The existence of Gabal El Kahfa ring complex, located in the Eastern Desert of Egypt, has been ascertained from aeromagnetic and aeroradiometric survey data as well as by aerial photography. Two maps for -the net aerial radiometric measurements reduced to ground level and aerial magnetic data corrected for the regional normal gradient of the earth's magnetic field have been constructed. The aeroradioactivity data have been interpreted geologically and analyzed statistically to outline various radiometric units and compute their charac- teristic statistics. The ring complex showed a circular radiometric feature and yielded a radiometric mean background and a standard deviation of 6.48 and 0.89 pR/h respectively. Besides, the observations showed a normal distribution. The aeromagnetic data have been reduced to the north magnetic pole, then filtered to produce the regional-and residual-component maps. Statistical trend analysis was conducted for the tectonic linea- ments resulting from the three magnetic maps, to define the structural framework of the area under study. This statistical study proved the exis- tence of trends in the east-west, northwest-south- east, northeast-southwest and north-south directions. The ring complex is characterized by a circular magnetic feature, whose average relief is 2150 nT. It is included within a high east-west trending magnetic zone. The latter represents a deep-seated uplift or anticline which is bordered from all sides by some faults of different trends.

The Hail Creek coking coal deposits are situated in Central Queensland, inland from the port of Mackay. A joint venture of Australian and Japanese companies has been formed to examine the feasibility of developing these deposits for sale on the overseas markets. The project envisaged involves large scale mining operations and on site benefic- iation to wash the coal to marketable quality. Infrastructure items include a 140 kilometre railway to the coast, a port facility, and at Ilail Creek, power and water supplies, roads and communications, and accommodation for a substantial workforce. The need for town development and the responsibility for the development are established. The town planning implications of coal production at the rate of five million long tons of washed coal per annum from open cut and underground mines are considered. A procedure for estimating the size of the town is expounded and the town size is determined. The factors influencing site selection are explained and a site is suggested. A method of designing the town is described and comments are made on developmental aspects. Spaciousness and preservation featuring the natural environment will be the theme of the town development.

There exist many formulae for designing coal pillars. However, when applied to a given set of mining parameters, they lead to different pillar sizes and factors of safety. From the subsidence point of view, the pillars designed as protection pillars not only have to be stable, but also have to limit subsidence over them to a level acceptable to the structure being protected. The subsidence over a pillar of given width to height ratio depends upon the mining depth. A pillar may be stable, but the subsidence over it may be quite large and unacceptable for the structure. In many cases even though pillars may yield, they support the undermined strata and reduce surface subsidence. In addition, the yielding pillars eliminate peaks and troughs in the surface subsidence profile and reduce ground strains. In a given situation, whether a pillar yields or not depends primarily upon its width in relation to mining depth.

Computer software systems have been developed to assist in a wide range of specific mine planning and scheduling applications. In selecting appropriate systems for any mining operation it is apparent that certain features have particular advantages for each mine site. The ideal solution to this problem is to select a range of systems which best relate to sections of each mining operation. This approach raises potential data linking difficulties where output from one system is incompatible with input requirements for other systems. A study at the University of Queensland investigated the problems related to the integration of a number of mine planning and scheduling software systems. The project used data from large scale coal strip mining operations in Central Queensland. Two major computer packages used extensively in the study were the SURPAC mine planning and XPAC mine scheduling systems. Dragline and truck and shovel operations were analysed in the project. Results of the work have been directly applied at the mine site to assist current strip design by effectively automating the design procedure. This enabled sensitivity studies to determine the effects of changing dragline working levels and varying pit dimensions. Coal blending studies and procedures to optimise operations have been investigated using linear programming within a spreadsheet software application. Output from the SURPAC and XPAC programs was directly linked to the linear program for this analysis. The simulation program GPSS/PC was also used in a similar manner to assess optimisation parameters.

The Selwyn Gold-Copper Mine is located 150 km southeast of Mount Isa within Proterozoic units of the Mount Isa inlier (Figure 1). Mineralization in the mine area is associated with strongly sheared ironstones and iron rich schists at the base of the mid- Proterozoic Staveley Formation. The ironstone horizons outcrop as a series of dominant ridges over a 10 km strike. Economic gold-copper mineralization has been defined in 4 separate zones within a 3.5 km length of the outcropping ridges. A current combined geological resource for the deposits is 5.3 million tonnes of 5.0 g/t Au and 2.02 Cu. Weathering of the deposits has resulted in a pronounced vertical zonation of mineralogy, especially copper, within the ore zones. This has produced 3 separate ore types which require different treatment techniques. The categorization is based on copper content and zones are termed leached (surface), oxide and sulfide. Ore removed from the pits will be mainly leached and oxidized with minor sulfide near the pits final depths, while the underground ore will be from the sulfide zone with minor oxide in some areas.

