IN dealing with this subject the intention is not to write a detailed description of the various methods in vogue on the Kalgoorlie field, but rather to give a brief outline of three of the methods which are most universally in force, and from which, ultimately, a few comparisons may be drawn. The three methods which the writer proposes embodying in this article are known as "The Rill," "The Flatback," and "The Shrinkage." For comparative purposes each method will be applied to a block of ore 500 feet in length, and opened up by levels 200 feet apart."The Rin" System. It is necessary in this system, for facilitating mullocking, to make connections between levels by rising and winzing at about every 100 feet or 150 feet along the orebody. After the leading stope is beaten off for the full length ofthe drive, the level is timbered. Single stulls are put in up to a width of fourteen feet. If the span is too great for stulls, set timbers or saddleback stuUs are used. Stulls are lagged over with 4-in gimlet poles, and wooden chutes are built at intervals of 50-feet. Ore passes are cribbed up through the filling directly above each chute, and are constructed of 7-in. round timber or 9 in x 3 in square timber, the passes measuring 4 ft x 4 ft in the clear.Occasionally a double pass may be carried up, one side serving as a travelling way. "AustraliaÆs mining sector faces challenges to its competitiveness; operating costs are being adversely affected as a result of volatile commodity prices and growing international market pressures.Diesel fuel-generated power used in typical remote mining projects is generally reliable and quick-to-deploy; however it is ongoing expensive operating cost.Many mines and communities in remote locations source electricity from diesel generation, and often pay over $300/MWh in fuel and carbon only (i.e. excluding CAPEX). These costs are expected to rise over time and are vulnerable to price shock events or supply chain interruptions in international markets.Solar photovoltaic (PV) and other renewables can be integrated with existing diesel units to provide a highly reliable power supply. Such renewables now provide a cheaper source of electricity while maintaining the mining industryÆs stringent reliability requirements; some renewables are now cheaper than diesel power ù supplying electricity at approximately $226/MWh.Also, significant funding and concessional rate financing have recently become available to support the development of remote solar-diesel (or solar-wind-diesel) hybrid systems, including: up to $2.2 billion of as-yet uncommitted grants through the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) and is now seeking mining industry partners, up to $10 billion of concessional financing for emerging renewable technologies through the Clean Energy Finance Corporation (CEFC) and this commences July 2013, ongoing revenue support through the Renewable Energy Target scheme, and other regional support programs administered by various governments.This paper explores: the business case for renewables - what applications and when to consider them, the potential operating cost savings if solar was integrated, the technical challenges and common pitfalls, and how to overcome them, and the upfront investment costs and whether the site is eligible for Government subsidy programs.CITATION:Chambers, C, 2013. The first steps for in situ resource utilisation (ISRU) on target bodies such as the Moon, Mars and near-Earth asteroids (NEA), and even comets, involve the same sequence of steps as in the terrestrial mining of resources. First exploration including prospecting must occur, and then the resource must be acquired through excavation methods if it is of value. Subsequently a load-haul-dump sequence of events occurs, followed by processing of the resource in an ISRU plant, to produce useful commodities.While these technologies and related supporting operations are mature in terrestrial applications, they will be different in space since the environment and indigenous materials are different than on Earth. In addition, the equipment must be highly automated, since for the majority of the production cycle time, there will be no humans present to assist or intervene. This space mining equipment must withstand a harsh environment which includes vacuum, radical temperature swing cycles, highly abrasive lofted dust, electrostatic effects, van der Waals forces effects, galactic cosmic radiation, solar particle events, high thermal gradients when spanning sunlight terminators, steep slopes into craters / lava tubes and cryogenic temperatures as low as 40 K in permanently shadowed regions. In addition the equipment must be tele-operated from Earth or a local base where the crew is sheltered. If the tele-operation occurs from Earth then significant communications latency effects mandate the use of autonomous control systems in the mining equipment. While this is an extremely challenging engineering design scenario, it is also an opportunity, since the technologies developed in this endeavour could be used in the next generations of terrestrial mining equipment, in order to mine deeper, safer, more economical and with a higher degree of flexibility. New space technologies could precipitate new mining solutions here on Earth.The NASA Kennedy Space Center (KSC) Swamp Works is an innovation environment and methodology, with associated laboratories that use lean development methods and creativity-enhancing processes to invent and develop new solutions for space exploration. This paper will discuss the Swamp Works approach to developing space mining and resource extraction systems and the vision of space development it serves. The ultimate goal of the Swamp Works is to expand human civilisation into the solar system via the use of local resources utilisation. In March 2012 a combined BHP Billiton and Hatch team embarked on a program to improve the concentrate burner efficiency of BHP Billiton’s Olympic Dam copper flash smelting furnace. A multi-faceted approach including an analysis of the furnace using operational knowledge and first principles engineering led to the design and supply of a new central-lance (disperser). A new, patented, swirl method of introducing the copper concentrate into the furnace was developed to integrate with the existing concentrate burner. Plant trials in 2014 demonstrated an increase of nearly 10 percent in the oxygen efficiency of the furnace. In this address I look back over the past 40 years of mineral exploration in New Zealand û essentially the period since the Second World War (ie since 1945). It was the period of my personal involvement, and indeed of the personal involvement of a number of you. Luckily it was aperiod of great interest and activity. In the previous 50 years, virtually nothing had happened, and it is kindest to draw a veil over that period. In the very important earlier 40 years (1855 - 1895) the New Zealand gold rush occurred. That must have been a fascinating, rewarding period, which has been thoroughly documented by better historians than myself. I will simply comment firstly that its mineral explorers (gold-prospectors) were very successful indeed, and found most localities of the minerals they sought, in spite of using very different methods from ours of today. Secondly, they were preceeded by one of Maori exploration, which searched for a much restricted list of minerals, but succeeded in finding virtually every locality we know of today. The explorers of both of these early periods were obviously highly successful, but, in the time available, I must restrict myself to the period since 1945. I am currently editing the effective up-dating of Gordon WilliamsÆ 'Economic Geology of New Zealand' (1974). It covers the last 12 years or so. Many of you are contributing to that volume û both as authors and as referees û and I would like to take this opportunity of thanking you all. Although this new volume excludes the energy field, many of us have been involved in it, and I am therefore including energy minerals in this review, as Williams did in 1974.

