GROUND raw material as fed to the cement kiln generally is a mixture of two to four components, each of which may have widely varying physical and grindability characteristics. Chemically similar materials found in the same or different deposits may also differ appreciably in physical properties, depending on their crystalline structure. The calcareous or principal cement raw material may vary from a soft chalky limestone or friable cement rock at one plant to a hard limestone or oyster shell at another plant. Argillaceous materials include clays, shales and granulated slag. Siliceous and/or iron-bearing material, including sand, iron ore and cinders, may also be required in addition for certain types of mixes. Frequently differences in grindability characteristics are not given the attention they deserve in comparing grinding results at one plant with those at another or in selecting suitable circuits or equipment. Many types of crushing and grinding units are used, with numerous open and closed circuit arrangements. Both wet and dry processes are used successfully. When rebuilding or installing a new grinding department, the choice of process or circuit in some cases may be dictated by the nature of the materials being ground but in other cases it may be the result of good salesmanship or a compromise. An over-all evaluation of wet process vs. dry process grinding should not be made without considering the effects on all other producing departments in the plant. In general, the more recent grinding installations, both wet and dry, have employed closed circuits, but many older open circuits are still in successful operation. In our experience, closed-circuit raw grinding pays, because of lower power consumption and less operating labor per ton of product. However, some dry open-circuit mills with improved equipment and operating methods compare favorably in performance with dry closed-circuit units. CHARACTER OF GROUND RAW MIX (KILN FEED) Grinding in the cement plant in general requires a considerably finer product than in most ore-grinding operations. A distinction between fineness of kiln feed and of cement may be made in that kiln feed preferably should be ground to a limiting size, whereas finished cement should include a range of size fractions including sufficient fine flours to give a product with satisfactory physical qualities. Grinding raw mix for kiln feed therefore is more comparable to ore grinding, although the limiting size is smaller. Most kiln feeds are ground from 85 to 95 per cent passing 200-mesh, depending on mix composition. Some cement chemists believe that raw materials cannot be too fine, since finer particles theoretically combine more readily and intimately in the kiln. However, there are certain definite practical objections to extremely fine kiln feed, such as loss of kiln dust, unstable material flow through the kiln and greater difficulty in control of chemical composition due to dust loss, and the disproportion of fines from the more easily ground component. Discussion of the paper of Max Boehmer, presented at the Pittsburg meeting, March, 1910, and printed in Bulletin. No. 38, February, 1910, pp. 119 to 122. W. MORTON WEBB, Germiston, Transvaal, South Africa (communication to the Secretary*):-The experience of Mr. Boehmer in the Leadville district and his reputation as an engineer assure the interest of anything he may write on the ore-bodies of that district; and all engineers who have operated in Leadville will agree that the theory of the origin of the Leadville deposits, as given by Mr. Emmons in his famous monograph, does not adequately explain the genesis of all the deposits. The solution of the problem does not, however, appear to be quite so simple as Mr. Boehmer would make it; and the advance pamphlet issued by the U. S. Geological Survey, pending the completion of the main report, shows that there is still much ground for controversy. No doubt the later eruptives had a greater influence on the deposition of the ore-bodies than was thought at the time of the first investigation by the Survey; but it has always appeared to me that the influence exerted by these dikes was more in the nature of a physical than a chemical one. The weight of evidence in recent years is mostly in the direction of ascension rather than lateral secretion; and one of the strongest evidences is the fact that most of the ore-bodies lie under one of the comparatively impervious layers which help to make up the structure of these hills. On Iron hill I have found a very persistent white porphyry sheet, split off from the overlying porphyry and lying from 30 to 60 ft. below the main white porphyry and blue limestone contact. This sheet varies from a few to 50 ft. in thickness, and where found adds another "contact" to that region ; some of the largest ore-bodies on Iron hill lie immediately under this sheet. During the post-war period, and particularly during the past few years, coal production has been maintained at a reasonably constant level. This is in contrast to the greatly expanded demand for oil and natural gas. Certain markets for coal, such as the railroad and for home heating, have tended to decrease, but this decline has been offset by an increase in demand for other uses, particularly for electric power. Since the United States has very large reserves of coal and relatively limited reserves of natural gas and oil, from the conservation viewpoint, it would be