The paper describes the geotechnical as- pects of design and construction of two 12 m diameter concrete lined tunnels from the start of design to completion of construction. Prob- lems occurred due to delay in supply of essen- tial rock support materials from overseas and alternative methods using locally available materials were developed. Several major rock- falls and rock movements occurred and remedial measures are outlined.

Computers and other microprocessor technology lead the world of technological change. Nevertheless, the real advances in the world at large are not necessarily in the computer industry, but in the industries whose economics benefit most by the advances that this computer revolution makes possible. The minerals industry has always been in the forefront of this advance. Technological change in the era preceding the industrial revolution, and the mining industry's part in it, provides an instructive lesson for what is happening today. Strong parallels can be drawn for predicting future advances. With each technological advance allowing more efficient production comes a re-alignment of economics - absolute and relative changes to prices, to quantities demanded, and to other market characteristics. This re-alignment applies not only to the mineral industry, but also to the world at large. Adaptability, rather than technical advancement per se is the key to survival and growth in a changing world. 'Adaptability' as a concept is easy to support. As an operational philosophy it is not so easy to implement. As a goal for planning, it is much harder to quantify. A fixed scenario of a future world may provide helpful guidelines, but a scenario that demands adaptability to an uncertain future world is much less definite. Of course, everyone else in the world is also uncertain about the future, and they are making their plans using different assumptions. This virtually guarantees that our future will turn out different to our expectations. This is in part what Hayek (1945) calls the 'knowledge' problem. Until now, most of the planning and technical research undertaken in the world has ignored this problem. This ignorance is a luxury that we can no longer afford. The paper looks at the history of technological change and highlights the characteristics of successful technological revolutions. 'Adaptability' to unforeseen circumstances is the key to success in this environment. The paper examines the knowledge problem from the perspective of the mineral industry, and suggests a number of directions for maximising the returns from application of computer technology in this important area.

A new high intensity flotation process 'FASTFLOT' is explained and its theoretical advantages compared with other flotation systems are discussed. The results of initial FASTFLOT testing on the zinc roughing circuit at Pasminco Mining, Broken Hill South concentrator are presented and compared to recent plant data. The comparison suggests that on roughing duties, the FASTFLOT process yields superior concentrate grade while requiring less than one third the residence time of a conventional mechanical cell plant. Strategies for FASTFLOT deployment are also presented.

Underground metalliferous mining methods often result in the formation of vertical openings to facilitate the extraction of orebodies. These development and production techniques can result in the creation of vertical open voids, which include stopes, orepasses, ventilation raises and other excavations. There are risks associated with the use of mobile plant in the vicinity of these voids, especially during backfilling and when bunds are constructed at the edge of a stope or void. These voids can present unacceptable risks if not adequately managed.

This paper proposes an approach to determine the influence of non-ideal detonation characteristics related to the charge diameter, explosive type and confinement conditions on the available shock energy of ANFO and a representative chemically-sensitised (gassed) emulsion. The proposed degrees of non-ideality of the two different blasting agents are indicated by the Gurney ratios, determined from existing cylinder expansion testing data. The influence of the non-ideal detonation properties on blast design and performance are also compared using a series of theoretical, equal powder factor open pit blasting patterns with hole diameters ranging from 102 mm to 270 mm. The non-ideal shock energy factor (NSEF), which is the available shock energy per tonne of blasted material (MJ/t), is used to compare the different blasting patterns as charged with either ANFO or the gassed emulsion of equal charge density (0.85 g/cm3). The intended purpose of this investigation is to provide explosive users with an approach to compare different explosive types or charge diameters in the absence of dedicated non-ideal detonation modelling, which is generally not available to explosives users.The results of the comparisons suggest that at low charge densities, the example gassed emulsion displays a higher velocity of detonation (VOD) than ANFO in smaller charge diameters but similar degrees of non-ideality (based on proposed Gurney ratios). The results also suggest that the confined, non-ideal gassed emulsion VOD at hole diameters greater than 270 mm can be less than ANFO due to the low density effects on the emulsion matrix. The differences in non-ideal detonation properties and Gurney ratios between the ANFO and gassed emulsion resulted in gassed emulsion NSEF values ranging from 15 per cent lower to 65 per cent higher than ANFO for equal powder-factor patterns in blasthole diameters from 102 mm to 270 mm.

