The global mining industry is perceived to be a world leader in sustainability reporting û with a 2008 Ernst & Young survey placing four mining companies in their top five performers in sustainability reporting in South Africa. There is certainly good evidence to support this finding, but there remain many ongoing issues with respect to sustainability reporting and some important areas for improvement by mining companies globally. This paper begins with a broad (but brief) review of sustainability and the technical basis for reporting against a wide range of typical indicators or measures on the environmental aspects of mining. The various protocols, frameworks or systems are then reviewed, with a particular focus on the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and its associated mining sector supplement (including the evolution from environmental to sustainability reporting). A wide-ranging survey of reporting by mining companies is presented, including detailed analysis of 2007 and some commodity sectors over time. Examples of reported data are synthesised and analysed, focusing on their accuracy, consistency and utility for accurate assessment of the life cycle impacts for minerals and metals. A number of areas are identified for improved reporting by all mining companies, including water resources and consumption, energy consumption, process inputs (eg acids, solvents, etc), pollutant emissions, including greenhouse emissions, mine site data (not aggregate company totals) and finally rehabilitation and land status. Given the nature of mining, and considering parallels between æpeak oilÆ and the mining sector, it is critical that the state of sustainability reporting continue to evolve and improve û both in the number of companies using the GRI but also in the level and consistency of data being reported. Overall, the paper presents an important review of the present state of the art in sustainability reporting for mining, and provides a range of insights into ways to help improve reporting in the future for all mining companies.

The constructionhunnelling industry in Hong Kong has taken an upturn during the last few years due to the commencement of works to relocate the International Airport to Chek Lap Kok Island. The Airport Core Program consists of ten individual projects including roads, landfill, bridges and tunnels to build the airport and link it to the mainland of Hong Kong. Part of one of these projects is Cheung Ching Tunnel located on Tsing Yi Island. The proposed tunnel consists of a 1.6 km twin tube road tunnel through the island's central ridge, taking three lanes of traffic each way. Each tunnel is 16 m wide - (the widest road tunnel in Hong Kong) and are 10 m high. ICI Explosives (China) saw an opportunity to supply bulk explosives to the Cheung Ching tunnel and contacted ICI Australia to determine availability of a bulk system for tunnel blasting, and assist in its introduction. This paper discusses the methodology behind developing that bulk system to suit a large tunnel drill and blast operation. It also looks at the problems encountered along the way, from the development of the product to the application of the system in the tunnel and the eventual success of introducing a bulk system into a large tunnelling project.

Organisations which consistently perform to high success levels do so because they plan it that way. By using tools of total quality management, the potential to continually improve all safety processes exists. The successful integration of total quality measurement principles used in the improvement of safety processes, and the measurement of performance-based activities allow for prevention of accident causing scenarios and performance improvement.