Geochemical data on Australian granites and pegmatites, and the mineral components of these rocks, are compared with that obtained in similar studies in the U.S.S.R. and elsewhere.The geochemical character of tin granites and the trace chemistry of their component minerals, particularly biotites, have some significance as ore guides in prospecting for tin.The primary geochemical dispersion of tin can be readily tested both in the laboratory and field by colourimetric methods, after volatilization with ammonium iodide, using modifications of the method described by Wood (1958).Secondary dispersions of tin in residual soils or alluvia can likewise be readly tested by rapid colourimetric methods in the field, but simple hydraulic methods, handling larger sample volumes, give reliable outlines of dispersion patterns.INTRODUCTIONThe search for tin ores, whether lode or placer in type, is usually directed on genetic grounds to country within or adjoining acid intrusives.A long established means of prospecting is to test samples for cassiterite by panning or other hydraulic separation.These methods can be used on crushed lode material or the natural materials from placers.With the advent of new techniques for extraction and for colourimetric analysis for tin (Wood, 1958 and Ross and White, 1961) a means is available for rapid analysis of materials not susceptible to quantitative testing by hydraulic methods because of the fine sizings of cassiterite or the occurrence of tin structurally held in minerals. The new methods thus opened up the field of tin prospecting by extending the search for ore guides to genetically associated rocks and minerals, wall ror-ks of veins and a wider range of superficial deposits.

Upward pressure on all mining operations is coming from the triple bottom line. To some extent this is being offset by the rise in mineral prices, but this may or may not continue. The other serious issue facing all companies is the replacement of economic reserves as exploration levels over the past decade continued to decline in line with falling mineral prices. In order to underpin the sustainability of the mining industry it is necessary to continue to reduce cost, reduce the mine environmental footprint, whilst increasing community benefit. At the same time it is imperative that we increase the economic reserves. The highest risk is in adding new mineral discoveries as the strike rate for economic discovery decreases. Gekko Systems Pty Ltd recognises that the most simple and risk averse route to increasing economic reserves is to reduce cut-off grade in the mine, thereby bringing formerly uneconomic reserves into the economic category. We have been developing a new process flow sheet which embodies the triple bottom line and the issue of economic replacement of reserves. This paper describes this flow sheet and presents four examples where this concept is/can be applied to bring about triple bottom line benefits. Sustainability can only be assured if we are the ones in control of our environment, costs and reserves.

