In several recent studies of fatigue fracture in single-phase metals, tests have been made using the condition of essentially constant plastic strain amplitude.1-4 This procedure departs from the more common practice of holding the amplitude of stress constant. From these studies have emerged two important generalizations about the behavior of metals during cyclic straining. First, measurements of the stress amplitude, required to impose the fixed plastic strain amplitude, have shown that the rate of cyclic strain hardening in annealed metals is rapid in the early cycles but decays quickly to a very low value.1"5 This behavior is displayed particularly for a range of strain amplitudes below about 2 pct and at low and high temperature. Frequently, the hardening rate becomes so low that one can determine a "saturation" stress. This stress increases with strain amplitude. In addition, an experimental relation between fracture life and plastic strain amplitude was obtained by Coffin and Taternelli,' namely N 1/2 ep = constant. For several metal:;, this equation has been shown to hold down to a strain amplitude of 0.1 pct. Whether it also holds in the "low amplitude" range (lives of more than about 105 cycles) has not been established. The importance of the saturation stress level (a value derived from strain hardening measurements) to the question of fracture life (the usual quantity of interest of fatigue testing) lies in the observation that cracks start to form when the cyclic hardening rate is essentially zero, and not before.4"5 This point suggests immediately a means of relating tests at constant stress and constant strain amplitudes. When making comparison, the stress in a constant stress test is to be identified with the saturation stress in a constant strain test. If these ideas are correct, then it should be possible, using the relation between fracture life and strain amplitude and experimental curves of saturation stress versus strain amplitude, to predict the fracture life as a function of stress, i.e. predict the S -N curve, for low stress fatigue. Saturation stress amplitude-plastic strain amplitude data, obtained in tension-compression, exist only for a few metals and for relatively high amplitudes of strain. Comparable S -N curves (push-pull loading) were known by the author only for OFHC copper. Values for this metal taken from Ref. 2 are shown in Fig. 1. The strain amplitudes, the lowest

The Effect of tin and hydrogen on the C0 parameter of a titanium. specimens were capsule cooled in water to eliminate contamination by water. Deybe-Scherrer photograms were obtained in a 114.6 mm camera with CuKa radiation. The parameters shown in Table I and Fig. 1 were calculated from the 213 (8569°) and 302 (8173.5°) reflections? no attempt being made to correct for systematic errors. The principal difference in method of preparation of specimens between this investigation and that of Worner was the use of pickling by the latter to produce X-ray diffraction samples. The possibility that hydrogen introduced by pickling was responsible for the lower a and c-parameters was investigated with the same 80 pct HNO3- 20 pct HF solutions used by Worner. The 6 and 10 at. pct specimens, the parameters of which had already been determined, were pickled and the c-parameters obtained are also shown in Fig. 1. The a-parameters, not shown, are also diminished. The quality of the lines obtained from the unetched and etched samples was unchanged, being quite sharp in both cases. It is quite possible that if corrections for systematic error carried out that the parameters obtained for the unetched samples would approach the data of Worner. In any event, the parameters of the etched samples would be still lower. The data obtained here is evidence that hydrogen in solution has contracted the c and a -parameters. Crystallographic Angles of Calcium Tung-state (Tetragonal, c/a = 2.169) K. Nassau In connection with the preparation and orientation of single crystals of calcium tungstate (Scheelite -CaWO4), the need arose for a stereographic projection for this tetragonal material. There appear to be no tetragonal projections with a c/a ratio above that of indium1 (c/a = 1.522) in the literature. In addition to its use for calcium tungstate, such a projection might find other more general applications and is accordingly presented below. The most recent X-ray diffraction work on CaWO4 is that of Swanson, Gilfrich, and Cook,2 where a summary of previous work is also found. Lattice parameters given are: a = 5.242A, c = 11.372A, and c/a = 2.169. The material is tetragonal with space group Table I, giving angles between crystallographic planes (HKL) and (hkl), was calculated from the formula3

