THE slate industry of the United States has shown a marked decline in value of products made annually since the peak year 1925, although there has been moderate improvement over the lean years 1932 to 1934. In 1940, the value of all slate products sold was approximately 5 3/4 million dollars for a total output of 473,450 short tons. The quantity sold was a little less and the value a great deal lower than the annual averages for the past two decades. Enormous quantities of waste materials result from the quarrying, splitting and milling of slate. Obviously, utilization of such waste material is desirable, not only from the viewpoint of economical operation but also for the purpose of conserving natural resources. One possible use is to produce expanded or puffed lightweight aggregate for use in concretes. Such concretes are strong enough for specific uses, and the advantage of lightness could be obtained in such structures as the walls and roofs of buildings, suspension-bridge roadways and various other applications where weight is a factor. Conceivably, these uses could consume an appreciable annual tonnage. USE OF WASTE SLATES FOR MAKING AGGREGATES The lightweight-aggregate industry has been discussed elsewhere4.5 and need not be covered in detail in this paper. The materials commonly utilized are naturally occurring aggregates such as volcanic cinder, tuff and pumice; by-product materials, such as ordinary cinders and air-cooled slags; and the specially manufactured products, including Haydite, Pottsco, Gravelite, Cel-seal, Superock and Waylite. Slates, however, have not been given the consideration they merit, especially in the United States. In the British Isles, some work has been done' on certain Welsh slates by the Building Research Station to stimulate the use of these wastes. REQUIREMENTS FOR RAW MATERIALS As pointed out by Hughes,4 the lightweight-aggregate industry is segregated in regions adjacent to large cities in order to localize the market and avoid the necessity of long freight haulage. Waste slate from the deposits of eastern Pennsylvania, northern Maryland, and Virginia would meet the basic requirement of any low-priced structural raw material. One apparent advantage is attained when slate waste, normally discarded, is utilized in the manufacture of a by-product. Mining or quarrying costs usually have been assessed against the main product. Some additional grinding might be desirable, but this operation would be relatively cheap, as most slates grind easily. It is believed that virtually all slates, when properly heated, will expand to some degree. However, types that will expand from 3 to 7 times their original volume are preferred. On Nov. 11, 1909, M. Alexandre Pourcel, of Paris, France, upon the proposal of a large number of distinguished members, and the unanimous recommendation of the Council, was elected by the Board of Directors an Honorary Member of the Institute. M. Pourcel has devoted forty-three years to the metallurgy of iron and steel ; and the work which he did between thirty and forty years ago constitutes an important part of the founda¬tion of the practice of to-day. Among his striking contribu¬tions are : (1) his perfection, in 1869, of the manufacture of high-grade ferro-manganese in a carbon-lined open-hearth furnace, instead of the costly crucibles previously used; (2) his discovery, in 1874, of the method of making solid steel cast¬ings; (3) his manufacture, in 1875, of ferro-manganese and silico-spiegel in the blast-furnace; and (4) his anticipation, in 1875, of modern American blast-furnace practice, by the pro¬duction, in a very small furnace, of Bessemer pig containing 2.5 per cent. of silicon, from a burden yielding only 46 per cent. of iron, and with a consumption, per ton of pig, of only 1,8401b. of coke, containing 15 per cent. of ash. These brilliant pioneer achievements, together with his contributions to cur¬rent technical literature, won for him the Bessemer gold medal of the Iron and Steel Institute ; the great" medal of honor," which is the highest award of the French Society of Mineral Industry, and other gold medals, as well as the distinction of honorary membership of the Comité des Forges de France, which was conferred upon him in 1891. Pourcel has been instrumental, as consulting engineer of the Société de Commentry-Fourchambault, at Decazeville, France, in an extraordinary development of the manufacture of special steels. The current technology of large rock conveyors is reviewed. Based on this investigation two large rock conveyor concepts have been developed and a test facility investigation designed and fabricated. The USBM will test these concepts along with loading and transfer points for handling mine run rock material up to 1.5 m (4.9 ft) in size. An evaluation of open pit mining systems using large rock conveyors documents substantial cost savings when compared to truck haulage.