better if the increased demand were to fall more heavily on coal. Where coal has lost certain markets, the decision has not always been made on the basis of price, and, in fact, in many instances, the markets have been lost where coal could show a price advantage. There are various reasons for this situation but it can be attributed in the main to the preference of certain consumers for the convenience offered by liquid and gaseous fuels. In the production of chemicals such as benzene, phenol, or ammonia, coal still plays an important role. As co-products from coke-oven operations, a wide variety of aromatic chemicals are available. In recent years, however, the production has not been sufficient to supply the demand, and it is not profitable to build coke ovens to make chemicals unless there is a market for the coke as well. As a result, the petroleum industry is beginning to take a stronger part in the production of aromatic chemicals. Natural gas has almost displaced the coke-oven water-gas machine for the production of hydrogen for the synthesis of ammonia, as well as for the synthesis of methyl alcohol and other oxygenated compounds. This information is not new and is given here only as a basis for the discussion of the broad significance of the development of the gasification process. It is clear that if coal is to regain some of its old fuel markets, as well as to maintain a position in the field of chemical synthesis, processes must be available for converting coal to the type of fuel the customer wants, and for a cheap method of furnishing gaseous raw material to the chemical industry. The operation of coke ovens and water-gas machines is not the answer to this problem for at least two important reasons: (1) the limited supply and relatively high price of good coking coals, and (2) the relatively high costs of the combined operations of coking and manufacture of water gas.

The work of J. E. Johnson, Jr., on the effect of small amounts of oxygen in cast iron in increasing its strength and resistance to shock, is of interest from the technical and scientific standpoints. The following exposition of the theory carries Mr. Johnson's explanation further and, in my opinion, will disclose certain related phenomena and perhaps shed further light on the subject. Some facts, so novel in character as to excite incredulity, have been accepted finally by many metallurgical authorities. One of these is that oxygen to the amount of 0.060 per cent. in cast iron gives it a breaking strength of 3,500 Ib. per square inch, compared with a breaking strength of 2,500 lb. per square inch in cast iron of the same composition with respect to elements other than oxygen, but having only 0.010 per cent, oxygen. The "oxygenated" cast iron, even if made in a coke furnace, has properties equivalent to the best charcoal pig iron. Mr. Johnson has also established the fact that the variations in combined carbon cannot account for the results. By microphotographic evidence he has shown that in oxygenated cast iron the graphite particles are dense and spherical, while in well-deoxidized cast iron the graphite particles are flaky and leaf-like. It is just a matter of common sense that iron of the latter structure is much weaker than the former. The analytical and microscopical work has been done with care and there is no doubt in my mind about the accuracy of the experimental results. In this paper then, we shall consider it as accepted that small amounts (0.060 per cent.) of oxygen increase the strength of cast iron by producing a structure in which the round and solid particles of graphite are surrounded firmly by a principal matrix of ferrite. The purpose of this paper is to show that the reason why the graphite particles are round is founded on the fact that the particles of any precipitate are made denser and harder by the presence of a reagent having a solvent action on the precipitate. This can be stated as a law, although I have never seen it so given in any textbook. Let us then, for purposes of illustration, give a concrete example and develop the theory of such mechanical and chemical actions as occur: It is well known that, by a soluble sulphate, a barium salt in solution is precipitated in a dense and easily filtered body when the solution is

The device here described has been found useful in sampling foundry-iron, and there is no reason why it should not be equally useful in sampling other metals, which are not too hard to be drilled with a breast-drill. It consists, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, of an ordinary plumber's gas T (without bead) of about 1/2-inch in internal diameter, over the leg of which is snugly fitted a small tin cup, about If inches deep, to catch the drillings which are made by use of a breast-drill with a 1/4-inch twist bit, working through the arms of the T. The forward arm of the T is filed down to a blunt edge, over which is stretched a short piece of rubber tubing projecting a little beyond the end. The bottom of the inside of the front arm of the ? is filed down to a slope, to facilitate the passage of drillings into the tin cup. The rear arm of the T is fitted with a tin ring, projecting about 1/4-inch, for the purpose of holding in place a stiff spiral brass spring, which serves to press the sampler firmly against the metal to be drilled. The other end of the spring is supported against a shoulder of the breastdrill. The projecting rubber prevents