During the 1980s and early 1990s, the South African coal industry experienced a series of methane explosions in which well over 200 coal miners lost their lives. In addition, a fire and an explosion in the gold mining sector claimed a further 240 lives. These tragic incidents resulted in the establishment of a research facility at Kloppersbos dedicated to explosion and fires research and the funding of an extensive research program, and almost certainly influenced the government of the day in its decision to establish, in 1993, the Leon Commission of Enquiry into Mine Health and Safety. The results of this focused research program, the wide-ranging recommendations of the Leon Commission and the determination of the coal mining industry to improve its safety record all combined to result in the past 20 years without a major explosion.This paper lists some of the research outcomes and, through three case studies, illustrates what can be learnt from investigations following explosions. The paper concludes with an evaluation of some of the findings of the Royal Commission on the Pike River coal tragedy. Many of the Commission’s conclusions are pertinent and relevant to the coal mining industry worldwide and their implementation could significantly improve coalmine safety; however, a careful study of the available facts indicates there could well be an alternative explanation of the source of the methane, the location of the ignition and the size of the explosion at the Pike River coalmine.CITATION:Phillips, H R, 2015. Transporting coal by means of conveyor belts is very common in Australian underground coal mines. Major conveyor belt-related mining incidents are now relatively infrequent as a result of recent improvements in engineering standards and use of fire-resistance materials. However, conveyor belts have the potential for incidents capable of causing either personal or structural damage. In addition, any unexpected break down of rolling components or failure of belts creates a significant interruption to the production that is a major concern for operators whose responsibility is to achieve the optimum mining production.Currently, underground coal conveyor belts are examined for the presence of any overheating, smouldering or unsafe conditions likely to cause a fire. Periodic inspection of operating conveyor belts is carried out with the aim of detecting any local heat sources in an early stage. This includes temperature measurements of the driving head, idlers and rollers using hand-held temperature sensors such as infrared cameras or laser temperature sensors. The disadvantages of current conveyor belt temperature monitoring systems include high labour and equipment costs, safety risk to personnel who are in close proximity to moving conveyors, the ability to take line of site measurements only and potential for missed overheated idlers. Some of the conveyor idlers in underground coal operations cannot be accessed for traditional temperature measurements. This introduces a significant risk to the operation of critical infrastructure.A distributed temperature sensing (DTS) system can be used to develop an advanced conveyor belt temperature monitoring system that provides real-time, accurate and continuous temperature measurements along a conveyor belt particularly at the rolling components. The DTS system comprises of fibre optic detection cable, DTS controller and interfacing module. The advantages of the system include the accuracy, low-cost, easy installation, robustness, safety, immunity to radio frequency and electromagnetic interference, real-time data collection, and secure data transmission. This paper presents a scoping study on the development and utilisation of a fibre optic-based DTS system for underground coal conveyor belts. The mechanism of heat generation, the operation temperature range and the installation issues of fibre optic cable along the conveyor belt particularly in close proximity to each end of the spindle on every idler will be discussed.CITATION:Aminossadati, S M and Yang, B, 2013. Geological, textural and mineralogical classification of iron ores is routinely conducted by mine and exploration geologists on reverse circulation percussion, blasthole cone and bulk samples for grade control, defining ore and waste, determining lump:fines ratio and predicting downstream processing characteristics. Classification is based on physical hardness, colour, streak and other visual characteristics. However, logging is generally restricted to the five to 20 per cent of chips above about 2 mm. This means that most of the sample is too fine to be reliably logged for anything but colour or streak and the textural types must be inferred from other information. A recently developed software package called æRecognitionÆ allows automated identification and classification of iron ore textural types and gangue on a particle basis in polished section down to 0.01 mm using processed digital images. It is not designed to be used as a routine logging tool, but is applicable where higher definition is required at the resource evaluation stage on selected percussion, drill core or bulk samples. æRecognitionÆ processes data obtained after optical image analysis of fine iron ore samples. It contains several parts, like æRecognitionÆ, æCompositionÆ, æLiberation by Total IronÆ, æLiberation by PhasesÆ and æStatisticsÆ, which allow vast and diverse information to be obtained about the iron ore samples being studied. Identification and classification of the textural type of each particle is performed according to the CSIRO-Hamersley Iron Ore Group Classification Scheme. The recognition procedure encompasses a good knowledge of different ore types and a logical knowledge tree, managing fuzzy boundary problems and the potential for a few different ore types in the same particle to be considered. This new technology introduces strict criteria to make the process of identifying particles more objective. Automated recognition standardises the identification procedure and significantly saves time. It enables users without a strong background in mineralogy to perform accurate texture identification. The æRecognitionÆ package has a modern user-friendly interface and Word compatible output. The combination of all the features mentioned makes the package a convenient tool for detailed studies of fine iron ores.