Waste lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are important secondary sources of many valuable materials, including Critical Raw Materials (CRMs) defined by the European Union (EU): lithium, cobalt, manganese, and graphite. Additionally, LIBs typically contain nickel and copper, which are classified as Strategic Raw Materials for EU since 2023. In recent years, great effort has been made to develop efficient recycling processes for waste LIBs. Pyrometallurgical processes have been essential in industrial production of metals for many decades. These technologies are relatively mature, with high adaptability for different raw materials. Pyrometallurgical treatment in LIB recycling typically involves the use of smelting processes, in which waste batteries are heated above their melting points and metals are separated through a reduction reaction in the liquid phase. Through this recycling route, cobalt, copper, and nickel can be efficiently recovered in the form of a metal alloy, whereas lithium and manganese are lost in the slag phase. The goal of this work was to increase the recoveries of valuable battery metals through a combination of hydro- and pyrometallurgical unit operations. First, industrial Li-ion battery scrap underwent a selective sulfation roasting stage, where the aim was to transform LiCoO2 and Mn-oxides into Li, Co and Mn sulfates. After roasting, the battery scrap was leached in distilled water with a solid to liquid ratio of 100 g/L at 60°C and recovered 95 per cent of Li, 61 per cent of Mn and 35 per cent of Co. After leaching, the solid leach residue was mixed with industrial Ni-slag and biochar, followed by reduction at 1350°C in argon atmosphere. The high-temperature smelting experiments were conducted as a function of time (5–60 mins) to investigate the reduction behaviour of battery metals. The results show that Co and Ni from the slag and leach residue can be efficiently recovered in the slag cleaning stage.

The Westmoreland uranium deposits occur on the northern flank of the Murphy Tectonic Ridge in the upper member of the Westmoreland Conglom- erate. Uranium mineralization is spatially associated with the contact of the overlying basaltic Siegal Volcanics and the margins of in- trusive dolerite dykes which are geochemically similar to the Siegal Volcanics. Thermoluminescence (TL) measurements on 800 samples from within the orebodies and surr- ounding host rock (up to 8 kilometres away from the deposits) have indicated that all of the Westmoreland Conglomerate has suffered major radiation damagg attributable to at least 10 ppm uranium over 10 years. The underlying rhyolitic Mid Proterozoic Cliffdale Volcanics have distinctive TL glow curves indicative of radiation sensitization caused by high uranium contents. These vol- canics are part of the Mid Proterozoic volcanic event known to be enriched in uranium. The Westmoreland Conglomerate has been derived by erosion of the uranium-rich Cliffdale Volcanics and associated Nicholson Granite Complex which makes it likely that the Westmoreland Conglom- erate had a high inherent uranium content.

