The primary use of a portable crusher, i.e., a crusher mounted on crawlers or tires, in the rock and mining industries is to reduce costs by permitting the substitution of conveyor belt haulage for truck or track haulage. The usual sequence of operations in surface mining is drilling, blasting, loading, haulage, and crushing. Haulage is normally accomplished by truck or track-mounted cars, the latter method being used for the longer distances. However, by using a portable crusher in the pit, the sequence of operations would be changed so that the crushing stage would occur before haulage (Fig. 1). Such a sequence would permit the use of conveyors to replace the more expensive truck or track haulage methods. Since most quarry and open pit operations normally require a crushing stage, the only additional costs incurred will be due to the investment required to purchase or construct a mobile arrangement for a crusher. But this factor has to be weighed against the advantages to be gained by conveyor haulage. As shown in Fig. 2, transportation of material by belt conveyor over short distances is less ex- pensive than by truck. The inclination of the belt has no effect on belt speed; consequently, the hourly tonnage moved remains the same. Conversely, the output rate of trucks as expressed in tons or ton- miles per shift decreases proportionally to the haulage speed, which is considerably slowed by the steepness of the road (Fig. 3a). Although maximum possible grades and maximum economic grades of haulage are greater for a belt than for a truck (over the same total lift), the longer haulage distances favor the use of trucks.

A ridge of mountains runs the entire length with a maximum elevation of 2500 feet. Climate Latouche has to contend with possibly the greatest amount of precipitation on the North American continent. The annual average precipitation for the past 4 years has been 188 in., with 248 in. for the year 1926. A rainfall of 4 in. per day is not uncommon. In the winter the thermometer rarely falls below +20° F. and the snowfall is usually heavy during the months of March and April.

The rate of motion of the boundary between a single-phase a-iron region and a two phase a-iron plus ?-iron, or a-iron plus cementite region has been measured on decarburization at several temperatures between 500" and 865°C. These data, together with data for the carbon content of a-iron at the boundary, yield the diffusivity of carbon in a-iron. The activation energy for carbon diffusion is 19.8 kcal per mole for the temperature range —50° to 150°C and increases to an average value of 23.0 kcaL per mole for the temperature range 727" to 865°C. AS part of an investigation of the diffusivity of carbon in iron using a steady-state method,' the diffusivity of carbon in a-iron was determined at the temperatures 802" and 851°C. The diffusion constant thus obtained was larger, by nearly a factor of two, than that predicted from the combined results of stanley2 and of Wert.3 It seemed desirable, therefore, to continue the investigation. Since the temperature range in which the steady-state method can be conveniently used is limited, we have chosen a decarburization method, based on the laws of diffusion in metal accompanied by a phase change.4,5 If the initial carbon content of the Fe-C alloy is such that two phases coexist at the decar-burizing temperature* and decarburization is car- ried out such that the surface is maintained at substantially zero wt pct. C, the carbon distribution after a time, t, will be as shown in Fig. 1. The Purpose of this paper is to present an overview of research underway at the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory to investigate some of the more attractive options for controlling trace element contamination of coal refuse drainages. * The control methods under consideration include chemical and physical methods to immobilize or remove undesirable contaminants prior to refuse disposal, the treatment of refuse disposal sites with attenuating agents to prevent the discharge of contaminated water, and the direct treatment of refuse drainage as it emerges from the refuse disposal site. The results from these laboratory studies suggest that many of these techniques are technically feasible for controlling trace element contamination of refuse dump drainage.

