A case history of a two year study of low grade ores in the Middleback Range area with the objective of defining possible areas of interest from a combination of geological- petrological-metallurgical criteria. Covering the general geology of the area and ore types; the results of metallurgical testwork and the pattern of evolution of these tests; the petrological explanation of the results of the testwork; the culmination of the work in the selection of areas of best potential for more intensive work. Jaspilites consisting of magnetite, hematite and limonite with quartz and silicate-carbonate-sulphide minerals are hosts to high grade iron mineralisation but also constitute a large low grade iron Reserve.

This paper discusses the use of tapered roller bearings in conveyor idlers. It shows that in medium and high capacity systems, tapered roller bearings can offer significant cost and performance advantages. In the next ten years, conventional conveyors will face increased competition from unconventional belt conveyors, pneumatic systems, pipeline "slurry" systems, unit trains and so on. The conveyor industry must meet these challenges by innova- tive use of technology. Conventional belt conveyors must continue to show the lowest cost per tonne-km or lose their position in the market. Tapered roller bearings can contribute to the achievement of this goal. The concurrent resources boom and liquid fuel crises may well see a decline in the use of heavy trucks for bulk material handling over moderate distances 10 to 50 km. There appears to be a trend in the conveyor industry to go to higher speeds with improved belting in conven- tional widths. The transmission of more material over a given period of time will place more demands on conveyor idler bearings. Australia has in general followed the European practice of using deep groove ball bearings in conveyor idlers.

FOR some time past keen interest has been shown in both America and South Africa in the mining drill-steel problem. This interest has extended to Australian mining fields, and Australian drill users, ever desirous of increasing efficiency, are vigorously attacking the problem. The writer has recently been engaged in the investigation of the problem on two of ,the biggest mining fields in Australia, and has formed very definite conclusions concerning the causes of many drill-steel casualties. He puts these views forward in the hope that they may be of interest to, both drill manufacturers and drill users. The subject is here dealt with mainly from the aspect of the properties of the steel and the modifications of these properties whensubjected to various manipulations. It is generally admitted that the drilling machine has greatly increased in power and efficiency during recent years, and the consequence is that the machine is demanding better service from the steel. This is being impressed on the drill users by an increase in steel casualties. This fact has led many mining people to the view that the machine has developed so rapidly that the steel maker has not been able to keep pace, and that consequently the steel isfailing by fatigue 0:1; so-called crystallization. This view is rather depressing. The writer, on the other hand, is inclined to discountenance fatigue as a serious factor under good normal working conditions where the steel is carefully manufactured and supplied to the user under suitable structural and sound conditions, and has subsequently received kind treatment at the hands of the drill sharpener and the drill user.It is not reasonable to attribute failures to fatigue until it has definitely been proved that the steel is fundamentally sound and is in the best structural condition to resist the stresses it is called upon to withstand, and, this being so, that all fundamental principles of...

A new synthetic reagent of the mercaptobenzoxazole class, 5- methyl-2-mercaptobenzoxazole, has been studied. This reagent exhibits powerful selective collecting action towards copper sulphides present in several complex ores, as demonstrated both by laboratory and pilot plant tests. Industrial production is expected to start in the near future. The way this reagent reacts with pure chalcocite has been studied utilising in situ FTIR techniques, adsorption tests, electrokinetic potential measurements and Hallimond cell flotation tests. The FTIR studies have indicated the nature of the surface phase. Adsorption isotherms obtained by the rest method have revealed the quantitative evolution of surface products, permitting the determination of surface coverage at various reagent concentrations. The electrokinetic potential has been utilised to verify the stability of individual species in diverse concentration ranges. Correlation of the results obtained has provided indications on the chemical interaction of this reagent with the surface and on the surface Arrangement.