Ferromanganese alloys react with aluminu-silica brick in blast furnace hearths and cause the formation of new phases with low refractoriness and consequent failure of the refractory lining. The nature of these reactions is explained on the basis of petrographic observations, thermodynamic data, and Phase equilibrium considerations. Animproued hearth design resulted from these findings. The production of ferromanganese in blast furnaces presents many problems which are not encountered in the production of iron in the same furnaces. One of the most serious of these problems is the rapid failure of refractories caused by their reaction with the ferromanganese metal. The present paper describes such a "hearth attack", its symptoms, causes, and cure. Following an introductory discussion of operating practice in ferromanganese blast furnaces, results are presented of a petrographic examination of samples from a furnace which had to be shut down because of refractory failure. The causes of this failure are then analyzed on the basis of petrographic observations combined with thermodynamic and phase equilibrium data available in the literature. The latter type of data were subsequently used as a guide in recommending improvements in hearth designs which have since proven themselves successful in practical operations. I) FERROMANGANESE BLAST FURNACE PRACTICE It is considered good practice to blow in a furnace on iron and operate it in this way for a period of time preliminary to producing ferrornanganese. During this time, iron generally penetrates the bottom refractories six or more feet below the original working surface of the hearth. Not only does this metal pervade the joints to these depths, but the pores of the refractories are usually also filled by molten iron. The high throughput of the iron furnace provides ample heat to maintain a high temperature in the hearth refractories. This, together with a high ferrostatic pressure, causes porous clay brick of the hearth to shrink. During subsequent use of such a furnace in ferromanganese production, the iron in the pores of hearth brick if; replaced to some extent by ferromanganese. The replacement is usually not complete. This is probably due to the lower metal throughput and lower prevailing temperatures resulting from this in the brick of the hearth bottom. When the ferrornanganese furnace is banked—or when the temperature in the furnace falls due to a furnace delay—-manganese oxidizes even though the atmosphere is largely CO. Considerable expansion accompanies this oxidation of manganese from metal to oxide. The hearth refractories are then subjected to the disintegrating forces of the volume expansion. These forces may in extreme cases be large enough to lift the furnace off its mantle supports as was described in a previous paper.' When cooling takes place slowly, however, and the temperature remains at a fairly high level, the refractories undergo fluxing action by the MnO. This latter reaction and the reduction of SiO2 of the clay brick is the general subject of the present paper. The observations to be described herein were made on a ferromanganese furnace located at the Johnstown plant of Bethlehem Steel Co. The furnace was lined entirely with clay refractories and had operated on iron for 266 days and on ferromanganese for 96 days prior to being taken off because of a hearth wall failure. II) PETROGRAPHIC EXAMINATION AND CHEMICAL ANALYSIS The photograph reproduced in Fig. 1 shws a cross section of the upper part of an 18 by 9 by 4-1/2 in. bottom block removed from the blast furnace. This brick came from a depth of approximately 6 ft below the original working face of the bottom. It will be noted that the 4-1/2 in. dimension is almost the same as when the brick entered the furnace. Three characteristically different zones marked I, II, and III on the print of Fig. 1 are apparent. Results of chemical analyses of the original brick and samples from each of these zones are listed in Table I. Petrographically the various zones were characterized as follows: The central zone marked I was essentially un-reacted brick. THE diffusion of copper in silver has been studied by Sawatzky and Jaumot1 and Cahoon and Youdelis.2 Sawatzky and Jaumot measured tracer diffusion in single crystal specimens but the 12.9 h half-life of CU64 limited the time of the diffusion anneal to about 50 hr, and in consequence the minimum temperature of the investigation was 716°C. Cahoon and Youdelis employed polycrystalline diffusion couples, and measured the interdiffusion coefficient over the range 0 to 2 at. pct Cu. These experiments were performed at temperatures down to 630°C and a discontinuity in the Arrhenius plot was observed at -700°C. The high D-values at lower temperatures were attributed to the effect of grain boundary diffusion. The present experiments were undertaken to investigate this anomaly and study the low temperature region of the diffusion of copper in silver. The method employed single crystal samples and a plated source of copper. Silver single crystals 2½ by 4 in. sq were grown from zone-refined silver bar (>99.99 pct Ag) by the Bridgeman technique, and $ in. thick slices were cut by spark machining. The specimens were electro-polished, and a 2 µm layer of copper was electroplated on to the planar surface at one end of each specimen using a potentiostatic voltage source. The following solution was used for plating: CuSO4 . 