This paper discusses why Argyle Diamonds adopted thickened tailings disposal in 1985 and how the system was developed over the next seven years. A wide ranging review of the thickened tailings disposal system and the tailings deposit it was producing was carried out during 1992 and 1993. The results of that review led to the abandonment of thickened tailings disposal at Argyle because of serious concerns about the stability of the resultant tailings deposit. The exposure to the risk of liquefaction and an assessment of the consequences if this happened to the thickened tailings deposit are shown. The criteria for selecting the new tailings disposal strategy are then described. The final section of the paper discusses the management strategies that have been put in place. These are designed to: ò reduce the risk posed by the thickened tailings deposit to an acceptable level; ò safely store tailings to the end of mine life; ò produce a land form that can be decommissioned to the satisfaction of Government regulatory bodies.

"Methane is a signifi cant greenhouse gas. Methane is released from coal seams during the mining process, both in surface and underground operations. This uncontrolled release is termed æfugitive emissionsÆ and in underground mines is transferred to the atmosphere in ventilation air, known as ventilation air methane (VAM). The global VAM emissions are over 369 Mt of CO2-e/a (Butler, 2011; US EPA, 2010). Coal mines may abate this VAM or consider abatement should there be a price on carbon. These fugitive emissions are heading towards ten per cent of AustraliaÆs emissions by 2020 (Department of Climate Change, 2011).There are safety issues involved in VAM destruction. Due to the nature of coal, and coalextraction, unpredicted methane spikes above the lower-explosive-limit (LEL) can occur in theventilation air; for example outburst events or ventilation failure. This could lead to a mine fi re ifthe mine ventilation air was connected to a VAM abatement plant and the risks are left unmitigated.CorkyÆs is working with the mining industry to directly address these safety issues. CorkyÆs calltheir technology VAM RAB, which stands for ventilation air methane regenerative afterburner(VAM RAB). VAM RAB utilises the principles of a thermal oxidiser.This paper discusses fi ve independent layers of protection (ILPs) to fi rst stop methane reachingthe thermal oxidiser and secondly prevent the fl ame front from burning away from the VAMRAB. The test work completed or contemplated includes safety integrity level (SIL) assignmentto various vents, barriers and door systems to prevent a fl ammable mixture reaching the VAMRAB, proven rapid response methane monitoring sourced from the petrochemical industry, anddefl agration experiments to test the eff ectiveness of the passive geometry and active engineeringcontrols. These experiments and SIL assessments indicate that it is possible to safely connect theVAM RAB to a working coal mine.Further work is required to upscale the pilot safety work. Refi nement to the design is possible;for example improvement to safety duct controls once trialled at demonstration scale plus thermalenergy capture for power generation or other applications to provide heat. Nevertheless, thispaper shows how safety issues can be managed by a multilayer of protection approach usingvents, barriers and doors, and appropriate thermal oxidiser geometry."

A tunnel operations analyser is a new high technol- ogy instrument for use in underground work. By remotely sensing the acoustic emissions from operating machines and processes in a tunnel or shaft and by applying sophis- ticated computer processing to them individual process cycles and other detailed information about the operating processes can be collected. Detailed analyses and dissec- tions of the work in progress can be made and a variety of action oriented management reports produced. The pro- cess is fully automatic. Results of applying this device to two full scale tunnel projects are presented. The hardware and software that comprise the instrument are discussed in detail. Processes by which this device can be used to sub- stantially reduce tunnel costs are presented. It is concluded that this type of technology has great potential.

