The green energy transition is expected to require a range of valuable minerals, which could be supplied through deep-sea polymetallic nodule mining. Deep-sea polymetallic nodules are mineral deposits with a composition well suited to produce lithium batteries, which are expected to be a necessary energy storage solution (Diouf and Pode, 2015; Paulikas et al, 2020) for the energy transition. By 2050 the annual demand for both cobalt and lithium is estimated to increase by around 450 per cent from 2018 levels (Hund et al, 2023), with the annual demand for nickel being greater than 2 million tons, and copper greater than 1 million tons. Polymetallic nodule mining is well positioned to provide these minerals in the near future. An intricate and comparatively unexplored ecosystem thrives within and surrounding the nodule fields (Smith et al, 2008). Deep-sea mining operations have the potential to disrupt and permanently damage this ecosystem through introduced pollution, artificial noise and light, and habitat destruction. Hence, there is a pressing need for new engineering and scientific endeavours to focus on developing new technologies to reduce any environmental impact from mining.

Froth flotation process requires the use of frothers. These important flotation agents are commonly characterised as either æselectiveÆ or æpowerfulÆ and are chosen following general guidelines and verification by laboratory and/or pilot plant tests. Fundamental properties of the flotation frothers have been extensively studied over the last few years. These studies have led to the development of standardised procedures to characterise frothers in terms of their ability to reduce bubble size and to increase foam stability. In this research project, the performance of five frothers in flotation of coal is evaluated and related to the fundamental properties of these agents. Since the recovery of water in the concentrate is closely related to the non-selective transport of solid particles by entrainment, the tested frothers are also assessed in terms of their ability to promote the transport of water towards the froth collection zone, both in absence and in presence of solids.

The Kanmantoo copper mine is located in the Adelaide Hills area of South Australia and is owned and operated by Hillgrove Resources (HGO). The mine is a drill and blast, truck and shovel operation mining sulfide (chalcopyrite) ore located in chloritised andalusite biotite schist. The initial Kanmantoo open pit operation occurred in the 1970s, before falling copper prices closed the mine. In 2010 the mine was reopened by HGO and the Kavanagh cutback of the Kanmantoo pit was undertaken. The Spitfire, Nugent and Emily Star satellite pits were also mined through to 2015 before the latest steep wall Giant pit design was developed to take mining out to 2019.There are no major fault structures and only two significant shear zone structures exposed in the open pit walls. The main Garnet Andalusite Biotite Schist (GABS) unit is quite competent so the pit designs have therefore mainly been controlled by four distinct joint sets. This paper is a case study on the influence of the joint regime on the wall stability of the main GABS unit and how a better understanding of the joint regime and the use of rock reinforcement has allowed the steep wall design to be adopted.The paper also describes the remote geotechnical mapping and slope monitoring techniques used to manage the rockfall risks associated with the steep walled slope design.CITATION:Hutchison, B J, Chambers, J, Gannon, S and Oko-oboh, D, 2017. An extensive trial of laser-based survey and monitoring systems at Hillgrove Resources Kanmantoo Copper Mine in the Adelaide Hills, South Australia, has proved the capabilities of the system in monitoring rock movements on open pit walls. Initially, the trial involved deploying a Maptek I-Site 8820 laser scanner and the proof-of-concept Maptek Sentry software in the Nugent Pit to monitor ductile rock movements located up to 260 m away. The system was proven to be capable of monitoring various rock movements from 1.5 tonne rockfalls up to a 40 m high toppling wall failure. Data collected from smaller rockfalls was used to help build a database for Hillgrove’s rockfall management program. As part of the trial, the laser scanner was deployed to monitor a ramp movement event, as well as the toppling failure, adjacent to an IBIS slope stability radar. Both devices monitored the slump and the slowly developing toppling movements, with similar results. Although the radar was used as the successful ‘critical alarm’ device for the toppling failure, post-failure analysis showed the laser-based system to be capable of performing a similar role in the ductile rock regime; albeit over much shorter distances than the radar capability. A second laser scanner was deployed to monitor Kanmantoo’s Emily Pit in early December 2014, where it successfully provided critical alarm warnings for a block topple event. Sentry software, which takes advantage of Maptek I-Site 3D spatial imaging technology, was first released in November 2014 to meet industry demand for a cost effective, flexible system to detect movement. Sentry has now been re-launched as a fully transportable monitoring system. Deployed in a custom trailer, the system offers a power and communications module, cellular and Wi-Fi networking and a stable bollard for the I-Site laser scanner and Sentry software. This paper will present rock wall movement data from the Sentry trial and a subsequent two years of monitoring of the open pit walls at the Kanmantoo Copper Mine, at distances out to 750m. In addition, examples of remote geological mapping and small rockfall detection, using the laser scans, will be described. The Sentry system has proven to be beneficial for the continual improvement of slope monitoring and risk management at hard rock mines. The Top End of the Northern Territory lies in the monsoonal zone and receives rain during the November-April period. Initially, at the start of the wet season, rain storms are localised, but, following the descent of the monsoonal trough from below the equator, widespread rain occurs. Overflow incidents at mine sites tend to arise midway through the annual wet season when excess water accumulated in ponds begins to discharge to the external environment. Remote-access monitoring may be undertaken at mine sites using equipment to continuously measure water quality parameters with storage of the information on a data logger. The data is then retrieved by visiting the site and transferring it to a portable computer or by remotely accessing the system using a telemetry system and transmission via telephone, VHF/UHF or satellite. Such systems are readily available and vary in cost depending on the sophistication of the data transfer system. Available sensors for continuous monitoring include those for conductivity, temperature, pH and other ion selective electrodes, eg nitrate, and water level. Of these variables, conductivity is most useful due to its inherent accuracy and stability of reading. Remote monitoring capability is able to provide: (i) more intensive monitoring of key issues; (ii) more timely information; (iii) correct perspective on the degree of environmental problem; and (iv) information from remote locations, which would be difficult to monitor by more conventional methods. Examples are given for applications of continuously logged measurement of conductivity of waters discharging to drains and in creeks at Pine Creek, Ranger, Nabarlek and Woodcutters mines in the Northern Territory. These applications demonstrate the timeliness of the continuous monitoring technique.