The challenges facing the iron and steel industry on a global scale include depletion of resources, excessive energy consumption and CO2 emissions. The demand for iron products in Zimbabwe is increasing due to massive infrastructural development like the expansion and improvement of mines, transportation systems and water reticulation systems. In Zimbabwe, cast iron is mainly produced from recycling scrap metals. However, there is currently a shortage of scrap, which has resulted in the vandalism of state-owned properties such as bus terminals and railway wagons and lines. Nevertheless, Zimbabwe is rich in limonite ores, which are idle, and it is the aim of this research that this ore be effectively used to produce feed for the blast furnace. The Blast furnace is still the dominant route for producing cast iron where sintering and coking processes are the main routes for preparing the Blast furnace feed. Sintering limonite ore fines produce a product of poor grade because of the high value of loss on ignition that has a negative impact on Blast furnace efficiency. Furthermore, the sinter plant and the coke making plant are a source of huge environmental pollutants. Since low-grade Zimbabwean coal fines are also available in abundance, they were used in the preparation of the composite materials ensuring maximum utilisation of this resource. Results showed that the limonite ore-carbon composite pellets sample with the binary basicity ratio (CaO/SiO2) of about 0.27 and coal addition of 2.5 wt per cent achieved above the minimum physical quality requirements for pellet of drop number of at least 4, a dry compression strength greater than 2.2 kg/pellet and an indurated compression strength greater than 250 kg/pellet. Limestone was used as the binder avoiding the addition of more impurities from bentonite since the limonite ore has a high SiO2 content of about 8.78 wt per cent.

OWING to two large falls of ground which resulted in serious accidents occurring towards the end of 1908, it became evident that the "open chamber" system then in use was unsuitable for the conditions existing in the Mount Morgan mine. It will be admitted that in all mining operations the first consideration is the economy of the system adopted, combined with its safety and ability to give the desired output. A sectional system with square sets has been introduced into the mine, in which due attention has been paid to these factors. In this paper a brief description of this system will be given. An outline of those previously used will be included, as it is necessary to understand the conditions which existed in the mine at the initiation of the sectional system. Outside the actual mining methods employed, various points that might prove of interest will be touched on.The square set system of mining has been in use throughout, the stopes in the gold ore in the upper levels of the mine since underground operations were started in Mount Morgan. In the oxidized zone the ore was of a friable nature, and in some cases rImning ground was encountered. In the lower levels the ground became heavier, and although the stopes were for the most part long, wide, high, and irregular, and not sectionalized, no difficulty was experienced in winning the ore, and no accident of a serious...

Mine management has a responsibility under the various acts of state parliaments for the adequate ventilation of existing workings. It also has a need to plan adequately for the ventilation of proposed workings. Future workings alternatives have become progressively more complex and ventilation planning of the various possibilities must be undertaken within an atmosphere of rapidly changing market circumstances, etc. Any non-optimal solution will prove more expensive than necessary on both capital and cost bases. Clearly these increasing and alternative ventilation demands of coal mines in Australia have multiplied the work load of ventilation engineers. NQ Minerals PLC, through Hellyer Gold Mines Pty Ltd, plans to reprocess the contents of the Hellyer tailings dam to produce lead/silver concentrate, zinc concentrate and pyrite concentrate (containing Au and Ag). This paper discusses the project development, mineralogy, metallurgy and chemistry of processing Hellyer tailings and the associated environmental benefits. The Hellyer and Fossey orebodies were volcanic hosted polymetallic massive sulphide deposits located within the Mount Read volcanic arc of western Tasmania. Mineralisation was hosted in massive sulphide (pyrite) and comprised predominantly of sphalerite, with lesser galena, chalcopyrite and arsenopyrite. The Hellyer orebody was mineralogically complex (fine grained) and was treated through differential flotation with initially modest recoveries. Fossey ore processing characteristics were similar to those of Que River ore and simpler than Hellyer but treatment still resulted in significant grades in flotation tailings. A pyritic gold concentrate from the Golden Mile, Kalgoorlie, was roasted over a range of temperatures in a pilot scale fluid bed reactor. The calcines were subsequently cyanide leached. Mineralogical studies of the con- centrate, calcines and leached residues were also undertaken. Calcines produced at 500'C gave the poorest gold extractions and high cyanide consumptions. Gold recoveries of approximately 90 per cent were obtained from calcines produced at 550-600'C but higher roasting tempera- tures resulted in an increase in the residual gold content of the leached calcine. There is some evidence of flash smelting of the pyrite at the higher roasting temperatures and encapsulation of gold particles. Mineralogical examination of the calcines shows that the mechanism of oxidation is temperature dependent. At 500'C pyrite is directly oxidized to hematite with a concentric layered texture which appears to inhibit lixiviant access to enclosed gold particles. At higher temperatures the conversion sequence pyrite-pyrrhotite-hematite produces a spongy calcine which al- lows easier penetration by the leaching medium.

