Parameter estimates affect both the optimum field development decisions and the economic result. A general methodology for assessment of the effects of parameter uncertainty in offshore development decision situations is proposed, and used to analyze aspects of the initial development situation for the Statfjord field.

(Read at the Amenia Meeting, October, 1877.) DURING the winter of 1868-9, I was called upon by Professor F. H. Storer, to put up the Bunsen filter pump in the chemical laboratory of the Masschusetts Institute of Technology. As the laboratory is on the lower floor, it was found necessary to use a great deal of cumbrous pipe and apparatus to get the necessary column. It was then suggested that if an instrument could be devised which would make use of the hydrant pressure in the service-pipe, it would do away with the objectionable features of the Bunsen pump. After using the Bunsen pump for some years, the jet pump to be described in this paper was devised, and it has since been adopted by Prof. Wing in the quantitative laboratory of the school. I am much indebted to Prof. Wing for his aid in starting the manufacture in brass of these jet pumps, which are now to be had in Boston. The jet pump much resembles the Giffard injector in form. It differs from it in the fact that water is the impelling fluid, and air the impelled, while with the injector steam is used to impel water. The principle of condensation of steam, which is Water availed of in the injector, is entirely wanting in the jet pump. The jet pump consists in a water jet, w, (see figure), a constriction or waist, a, and a waste tube, o. The success of the jet pump depends on the following conditions 1. The relation between the sizes of sectional area of a and w. 2. The proximity of a and w. 3. The form and angle of the two hollow cones whose vertices make the constriction a. 4. The relative size of sectional area of w and o. 5. The zigzags, or an equivalent means of making foam. The w phase in zirconium alloys containing more than G pct Nb can form in a difjUsionless manner during quenching or with composition change during aging at temperatures below 550°C. The latter treatment establishes a metastable equilibrium between an w phase containing 5 pct Nb and a ß phase containing 45 pct Nb. The superconducting transition temperat~ire of quenched Z?-10 pct Nb and Zr-15 pct Nb alloys is increased by aging at 375°C and both alloys exhibit the same Tc after prolonged aging. The superconducting transition both in the quenched and in the aged alloys is relatively sharp (occurring ovev a temperature range of <0.5°K), and is interpreted in terms of the microstructure that characterizes the ß-w) mixture and proximity effects postulated for thin-film superconductors. At elevated temperatures alloys of the transition elements from groups 4 to 6 in the periodic table exhibit wide ranges of mutual solubility in the bcc structure. Except for compositions that are high in a group 4 element? the bcc structure can be retained at room temperature by quenching and several systematic studies of the influence of composition on superconductivity in bcc alloys have been reported.&apos;&apos;2 The high-temperature bcc form (ß) of the group 4 elements—titanium, zirconium, hafnium—is not retained upon quenching but instead transforms marten-sitically to the hcp structure (a). The Ms temperature can be lowered by alloying the group 4 metals with a solute from a higher group and with a critical amount of solute the martensitic transformation can be suppressed. The 3 phase, however, is not retained without modification. Rather, a metastable phase, w (in particular in titanium- and zirconium-base alloys), occurs over a fairly wide range of compositions above that required for suppression of the martensitic transformation.3,4 As in the formation of a, the transformation of ß to w occurs in a diffusionless manner during quenching and the temperature for its initiation (ws) is lowered by increasing solute content. The ws temperature can be well below room temperature and reversibility of the transformation allows w that forms on cooling to low temperatures to disappear again when the sample is returned to room temperature.5 In Zr-Nb alloys the w phase can also be formed during aging at temperatures below 550°c.5 In this treatment, a metastable equilibrium is established between a niobium-rich ß phase and a zirconium-rich w phase. The present study of Zr-Nb alloys was undertaken to examine the influence of microstructure: as controlled by composition