This study uses the Q Method to examine how those living in former metal mining landscapes value this heritage and their preferences for the long-term management of mine waste. Such sites are often perceived as derelict or degraded, and of very little value. It is therefore assumed that their reuse, for example for development or recovery of metals, is likely to be beneficial. There are around 5,000 former metal mines in England and Wales, many of which are protected for their ecological, geological or cultural value. The Q Method is particularly suitable for issues where there is no consensus of opinion. We asked 38 residents of six mining areas in England and Wales to ‘sort’ a series of statements based on their resonance with the resident’s perspective; this is the Q sort. The statements covered a range of opinions of the mining legacy, its value and options for its management with a particular focus on the potential for metal recovery from the wastes. Analysis of the Q sorts revealed five perspectives on the mining heritage. All placed a high value on the cultural and ecological value of this heritage, however, they differed in their priorities for long-term management. For example, emphasis was placed on either nature conservation, cultural heritage, water quality or the opportunity for job creation through reworking the mines. Cutting across these themes there were also differing perspectives on the role of experts and local people in shaping the future management of the wastes. This research suggests that the views of local people are nuanced; they value their mining heritage but opinion is split on the most effective way to manage these sites especially where there is an impact on water quality.CITATION:Sinnett, D E and Sardo, A M, 2018. The development and optimisation of mill discharge trommels, and specifically their screen panels, can be a neglected area in the complex operation of a minerals processing plant. Trommels are often seen as a ‘set and forget’ component of the circuit, even when significant improvements in design are possible. A redesigned trommel and panel arrangement has simplified and added flexibility to the plant shutdown schedule at Kirkland Lake Gold’s Fosterville Gold Mine in Central Victoria.Prior to the trommel redesign, the shutdown frequency was determined by the expected life of trommel panels at 14 weeks. Planning downtime around this item led to higher maintenance costs and wastage in other areas of the plant. This was particularly disruptive with respect to mill lining change-outs, which were forced out of sequence and often changed prematurely. Fosterville Gold engaged Metso Australia Limited to propose a new trommel design that would better suit the site. The new trommel was engineered to balance simplicity with performance, and incorporated the latest in Modular trommel design, modelling and Finite Elemental Analysis (FEA). Modular Panels and Spiral Segments achieve significantly longer life, and allow in-situ panel change outs, flexibility in spiral and dam positioning and an improvement in classification performance. Trommel panel life has significantly increased from 14 to 71 weeks in the trommel’s highest wearing zone. The new design has eliminated some risks to safety by reducing manual labour and lifting requirements during shutdowns. There is greater flexibility with respect to shutdown requirements. The site is no longer at the mercy of trommel panel lifespan, which allows for better optimisation of wear components in the circuit. CITATION:Pyke, J D, Katov, K and Ciutina, S T, 2018. At Cominco's Zinc Refinery at Trail, British Columbia impurities are removed from zinc sulphate electrolyte by a two-stage purification process using zinc dust. Copper, cadmium and thallium are removed in the first stage whereas cobalt is removed in the second stage. Cobalt removal kinetics are affected by soluble antimony and copper additions to the electrolyte. This study was focused on the kinetics of cobalt removal by zinc powder cementation. Experimental variables included copper and antimony concentrations, pH and temperature. Common organic additives employed in zinc plants were studied to determine potential interactions with the cobalt removal process. Cementation products obtained from laboratory experiments and plant practice were studied using SEM. A number of significant results were obtained: 1. Copper and antimony ions were sustantially removed from solution during the early stages of the cementation reaction (within the first 15 minutes). Cobalt cementation kinetics are slow and follow a first order kinetic regime. 2. A drop in the cobalt removal rates can be correlated with a rise in the Eh of the slurry. 3. Ligninsulphonate, Percol 351 and animal glue at levels of 2 mg/L significantly impede cobalt cementation.