Attritioning has been a method of improving mineral extraction for over 60 years, however it is only recently that an understanding of the mechanism employed and the improvement in efficiency that have been achieved.The paper will discuss these improvements and how to overcome the problems that have been raised. At present there is a dearth of information on the correct design and operation of these machines.The paper will address these issues as well as fluid on the Zeta potential, micro shear, retention residence time and pilot plant operation.A study on the hydrodynamics of attritioner operation has been identified and will be discussed.Surface chemistry, clean lines of attrition material and the treatment of fines significant advances in the understanding of attritioning highlighted.CITATION:Baguley, W, 2013. The grouping and segregation error is one of Gy’s seven errors that cannot be measured in any qualitative manner because of its transient and changing characteristics each time the sample is handled mechanically. Attempts to calculate the mean and variance of the segregation error is considered by some as ‘an exercise in futility’ that would not help us achieve representative sampling. This research is aimed at understanding the process of segregation of dense, finely divided and dilute particulate materials supported in a clean quartz substrate during intense agitation. Several mixtures of fine-grained materials including steel, tungsten carbide and gold grains were used in these experiments. Four hundred grains of each of the minerals and metals at a top size of 2 mm were mixed with approximately 600 g of finely ground quartz material (95 per cent passing 2000 microns) in a 500 ml plastic jar with a sealable lid. The mineral–?metal mixtures were analysed in three steps using microfocus X-ray computed tomography. Step one consisted of rolling the containers on a flat surface in an attempt to concentrate the mineral and metal grains in the core of the supporting substrate; this is a base case that can be reconstructed after each session of analysis. The second step involved gentle and vigorous shaking of the mixtures in order to segregate the denser minerals and metals from the supporting quartz substrate. In some cases, a third step involved splitting the sample through a riffle splitter. Three-?dimensional images of the surface of each grain, its volume and its X-, Y- and Z-coordinates, before and after intense agitation of the container, were interpreted from the reconstruction of the tomographic X-ray data. The spatial analysis of grains using cell declustering and 3D variography provided a useful means of characterising the distribution of the grains in space and the extent to which they had become segregated during the process of agitation. Spatial analysis indicates that in general, grouping and continuity of grains is weakly developed. The modelled nugget effect remains high for most tests, indicating that grains of similar size did not group together strongly. Agitation through rolling provided the best continuity, although not consistently in the long axis of the plastic jar. The nugget effect was consistently highest, and the range of continuity shortest in samples that had been split, indicating that the grouping and continuity were reduced through splitting the sample. Initial results indicate that very little segregation of the minerals and metals occurs in the quartz substrate. This is somewhat counter-intuitive, but suggests that the effects of agitation on mixtures of dense minerals and metals in substrates of lower density do not lead to excessive segregation. Differences in behaviour between dense materials in response to agitation are evident. Grains of different composition and shape did not group and segregate in a predictable manner in response to the agitation methods. In the last 50 years there have been tremendous improvements in equipment used in development on underground mines. Compressed air powered jacklegs have been replaced by high powered electro-hydraulic drifters on sophisticated drill jumbos and load haul dump units have taken over from small shovels and rail cars.Despite the increase in power applied in key parts of the development cycle, average advance rates have fallen and costs have increased. The factor that is most often regarded as the main contributor to slowing advance rates is increased support requirements. Whilst there is no denying that the drive to improve safety has resulted in the requirement for more bolting and the installation of a skin support (mesh or shotcrete), this is not the only factor.Within the industry as a whole, many of the basic principles of development appear to have been lost over time. This paper looks at a historical case study and discusses some of the features of old development cycles that are no longer in use. This highlights some of the basics that appear to have been forgotten. These may be indicators to what may provide improvements in the conventional drill and blast development cycle.CITATION:Ross, I T, 2014. QNI Pty Ltd operates the Yabulu Refinery located 25 kilometres north of Townsville, North Queensland. The plant treats nickel laterite ores sourced from the Philippines, Indonesia and New Caledonia. The cobalt head grade and overall recovery expectations for the 2001/2002 financial year are 0.161 per cent and 53.8 per cent respectively. Cobalt is a valuable byproduct derived from the nickel refining operation which utilises the Caron Process. Any increases in cobalt recovery that are achieved from the existing relatively low level provide significant improvements to the bottom line of the operation. Towards the end of 2000, a project was undertaken to characterise cobalt losses with the sole purpose of improving cobalt recoveries using a variety of analysis techniques. The Time-of- Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (TOF-SIMS û University of South Australia) method was used to verify the presence of surface bearing cobalt species, originating from either co-precipitation or adsorption mechanisms. Cross-section examinations were also performed using Scanning Electron Micrscopy (SEM) and Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectrometry (EDXS). These techniques indicated the presence of high cobalt concentrations (in the order of several per cent) within a select number of roasted and leached ore particles. The phenomenon of cobalt losses due to incomplete leaching within specific ore particles was not widely documented within the Refinery prior to these studies. In order to quantify losses via this mechanism, Mineral Liberation Analysis (MLA û JKTech Centre) was also performed on key samples. This paper serves to document a systematic approach in determining the source of significant valuable mineral losses in an established, operating plant. It discusses the use of a variety of analytical techniques, which have been adapted for the minerals processing industry, but are strongly relevant for plant investigations in the hydrometallurgical industry.

