The past five years have seen communications techniques and hardware developed by the Bureau of Mines and its contractors increasingly brought into use in U.S. mines. The Bureau philosophy has been to help develop and introduce new hardware that goes as far as possible toward meeting the mining industry's needs. The Bureau programs are also designed to provide continuous fallout of new communications capabilities which are introduced to the mine operators as they occur. As more progress is made in meeting mine communications needs, it is hoped that the mining industry will readily adopt the equipment and techniques that it finds most useful in meeting its individual needs. This paper reports on recent advances achieved in the development of improved mine communications systems. In May 1975 the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) conducted a mine communications technology meeting to provide a brief overview of the USBM communications technology developments in the past 5 yr. This meeting lasted for 1 1/2 days. Therefore, I have elected to narrow this paper to a brief review of recent underground mine communication developments. THE characteristics of alloyed anodes and their influence on the products of electrolysis and power consumption have been noted previously in the literature.1 This paper presents data in continuation of the subject given in an earlier paper by the authors.2 As noted in the authors' previous paper, the objectives of this work are the reduction in the cell voltage and the purity of the cathode product resulting from the use of alloyed lead anodes. The fundamental facts developed in the previous paper were: (1) that the presence of a small amount of calcium lowers the anode potential approximately 50 per cent. below that of pure lead; and (2) that thallium when present to the extent of 4 per cent. rendered the anode practically stable, thereby lowering the contamination of the cathode by lead to a very insignificant amount. The specific features determined in this recent work are as follows: 1. The lowest limit of calcium in the lead which will still give maximum lowering of the anode potential. 2. The characteristics of the thallium-calcium-lead anode. 3. The characteristics of the silver-calcium-lead anode. 4. The characteristics of the thallium-silver-calcium-lead anode. It was determined that 0.1 per cent. calcium in the anode was sufficient to lower the anode potential approximately 50 per cent. Table 1 shows the characteristics of alloyed anodes tested. The anode composed of 0.1 per cent. calcium, 4 per cent. thallium, and 95.9 per cent.

Two processes have been developed for improving the quality of molten-aluminum alloys before casting. The Filtration Process. which involves passing molten metal through a packed bed of granular filter material, is a rapid means of removing finely divided particles. It has the most potential in those instances where removal of inclusions is of primary importance. The Combination Fillration-Inert Gas Fluxing Process inuolzles introduction of an inert gas so that it will diffuse countercurrent to metal flow through the filter bed of granular material. Dissolved hydrogen is removed from the metal in addition to removal of finely divided particles. The Combination Process is most useful where both inclusion removal and attainment of conistently low-hydrogen-content metal are important. Metal treated by the Combination Process is of higher and more uniform quality than heretofore attainable with prolonged chlorine fluxing. Costs of the Combination Process can, for the most part, be offset by savings derived from high recoveries and increased production of superior-quality products. IMPROVEMENT in the quality of molten-aluminum alloys is secured generally through the use of some fluxing practice in a crucible, holding furnace, or ladle involving either gaseous or solid fluxing media. Typical fluxing agents may include the gases nitrogen, argon, or chlorine used either singly or as mixtures and the solids aluminum chloride or hexachloroethane. Regardless of the fluxing means used, the primary objectives are the adequate removal of both metallic and nonmetallic inclusions and reduction of hydrogen content to an acceptably low level. The ultimate goal is to produce ingots and cast products of high quality free from inclusions and porosity. The development of ultrasonics for measurement of internal quality, tightening of quality controls, and the application of the aluminum alloys to new or different commercial fields have been responsible for an ever increasing demand for improvement of quality of both cast and fabricated products. This demand for high quality has not been restricted to any single type of product. On the contrary, the demand encompasses about the entire variety of products including those for fabrication, those to be machined, buffed, or finished for decorative purposes, and those for critical applications where both surface and internal quality is of utmost importance. In many instances products acceptable in the 40's would now be scrapped as unacceptable by these higher present-day standards. With this ever increasing demand for higher quality, it became apparent at Alcoa that conventional means of melt treatment were inadequate in many instances and new approaches were necessary. Consequently the research program was intensified with attention focused on metal treatment during transfer in order to reduce the furnace processing time to a minimum in an effort to attain the desired results at a minimum of additional expense. As a result of this intensive research program which covered numerous variations and adaptations of conventional methods in addition to new methods of melt treatment, several new processes were developed, two of which will be described here. The first of these, a method of melt filtration, was patented in February, 1959.l The second process involving combination filtration—inert gas fluxing was patented in June, 1962. 2 Other melt-treatment processes developed during this period of investigation were patented as listed.3 FILTRATION PROCESS General Description. THE four papers making up this symposum have been prepared espe-cially for those who have no knowledge of seismograph prospecting. To many people mathematics is a formidable subject, and many are discouraged from studying seismograph prospecting under the mistaken assumption that the mathematical requirements are severe. In the papers presented here there is not a single mathematical equation. We believe that considerable competence in dealing with some of the most important problems of this work can be attained without any mathe-matical training whatever. At the present time, there is a real need for interpretation of results by persons thoroughly competent to bring geologic experience and imagination to bear on data that are subject to multiple interpretation from a strictly physical viewpoint. Likewise, those charged with the responsibility of planning seismo-graph exploration campaigns would do well to become familiar with as much as possible of the technical aspects of the work. They would then be in better position to judge of its success in individual cases. It has often been said that the seismograph is a new structure-finding tool for the geologists to use. Using a tool and using its product are two different things. One does not use an automatic screw-threading machine when he buys a box of screws at the hardware store. Neither does the geologist