ONE of the most useful, and at the same time least commonly used, methods of thermal analysis for the determination of transformations in metals and alloys consists in the recording of the tune intervals required for successive increments of temperature change during heating or cooling, the temperature of the furnace containing the specimen being altered at a uniform rate. The curve obtained by plotting these time intervals as a function of the mean temperature of the specimen during the interval is called the inverse-rate curve. It is probably due to the fact that no simple and convenient method has apparently been available for the measurement of the successive time intervals that this method has not been so generally used as, for example, the differential method, for which several tykes of automatic or semi-automatic apparatus have been designed. Whenever this method has been used, the intervals have usually been measured with the use of a chronograph; its operation as practised at the Bureau of Standards' is as follows: The temperature of the specimen is measured by a thermocouple and a dial potentiometer. The operator sets the potentiometer at successive values of the electromotive force differing by equal increments, usually 0.02 millivolt, and records the exact instant on the chronograph, by pressing a contact key, at which the galvanometer coil passes through its null position. Two-second intervals are also recorded on the chronograph record, and the number of 'seconds elapsing between successive signals is afterward counted from the record and plotted as a function of the electromotive force or of the temperature. This is an admirable method and by it most minute thermal arrests may be detected, but it requires a good chronograph, which is generally difficult to obtain, and the time of one operator during the recording and, subsequently, to read the intervals from the record; the latter operation often takes from one to two hours.

The importance of understanding the phenomena associated with rock fracture has long been fully appreciated in rock mechanics. This is clearly apparent from the special attention paid to rock fracture in the comprehensive papers published within the past four years.l-5 These papers present a picture of how the knowledge of brittle fracture of rock was gradually enriched and also show that what was often taken for granted three or four years ago is no longer considered as valid today. The Griffith hypothesis,6 thought in the past to predict the strength of rock, is now known to be applicable to fracture initiation only. The knowledge of a failure criterion for fracture initiation is not sufficient, however, as after fracture initiation the rock is still a useful material even possessing increasing load-bearing ability. The importance of the fracture propagation process, subsequent to fracture initiation, is thus obvious. Yet, relatively little attention has so far been paid to brittle fracture propagation in rock. As it is now realized that understanding of this process is a prerequisite for practical rock mechanics applications, studies of propagation of brittle fracture in rock constitute an important aspect of rock mechanics research. It has been pointed out 4 that it is essential that the failure mechanism is fully understood before a failure criterion is postulated. Many failure criteria have been propounded in the past on the basis of theoretical reasoning alone and could not be verified by experimental evidence. Recently, a hypothesis for the mechanism of brittle fracture of rock was propounded, 4 describing the events taking place in the rock from the initial application of gradually increased load to complete disintegration of the material.

INTRODUCTION In 1970 the percentage of underground coal extraction by longwall mining methods in the U.S. was 2.1 percent. This figure rose to 4.4 percent in 1976 and is expected to rise to 12 percent by the year 1985. This figure represents 46.0 million tons (51.0 million st) of annual production (Kuti, 1978). In addition, OSM regulations are placing emphasis on subsidence prediction. Section 784.20 of the Office of Surface Mining regulations for underground mining permit applications requires the sutauission of a subsidence control plan which may include monitoring. Because of its nature, longwall mining does not have flexibility in leaving pillars under structures as does room and pillar. Mining in some areas, particularly in the Eastern Coal Field, is approaching more developed areas; therefore, a greater number of structures are expected to be undermined in the near future. Subsidence engineering is becoming an important aspect of mine planning, and should be directed at predicting potential structural damage. The question operators are increasingly faced with is "what will be the subsidence effects for a specific structure at a specific location in respect to a longwall panel?" The most significant variable in assessing the subsidence effect on structures is not vertical subsidence. The variables of strain and tilt are responsible for more structural damage than is the vertical movement. Table I presents threshold values of strain for various structures (Geddes 6 Cooper, 1962). Based on National Coal Board experience, horizontal strain is approximately inversely proportional to the radius of curvature of a circular portion of a subsidence profile; therefore, the radius may be useful in estimating the magnitude of strain caused by subsidence (Hoebs, 1982). Blasting practices have shown a recent trend toward larger blastholes and larger burdens and spacings, although some operators, after reconsidering the situation have gone back to smaller blasthole sizes. The greater pull-down capabilities of larger drill rigs and the greater bearing strength of large diameter drill bits give penetration rates for large diameter blastholes approaching, and sometimes exceeding, penetration rates for smaller holes. In practically all cases, large diameter holes can be drilled more quickly and cheaply, based on volume of hole, than small diameter holes. The industry's shift to dry blasting agents and slurries, products which perform more dependably and efficiently in larger diameters, gives an additional advantage to larger boreholes.

