite. The rate of release of sulfate from the mixed sulfide mineral columns (after the initial release of the sulfate already present) was between one-fifth and one-tenth that in the absence of chalcopyrite.

At 4 MPa gas pres ure and 30°C the sorptive capacity of 10 selected Australian dried coal ranges from 17 to 23 m3/tonne of CH4 and 27 to 36 m3/tonne of CO2. Values for moist coals are about 25 per cent less. At 20°C, sorptive capacities are about 18 per cent greater. No clear relationship between coal rank and sorptive capacity was established.The permeability of coal to gas is dramatically reduced by progressive hydrostatic confinement. No single 'permeability' for a coal can be established because of relative affinities of coals and the gases (Ar, CH4 and CO2) used in experiments. Bedding plane permeability is significantly greater than permeability normal to bedding. Dependent on gas/coal combinations, permeabilities without confinement ranged from 150 to 0.05 millidarcies, and with 8 MPa hydrostatic confinement from 1.0 to 0.001 md. Generally, permeability is increased by reduction in temperature, and reduced by increase in moisture as one changes from Ar through CH4 to CO2. In retrospect, it is preferable to ubject permeability sample to 8 MPa hydrostatic stress only once, because changes occur in the samples and it is difficult to use other gases successively.The initial rate of desorption, DP, does not appear to be a reliable index of proneness to instantaneou outbursts for Australian coals.The methods used for determining quantitative gas-coal properties appear suitable and reliable for testing other coals.

Incorporating industry best practice waste rock management methods can be a relatively straight forward task when preparing management documentation, such as an acid and metalliferous drainage management plan (AMDMP). However, a key difficulty is the incorporation of industry best practice methods that are practical and non-compromising on their purpose from a scientific standpoint. The second key difficulty is the implementation of these practical methods as various operational groups/departments are typically relied upon to execute and take ownership of different tasks or procedures.One approach to overcoming these difficulties is to develop an AMD Operations Manual (AMDOM) that:•Incorporates, where practicable and without compromising scientific merit, existing processes that those groups/departments ultimately responsible for the execution of the management action are familiar with; and•Provides standalone, simplistic, and easy to follow procedures for site personnel. The purpose of the standalone operations manual is to ensure site personnel who are responsible for undertaking specific procedures, have clear, step-by-step instructions for an individual procedure, without requiring interpretation and understanding of the more comprehensive AMDMP.In adopting a best practice approach to waste rock management for their iron ore mine in Western Australia’s Pilbara region, Roy Hill developed an AMD Management System that is comprised of both an AMDMP and an AMDOM that are connected through adaptive management processes. Iron ore in the Pilbara Region of Western Australia varies in composition giving iron ore a range of densities. An accurate density figure of the material leads to accurate calculations of production throughput. Density studies of two separate iron ore mines were conducted in the Pilbara. Procedures and results are reported here.The Pilbara Region of Western Australia has a number of iron ore operations. Two mines have conducted density studies of their materials. The purpose for the studies was to determine an accurate in situ bulk density that could be applied to volume and tonnage calculations of the operation. It was identified that density was one culprit causing calculation variations. Density is an important figure used to estimate ore reserves, equipment requirements, production rates and indirectly costs and sales revenue. One study was conducted at Rio TintoÆs Robe River Mine based near the town of Pannawonica. Its Mesa J orebody is currently being mined and is a low-grade deposit of goethite and hematite (Burnham, 2003). A separate study was conducted at BHP BillitonÆs Yarrie Mine situated north of Newman and east of Pardoo. Its orebody consists of high grade formed by a supergene enrichment of cherty material and a burial metamorphism to produce hematite (Richardson, 2002). The method used to determine density was by large-scale samples using the pre-mining in situ volume of the material and the weight in tonnes after mining.