In August 1996 a Microseismic Monitoring System developed by ISS International Limited was installed at the Pasminco Broken Hill Mine -Southern Cross area. The project aims were to:Assist in daily safety management in a mine environment which exhibits one of the highest occurrences of microseismic activity recorded in the Australian mining industry. Be used as a proactive tool in design of future development and stoping. The project to-date has been an unqualified success in achieving both goals. Consequently the system is being expanded from 6 to 14 monitoring sites.

To finalise the arrangement and details of the headframe to be erected over the new No. 3 Shaft, the haulage and winding equipment requirements were first determined, then tentative designs were prepared to cover the needs of general shaft servicing work for men and materials, mullock and ore handling, and the probable requirements of a breaker station to be built adjacent to the headframe, which would provide for the crushing of the run-of-mine ore down to a size which would be suitable for feeding on to the concentrating mill.

Arc-type volcanic activity has been a major feature of the late Cenozoic geological evolution of the Pacific-Australian plate boundary in the northern New Zealand region. The timelspace distribution patterns of arc-type rocks reflect changes in the nature of the plate boundary as it has evolved. Inception of volcanism began in the north during earliest Miocene times (26 Ma) following ophiolite emplacement and during the next 10 Ma developed into a volcanic arc segment extending south to the present position of the central North Island. The northern part of the arc became extinct about 15 Ma ago, but activity continued in the central (Coromandel) part of the arc until about 5 Ma ago. In late Pliocene and Quaternary times volcanic activity has become concentrated in a northeast trending zone which is collinear with the Tonga-Kermadec Arc.