STATIC soil investigations with more or less heavy loads and extensive borings do not always have efficient results; also, they are very expensive. The new geophysical method of dynamic tests described herein is simple and cheap and avoids several disadvantages of the routine investigation, thus forming a useful supplement to the older methods and even at times replacing various static tests. The fundamental principle of dynamic soil tests consists in the appli-cation of artificial vibration. The technique employed is essentially geophysical in nature and in some respects is akin to seismic studies. Artificial vibration may be excited by centrifugal forces resulting from eccentrically supported rotating masses. The reactions of soil and structures caused by these vibrations may be measured. Their dynamic constants, such as amplitudes, phase speeds, damping, reflection, and interference effects, can be investigated. This geophysical method has been used for several years with increasing success. The results of these tests, summarized at the end of the paper, indicate that this method opens a new field for the practical engineer in investigating soils (capacity and formation), foundations, dams and structures, and especially buildings that must withstand earthquakes.

INTRODUCTION The selection of trackless equipment for underground mining can be a complex engineering problem due to the wide range of equipment sizes and operating modes. Computer simulation is particularly useful in estimating the performance of different systems for specific rock- handling problems. A hybrid simulator, incorporating some of the features of deterministic and stochastic simulation, was developed in order to handle not only queuing delays at loading and dumping points, but a1 so traffic interferences. Any number of vehicles can operate in any one of four basic modes (LHD, LAF, FEL, HFC) in parallel or in series. If the units use common roadways, loading and dumping points, certain operating delays will occur and be registered by the simulator and thus give a better evaluation of the marginal productivity of each additional unit. Based on a typical layout of drawpoints and ore passes for the sub-level stoping method, productivity and operating costs of different rock-handling systems will be examined. 1 . COMPUTER SIMULATION Numerous applications of computer simulations are reported in the 1iterature for various mining problems. Depending on the complexity of the system to be studied, simulation models were conceived with different degrees of sophistication. Three different types of simulators are generally recognized: stochastic, deterministic, and hybrid. Stochastic or Monte Carl o simulation randomly generates items, transactions, or events from some population defined by a frequency distribution and produces some expected future situations. Because this type of simulation is governed by the input of probability distributions, it requires a detailed knowledge of the system to be simulated; it implies expensive and time-consuming studies and reports to gene- rate this input information. A major short- coming of stochastic techniques is in new equipment evaluation, where the lack of data is unavoidable, and in new system design where the conditions are outside the range of the known historical behavior of the equipment. However, probabilistic simulation is almost essential for the study of cyclic queues and traffic problems. Deterministic simulation studies a system by generating performances on the basis of the mechanical capabilities of the vehicles and the physical limitations of the mining scheme. It is based on the engineering principle that the engine converts its energy into a rimpull at the wheels, which is in turn opposed by the rolling resistance and the grade of the ground; the machine is accelerated or decelerated until the tractive and resistive forces are in equilibrium, at which point it moves at constant speed. The information required by this technique, such as rimpull charts and equipment weight, is readily available from equipment suppliers. However, equipment performance at the mining site is also dictated by human and environmental conditions and changes with time and usage. For this reason, deterministic simulation generally overestimates the system capabilities; these must then be adjusted by efficiency factors based on observation and experience. Recently, hybrid simulation models, using both stochastic and deterministic techniques, have been built with some of the events generated stochasticly and others being deterministic. This compromising approach originated at the Pennsylvania State University. O'Nei1 (1966) designed a simulator for truck-and- shovel operations that allows for transportation from multiple faces to mu1tiple destinations. Each truck performs according to its mechanical capabilities while its loading and dumping time and its load fluctuate according to specific probability distributions. A major advance in the simulation of mining systems is due to Sanford's model (1969) of underground coal mining operations. The originality of the model is in the use of an Executive System Control which sets up the initial system, de- fines the operation conditions , and instructs continuously four sub-assemblies representing shuttle cars, trains, continuous miners , and conveyors, which in turn generate a feed-back of their movement to the Executive Control System for further instructions. The model has enough flexibility to simulate simultaneous and sequential jobs that characterize any dynamic system. Sanford's early work evolved slowly to what is known today as the Under- ground Materials Handling Simulator for coal mining (Manula, 1974).