and heat treatment, on the superconducting transition temperature, Tc. MATERIALS AND PROCEDURE The alloys were prepared from zirconium crystal bar that was spectrochemically pure except for 30 ppm of Al, 40 ppm of Cu, 100 ppm of Fe, and 1 ppm of each B and Pb. The niobium used was 99.5+ pct pure containing according to the suppliers&apos; (Stauffer Chemical Co.) analysis a maximum of 50 ppmO, 60 ppm of N, 30 ppm of C, 5 ppm of H, 200 ppm of Ta, 50 ppm of Mo, and 15 ppm each of Fe, Co, and Ni. The alloys were prepared in the form of buttons weighing approximately 4 g by arc melting on a water-cooled copper hearth in an inert-gas atmosphere. All alloys were heat-treated in the ß-phase region for 3 days at 1000°C and water-quenched. For heat treatment, the specimens, 0.5 cm in diam by 1.0 cm long, were wrapped in zirconium foil and sealed in an inert-gas atmosphere inside quartz capsules. Quenching was done by breaking the capsules under water. Subsequent aging treatments of Zr-10 pct Nb and Zr-15 pct Nb alloys were done by placing the specimens in a lead bath at 375°C and quenching in chilled brine. The phases present in the quenched and aged alloys were identified by optical and X-ray metallography. X-ray powder patterns were taken at room temperature with a 114.6-mm-diam Debye-Scherrer camera and CuK-a radiation. Superconducting transition temperatures were determined from magnetic-permeability measurements6 in a 10 oe field. The superconducting transition temperature was determined from a plot of galvanometric deflection as a function of temperature by extrapolation of the linear portion of the curve to zero deflection. In Figs. 1 and 3 the arrows indicate the temperature range of the transitions. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Superconductivity in Quenched Alloys. In Fig. 1 Tc for alloys quenched from 1000°C is plotted against nominal composition. Indicated also in Fig. 1 are results of metallographic studies. Alloys containing less than 5 pct Nb transform martensitically to a during quenching from 1000°C and Fig. 1 demonstrates that Tc increases significantly as the niobium concentration in a is increased. On the basis of the Bardeen-Cooper-Schreiffer theory of superconductivity7 it seems most likely that this increase in Tc results from an increase in the density of electronic states as zirconium is alloyed with niobium. This increased density of states has been revealed clearly in low-temperature specific-heat measurements.8 The martensitic transformation to a is suppressed when the alloy content exceeds 5 pct Nb. ONLY in recent years has any practical headway been made in the application of aerial photography to geological problems, and up to the present time its principal value to the geologist and mining engineer has been in "areal geology;" i. e., the study of formations as revealed at the surface. The object of this paper is to set forth briefly the principal advantages that may be derived from aerial photographic data in geological work and to serve in a measure as a guide to those who may be con-templating its use. Geophysical prospecting has for object the locating of mineral under the surface. Inasmuch as the geologist&apos;s chief complaint in life is a dual one-inability to see under the surface and inability to visualize comprehensively what he does see on top of the ground-geophysical prospecting coupled with aerial photography should do much to lessen his burdens. To what extent aerial photography can be made a useful adjunct to geophysical prospecting remains to be proved, but the inference drawn here is that it holds many alluring possibilities. To avoid disappointments, it should be stated at the outset that to the :geologist or mining engineer an aerial photograph or mosaic is only a tool, the effecient use of which he must set out to master. Upon his skill and ingenuity in applying it to particular problems will depend largely the value of the results that he will obtain. Under the most favorable conditions an aerial mosaic or even a few loose photographs, because of the exceptionally comprehensive oversight which they afford of field data, such as dips and strike observations at isolated outcrops, local indications of faulting, mineral and fossil finds, greatly facilitate study and correlation, save much tedious foot work, and may repay their cost many times. Even so, types of country may be found where the most, skillful use of the best of pictures will produce results so meager as to render the cost of aerial photography entirely unwarranted.

