Although 1930 has been a year of stagnation, proration and curtailment, the Gulf Coast has measured up to its tradition in the matter of interesting and significant discoveries. Only 2 domes and 7 new structural areas were brought into the producing column in 1930, whereas, in 1929, 13 domes and one structure were added to this list, yet a total of 14 new producing horizons were proved on various domes and structures. On 5 domes new flanks were successfully tested for commercial production. The year 1930 has shown at Barber's Hill that oil in commercial quantities may exist below salt or cap. Numerous wells have been drilled through cap, or even salt itself, into good producing sands. The past year has been particularly notable in the interest and in the number of deep holes drilled. Two wells have gone below 8000 ft. in each of the states of Texas and Louisiana, and in the two states together 14 wells have gone below 7000 ft At the beginning of the year only one well was producing below 6000 ft. in coastal Texas, while at its end, 19 wells were producing or had produced. Geophysical discoveries and activity on the Coast have waned and this type of work has moved further inland. The peaks of production at Pettus, Barber's Hill, Raccoon Bend, Refugio, Orchard and at Humble, in Texas; and at Lake Barre, Port Barre, Black Bayou, White Castle and Vinton in Louisiana, were seen this year. These were new peaks for Humble and Vinton, of course, these fields having previously gone through periods of peak flank production. In Table 1 the completions listed are for the entire month of December in both years. It is remarkable that in 1930, a year of overproduction and proration, there were actually more wildcat operations at its end than at the end of 1929; but it is gratifying that the operations in the proven fields were exactly one-half what they had been at the end of 1929. The price of A grade coastal crude, or oil below 25" Bé., has been cut from $1.30 at the beginning of the year to $1.00 at its close; and B grade, or oil above 25o Bé., has been reduced from a price range of $1.15 to $1.63 down to a range of from $0.75 to $1.22. The elastic anisotropy factors, c4,/c6,, c3,/cll, and c12/cl,, for hcp metal crystals vary significantly among the dgferent unalloyed metals. Significant variations with temperature are also found. The effects of elastic anisotropy on the dislocation in an elastic continuum with hexagonal symmetry have been investigated by computing the elasticity factors for the self-energies of dislocations in fourteen different metals at various temperatures where the elastic moduli have been reported. For most of the metals the effects of the orientation of the Burgers vector, dislocation line, and glide plane are small and isotropic conditions can be assumed without significant error. Significant effects of anisotropy are, however, found in Cd, Zn, Co, Tl, Ti, and Zr. The elasticity factors have been applied in the calculations of dislocation line tensions, the repulsive forces between partial dislocations, and the Peierls-Nabarro dislocation widths. It is predicted that the increase in elastic anisotropy with temperature in titanium and zirconium makes edge dislocations with (a), (a + c), and (c) Burgers vectors unstable in basal, pyramidal, and prism planes, respectively. The probability of stacking faults forming by dissociation of Shockley partials in basal planes also decreases with increasing c4,/c6, ratio, when the stacking fault energy is greater than 50 ergs per sq cm. The widths of screw dislocations with b = (a) in titanium and zirconium increase very significantly in prism planes and decrease in basal planes as c4,/c6, increases. The effects of elastic anisotropy on various dislocation properties in cubic crystals have received considerable attention during the past few years. In the case of cubic symmetry the departure from isotropic elasticity depends entirely on the shear modulus ratio, A = 2c4,/(cl, —c12); i.e., the medium is elastically isotropic when A = 1. Foreman1 showed that an increase in the ratio A produces a systematic lowering of the dislocation self-energy for a given orientation and Poisson's ratio. ~eutonico~, has shown that large anisotropy can have a marked effect on the formation of stacking faults by the splitting of glissile dislocations in (111) planes of fcc and (112) planes of bcc crystals. ~iteK' made similar calculations for (110) planes of bcc metals. Both studies of bcc metals showed that the large