Research on gas distribution in the iron- making blast furnace has been conducted in three separate areas. Firstly, experimental work has been conducted to determine the important parameters which dictate the pressure losses in homogeneous and heterogen- eous packed beds. Secondly, a theoretical analysis of gas flow through the furnace softening-melting zone has been undertaken to determine the effect of the shape of the zone on the distribution of gas flow towards the furnace walls. Thirdly, a theoretical programme has been undertaken to develop methods for the prediction of furnace soften- ing-melting zone shape from furnace tempera- ture and gas composition measurements.

Operating difficulties during 1977 with the Imperial Smelting Furnace operated by Sulphide Corporation Pty. Limited at their Cockle Creek zinc-lead smelter were found to be caused by premature softening of sinter in the upper shaft of the furnace. This soft- ening was shown to be a consequence of raw materials and operating policies which led to unusually high levels of both lead and silica in a sinter of low basicity. A programme of softening tests and micro-examination of a range of sinters established that premature softening occurred when lead and silica increased to the point where a lead-calcium silicate with a low lime content became the major continuous phase in the sinter. This information was used to define a range of compositions which kept the softening temperature acceptably high for furnace operations.

The blasting process involves a complex interaction of a delayed sequence of moving sources of seismic energy which produce nonlinear behaviour near the blast holes. A deterministic description of this nonlinear behaviour represents a formidable problem. The modelling of blast vibrations remote from the blast source may use some of the primary features of the blast design such as charge type, charge weight and initiation sequence. Such modelling of blast vibrations usually assumes linear behaviour remote from the blast holes. Site specific charge weight scaling laws may be used to predict the blast vibration levels with relatively poor accuracy. An important ingredient which is missing from charge weight scaling laws is the seismic source wavelet emanating from each blast hole. The present paper considers some approaches which may be used to determine a suitable source wavelet. The wavelets are suitable for use in the region where linearity may be assumed. In that region, it is possible to model the attenuation and scattering of the seismic wave as it propagates from the blast source to the measurement location.

A prototype version of a computer controll- ed on-line scanning electron microscope image analyser, employing the real-time signals ob tamed by digital control of the electron beam has been used to obtain statistical quantificat lion of a wide range of mineral grain character istics, including composition, size distribut- ion, and degree of liberation. These propert lies have been determined for suites of whole particles of flotation concentrates, mounted without further preparation. The facility is also well adapted to the measurement of general Istereological parameters. The computer control software is based on an operating system which includes the device drivers and which is linked to FORTRAN programs [containing the procedural algorithms. Over the last three million years, porphyry and epithermal mineralisation in the Baguio Mineral District has been driven by calc-alkaline magmatism associated with the subduction of the South China Sea plate and the Scarborough seamounts beneath northern Luzon, Philippines. Coupled with extreme uplift and exhumation rates, mineralisation in the Baguio District has been responsible for the emplacement of over 922 million grams of gold. As one of the oldest intrusive bodies associated with the Baguio District, the Black Mountain Cu-Au deposit consists of at least five intrusive phases overprinted by potassic and propylitic alteration and sulfide mineralisation. Gold ore grades are low and molybdenum grades high with respect to other porphyry Cu-Au deposits in the Baguio Mineral District. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. The United States has more than 45 billion tons of economic coal reserves in seams above 10 feet thick and current underground production from thick seams represent less than three per cent of the total production. A tripling of underground production from thick seams is necessary within the next 10 years to meet U.S. coal production demands. An analysis of underground accident and production data is presented in the paper. A study of accident and injury distribution in different coal seam heights in the eastern and western part of the United States in seams ranging in thicknesses from 5 to 15 feet indicates that the seam thicknesses do not produce adverse impact on underground injury incidence. Accidents associated with roof falls and haulage account for about 70 per cent of underground mining injuries.

Since the initial discovery of phosphate rock resources in North West Queensland in 1966, significant changes in ownership and development direction have occurred. Initially development of the resource involved beneficiation to produce a more saleable grade of phosphate rock. However more recently development has focused on the production of a high analysis fertilizer product on the minesite. These changes have been influenced by economics, industry/government cooperation and a changing phosphate industry.

Assessment of mineral reserves in any ore- body hinges on both mineralisation characteris- tics and the economics of extraction. The mineral reserves statement depends on interpre- tation of diamond drill information by geolo- gists, determination of the production plan and operating costs by mining and metallurgical engineers and prediction of future income by economists. The techniques used to generate the mineral reserves statement for Bougainville Copper Limited in 1969 are described and the accuracy of predictions discussed. Preliminary results from a geostatistical reassessment are comp- ared with the ore zone model, blast hole data and concentrator reconciled production results.
