A method for relating operating variables and dewatering parameters of Thunes disc filters in the LKAB pelletizing plant at Malmberget in Sweden, via empirical mathematical models is described. Near orthogonal experimental design was used, where all independentvariables were allowed to span over their domain of variation and pseudo-randomly distributed among the experiments. The dewatering parameters are dependent on many variables and instead of using a traditional mechanistic model, an empirical model based on multivariate data analysis was chosen. The way of expressing the relation is by regression coefficients obtained from partial least square regression (PLS). Two empirical models were generated. The models were validated using an extra set of 56 experiments. The dewatering parameters were related to the design variables with few experiments, and user-friendly response surface methodology was used to determine the optimal conditions.

The fragmentation of whole rock by blasting has an influence on the subsequent loading, hauling and crushing operations. However, no method of calculating the frag- mentation has yet been developed. This paper gives a method of calculating the fragmen- tation for the simplest form of blasting, i.e. cratering. Cratering consists of the detonation of a spherical charge of explosive in a blasthole breaking to one free surface. This paper gives a method of calculating the extent of the system of radial cracks generated by the explosive in the rock. This system of radial cracks is then used to calculate the fragment size distribution curve from blasting. The calculated curves are shown to be in good agreement with experiment.

At 11 p.m. on Tuesday, 24th July 1979, an explosion of methane gas in a three heading development panel at Appin Colliery resulted in the deaths of fourteen men. The explosion followed after or was asso- ciated with a changeover of the ventilation to achieve a central intake between two returns. Investigation by Inspectors was followed by separate Judicial and Coronial Inquiries. Investigational information aimed at understanding the circumstances of the ex- plosion was prepared for the Inquiries. Recommendations following the Judicial Inquiry have been adopted by the Department of Mineral Resources.

This paper forms part of a series of papers relating to the Melbourne Underground Rail Loop and presented to the Fourth Australian Tunnelling Conference in Melbourne, March 1981. The Design of Electrical and Mechanical Services in Museum Station and adjacent Running Tunnels and their relation to Rail.wruy Operation through the Loop are described. The descriptions, while specific to Muscrio Station, are generally representative of those being provided at Parliament and Flagstaff Stations. The Museum Station comprises some 6500 square metres of platform and track area, 5000 square metres of booking hall concourse and entrances and 1200 square metres of offices and plant rooms. The Mechanical and Ilectrical Services for this complex are .imilar in many aspects to those of a large !.gr.hrise city building, but in general the i::;ign is directed more strongly towards :.arety, durability and reliability, and subject to many restraints imposed by L'mitations of space and accessability.

Techniques and results achieved during the excavation of the Melbourne Underground Rail Loop (HURL) are summarised and discussed in the context of the various restraints present in a typical urban construction project. Mechanical methods (as distinct from those utilising blasting)accounted for the bulk of the excavation. Ground support was critical in this particular geological excavation setting, but is not discussed in detail except insofar as it constitutes a restraint to excavation progress.

Primay (syngenetic and protogenetic) inclusions - i.e. minerals formed during or before diamond growth and encapsulated in the diamond - provide important information on the origin of diamond. Recent Rb-Sr and Sm-Nd dating of such inclusions has yielded crystallization ages older than their volcanic host, implying that diamonds are mantle xenocrysts. In this paper we report results of studies on the nature of syngenetic inclusions and the carbon isotopic compositons of the host diamond from the West Australian diamond deposits at Argyle and Elllendale. The Argyle diamonds are dominantly, of eclogitic paragensis and are characterized by strongly C depleted compositions. Vaal Reefs Mine annually produces some 75 tonnes of gold. Stoping operations, using a scattered mining method, are conducted on several reef horizons within Witwatersrand Supergroup metasediments of the Klerksdorp Goldfield. Current grades average 7.19 g/t Au over a 133cm stoping width. The reef horizons, of which the Vaal Reef is the most important, consists of 2.9Ga palaeoplacer deposits at the base of low angle unconformities. Typically, a reef comprises a mature quartz and chert conglomerate with a siliceous matrix and intergranular pyrite and carbon. Geologists are primarily responsible for underground mapping and supervising of drilling programs. To a lesser extent they are involved with sampling, grade control, ore reserve estimation, mine planning and rock mechanics. Due to a general decline in grades of gold mines, an escalation of production costs, and with the current weak gold price, it has become essential to improve production efficiencies. Consequently the role of the mine geologist has moved away from that of simply keeping the mining people "on reef'. Greater emphasis is being placed on refining geological models to assist in selective mining of the reef and investigations of secondary reef horizons are encouraged. Exploration within fault losses and re-evaluation of pillars is important, and geologists are becoming more involved with sampling and grade control exercises.