During the Palaeoproterozoic, a large number of granitic intrusions were emplaced in the various parts of the Pine Creek Geosyncline (PCG). In the central region, the granitic magmatism is represented either by the coalesced mass, eg the Cullen Batholith, or individual plutons such as the Mount Bundey Granite which together with the Mount Goyder Syenite intrude the metasedimentary strata, causing wide spread contact aureoles. Some of these granitic intrusions are temporally and genetically related to gold (and less commonly base-metals) mineralisation present in the adjacent metasediments. These plutons are characterised by the presence of biotite and homblende which appear late in the paragenetic sequence. Electron microprobe analyses of biotite and homblende show that these minerals are poorly to moderately zoned. Biotites are characterised by a decrease in Fe/(Fe + Mg) ratios when plotted against AIVI. Similarly a modest decrease in Ti from centre to the margins of the biotite crystals has also been observed. Furthermore, an increase in Mg/(Mg + EFe) ratios from centre to the margins as well as in mafic to felsic rocks is also apparent. On the other hand, homblendes from the granitic bodies display less well marked trends and are poorly zoned. However, they show systematic increases in Mg/(Mg + EFe) ratios, and decreases in Fe, Al"' and Fe/(Fe + Mg) ratios, when plotted against Si. Magnetic susceptibility measurements on powdered samples of the plutons give results characterised by high values ranging from 0.8 x 10-4 to 2.0 x 10-3 emu/g which place the granites in magnetite- series field. This indicates that the oxidation state of the magma was high during crystallisation. The range of chemical compositions of the mafic phases indicates a rise in the oxidation state of the magma as it progressively became saturated in H20-volatiles and other metals, not partitioned into the earlier crystallised phases in the final stages of magma consolidation. These variations in chemical compositions also indicate that initially fOz was high and became progressively higher during fractional crystallisation of magmas; this subsequently led to the emanation of hydrothermal fluids responsible for the mineralisation in the adjacent metasediments.

A countercurrent method of metal refining using crystallization and reflux is discussed. 4n account is given of the development of this technique for the separation of silver and bismuth from lead using bench-scale studies to the present small pilot-plant unit (around one tonne per day) in the "Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO)" Division of Chemical Engineering.

This paper deals briefly with productivity-enhancing advances in shaft sinking technology in South Africa post-World War II in general and the developments and application of long rounds since the 1980s in particular and is amply illustrated.It touches on the conversion to circular section, concrete lined shafts, the introduction of tungsten carbide drill bit inserts and grab lashing; expounds the rationale driving the development of longer rounds; and then describes the evolution of long rounds using hand-held and mechanically mounted rockdrills in South Africa and Canada by both local and foreign contractors. The recent experience gained on the sinking of the South Deep Main Shaft follows. Results obtained from this experiment are tabulated and commented upon. The paper concludes with the postulation of æwhat nextÆ and æwhere toÆ scenarios. Addenda include a list of shaft rounds in excess of three metres in length blasted in the Main Shaft at South Deep and their results, typical round design, manufacturerÆs specifications for the 6 m shaft jumbo and rock drills.