A modelfor dilute quasi-regular interstitial solid solutions is proposed in which the solute atoms can occupy both the octahedral and tetrahedral interstices in the bee solvent lattice. The distribution function, according to which the solute atoms are apportioned between the two kinds of sites, is calculated. The partial thermodynamic functions of the solution are calculated from the distribution function. It is shown that such a solution model can explain the deviation from linearity of the Arrhenius plot of the temperature variation of the diffusivity of carbon through a iron. The published difiusivity data is analyzed to obtain numerical values for the distribution function. Finally it is shown from the numerical values of the distribution function that the possibility of dual-site occupancy will have a negligible effect on the solution thermodynamics for this system. DeSPITE the large amount of experimental data available on the thermodynamics and diffusion kinetics of dilute solid solutions of carbon in a iron, many of the elementary properties of these solutions are not understood due to real or apparent discrepancies in the experimental data. Basically there is a lack of agreement between the solubility and diffusion data obtained by anelastic damping techniques and by bulk chemical thermodynamic methods. SPecifically the heat of solution of cementite in ferrite estimated from thermodynamic measurement1, 2 is about twice as high as that determined from anelastic damping measurements.3 Furthermore the diffusion coefficient D of carbon in a iron in the range -40" to about 150°C (covering about ten orders of magnitude) determined from anelastic damping techniques is such that an Arrhenius plot of In D vs 1/T is linear. However in the range of about 300o to 850°C where mass flow measurements of D have been made (covering about four orders of magnitude), although the data merges with the low-temperature data, the Arrhenius plot departs from linearity. The object of this paper is to present a more refined model of dilute ferrite solutions in which the solute atoms can occupy two kinds of interstitial sites. The experimental data is analyzed in the light of this model and it is believed that thereby some of the anomalies can be resolved. snoek4 explained the room-temperature internal-friction peak (usually referred to as the Snoek peak) in iron as the stress-induced ordering of interstitial carbon and nitrogen atoms occupying the octahedral (0, 0, 1/2) interstices in the bee lattice. From the consideration of a hard-sphere lattice model the (0, 1/4, 1/4) tetrahedral interstices are larger than the octahedrons but their symmetry would not produce the strain dipole necessary to give rise to the Snoek peak. Thus the presence of the Snoek peak is direct evidence that the octahedrons are occupied. Since the publication of Snoek's explanation, most workers have assumed that all of the carbon and nitrogen in the a solid solution was located in the octahedral sites. THE history of the development of the strip in- dustry, mentioned in this paper, was covered in considerable detail by Stephen Badlam in his paper presented. before the American Iron and Steel Institute at its meeting in New York last October. The description of progress in rolling strip there out-lined will be found good reading by anyone interested in the subject. Quoting from Mr. Badlam's paper, "For practically thirty years, we find no record of the use of the backing-roll principle, until in 1916 the Lukens Steel Co., Coatesville, Pa., put in a 206-in. plate mill of the four-high type. This was a reversing mill with two 32-in. working rolls and two 50-in. backing rolls and is today making the widest and heaviest plate made anywhere in the world." The functioning of this mill, though rolling hot plate, is, on account of the extreme width and thinness of plate rolled, quite comparable to the rolling of wide strip either hot or cold and was a considerable factor in demonstrating the marked advantages available with the four-high or backing-roll mill for thin accurate rolling. As the writer has brought out, a demand for a product, the rolling of which required the character-istics of the backing-roll mill, was broached by the In-ternational Nickel Co. This resulted in an inquiry of March, 1924, for the building of a mill capable of cold-rolling wide nickel and monel metal sheets or strip, as mentioned. It may be of some interest to note, that whereas the .six-roll cluster mill with plain bearings was built for this installation, the mill designed by the United En-gineering and Foundry Co. for this inquiry was of the four-high type with roller bearings on the backing-roll necks, being essentially the same design as the four-high roller-bearing mill built in 1925 for the Rome Brass & Copper Co. This Rome mill, to quote again from Mr. Badlam's paper, "fulfilled every requirement, and was the model on which succeeding mills of this type were built."

