The Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has conducted full-scale explosion experiments, to evaluate the strength characteristics of various seal designs, used for safely isolating worked-out areas in underground coal mines. Large-scale explosion tests conducted within the multiple entry section of PRLÆs Lake Lynn Experimental Mine (LLEM) is currently the only accepted test method used by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), for deeming a seal design suitable for use in American mines. These explosion tests are labour intensive, expensive to conduct, and can interfere with other critical underground safety and health research programs conducted by NIOSH. The PRL has developed an alternative seal evaluation method, based on a hydrostatic pressure loading concept, that can facilitate the in situ testing of seals in an operating mine. Two chambers within LLEM and one within PRLÆs Safety Research Coal Mine (SRCM) were used for hydrostatic pressure loading various seal designs. The results from these chamber tests compare favourably with those from the large-scale explosion tests in the multiple entries. In addition to testing seal designs at the required 20 psi static pressure level, the chamber test approach also allows for the determination of the sealÆs ultimate design strength. Size-scaling relationships for predicting the strength of seal designs as a function of entry size are also presented.

A new ecologically promising technology for the copper-nickel ore benefication using insert gases and pyrrhotite depression is under consideration. The finely dispersed nickel-containing sulphides and the pyrrhotite are easily oxidised during the process of flotation resulting in deterioration of selectivity and valuable component loss in the tailings. One of the ways to improve the benefication is the flotation of easily-oxidising minerals in an inert atmosphere. In the experiments nitrogen was taken as the inert gas supposing that in the industrial scale operations nitrogen generating, as a by-product of the oxigen production. will be used (Rybas et at, 1989). The most wide-spread mineral in the Norilsk rich sulphide copper-nickel ores is pyrrhotite containing iron, sulphur, nickel and platinum group metals. Up to 30 per cent of the pyrrhotite sulphur is recovered into the nickel concentrate causing the high sulphur dioxide emission in the further pyrometallurgical process of nickel production. This is the reason why the problem of the pyrrhotite removal during the ore concentration should be solved, the critical factor of the problem being the lowest possible nickel content in the pyrrhotite. According to the data of the geological and mineralogical mapping the nickel content in the pyrrhotites of rich ores varies from 0.3 to 1.8 per cent, with the mean value equal to 0.6 - 0.8 per cent. This assures the technological and economical effectiveness of the low-grade pyrrhotite removal during the flotation process.

MERLIN, the Queensland Department of Minerals and Energy's corporate geographic information system, provides ready access to all georeferenced data held by the department. Its aim is to provide a consistent, current, statewide coverage of timely information to assist in tenures management, exploration targeting and competing land use decision-making. Initially developed in 1988 and under continual enhancement since then, its functionality is the result of on-going close consultation with a wide range of departmental clients and potential users. A true geographic information system, MERLIN maintains both graphical data with linked textual information on a wide range of features of interest. The proprietary software products Arclnfo and Oracle are used to hold the graphics and attribute information respectively. Access to information is provided by a specially designed graphical user interface programed in-house. Hardcopy output of graphics displays including related attribute data as well as detailed reports of textual information can be retrieved at any departmental office. MERLIN is a network of computer systems which link each of the Department's regional offices and head office in Brisbane. The current state of exploration and mining is maintained by departmental officers processing tenure applications, transactions and dealings directly into the system. Data entered at regional offices are transferred overnight to head office to up-date central records and maintain a currency of data statewide as at the close of business the previous day. Through MERLIN the Department of Minerals and Energy now offers a much streamlined tenures management service as well as access to information about past exploration and mining, Queensland's mineral and energy occurrences and resources, and up-to-date information on the state's geology including maps, boreholes, geophysical surveys and field observations. In the future, this Geographic Information system will be invaluable to the mining industry in the development of mining projects.

The Racecourse Orebodies at Mount Isa consist of a series of parallel steeply dipping lead/zinc/silver orebodies with a strike length of up to 1000 metres. Production from these orebodies between 13 Level to 9 Level has been by a series of cut and fill stopes in two level stages, leaving a crown pillar at 11 level. Development of the 15 level to 13 level extraction stage has recently been completed. The layout consists of a series of parallel stopes over a strike length of 1200 metres. Access to the stopes is by two declines connecting the stopes with a series of crosscuts This paper describes the basic layout with development and production methods employed.