MUCH discussion has occurred as to the use or uses which might be made after the war of either or both .of the large diameter (24 inch and 20 inch) War Emergency pipe lines built by y the United States Government during the war, to move crude petroleum and refined products such as gasoline and light distillate fuels. Indeed, the disposition and future use of these lines constitutes, in the minds of many people, one of the most important problems of postwar readjustment in the Oil Industry. The two lines, running from points in Texas to the New York-New Jersey-Philadelphia area, were constructed only because of the inability during the war to continue normal ocean tanker movements from the Gulf Coast to the East Coast. Physically they could continue after the war to move crude or refined products, and it appears that lines of such large diameter as these, if operated at or near capacity, could move these liquids at costs per barrel which might be considered in the same general cost range as for tanker movements.1 If, therefore, we were to look forward at the end of the war to a shortage of tankers, it is probable that the continued use of these pipe lines for petroleum movements to the East Coast would be worth considering, as against building new tankers to take over the movement, provided there were no other economic or national defense reasons for restoring tanker fleets and no other better use for the pipe lines. Because of the extensive tanker construction program which has been and still is in progress, and because of our Navy's marked success in combating the submarine problem, it appears to be quite possible, however, that instead of a shortage of tankers at the end of the war, we may have a surplus instead. If this should turn out to be the case, then there would seem to be considerable doubt that these lines would continue to be used for moving petroleum or products to the East Coast at the expense of tying up tankers. It would hardly seem probable that the owner of any such tankers would ship via one of the large lines at the expense of tying up one of its own tankers, unless the pipe line tariff rate charged was lower than the out-of-pocket cost of operating a tanker as against the out-of-pocket cost of keeping it tied up. And considering that a substantial part of the cost of operating a tanker goes on even when it is tied up, it is very difficult to figure out how any pipeline tariff could be established that would be low enough to compete with individually owned tankers that otherwise would be idle. Certainly a pipe line tariff rate high enough to cover direct costs plus even a low rate of depreciation and return on the investment would be far above the out-of-pocket tanker operating costs. In view of these considerations, it has seemed desirable to examine with some care some of the various alternatives that have been suggested as to other possible uses to which these lines might be put. One of these is for transportation of natural gas to the New York-New Jersey Philadelphia area. This Eastern area, located at the destination of these lines, contains the heaviest concentration of population in the United States, and is not now served with natural gas. At the other end of the lines lie the greatest discovered natural gas reserves in the United States, if not in the world, and many

AS in former years, Pechelbronn, in Alsace, was the most important producer in 1936, with 484,453 bbl., of which 283,151 from drilling and 201,302 from mining showed a slight increase in comparison with the preceding year. Gabian, in France and Tliouanet, in Algeria, are nearly exhausted. At Gabian, four wells drilled in intermittent exploitation produced during the year 2893 bbl. Four wildcats, one of which is producing, constituted all the activity in research on French territory. In Morocco, some wildcats have been drilled in search for new fields and exploratory drilling has been done in Tselfat and in Djebel Bou Draa in known fields, but the results have been inconsiderable. In Tunisia there was a gas outburst in Kebir 1, which is the first practical result obtained. In Madagascar, the Andrafiavelo region has been left and a new region has been tried in Folakara with the Tsimororo. In French Equatorial Africa, one drilling is in progress.

A novel method of reconditioning vertical rock openings which are on the verge of collapse has been developed, ant1 a world patent applied for, by LKAB, the Swedish iron ore mining company. Without anyone descending into the dangerous opening, workers can place concrete reinforcement in the unstable section using sand-filled canvas tubes which LKAR development engineers are calling "stockings." First application of the new technique was in several inclined ore pockets which form part of the underground crushing and loading station at LKAB's Kiirunavaara mine in Swedish Lapland. LKAB experience demonstrated that with other methods it took about three months to repair a pocket, and neighboring pockets had to be closed while repairs were underway. With the new stocking method, the work was completed in three weeks with no disruption of nearby activities. Production losses amounted to 10% over the three-week period, as opposed to 30% with other methods. The simplified technique could save millions of dollars in underground maintenance, according to LKAB.