A values encountered in the alkali metals tend to reduce the repulsive forces between Shockley partial dislocations. In fcc metals, however, A does not vary over the large range encountered in bcc metals; consequently, the effect of A on the forces between Shockley partials is masked somewhat by the differences in Poisson's ratio between metals. The effect of A on the line tension of a bowed out pinned dislocation has also been investigated for cubic crystals, first by dewit and Koehler5 and more recent- ly by Head.6 In both cases the line energy model is applied and the core energy is not taken into account, thus making the conclusions somewhat tenuous with regard to the physical interpretation. Nevertheless, the fact that a large A decreases the effective line tension is clearly evident and the tendency for large A to produce conditions that make a straight dislocation unstable (negative line tensions) also seem evident. Head, in fact, shows visual microscopic evidence that stable V-shaped dislocations occur in 0 brasse6 For hcp metals the definition of elastic anisotropy is more complex and, furthermore, significant deviations from an isotropic continuum are found among a number of real hcp metals, especially at higher temperatures. The present work was carried out to survey the effects of elastic anisotropy on the elasticity factors, K, that enter into the calculations of the stress fields around a dislocation core. Some isolated analytical calculations have previously been carried out for several hcp metals but they are restricted in the dislocation orientations and temperature.8'9 The present computations are based on single-crystal elastic moduli that have appeared in the literature and consider various orientations requiring numerical computations. The results are then applied to survey the effects of temperature on the dislocation line tension and dislocation splitting in hcp metals. PROCEDURE Anisotropy Factors. The degree of elastic anisotropy in hcp crystals cannot be described by a single parameter, such as the A ratio in cubic crystals. The following three ratios must be simultaneously equal to unity in order to have an elastically isotropic hexagonal crystal: The magnitudes of these ratios at several temperatures, as computed from the existing data for the elastic moduli of unalloyed hcp metals, are given in Table I. There are no cases of complete elastic isotropy, but the large anisotropy ratios encountered in the cubic alkali metals are also missing. There are, however, several significant differences among the hcp metals, the most notable being the relatively small A and B ratios in zinc and cadmium and the differences in the magnitudes and temperature dependences of A. It has been noted that the temperature dependence of A has a consistent relationship to the occurrence of the hcp — bcc tran~formation. For cadmium, zinc, magnesium, rhenium, and ruthenium, A is less than unity at 4'~ and, with exception for rhenium, decreases with increasing temperature. In the case of rhenium, A has essentially no temperature dependence between 923' and 1123"~, so that it is clear that A does not approach unity at higher temperatures. A development drilling and bulk sampling program should furnish the following information: (1) geology of the mineralized zone, (2) quantitative data on grade and tons of material within pertinent cutoff limits, (3) physical size and shape of the deposit and areas underlain by waste as well as ore, (4) mineralogical and metallurgical characteristics of the ore, (5) physical characteristics of the ore, (6) bulk samples for metallurgical testing and grade, (7) data on factors that affect mining operations, such as ground water and ground conditions. The method and equipment best suited for a particular drilling job depend upon the geologic features of the mineral deposit to be tested.

To meet the demands of the planned development of Turkish steel industry an Iron ore processing plant is under construction at Divrigi, Anatolia and is planned to be commissioned mid of 1978. The plant has been designed for an annual capacity of 4 million tons of crushed magnetitic ore. About 1.9 million tons of coarse concentrate of 25-2 mm size and 1.3 million tons of pellet feed concentrate will be produced by wet screening, dry magnetic concentration of coarse size fractions and wet magnetic concentration of fine size fraction. The fine magnetic concentrate will be reground and filtered to prepare the feed for the pelletizing plant.