The O.K. deposit occurs within a belt of cherts and spilitised basic volcanics near the western margin of the Hodgkinson Province. The tabular to lenticular shape and gross conformability of the ore bodies; the common occurrence of colloform, framboidal and banded textures in the ores; the lack of significant alteration adjacent to the massive ore horizons and the apparent restriction of stockwork mineralization to the foot-wall side of the massive ore zone at the O.K. mine, all favour a syngenetic origin for the massive sulfide bodies. Furthermore, the micro- structural evidence suggests that the ores have undergone the same deformational history as the country rocks. The invariable association of the ores with spilites; the S isotope values and Co-Ni contents of the pyrites, together with the primitive metal assemblage (Fe, Cu, minor Zn) strongly favour a basic magmatic source for the sulfides. It is suggested-that the sulfides were probably precipitated sub aqueous- ly during a hiatus in volcanic activity. The O.K. deposit is of the cupreous pyrite variety, but unlike other well known occurrences of this type, it does not con- stitute part of an ophiolite complex. In sizing of wet coal by the horizontal vibrating screen, screen openings to be used is much restricted, because coal is sticky and its bulk density is little. The electrically heated screen and other various types of screen had been tried to screen raw coal and coal as raw materials at a few mm. However, they failed to realize satisfactory results. On the other hand, fine sizing of coal is requested by many fields. For example, raw coal is desired to be screened at the fine rate, before being fed to the coal preparation control system in order to transport undersizes as unprepared coal particles and to reduce load in coal preparation waste water treatment system.1) Coals fed to the fluidized bed boiler also should be sized at a few mm. Regardless of many requests on fine sizing of coal, it seems that there are many cases to omit the basic screening process, because the screening is very difficult on a industrial scale. Size control as pretreatment of coal as raw materials is presented as one of the basic screening processes. In 1979, Kinki Industrial Co., Ltd. and Nippon Steel Corporation jointly succeeded in developing the vertical centrifugal screen. Closed -circuit crushing system by the use of this screen has operated actually at N.S.C, Hirbhata .Works, and realized the anticipated result. Consequently, this system has established the position as the most basic technology in the coal preparation. 2), 3), 4) This system has been also introduced to Nakayama Steel Works, Ltd. in 1982. This system termed the CPC (Coal Preparation Control) Process has been operated smoothly in both N.S.C. and Nakayama. The distinction of my fellow participants is evidence that this event is a matter of extreme importance and attracts international attention. In the management of natural resources, government and private enterprise share awesome responsibilities for the economic well-being of nations. Mining and its relation to the prosperity of nations is almost as old as recorded history. Copper was being mined and extractive metal- lurgy practised at Timna in Israel's southern desert as far back as 4000 B.C., and the rich mines of Laurium not only saved the Greeks from Persian domination 2500 years ago, but also provided Athens with a monopoly of silver in the Mediterranean world. This bolstered the economic power of Athens and led to the golden age of Greek commerce and culture.

A mine project combines vast amounts of information from various disciplines including but not limited to geology, mining, metallurgy, technology, environment and economics. In many cases, all relevant information is not fully shared between all disciplines. Thus, project performance (technical, economical and sustainability) may be evaluated on basis of insufficient information resulting in non-optimal decisions, project execution and risk management. Advances in computing power and simulation software enable various data sets to be incorporated in a single digital platform enabling more efficient and transparent data sharing. In addition, linked data sets and simulation can support assessment and optimization of the project as a whole rather than focusing on optimization of individual events. WINDING engines are one of the most important units in the equipment of a mine. Upon the winding machinery depends not only the output of the mine, but it supplies in most cases the only means by which workmen enter and return from the mine, and consequently the utmost care and attention is desirable in its design. The efficiency of a direct acting winding engine, as a machine is very low. In other words, the proportion between the useful work performed and the actual work the engine is capable of performing (under the most favourable conditions) is very small. The reasons for this are:-1. The intermittent nature of the work; the engine is stopped from 20 to 25 %(or even more) of the time which would constitute a useful day's work.2. The large amount of power that is absorbed applying the brakes to bring the load to rest.3. That the net useful load raised is small in comparison with dead load to be lifted, and the parts to be set in motion.4. That, owing to the frequent stops, initial condensation in the cylinders is always greater than in a continuously running engine, whilst radiation from steam pipes, valve chests, &c., goes on whether the engine is running or...

Methane is present in varying degrees in nearly all underground coal mining operations. At mixtures with air near 5-15% it is explosive and consequently since it is not usual for these levels of contamination to be reached in the general body of a mine ventilation system it is not unusual to experience it in specific places. On longwall faces the most used power loader is the shearer machine and because of its general shape, situation and operation it is likely that all the factors which are required to cause a frictional ignition can be present. This paper makes a general appreciation of the causes of these ignitions and methods which are and have been used to control these situations on and around these machines.

The Canada Centre for Mineral and Energy Technology (CANMET) /Calgary Coal Research Laboratory and the National Research Council in Ottawa established a joint working research group with industry to develop and test various computer models for application in surface coal mining operations in western Canada.The first part of the paper deals with the problems the group experienced during the past two years especially having model specification and requirements defined and understand site management practices.The second part of the paper deals with site specific development of general mine model for TransAlta Utilities' Highvale Mine in Alberta. Described here are the development of an interactive truck/shovel model for their three pit operation, selection and application of dragline model for tandem operation with the extended bench method, criteria for operational model of the five seams operation with selec-tive mining approach.