BM37 is a bonanza-grade (>30 ppm Au) ore shoot of the Maria Lode of the Karangahake adularia-sericite epithermal deposit in the southern Hauraki Goldfield. Samples from BM37 contain up to weight percent gold. The ore shoot is a vein that pinches and swells, but is typically tens of cm thick, and locally exceeds 0.5 m in true width. Gold occurs as irregular anhedral electrum grains that range up to 300 microns across and contain 38 to 59 wt per cent Au (ave. 52 wt per cent Au). Electrum occurs in sulphide-rich bands in association with pyrite, chalcopyrite, acanthite, galena, sphalerite, and local covellite. Lower grade samples contain local to rare mckinstryite [(Ag, Cu) 2S] and polybasite [(Ag, Cu) 16 (As, Sb) 2S11]. Pyrite from BM37 is nearly stoichiometric; it lacks the As that commonly occurs at up to percent levels in pyrite from other veins in the goldfield. Acanthite also contains low quantities of trace metals, and typically has less than 2.5 per cent Se. The vein shows complex textures. Bonanza grade sulphide-rich ginguro bands form discrete layers adjacent to the vein margins, and occur as breccia fragments encased by later massive to comb quartz with local quartz after platy calcite. Both the breccia fragments and ginguro bands are cross-cut by later quartz veins. Textures thus indicate that formation of the high-grade portions of BM37 resulted from one or more discrete events that differed markedly from the events that formed the bulk of the vein.

Permian coal seams from the Tomago Coal Measures in the Northern Coalfield, New South Wales, were analysed petrographically and reflectance measurements made for each. Vitrite contents were moderate to high for most of the coals but for two they were very low.The mineral-matter contents were low to moderate by Australian standards. Different profiles of a particular seam could be correlated by petrographic methods.Standard seam profiles were drawn up and from these an idealized Tomago seam sequence was compiled. All the coals were of high-volatile bituminous rank. Their carbon contents, but not thcir reflectances, varied significantly with the quantity of vitrinite present.

The following notes apply more especially to the purchase of silverlead ores produced in the neighbourhood of Zeehan and Dundas; for it is this class of ore that is principally mined in those parts, and which creates competition among the ore buyers.In the early days of this field, most of the ore passed through the hands of the first buyer who had sufficient enterprise to establish himself at Zeehan but in more recent times, competition has been so keen that there are generally three or four buyers tendering. lf the output was large this would not matter so much from the buyers' point of view but when we consider that the output of the field is only some 1,650 tons per month, and that of this 70 odd tons are produced by the Western and Montana mines, aud being sent home for realization, is withdrawn from local purchasers, there is really not enough for four buyers, especially at the present exorbitant prices they pay the miners.Some of the mines have a fixed sampling day, on which it is tacitly understood that the ore buyers will attend. Others, such as Grubb's Silver Mining Oompany, No-Liability, send round a printed reminder, stating the quantity of ore, and the date of sampling.

A.) : In congratulating Mr. Hooker upon his resume of Mr Parry's paper I have in mind the fact that he carried out the research into pipe pressures. Hydraulic filling as practised in Kalgoorlie has created world wide interest, with these pressures and percolation being vital points.Early in the 1950s, representatives of the Kolar field were conduGted over the local mines where stopes at depths below 2,000 ft were being filled. The problems of pipe pressures were their main consideration since depths of up to 10,000 ft were envisaged.Mr Krishnaiah and Mr Murthy from the same field are with us today and perhaps we may hear of their experiences with depths of 6,000 ft and long lateral lines.J. Holly (Lake View and Star Ltd., Fimiston, W.A.): There is one phase, which I would like to mention myself, that has been very evident in Kalgoorlie operations. That is, we do not get the percolation properties that are obtained on many other fields in the world, and our tendency here has been to assess the quality of our fill more by its settling rate, i.e. the rate at which we can draw off clear water at the surface of the filling levels, rather than the rate that this water percolates down through the fill before it consolidates.We are tending now to measure the quality of our fill as a settling rate rather than as a percolation rate.Americans talk about percolation rates being the important property: If anyone has any experience on operating with fills with different percolation rates, I think their views would be very interesting to the meeting art this stage. Automated multi-sensor core loggers (MSCL) measure petrophysical properties of diamond drill cores, including gamma density, P-wave velocity, electrical conductivity and magnetic susceptibility. A Geotek MSCL system has been used to record petrophysical data on archival drill core from Cadia East Au-Cu porphyry deposit, New South Wales, Australia, for correlation with metallurgical parameters. P-wave modulus, calculated from density and P-wave velocity, exhibits a correlation with small-scale crushability (A*b) test results, and hence offers a means for æcontinuousÆ characterisation of ore crushability at Cadia East. Magnetic susceptibility has proved to be a good indicator of alteration styles, and is a possible indicator of crushability.