Fram a study of 63 systematic alloy modifications it was found that molybdenum, tungsten, and columbium, added individually or simultaneously, and increases in chromium cause major improvements in 1200°F rupture strengths of Cr-Ni-Co-Fe base alloys. Rupture strengths were a function of the effect of composition modifications on both the inherent creep resistance and the amount of deformation the alloy would tolerate before fracture. THIS paper describes the results of an investigation of a series of alloys with systematic variations of the chemical composition of the following basic alloy: C, 0.15: Mn, 1.7; Si, 0.5; Cr, 20.0; NI, 20.0: Co, 20.0: Mo, 3.0; W, 2.0; Cb, 1.0; N, 0.12; Fe, 32.0 pct. The 62 modifications of this alloy were produced under conditions which minimized all factors influencing properties at high temperatures except composition. Melting, fabrication, and heat treatment were carefully maintained constant. Stress-rupture properties at 1200°F were used as the primary criteria of evaluation of the alloy. The objective of the study was to obtain data for determining the fundamental role of the influence of alloying elements on properties of heat-resistant alloys at high temperatures. In addition the results should be useful in determining optimum chemical compositions, the sensitivity of properties to variations in composition, and the degree to which alloy content could be reduced while retaining worthwhile properties. It is difficult or impossible to develop correlations between properties at high temperatures and systematic variations in chemical composition from published data for wrought heat-resistant alloys developed for gas turbines.' ' The main reason for this is the extreme dependence of the properties on conditions of treatment of the alloys." In most cases variation in final treatments between alloys so influences the properties that the influence of chemical composition is obscured. In addition it is recognized Table I. The development of heat-resistant alloys has been based on the gradual accumulation of data roughly related to composition from extensive testing programs. There is every reason to believe that in most cases the optimum compositions have been achieved by this procedure in the alloys commercially available. There are, however, very little data showing the influence of systematic variations of composition free from the influence of other factors, particularly for alloys of the type investigated. Several investigators of cast alloys have demonstrated compositional effects, notably Grant,1-6 Epremian,t Guy,8 and Harder and Gow.9 Sykes10 eviewed the work on the wrought alloy Rex 78 and the systematic variations of carbon, copper, molybdenum, and cobalt leading to the development of the stronger Rex 337A alloy. From the papers by Wilson11 and Henry12 it is possible to deduce the beneficial effect of substituting cobalt for iron in 0.45 pct C-20 pct Cr-20 pct Ni-4 pct Mo-4 pct W- 4 pct Cb alloys. Wilson mentioned but did not present the extensive compositional studies involved in developing these alloys. Then, as a steel is taken from the fire, the grain condition is as shown in Fig. I. After the forging operation has been performed the condition shown by Fig. 2 exists. The heating operation to harden the cutting edge produces the effect shown in Fig. 3. The questions that naturally arise are: Will the cost of the extra heat treatment necessary to change this condition (annealing) be more than the saving that may be effected in the drill steel or will the extra heating be an economical as well as a wise thing to do? Is this condition necessarily detrimental to the maximum service of the drill steel? Can this annealing action be obtained in the hardening heat by heating more of the bit, say at least 5 in., to the hardening temperature but quenching only the end of the bit by a shallow immersion? Short Rock-drill Steels Reclaimed by Welding By W. T. Ober, Lynn, Mass. Experimental tests by the Thompson Company have shown that short lengths of rock-drill steels may be reclaimed by electric butt welding. The drills used in the experiments were hollow drills l1/4-in. in diametcr containing 0.95 per cent. to 1.05 per cent. carbon. The ends to be joined must first be ground off fairly square and the greater part of the rust, scale, etc. removed for 3 or 4 in. back in order to insure good electrical contact with the dies of the welder and countersunk, with an 80° countersink, approximately 1/4 in. The steels are then clamped in the copper dies of the welder, so that a length projects from the inside edge of each pair of dies equivalent to from one-half to three-quarters the diameter of the drill. The drills should also be brought into accurate alignment. The first step is to bring the ends into close proximity and then close the primary circuit of the transformer, slowly bringing the steels together until their ends lightly touch, when they will "flash," that is, minute