"An accurate prediction of benefit for some types of ore may require not just the ore grade, but a whole compositional characterisation of the estimates; that is, its full mineral composition including waste composition and nuisance elements. An example is Nickel laterite ores, where Ni/Co content must be complemented by estimates of many other elements, as these might have a notable impact on ore processing.Estimates are often obtained with (co-)kriging or co-simulation; however, geostatistics applied to compositional data may yield spurious and inconsistent results because of the constant sum constraint. The log-ratio approach avoids such problems. It proposes a three-step procedure: data are mapped to a set of log ratios of components; for example, the additive log-ratio transformation (alr) transformed scores are modelled with an appropriate fully multivariate geostatistical toolbox; for example, direct/cross-semivariograms and co-kriging or co-simulation results are back-transformed to the original units.Some practical aspects may make the application of this technique difficult: the assumption of Gaussianity and the high dimensionality of the compositions combined with the need for using multivariate methods. This contribution compares several ways of treating compositional data (combining normal score transformation, log-ratio transformations, and minimum/maximum autocorrelation factor (MAF) decomposition) with respect to their ability to generate sensible simulations. The various approaches considered are illustrated with a Nickel laterite data set for which ten variables are available. Both theoretical considerations and illustration results suggest that the best combination is (log)ratio-normal score transform-MAF, in this order. The factors so obtained are closer to Gaussian, approximately spatially decorrelated and can be simulated independently. Simulations can later be recombined to alr-simulations, which in turn may be converted back to point compositions. The resulting simulated compositions are compared with a full Gaussian co-simulation of the raw data. The log-ratio methods show reasonable to good reproduction of mean values, and distribution of the data set and by construction satisfy the total sum constraint, in contrast to the simulations based on raw data for which the total sums fluctuate strongly.CITATION:Mueller, U, Tolosana-Delgado, R and van den Boogaart, K G, 2014. Roasting of sulphide and sulph-arsenide gold ores produces unwanted emission of sulphur and arsenic oxides, and a less than complete recovery of gold. Pyrite loses sulphur and arsenopyrite loses arsenic at a useful rate at temperatures of 600¦C and above in an inert atmosphere. Sulphur and arsenic driven off can be condensed before entering the atmosphere. During the process, solid-solution gold redistributes itself on internal surfaces of the resulting iron sulphide. Two subsequent processing options may be used; direct cyanidation of the porous sulphide resulting from the anoxic pyrolysis, or a second-stage roast to oxidise the remaining iron sulphide. The first option may be viable under certain conditions of pyrolysis. The two-stage option has an environmental advantage over the traditional roast because it reduces oxide vapour emissions by 50 per cent. The second stage may provide nearly enough energy to sustain the entire process.

Kidd Creek mine in north western Ontario is developing phase 1 of the deep mine project for mining between 2100 m and 3100 m below surface. Heat problems were experienced during the 2003 summer in working places about 2300 m below surface. At the time the mine had a æcold stopeÆ for cooling the air supplied to the mine below 1500 m from surface. The æcold stopeÆ is where during winter, ice is created in both the open pit and its connecting airways to the mine and used to cool air in summer. The operation and limitations of the existing cold stope were evaluated and led to the requirement for additional mechanical cooling to be available for the summer of 2004. The first stage of a surface refrigeration plant providing 7.5 MWR of cooling was approved, the compressor set was ordered in early January 2004 and the plant commissioned six months later in early July 2004. Based on the current modifications to the mining plan, further plant expansions are required in 2006 and 2009 leading to a total of 19 MWR of mechanical refrigeration and 8.5 MWR equivalent from the extended cold stope. The refrigeration system is described with emphasis on the specific adaptations necessary to suit Canadian conditions. Additional investigations were; using the refrigeration compressors in winter for heating and, extending the performance of either cold stopes or alternative ice storage systems. The winter use of refrigeration involve removing heat from the mine exhaust air to provide a cooling load and to use the hot water in the condensing circuit to heat the intake air and reduce reliance on mine air heating with natural gas. This paper follows on from an earlier one presented at the Seventh International Mine Ventilation Congress where the background and planning of the mine ventilation and cooling requirements were described for extending the mine at depth to 3100 m.