A new mechanism of crystal growth involving oapor, liquid, crnd solid phases explains many observations of the effect of implurities in crystal growth from the vapor. The role of the impuuitq is to form a liquid Solution with the crystalline tnalerial to be grown from the vapor. Crystal growth occurs by precipitatzon from the supersaturated liquid crt tlie solid-liquid zntevfnce. A crystalline defect, such as a screw dislocation, is not essetztial for VLS (vapor -liquid-solid) growth. The concept of the VLS mechanism is discussed in detail with reference to tire controlled growth of silicon crystals using gold, platinum, palladium, nickel, silver, or copper as an implurity agent. RECENTLY a short communication&apos; described a new concept of crystal growth from the vapor, the VLS mechanism. In this paper we present a detailed description of the process and its application to the growth of silicon crystals and we discuss its relevance to existing concepts of .&apos;whisker" crystal growth. Crystal growth from the vapor is usually explained by a theory proposed by Frank2 and developed in detail by Burton, Cabrera, and Frank.3 In this theory a screw dislocation terminating at the growth surface provides a self-perpetuating step. Accommodation of atoms at the step is energetically favorable, and is possible of much lower supersatu-ration than required for two-dimensional nucleation. Crystals of a unique form resulting from aniso-tropic growth from the vapor are "whisker" or filamentary ones. Such crystals have a lengthwise dimension orders of magnitude larger than those of the cross section. For most filamentary crystals both the fast-growth direction and directions of lateral growth have small Miller indices. The special growth form for a whisker crystal implies that the tip surface of the crystal must be a preferred growth site. sears4 proposed that, according to the Frank theory. a whisker contains a screw dislocation emergent at the growing tip. Such an axial defect provides a preferred growth site and accounts for unidirectional growth. The hypothesis was extended by Price. Vermilyea. and Webb," still implying the presence of a dislocation at the whisker tip. They postulated that impurities arriving at the fast-growing tip face become buried while those arriving on the surface of slow-growing lateral faces accumulate and thereby hinder growth. These considerations led to a whisker morphology. There is increasing evidence that most whisker crystals grown from the vapor are dislocation-free. Webb and his coworkers6 searched for an Eshelby twist7 in zinc? cadmium, iron. copper, silver, and palladium whisker crystals. They found unequivocal evidence for an axial screw dislocation in only one element, palladium. However, not every palladium crystal examined contained a dislocation. Observations with the electron microscope have failed to show dislocations in whisker crystals of zinc, silicon.9 and one morphology of AlN.10 Since many whiskers are completely free of dislocations, an axial dislocation does not appear to be required for whisker growth of many substances. A significant advance in understanding whisker growth has been a recognition of the need for impurities. This requirement has been clearly demonstrated for copper,11 iron,13 and silicon9-1 whiskers. For silicon, detailed studies proved conclusively that certain impurities, for example, nickel or gold, are essential. Another pertinent phenomenon which has received little attention is the presence of a liquid layer or droplets on the surface of some crystals growing from the vapor. Crystals in which this has been observed include p-toluidine,14 MoO3,15 ferrites,16 and silicon carbide.&apos;" The liquid layers or globules were considered to be metastable phases, molecular complexes, or intermediate polymers originating from condensation of the vapor phase. The possibility has been suggested that the halide being reduced is condensed at the tip18 or adsorbed on the surface11 of a growing metal whisker, for example copper. The literature on whiskers discloses illustrations of rounded terminations at the tips. These appear. for example, on crystals of A12O3,19,20 sic,21 and BeO.22 For BeO, Edwards and Happel suggested that during growth of the whisker the rounded termination consisted of molten beryllium enclosed in a solid shell of BeO. A recent paper9 on the growth of silicon whiskers contains many observations pertinent to an understanding of the mechanisnl of whisker growth. These observations are summarized as follows. 1) Silicon whiskers are dislocation-free. 2) Certain impurities are essential for whisker growth. Without such impurities the silicon deposit is in the form of a film or consists of discrete polyhedral crystals.