the loss of any drillings, and also the falling of sand from above into the sampler. With ordinary care there need be no risk of getting particles of rubber into the sample. It is, of course, not possible to get a fair average sample of drillings, representing a pile of foundry-iron, by taking drillings from any one or two pieces, because of the frequently mixed character of the iron. This observation applies more particularly to the sampling of iron as it is broken and piled at the foundry, than to sampling at the works, where, if the furnace is working regularly, a few pigs may fairly represent a whole cast. A ceramic product or processed material is a solid composed of materials which have been subjected to heat above 875°F. The raw materials, which are blended together (or in some cases used singly), are selected and utilized for various reasons such as ease of fabrication, aid to processing, to yield desired properties after processing, lack or controllable degree of toxicity or hazard, availability, cost, and perhaps other considerations. Almost all solid inorganic, some organic, and some liquid and gaseous materials have the potential to be used individually in some ceramic product. There are several fundamental functions to be fulfilled in every ceramic product and a number of secondary functions are desirable in specified products. These functions are generally met by the most widely occurring minerals and rocks of the earth and their debris. This fact characterizes ceramics as a field utilizing the raw materials most available to man. Of course, specified products utilize synthetics, organics, and rare inorganics to produce desired results. Any solid nonmetallic product processed by subjection to temperature above a red heat may be called a ceramic product. Widely used construction materials and units, domestic utensils and units, industrial parts to facilitate manufacture, technical components, and aesthetic creations are very often of a ceramic nature because of the durability, inertness, hardness, ease of fabrication, cost, and availability of the ingredients. Often, organics or metals cannot meet desired specifications for some of these products. The rocks and minerals and mineral debris of the earth are largely siliceous. Oxygen and silicon comprise roughly 75% of the earth's crust with aluminum, iron, calcium, and the alkalies following in abundance. Silica ( SiO, ) and silicates can be melted to form glasses. Alumina (A1,0,), present in a mineral com- pound, gives greater durability, hardness, and strength, but lessens the glass-forming property. Iron, calcium, and the other alkalies flux silica and reduce melting points. Thus, sand, which is generally almost pure SiO,, and clay, which is generally hydrated alumina silicate, are the most widely used of all ceramic raw materials-principally because of the glass-forming propensities of silicates. In ceramic formulations, clay is generally a refractory filler or skeletal material, having in the raw state a plasticity derived from its colloidal grain size and its water-loving nature. On the other hand, silica sand is a glass former or nonplastic filler. Clay and silica sand in pure forms are quite refractory, i.e., not easily melted. Clay, although siliceous, is less of a glass former than pure silica and is more refractory. Natural contaminants, such as iron oxide or limestone, adulterate many clays and some sands. These contaminants act as fluxes and reduce the fusion points of the mineral or blends. Glass is made from silica sand by fluxing the sand with strong bases, usually soda ash and limestone. Red building bricks are hard and durable because the sand and clay have been partially fused with help of natural iron oxide serving as a flux. The iron oxide per- forms a dual function, serving as a pigment as well as a flux. In a blend of clay and sand and iron oxide, the sand is more susceptible to fusion than is the clay. Although silica sand and clay are the most widely used raw materials in most ceramic products, many other minerals, and some non- minerals are utilized in products where these materials can produce or aid in achieving desired results. Recent developments in the application of solvent extraction in hydrometallurgical processing make it desirable to reassess the present state of availability of suitable equipment for these applications. The range of solvent extraction applications now includes very large scale applications with a modest demand on separation performance (the treatment of some base metals) and applications in which the decisive factor is a very high requirement on separation performance. The extraction column to be described in the present paper is of the type in which mechanical energy is provided for the two- liquid system inside the column. The active elements for this are reciprocating sieve plates designed and mounted so as to uniformly load the driving mechanism, to eliminate vibration of the plant, to have sufficient control over the degree of dispersion of the dispersed phase, and to reduce axial mixing effects, which are highly detrimental to the separation performance of production-scale plant. The operating features of the reciprocating-plate column will be illustrated mainly by experimental results obtained on a 4" diameter column in the extraction of uranyl nitrate with TBP. Some mechanical features of the operation of reciprocating-plate columns will also be discussed.

