The 372 MW Ulu Jelai Hydroelectric Project is a peaking power scheme located in the Cameron Highlands, Malaysia. The main features of the project include an 84 m high roller compacted concrete dam; two weirs which divert flows from adjacent catchments via transfer tunnels into the main reservoir; an underground power waterway; and an underground power station complex comprising three large caverns with connecting tunnels approximately 240 m below surface level. The project includes approximately 25 km of tunnels excavated in fresh granite rock mass with some distinct shear zones of weaker material. The majority of the tunnels are being excavated using drill and blast, with the two transfer tunnels being excavated with a tunnel boring machine (TBM).This paper focuses on the design and construction of the Telanok underground power station complex and also some aspects of the design for the headrace tunnel. Mineralisation adjacent to Herberton occurs within three main subcentres. The Her- berton Hill subcentre is characterised by the association of Sn,W the Herberton Dividing Range South subcentre by Sn, and the Herberton Dividing Range North by Cu, As. The relation- ships between the subcentres are discussed in terms of metal distribution, production, deposit types, wall rock alteration and re- lationships with granitoid intrusives. The temporal and three dimensional spatial re- lationships between the centres are uncertain.

The cause of spontaneous combustion of pyritic black shale has been studied by calorimetry and other techniques. The conditions required for ignition to occur are: 1. A critical mass of pyritic black shale. 2. Acidity. 3. Fine shale particle size. 4. A high ambient temperature. 5. The exclusion of air during the preparation of a calorimeter charge. The reaction is characterised by an initial incubation period during which an unknown phase is produced. The build up and oxidation of this phase results in a chain reaction culminating in ignition. The mechanism is believed to involve the interaction of pyrite, sulphuric acid, ferrous sulphate, or meta-stable oxysulphates, with ammonium nitrate. The recommended strategy for prevention of premature detonation is to neutralise the acids in the shale with quick and slow release alkaline materials.

Glencore’s Mount Isa Mines Limited (MIM) operates the Mount Isa open cut and underground copper (Cu) and zinc-lead (Zn/Pb) mines near Mount Isa in Queensland, Australia. Tailings from processed Cu and Zn-Pb ore is contained in a 1,315 ha shallow (< 35 m deep) multi-cell valley fill tailings storage facility (TSF). Static geochemical testing conducted by MIM over the life of mine (LoM) verifies that the Cu, and Zn-Pb tailings has a wide range in sulfide content and diverse mineralogy with significant acid neutralising capacity (ANC) in some samples. The tailings are predominantly classified as potentially acid forming (PAF) using static analytical methods. Kinetic leach testing using free draining columns and humidity cell tests simulating tailings placed on the surface of the TSF suggest that the tailings samples are likely to remain non-acid forming (NAF) for 10 to 40 years under aerial exposure, and much longer than this under saturated conditions within the TSF. During this period of weathering, as ANC is depleted, the neutral pH drainage may contain elevated concentrations of some elements including sulfate, manganese and zinc. The application of photogeological techniques and analysis of more advanced remote sensor images can be a cost and time effective tool in the search for desert placer gold deposits. Examples are given of regional analysis using standard false color composit Landsat images and conventional black and white aerial photography. The examples include identification of sites to sample to evaluate the pathways of .alluvial gold migration and identification of potential sites of concentration. The results of these studies developed an increased number of target areas and exploration in proceeding with promising results. In addition to the development of additional target concepts and identification of specific target areas data useful to evaluation of mineability can also be obtained from photogeological investigation. Some indication at least can be obtained of the existence of duricrusts and salines that may hamper mining. Identification of possible sources of water is another important task in the desert environment. In addition indications of the clay content of the material to be worked is very important because of its economic impact on operational costs and overall recovery. The application of photogeology to these questions is discussed.