Unit cycles in mining have not changed for many years. Productivity increases over the past three decades have mainly been achieved by using larger and heavier machines. This investment in size has probably reached the point of diminishing returns and increased productivity in the future will have to be generated by other means. One way of achieving this is through automation of selected unit operations, eg dragline overburden removal, truck haulage, ground support installation and secondary breakage. Although, in the past few years, there has been significant progress in this direction, we are still a long way away from even partial automation - especially in hard rock mines. This paper addresses the technical obstacles facing mining automation; suggests ways by which these obstacles may be overcome and identifies the role of industry groups and research providers in this process.

There are many small to medium carbonate hosted complex zinc containing deposits where the zinc is not economically recoverable either as concentrate or metal. High grade (>20% Zn) run of mine ore can be processed but even this material gives relatively poor returns. Considerable effort has gone into developing new technology for either upgrading the ore and/or recovering zinc metal hydrometallurgically but there has been limited success. Minetometal has developed a process capable of economically treating these deposits to give marketable lead and zinc products. This paper reviews alternative processes for these ores and gives a detailed description of the Minetometal Process. CITATION: Shaw, R, 2018. When a thin film of volatile matter is deposited under vacuum on a polished coal surface, and the coated surface is examined microscopically in piano--polarized reflected light, colour changes are observed characteristic of the various macerals present. The colour changes appear to be mainly due to interference between light reflected at the upper surface of the film and at the film/coal interface. A variety of source materials for the volatile matter required have been tested, including powdered bituminous coal, coal tars, boron oxide, and certain resins.

Geological modelling is a crucial preparatory stage to most facets of the mine planning of an orebody. The process of modelling involves skilled geological interpretation. Recent innovations in computer software and graphics hardware provide many tools which can be used to dramatically improve on manual methods of interpreting orebody data. Geological interpretation can be carried out quickly to produce accurate block models for many orebody attributes, such as grades, and these models can be easily updated locally as exploration and mine development data become available. The speed of the modelling process coupled with the mass storage capabilities of the computer now allows geologists to optimise the geological model or carry more than one model through to the mine planning phase.

The originally estimated mine life at Kidston (starting 1984) was 12 years. Through a continuing process of re-evaluation and improvement in the operation and by expanding the geological knowledge in the region, the mine life has been considerably extended. With falling grades and harder ore, the additional reserves have come with increasing risk - not only in an economic sense associated with diminishing profit margins but also operationally, requiring innovative milling technology and geotechnical designs to provide a lower cost environment for continued profitable mine production.