MINE hoisting ropes can be loaded to capacity only when the strength of each component is exactly known. Characteristic curves provide this information. When load and rate of acceleration are specified for an individual rope, the characteristic curve assumes a predetermined shape. The factor of safety, is the value drived by dividing the breaking strength of the rope by the total stress on the rope where it goes over the sheave wheel. Total stress is made up of the weight of skip and cage, weight of ore, weight of rope between sheave and rope clevise or attachment, friction load, and acceleration force. Bending stresses are neglected in this discussion, as sheaves and drum di- ameters are assumed to be large enough to reduce these stresses to a negligible value. Fig. 1 gives a family of characteristic curves for 13/8-in. improved plow steel hoisting ropes of 6 x 19 or 6x21 construction with hemp core. The curves will hold for all rope sizes of this specified quality when they are subjected to an acceleration rate of 1.608 ft per sec2. As acceleration rates of most deep shaft hoists are close to this value, this family of curves is presented as a standard. Deviation is slight for other rope sizes. Note that for 0, which is the most important, the deviation is within the width of the line on the graph. In a comparison of values for ropes of 5/8-in. and 21/4-in. diam the deviation ranges from a maximum 1.2 pct at 0 ft to 0.6 of 1 pct at 5000 ft. The value of 5.55 is the same for all ropes at 2500 ft. The tabulated columns to the left of the curves are values of total connected load for each size of rope from 5/8-in. to 21/4-in. diam inclusive. With each of these connected loads the safety factor characteristic curve for the rope will be as indicated.

The U-Cr system is of the simple eutectic type with some solid solubility of chromium in r and ß uranium. The eutectic occurs at 20 atomic pet Cr and melts at 859°C. The maximum solubility of chromium in y uranium is 4 atomic pet at the eutectic temperature, and in ß uranium the solubility is estimated to be 1 atomic pet. y-ß and ß-a transformations were found to occur at 737°estimatedt° and 612°C respectively. DURING 1944 and 1945, the U-Cr constitution diagram was studied in this laboratory as a part of a research program on uranium metallurgy in the Manhattan Project, and the work was described in a Manhattan Project report issued in December 1945. This paper is based on that report, which has been declassified. Prior to this study, it had been shown by other Manhattan Project workers that the low Cr-U alloys could be quenched to retain the form of uranium. Experimental The uranium used in this work was massive metal prepared in this laboratory and contained less than 0.1 pct of other elements. The chromium was 200 mesh powder obtained from the A. D. McKay Co. and was found on analysis to be 99.5 pct Cr with 0.3 pct Fe the major impurity. Alloys, weighing 400 to 600 g, were prepared by induction heating the components to 1700°C in slip-cast ZrO, crucibles in a vacuum of 3x103 mm Hg. TO prevent too violent agitation of the melt by the induction field with subsequent crucible breakage and sample loss, the ZrO2 crucible was placed in a graphite crucible, which was surrounded by a layer of powdered carbon insulation 2 to 3 cm thick. Polished vertical sections of the alloys were examined microscopically to confirm their