Sulphide Corporation Pty. Limited has roasted a number of different zinc sulphide concentrates on its sinter machine which pro- duces zinc-lead sinter for an Imperial Smelting Furnace, and results have varied widely. The differences are considered to be functions of !concentrate particle size and reactivity. Amdel have used differential thermal analysis to examine these concentrates and two major effects have been found. Firstly, in concentrates 1containing small quantities of pyrite and chal- L [copyrite, heat is liberated at 400¦C to 650¦C [by oxidation of these two sulphides. Secondly, as particle size decreases, heat release from the oxidation of zinc sulphide commences at flower temperatures and rate of heat release In a sinter bed, the presence of some rite and chalcopyrite would help to heat the cc sulphide to ignition temperature in a orter time, while a finer concentrate would sult in roasting being completed more ickly. Both of these effects result in a arper flame front and minimise the chance heat and combustion fronts being mismatched. is theory is supported by sintering results tained by Sulphide Corporation. Current and future methods of data acquisition in hydrometallurgy are reviewed. Hydrometallurgical operations involve a wide range of chemical and physical processes for the recovery of metals and other products from ores and concentrates. Control of such operations requires information on the different liquid/solid and liquid/liquid mixtures being processed. Continuous. data acqui-sition for the liquid phases uses procedures already commercially exploited in other types of chemical plant. The major problem is the lack of robustness of measuring probes. Continuous analysis of the solid phases is much more difficult to-achieve because of the sampling and analytical techniques involved.

The able address on the currency question given by the Right Honorable A. J. Balfour, M.P., late leader of the Government, at the Mansion House lately, before a large and influential audience, will strike a key-note that will resound throughout the world. It is high time that gentlemen of position and influence should come forward and express their views on this subject, so as to cause the matter to be,more seriously considered than it has been. The question can be no longer ignored or treated with indifference by bankers, financiers, merchants, miners, and others interested in the settlment on some basis the relative values gold and silver bear to each other. It is gratifying to not that such a great leader of political opinion as Mr. Balfour has given serious attention to this important question.The address created a deep impression ,on the minds of many who probably had not given the matter much att.ention, and Mr. Balfour's words will re-echo over a wide range of thought with such effect that I have no doubt they will materially help to check the downward tendency of the value and uses of silver. As a mining engineer, interested in the development of our mining resources for increasing gold aud silver for currency, and having devoted much attention to the subject, I cordially approve of the views set forth by Mr. Balfouf, and I think the general body of all interested in the production of gold and silver will do the same.

In this study the light sparse phase search (SPL_Lt) mode on the Mineral Liberation Analyser (MLA) was successfully used to identify and quantify the abundance of rare earth element (REE) phosphates in Precambrian iron formations. Monazite (light REE phosphate) and xenotime (Y and heavy REE phosphate) are identified and data from the MLA combined with the mineral chemistry of the two minerals are used to calculate and model the expected REE concentration and distribution in these two REE phosphates. The REE phosphates account for up to 31 per cent of the REEs in the banded iron formations (BIFs) and excellent correspondence is observed between the modelled REE patterns and the whole rock geochemical data available for the same samples. Except for quantifying the mineral weights, the sparse phase search also allows for the localisation of REE phosphate grains and the observation of their association with other minerals using backscatter electron (BSE) imaging. These observations are used to conclude that the REE phosphates were most likely of diagenetic origin, with REEs and phosphate remobilised from primary chemical precipitates. It is demonstrated that automated mineralogical techniques can be used to qualitatively and quantitatively describe the influence of a rockÆs trace mineralogy on its geochemistry.