The operation of copper flotation circuit is a challenging task for the site metallurgists and plant operators. To optimise the performance requires meeting both grade and recovery objectives. These plants have numerous pieces of equipment that are monitored by hundreds of sensors. The challenge is to review these sensors and adjust the numerous control inputs to maintain peak operational efficiency for extended periods. There is also a need to respond to equipment failure. These challenges lead to in operational inefficiencies and can result in a reduction in revenue.This paper details an overview of an operational assistance tool implemented at Newcrest's Telfer plant’s copper flotation circuit. This tool is based on a digital twin of the plant. A digital twin is a model of the plant that is simulated in parallel to the normal plant operation. It is fed with the plant data in real time to provide a prediction of plant operation. The model outputs directly generate the metrics that are used to assess the plant performance, and these are compared with the metrics calculated from the actual plant’s operation. Deviations between the model estimate and the plant’s actual performance are used to gather insight into plant health and alert the operator to poor performance. The operators gather more information regarding the root cause by reviewing the model’s inputs that have deviated outside their normal operating range. An evaluation of the plant performance, following the commissioning of the digital twin, showed an overall reduction of acid soluble copper in the tails.This paper discusses the implementation of a digital twin of the plant to monitor plant performance during live operation. It will include details on data collection and cleansing, data reduction techniques, model development, and real-time implementation. The results of the case study of an implementation of a digital twin at Newcrest's Telfer copper flotation plant will be used throughout the paper.CITATION:Oliver, S J and Tooher, R, 2018. Following acquisition of the Woodlark Island tenement by Highlands Gold Limited, an exploration programme using extensive diamond drilling has confirmed that the style of gold mineralisation is similar to other SW Pacific Rim carbonate base metal gold systems. The two centres of gold mineralisation at Kulumadau and Boniavat-Busai are inferred to be related. to buried porphyry centres localised on NE trending major horst bounding structures. Individual prospects are localised on NW trending cross structures peripheral to the porphyry centres.Gold mineralisation has been derived from the mixing of hot saline magmatic fluids with cool dilute meteoric waters. While the bulk of mineralisation occurs in dilational tensional gash fractures, bonanza grades resulted from fluid quenching in feeder structures. Pre-mineralisation breccias created plumbing systems for hydrothermal fluids and similar paragenetic sequences are defined for Busai and the Kulumadau areas. These include early, distal porphyry, low sulphidation mineralisation, followed by base metal gold and carbonate deposition.

The mining industry is facing some key challenges that provide a compelling case for geometallurgy initiatives. Over the last 30 years, the average grade of Australian orebodies being mined has halved while the waste removed to access the minerals has more than doubled. In the last eight years, the industry’s energy consumption has increased 70 per cent while multi-factored productivity has fallen 24 per cent. The paper documents a broad range of industry case studies which demonstrate strategies for gaining value from geometallurgy.The mining industry constantly faces the key questions of how significant ore variability is on mine valuation and how would knowledge of the variability change the mining schedule, mine to mill design and operation. Using case studies the paper describes the methods used for incorporating mineral extraction attributes into orebody models and their technical integration into daily operation as well as mine planning optimisation. While pit optimisation from a fully attributed geometallurgical model highlights areas of opportunity and risk it is shown that during the scheduling phase of mine planning that significant value can be added. The benefits from these projects included reducing geotechnical and environmental risk, improving mine to mill performance, option analysis and quantified cash flow risk. There is growing acceptance within the minerals industry that ‘realistically assumed modifying factors’ defined by a competent person/s are not sufficient to mitigate the risk of funding mining ventures. Geometallurgy is moving away from factored ore reserves to data-rich block models providing reliable information for mining, metallurgical and environmental considerations.

Laboratory-scale studies aimed at developing a process for solubilising manganese values from a low grade pyrolusite containing material using low grade pyrite, both available in India, are described. Leaching 21 parts by mole of pyrolusite with 6 and 26 parts by mole of pyrite and sulphuric acid respectively results in good manganese dissolution (98 per cent) at 100°C within one hour. The probable kinetics of the leaching process has also been given.

The coal resources of the Singleton- Muswellbrook area of New South Wales are of major importance to Australia, and are likely to play a significant role in meeting the expanding demands for energy in many countries of the world. Coal resources of 45 thousand million tonnes of which 15 thousand million tonnes lie at a depth of less than 200m have been estimated. The history of coal mining in the area commenced in the mid 1800's and has been one of fluctuations in production but of rapid expansion in more recent years. It is destined to become the largest coal producing area in New South Wales. Coal is being won from the area by strip mining, open pit mining and by underground means. The techniques involved are described. The area is well endowed with infra- structure such as modern towns, railways, road- ways and access to port facilities. Production of both coking coal and steaming coal is expected to rise significantly within the next 25 years. A large proportion of the State's anticipated increased production to between 117 and 177 million tonnes by the year 2000 is likely to come from this area.