homogeneity. Heating and cooling curves were taken on the alloys by reheating them in ZrO, crucibles to 1200°C and inserting a mullite-protected chromel-alumel thermocouple into the melt by means of a slip seal in the vacuum head of the furnace. A recording potentiometer traced the curves which had a slope of from 3" to 6" per min. Samples of the alloys were prepared for metallo-graphic examination by conventional mechanical polishing techniques followed by an electrolytic polish in an ethylene glycol-phosphoric acid-ethyl alcohol bath. The structure of the alloys was brought out clearly by this procedure so that no further etching was required. Samples for chemical analysis were taken from drillings from the top, center, and bottom sections of the alloys. The uranium was determined by titra-tion with Ce(SO1)2, while the chromium was titrated with FeSO,; the uranium and chromium totaled at least 99.6 pct in all of the alloys prepared. X-ray samples were prepared by filing bulk specimens in a helium-filled glove box and annealing the resulting powder in a zirconium-gettered helium atmosphere. A 114.6 mm diam Debye-Scherrer camera and a Weyland nonsymmetrical self-focusing camera were used with filtered copper radiation to obtain the powder X-ray diffraction data. Results The data obtained in this study have been combined to construct the constitution diagram of the U-Cr system shown in Fig. 1 where the arrests observed in cooling curves are indicated by dots. The liquidus arrest was quite distinct in thermal data taken on alloys in the range 0 to 20 atomic pct Cr. The eutectic arrest was not observed in studies on the 2.5 and 4.5 pct Cr samples but appeared in the 7.5 pct samples, which suggested some solubility of chromium in y uranium. On quenching from 859 °C, the 2.5 pct sample showed but one phase while the 4.5 pct sample contained a small amount of the eutectic along the grain boundaries; see Figs. 2 and 3. From this the maximum solubility of chromium in r uranium has been set at 4 pct. X-ray studies on these samples showed that the r phase was not retained at room temperature by quenching, but in each case a pattern was observed .which has been identified with the ß phase of uranium. Thermal data show the y-ß transformation of uranium lowered to 737°C as a consequence of this solubility. On quenching from the ß range (660°C), precipitation of chromium in the primary uranium is observed in the 2.5 and 4.5 pct Cr samples (see Figs. 4 and 5),

IT IS generally recognized that the natural gas absorbed in petroleum plays the leading r6le in moving the oil through the sands to the well and supplies the energy that delivers the oil to the surface when the wells are flowing. It is the purpose of this paper to note the amount of oil that could be lifted by this gas if 100 per cent. efficiency were obtained and the efficiencies actually obtained in the use of this gas. An article in MINING AND METALLURGY,' stated that in a Wyoming field, with a pressure of 300 lb. per sq. in., there would be absorbed 65 cu. ft. of gas per barrel, or 1.55 cu. ft. per gal. of oil. The writer does not know if data have been obtained, by experiment, for pressures beyond those indicated in this article, therefore, for the purpose of illustration, he has projected this curve to obtain figures for pressures greater than 300 lb., although probably experiment will show that the extended line is not quite correct.