Two-dimensional (2D) estimation approaches have significant advantages over three-dimensional (3D) approaches when dealing with a narrow vein- or layer-like geometry. The main motivation for 2D estimation is that bias due to non-additivity of grade is avoided. The various aspects of 2D estimation are illustrated by use of a case study from the 1A Shoot Nickel deposit at Leinster, Western Australia. The width of the 1A mineralisation is variable, and so are the angles of drilling intersection. Consequently, the variable of interest (in this case nickel grade) is not suitable for direct kriging because it is defined on non-uniform support. However, grade can also be defined as the ratio of two variables that are suitable for direct kriging: thickness and accumulation. In the 2D approach, tonnage equates to thickness and metal equates to the product of grade and thickness, also called æaccumulationÆ. In the simplest approach we can independently krige accumulation and thickness and derive the grade by the ratio of the two resultant estimates. The thickness and accumulation variables must be in a consistent projection orientation, for example a horizontal projection in the case of steeply inclined mineralisation like 1A. Because the density is not constant across the 1A (and most other) deposits, the issue of density weighting is also discussed. The impact of the correlation between grade and length, or grade and density are important issues in implementation of 2D estimation. The circumstances under which these correlations need to be taken into account (by co-kriging) are reviewed. Finally some comments are made on the final use of the resultant 2D estimate for mine planning purposes.

The WA Goldfields is a highly productive gold and nickel mining area, but is arid with highly saline groundwater. Groundwater is widely used to supply process water to mines in the region but high groundwater salinity, commonly exceeding 50 000 mg/L TDS, tends to increase processing costs, limit end uses for the water, cause problems with disposal and potentially increase impacts on a sensitive arid environment. The area has low rainfall (200 - 270 mm/year) but run-off, particularly during cyclonic events, is high. Our experience suggests that stream flow from catchments in the area can produce a divertible yield of 8 - 17 ML/km2/year. An evaluation of stream flow harvesting using AnglogoldÆs Jubilee Pit predicted that 1000 ML/year of good quality water could reliably be supplied to the Sunrise Dam Gold Mine. Because of high rainfall variability, it is likely that an alternate source of water supply will be necessary when operating a surface-water harvesting scheme in the WA Goldfields. However, a combination surface/groundwater supply could have substantial cost, operational and environmental benefits compared to traditional supply systems that utilise groundwater only.

The paper outlines the development in the control of dust in Australia over the last 20 years. Factors influencing dust make at the faces are discussed. The effect of high production systems is analysed. Changes in dust standards and results of dust sampling on longwalls and continuous miner panels are given. Research conducted on air curtains and water infusion on dust control on longwall faces is presented along with recommendations for future research. It is found that both dust curtains and water infusion can cut dust mak by 50" each when applied separately.