In April 2006, Orica Quarry Services undertook an investigation to determine the likely vibration and frequency response of three water storage tanks to quarry blasting, immediately adjacent to the tanks. Of the three tanks that were studied, two are relatively tall with a æwineglassÆ shape; one is constructed of steel (4 ML storage capacity) while the other is constructed of concrete (2 ML storage capacity). The third is a ground-embedded concrete tank that is relatively squat and broad in shape (38 ML storage capacity). A vibration limit of 25 mm/s and an acceleration limit of 0.16 g were imposed on the tanks. However, this report shows that this acceleration limit, whilst having relevance to low frequency earthquake motions, is quite inappropriate for the high frequency blast vibrations that are typical in a quarry blasting environment. The investigation involved firing 11 single blastholes of known charge weights and distances from the tanks, and measuring the tank vibration response using blast monitors placed on and around each tank. Analysis of the data collected from the cement tanks showed resonant responses over a broad range of frequencies, with dominant and lesser responses in vertical and lateral motion recorded at 9.8 Hz, 12 Hz, 16.8 Hz, 17 Hz, 31.3 Hz and 38.1 Hz. Unfortunately, most of the data collected on the steel tank was corrupted by noise due to electrical sources and/or mechanical sources such as the water agitator inside the tank. Advanced Monte Carlo vibration models were then constructed using the single blasthole information. Knowing the resonant frequencies enabled the modelling of electronic delay sequences for the reduction of resonant vibrations. Ultimately programmable and accurate electronic delay detonators were deemed essential to allow blasting in relatively close proximity to the tanks while avoiding resonant frequencies. Three blast designs were modelled, ranging in maximum instantaneous charge (MIC) from 4 kg to 22 kg, and 60 holes to 160 holes. The modelling showed that two of the designs (using small charge weights) could be used no closer than 71 m from the storage tanks. This is based on a 90 per cent confidence level of achieving vibration levels within the 0.16 g acceleration limit, even though the velocity levels predicted to be generated at this distance were significantly less than the 25 mm/s limit. The third design incorporated larger charge weights and could be used for blasting at distances no closer than 220 m from the tanks. The present work, conducted in an operating quarry, demonstrates the usefulness of Monte Carlo waveform superposition techniques for the control and reduction of ground vibration (either velocity or acceleration) under restrictive environmental constraints. However, a discussion is also presented to demonstrate that it is somewhat restrictive to impose an acceleration limit based on the motion produced by low frequency earthquakes rather than the motion produced by high frequency blast vibrations.

The problem of production scheduling is sufficiently complex to negate the use of many conventional optimising techniques as there are numerous and diverse factors that must be considered when trying to produce an optimal schedule. These factors include: grade distribution, orebody geometry, production rate capacity, processing constraints and market price of the minerals amongst a variety of others. In addition it may be observed that many of these factors incorporate a degree of uncertainty and any schedule produced must inevitably consider risk as a primary consideration. The very nature of the problem has limited the use of conventional optimisers. Genetic algorithms use methods based upon evolution and natural selection to produce `optimal' solutions to complex system problems. They are extremely flexible and robust in their nature and it is these characteristics that are important in this particular problem domain. A particular strength of the genetic optimisation approach is the ability to handle the multiple and non-linear constraints that are typically encountered in mine scheduling problems. This paper concentrates on the development of a prototype application of a genetic algorithm to the problem of scheduling the output from multiple production points in an underground mining operation. In particular it.describes a system (GO-SCHED) that can be customised to handle a wide variety of underground scheduling problems. GO-SCHED, a Windows-based system, can interface with a variety of databases and spreadsheets for data input and output and provides a simple intuitive approach to the solution of the scheduling problem.

The underwriting of professional negligence has proved to be an evolving science. As with most insurance products coverage offered in the past was very broad but as legal precedent demonstrated to Insurers areas of unforeseen exposure policy documents per se have become more restrictive until today the insurance market through attrition have produced a basic policy structure with various purchasable extensions which together provide insuring professionals with coverage that has proved to be adequate for their needs. The basic policy provides indemnity and protection for fortuitous negligence. In a practical sense, however, professional indemnity policies are really a defence document in so far as policy holders are relying upon the expertise of Insurers to protect them in the event that a claim is made upon them. Whether damages are awarded is in many respects a secondary consideration, the most important factor is to ensure that policy holders are protected in terms of the legal defence mechanism. By way of illustration we are currently in the process of defending a large professional firm which purchased from us a policy with a limit of indemnity of $10M. The case has been running in a Supreme Court now for 14 months and the defence costs which we have incurred on their behalf are rising close to $8M as I put pen to paper. Defence costs of that magnitude would in effect terminally cripple all but the very largest professional operations in Australia. In more recent times coverage has been provided in Australia for breaches of the Trade Practices Act and similar legislation enacted in various States. No-one really appreciated the comprehensive impact which the Trade Practices Act would have on commerce in Australia. Most professionals thought that indeed they would be exempt from prosecution under this Act. The passage of time has clearly indicated that this is not the case and we have found that it is much more difficult to defend a claim involving breaches of the Trade Practices Act than it would be to defend a claim for breach of tortuous liability.