Blasting in the mining industry is being transformed, and can no longer be treated as an art or a practice purely dependent upon experiences of individuals. Examples of key drivers that have demanded consistent and more accurate blast results are initiatives to control pit-wall damage to help mine steeper pit slope angles, to control damage to underground opening operating in close vicinity of the open pit mine. Such situation exists at Rampura Agucha open pit lead zinc mine, which is producing 5.7 Mt/a of ore and has started its underground part, which is slated to produce initially 2–2.4 Mt/a and 4.5 Mt/a in the near future. The open pit mine is currently working at 326 m depth and is designed to reach 421 m deep. It has been planned to operate the underground mine maintaining 50 m parting from the planned ultimate level of the open pit mine.Presently, open pit and underground mines are being operated simultaneously. The present average depth of underground working lies between 370 and 410 m below the surface level. Sometimes explosives up to 95 978 kg are being detonated in a blast round in open pit mine. These blasts are often apprehended as a danger to the safety and stability of underground openings. It was decided to document the impact of open pit blasting in the openings of underground workings, so that preventive measures may be taken for the safety and long-term stability of the underground mine. The impact of 86 open pit blasts has been documented in the underground openings and 258 blast vibration data has been recorded. The vibrations were recorded simultaneously in the roof, side walls and at floor levels. The highest levels of vibrations were recorded in the roof and the lowest levels at the corresponding floor levels. The pillars experienced lower level of vibrations than the roof. Blast designs were optimised at open pit mine to control vibration in view of long-term safety and stability of the underground openings. The vibrations generated due to detonation of explosives with shock tubes and electronic delay detonators have been recorded in underground openings for comparative assessment. Ground vibration recorded at roof, pillar and floor were analysed separately and threshold value of the vibration for the safety of underground workings has been determined based on the rock mass rating of the roof rock.CITATION:Singh, P K, Roy, M P, Paswan, R K, Shekhawat, L S and Joshi, A, 2015. "An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Frieda River Project is located in the north-west of Papua New Guinea. The target commodities for a bulk mining operation are copper and gold associated with a large felsic porphyry system. The project comprises a series of deposits, with the Horse-Ivaal-Trukai (HIT) being the largest. It also includes the adjacent smaller Koki and Ekwai deposits.Previous resource estimates for the HIT were made using 14 separate mineralised domains based on structure, copper grades, lithology and alteration. H&S Consultants (H&SC) has revisited the deposit and concluded that a simpler methodology could be used for resource estimation without using wireframes as hard domain boundaries. This conclusion is based on reviewing all the available geological data combined with geological and resource experience of porphyry deposits.It is generally acknowledged that porphyry deposits form by diffusion of mineralising fluids through the host lithologies, meaning that sharp boundaries are unlikely unless these fluids encounter specific physical or chemical boundaries. It is important to prepare a comprehensive geological model prior to attempting resource estimation as it forms the framework for the estimates; however, not all geological features may be relevant to the distribution of mineralisation and there can be a tendency to overcomplicate the estimation process by using too many domains. Unless a hard boundary can be identified consistently and unequivocally, it is generally better not to use a boundary in that location.H&SC completed unconstrained models with no top-cutting using both a simple flat search ellipse and a steep search ellipse to generate global resource estimates reported within a predetermined pit shell at a 0.2 per cent copper cut-off. Both outcomes are within 10 per cent for the tonnes, contained copper tonnes and gold ounces compared to the constrained resource estimate. Mathematical modelling was carried out to determine the probable convergence and vertical stress patterns around a retreating longwall panel in an underground coal mine in New South Wales. An 'Electrical Resistance Analogue' and a program called 'THREED' based on the displacement discontinuity method were used for the modelling. Parts of the obtained results are presented here and compared with some measurements of convergence at the site. The modelled and measured data agree better qualitatively, than quantitatively.

RedrossThe Redross orebody averages 1 m wide, has a strike of 50 - 350 m, dips at 55° and has a basalt footwall and an ultramafic hanging wall. The most successful and innovative aspects of mining Redross were:•ore development innovations, 90 per cent of development was split fired with a shanty back profile to enable larger and more productive equipment to be used and resulted in higher development grades, improved project payback time and improved ore recovery;•hand held stoping using a multiple level, bottom up ‘V’ shaped hand held stoping method that allowed mining on multiple levels with hand held productivities between 50 and 90 tonnes per shift;•the use of 1 m cement pillars and 7 m high crown pillars were used to create multiple mining areas that enabled high overall production rates from hand held mining this orebody; and•the use of vertical cement pillars to enable hand held mining of adjacent stopes without leaving ore pillars.MarinersThe Mariners orebody averages 3 m wide, has a strike length of 50 - 250 m and dips at 50° with a basalt footwall and poor ultramafic hanging wall. The most successful innovative ideas of re-opening Mariners were:•Dewatering the existing mine workings utilising ‘oilfield’ technology by installing a long submersible pump in on existing pump rising main. This enabled the mine to be dewatered at rates up to 100l/ sec and helped overcome the 45 to 55 L/s inflows.•Overcoming the technical problems associated with Mining N07 ore blocks which had severely deteriorated from being underwater for five years by using reverse firing techniques to improve extraction rates and reduce dilution.•Mass firing a large mining block in the N08 with minimal void space because of deteriorating ground conditions.•Use of a longhole version of the Redross hand held mining method to achieve 100 per cent extraction of the N09 higher grade lenses.