5H2O 125 gm H2SO4 (S.G. 1.8) 53 ml H2O 1000 ml The diffusion couples were sealed in capsules, in an argon atmosphere, and were annealed at either 701, 597, or 498°C. The temperature measurements were made to an accuracy of *l°C After the anneal, the penetration of copper into the silver was determined using an electron probe micro-analyzer. 100 sec scaler measurements of the intensity of Cu Ka! X-radiation were performed at 2 to 5 µm intervals along a line normal to the source, with a beam potential of 25 kv. Allowances were made for the background radiation, and the dead-time of the counting system in the normal way, and the intensity ratios were corrected to weight concentration by the method of Duncumb & de-Casa.3 For the analysis of the diffusion profiles, it was first observed that the copper layer did not completely dissolve in the host crystal for the specimens annealed at 498 and 591 whereas for the specimen annealed at 701°C, a single phase solid solution was formed. INDUSTRIAL specialization has rapidly created a demand for new and better alloys. A more thorough understanding of the requirements of specific industries and the discovery of processes by which it has been made possible to utilize certain metallic elements in larger quantities, together with greater purity in most virgin metals, has resulted in a great increase in the number and variety of alloys. This increase in the number of elements entering into non-ferrous alloy manufacture has increased the contamination in secondary metals, as received by the smelter. In order to successfully refine scrap of a much more complex nature it has been necessary for the smelter to install new equipment and to constantly search for new methods of refining as well as to improve the methods already in use. In some instances it is largely responsible for specialization in the secondary metal industry. It is usually necessary to remove the contaminating impurities in scrap or eliminate to a degree not objectionable, no matter how introduced. In order to know what metals or elements are of an objectionable nature, the smelter must make a study of the effect of single elements and combinations of elements on many of the physical and mechanical properties, such as strength, ductility, color, hardness, casting soundness, etc. The smelter of secondary metals must be able to utilize scrap materials of all kinds, for, sooner or later, most fabricated metal parts and the waste products formed during the process of manufacture find their way to the smelter. In addition, the smelter, in contracting for salvaged material from the producer, gets some undesirable and unusual materials. The value of secondary metals and the importance of their recovery has increased in recent years and it is no longer sufficient to recover the base metal only, such as copper from copper-bearing material, but it inessential that other elements present be recovered and converted into useful form.

As a part of the systematic study of the alloys of iron under the auspices of the Engineering Foundation, and preliminary to the commencement of comprehensive work on this larger subject, the authors have undertaken an investigation of the available literature dealing with the alloys of iron and silicon. The purpose is to collect all the data in English and foreign languages and present them in two monographs, one of a more scientific and the second of a more industrially useful nature. Of course, a great deal of information upon the constitution of the iron-silicon alloys was found specificially upon the changes of phase in the equilibrium diagram and the different phases present, such as solid solution, chemical compounds (iron silicides), etc. While no extended research was contemplated in the particular study undertaken, nevertheless the data collected proved to be so contradictory in many respects that a simple study of some of the outstanding problems involved in the constitution and equilibrium diagram was undertaken. Because research was not a primary object of the work, and also because of the extreme industrial importance of the silicon alloys between 0.80 and 14 per cent. silicon, and finally because of the unsatisfactory state of knowledge existing as to these alloys, the experimental investigation was limited entirely to alloys with less than 10 per cent. silicon. Discussion oF Continuous Series It has often been said in print that the iron-silicon alloys form a continuous series of solid solutions from 0 to 15 per cent. silicon. This claim the authors are inclined to doubt: first, because the alloys from 0 to 4.25 per cent. silicon are ductile and malleable at atmospheric temperature, while those with 5 per cent. or more of silicon are comparatively hard and brittle. Furthermore, the alloys with more than 4.25 per cent. silicon are comparatively hard and low in ductility at atmospheric temperature, but become much more ductile when heated slightly. I HAVE had an opportonity, within the last few months, of making a large number of physical and chemical tests of steel for boiler and ship-plate, which has been, and is now being, used principally for the United States Government cruisers, now building in Mr. John Roach's yard, at Chester, Pa. Through the courtesy