A mechanised sub-level overhead benching method is used at Cleveland, to produce 22,000 tons per month of ore assaying 0.92% Sn and 0.40% Cu. The ore occurs in a series of vertical lenses which can be mined by open stoping. Levels are developed at 60ft., vertical intervals by jumbos. The ore is silled out and the stope block formed between levels drilled out by long hole drilling. Each row of holes is fired and broken ore within safe reach from the stope brow is mucked out by Wagner ST-5A Scoop Trams. The remaining broken ore is recovered on extraction of the next lower level. Ore is hauled by road to the crusher station from the mine. As mining proceeds below the lowest surface portal a spiral decline will be used for ore haulage and mine servicing.

A major diamond mining operation in South Africa is faced with the unique problem of recovering usable water from the fine tailings stream. The kimberlite ore hoisted is washed prior to crushing in order to remove adhered fine clay particles. These particles form a colloidally stable suspension from which it has not been possible to recover clear recycle water. Research has been conducted on this problem for more than 20 years and it is only recently that a breakthrough has been achieved. This paper describes the work done to gain an understanding of the suspension stability and which subsequently led to the testing of a process at pilot-plant Scale.

Gunpowder Copper Limited processes 1,000 tonne/day of Mammoth ore in a conventional flot- ation concentrator. Run of mine ore is prepared for flotation by three stages of crushing and two stages of ball milling. The concentrate, in which the primary copper mineral is chalcocite, is solar dried and exported to Japan. The history of operation is summarised, and plant practice and metallurgical problems are discussed.

King Island Scheelite had been using dealer modified front end loaders for two years when in 1974 it started to increase production. Suppliers were then quoting long deliveries for underground diesel trackless mining equip- ment, and the Company was forced to modify surface machines which had become redundant as production from the open cut phased out. The results were generally successful and encouraged further adaptations. Drill jumbos excepted, the Company now uses only converted surface machines in areas worked by diesel engined equipment and for all support and auxiliary functions.

Traditional methods of gold extraction have involved comminution and processing via cyanide leaching, all of which are associated with energy, cost and environmental implications. Subsequently, numerous opportunities for improvement and optimisation strategies in gold mining and processing have been explored, including heap leaching, which has significantly lowered comminution costs. This paper explores the effect of the more energy efficient high-pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) on the comminution behaviour (especially on the crack density) and cyanide leaching performance of laboratory reactors study on run-of-mine gold ore comprising the Ventersdorp Contact Reef (VCR) and the Elsburg Reefs (ER), sourced from Carletonville in the Witwatersrand Basin in South Africa. The ore was comminuted using HPGR at three different pressure settings (120, 90 and 60 bar). Large (-16/+11.2 mm) and small (-5.6/+4 mm) particles of the HPGR product where then mineralogically characterised using optical microscopy, quantitative evaluation of minerals by scanning electron microscopy (QEMSCAN) and X-ray computer tomography (CT) before cyanidation. The results of the leach experiments indicated a correlation between gold extraction, particle size and crack density. Mineralogical characterisation of the ore indicates that the Fe-sulfides present in the VCR are likely to be more reactive than those in the ER, thus having a more favourable influence on gold cyanidation. Overall, the results show promise for the heap leaching of Witwatersrand gold ores prepared using HPGR and demonstrate the value of a multi-disciplinary geometallurgical approach.CITATION:Nwaila, G, Becker, M, Ghorbani, Y, Petersen, J, Reid, D L, Bam, L C, de Beer, F C and Franzidis, J-P, 2013. Mining is a necessary part of our modern lifestyle. However, mining can cause damage and pollution of the environment and therefore we must manage our resources wisely accounting for the physical, biological and social environments. Contrary to the view of some people not conversant with the facts mining has in many cases improved the environment. This paper described how two sand dune systems that were unstable prior to mining have been stabilised by revegetation after mining.