The Iron Bridge magnetite mine and infrastructure project is currently in development as a joint venture between Fortescue Metals Group, Formosa and Baosteel. It is supported by an extensive database of reverse circulation drill hole samples analysed by X-ray fluorescence (XRF), with a large subset tested for concentrate mass recovery, concentrate and tail grades by Davis tube recovery (DTR) testing. A limited number of rock physical testing results, including unconfined/uniaxial compressive strength and crushing work index, completes the database.By combining all available information – assays, DTR results, geology, stratigraphy, mineralogy and rock physical results – and using multivariate statistical analysis techniques, the impact of the critical factors that control concentrate quality, mass recovery and grindability characteristics have been outlined. A set of geochemical groups was created by using a cluster analysis technique from the combined XRF-DTR data. These groups allow optimal separation of material with consistently high concentrate Fe grades and mass recovery. This approach is superior to domaining based on stratigraphic logging or mass recovery as it is commonly used in standard magnetite estimation models. Using the results of a normative mineralogy study, the main geochemical groups were given a mineralogical profile fitting their geochemical characteristics. These findings further refined the understanding of the link between the process characteristics of the samples and their geochemical signature and mineralogy.The geochemical grouping defined on head grades and DTR concentrate mass recovery was generalised into a ‘geomet’ code based solely on the routinely assayed head grades, thus bypassing the need for systematic DTR testing. The geomet code identifies spatial domains with homogeneous geochemistry, mineralogy and process characteristics in both oxide and fresh material that form the basis of the current Iron Bridge resource model. The allocation of geometallurgical characteristics in terms of concentration amenability and concentrate characteristics on a block-by-block basis over the whole project allows for an optimum mine schedule and plant feed. This ensures that the desired concentrate characteristics and mass recovery can be better predicted over the life-of-mine, thereby improving the mine’s economics and stability by derisking the mine schedule and optimising the performance of the concentrators. A key benefit of the geomet code devised for the Iron Bridge mine is that it can be attributed in an automated manner to all samples analysed for a routine XRF analytical suite, from exploration to blasthole drilling. This allows each sample to be allocated to a geometallurgical material type with predictable process response in terms of concentrate mass recovery and concentrate quality without the need to complete systematic DTR testing.A standard multivariate analysis coupled with a cluster analysis has allowed the linking of interdisciplinary results between geology, mineralogy, geochemistry, process and metallurgy to better understand, predict and ultimately mine and process the Iron Bridge deposits. Anoxic limestone drains (ALDs) have been widely used in the passive treatment of acid mine drainage (AMD), but their effectiveness has often been less than anticipated. Iron hydroxide often precipitates around limestone particles and inhibits neutralisation. To determine the conditions under which iron hydroxide precipitates, a small-scale laboratory ALD system was built to enable a detailed examination of the chemistry of iron within the drain. For one experiment, a mixture of limestone and quartz was introduced to the drain to assist in the determination of the key mechanism governing iron precipitation. Synthetic anaerobic acid mine drainage containing Fe2+ (~130 ppm), SO4 2- and H+ was pumped at a rate of 30 mL/min up a 90 cm tall, 15 cm diameter vertical column filled with limestone gravel of 98 per cent purity. Three sampling ports were fitted at equal intervals along the column; water was periodically extracted for analysis at the sampling ports over an 11-hour period. Experiments were run at influent pH levels of 2 and 4. Results show that acid neutralisation to pH greater than 6 occurred at the inflow end of the drain. The greatest amount of iron precipitation (19.5 per cent) also occurred in this area. The lack of iron precipitation on the quartz surfaces in the quartz/limestone mixture indicates that neutralisation is the key mechanism for the precipitation of iron hydroxide on limestone particles. A pe-pH stability diagram derived for the laboratory ALD system indicates that ALDs will not be effective for AMD with pH 2. Influent waters with pH 2 require a pe of -2 (Eh: -118.4 mV) to avoid Fe precipitation upon neutralisation. Influent waters of pH 4 require a pe between -2 and -4.

Recent developments in engine, transmission and control technology, likely to give rise to improved performance and efficiency of underground mobile equipment, are reviewed. Turbocharging and the electronic control of fuel pumps and injectors can improve diesel engine performance whilst minimizing exhaust emissions. Ceramic materials promise further improvements in engine efficiency. Nevertheless, electrically powered machines, equipped with trailing cables or 'travelling plugs' are expected to find increasing application where there is less need for flexibility and where the cost of ventilation and heating or cooling makes diesel engines unattractive. Voltage to frequency converters and induction motors appear to have a future in mains powered machines. Vehicles employing energy storage in the form of batteries or flywheels will find increasing application, but it is expected that they will remain a minority until there is a significant break-through in battery technology. Hydrostatic transmissions having high power density and efficiency are likely to be used more widely. Electronic control systems are likely to be used to simplify jobs and to improve performance and productivity. Enhancement of remote control systems is to be expected for work in unsafe areas, but true robot operation is considered unlikely for the moment. Attention to ergonomic factors should produce significant productivity gains.