The individuality of off-highway trucks is largely determined by a number of truck components that include beds, frames, and suspensions. With the exception of tires, these features are generally standard equipment and the mine operator gets "what comes with the truck." With the advent of larger trucks, more complicated haul profiles, and sophisticated production control systems, a new truck support-component industry is rapidly appearing. The impact of the new options for off-highway trucks can be significant in terms of future fleet performance. Innovations include "Mesabi" radiator cores that reportedly offer greater engine temperature control; load indicators that insure proper truck loading at the shovel; and digital communication systems that signal truck status in the haulage cycle. An understanding of tires, brakes, and newly introduced support components is necessary before an optimum choice of truck can be made

The Western World's gold reserves now exceed 23,000 mt (750 million oz), 65% of which exist in South Africa. Although several major mines are reducing production or closing because of depletion of reserves, new mines or expansions of existing mines are coming on-stream which will maintain an annual production of 684 mt (22 million oz) of gold well into the 1990s. These new operations by the South African mining industry represent the largest expansion since the opening of the Witwatersrand gold fields in 1886. Included in three new mines being opened is that of Anglo American Corporation's Elandsrand plant, their fir& new gold venture in South Africa in seventeen years. Current average grade of South African mines is 8.2 g Au per mt (0.24 oz per st); and while the cost of the Elandsrand 135,000 mt (149,000 st) operation, including mine development, was about $314 million, it is estimated that the cost of a comparable operation started today and completed in the mid-1980s would be of the order of $480 million. New mines to exploit low-grade ore bodies are, therefore, likely to be few in number, and further expansion will undoubtedly be in the form of extensions to existkg operations where cash flow can be used to finance development. The authors' first monograph, "Gold and Silver Cyanidation Plant Practice," devoted a section to South African cyanide plant operation; and it is believed that this new volume would not be complete without a description of Elandsrand, South Africa's newest gold plant. The Elandsrand mine is adjacent to Anglo American's Western Deep Levels on the Far West Rand. The decision to go ahead with the development was taken in mid-1974 from the results of exploration drilling carried out over a period of .lo years. Results of 17 bore holes and 68 intersections of the Ventersdorp Contact Reef had indicated a gold-.bearing reef less than one meter thick at a depth of 1,800 to 3,000 meters (5,900 to 9,840 ft). Preliminary studies indicated a mine of 900 km (560 miles) of underground workings would yield 725,000 kg (23. 3 million oz) of gold from 60 million mt (66 million st) of ore to be milled over a period of 34 years. Eventually, when the mine is in full production, the total hoisting capacity will be 300,000 mt per month (331,000 st) for a milling capacity of 225,000 mt per month (248,000 st). IN six years the construction of Hoover Dam and the power plants probably will have reached the operating stage and this vast new source of power will then be continuously available for industry. The height of the darn will be 580 ft. and the average annual flow of the Colorado River is calculated at approximately 24,000 cu.ft. per sec. If this full head and average flow can be maintained the year round, about one million horsepower will be generated. The U. S. Reclamation engineers, taking into consideration the probable range in flow and head, have set the figure for power contracts at 660,000 firm horsepower, which can be assured at all times of the year. During the months of heavy run-off of water from the Colorado River Basin the power plants should be able to generate the full 1,000,000 hp. capacity of the power plants, so there will be 340,000 excess or secondary horsepower. The cost of firm power at the switchboard will be close to 2.15 mills per kw.-hr., equal to $14.05 per hp.-yr., and the cost of the secondary or off-peak power will be close to 0.8 mills per kw.-hr., or $5.22 per hp.-yr. In no place in the country can such cheap power be obtained today. The electrochemical industry is in a state of flux because the power costs from its old sources have increased so much (to $30 per hp.-yr. at Niagara) that the industries have had to seek new sources, so they have gone to Canada and Norway and built new plants.