This paper presents measurement and analysis of the dynamic response of a five-storey building to very high frequency excitation (>100 Hz) from blasting vibrations originating from a contiguous excavation of rock. Velocity response measurements in the rock and on the structure were employed to calculate the time-correlated dynamic displacement response of the building to blasting. Time-correlated structure response measurements are needed to advance the understanding of the response of urban structures to high-frequency excitation. Current regulations and understanding are based upon measurements of the response of one- to two-storey residential structures by 10 to 40 Hz excitation. The extension of these observations to taller structures when excited by high-frequency excitation needs to be investigated further.Measurements show that the amplification patterns at the ground level and top of the structure match or are lower than that observed by the US Bureau of Mines (Siskind et al, 1980) for the shorter residential structures. They decrease with increasing peak particle velocity. From the measurements, the global transverse shear strains found by differentiating ground floor and top displacements were calculated to be 12 µstrains. Time-correlated bottom and top of structure displacements show that building response may be more reflective of wave propagation up the structure than whole-structure inter-storey drift.In addition, a 3D model was used to compare computed displacements and strains to measured results. Modelled responses varied considerably, both in magnitude and location of the maximum strain. No conclusion can be made regarding the best 3D model to employ to simulate building response. More data such as motions measured at many points in the structure are needed. Maximum inter-storey transverse shear strains calculated with the model were found through the acceleration excitation and were less than 12 µstrains for 37 mm/s rock motion excitation. The Fimiston Open Pit (commonly referred to as the æSuper PitÆ) is a part of the Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines Pty Ltd (KCGM) operation in Kalgoorlie-Boulder. KCGM manages the Fimiston Open Pit, the Mt Charlotte underground mine, the Fimiston Mill and the Gidji Roaster for its Joint Venture Owners, Newmont and Barrick Australia. KCGM produces up to 850 000 ounces of gold per year. The KCGM operations are located on the historical Golden Mile on the outskirts of the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder, about 600 kilometres east of Perth Western Australia. This traditionally underground mining centre has been worked since 1893, yielding in excess of 50 Moz of gold from ore with an average head grade of 10 g/t. This represents approximately ten per cent of the gold produced in Australia and one per cent of the gold produced in the world. The Fimiston Open Pit is essentially an aggregation of what were known as the Judd, South, Paringa, Croesus/Eclipse, Central, Brownhill, Drysdale, Morrison, North and Horseshoe pits into one continuous large-scale operation. The old Fimiston Underground Operations (included the Main, Croesus, Chaffers, Lake View, and Perseverance shafts) were also located within the area of the Fimiston Open Pit. The underground operations closed in 1992 due to high mining costs.

"The mining industry suffers from a shortage of professional and other workers. Research and analysis has demonstrated a close correlation between high performance in productivity, maintenance and safety. There is also a significant correlation between engagement and performance. It is the hypothesis of the authors that mines can use a strategy of establishing themselves as a high-performance mine to attract and retain high caliber professional people: step 1 is to become best practice in equipment performance (productivity, maintenance and safety) step 2 is to brand the mine as æbest practiceÆ by sharing what has been confidential performance and outcome information with the general industry.Previous research has shown that many professional people are attracted by the prospect of a high achieving site because of the learnings and the support for continually doing better. In addition, a link has been established in previous research between productivity and safety. Operators and drivers are attracted to sites which have fewer dangerous people operating or driving. Good management delivers exceptional performance and a work site which high caliber managers and operational personnel people want to work at. The strategy requires commitment and proper execution but it can work. The strategy needs a specific approach and this paper will discuss this. A case study is provided from a mine which over a nine month period increased dragline performance by 15 per cent and reduced stress on the boom by 30 per cent. This mine paid the employees (professional and operational) $25 000/a less than the major mines but the operators and professional people would not leave; in fact, people were happy to be paid less to work there.CITATION:Lumley, G and Trott, T, 2012. This talk was delivered in Kalgoorlie in April this year, to the Kalgoorlie Branch of The Institution of Engineers, Australia. We believe it is of such interest to members of our Institute and readers of this publication we believe it important to extend the audience who have the opportunity to read it. An edited version follows:"Why should we be so concerned about Mining Related Education; after all is said and done, the mining industry is not a great employer of persons?"The mining industry is capital rather than labour intensive. It employs only 2.7 per cent of the national workforce. However; the minerals industry is Australia's major exporter accounting for over 40 per cent of the nation's total export of goods.In Western Australia the value of minerals production in 1985 was about $5,000 million and consequently mineral exports accounted for about 53 per cent of the total value of overseas exports from the State. The diversity of the mining industry is also worthy of mention and produces iron ore, alumina, gold, nickel and mineral sands. That apart, our potential to become a major producer of diamonds, rare earths and petroleum products is considerable, not to mention base metals (copper, lead and zinc) and uranium.Our mining industry is of national importance and contributes in excess of 30 per cent of the total value of Australian overseas trade. Although the mining ind ustry does not employ many people, the people it employs contribute very much more, per capita, to the wealth of the nation than do employees in any other sector of our economy.No-one would deny that during the 20th century Australians have depended on the export earnings from the sale of relatively unprocessed agricultural products and more recently the sale of relatively unprocessed minerals for their standard of living.Not surprisingly, therefore, our economy is highly vulnerable to unstable world commodity market prices.The slump in trade we are currently experiencing (in first quarter 1987-Edition) was brought about by the over supply of the raw materials we produce. However, the recent downturn in world market prices is more serious than previous slumps because in part it is due to technological advances 'in other countries which could have a permanent effect on the world trade of primary products.