of the Messrs. Houston, of the Chester Rolling Mills, I have the honor to lay before the members of the Institate the results of these tests. These results have developed some points in regard to the nature of steel, which are more or less new, and which, I hope, will prove interesting. The original specifications, as regards the manner of testing, were so inipracticable (when their severity mas taken into consideration), that the keel of the first vessel, which will be launched next month, would, had they been carried out, probably not have been laid until next year. At my suggestion, in order to simplify and expedite the immense amount of testing that had to be done, the Naval Advisory Board was induced, after considerable discussion, to alter the specifications, so as to test each heat, instead of each lot of twenty plates, but reserved the right of making the quenching-test on a piece from each ingot, after it had been rolled. This relieved us from the anxiety of having a lot of plates rejected, after they had beell rolled and sheared, by reason of the presence of one or two plates which might have been injured in heating or rolling, or which might not have been able to stand the tests; while it insured the Government in obtaining a uniform quality of steel, and prevented the temptation to introduce a half-dozen or more had plates in a lot, and run the risk of their being selected as the testplates. EVERY new mining district has had its own peculiar experiences in inventing and experimenting upon new methods for the various operations of mining, and more particularly in the processes of crushing and dressing ores. As a matter of course, during this period many old things have been reinvented, patented, and cast aside, there to remain until at a future day other geniuses shall bring them forth again as new. In this respect the Copper Region of Michigan has not been behind other mining centres, and probably in no other part of the country has more money been expended in devising new machines and improvements upon old ones for the crushing of the rock. The appliances for washing the sand have not been so varied, simply for the reason that, having but one mineral, or rather metal, of high specific gravity to separate from rock material which varies but little in its character in any one mine, it requires much less care than is necessary in most mining centres of the world. At the beginning of operations in that district most of the work was in the control of Cornish miners, who introduced the simplest of Cornish mills, namely, wooden stem pestles, with wooden shafts and cams. These were well suited to the small mines, and particularly to the limited means of transporting more expensive machinery. As these facilities improved, they were enabled to change to iron, and to vary their patterns of rods, shafts, cams, and mortars. The most approved pattern, finally obtained, is the square or round stem, with collar adjustable by means of keys. In its present form it is a bar of cold rolled shafting, an eye in the top, an adjustable collar with key-plate and keys, the head and a shoe of chilled iron. The stem is fitted into the head by a slight taper. The battery has heretofore been of wood, lined with chilled cast plates, and bed-plate of the same, but within the past year the California pattern has been introduced. The screens are of sheet-steel, drilled with 16 holes to the inch. During this period of trial and gradual improvement in the pestle stamps, in the years 1855-6, the Ball steam-stamps were intro¬duced, and after years of labor and expense, have been made the most efficient and powerful machines ever yet used for the purpose. The iron-mines of the Ilsede Hutte Co. are at a town called Peine, about 20 miles east of the city of Hanover, on the railroad to Brunswick (Braunschweig). Hanover, the capital of the province, is a military city, of approximately 250,000 inhabitants, and Brunswick, 33 miles to the westward, has half this number. The mines here described are located in a hamlet called Bulten. The Ilsede Hutte Co. operates two mines, 1.5 miles apart, in this district, Gruber Bulten Adenstadt and Gruber Lengede Bodenstadt. It also operates an iron-mine north of Hanover, known as Eiserhaven, and one in the Harz mountains, the Georg Friedrich, at Grauhof. At Bulten a coarse conglomerate, a, Figs. 1 and 2, contains nodules of limonite, cemented together by calcium phosphate. The ore contains Fe, 25 to 45; Mn, 3 to 4; P, 0.6 to 1.4; '5, 0.02 to 0.09; and CaCO,, 40 per cent. Directly above the conglomerate is limestone, 6, followed by a mixture of clay and sand, c. Below the conglomerate is a hard clay floor, d. The ore-body, from 10 to 12 km. long, and from 3 to 4 km. wide, has a maximum thickness of 20 m. It dips approximately 10" S.E., and strikes K 45° E. Diamond-drill prospecting shows that the thickness diminishes to 1 m. as the end of the deposit is approached to the northward. At this point the deposit is 250 m. below the surface. In Fig. 2, the arrow, A, indicates the general direction of the work along the face, a, which is carried forward in a straight line for its entire length. At B, a train is approaching, which has come from the bench-track, shown at C, by a circuitous route, and is dumping the overburden behind the face, in the space left by the excavated rock.