ProbDly there has never been a year during which the petroleum industry expended so much effort as in 1929 in an attempt to rectify its ills. Eventually good will undoubtedly result, but as yet there have been no marked changes from the unhappy conditions familiar to all. Throughout the year remedies were sought that would cure the long-existing troubles of overproduction and waste. Proration of production and voluntary curtailment of output, for a short time considered the means for stability, not only failed but contributed to further waste and created a false sense of security. It encouraged a high rate of field development, weakened the economic structure by excessive development of newly discovered reserves and absorbed large sums of capital yielding meager or negative return. The manufacturing of gasoline by refiners without regard for market requirements furthered the unsatisfactory condition by falsely stimulating the demand for crude and placed on the market an oversupply of finished products, particularly gasoline. The marketing section of the industry has made progress by its adoption of the Code of Ethics as promulgated by the Federal Trade Commission and by the formation of an Export Association. The year 1929 opened not only with a current supply of oil exceeding demand but with an additional daily shut-in and potential supply variously estimated at from 3,000,000 to 5,000,000 bbl. This situation stimulated the industry, through the American Petroleum Institute, to attempt to work out an economically sound solution which would further conservation by bringing supply and demand into closer balance. Production Control After a thorough study of producing conditions, the committee of the American Petroleum Institute had for its recommendation that the production of crude oil in 1929 be held in check to an amount equal to that produced during the year 1928. The Federal Oil Conservation Board heard the appeal of the American Petroleum Institute and referred the matter to the Department of Justice. IN RECENT years there has been a decided trend toward bringing ores and coal out of open-pit and underground mines by long, sloping single-stage belt conveyors. Because the high investment cost of haulage conveyors dictates maximum speed and full loading for economy, conveyor belts are running faster than ever before, with a greater burden on the belts. In addition, larger blocks of ore are being mined and conveyed. Rougher use of large mining equipment generates more tramp iron; mechanical loading rejects nothing. Therefore the extraction of tramp iron and other deleterious materials for the protection of haulage conveyors at transfer points, chutes, and idlers is becoming an increasingly difficult job. In our experience, the best method of protecting long haulage conveyor belts is to extract the tramp iron, at least the large tramp iron, ahead of the main haulage conveyor or series of conveyors. It is most practical to collect the tramp iron at the earliest source -possible, usually directly after the primary car unloading dump or after the primary crushers, which are ordinarily not affected by tramp iron, see Fig. 1. The coal or ore from its primary source is fed by chutes or feeders onto a buffer or shock belt conveyor, a short, ruggedly built conveyor system that can be considered somewhat expendable. Its primary function is to bring the ore up to speed for transmission to the haulage conveyor. There is no assured method of protecting this conveyor from tramp iron damage at its feed end. Likewise, there is a possibility, although remote if the magnet applied to this belt is installed correctly, that the tramp iron extraction process will damage the shock belt, which is, however, short and comparatively inexpensive. Magnetic head pulleys with their maximum effective range of about 8 or 10. in. cannot be considered for large installations, even though they are desirable because of the continuous and, automatic tramp, iron removal feature. Further, the most dangerous form of tramp iron with respect to potential damage to a haulage conveyor is the long rod, roof bolt, or rail segment, which is not extracted satisfactorily because of the limited tangential contact of such an iron shape with the magnet. Magnetic head pulleys are also undesirable because the dribble or fines from the head pulley discharge at the same point as