ONE of the problems encountered in working with metals at elevated temperatures is the instability resulting from solid-solid diffusion at a -common interface. A determination of the nature and magnitude of this phenomenon is important as related to structural properties of materials potentially useful in high temperature applications. This paper is concerned with the solid state reaction between metallic molybdenum and beryllium at elevated temperatures. In the older literature,' there were no known inter-metallic compounds in the system Be-Mo, and the list of beryllium intermetallics was rather small. New compilations have been made by Smithells' and by Taylor," listing all the then known beryllium binary intermetallic compounds. In addition to these, some new phases have just been reported' in the system Zr-Be and some further compounds of the type MBe,3 have been currently described. The new compound MoBe,, which is reported upon in this paper differs considerably from the above mentioned MBe13 group, and will be discussed in detail. Diffusion Study The nature of the solid diffusion at a Mo-Be interface was determined by sealing a beryllium rod inside a molybdenum capsule and heating at a temperature of 2000°F' (1100°C) for 100 hr. The molybdenum capsule was fabricated from % in. swaged molybdenum rod obtained from the Fansteel Metallurgical Corp. The beryllium metal was obtained from Brush Beryllium Corp. as % in. cold-drawn rod. This material assayed 99.05 pct Be and contained as impurities 0.84 pct Be0 and 0.19 pct Be2C. The molybdenum capsule was % in. in OD x 2 in. long. To prepare it, a concentric hole 0.250 in. + 0.001 in. — 0.000 in. in diam was drilled and reamed in one end of a rod to a depth of 1 '/2 in. A 1 in. long beryllium rod 0.250 in. + 0.000 in. — 0.001 in. in diam was pressed into the molybdenum capsule. A molybdenum plug 0.250 in. & 0.001 in. in diam x 9/16 in. long was then used to seal the beryllium in place. The capsules were placed in a molybdenum resistance furnace and heated at 2000°F (1100°C) for 100 hr. On cooling, the specimens were cut and examined metallographically. Fig. 1 is a micrograph at X250 of a portion of the interface from a transverse section. Four phases are clearly visible, with sharp boundaries between them. Phase A is a section of the molybdenum capsule; phase B is the molybdenum-rich intermetallic composition MoBe,; phase C is the beryllium-rich compound MoBe13; phase D is a section of the beryllium rod. All phases were readily polished to a high metallic luster. The molybdenum-rich phase has a pronounced purple tinge. The beryllium-rich phase (C) is only slightly darker than the pure beryllium. In polarized reflected light, however, it shows striking birefringence between crossed Nicols. The black areas represent flaws or pores in the material. A small representative amount of powdered material from each of the phases was carefully removed under the microscope with a diamond tool. With this material, powder X-ray diffraction patterns were made for the identification of each phase. Table I lists the X-ray diffraction spacings and corresponding indexes characteristic of these intermetallic compounds. Synthesis To establish the formula of the new intermetallic compound, X-ray diffraction patterns were made from powders obtained from solidified melts of known composition. This paper presents a composite of ideas on materials handling systems by describing the design of an over-all system for a hypothetical steel pellet plant located on the Great Lakes. The bulk materials handling industry has served for years as the skeleton and the central system of nerves and nourishment for the body of basic industries. During the past two decades, this body has undergone substantial growth and mutation to meet the surging demands of our national economy for more and better products. The steel industry has kept pace with spiralling demand by innovation which has resulted in new processes and improved designs which generally yield greater production from fewer units. Materials handling technology has likewise improved its techniques and currently has a new, stronger generation of equipment to perform its necessary supporting function. Drawing upon excerpts from several recent plant designs, this paper describes a basic approach to the selection and application of modern bulk materials handling systems to an entirely new steel plant. Specific details are not available for publication, and therefore the plant described herein is a composite of ideas. This imaginary plant will be located on the United States side of the Great Lakes and its owner will be called the Hypothetical Steel Corp. for purposes of discussion. TYPES OF EQUIPMENT The basic bulk materials handling systems and components required in a plant so situated are: lake boat unloaders; railroad train unloading systems; storage pile stackers and reclaimers; large bins and regulating feeders; and the conveyor systems — with their attendant controls— which connect the foregoing. PROGRAM OF DEVELOPMENT The initial work on the plant must be that of the process engineers who develop and refine the basic data, i.e., the logistics of all raw materials, waste materials and products within the plant. During