The Rock Mass Rating (RMR) and Rock Mass Strength (RMS) classification systems for jointed rock masses are briefly reviewed, with particular reference to their use in slope stability studies. A correlation is provided between the results obtained from the two classifications and an equation is presented tentatively defining the RMR value for long-term stable slope angles. The validity of the equation is discussed in general terms in the context of slope stability problems commonly encountered in Western Australian open pit gold mines.

The Blackwater Coal Mine is a modern open cut operation using large draglines for over- :)urden removal and shovels, loaders and trucks to mine and haul coal to the crushing and coal ?reparation plant. Operations at the mine are described in sequence following through overburden removal to the railing of product coal from the mine site. The close operating connection between the mine and washery, which results from the blending of raw coal into clean product via the qashplant bypass system, is stressed. Some features of special interest at Blackwater Mine, such as land reclamation and slope stability,are outlined.

The purpose of filtration in a gold reco- very plant is to separate the gold bearing liquid from the solids in the slurry. Some of the gold is inevitably lost due to incomplete separation. An investigation recently completed by the authors has brought to light a method of reducing such losses. In this investigation, the filtration pro- cess was represented by a steady-state mathema- tical model which took account of 14 indepen- dent variables and three parameters. One of the filters in the plant at West Driefontein Gold Mine in South Africa was isolated from the rest and fully instrumented. A computerized data acquisition system was installed close to the filter, and the data obtained from it served to test the model. Using the model together with an optimizing program, the optimum operating point for the filter as a function of throughput was found, and a control strategy developed to minimize the total gold losses in the filter plant.

The Eucla Basin in southern Australia is emerging as an important global source of zircon from heavy mineral sands. Understanding the geological evolution of the basin and movement of heavy minerals down peripheral paleovalleys and along paleocoastlines is essential to effectively refine exploration strategies for heavy minerals in the basin. Integration of geoscientific datasets in a Geographic Information System (GIS) environment has proved to be effective in reconstructing depositional environments along the Cenozoic basin margin and in tracing the buried paleorivers that once drained broad areas of the Archean-Paleoproterozoic Yilgarn and Gawler cratons, the dominantly Mesoproterozoic Musgrave and Albany-Fraser Provinces, and the Neoproterozoic-Early Paleozoic Officer Basin. Sea level highstands during the late Middle Eocene (39 - 36 Ma) are associated with formation of the Ooldea coastal barrier complex and the zircon-rich heavy mineral deposits at Jacinth, Ambrosia and Tripitaka. More extensive transgression during the Late Eocene (36 - 34 Ma) built the complex Barton shorelines that host the Cyclone deposit and the extensive ilmenite-dominated occurrences of the Barton West prospect. Multi-generation reworking of the source sands is indicated by the high proportion of deposits that are zircon-rich relative to titanium minerals. The age distribution of zircon grains in heavy mineral concentrates from the Ooldea and Barton barrier systems points to the Musgrave Province as the predominant ultimate zircon source. Paleorivers discharging along the northern basin margin presumably carried a sediment load that was then redistributed by easterly longshore drift to build the extensive coastal sand deposits along the northern and eastern basin margin. The south-eastern extension of these deposits was reworked during Miocene-Pliocene (15 - 2 Ma) times into a series of regressive strandlines that show angular discordance with the Eocene coastlines. This discordance is consistent with evidence for long-wavelength tilting of the Australian continent from Middle Miocene times, as the continent drifted toward a dynamic topographic low induced by convective mantle processes associated with the South East Asia subduction systems. The Dromedary and Gulliver’s deposits probably formed at this time. Ongoing research is focused on the geological features of the basin that influence heavy mineral transport, concentration and preservation, and the processes leading to deposits with high zircon content.

The Hellyer deposit, hosted in the Cambrian Mt Read Volcanics, displays features typical of volcanogenic massive sulphide orebodies. These include a well developed stringer zone, metal zonation within the orebody, a polymict volcaniclastic sequence flanking the deposit and a hangingwall alteration plume in overlying basaltic pillow laves.Mapping and core logging is very detailed in order to extract as much data as possible from the deposit and its host rocks. A geological log suitable for direct computer input was adopted shortly after the deposit's discovery.