HORWOOD wrote: In view of the difficulty of obtaining accurate results when using plumb lines in shafts, owing to the effect of currents of air, the writer, over M years ago, devised a method of transferring oearings from the surface to, the underground workings independently of plumb lines.An attachment was procured for the theodolite consisting of a 45° prism enabling a view of a fine line stretched across the shaft at the surface to be observed from the bottom of the shaft. The instrument was set up in such a position that.a view of the portion of the surface line could be obtained as close as possible to the shaft timbers.By candle light signals an assistant at the surface moved his line so that the portion close to the side or end of the shaft coincided with the cross wires of the theodolite. The theodolite was then swung to enable the crosswires to traverse the surface line. It was a simple matter to transfer the bearing of the surface line to points in the drive extending from the shaft. Similarly the relation of the bearing of the surface line to the shaft, with which a connection was intended, was easily obtained.The success of this method was demonstrated at Broken Hill in making connections many hundreds of feet from the shafts from which these were driven.

The Queensland Government, via the special purpose company vehicle û City North Infrastructure Pty Ltd û is currently developing BrisbaneÆs Airport Link underground toll road and Northern Busway (Windsor to Kedron).Airport Link is a predominantly underground toll road planned between BrisbaneÆs northern suburbs, the airport and the Brisbane Central Business District (CBD) frame. The Northern Busway forms part of BrisbaneÆs expanding busway network, sections of which will be jointly delivered with Airport Link. Airport Link will connect the North-South Bypass Tunnel, Inner City Bypass and local road network at Bowen Hills to the northern arterials of Gympie Road and Stafford Road at Kedron and Sandgate Road and the East-West Arterial in the cityÆs north-east. The Northern Busway is a two-lane, two-way bus-only roadway proposed to connect the existing Inner Northern Busway at Herston with Windsor, Lutwyche, Kedron, Chermside, Aspley and Bracken Ridge. Airport Link and Northern Busway (Windsor to Kedron) is one of the largest infrastructure projects planned in the first phase of the State GovernmentÆs South East Queensland Infrastructure Plan and Program. The paper will provide an overview of the projects, including a discussion on the technical and environmental aspects as well as the procurement of the Airport Link as a public private partnership.

In early-1995, the Bindura Nickel Corporation commissioned a pressure leach plant at its Smelter and Refinery complex located in Bindura, Zimbabwe. The novel pressure leach process was developed by Sherritt to treat the nickel-copper sulphide residue produced from the original atmospheric leach circuit. The process extracts essentially all the nickel from the nickel-copper sulphide residue under non-oxidising acid pressure leach conditions, thereby producing an upgraded copper sulphide residue suitable for smelting and refining to electrolytic copper. The commissioning of the pressure leach plant was relatively smooth and design conditions were achieved within six weeks of operation. This paper presents a brief description of the process development and the plant design, followed by highlights of the plant start-up activities and summary of the plant performance.

The correct selection of equipment to use in a mine is a problem which constantly faces the mining engineer. In some cases a wide choice of equipment with different operating characteristics is available. If this equipment is to be used to assist in moving the ore it may be possible to build a computer simulation model to predict how it will perform. Typical problems that lend themselves to this type of analysis are presented. The computer models are constructed using a recent form of the GPSS computer language, namely GPSS/PC for the personal computer. This language allows the programmer to construct models in a very short time and at a low cost. Of great importance is the easy way in which it is possible to change the models to answer any of the "what if?" questions the engineer may pose.

This paper describes the new legislative regime that will apply to the regulation of the minerals industry in New Zealand.The reform of New Zealands minerals legislation was initiated in January 1988 when the Minister for the Environment, Rt Hon Geoffrey Palmer, announced the Governments intention to review all the major laws governing New Zealands resources. The Resource Management Bill is scheduled for to the House in December 1989 and its date of enactment is scheduled for June 1990.With some matters still to be determined (at the time of writing), this paper cannot be a definitive review and description of the new legislation, it is instead an attempt to outline the major features of the Bill, to date, that are seen as important to the mining industry.