SEVERAL investigators have recently contributed to a clarification of the controversy concerning the allotropy of chromium. Ross and Hume-Rothery1 and Vasyutinskii et a1.2 have reported high-temperature X-ray data on unalloyed chromium from which they have concluded that no allotropic transformation occurs in this metal. Bechtoldt and vacher3 in their investigation of the Cr-Ni alloy system found no evidence for a transformation in chromium and Smart and Haynes4 in critically analyzing the data presented to date concerning this system could find no evidence for a eutectoid reaction in this system. PALEOLITHIC MAN, laboriously shaping a stone implement in his cave, discovered that the dust irritated his eyes and nostrils and hindered his labors, whereupon, muttering a few incantations, forerunners of modern profanity, he removed himself and his work outside. There, ignoring the jeers of the hairy ?old-timers,? he turned his back to the wind and resumed operations in comparative comfort. Thus originated the dust problem in the mineral industries, and its solution. Despite long familiarity with the annoyance, danger, and loss occasioned by dust, little progress was made in the engineering solution of its problems until recent years. Some advance can now be reported but too many traces of ancient tradition and practice still remain. Considerable published information is available but only a part of this is of proved accuracy and utility. The greater portion is either misleading, being derived from too few cases to be of general application, or entirely erroneous, originating in guesswork, legend, or individual inspiration, divine or otherwise. The engineer, confronted with a dust problem, has neither the time nor the special training required to extract the values from this mass of low-grade. It is, therefore, desirable that we attempt to correlate the known values and to put them into a form upon which actual progress can be based. This discussion is, then, for the benefit of that engineer, particularly the engineer in the mineral industries and more particularly in ore-dressing plants, and is merely a gathering of facts already known but difficult to segregate.

EXISTING distribution data' for silicon between liquid iron and silver at steelmaking temperatures, 1500" to 1600°C, has made activity relationships in liquid silver-silicon alloys desirable as a method of determining the silicon activity in molten iron. To this end, through the use of radioactive Ag110 and the molecular beam technique described in a previous paper,' the vapor pressure of silver as a function of temperature has been measured over three silver-silicon alloys containing 3.9, 9.3, and 15.4 atomic pct (eutectic composition) silicon. Much has been said and written recently about the manpower problem in the mining industry. The coal segment of the industry has been scrambling to staff and man its companies and operations in order to accommodate the current boom, and there are some interesting side- lights and developments which deserve further attention from coal mining people. This column will deal with the manpower problem in general and the plight of the professional-the mining engineer-in particular. At this point in the game, it is desirable and perhaps necessary to ask ourselves if there really is a manpower problem and, if so, how serious it is. Suprisingly, there are varying and conflicting answers to this question. If we are talking about warm bodies, then in most mining areas there is no problem. If, however, we are talking about skilled or trained people-at all levels-there are apparently serious shortages, especially in the coal industry and in the U. S. Bureau of Mines. To define quantitatively the present and future need for mining professionals is a formidable task, to say the least. Without pretending that these figures are anything but an educated guess, we feel there is an immediate need for about 1000 mining engineers right now and a continuing need for about 300 mining school graduates per year (double last year's number) for the next ten years in order to take up the slack, provide for attrition and maintain a normal growth rate. Mining companies, large and small, are just now beginning to realize that the industry is undergoing a revolution, It is no longer possible to design, build and operate coal mines by the "seat of the pants." Production demands, the new health and safety law and the inevitable new legislation on surface mining will require more engineering, more planning and new technology. There are mine operators who need mining engineers and don't even know that they need them. This could mean rough going for the small operator. It surely means that there will be a trend toward increasing the ratio of technical to nontechnical employees and the ratio of technical employees to dollars of capital towards levels comparable with other highly mechanized industries.