Decarbonising explosives manufacturing and catalysing low-carbon mining supply is a significant global challenge. Low-carbon manufacturing precincts – clusters of geographically close businesses across multiple industries that share a goal of adopting firmed renewable energy and decarbonising process emissions – offer one potential solution. In an Australian first, Orica commissioned tertiary catalyst abatement technology in 2023 to mitigate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions at its Kooragang Island (KI) facility in New South Wales (NSW), Australia. The EnviNOx® technology (ThyssenKrupp Industrial Solutions AG, Dortmund, Germany) used reduces nitrous oxide (N2O), a potent greenhouse gas arising as a by-product of nitric acid manufacture. As a result, mining customers in NSW are now benefitting from ammonium nitrate (AN) products that are almost 50 per cent less emissions-intensive than those Orica previously offered. The $37 million project is a private-public partnership that has involved partners across Federal and State government, global engineering and technology vendors, local community groups and local carbon advisors to overcome financial barriers.

Standards in the public reporting of resources and reserves in Australia have dramatically improved since the implementation of the Australasian Code for Reporting of Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves (The JORC Code) in 1989. Whilst the JORC Code states clearly that Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves are imprecise calculations and should be treated as estimates, there is strong evidence that many people regard them as fact, including some accountants, directors, auditors and investors. Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves are key inputs in the valuation of a mining company and the determination of financial performance. Geological knowledge is the foundation upon which Mineral Resources, Ore Reserves and investment decisions are made, however this information carries with it substantial uncertainty. Case studies and company reports have established that errors derived from inadequate geological inputs have led to reduced profitability in operating mines and in extreme cases the premature closure of mine operations. Whilst there are many causes of mine closure and reduced profitability, including commodity prices and exchange rates, the cumulative effect of all geological uncertainty contributes significantly to the erosion of the credibility of mining within the investment community. There are a number of methods used to characterise and model uncertainty in Mineral Resource and Ore Reserve estimation. Empirical mining indexes, sensitivity analyses, Monte Carlo simulations and Conditional simulations are used to identify and estimate geological uncertainty, notably the quantification of uncertainty in grade and tonnage estimates. These techniques have not generally been applied to estimating geological uncertainty associated with key Ore Reserve inputs such as appropriate mining technique, equipment selection, production rate, mining dilution, stability requirements, materials handling, metallurgical processing, product quality and waste storage. New software tools are needed to model the entire mining process with all its geological and other interdependencies, enabling all uncertainties to be separately identified and estimated. By its very nature, mining involves the assumption of significant technical, financial, political, environmental and social risk. Success comes by understanding and managing these risks and consequently the mining industry will never choose to reduce the level of geological uncertainty to nil. The ultimate aim of improved identification and estimation of geological uncertainty is to quantify inputs into the Ore Reserve process, allowing a company to assess the risks and manage these accordingly. This approach is relevant to feasibility studies for new projects as well as life-of-mine planning through to the weekly schedule at existing mines.

Hydraulic transport of coal has been used for many years on the West Coast of New Zealand to extract small blocks of steeply dipping coal. Recent development at Strongman 2 Mine has seen the use of high pressure monitors to cut coal and a corresponding increase in the scale of production.This paper provides a brief introduction to hydraulic mining, describes the present system used at Strongman 2 and discusses future potential development.