The Barrick Gold Granny Smith underground operation located at the Wallaby deposit is currently in a transition period from a near surface operation in ramp up mode to a fully operational deep mining operation with annual production exceeding 1 Mt/a. A key element in this process has been the project execution of the Wallaby Deeps project from initial scoping study in 2007 to the major production component of the Wallaby operation by 2013.The Wallaby Deeps project serves as an example of how an ongoing detailed study program can be integrated into a day to day mining operation assessing risk and mining application in a perceived challenging narrow vein geotechnical environment prior to mining. A detailed study phase to feasibility level is carried out prior to the mining each zone of Wallaby with mining approval only granted on study completion with full justification.A central element in this process is an optimisation study that utilising the Mineable Shape Optimiser (MSO) and Schedule Optimisation Tool (SOT) software tools developed by AMIRA Ltd PRIMO research project is used to carry out an NPV value based option study. This optimisation process being then tempered to reality by a predefined practicality assessment process utilising extensive peer review by operational and study team members as well as industry experts.Other challenges facing the Wallaby Deeps project include the requirement to maintain the ramp up production profile to full production by 2012 without disruption but with pressures of an ongoing geological resource to reserve conversion program essential for the study process and mining approvals and also development rate achievement.To date these challenges are being met with integrated planning and the value of the study program itself. Subsidence issues associated with historic mine workings have highlighted the need for enhanced geotechnical management of the Martha pit over the remaining life. In conjunction with a detailed analysis of pit slope issues a comprehensive geotechnical management plan has been developed at Martha and is being used as the basis for development of similar plans in other Newmont operations.   This paper covers the geotechnical issues facing the Martha operation and the development and application of the management plan.

Adopting environmentally acceptable practices in New Zealand is a crucial requirement for mineral wealth development. Recent planned expansions in the coal industry have increasingly placed mining in the media spotlight. A lack of appropriate national environmental guidelines has resulted in inconsistent responses and assessments of current and prospective mine sites. Such inconsistencies have lead to delays in decisions on developing economic mineral deposits that may have only minor short-term impacts, and have also allowed unacceptable environmental management practices to continue elsewhere.   A research collaboration between CRL Energy, Landcare Research, University of Canterbury and University of Otago aims to provide regulator groups and the mining industry with a unified approach to the requirements of the Resource Management Act 1991, which is the legislation that predominantly drives the nationÆs environmental policies and guidelines. The tangible outcome of this research programme will be guidelines for an integrated decision-making framework based upon robust multidisciplinary science. The result of this unified process will facilitate the development of viable mineral deposits and prevent excessive environmental impacts.   The framework will be derived from a synthesis of four objectives. Objective 1 identifies potential water quality impact. This objective is based on a targeted geochemical study of the lithology and waterways of the West Coast and Southland. Objective 2 categorises the degree of impacts on the ecology of receiving aquatic ecosystems and determines the processes that drive aquatic ecosystem recovery. Objective 3 identifies best strategies to sufficiently manage impacted ecosystems, and to prevent future unacceptable impacts. Objective 4 combines the findings of Objectives 1 - 3 into a standard decision-making framework. The development of this framework development will include wide consultation with representatives of the mining industry and regulator groups. It is anticipated that this multidisciplinary approach will provide a robust and coherent, standardised system that will assist in achieving industry and environmental targets.