the tramp iron. Screens must be used to separate the fines from the magnetics, resulting in additional expense and loss of head room. Magnetic detectors have been used with success, but they only indicate the, presence of iron, and the conveyor belt must be stopped for its manual removal. The, stoppage of any conveyor means that all preceding equipment must be stopped or a cascade of material on the idle conveyor will result. Occasionally combinations of detectors and magnetic, head pulleys are used. The detector precedes the magnetic head pulley and detects only large pieces of tramp iron, while the magnetic pulley subsequently takes out the smaller ferrous metals. Suspended magnets overcome the disadvantages of magnetic head pulleys, detectors or a combination of both. The rate of reaction of cuprite was measured in a series of sulphuric acid solutions, from which oxygen had been excluded, at various concentrations and temperatures. The overall reaction CuzO + H2S04 + Cu " + CuO + H20 + So4' may be explained quantitatively by two simultaneous rate reactions involving not only H+ but also the hydrolytic adsorption of H2SO4. The results indicate the importance of considering surface mass balance relationships associated with heterogeneous surface reactions. T EACHING has long been an important method for the recovery of metals from certain minerals. Many processes have assumed minor importance in modern practice but such operations as the recovery of uranium and present interest in high pressure-high temperature solution of sulphides' ' well illustrate the importance of leaching as a unit operation. Little quantitative information is available in a form sufficient to determine the mechanism of solution at the solid-aqueous solution interface for given systems. For this reason, it is important that fundamental studies of leaching processes be conducted so that parameters associated with such surface reactions may be understood and correlated. Cuprite was chosen for this study as a result of a recent investigation carried out at the University of Utah on ores of the Ray and Chino Mines Divs. of the Kennecott Copper Corp. These sulphide deposits contain sufficient oxidized minerals, such as cuprite, malachite, and azurite, so that recovery of metal values contained in the oxidized fraction is of primary interest. THE manufacture of optical glass is a new industry in this country. In 1914, after the war started, the supply of optical glass from Europe was cut off, but as there was a fairly large stock of glass on hand, it was not until the end of 1915 that the optical instrument makers made serious efforts to produce their own glass. These early attempts were generally made by practical glass men and, due primarily to the fact that very little scientific help was used, the first attempts were unsuccessful. It was not until the whole problem was attacked by technically trained men who used advanced methods of research that good results were obtained. These researches proved that the accurate control of the temperature was a most important factor in the manufacture of optical glass. The early glass maker judged temperatures with his eyes; later, Seger cones were introduced into the furnace at various stages of the melt. Then radiation, indicating and recording pyrometers with rare-metal thermocouples were introduced. Now, in addition to these, an optical pyrometer every hour or so is sighted right into the pot and on the molten glass. Figs. 1 and 2 show how pyrometers are used to control the melt. InFig. 2, Y is the clay pot in which the batch is melted to glass within the furnace X. The rare-metal thermocouple S, protected by a clay tube, extends through the wall and about 4 in. into the furnace. This couple is connected to an indicator T and a recorder U so that a complete record of the furnace temperatures is obtained. The section of the curve ABCD, Fig. 1, shows how gradually and carefully the clay pot must be heated to get rid of moisture AB and during the calcining at CD. The stem of an expansion pyrometer R is extended through a hole in the door Z of the furnace and into the pot in order to more closely follow the temperatures of the clay pot itself during the burning process, that is from A to D. After the pot is calcined, the temperature can be rapidly raised to E (about 1430° C.); from E to F this temperature is much higher