The cams at present universally used in stamp mills lift the tappets with an involute form of curve, to which the surface of the tappet is always tangent; moreover, the line of contact between tappet and cam, if produced, would pass through the center of the stem. This is no doubt a desirable feature, but the writer has long believed that it would be much more desirable if the cam were to pick up the stamp without shock, and gradually increase the upward velocity of the stamp throughout its upward movement. The involute form of cam attempts to impart instantly a considerable upward velocity to the stamp, starting it from a state of rest, and the result is a destructive blow, a great deal of noise, and much wear and vibration. The writer has developed a form of cam which will lift the stamp pith a motion similar to that of the piston of an engine between the end and middle of its stroke; in other words, harmonic motion, from the woint of zero to maximum velocity. The curve will give this ideal motion only when the stamp is set for the exact drop for which the cam was designed, but the improved cam will not be as bad as the involute cam until the drop is reduced one-half. In other words, if a cam is designed for a 6-in. drop, it will be some improvement over the usual form of cam until the drop is only 3 in. Any cam, whatever its form, must of course lift the stamp in the same number of degrees of revolution; therefore, with this new form, since the stamp starts more slowly on its upward course, it must end up by going faster, the average speed being the same as with the involute cam. The stamp, after it is no longer in contact with the cam, keeps on going up a certain distance, which is easily calculated. It is therefore possible to hang up a stamp without a cam stick, if the fingers are not more than + in. longer than necessary to hold the tappet above, the cam. With this design of cam the surface of the tappet is not tangent to the surface of the cam throughout the lift. Further development of mechanical boring machines for hard and abrasive rocks will be effected by the development of more efficient rock cutting tools or the evolution of entirely new rock excavating principles. Presently the cutting tools suitable for extremely hard rocks and successfully and economically used with raise and tunnel boring machines are tungsten carbide insert big hole cutters. This paper explains the design, rock cutting principles, and actual boring operations to illustrate the capabilities and applications of tungsten carbide (TC) insert cutters. While the rate of borehole advance may fall short of the rapid excavating results achieved with soft rock boring machines, the cutter described in this paper may prove to be the most suitable tool in hard rock excavation for many years to come. DEFINITION OF HARD ROCK Existing bored excavations in hard abrasive rocks are proof of the economic application of new methods and mechanical rock boring in the mining industry. Most of the experience in cutting hard to extremely hard rocks has been gained in raise boring where relatively short and small diameter openings are bored. This poses a lesser risk regarding cutter cost than a long and large diameter tunnel and has therefore promoted the testing of various cutter products. Many types of rocks and geologic conditions were en- countered and actual test data was recorded in materials of up to 100,000 psi uniaxial compressive strength. To clarify the term hard to extremely hard, a 1970 interpretation of rock strength which was recently used is adopted and expanded in this paper.

Production of crude oil in the U.S.S.R. during 1940 is estimated at 222,600,000 bbl., as compared with the revised figure for the preceding year of 220,866,000 bbl., an increase of 0.79 per cent, and at least 20 per cent under the planned output. Baku district (Transcaucasus) remained the outstanding producing area, accounting for 72.33 per cent of the country's production, and this relative importance of the Apsheron Peninsula oil fields will probably continue lor many years to come. In the North Caucasus the Grozny-Dagestan area further extended its decline and the current production in this district amounts to only 6.06 Per cent Of the total U.S.S.R. output, as compared with 35.76 Per cent in 1931 The production of the Kuban-Maikop district remained virtually ullchanged from the preceding year, amounting to 7.64 per cent of the country's total. The Caucasian Province, therefore, in I940 produced 86.03 Per cent of the total production of the U.S.S.R. The promising new Permian Basin district, called Ural-Volga, and referred to sometimes as the "Second Baku," increased its production appreciably during 1940 and the output of that area amounted to 8.31 per cent of the country's total, as compared with 6.35 per cent during 1939. Production in the secondary districts of Russia continued unchanged though some new discoveries in the Emba salt-dome basin suggest that the output of that district may show some increase during the coming years. The drilling operations in Russia during 1940 reached a stage of virtual breakdown and the original footage plans were fulfilled only to the extent of around 50 per cent, while exploration drilling schedules were fulfilled only to the extent of about 25 to 35 per cent. This condition was due to the obvious lack of modern drilling rigs, of good drill pipe and of strong casing. Extended breakdowns occurred with deeper drilling, particularly because with few good drilling rigs available speed was being attempted with rotation rates that the inferior drill pipe and bits could not stand. Twistoffs and endless fishing jobs resulted. The difficulties became so serious a handicap to the Soviet oil industry that it was found imperative to order American drilling equipment and pipe in quantity, a policy that was never favored in the U.S.S.R because it requires expenditure of gold or exchange in major volume, and such exchange usually is reserved only to less bulky key items or to orders directly connected with armaments; also, oil-field machinery is very bulky and the prevailing lack of bottoms makes the transport of the indicated equipment a major problem. But little progress was similarly made in other branches of the Soviet oil industry. NO new major pipe-line construction work was undertaken, consequently the railroads continued to be overburdened with traffic that could be much more effectively handled by pipe lines. No new refinery construction of any magnitude was initiated, though several plants that had been in course of construction for several years were completed during 1940 and operation 554