The classification performance of a Dutch State Mines (DSM) Rapped Sieve Bend has been investigated in a series of experiments. Coal slurries of a nominal 0.5 mm size were classified in the separation range of 0.10 to 0.14 mm at pulp densities from 6 to 21 per cent by mass of solids, and flow rates of 110 to 1375 litre min-1.The results obtained showed that the partition curve and water split io oversize was dependent on the solids flow rather than slurry flow rate or pulp density. For most of the operating conditions considered an accurate classification of the fine coal was obtained. The undersize efficiency was susceptible to solids flow rate, and was less than 70 per cent for solids flow rates greater than 16.7 tonne hour-1 metre-1 width of screen.

Delivered at the University of Sydney, on June 4th, 1954.THE TORCH WE HOLDLast year Our Institute celebrated its Diamond Jubilee, coincident with the holding of the Fifth Empire Mining and Metallurigcal Congress in Australia and New Zealand. We can be proud of our growth over the 61 years since the inaugural meeting in Adelaide in April, 1893, which followed suggestions from a provisional committee of mining men, formed in 1892 in Broken Hill.We can also be proud of our technical achievements in the fields of economic geology, mining and metallurgy.Should we be content with the growth of our mining and metallurgical industries over these years? My answer is in the negative. The discovery of new mineral deposits is essential for the continuance and development of the industries we represent.Let me review the background and trends of our industry in an attempt to emphasise the changing factors influencing the search for minerals and their exploitation.Australia was blessed with the discovery of coal in New South Wales in 1796; copper in South Australia at Kapunda, Burra, Wallaroo and Moonta in the eighteen-forties; gold in Victoria and Eastern Australia in the 'fifties; tin at Mount Bischoff, Tasmania, and gold at Charters Towers, Queensland, in the 'seventies; lead-silver at Broken Hill, New South Wales; gold and copper at Mount Morgan, Queensland, and copper at Mount Lyell, Tasmania, in the 'eighties; and gold at Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, and zinc-lead atRosebery, Tasmania, in the 'nineties. The mining industry is the largest source of foreign income for South Africa. It is also the main source of employment in the country and, as an industry; it is also one of the largest. Due to the labour-intensive nature of the industry, labour costs in South African mines make up nearly 50 per cent of the total mine cost. It is thus imperative to have optimum labour planning and labour management systems in place.The focus of this study was to investigate current underground labour-planning models. It is shown that there are serious limitations. The range between an oversupply and undersupply of labour can be as high as ten per cent. A new system was therefore developed to ensure a constant labour demand and supply on a daily basis. One of the main objectives was to determine the existing labour supply range and thus the requirements to fill the undersupply. For this purpose, a specific methodology was designed to capture and process all the relevant information. Mine personnel was involved throughout the entire process to ensure ownership of the new model. This buy-in was achieved through planning workshops, interactive presentations and discussions. The improved frequency of daily blasts validated the new system by providing the correct amount and mix of the labour force. The new labour-planning model was then extended to optimise revenue. Implementation on a mine resulted in increased income of R95 million.

When Haematite Explorations Pty. Ltd. began prospecting for petroleum in 1960, there was only ill-defined geological evidence on the land bordering Bass Strait to support the belief that petroleum lay trapped in sedimentary formations beneath its shallow waters.A reconnaissance of the area, made in 1961 by the airborne magnetometer method, covered the waters and islands of the Strait and overlapped the Victorian and Tasmanian coasts. The survey indicated the presence of the Bass Basin (which is completely water-covered), assisted in outlining the Otway and Gippsland Basins, and showed that each basin contains sedimentary rocks over 10,000 ft thick. Information on the regional geology and minor volcanic activity was also obtained.Marine seismic surveys carried out from 1962 to 1965 defined these basins more accurately and showed the nature and structure of the thick sedimentary sections.Correlation of the seismic data with onshore wells identified the sediments as Tertiary and Mesozoic. Subdivisions of the former in all basins and the latter in the Otway Basin were made. These Tertiary and Mesozoic rocks are not seriously deformed and they have good prospects of containing petroleum.Possible structural and stratigraphic traps, recognized from the seismic record sections by petroleum geologists, are being tested by offshore drilling which began in 1964.