this phase of study, the materials handling engineer may advance his planning only in basic areas such as movements at the dock and movements at the railroad. This initial planning work is concerned only with defining logical plant locations in the light of channels, currents, existing traffic, governmental regulations, locations of existing railroads and available rights-of-way. These systems alone have their own individual criteria which must be respected and accommodated in the final layout. All other elements, such as the arrangement of the blast furnaces, power house, coke plant, by-product plant, scrap preparation plant, BOF shop, and facilities for continuous casting, degassing, calcining, etc., are dictated by their own specific needs and their relation to each other. In the arrangement of these latter facilities, the materials handling system is secondary and must be designed to accommodate. BASIC LOGISTICS The result of the process engineer's work can be expressed in terms similar to those shown in Table I. Plants are customarily rated in terms of annual tons of ingots. Therefore, the basic size of this plant can be determined by referring to the BOF Shop wherein it is sized at 5 million tpy. From the base, the required hot metal can be traced to the blast furnace, which in turn indicates the amount of required flux, iron bearing materials and coke —which in turn establishes the demand for coal. Likewise, the total demand for flux can be determined by the combined demand of the lime plant and blast furnace. The generation of fines and waste products, which have significant value but are not usable as such, create the need for a sintering plant. From projections such as the foregoing, the complete flow of materials can be established and accommodated. The basic premise upon which this typical materials balance is predicted is that the plant will be a producer of high tonnages of non-SpecialtV- products. In the spectacular development of pure oxygen steel-making, the process using the vertical lance converter LD, is at the present time the most widely employed. Proper control of slag composition during the steel-making process appears to be essential in achieving satisfactory blowing from both the metallic yield and metallurgical points of view. The paper illustrates the primary importance of the presence of a large quantity of metal droplets in the slag during the process. In the case of both phosphorus and hematite pig iron, it can be deduced from the phase diagrams and confirmed by experimentation that nonhomogeneous slags are one of the causes of slag overflowing during the blow. The problem is however a complex one and further physicochemical studies appear necessary. Finally, the new continuous steelmakingprocess developed by IRSID is described. PEOPLE who knew Henri Marion Howe have said that he took great pleasure in speculating on the future of metallurgical processes. It is therefore not inappropriate to devote, in his memory, some description and discussion to processes unknown to the world of his time, in particular oxygen steelmaking and continuous steelmaking. The first industrial application to steelmaking of tonnage oxygen produced by air liquefaction was made in Germany just before the war and consisted in enriching the air blown through the bottom of a basic Begsemer converter in order to melt a higher proportion of scrap and to produce steels with lower nitrogen content than is achieved with conventional practice. While this process was being developed after the war, mostly in Western Europe, steelmakers were becoming increasingly familiar with the technique of blowing pure oxygen from the top, first by means of consumable steel pipes, with or without refractory shielding, and later by water-cooled lances, designed for the purpose and affording longer life. The field was then open for the wide use of pure oxygen in steelmaking, either in existing processes such as open-hearth or electric furnace, or in new processes. These new processes can be broadly classified according to the category of furnace employed. In the case of the vertical converter taken as the first category, bottom-blowing of pure oxygen causes extremely rapid wear of the refractory tuyeres, and although various expedients have been tried to overcome this drawback (such as mixing oxygen with CO2 or H2O or using high pressure oxygen), they have had to be abandoned. The solution for vertical converters has been found in top-blowing with a vertical water-cooled lance; this is known as the LD process or basic oxygen converter process.

A detailed description of the smelting and refining operations of the Amax-Homestake Lead Toller's smelter at Buick, Missouri. This is one of two completely new lead smelting and refining operations to go into operation in the United States in over forty years. Incorporated into the operation are the new methods and equipment which have been developed and lend themselves to the particular metallurgy of this plant. The text, as well as the statistical data presented, represent actual current practice after 22 months of operation, and although the metallurgy is considered to be relatively simple, several metallurgical problems unique to Missouri concentrates are discussed.