At Newmont’s Jundee Operation, exploration and resource geologists collaborated to produce an open pit resource model. Using a variety of modelling and estimation techniques but no new data, an uneconomic underground target was converted into a potentially economic open pit evaluation. During an industry downturn, it is more important than ever to efficiently share expertise, ideas and resources to problem solve and produce meaningful project outcomes. The two departments brought together different methods and ideas, and the process showed that certain methods worked better than others in different situations, thus the appropriate method was applied to each part of the evaluation. The results were used to create new procedures and improved lithology modelling and resource model estimations. Adaptability of the geology departments and collaboration such as this are key to ongoing improvements and future mine life at Jundee.CITATION:Dudgeon, K, Paradis, J and Topping, M, 2014. Changes in mining technology have led to an increase in the number of underground sulfide dust explosions reported in Australian and overseas mines. Samples collected at the Elura mine consisting primarily of pyrite, pyrrhotite, arsenopyrite, sphalerite and galena, were tested in 8 litre explosion chamber. The dusts were found to be capable of producing dangerous dust explosions with maximum explosion pressures of 440 kPa and rates of pressure rise of 5200 kPa/s. The hazards of a sulfide dust explosion are associated with the pressure wave and flame front of the explosion and the toxic gases remaining after the explosion.

To the layman or the casual in- vestor, the critical problems in the mining industry appear to rest on the questions of finding and developing an orebody. The high cost of finding a major orebody suggests that the search is the only matter of real concern. However, the resulting operations which hopefully will provide a profit- able return, depend very heavily on the quality of the servicing that the particular industry receives. Once the mining venture has been established with the necessary plant, equipment and infrastructure, the routine servicing becomes an important function of the operations.

A 3050m long section of a 1.65m internal diameter tunnel is presently under construction in the Brisbane area by means of the pipe-jacking method. The soils along the alignment had been deposited in a deltaic/estaurine environment and rapid changes in soil type occur. The tunnel passes beneath several extensive bodies of surface water. Groundwater problems have been experienced with tunnelling through alluvial sands and gravels. Details of the ground conditions, the pipe-jacking method used and tunnelling experience are discussed in this Paper.

Mercury is introduced into EZ's electroly tic zinc/sulphuric acid plant complex at Risdon, Tasmania, in zinc sulphide concentrate. Mercury is volatilised during the roasting operation and then distributed in the sulphuric acid plant effluents and product acid. Following an investigation of the factors determining the mercury distribution, a plan was formulated to-provide an environmentally accep- table degree of mercury containment at Risdon. This paper discusses details of the various control measures investigated and out- lines the reasons for selecting the particular procedures finally adopted for the Risdon plant.

With oxygen conditioning routinely used in both the lead and zinc circuits at Pasminco Elura Mine a more sophisticated method of determining oxygen demand was required. It is known that different ore types have different oxygen consumption rates, however oxygen is added at a fixed rate regardless of ore type in the plant. Therefore, a simple laboratory test was devised to measure the oxygen demand of ores. The paper describes the technique employed, and provides an interpretation of the results. These data, together with pulp chemical measurements (Eh, pH and EDTA extraction data) were correlated against laboratory flotation performance to establish the relationship between oxygen demand and the position of the grade/recovery curve.

Titanium tetrachloride may be reduced to trichloride with hydrogen on a hot tungsten filament and other hot: surfaces. The effect of temperature, time and size of t.he filament on the rate of reaction has been studied. A laboratory unit for preparing a few pounds of trichloride at a time is described. The yield of trichloride is 2·2 - 2·4 gm/sq. cm. of hot surface/hour at 1,000°C. and the energy requirement 3'5-4 kWh/pound of trichloride produced.'INTRODUCTIONThe lower chlorides of titanium (titanium tri- and dichlorides) are amenable to electrolysis, being electrovalent in nature. Furthermore, relative to other oxygen-free titanium salts, they are easy to prepare in a pure state and their use has been investigated to prepare titanium. Mine planners frequently face the challenge of mitigating the impact of climatic events on mining operations, such as floods and droughts. Specific water management infrastructure can be implemented to meet operational requirements in response to these events. However, the effect of flood protection, for instance, may reduce the resilience of the site to drought. The probability and duration of unfavourable climate sequences significantly influences the net present value (NPV) of implementing specific water management infrastructure.Good life-of-mine planning will consider the incremental development of the project, and provide staged development plans. A broker relies heavily on mineral valuations and independent experts' reports to provide the fundamental information, both technical and commercial, which provides the basis of estimating the sharemarket value of securities and underlying assets. It is important to appreciate the significant variance that can occur between the market value and other types of valuation at a particular point in time. In general, most experts' reports and valuations seek to provide estimates of technical/fundamental or ""fair"" value which correspond to the Corporations Law and accounting standards requirements. They do not usually attempt to estimate (stock) market values and it is usually and quite correctly the broker's task to estimate market values on the basis of a technical appraisal and consideration of all other commercial, market and financial influences. Therefore ideally, an independent experts' report or information memorandum will include material relating to commercial and management aspects of a company as well as detailed technical reviews and fundamental valuations. Wherever sensible cash flow projections can be made, cash flow-derived valuations, usually based on discounted cash flow (DCF) calculations, remain the preferred valuation methodology. Brokers in general would not argue with this preference. However, there is a paucity of examples of valuations where alternative methods are applied as a check on the reasonableness of a DCF-based estimate.