Barrick has successfully developed the thiosulfate leaching process to treat sulfidic high preg-robbing ores. The process was developed through rigorous bench test programs and proved in pilot campaigns and demo plant operations. The process uses calcium thiosulfate as a leaching reagent, resin for gold recovery with sulfite/trithionate elution and reverse osmosis as a mean of reagent recovery. The KSS Lead Plant (Kivcet - SNAMPROGETTI - SAMIM) of Por tovesme, owned by Nuova Samim (the sector-head Company for non ferrous metals and derivatives owned by ENI), has been operating since february 1987. This plant is based on the Soviet Kivcet licence and testwork carried out on the pilot plant of VNIITSVETMET in Ust Kameno gorsk fed by the Nuova Samim's concentrates. The plant is com pletely automatized using the most advanced technologies and it is operated by nineteen people on shift work, including all ancillary units and lead decopperizing-casting. The expected performance of the plant has been confirmed and improves day by day in relation of the operating experience, thanks to the new conceptual design of the furnace. Due to the remarkable flexi bility of the process, the integration of the lead plant with the other plants of the metallurgical complex of Portovesme rro-#4 (Electrolytic Zinc Plant, Sulphuric Acid Plant, Imperial Smel ting) has shown all the economic advantages. The lead content in the ambient air, detected by the monitors, either in the working area and on the ground outside the complex, is widely Pb W" below the stricter new limits recommanded by the E.E.C. (Economic European Community) rules and by the Italian law. The whole process is carried out in equipment completely closed and under suction and it does not require manual operations with exposure to the lead. The production cost is much lower than that performed by the traditional technology. This advantage permits wide margin to consider investment to replace the traditional technology.

This paper examines the practical limitations that affect the measurement of stress in rock. As most rock stress measurement is conducted through the invasive process of drilling a hole in a rock mass, the nature of the rock and its response to being drilled form the basis of the stress measurement process. The prime techniques to measure stress down a borehole are to conduct hydraulic fracturing and its variant hydrojacking, overcoring, and the examination of the borehole wall for breakout or tensile fracture. It is also possible in some circumstances to use the sonic velocity within the rock mass as an indicator of the stress situation. Other structural indicators of stress such as joints, faulting and intrusions are useful but may not reflect the current stress situation within the rock mass. The variability of stress within the rock mass also needs to be considered as it is quite unusual to have a monotonic stress situation throughout any rock mass. The outdated concept of measuring the far field stress in a few measurement for use in a numerical model is quite dangerous. It is essential to make multiple measurements and to generate an understanding of its distribution in some form of model before stress can sensibly be incorporated into underground design. The Highlands Region of Papua New Guinea has 3 major national highways. The locations of these national highways are shown in Figure 1. The Highlands Highway begins at Lae City on the coast and passes through the Highlands towns of Goroka, Kundiawa and Mt Hagen. It terminates at Togoba approximately 10km out of Mt Hagen town. The Enga Highway begins at Togoba and passes through the towns of Wapenamanda, Wabag and Laiagam. It terminates at the giant Porgera Gold Mine. The Southern Highlands Highway also begins at Togoba and passes through the major towns of Mendi, and Tari. It terminates at Koroba station, near the Hides Gas Field. Two separate Feeder roads intersecting the main highway service both the Kutubu Oil Project and the Hides Gas Field. These national Highways play a very important role in the development of Papua New Guinea. Goods and services are delivered to the bulk of the population of the Highlands Region using these highways. Heavy machinery and equipment for the mining and petroleum projects of Porgera, Hides and Kutubu are transported using these roads.

Changing haul requirements once again create the need for more flexible mechanical drive power transmission equipment. The new equip- ment however is designed to provide extended life between overhauls as compared with previous mechanical transmissions.