THE high tension belt conveyor is introducing a new and tremendously expanded era of low cost bulk material handling. High tension belt conveyors are generally those installations involving very long centers, high lifts, or drops, in which the belts are stressed up to their maximum tension values, and further, where the belt construction provides tension capacity far beyond what is possible with conventional belt constructions. With these high tension installations, the magnitude of the forces involved demands careful refinement of accepted design practice in order to achieve optimum balance of all factors.

DURING the past few years geochemical testing for traces of heavy metals in water, soil, rock, and vegetation has aroused increasing interest. Various techniques for field and laboratory determinations have been described in the literature, as have some of the results of application. However, little information has been published regarding application to glacial terrain. Over 90 pct of the Canadian Shield is overburdened, resulting in high costs for mineral exploration once the outcropping ore deposits have been found. This has been largely responsible for the widespread application of mining geophysics in Canada, permitting concentration of effort on area or zones considered most favorable. However, geophysical interpretation has its limitations, since at least 90 pct of the structures indicated thereby contain no valuable minerals. A more direct approach is therefore highly desirable. If underlying base metal mineralization can be detected by sampling soil or vegetation at moderate cost this should prove of great help in locating new discoveries or extending known ones. A large proportion of Canadian ore deposits contain appreciable copper or zinc, even where these are not the principal economic metals. Consequently the field of application is a broad one.

IN 1925, Harry Howard Stout, then metallurgist for Phelps Dodge Corporation, while investigating the cleaning of cathode copper by various gases at elevated temper-atures below the melting point of the metal, observed in the laboratory that particles of pure copper heated in a closed tube filled with hydrogen seemingly "stuck together." By further investigation he found that there was actual crystal growth across the boundaries of the particles of pure metal; in other words, there was a complete new crystal realignment and growth throughout the newly formed copper mass. It was coalescence, not adhesion; the several parti-cles had become one unit. From this dis-covery has been developed the coalescence process, whereby copper of cathode purity is squirted out in semifabricated form from an extrusion press, by the appli-cation of about 30c0 tons pressure on a 10-in. piston. Stout decided that cathode copper pro-duced by electrolytic deposition was the logical source of the pure copper required for the coalescence process, but as there was no way of reducing the ordinary tough commercial cathodes to the small particles required he was confronted by a serious problem at the outset. Under his direction, this problem was solved by William H, Osborn and Harry Howard Stout, Jr. They developed the process and technique for producing cathode copper in brittle, friable form, and to them must be given the greater part of the credit for this phase of the development program as well as for that relating to the gas cleaning of the cathode particles.

This paper is a companion to the one by George A. Morrison on Mining a Deep Limestone Mine in Ohio.‡ Barberton is 8 miles west of Akron, Ohio, and 23 miles south of Cleveland. The underground mining of limestone at Bar-berton constitutes the world's deepest limestone mine. The stratigraphy is as follows: 0-20 ft. Loam, clay, sand and gravel. Water bearing. 2-40 ft. Fractured sandstone. Water bearing. 40-110 ft. Sandstone with interbedded shale, slightly fractured. Water bearing. 110-314 ft. Sandstone with interbedded shale, slightly fractured. Water carrying. 314-2197 ft. Shale with occasional seams of sandstone, which varies in thickness from a few inches to 4 feet. Dry. 2197-2247 ft. Limestone. Dry. 2247-2742 ft. Dolomitic limestone. Dry. 2742-2767 ft. Salt. Dry. 2767- Dolomitic limestone. Dry. All of the strata dip to the southeast, about 0.5 per cent from the horizontal. The top 110 ft. of the crust is water-bearing. The rock strata are naturally fractured to a depth of 314 ft., sufficient to allow the passage of water. In the shaft-sinking operations, a stra- turn of oil-bearing sandstone one foot thick was encountered at a depth of 520 ft., and flows of methane gas were pierced at depths of 1350 and 1952 feet. Specifications for the mine plant called for, in part, the sinking of two vertical shafts and a hoisting plant capable of producing at the rate of 300 tons per hour. No. I shaft is 550 ft. west of No. 2 shaft. Each shaft measures 8 by 17 ft. outside of steel. General features of the design (Fig. I) are: Principal set members, 6-in. H-section; connecting angles (studdles), ? by 4 by 4-in. angle irons; spacing of sets. 8 ft. centers; spacing of bearer sets, generally, 160 ft.; bearers, of 12-in. I-beams. Each bearing set featured a concrete ring about the periphery of the shaft, steel to rock, and 8 ft. in height; permanent guides, 6 by 10-in. long-leaf yellow pine, 85 per cent heart. The Shaft-sinking Operation The preliminary shaft-sinking work consisted of driving interlocked steel piling about the exterior of the shafts to depths of 35 and 32 ft., respectively, and of such horizontal dimensions as to ultimately permit the pouring of a concrete collar 2 ft. in horizontal thickness. Following the pouring of a shaft collar, a temporary wooden headframe for shaft-sinking purposes was erected. The head-frame, while ordinary, featured: (1) a storage pocket of 300 cu. ft, capacity with truck servicing facilities, and (2) pneu matically operated dump doors, which mere actuated by the hoistman, thus caring