Position of the Porphyries in US Copper Supply The United States continues to be the largest producer and consumer of copper in the world. [Table 1] shows several production statistics for 1974, the most recent year that the non-communist world copper industry might consider a good year, and for 1976 and 1977. In 1974 an estimated 24% of the non-communist world's newly mined copper was mined in the US, and 87.89% of that was from the western porphyry coppers. In 1976 US new mine production was down to 22% of the non-communist world's newly mined copper, and the percentage of US new mine production supplied by the porphyry coppers had risen to 89-91%. In 1977 the statistics remained the same as in 1976. US porphyry copper production represented about 65% of US refined copper consumption in 1974, rose to 75% in 1976, and dropped back to 61% in 1977 as imports of foreign copper into the US began to swell. The financial situation of the porphyry copper mining industry continues to be very unhealthy. To see why; we can take a quick look at costs and prices.

The design and performance of many operations common to the petroleum industry depend upon the unique properties of a class of materials known as non-Newtonian fluids. The art of measuring and describing these properties, called rheology, has fallen far behind the field applica-tion of these fluids in this industry. Empirical methods are still employed although theoretically sound methods of analysis are now available. This paper illustrates a completely general method of analysis of the rheological properties of non-Newtonian fluids which id independent of the type of viscometer employed and also the rheological type of fluid encountered except those of a thixo-tropic or rheopectic nature. Values of the rheological properties of a fluid obtained using this method of analysis are based upon an absolute scale of measurement, eliminating the necessity of employ-jng arbitrary concepts of the flow properties of non-Newtonian fluids, The fundamental nature of this method of analysis is further demonstrated by evaluating the precision with which measurements have been made of these rheological properties by employing a dimensionless criteric: —the Fanning friction factor-Reynolds number correlation. INTRODUCTION Non-Newtonian fluids are not new in the petroleum industry. Particular properties of non-Newtonian materials have been recognized and used to advantage in drilling fluids and have found excellent application in the hydraulic fracturing process.'.' While usage of these fluids is not new in this industry, the art of measuring and describing their rheological properties is still in its infancy. This is reflected in the accepted method of evaluating drilling fluids, API RP 29, (1950), which recommends a one point "viscosity" measurement. These shortcomings are recognized by various groups in the industry and more adequate methods have been prposed.3,4 The efforts Of these people are to be commended; but, at the same time, the limitations of their method of analysis and viscometer must be appreciated. This method Of analysis is applicable Only to Bingham plastic fluids as is pointed out early in their articles. The consistency of a Bingham plastic fluid must also lie within the range of the viscometer which is also well defined by the author. It is believed that the apparent simplicity of this method of analysis and the utility Of Operation Of their viscometer will soon make the terms non-Newtonian fluid and Bingham plastic fluid synonymous as used in this industry; a tendency which has already been encountered. Application of this method of analysis to a non-Newtonian fluid other than a Bingham plastic can lead to erroneous results. The field of rheology has long been hampered by the adherence to arbitrary concepts of Of of the flow properties Of non-Newtonian fluids. WEIGEL 20] Introduction-Grouting in Mines By definition the word "grout" means a thin mortar, or a kind of plaster or cement, and "grouting" means to fill up or finish with grout. The words "cement," "plaster" and "mortar" mean a substance that is used in a soft state which subsequently hardens. Thus, grouting is the filling of void space with a substance that hardens. Construction cements are the most common substances used, either by themselves or in mixtures, but the term grouting is applied quite correctly when other substances such as plastics and certain chemicals are used. Also, the use of the term grouting to cover the filling of voids with materials that do not actually become hard, such as the flotation tailings used in grouting in the southeast Missouri lead district, should be considered correct, as some stiffening does take place and, anyway, it is a better descriptive term than any substitute. Engineers are interested in grouting because some of the materials with which they must work contain voids, and certain conditions can be improved if these voids can be filled with something solid and permanent. Grouting is done to accomplish