Large quantities of data about production, coal quality, ground stability, ventilation monitoring, equipment performance and location, vehicle and personnel movements and geology, are generated from all parts of the mine.Internet technology and virtual reality technology are now being combined to provide an intuitive, multi-dimensional information system which can simultaneously display any information that can be collected and stored by a computer. Physical information is directly displayed as 3-dimensional objects in the mine model. Numerical and text information is dynamically linked to these objects and accessed by "clicking" on them.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. Magmatic arcs are prime targets for porphyry- and epithermal-style mineral deposits, although settings within continental arcs and/or tectonically-thickened crust generally tend to be more prospective than intra-oceanic arcs in extensional settings. In this paper, we report new geochemical and geochronological data on igneous rocks of the Western Belt of the Vanuatu intra-oceanic arc. Dating of igneous hornblende (Ar-Ar) and zircon (U-Pb) from the igneous rocks place their formation in the late Eocene to Miocene. In most respects, these are typical arc igneous rocks. However, they contain inherited zircon grains with significant age populations at ca 2.8–2.5 Ga, 2.0–1.8 Ga, 1.75–1.5 Ga, 850–700 Ma, 530–430 Ma and 330–220 Ma. This inheritance signature is unlike anything recognised from the oceanic realm of the south-west Pacific, but, in general, does match the age of the major crustal blocks of the Australian continent. An exception is the significant proportion (~20 per cent) of zircons of Rodinia breakup age (~800 Ma), which previously has not been found in eastern Australia or the south-west Pacific.We propose that part of the Vanuatu arc basement comprises a ribbon of continental material rifted from northern Australia prior to, or during, the Cretaceous. The presence of ancient continental material within the Vanuatu island arc may help reconcile the relatively large thickness and low density of the crust of Vanuatu, and may enhance the prospects for significant porphyry and epithermal ore deposits in the region.CITATION:Spandler, C, Buys, J, Holm, R J and Richards, S W, 2015. The Golden Gift is a recently discovered deep deposit below the main operating areas of the Stawell Gold Mine. At an early stage of the project, diamond drilling was used to define the mineralisation on sections approximately 100 - 150 m apart. The project economics were sensitive to both grade and tonnage. There were consequently two significant risks on resource quantification: risk on tonnage (ægeological riskÆ); and risk on grade (ægrade riskÆ). The degrees of freedom inherent in the geological model were considered to be potentially high because of wide drill spacing and likely structural complexity. To quantify geological risk three geologists familiar with Stawell mineralisation independently interpreted the deposit. This generated three plausible, different geological volume models. Conditional simulation was then used to quantify grade risk. Conditional simulation requires the user to define input statistics (histogram and variogram model) and a geological envelope. Based on global mean grade of an ordered set of simulations, æpessimisticÆ, æmedianÆ and æoptimisticÆ simulation cases were defined. The result was a 3 x 3 risk matrix with geological risk (the three interpretations) on one axis and grade risk (also three cases) on the other axis. An interesting result was that geological and grade risks were of a similar order of magnitude. Therefore a risk analysis of grade by geostatistical methods within a fixed geological model is of limited value, especially if the drill spacing is wide. After completion of this study, with additional drilling, the geological degrees of freedom at Golden Gift reduced substantially. A second Golden Gift risk study used a refined geological model to build a set of simulations to be used in preliminary mine design. A third simulation study in the deeper parts of the Magdala ore deposit, a well-drilled part of the mine with production history, demonstrates that the geostatistical simulation method used at Golden Gift is a robust and useful tool to quantify grade risk.
