Large Late Archaean greenstone belts in Western Australia, Canada and Zimbabwe, contain abundant mesothermal gold, volcanogenic massive base-metal sulphide, and komatiite-associated Ni-Cu mineralization. These greenstone belts are similar in many respects to convergent and accretionary plate margins found in the Pacific rim; modem environments which are cor-respondingly rich in gold and base-metal mineralization. The giant gold placer deposits of the Late Archaean Witwatersrand Basin (the world's largest gold producer) formed in a foreland or retro-arc basin; in a similar tectonic setting to much modem placer mineralization around the Pacific. Gold and volcanogenic base-metal sulphide mineralization are abundant in Late Archaean terranes and the Pacific rim because1. gold mineralization is a product of convergent margin tectonics, and 2. accretion in convergent margin orogens provides the best chance of preserving base-metal mineralization related to submarine volcanism.It is therefore likely that the abundance of gold and base-metal sulphide mineralization in the Late Archaean reflects the widespread growth and sta-bilization of continental crust via tectonic processes broadly similar to those operating in the present Pacific basin.

The Cadjebut orebody is a MississippiValleyType (MVT) zinc-lead deposit, and is located approximately 80 km southeast of Fitzroy Crossing in the Kimberley region of Western Australia. It is one of five zinc rich orebodies discovered by BHP Minerals in the region.The participation in the Cadjebut Joint Venture is BHP Minerals limited (Manager), 58 per cent and Billiton Australia Limited, 42 per cent.The mineralisation is contained in gently dipping dolomitised limestone sediments (part of the Lennard Shelf carbonate sequence) with an orebody width of between 60 and 120 m and a strike length of approximately 3 km. The deposit consists of two thin, stratabound shallow dipping orebodies, one overlying the other, to provide discrete but not independent mining areas. The orebody contains approximately 2.1 million tonnes of recoverable ore at an approximate grade of 12 per cent zinc and four per cent Lead.

The economic feasibility of controlled district cross-cut recirculation is examined in this paper with particular reference to the most important mine ventilation network parameters. An algorithm is developed to express the annual cost of recirculation which is then compared to the annual cost of conventional ventilation using the University of Queensland Experimental Mine as a case study. The concepts of resistance ratio and volumetric efficiency ratio are introduced and used to analyse the economic feasibility of controlled recirculation within a mine ventilation network.

North Eastern Russia encompasses the northern part of the Circum Pacific. The region comprises various tectonostratigraphic terranes, including cratonic blocks, fragments of volcanic arcs, accretionary wedge terranes, oceanic crust and passive continental margins. The terranes have been accreted to the eastern margin of the Siberian Craton in the Late Mesozoic. The prominent structures of the region are extended zones of the Mesozoic flysch and turbidites. Another important structure is the 3000 km long Okhotsk-Chukotka volcanic arc which marks the Cretaceous active continental margin of northern Eurasia. The youngest structure of the region is the 2000 km long Late Cainozoic Kamchatka-Kuril island arc system. North Eastern Russia is the main gold producing region of the Russian Federation. Since the beginning of recorded gold production in 1932 until 1995 the region has produced 2575 t (83M oz) of gold. Most of it, 2439.5 t, has been produced from placers. Owing to depletion of alluvial gold resources, exploration and mining emphasis is currently switching to the development of the lode deposits. At least five distinct types of the gold mineralisation are reported in North Eastern Russia - mesothermal gold mineralisation in the Mesozoic fold belts, Paleozoic epithermal gold mineralisation occurring within Omolon block, epithermal gold mineralisation related to the Mesozoic volcanics, Cainozoic epithermal gold mineralisation, gold-bearing Cu-porphyry deposits. The current paper introduces the metallogeny of lode-gold deposits of North Eastern Russia. It provides the review of the regional geology, the selected gold provinces and representative deposits with an emphasis on the mineralisation styles and distribution control.

The Prestea Goldfields Ltd of Ghana, West Africa has produced over 170 t of gold with average grade of 11 g/t since 1912. The deposits occur in a wide shear zone which closely follow the Birimian-Tarkwaian contact. Both the Birimian and Tarkwaian systems are of Precambrian age. Underground exploration is carried out to delineate ore bodies by means of AX size diamond drilling at 50 m sampling intervals. After the orebody has been delineated, development work is carried out by exposing the gold reef. Channel sampling is then carried out at about 3 m intervals in both the stope and stope drives. A channel sample length is commonly 0.6 in, but may vary depending on physical characteristics of the reef. The values of channel samples are linearly combined to obtain the average reef or slope values and/or widths of the exposed sections. The sampling practice and methods of improving the efficacy of sampling at the mine are described.

In China, there are approximately 3,000,000 million m3 of gas (methane) included in highly gassy mines liable to coal/gas outbursts; the amount of methane pre-drainage possible is estimated at 400,000 - 500,000 million m3. At present, methane drainage has been carried out in 110 mines with a total amount of 19,000 million m3 methane produced during the period of 198 1- 1986. The methane drainage in coal mines of China can be divided into three types: from adjacent seams, from working face seams and from goafs, all with good results. In recent years, general attention has been paid to integrating methane drainage into the mining system but methane drainage from old goafs has to some extent been developed as well.