A RETURN to nonwar conditions characterized the year 1946. The acquisition and forced use, under Government auspices, of low-grade and uneconomic ores, both foreign and domestic, ceased in 1945, but there was some carry-over into the early months of 1946. The world shipping situation delayed the procurement of some foreign ores, but conditions were improving by the end of the year. No actual shortage of any important alloy was experienced, hence the industry was able to make prompt shipment of orders placed. Price levels of ferroalloys, which had remained virtually constant through the war years, were forced upward, with increases on specific products as conditions necessitated. Standard ferroman-ganese and low-carbon ferrochrome were notable exceptions in that their price did not change. No new ferroalloy smelting plants were constructed. The Defense Plant Corp.. sold the works at Ashtabula, Ohio, to the Electro Metallurgical Co. A new type of ferroalloy furnace was described at the Birmingham meeting of the Electrochemical Society. When a new mine is in the planning stages, one of the most important decisions to be made is the selection of' face haulage equipment and the interrelated transportation system to the surface. Equally important is the method of transporting personnel supplies and repair parts from the surface to the working places. When Bell & Zoller management elected to open the new Zeigler mine in the No. 9 seam near Madisonville, Ky., last year, various transportation systems were considered. It was agreed early that a slope mine would be preferred to a shaft mine, and that belt conveyors would be more economical than a rail system.

Kansas retained, for the eighth consecutive year, the fourth position in the list of oil-producing states. The total crude-oil production during 1934, as reported by purchasers to the State Corporation Commission, was 45,538,564 bbl. on 97 per cent tank table calculations of the purchasers, or 46,946,973 bbl. as carried on 100 per cent measurement in U.S. Government reports. The corresponding figures for 1933 are 40,008,940 and 41,236,021, respectively. The increase of production over 1933 was due to the rising demand for oil from Kansas, caused principally by three factors: the continued regulation of the producing branch of the industry by Federal and State authorities, which had the effect of reducing illegal production that has been so destructively competitive with Kansas crude and refined products; the normal decline of production in other areas; and, last and best, general increased demand of the public for petroleum products. The price level remained unchanged for the first time in oil history for so long a period. Kansas 36" gravity crude remained at $1 per barrel from September, 1933, and throughout 1934. Price stability and the confidence in the regulation of production to meet the consumer demand, which is increasing, brought greatly renewed interest in Kansas fields. Drilling activity has been largely in the western part of the state where expiration of leases, on large blocks of acreage, assembled before the depression, is forcing either action or loss of the lease investment carried for a long period. The drilling of these many blocks of acreage, previously assembled on geologic information, has caused the opening of more fields than during any previous year of Kansas oil history and is proceeding faster than anticipated a year ago. Interest grows within a successful enterprise, and the momentum caused by the successes of 1934 will continue in 1935 unless unusual conditions arise and end the apparently good opportunity for financial return. Geological exploration methods used in new field discoveries are shown in the tabulation of new discoveries (Table 3).

IN an article on magnesium and its alloys, Gann and Winston1 stated that manganese has a limited solubility in the liquid state. W. Schmidt2 showed a diagram according to Joseph Ruhrmann indicating that the solubility of manganese in liquid magnesium falls from about 2.65 per cent at 790°C. to about 0.5 per cent at 695°C. The curve was extrapolated to show zero solubility at the melting point of pure magnesium (Fig. I): This work suggested that at the lowest manganese contents it was not possible to detect either a eutectic or the formation of a solid solution, so that manganese was stated to be present in the structure as large individual crystals. Two years after the presentation of these results, Gann3 brought evidence to show that some manganese is capable of dissolving to form a solid solution, any excess of manganese present then assuming chiefly the form of small blue-gray particles scattered throughout the primary magnesium crystals, occasionally in clusters but seldom at the boundaries. He presented micrographs of cast alloys containing o.1, 0.4 and 1.0 per cent manganese that show a small amount of coring around the individual particles due to solid solution, and indicate that the location of the manganese particles is closely associated with the original dendritic structure of the primary crystallization. He also pointed out that the amount of manganese that can be dissolved in magnesium depends on the amount of other alloying elements present, the effect of the second alloying element being to decrease the amount of manganese retained in the alloy. E. Schmid and G. Siebe14 have determined the solid solubility of manganese and its variation with temperature by means of precision X-ray diffraction measurements. They found that the solubility is 3.4 per cent at 645°C and decreases to practically zero at 200°C. It is apparent that the X-ray diffraction measurements of Schmid and Siebel are not in agreement with the results of Ruhrmann as presented by Schmidt. This disagreement, and also the lack of data on magnesium-aluminum-manganese and magnesium-zinc-manganese systems, led the author to the present investigation, to determine accurately the liquid solubility of manganese and its variation with temperature. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD The experimental method for making solubility determinations consists of saturating the molten magnesium or the alloys with manganese at various temperatures and analyzing the dip samples taken from these melts. Melting is carried out in a cylindrical steel pot heated by an electric resistance furnace. The pot had a metallic outside coating to protect the steel against oxidation, and a graphite inside lining to prevent the contamination of the melt by prolonged contact with iron. The inside diameter of the pot was 4 in. and the depth 12 inches.