Surface oxidation is one of the most important factors that influence the flotation selectivity and recovery in the processing of complex sulphide ores. It is an inherent part of surface chemical reactions that determine whether the surface film formed on a sulphide mineral will act as a hydrophobic or hydrophilic one. Because of the highly complex surface chemistry and mineralogy involved the results of flotation tests may often be difficult to interpret. In this paper, the flotation behaviour of nickel-copper ores processed in the Sudbury area is discussed with emphasis on the effect of oxidation on individual minerals, primarily pyrrhotite. In general, moderate oxidation of a freshly ground ore promotes the flotability of all principal sulphides in the ore leading to a bulk flotation concentrate. The ease of individual mineral flotability under normal aeration conditions, which is chalcopyrite > pentlandite > pyrrotite, changes to pentlandite > chalcopyrite > pyrrhotite under oxygen-deficient conditions. This behaviour is correlated with the catalytic activity of these minerals for oxygen reduction. On the other hand, preferential oxidation of pyrrhotite may lead to a selectivity increase in flotation. Such a behaviour has been noted in the flotation of a pyrrhotite-rich process stream. The results have been discussed in the light of fundamental electrochemical interactions involving pentlandite, chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite, pyrite and grinding media and a mechanism has been proposed to explain the selectivity.

Gunpowder Copper Ltd is using in-situ leaching to extract copper from the Mammoth sulphide ore deposit in north-west Queensland. To increase metal recovery, ore is fragmented using conventional underground longhole drilling and blasting techniques. Although the upper levels of the orebody had previously been mined by open cut and underground methods, significant reserves of copper existed around old workings. To safely and economically recover this resource, a decision was made to fire the remaining pillars in the upper part of the mine by a single 1.37 million tonne mass blast in February 1992.This paper records the planning, design, and implementation of the Mammoth mass blast. Geological and geotechnical aspects are summarised, to explain the reasons for such a large blast. Drilling, charging and blast initiation are discussed in detail, to show how standard equipment and products were applied to a unique task.

To clarify the characteristics of non-uniform flow of gas through layered burdens of ore and coke, flow equations of continuity and motion were solved numerically taking account of the geometrical effect of a bed. The results are compared with that predicted by an approximate solution. A mathematical-kinetic model for determining the distributions of process variables over the region from the top to the melting level of blast furnace with the horizontal or the inclined layers of burdens is developed in consideration of the uneven gas flow. By the use of this model, the longitudinal and the radial distributions of process variables in an existing blast furnace in Japan were calculated with the aid of a digital computer. Computed results show that the process variables and the melting level change remarkably over the cross-section of the furnace and that the patterns of these distributions are similar to the results observed by other investigators.

Raiseboring is a technique that has become popular in modem mining engineering since the early 1960s. A study has been undertaken at the University of Queensland to determine important factors affecting the optimum diameter of raisebored shafts, excluding local parameters such as the maximwn excavation size that a particular rock type can safely accommodate.This model is used to examine each of these factors and the results indicate that the optimum diameter for raisebored shafts is generally between four and six metres.

Peko Mines, a Division of Peko-Wallsend Operations Limited (PWOL) has operated several small underground mines in the Tennant Creek district of the Northern Territory supplying ore to a central treatment plant. The Argo Mine is the most recently developed by Peko Mines. A magnetic anomaly was identified from low level airborne magnetics in 1960 and drilling, which commenced on the site in 1969, was halted in 1974 and resumed in 1980 following the rise in the price of gold. By mid 1983 a resource of + 200 000 tonnes of 12 g/tonne Au had been outlined and a decision to develop the resource was taken following the drilling of three further diamond drill holes which did not significantly alter the value of the resource. The small size of the orebody could not support the full capital cost of two shafts and a single entry mine plan was developed to extract the ore at a rate of 15 000 tonnes per month and to provide all the safety features, ventilation systems and services of a two shaft mine. In December 1983 a contract was let to Allied Constructions Pty. Limited (Allied) to sink and equip a 4.8m shaft to a depth of 410m and to convert the headframe and winder, which are leased for the life of the mine by PWOL from Allied, from a sinking to a production configuration. Shaft equipment designed by Hardcastle & Richards Pty. Ltd. (H & R) in conjunction with PWOL includes a skip/cage, counter- weight, and an auxiliary cage on rope guides, a sealed ladderway and exhaust air ducts.

This paper comments on major components of pressure filter facilities from the point of view of industrial-plant suppliers. For lack of time aspects of economy have not been commented upon.