The current study integrates hydrogeochemical and stable isotope results to investigate the sources and evolution of acid mine drainage at the historic Mount Morgan gold mine in Queensland, including the controlling factors and mechanisms of sulfate formation. The open pit and seepage sumps contain acid-sulfate waters and show elevated Al, Cu, Fe, Mn, Pb and Zn values. Samples collected from the Dee River bordering the mine site are less acidic, with lower concentrations of dissolved metals that gradually attenuate downstream from the mine. Concentrated acid mine waters has lead to formation of efflorescences consisting mainly of hydrous Fe-sulfates. The results of the ongoing isotope analyses on water samples show distinctive grouping of the data. The range of the sulfur isotope values for dissolved sulfate in samples from the open pit and sumps (d34S = 2.1 to 3.0 per mil) are similar to those of sulfides in the Main Pipe mineralisation (d34S = - 0.2 to 2.8 per mil). The lack of fractionation between sulfides and sulfate indicates that intermediate oxidation states of sulfur are not significant and makes this technique a useful tracer to identify the sources of sulfate. The Dee River samples, on the other hand, have heavier sulfur isotopes (d34S = 2.8 to 5.0 per mil). These samples may contain dissolved sulfate from æinternal sourcesÆ in the river basin, show local bacterial reduction or indicate a simple mixing trend. Further isotope analyses including oxygen isotopes of dissolved sulfates will enhance the interpretations.

Mr. P. F. THOMPSON said this matter was one of very great importance to producers of lead. His association with the matter was that he happened to be the Institute representative on the Committee of the Standards Association of Australia charged with formulating a standard for chemical lead, that is, lead used in technical chemistry for acid chambers and the like. The British standard had this test incorporated in it, but those on the committee felt that it should not be included in the specification. The main objection was that in an accelerated corrosion test one was endeavouring to do in a few seconds what in natural conditions would take years; and it was now being recognised that such tests were of little value in assessing the corrosive properties of a metal.The flash point test was carried out with boiling hot strong sulphuric acid; but no chemical manufacturer would be likely to use such in contact with lead. There were many factors such as the formation of steam, the chemical reduction of sulphuric acid, the evolution of hydrogen, the catalytic effect of the surface lead, affecting this test, other than the presence of the segregated impurities upon which this test throws the onus of the whole imperfection of the lead. Mr. Russell had shown that lead which had stood the test of time often gave a low flash point. They were endeavouring to find rapid methods of estimating minute amounts of the more important impurities, which would eliminate the labour and expense of a full analysis.Mr. H. St. J. DeGrussa Copper Mine, resource status 10.2 Mt at 5.7 per cent Cu, 2.1 g/t Au (Sandfire Resources, 2013), commenced concentrate production through its 1.5 Mt/a conventional copper flotation processing plant in September 2012. Geometallurgical assessment during the feasibility study identified potential process-critical ore factors that required further investigation to determine potential impact on processing. Ore characterisation and metallurgical processing performance test work of ore types ensued and subsequently, the first quantitative DeGrussa geometallurgy model was born. Now one year into steady state production, the geometallurgical program has evolved significantly from its infancy and provides valuable insight into ore characterisation and behaviour in the processing plant. The paper gives details of the performance of a 6-ft. by 6-ft. grate discharge ball mill which was converted into a rod mill of the overflow type and then into a grate discharge rod mill. Proposals for further alterations are outlined.INTRODUCTIONThe mill of King Island Scheelite (1947) Limited recovers scheelite by gravity methods.Crushed ore at the rate of 34 tons per hour is divided between two mills. (6 ft. by 6 ft. and 8 ft. by 6 ft. respectively), the mill discharges being pumped to a common distributor which feeds seven Hummer Screens. Each screen has three 4-ft. by 2-ft. Ton-cap sections and repulping compartments are provided. The screen oversize is returned to the mills whilst the screen undersize is finished grinding section product. A third (6 ft. by 6 ft.) mill regrinding the coarser table tailings also discharges into the common Hummer Screen Distributor.The screen undersize is pumped to a bowl classifier which separates at 200 mesh. The bowl classifier sands are treated on tables whilst the bowl classifier overflow, after thickening, is treated in the slime plant by flotation. The flotation concentrate is further concentrated on vanners and slime tables.A recovery of 80 per cent. is possible by tabling whereas only 50 per cent can be recovered in the slime section. The object of comminution is, therefore, to reduce all the new feed to less than a certain mesh (22 mesh Tyler) with the production of a minimum quantity of minus 200 mesh material. cheelite is, a very friable heavy mineral (Sp.Gr. 6'0) and is therefore susceptible to overgrinding.