UNTIL June, 1868, it had not been attempted, either in this country or abroad, to manufacture by mechanical means, from anthracite coal-dust, artificial fuel for domestic use. Several attempts had been made to utilize coal-waste by converting it into a fuel for manufacturing purposes, but none of the processes were original, and they were merely applications of the well-known European processes and machinery, slightly modified by American ingenuity and mechanical skill. With one exception all those attempts have been failures. The great difficulty in the application of European processes and machinery has always been the limited production, and the excessive cost of the manufactured product, as compared with the cost of mining and preparing the ordinary anthracite coal for the market. The only serious and intelligent attempt to manufacture, on a large scale, artificial fuel for manufacturing purposes, has been made by the Anthracite Fuel Company, whose works are erected at Fort Ewen, near Rondout, New York. This company, organized under the auspices of the Delaware and Hudson Canal Company, had to go through the usual course of difficulties, breakages, and disappointments, which seems to be the lot of every new industry. Thanks, however, to the energy and perseverance of Mr. L. L. Crounsse, a gentleman of means, from Washington, D. C., the enterprise succeeded, and it is to-day established on a permanent basis. Until June, 1868, it had not been attempted, either in this country or abroad, to manufacture by mechanical means, from anthracite coal-dust, artificial fuel for domestic use. Several attempts had been made to utilize coal-waste by converting it into a fuel for manufacturing purposes, but none of the processes were original, and they were merely applications of the well-known European processes and machinery, slightly modified by American ingenuity and mechanical skill. With one exception all those attempts have been failures. The great difficulty in the application of European processes and machinery has always been the limited production, and the excessive cost of the manufactured product, as compared with the cost of mining and preparing the ordinary anthracite coal for the market. The only serious and intelligent attempt to manufacture, on a large scale, artificial fuel for manufacturing purposes, has been made by the Anthracite Fuel Company, whose works are erected at Fort Ewen, near Rondout, New York. This company, organized under the auspices of the Delaware and Hudson Canal Company, had to go through the usual course of difficulties, breakages, and disappointments, which seems to be the lot of every new industry. Thanks, however, to the energy and perseverance of Mr. L. L. Crounsse, a gentleman of means, from Washington, D. C, the enterprise succeeded, and it is to-day established on a permanent basis. The utilization of the reducing power of blast-furnace gas can be estimated by applying two rectifying calculations to the gas analysis. A resulting corrected CO/CO2 ratio varies inversely with furnace production. Directions for calculating the corrected CO/CO2 ratio are given, and a corrected CO/CO2 ratio is compared with actual furnace production. THE inadequacy of the normally accepted CO/CO, ratio as a measure of blast-furnace performance and furnace efficiency was discussed following the presentation of the paper by H. F. Dobscha.' In this outstanding example of careful observation on large scale blast-furnace operation, the changes occurring with beneficiated ores were: 1—A net gain in tonnage of 21.2 pct. 2—A decrease in net coke of 15.3 pct. 3—A decrease of 1.9 pct in the CO/CO, ratio. In this great change in furnace performance, the CO/CO, ratio proved itself worthless. The discussion of the inadequacy of expressing furnace performance and efficiency by the CO/CO, ratio led indirectly to the calculations forming the basis of this paper. At that time Dr. T. L. Joseph said: "We must consider difference in CO, from the stone in the two cases when we talk about the ratios of CO/C02." This statement is used for the second of the two CO/CO, ratio corrections forming the basis of this paper. The research work in attempting to find out why the furnaces could op-erate so differently with practically the same CO/CO, ratio lead not to the answer sought but, after a shift to the gaseous phase in the research work, the proof that the normal CO/ CO, ratio was outmoded and a new corrected ratio should replace it. To be of any value, any new corrected ratio should express approximate furnace efficiency and give an idea of practical furnace performance to be expected. This the normal CO/CO, ratio has failed to do. However, in the absence of anything better, some credence has been attached to the normal CO/CO, ratio.