Kakogawa Works, Kobe Steel, Ltd. has two pelletizing plants and one sintering plant, and the blast furnaces have been operated with 30 - 50% pellets. At Kakogawa Works, various improvements in pellet quality have been carried out since the beginning of operation of the pelletizing plant. Especially, dolomite-fluxed pellets developed in 1975, have superior high temperature properties. The fuel rate of the large blast furnaces at Kakogawa Works has been reduced to 450 kg/t- hn by using a high percentage of dolomite-flux ed pellets.

Two significant TBM boreability predic- tion models are outlined. Predicted advance rates are compared with actual advance rates taken from twenty case histories. The results show that a simple low cost method that uses one machine parameter and one rock parameter compares very favourably with a high cost sophisticated method which also includes information regarding discontinuities in the rock mass. The effect of rock texture on drillability is also examined. A method of quantifying rock texture has been developed and is outlined. Experimental results show that the developed TEXTURE COEFFICIENT returns highly statisti- cally significant correlations with drilla- bility data in a wide range of rock types.

This paper describes the application of a three-dimensional finite element modelling tool to help assess the stability of a highwall at a Central Queensland mine following the weakening of its base due to highwall mining. With traditional stability assessment techniques, likely failure modes are identified on the basis of previous experience and structural, sedimentological and geomechanical data and a mechanistic analysis of these individual modes is performed. The value of the full three-dimensional model over these traditional techniques is that it provides a coherent approach to assessing highwall stability without the necessity of initially deciding upon the dominant failure mechanism and gives a useful adjunct to the traditional tools. The three-dimensional model assumes the rock mass is made of elasto-plastic blocks, incorporating possible planes of weakness, separated by near horizontal joints. The model includes the relaxation of stresses due to the excavation of the highwall and incorporates estimates of blast damage near the highwall surface

Uncertainty about the future and orebody should significantly impact evaluation of mining projects. Scenario planning, widely used in other industries, for example in the petroleum industry, can provide organisations with an opportunity to explore the consequences of uncertainty on their future plans. By developing plausible scenarios, scenario planning assists decision makers by allowing them to make systematic and possibly effective decisions for the future. This paper reviews existing mine project evaluation in the context of a new framework called scenario-based project evaluation (SBPE) (Vann et al , 2012) that addresses many shortcomings of existing approaches. SBPE uses conditional simulations (CS) models as inputs which are evaluated against future alternative project pathways (æalternativesÆ). These alternatives are evaluated using multiple plausible images of the deposit (CS realisations) which capture realistic variability and as an ensemble, map uncertainty of various orebody attributes at fine scale. The alternatives can involve different mining, stockpiling, blending and processing strategies. The ultimate output is a (stochastic) set of cash flows for each alternative from which financial measures, such as NPV, can be derived. Alternatives can then be explored in the presence of against external scenarios such as changes in prices, costs, and taxation. The obvious problem with such data rich results is knowing which scenarios or group of scenarios are optimal.An innovative approach to robust stochastic optimisation (RSO) suited to the SBPE framework is presented here for the first time. This approach to RSO aims to deal with the large number of alternatives generated from SPBE. The goal of applying the RSO approach to SBPE is to identify robust strategic alternatives (project configurations) which have the flexibility to deal with variability and uncertainty of geological and processing inputs such as density, grade and process performance. By applying the proposed RSO method, it is possible to deal with uncertainty and identify the best project configuration in the face of a large number of envisaged scenarios. A case study is provided, in which we have tested the application of the proposed method and compared the result with conventional methods. An important conclusion from this research is that selecting the value of the penalty coefficients in the RSO approach proposed is (as is all optimisation) an exercise of trade-offs; a higher net present value (NPV) is generally associated with a higher risk and a lower risk is associated with a lower NPV. Deposition of uranium in the South Alligator river area has been influenced structurally by reverse faulting; and lithologically by carbonaceous shales and sandstones. Mineral assemblages suggest a mesothermal-epithermal epigenetic mode of origin. The ultimate source of the uranium and associated metals is probably in deep seated magmatism which is expressed at surface in the widespread penecontemporaneous vulcanity.

The effects of change in xanthate addition on the separation of chalcopyrite and pyrite is described. The effect of the regrind mill on the (flotation rate of particles containing chalcopyrite and pyrite is discussed with particular reference to the importance of removing sub-mesh particles from the feed to the regrind mill.

One method of forecasting prices of metals is based on analysis of historic relationships between prices, inventories and consumption. The first, but generally overlooked step in this analysis should be to remove from the inventory and consumption figures the effects of seasonal variations. The next step is to construct diagrams which show prices plotted against ratios of inventories to consumption. These diagrams indicate that, when inventories are high, prices show little response to changes in inventories. Below a critical level of inventories, however, the psychology of the market changes and small changes in inventories lead to large moves in prices. The critical level of inventories is termed the "pinch-point"; the diagram which shows prices in relation to ratios of inventories and consumption may be called a "pinch-point diagram".

Synthetic calaverite (Au Tez) has been prepared and its physical properties checked.Simple flotation tests indicate that the recovery of calaverite should be possible using n-butyl or sec-butyl xanthate collectors under approximately pi I neutral conditions with a copper sulphate activator.Roasting calaverite in air at moderate temperatures resulted in its decomposition with the formation of elemental gold and tellurium dioxide.In alkaline oxygenated cyanide solutions, both gold and tellurium tend to dissolve. At pHs less than 14, about 50 per cent of the tellurium remains as elemental tellurium; however in very strongly alkaline solutions, essentially all of the tellurium is converted to the soluble tellurite ion (TeOl-).However, even at high pHs, the solubility of gold in the cyanide solution is still low due almost certainly to passivation effects.