The building is a lofty, well-ventilated one of hardwood frame, with galvanized-iron walls and roof, and consists of five spans running north and south, covering a total length of 236 ft. Each span is composed of nine bays of 1:3-ft. centres, making the total width of the building 117 ft. The refinery is situated conveniently at a distance of 100 yds from the smelters. Through the third span of the building runs a 5-ton electric overhead travelling crane, of a 3-motor type, with a span of 29 ft. The crane runway extends over a railway line, which connects the smelters to the refinery. This crane is llsed for handling bullion, coal, melting kettles, lead pumps, &c. A 3-ton crane of similar type, but with a 50-ft. span, runs through the fifth span of the building and also extends over the railwav line alreadv mentioned. This crane is used to load the soft lead into railway trucks, or to stack lead awaiting shipment in the area covered by the crane's operations.

This work was instituted to investigate the microscopic structure of brown coals by means of microtome sections cut from them. It was found to be essential to impregnate the coal with some material prior to cutting, because of its powdery and crumbly nature. Of a number of impregnating materials tried, e.g., glycerine gum, gelatine, by far the most satisfactory was paraffin wax. Samples of brown coals for section cutting must be moist. When obtained, they should be put immediately into air-tight tins, and, if they are not to be used for some time, it is desirable to keep them under water containing a small amount of formalin. If the sample is allowed to dry in air, it becomes too hard to be cut. It cannot be softened again even by prolonged soaking in water.PREPARATION OF COALSmall rectangular, blocks were cut from the sample with a chisel and a strong scalpel. The largest block prepared was 3·2 x 2·5 x 0·6 cm. The faces of the block from which sections were to be cut were approximately levelled before treatment. The block was then painted carefully on all sides with two coats of warm aqueous agar, approximately 2 %. This prevented crumbling and breakage of the block during treatment. When the agar was set, the block was placed in water, and all the air removed with a vacuum pump. The water was replaced first by alcohol, then by chloroform, by the usual step transference of a series of liquids, in each of which the block was placed for 24 hours: Ethanol %, 10, 20, 30, 50, 70, 85, 95, 100 (three changes); Ethanol-chloroform, 3: 1, 1: 1, 1 : 3, chloroform pure (three changes) '. Scheduling mine development and underground construction has been the bane of most mine managersÆ lives at one time or another. Even though scheduling software has developed significantly over the last 20 years, mining projects continue to take far longer than expected to complete. It would appear that possession of a gleaming 1000 activity bar chart generated by the latest project management software and plotted in multiple colours offers no guarantee at all that any of those 1000 activities will be completed on time, let alone the project as a whole. The author has earned his æmasters in disastersÆ with more than one project running over time and budget. This paper describes some of his experiences in scheduling major mine development and construction projects and the lessons he has learnt along the way. In particular, the paper examines a range of key issues that mine schedulers must take into account when planning mining projects. The paper also examines the development of scheduling software and particular advance rates used in scheduling mine development projects in Australia.

Resolution Copper Mine in Arizona, USA, is planned to be a 2000 m deep panel cave mine with virgin rock temperatures exceeding 80¦C in rock with high crystalline silica content, resulting in a very challenging ventilation and cooling system design. This is one of the largest copper orebodies ever found and, with a planned rock production rate of 120 kton/day. The project is currently in its prefeasibility phase and the paper discusses features of the ventilation and cooling system design which includes multiple ventilation shafts with total primary ventilation flow of about 3000 m3/s and both surface and underground refrigeration plants producing more than 140 MW refrigeration capacity. The cooling system features large surface bulk air coolers chilling all downcast air supplemented by an underground secondary air cooler system and a chilled service water system.