FOLLOWING the passage of resolutions by a num-ber of the western local sections, which have beer printed in previous issues, the Board of Directors appointed a committee consisting of Messrs. Reynders, DeGolyer, Taylor and Merica, to call on the Director of the Budget, and to bring these resolutions to his attention. In response to a request to the committee Mr. Reynders has addressed the following letter to General Lord. In response to a suggestion made in the course of the conference held between you and President DeGolyer of this Institute at Washington on Oct. 6, I present herewith a brief statement of the reasons that have led the mining engineers and metallurgists of this country to urge upon the Government a policy of increasing support from year to year to the United States Geological Survey and the Bureau of Mines. While these are not the only technical bureaus to which we look for data and guidance in our work of winning and rendering useful the mineral re-sources of the country, they are the ones on which we chiefly rely and the usefulness of which extends over all the industries which are based on mines and mining. In calling this matter to your attention and to that of the departments in which these bureaus are situated, I am acting on behalf of a special committee appointed by the Board of Directors and which includes men in close and intimate contact with the iron, coal, petroleum, metals and metallurgical industries; men well qualified by experience and position to voice the real feeling of these industries. The subject is not a new one to our Board, which has long kept a watchful eye on the work of the two bureaus as would be natural in that the American Institute of Mining Engineers, represents the largest group of technical men and executives and the one of most wide-spread interest in the American mineral industries. With 9000 members and. 27 local chapters scattered among the mining states, the Institute is in a peculiarly favorable position to know and to set out the feeling among mining men and metal-lurgists as to the proper scope of activities of these Federal bureaus, the quality of their work, and the gaps in knowl-edge that most need filling.

This Committee, formerly known as the Membership Committee, had its title changed as above by the new Constitution which was adopted February, 1928. During the year 1928, 607 applications for membership were submitted to the Committee for its action; and after careful consideration 601 were recommended to the Board of Directors for election to the various grades. Of this number 597 accepted election and became members during 1928. The changes in the membership resulting therefrom are set forth in tabular form on the following page. The Rocky Mountain members, who now appear in this list for the first time, were added pursuant to the action taken at the Annual Meeting

Variations of a very reliable geochemical field test for beryllium developed by Patten and Ward, have been adapted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines to facilitate rapid testing of reconnaissance samples and to aid in rapid examination of known occurrences. Although several qualitative tests for detecting beryllium have been described in the literature,1,2,3, the Patten-Ward4 morin geochemical field method has the advantages of being rapid and being quantitative for minute amounts of beryllium. In addition to the morin field method, Patten, in cooperation with Griffitts, have developed a contact- print method for determining beryllium in hand specimens.5 The semiquantitative method can be used for rapid screening of samples in exploration or reconnaissance work. The use of beads for fusing samples provides a more rapid test, but gives less accurate results than the method developed by Patten and Ward. The semiquantitative method, however, requires less equipment and combines three stock solutions into one reagent for easy application. Estimates of samples in the range from 3 to 1000 ppm varied from about 0.25 to 5 times the actual beryllium content.