Geological maps, data, and prospectivity analysis relevant to mineral exploration in New Zealand have recently been released. Regional-scale geological mapping is increasingly available for the country through the QMAP 1:250 000 Geological Map of New Zealand programme. Published QMAP sheets Greymouth, Wakatipu, Waitaki and Dunedin cover large areas of interest for mineral exploration companies. The QMAP geological data are also available in digital form for use with other digital datasets using GIS software. Crown Minerals, in cooperation with GNS, have completed two gold prospectivity studies; the first covering mesothermal gold in the South Island, and the second encompassing epithermal gold in northern New Zealand. These studies have defined areas of interest for these two mineralisation types and assembled geological, mineral occurrence and production, geochemical, geophysical, topographic and cultural data into projects for use with GIS software. Included are the results of prospectivity modeling for gold using these data and specific mineralisation models. The prospectivity studies and relevant data are freely available on CD through Crown Minerals and are intended to encourage mineral exploration in New Zealand.

In June 2012, Lucara Diamond Corporation officially commissioned its Karowe Diamond Mine in Letlhakane, Botswana. The processing plant circuit incorporates variable speed autogeneous milling, a first for African diamond processing - only previously practiced in Russia. The paper discusses the basis for the selection of milling against the more traditional circuits incorporating crushing and scrubbing. It covers early commissioning challenges of operating a mill in an æalien environmentÆ with no immediate reference plant to look up to for bench-marking.The paper describes how these challenges were overcome and learnings quickly incorporated into the mill operating philosophy for maximum diamond liberation and minimum product damage. The plant was commissioned in three months and by August 2012 the production ramp up had reached name-plate capacity. The feed to the mill has varied from highly weathered material to extremely hard kimberlite and the operating philosophy had to be optimised for the full range of ore types. While more work is required to stretch the mill operating envelope coupled with other circuit additions to improve liberation of fine diamonds at minimum capital expenditure, the mill has, to date, performed to its billing.CITATION:van Niekerk, L M, Ndlovu, G N and Sikwa, N A, 2013. Suggestions have been made at various times that there may be a recurrence of lodes similar to those at Kalgoorlie in the country to the south of the Golden Mile, but, so far as is known, there has been no geological evidence to support these suggestions apart from the possible extension of the younger quartz-dolerite greenstone in this direction.Geological mapping carried out by the writer in the Coolgardie district in 1946, provided some additional geological evidence to support this claim, and the ideas then held have since been expanded and are now considered to be sufficiently advanced to present them as concrete suggestions. As will be seen from the following pages, the critical area for lode prospecting is Hannan's Lake, where the basement rocks may include younger quartz dolerite greenstone, which, although perhaps distributed over a smaller area than at Kalgoorlie, could, on structural grounds, have a similar fracture system and similar ore deposition.There is little need to stress the importance discoveries in this area would have in prolonging the life of the field, and stimulating the post-war gold mining revival.Previous Work: Only the publications having a direct bearing on the preparation of this paper are given in the list of selected references, but the writer is very conscious of the fact that much other geological work has been carried out in the Kalgoorlie district since its discovery, by the W.A. Department of Mines, by mining companies, and others, all of which has contributed to the present knowledge of the field, and acknowledgment of the value of this work is given herewith. In presenting the suggestions in this paper a broad structural control of ore deposition is assumed, but this has already been established in other parts of the goldfields of Western Australia, including adjacent areas. In the early nineteen thirties, the Western Mining Corporation commenced work on the basis that there was a close relationship between geological structure and auriferous ore deposition, and a similar approach was first made by the Geological Survey of Western Australia in the South Yilgarn in 1935. These ideas were further developed during later surveys, particularly in the North Yilgarn and the Mount Margaret Goldfield.During the Coolgardie Survey in 1946, broad structural mapping was done in greater detail than before, and the structural ideas were implemented and further developed, leading to some success.Other work to which particular acknowledgment is given is that of Stiltwell, Gustafson and Miller, Forman, Prider and Finucane, at Kalgoorlie, and that of Honman in the Kalgoorlie-Coolgardie district, references to which are given at the end of this paper.Valuable constructive criticism of this paper has been given by Professor E. de C.