Single crystal, bicrystal, and polycrystal tensile tests of aluminum at 4.2°K, 77°K, and 300°K have been used to examine the role of grain boundaries in the deformation process. Results indicate that a grain boundary may affect the extent and slope of easy glide. The stage II hardening rate, on the other hand, is independent of the presence or absence of grain boundaries. This conclusion allows the size of the region of multiple slip caused by an incompatible grain boundary to be determined. For the size of bicyystal sample used in this study, multiple slip occurs in about half of the cross section. PREVIOUS studies of the stress-strain characteristics of bicrystals of face-centered-cubic metals have been limited to aluminuml-5 at room temperature. Recent results, however, indicate that the stress-strain curves of single crystals of such metals may be separated into at least three stages6 in which different deformation processes are occurring7 provided testing is done at sufficiently low temperatures.' Since for aluminum a well-defined stage II develops only below room temperature, previous studies have not been able to relate effects of grain boundaries to all of the three stages of deformation. It is therefore to be expected that low-temperature deformation of aluminum single crystals and bicrystals should clarify the effects of grain boundaries on the different processes of deformation. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Single crystals and bicrystals were grown from the melt by the standard techniqueg with aluminum reported by Alcoa to be 99.993 pct pure. Ridges in the boat were used to guide the grain boundary during growth, assuring that the boundary would bisect the sample.10 The rate of furnace motion during growth was 1.0 cm per hr. During growth zone purification resulted, as evidenced by the ability of the first material to freeze to recrystallize at room temperature following severe deformation. Samples were approximately 4.4 X 6.6 mm in cross section and 103.5 mm in length between grips. Samples were annealed at 635" i 5°C for 40 hr and furnace cooled over a 7-hr period. They were then electropolished in a solution of 5 parts methanol to 1 part perchloric acid at a current density of 15 amp per sq dm for about 30 min at temperatures below 0°C. Tensile testing was performed at 295" (room temperature), 77" (sample in liquid nitrogen), and 4.2"K (sample in liquid helium) on the hard-type machine indicated schematically in Fig. 1. The machine con- sists basically of a tube surrounding a rod; one end of the sample is attached to each member, and the rod is pulled up the tube to extend the sample. The rod is rigidly mounted and is moved vertically by a system described by asinski." The pulling force is measured continuously by an electrical strain gage load cell, and the relative displacement of the tube and rod is also recorded continuously by a soft cantilever beam with electrical strain gages. Maximum stress and strain sensitivities were ±2g per sq mm and * 3-10-5. In all tests the strain rate was approximately 5.10-5 per sec. The thin wires in the tensile apparatus introduce softness, which may be corrected for, however, by measuring load vs displacement with the sample replaced by an elastic member. For loads greater than 15 kg the spring constant is 1.875.106 g per cm. The flexible wires also served to reduce substantially the large shearing forces which may arise in the case of grips having horizontal rigidity.'' As in any gripping system, however, bending moments will arise in the course of deformation by single slip. Engineering stress, s = (load)/(original cross-sectional area), and strain, E = (increase in length)/ (original length), are used for stress-strain curves unless otherwise indicated. Tables list resolved shear stress, T=mo and shear strain ? = dm, where m is the usual Schmid resolved shear stress factor for the primary slip system at the start of deformation. The first group of samples to be described forms an isoaxial set, all of the crystals making up the single crystals or bicrystals having the same tensile axis, the orientation of which is indicated by the cross in Fig. 2. For this orientation the primary slip plane and slip direction make angles of 45 deg with the tensile axis and the Schmid factor m has its maximum possible value of 0.5. Rotations about the tensile axis are indexed by means of an angle 0 between the small-area surface of the samples and the projection of the primary slip direction onto the cross section, as defined in Fig. 3. In single crystals, values of 0 were 0 and 90 deg, while in bicrystals 0 values were (0 deg, 180 deg), (90 deg, 270 deg), and (0 deg, 90 deg) as indicated in Fig. 4.