Some simple models of solutions are described; these include the regular solution, the subregular solution, and the quasichemical model. The assunzption underlying these models, the physical signzficance thereof, and the experimental manifestations are discussed. Examples are presented from the fields of liquid and solid metallic solutions, liquid slags, mattes, liquid and solid ionic solutions, and mixed carbides to show under what conditions and for which systems these solution models are fair descriptions. The deviations of real solutions from the models are of theoretical interest. Some such deviations, both for dilute and for concentrated solutions, arc pointed out and their Physical sigtzzficance discussed. DURING the past half century there has been a gradual accumulation of thermodynamic data for systems of interest to the metallurgist. There remain many gaps in the data, however, and the metallurgist must often face the problem of estimation of thermodynamic quantities where measured values do not exist. One might hope that the experimental progress would be matched by theoretical advances which would make such estimations possible with a high degree of confidence. However, theoretical progress has been disappointingly slow even for the simplest kinds of solutions, and since the multicomponent systems in which the metallurgist is interested are very complex, one cannot expect theory to be of much help to the metallurgist. In this situation, therefore, it seems worthwhile to examine some simple models of solutions from two points of view: firstly, to see if such crude models represent the thermodynamic facts in as many types of solutions as possible sufficiently well for the needs of the metallurgist, and secondly to see what the deviations from such models show to be important for consideration by theorists. BOND ENERGY MODELS OF SOLUTIONS The simple models that we will examine from these points of view may be termed statistical models, in that they are concerned with the thermodynamic consequences of some simple assumptions about the energy of an assembly of atoms, molecules, or ions, and do not inquire into the physical basis of the interaction. The underlying assumption of these models is that the energy of an assembly of molecules (by which we include also atoms or ions) is given by the sum over all interaction energies of molecules taken two at a time; we will discuss only those models in which the pairwise interactions are restricted to those between nearest neighbors. Thus, in a pure substance of bond energy EAA, the internal energy (with respect to some specific reference state) will be expressed as NAA EAA where NAA is the number of nearest-neighbor pairs. A solution of molecules A and B will be characterized by NAA EAA + NBB EBB + NAB EAB where the Eij represent the bond energies of the nearest-neighbor i-j pairs. If one assumes that the EAA and EBB are the same in the pure components as in the solution, and that the coordination numbers in the two pure substances and in the solution are the same, then the energy of the solution with respect to the pure components (i.e., the energy of solution) is a function of the following linear combination of the bond energies: EAB - 1/2(EAA +EBB) = w. The thermodynamically ideal solution is defined as one in which the activity of each component is equal to the mole fraction of that component at all concentrations and all temperatures. With the exception of exploration geological work that is being prosecuted in various parts of the mainland of Arabia, the only new developments in Arabia during 1934 were on Bahrein Island, which is in the southwestern portion of the Persian Gulf, approximately 25 miles from the mainland of Arabia. Here the Standard Oil Co. of California, through its wholly owned subsidiary, The Bahrein Petroleum Co., Limited, has continued to carry on a systematic drilling campaign and has constructed camps, pipe line and marine loading facilities. During 1934 eight wells have been completed at depths ranging from 2058 to 2253 ft. These wells have shown average initial productions ranging from 1500 to 5000 bbl., with one, No. 15, estimated as being capable of flowing as much as 11,000 bbl. per day. The oil is asphaltic in character and has a gravity range of from 32' to 34' A.P.I. The locating of all new wells has followed a plan of orderly development, with the ultimate object of obtaining efficiency of operation and maximum production. The wells are taking a penetration of 200 to 250 ft. of the lower or so-called Main productive zone. The upper oil zone, which is cased off, includes 300 to 400 ft. of alternating limestones, clays and shales and carries a heavier oil under lower pressures. The Main zone is similar lithologically to the upper zone. Micro-fauna collected from cores have shown that the oil occurs in formations of lower Eocene and Cretaceous age. Development to date has not progressed sufficiently so that either the maximum thickness of the oil-bearing horizons or the limits of the field can be determined. Something over 10,000 acres has been proven to date. Among other developments leading toward the marketing of oil from Bahrein during 1934 was the construction of a marine loading terminal. This included the laying of over 3 miles of 12-in. submarine pipe line from the small island of Sitra out into the harbor, terminating in 50 ft. of water; also the laying of more than 10 miles of gathering lines from the producing area to the terminal. Three crude oil working tanks with floating roofs were erected on Sitra Island, having a capacity of 250,000 bbl. A pumping plant was provided having a capacity of 5700 bbl. of oil per hour. That because neither in heating nor in cooling can the transformation begin before the temperature reaches Ae 1, though it may be delayed by lag till after the temperature has passed beyond Ae 1, therefore Ae 1 should be at or below the observed beginning of Ac 1 and at or above the observed beginning of Ar 1, and, a fortiori, it should be at or below the observed maximum of Ac 1, and at or above the observed maximum of Ar 1. It may be necessary to take these maxima into consideration in view of the experimental difficulty of detecting these beginnings.

INTRODUCTION ASARCO Incorporated purchased the East Tennessee Zinc Mines of the American Zinc Company and commenced operating on November 29, 1971. Presently, three mines are operating producing 6620 t/d (7300 stpd). The ore mined is sphalerite which occurs In lower Ordovician carbonates of the upper Knox Group and occurs in open space and fracture filling. Orebodies range from 3 to 46 m (10 to 150 ft) thick with dips from flat to 20º. The mining method is random room and pillar modified by shrinkage and bench stoping. Like other mining departments, the mining group at the Tennessee Mines Division is constantly looking for methods to improve productivity and safety and to reduce mining costs. This involves testing new equipment, trying new ore extraction ideas and making mining plant alterations to meet changes in operating conditions. The areas of change that will be described in this paper are longhole raising, jumbos and LHD loading, shaft sinking, conveyor transport of ore and sublevel haulage developments. LONGHOLED RAISES Raise driving has always been a hazardous occupation for miners and today it is becoming more difficult to get competent people for this kind of work. This problem has led us to seek an easier, safer way in which to excavate raises. Much criticism has been directed at the Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 from many sources, but few specific charges have been leveled, at least publicly. Yet, if the criticism is truly valid and can ever hope to become constructive, the issues must be approached head on. Therefore, the authors consider this an initial article and invite responses from others for contributions in subsequent issues. Dialogue is today's popular term and perhaps many of the problems associated with the implementation of the Act are the lack of communication between interested parties. There are two criticisms generally made concerning the philosophical approaches taken in the Act. The first is that there is an over-kill in some of the legislation, some provisions are not justified based on past accident history and economic considerations. Generally speaking in this category, no order of priority was considered consistent with safety and economy. The second category includes those situations where new provisions were imposed to improve safety in one area without adequately considering the consequences in another area, let alone the economics of the situation. While the authors do not always agree with the placement of items in these two categories by some industrial representatives, they will give specific examples that they believe may have a certain degree of validity.