In 2012, in response to an increasing potential unfunded liability, the Western Australian Government passed the Mining Rehabilitation Fund Act 2012. The intent of this Act was to introduce an annual levy on tenements covered under the Mining Act 1978 based on the area of disturbed land. The fund generated from these levies could then be used to rehabilitate mining sites where all other options to ensure rehabilitation had been exhausted. The fund could also be used to rehabilitate abandoned sites or features which, in Western Australia, number over 10 000.The Mining Rehabilitation Fund (MRF) was implemented on 1 July 2013 for an initial voluntary year. It becomes compulsory on 1 July 2014. By the end of March 2014, nine months into the voluntary period, over $6.5 million had been paid into the fund. The incentive for tenement holders to voluntarily enter the fund was the opportunity to have unconditional performance bonds held against their tenements retired. While there will be circumstances where bonds will continue to be applied, it is the State Government’s intention to retire most of the bonds.The MRF has received mostly accolades from industry and companies that have entered. Most have found the system easy to use. The MRF was also cited as a reason for Western Australia’s improved position in the Fraser Institute’s annual survey of mining jurisdictions. Work is now starting on processes to select priority abandoned mines for rehabilitation.This paper explains the background to the MRF and its development, and reviews its implementation during the first, voluntary, year. It also discusses how the fund will be managed into the future and what this will mean for both abandoned mine features across Western Australia and any future abandoned mine sites.CITATION:Leybourne, M L, 2014. Approximately 2.4 million ounces of gold and 11.3 million ounces of silver have been produced from the Umuna Lode by Misima Mines Pty Limited between June 1989 and the end of Decemeber 1996. Reserves remaining at the end of December were 32.1 million tonnes at 1.0 gram per tonne gold and 9.7 grams per tonne silver. To attain precious metal production of this volume, an estimated K60,000,000 (1996 Kina) was spent on exploration alone. from the 1940s to the present day. Exploration expenditure for the 1996 calendar year was approximately K4,400,000. With such a large investment in exploration, large quantities of data were generated and stored in various forms. To make best use of this data, it was necessary to organise and systematically store this data in a form compatible with a modern Geographical Information System (GIS). The Umuna Lode on Misima Island is a low sulphidation gold- silver deposit dated at 3.5 ¦ 0.2 Ma. The deposit is controlled by the 50 to 100 metre wide Umuna Fault- a moderate dipping, brecciated clay- chlorite- carbonate altered, normal fault zone. There is approximately 230 metres of mostly dip slip offset on this fault, which is measurable by the offset of the Cretaceous schist, marble and greenstone host sequence. Late Miocene microdiorite spatially related to the Umuna Lode does not appear to be genetically related to the gold- silver mineralisation. GIS was introduced to Misima at the end of 1995 and until recently has been mostly used for data storage and retrieval, the over- laying of various data sets to assist in targeting prospective areas, and as a drafting tool. The use of data-driven, predictive data analysis is the most recent effort in maximising the use of the extensive Misima database. By characterising the key controls and properties of the Umuna- type mineralisation, a Weights of Evidence, data-driven analysis produced a prospectivity map of Misima Island. The purpose of this map was to identify prospective areas yet to be explored and to assess the effectiveness of exploration to date.

Computer simulation is a well accepted tool for modelling the behaviour of large and complex operating systems. It is a particularly useful technique in complex operations where there are multiple interactions between the inputs and outputs of various unit operations. It can be utilised during the early stages of a project as part of the business case definition phase or the early engineering phases, or alternatively to help understand the various options available in an upgrade or expansion. With the design of a new processing plant to handle a different ore type at Lihir Gold Limited (Lihir), there was concern that the existing conveying system could separately handle the increased tonnages. A simulation model was constructed which allowed Lihir to examine the impact on the conveying system of the new process plant, as well as investigate the effect of different trucking options. As is often the case, once the simulation model was built, further understanding of the downstream bottlenecks was able to be investigated, including the sizing of critical equipment.

Dump leaching at Teller in its present form began in the fourth quarter of 1988 as an adjunct to milling operations. Initial plans called for a dedicated dump leach facility capable of processing ore at an annual rate of 2.0 million tonnes. Construction of a dump leach pad, collection and process ponds, carbon adsorption system, elution plant as well as reagent addition and ancillary facilities was initiated in mid-1988. During the course of construction, additional reserves were proven. As a result, design throughput was increased to 4.0 Mtpa. Leach pad capacity and solution supply systems were upgraded to handle the larger throughput. However, the carbon adsorption/elution facilities were not upgraded due to space limitations. During 1990 it was decided to expand the dump leach operation to 6.0 Mtpa. Construction of a second leach pad was required which was initiated in early-1991. Plans were again upgraded prior to completion to a target annual throughput of 10.0 million tonnes was. A further two leach pads have been constructed. The first of these being completed during the latter part of 1992. Construction of the latest and largest pad commenced early in 1994.