A stibnite concentrate from Golden Spec (WA) was subjected to a series of tests involving high pressure cyanidation and pressure oxidation followed by conventional cyanidation. The concentrate, whose gold content was 18.1 g/t, yielded only eight per cent of the gold when leached directly by a standard 24-hour cyanidation test. The recovery was increased to only 15 per cent when pressure cyanided under the following conditions: ambient temperature, 2000 kPa oxygen pressure, two hour retention time and 30 per cent w/w solids pulp density. This poor response to pressure cyanidation emphasised the refractoriness of the material. Evidence of the fine distribution of the gold through the concentrate, from measurements of the particle sizing distribution and the gold analyses of the individual fractions, also suggested that this concentrate was highly refractory. Pressure oxidation of the concentrate at elevated temperatures followed by cyanidation yielded recoveries as high as 94 per cent. However a preoxidation treatment under the following conditions was necessary: 230¦C, 2000 kPa oxygen pressure for a period of four hours.

Carbonation of reinforced concrete is a potential durability issue for vehicular tunnels. This is particularly the case where elevated carbon dioxide concentrations exist and when the design life is 100 years or more. The process of carbonation can result in loss of passive protection to embedded steel reinforcement and initiation of corrosion. Therefore, tunnel design needs to consider the potential for carbonation on internal surfaces and how design life can be achieved in severe environments. This paper examines methods for predicting carbonation and how deterioration can be mitigated through appropriate concrete mix design and construction practices.

Information from bores in the LatTobe Valley has been accumulating for over fifty years, and the manual extraction of details has become a limiting factor in their use.Punched card equipment, installed by the State Electricity Commission for accounting purposes, was known to be available for reasonable periods, and it was suggested that this could help in the extraction of data from the voluminous records.Investigation showed that they could be substantially duplicated on cards, with consequent gains on many operations; the cards being regarded as an auxiliary to the existing records.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF RECORDSAs a bore is drilled a continuous record of the strata is kept, together with notes on the presence of water or any unusual features which the driller may observe.When coal is struck, samples of each ten feet are usually sent for analysis.The location and surface level of each bore is fixed by surveyors, and details of dates and methods of drilling are also kept.Bores are allocated numbers, prefixed by the name of the parish within which they are drilled. Numbers are allocated in conjunction with the Department of Mines, to avoid duplication.Records of strata and analyses are kept in folders, with 100 bore numbers per folder.Standard plans are drawn, showing the locations, bore numbers and surface levels. For each bore they also show the depth and thickness of coal struck, and the total depth drilled.Cross sections are then drawn, connecting the various coal seams, which have been identified by the geologist.

The intent of this address is to look forward into the 21st Century and present certain thoughts as to how underground coal mining might be conducted. The views in this talk are based principally on the author's experience with mining practices in the United States. It may be difficult to accept, but the 21st Century is a mere 12 years away. What new techniques will be available? To develop an understanding of the way in which technology has been and could be changing, a two- stage analysis is made of mining technology for U.S. Coal. The first phase covers the period 1975 to the present, while the second includes 1960 to 1975. This historical perspective includes a view of underground production by mining methods, considerations of labour productivity, and a review of accident and fatality rates. Several topics are important features of this historical analysis. Among the most significant are: (1) the introduction of Ion-wall mining technology into U.S. underground coal mines, (2) the use of computers to assist in mine planning and design activities, (3) major efforts to improve health and safety performance, with emphasis on underground dust control, and (4) improvements in mining equipment with an eye towards increased reliability and up-time performance. Based on that historical perspective, projections are made in three increments. The first being immediately at the turn of the century, the second being a dozen or so years beyond that, and the third being at the quarter point of the 21st Century.

The design of a coal preparation plant using bore core data cannot be discussed without some reference to the wider considerations of design. A thorough knowledge of coal preparation processes and processors as well as ancillary equipment is essential if the coal properties determined from bore cores, are to be fully utilised. Whilst generalised information of processes is available from a wide range of publications and equipment suppliers for the intending plant designer, local operational experience must be taken into account where there are similarities. However it would be wrong to assume that satisfactory plant design can be achieved merely be repeating previous design parameters. A detailed examination of bore cores used in conjunction with well proven design 'criteria will identify important differences in design parameters without which efficient and economic plant/sectional sizing cannot be achieved.