several purposes: I. To stop the passage of fluids and gases, 2. To cement materials together to make them stronger, and 3. To prevent consolidation of materials by filling void space with something solid as a replacement for the air and water that could be forced out under load. The construction industry uses grouting extensively for all three purposes. Grouting is used to stop water percolation under and around dams. It is used to control water flow in tunnel driving and in shaft sinking. It is used to improve foundation conditions under civil engineering structures by permanently filling void space and thereby reducing settlement, or by cementing broken rock together and increasing its supporting strength. The oil and gas industry does a lot of grouting, primarily to stop the passage of gases and fluids. The search for oil at increasingly greater depths has meant greater investment per well, and the oil industry has spent large sums on development of improved drilling methods. This

A study of the rate of dissolution of molybdenite (MoS2) in alkaline solution was carried out under carefully controlled conditions. Effects of temperature, oxygen over-pressure, and KOH concentration were evaluated. Studies were made in the temperature range 100°C to 175°C and in the pressure range 0 to 700 psia of oxygen. Under these conditions molybdenite was found to leach according to a linear mechanism. Both oxygen over-pressure and KOH concentration were found to control the rate of leaching. The mechanism has been explained in terms of adsorption of oxygen at the molybdenite surface followed by configurational rearrangement of the adsorbed molecules. The hydroxyl ion dependency is believed to be diffusion-controlled. Laboratory batch studies have shown that molybdenite can be readily dissolved in alkaline solutions under moderate conditions of temperature and pressure. Commercial application of this process to the production of ferro-molybdenum and molybdenum chemicals is promising in view of the ease of dissolution of molybdenite and the relatively noncorrosive conditions involved in the process. HIGH temperature-high pressure techniques have long been used to great advantage in the organic chemical industry, the petroleum industry, and the paper industry. Only recently, however, have these methods been used to extract metals from their ores on a commercial scale. The Chemical Construction Corp., together with interested producers of nickel and cobalt, has done much to develop methods of producing nickel and cobalt powders by the use of high temperature-high pressure techniques.' The Howe Sound Co. is currently operating a plant near Salt Lake City in which the new Chemical Construction Corp. technique is applied to cobalt-arsenic sulfide concentrates. In this method the concentrates are leached in a dilute solution of sulfuric acid under air pressure at a high temperature. Near Edmonton, in Alberta, Canada, the Sherritt Gordon Co. is also using the new method in conjunction with its ammoniacal leach process.' National Lead Co., at Fredricktown, Mo., is operating a process similar to that of Howe Sound. In spite of the rapid growth of high temperature-high pressure hydrometallurgical processes, there has been very little work done on fundamental principles involved in this type of process. Conse- quently the literature lacks any significant data in this field. Oxidation of pyrite,3 phalerite,4 galena,5 and recently molybdenite" in alkaline solutions has been reported to some extent. This investigation was initiated, therefore, to broaden the application of high temperature-high pressure hydrometallurgy and also to contribute some insight into the basic mechanisms of oxidation in an aqueous medium under these conditions. In addition to the immediate consequences of these processes much valuable information remains to be learned about fundamental reactions when they are carried out at temperatures and pressures slightly higher than those normally encountered. Leaching of molybdenite by alkaline solutions under oxygen pressure has recently been reported in the Russian literature by E. S. Usataya,8 who found that leaching rate increased with an increase in the pH of the solution—the strongest effects being observed at a pH of 10—and also with an increase in temperature. Usataya also has reported the formation of a protective film on the surface of the molybdenite when the leaching solution was weakly alkaline, neutral, or acidic. He believes that this oxidation process explains the migration of Mo+ + in the oxidation zones of molybdenite ore deposits and the subsequent impoverishment of the ores. Equipment: The high temperature-high pressure reaction unit used in this work was especially designed for kinetic studies of this nature, emphasis being placed on accuracy of measurement and precision of control. As details of the unit's construction and operation have been discussed elsewhere,7 Only basic features and principles of operation will be discussed at this point.