During the past year, geochemical prospecting appears to have come of age as an exploration method, and its acceptance by the mining industry is widespread. There is a growing recognition that applied geochemistry is a scientific tool and must be performed and interpreted by scientific personnel who are trained in its utilization. At present, most personnel training is done by geochemical departments in government organizations and industry groups. Most schools in the United States and Canada do not offer geochemical training, particularly at graduate levels, due to faculty limitations, lack of budgetary support and the erroneous impression that applied geochemistry is not sufficiently academic. As a result, some companies have found it expedient to send selected personnel to European schools for advanced training. A critical personnel shortage now exists will probably continue into the near future. Indications are that the rate of development of new geochemical techniques has levelled off, and the probability of new breakthroughs is not high. Present research is essentially limited to efforts by government agencies and a few private companies. Progress has been the most rapid in the development of analytical techniques, but the need remains for investigation into sampling technology and the development of more quantitative methods for the interpretation of geochemical results. Geochemists need a better understanding of the numerous physical and chemical factors which affect and control primary and secondary dispersion phenomena in all geologic environments. Detailed studies must be made of the relationship between geologic, geochemical and geophysical factors. With better interpretive techniques, the return on the geochemical exploration dollar will increase.

USUALLY the search for clays is left to chance in unexplored areas. A local working by the inhabitants or an outcrop is often the only guide. If the conditions of genesis of clays were always known, a set of general rules could be drawn up that would apply to this search. For example, a certain type of clay might be found wherever the sediment indicated a favorable environment. This paper sums up the considerable amount of knowledge that has been accumulated about the genesis of sedimentary days and offers some rules to be observed in prospecting for new clays. ANALYTICAL STUDY OF SEDIMENTARY CLAYS Clays may be found in many formations, both recent and ancient. All the intermediums exist between the deep-sea deposit and the mud deposited by a stream. In order to find out whether the nature of clay deposits depends on the environments in which they were formed, the samples used in the investigation described herein were very carefully chosen from: (1) ancient sedimentary series (a few from recent ones), (2) zones where conditions of genesis are typical. Ancient Formations Ancient formations were chosen because they are less difficult to sample than the bottom sediments of present-day lakes and seas. Moreover, a geo- logical section makes it possible to define the conditions of genesis of a deposit based on its facies, fossils, stratigraphic relations, and paleography. A present-day deposit is defined only by its aspect at the moment. Its previous history may have caused mixtures, alterations, and changes of environment, which escape detection. Typical Conditions of Genesis Samples from ancient deposits were taken from zones where typical conditions of genesis prevailed. Only clays from marine, lagoonal, and lacustrine environs are concerned in this study because the nature of the original en- vironments could be affirmed. In this way an inventory of the nature of sedimentary clays has been made for rocks formed in typical and individual environments; therefore the extent of the results that may be drawn from such a study will need discussion.

Plans for the fall meeting of the AIME, to be held in conjunction with the Centennial of Engineering -marking the 100th anniversary of the Society of Civil Engineers-indicate that the Chicago gathering will be one of the most significant in Institute history. Headquarters for the six divisions represented will be the Palmer House. Twenty technical sessions will be held from September 3 to 6, with papers of industry-wide impact to be presented. The papers will follow the theme of the celebration-a century of engineering progress. The MBD will start the ball rolling with morning and afternoon sessions Thursday, September 4. A luncheon also will be held. MBD has scheduled morning and afternoon sessions for the following day as well. MGGD, Iron and Steel, and the Coal Div., will hold sessions Friday afternoon. The Industrial Minerals Div. plans an executive meeting, 5 pm, Friday. Geology Subdivision is slated for morning and afternoon sessions Saturday. The Coal Div. will meet again Saturday morning.