The possibility of applying a neutron activation technique for silver exploration is considered. A mobile positive-ion accelerator type neutron source is used to irradiate a small area of rock or soil in situ. By using a short period of irradiation and gamma ray spectral analysis, a technique is shown for silver exploration. Two different mobile units are described. Laboratory and preliminary field tests both indicate that a sensitivity of less than 1 oz of silver per ton of ore can be achieved. The increasing consumption of silver for industrial uses and also for coinage has caused a serious shortage of silver in this country. The silver shortage has been reviewed and analyzed by kiilsgaard1 who concludes that, "The best hope for meeting future demands for silver is through accelerated exploration for precious ores." As almost all the exposed "bonanza" type silver deposits evidently have been found, it is urgent that some sensitive geophysical technique be found to detect large, extended, but generally low-grade, secondary ores, as well as hidden vein deposits. Silver is easily made radioactive by exposure to slow neutrons; hence a neutron activation method appears promising for locating silver deposits. The principles of mineral beneficiation using neutron activation techniques were discussed some years ago.2-4 Using the same approach, a preliminary description5 has been published of neutron activation as a mineral exploration tool. An exploration technique is described in which silver is made radioactive in situ and detected with a gamma radiation counter. The technique is similar to the well-known method used for uranium exploration. THEORETICAL CONSIDERATIONS Elemental silver consists of two isotopes, Ag107 and Ag109, having naturally occurring isotopic abundances of 51.4% and 48.6%, respectively. For short periods of irradiation of silver by thermal neutrons, the long-lived 250 day, half-life isotope, Ag110m, is not produced in significant quantities. However, significant quantities of 2.3 min half-life Ag108 and 24.5 sec half-life Agl10 are formed by the following reactions. Ag108 and Agl10 emit a 0.44 Mev (million electron volts) and a 0.66 Mev gamma ray, respectively. Ag107 + n + Ag108 (2.3 min) Ag109 + n + Ag110 (24.5 sec). Because of the large capture cross section (110 barns) of Ag109, and short half-life of Ag110 (24.5 sec), the 0.66-Mev gamma ray is the most prominent emission from silver for neutron activation periods of about a minute's duration.* The 0.44-Mev gamma ray from Ag108 will also be present, but will be one or two orders of magnitude lower in intensity. The decay scheme of Ag110 is shown in Fig. 1. If the neutron irradiation time is limited to about 100 sec, the Ag110 activity will essentially reach saturation and can be used to detect the presence of silver. In a neutron flux of 10 8 neutrons/cm2/set, the induced 0.66-Mev activity in 1 g of silver will be about 2 x 107 disintegrations per sec. This is about 1000 times the measurable gamma activity of 1 g of uranium in equilibrium with all its decay products; hence there is ample activity for detection. Under the same conditions of activation, most of the other elements do not reach this relatively high disintegration rate. Although this is in favor of the proposed technique, other problems must be considered. For mobile operation, it is desirable to obtain the largest neutron flux to weight ratio. Hence we have used a small 150-kev accelerator-type neutron source rather than an isotopic source such as an americium-beryllium neutron source. By use of remote control system, an accelerator-type neutron source can be safely used without the massive shield required for an isotopic source. Moreover, an accelerator-type source is more versatile in that it allows one to use a flux of either 14-Mev or 3-Mev neutrons, depending on whether a tritium or a deuterium target is used. With a 14-Mev generator, one can obtain a flux of 10 9 neutrons/cm 2/sec, and with a 3-Mev generator, the flux is generally two orders of magnitude less. AN intelligent discussion of the oil situation and its needs, whether from the standpoint of the prospector, the operator, the engineer, or the public administrative officer, must be founded upon a knowledge of the law under which oil lands are obtained. A consideration of new legislation must be prefaced by an understanding of the present law and its results. This paper undertakes to present no new remedy for the ills of the present situation, no new solution of the problems the oil business is facing. It attempts merely to summarize the present law, its provisions, its origin, its development, and its effects. The discussion does not pretend to be exhaustive from a legal standpoint. It aims to avoid legal intricacies Which tend to confuse rather than clarify. It seeks but to present the essentials of the existing situation. The title to government lands known to contain valuable deposits of petroleum may be acquired only under the terms of the placer law as embodied in Section 2329 et seq. of the Revised Statutes. As a preliminary to considering the desirability of this situation it is profitable to examine into its origin. ORIGIN OF THE LAW Congress has left no room for doubt as to the legal applicability of the placer law to oil lands. The Act of Feb. 11, 1897 (29 Stat., 526), provides: "that any person authorized to enter lands under the mining laws of the United States may enter and obtain patent to land containing petroleum or other mineral oils, and chiefly valuable therefor, under the provisions of the laws relating to placer mineral claims."