The rapid improvement of the airborne scintillometer and the perfection of its efficiency for counting low energy gamma radiation has made it possible to work out a technique to map in great detail the radiation pattern at the earth's surface. On such maps low radiation over certain areas appears to indicate the existence of oil accumulations, forming a pattern similar to that obtained by the geochemists.

There are three main oil areas in Bolivia (Fig. 1) although so far only one has yielded petroleum in commercial quantities. The Sub-Andean zone is along the easternmost ranges of the Andes, bordering the large eastern and northeastern lowlands. It extends from the Peruvian frontier, north of Lake Titicaca in a southeasterly direction towards the city of Santa Cruz and from there southward to the Argentine border. This zone forms a belt about 1200 km. long by 100 km. wide, and comprises a series of parallel, very rugged, low ranges. Oil has been known and utilized by the natives in these regions since colonial times, from the large number of seepages, which in modern times have led to the discovery of many fields. The second oil zone of Bolivia lies along the eastern and southern borders of Lake Titicaca, on the Andean high plateau, at an average altitude of 13,000 ft. above sea level. It comprises an area of approximately one million hectares (2,470,000 acres). Several seepages are known here, but little development has taken place, because of the difficulties encountered, as the greater part of the territory is covered by volcanic tuffs and ashes, which conceal the structure underneath. The third area is called the "Central zone," and is in the heart of the country, in the Department of Cochabamba, covering approximately five million hectares (12,350,000 acres). This area consists mainly of broad valleys flanked by low rolling ranges. Natural seepages are not known to exist, but there are secondary evidences of the presence of oil. The outcropping rocks are mainly Paleozoic (Silurian and Devonian sandstones and shales). Albertite and other forms of polymerized petroleum have been found in this region. Of these three main oil areas, only the first one is at present productive on a small commercial scale. This zone, developed almost exclusively by the Standard Oil Co. of Bolivia, a subsidiary of the Standard Oil Co. of New Jersey, is divided from south to north into the following local fields: 1. Occurrrences of South African uranium have been known qualitatively for over twenty years, but no account was taken of them because of their low grade. In 1945, known uranium deposits were few, but their grades were 20 to 100 times higher than South African ores. Viewed in this light, the exploitation of South Africa's uranium is revolutionary indeed. Development of various analytical procedures capable of dealing with the needs of the project accounted for one-half of the cost and included: a) simple and automatic radiometric analytical procedures, b) sampling procedures appropriate to prevent sample contamination, c) procedures for sample and record-storing to accommodate many thousands of analyses per month, d) chemical methods giving high accuracy analyses for high grade samples not at radioactive equilibrium, and e) development of rapid procedures having moderate accuracy for low grade samples i.e., mill tailings and barren liquors. This task is continuing today with major improvements coming from time to time.

Horizontally stratified lithologies of certain open pit or strip mines create unique stability problems for mine operations. Such problems may result when specific lithologies, such as sandstone and shale, exist in final or long-term slopes. Slope instabilities may occur when a sandstone unit directly overlies a shale unit and ground water drains into the mine along the lithologic contact. In essence, the ground water erodes the underlying shales and undercuts the sandstone. Large sandstone blocks fail in a toppling mode and cause safety and cleanup problems. Use of rock reinforcement including chain link fencing, roof bolt mats, rock bolts, rock anchors, and shotcrete offers a possible solution to the problem.

GROSSMANN'S method1 for calculating the hardenability of steel from the composition and grain size has gained wide acceptance, and when properly used, has been well proved in practical application, both for estimating the hardenability of known compositions and for selecting compositions to meet known hardenability requirements. The Grossmann method uses as the criterion of hardenability the "ideal critical diameter," DI, which is the size round that will just harden to a structure of 50 per cent martensite at the center when given the theoretically fastest quench, or "ideal quench." The DI can be related to actual quenching practice if the severity of quench is known; or the DI can be correlated with hardenability as determined by the Jominy end-quench method.2 The effect on hardenability of each element present in a steel can be represented by a multiplying factor, the value of which depends on the amount of the element present and the degree of effectiveness of the particular element. (The value of the factor for a given carbon content varies with the grain size.) When the factors for all elements present in a steel have been determined from charts, they are multiplied, and the resultant product is the D, of the steel. The validity of Grossmann's scheme of multiplying factors has been confirmed in a number of other investigations.3 -6 It can be appreciated that a certain desired level of hardenability can be obtained by adding chromium, molybdenum, nickel and vanadium to a base composition containing carbon, manganese, silicon and the usual impurities. Many of the ranges of hardenability used commercially can be obtained by any of the foregoing alloying elements used singly in the base composition. The same hardenability levels also can be obtained through use of any of a great number of multiple element combinations of these alloying elements. In this report a method will be presented for determining what one combination is the most efficient (based on hardenability and cost of added alloy) for a given level of hardenability. It should not be assumed from the emphasis given to hardenability, that hardenability is the only criterion for the selection of an alloy composition. Such properties as the hot-working characteristics, machinability, carburizing characteristics, amount of distortion during quenching and the retention of austenite may be considerations of importance in many applications. However, hardenability is one of the most important properties of an alloy steel and one that must be considered in almost all cases involving heat-treatment by quenching. Therefore, a method for determining the lowest-cost alloy combination should be of considerable value.