Burra was the largest metalliferous mine in Aus- tralia between 1845 and 1860 and employed as many as 1000 men and boys. The workforce was predominantly Cornish, Burra being the first con- centration of Cornish folk in Australia. The sur- face and underground mining operations were typically Cornish and virtually all positions of responsibility were held by Cornishmen. Beam pumping and winding engines were imported from Cornwall and housed in traditional Cornish engi- nehouses. Burra had the first significant number of beam engines in Australia: six were installed between 1849 and 1861. These engines, ranging in size from 20 inches to 80 inches in diameter, were used for pumping, hauling, and driving Cornish roll crush- ers and dressing machinery. Derelict enginehouses of the great beam engines are a striking reminder of former mining activity in Cornwall and South Australia. In South Aus- tralia about 35 enginehouses were erected between 1848 and 1887, of which eight still remain, three of them at Burra (Figure 1). These remain as a tangible link with the Industrial Revolution.

Over a century ago the first ship designed solely for carrying a bulk cargo was launched. This vessel, the "John Bowes", with a deadweight of 660 tonnes was a single decked ship with machinery and accommodation aft. As such she was undoubtedly the fore- runner of the bulk carrier of today only some two hundred and fifty times smaller. Whilst the "John Bowes" pioneered the present accepted mode of transporting the bulk com- modities of the world, it is unlikely that her cargo was either loaded or discharged as quickly as that of a 150, 000 tonner of today. Two decades ago the bulk carrier was beginning to feature in the bulk handling ports of the world. Cargoes of iron ore previously carried in the 'tween deck vessels of the Empire type and Second World War Liberty ships began to be poured into the unrestricted open holds of bulk or ore carriers. The size of vessels catering for this relatively new innovation has rapidly grown to pass the 150, 000 deadweight tonne mark, but only in the last few years. The growth from now into the future is not simply one of ship size evolution. Neither is it a function of the depth of water available at ports. It is in fact a function of a number of features such as ports, loading and unloading facilities, ship trading characteristics, length of voyage and total economies of the transport task from supplier to destination.

The preamble to the mining Act sets out that such Act is to provide for the encouragement and regulation of mining within the State of Queensland. This paper will attempt to follow the legislative path of such aim and in particular to show what part Mining Wardens play in the administration of the Mining Act.The Mining Act empowers the Governor in Council to constitute Mining Districts and Mining Fields and to appoint any duly qualified officer of the Public Service of Queensland to be a Warden or a Mining Registrar. As a matter of practice Stipendiary Magistrates who hold office in the major centre within a Mining District are appointed Wardens and Clerks of the Court are appointed Mining Registrars. In some districts where there is no Stipendiary Magistrate the Clerk of the Court is appointed an Acting Warden with all the powers of a Warden. Every Warden so appointed is a Warden for the whole State.To achieve impartiality Section 74 of the Mining Act provides that a Warden shall not hold or be entitled (directly or indirectly) to the benefits of any share or interest in a mining tenement or mining venture and provides a penalty of $1000 or imprisonment for six months or both, for contravention of such section.

Crushing Plant Process Optimisation Design of processes in order to find the most efficient solution to a specific task is a difficult problem. Often the number of solutions are large and the optimal solution is therefore difficult to identify. Crushing plant process design is no exception from this statement. In order to find the best solution issues like equipment selection and process configuration must be mastered. The solution must both be technically feasible and preferably have a low operating cost. Since crushing plant design is a complex task with a large solution space it is basically impossible to master without a specialised tool. For a long time simulation softwares have been used to assist in the design process. These tools only give answers for how a user defined plant will operate. There are no tools with capabilities to consider different design options in order to determine what the most efficient solution looks like. In this paper a method for crushing plant design optimisation is presented. The novel method utilises a combined optimisation routine and expert system in order to find the most cost efficient solution to a given process task. The user will only need to define the feed material properties, the process capacity, and the end product requirements. The developed system will find the solution lowest production cost per ton.