PHOSPHORUS combines with copper in various proportions, forming true alloys, some of which are of commercial importance. These materials find wide application as deoxidizers and as a means of introducing phosphorus into other alloys, as in phosphor-bronze. Phosphor-coppers containing 10 and 15 per cent. of phosphorus are the commercial grades that are most generally offered. Each has certain advantages when used in making other alloys. The 10 per cent. grade of phosphor-copper has an advantage over the 15 per cent. in that it has a much lower melting point and can be prepared by certain methods with a much lower loss in phosphorus. The 15 per cent. grade has the advantage of lower freight rates per unit of phosphorus and, by the method to be described, a uniform product can be prepared with practically no loss of phosphorus. Alloys of copper and phosphorus containing any desired percentage of phosphorus lower than 15 per cent. can be prepared by melting together the requisite amounts of copper and 15 per cent. phosphor-copper. Processes for making phosphor-copper may be divided into two classes as follows: (1) Those depending on the smelting of phosphate rock or superphosphate of calcium with copper or copper-bearing materials, and coal or other carbonaceous material; (2) those depending on the direct combination of metallic copper and elemental phosphorus. A number of formulas for preparing phosphor-copper according to the first method have been published. The Metal, Industry' gives-the following: Superphosphate of calcium, 60 lb.; granulated copper, 301b.; finely powdered coal, 10 lb. Similar formulas are given by Brannt2 and others, and detail 'variations are covered by patents, such as those of L A Jeffs3 and H A Webster.4

Following the usual custom, three meetings are planned for the year. The Mid-Continent meeting will be held at Oklahoma City, Okla., Oct. 7 and 8, and the California meeting is planned for Los Angeles, probably also early in October. A program along the usual lines is under way for the annual New York meeting. Discussion and planning of the year's activity started in March. An effort is under way to secure papers dealing with some overlapping phases of engineering, petroleum geology, geophysics, law, economics, refining, etc. The main reason for attempting a program along these lines is the belief that unusually interesting technical papers can be obtained. The degree of specialization in the technical and related fields has permitted but few individuals to develop a sufficiently comprehensive viewpoint. Also, at times the developments in a particular field are capable of giving great stimulus toward much needed solutions of difficult problems in others fields of activity. With the coming of the period of restriction of production to market demand, many changes have occurred in policy and technique of petroleum production. Some changes have been advances, others have been of retrograde nature. It seems doubtful whether the adjustment to the condition of excess producing capacity has been complete or sound in some major respects. Many changes are in progress and others need to be initiated. The industry has excessive producing capacity so far as immediate market demand is concerned, but reserves for several years hence are generally believed insufficient. Exploration and discovery should go forward but development should proceed with caution and under control. Property rights should be clarified and protected for the new condition— without excessive cost for drilling wells that serve no purpose except that of giving some protection to property rights at the cost of an increased price to the consumer. Under the more steady condition of assured supply for the immediate future, as compared to the hand-to-mouth condition of wide-open production, a greatly advanced technique of development and production is possible and is being developed. Great progress has been made, but much remains to be done. Along some important lines progress can be effected only by better understanding between the engineer and the geologist, the lawyer, the politician, the geophysicist, etc. There is need

S., conducted under- the direct supervision of the secretaries of the four Founder Societies, has wanted to extend its activities and usefulness but it is operating right up to the limit of its budget; consequently, anything which requires the expenditure of more funds cannot be -undertaken, for the present. A great deal of time has been spent in recording, classifying, and interviewing the men listed, but owing to the business depression, only a comparatively small number of men have been placed' luring the last few months. There are men in New York from all over the country. What the Bureau needs is more positions available. With this in view, a number of high-grade engineers, themselves in need of employment, volunteered their services for a publicity campaign in the City of New York. A definite mode of procedure was evolved, and the success of the movement has been considerable, so much so that it has been thought well to call it to the attention, of members elsewhere, so that similar committees ' and campaigns might be organized in other cities. Following is a chronological arrangement of the methods used.