A heat of electrolytic iron, to whzch alunzinutn and nitrogen had been added, was hot-rolled, cold-rolled 90 pct, and recrystallized at temperatures from 500" to 700°C. Primary recrystallization textures appear to arise from competitive growth of two types of nuclei: 1) those having orientations belonging to the "usual" primary recrystallization texture found in riming steel, and 2) those with the {111} (110) ovientation. Development of a (111}(1 10) component in the primary recrystallization texture occurs only over a certain interval of isothermal recrystallizatzon temperatures when the material is supersaturated with respect to the precipitation of AlN. Lowering the degree of supersaturation depresses the temperature interval in which a (111)(110) component occurs. An elongated, &apos;pancake-shaped" recrystallized pain structure and a marked delay in the start of recrystallization were found in all specimens which were supersaturated with respect to A1N precipitation after cold work, regardless of their recrystallization texture. ONE of the consequences of killing low-carbon steel with aluminum is a significant change in recrystallization behavior. About 15 years ago, Solter and eatttiel showed that this behavior was largely controlled by aluminum and nitrogen in the steel. If complete precipitation of A1N was prevented before cold rolling, an increased "recrystallization temperature" was observed in subsequent. annealing, and the recrystal-lized grains were not equiaxed. Leslie et a1.2 studied this phenomenon in some detail and clearly demonstrated the relationship between A1N precipitation, recrystallization kinetics, and the development of "pancake-shaped" grains. It has also been known for some time that aluminum-killed steels, processed to produce elongated "pancake" grains, develop a (11 I}( 110) primary recrystallization texture. This texture has not been found in iron or low-carbon rimming steel as a primary texture4j5 but has been observed following grain growth in electrolytic iron.5 The present work was undertaken to study in more detail the effect of A1N supersaturation on recrystallization textures in iron. LITERATURE REVIEW The deformation texture in heavily rolled iron has been studied in detail by Bennewitz.~ The texture consists primarily of a partial fiber texture about a (110) axis in the rolling direction, designated here as fiber texture A. It includes the range of orienta- tions (111)[110] - (001)[ 110] - (11l)[110]. A weak secondary texture also is present.6 This is a duplex partial fiber texture about two (110) fiber axes located 60 deg from the rolling direction and 30 deg from the sheet normal. The range of this texture, designated here as fiber texture B, about the [101} fiber axis is (112)[110] - near (545)[252] - (211:1[011] *The range given here follows Bennewit~.~ A few pole figures from re-crystallized material indicate a broader range than this.&apos; However, the components which are strongest in the recrystallization texture are in this range.&apos;________________________________________________________ Primary recrystallization textures in unkilled steels can be accounted for by growth of members of fiber texture B present in the deformed metal.5 However, while members of fiber texture B dominate the primary texture, other orientations survive primary recrystallization as well. In particular, some {111}(110) members of fiber texture A must also grow during primary recrystallization, because a well-defined {1ll)( 110) texture develops during subsequent grain growth at 700°C.5 The unusual recrystallization behavior of deformed supersaturated solid solutions has been attributed to: 1) retention of the solute in solution,&apos; 2) formation of coherent, preprecipitation solute clusters prior to and during re~r~stallization,~ and 3) formation of a precipitate prior to and concurrent with recrystallization.&apos;~-&apos;~ When aluminum is supersaturated with iron, the difference in grain boundary mobility between general high-angle boundaries and certain special coincidence site boundaries is apparently eliminated.&apos; In aluminum-killed steels, precipitation of A1N can take place at ordinary subcritical recrystallization temperatures. The rate of precipitation increases with increasing aluminum or nitrogen contents.2&apos;13 There is some doubt, however, as to whether true precipitates form during the time at temperature needed to complete recrystallization. Leslie ef a1.2 found that precipitation in one steel was complete after about 100 min at 700GC, or after about 1000 min at 650GC, as measured by chemical analysis for AlN. Aoki et a1.,13 using internal friction for dissolved nitrogen, showed that a large fraction of the dissolved nitrogen was removed from solution within a few minutes annealing time at temperatures from 400" to 800°C. However , the rate of formation of AlN, as detected bv chemical analvsis. was much slower than the apparent rate of nitrogen removal. Hasebe,&apos;~~ using carbon extraction replicas, has identified A1N precipitates by electron diffraction in a 0.2 C steel, solution-treated at 1300°C and annealed 2 hr at 700°C. Borchers and kim,I6 also using a replication technique, observed precipitates after annealing treatments as short as 2 min at 640°C. However, Leslie et a1.&apos; state that no A1N precipitate can be seen while recrystallization is being inhibited in aluminum-killed steel.

THE ferrosilicon grinding unit at the Central Mill of the Eagle-Picher Mining & Smelting Co. near Picher, Okla., was completed in March 1947. The object of the plant was to grind pigs of ferrosilicon, having a size of approximately 1 ½ by 4 by 12 in. and an analysis of 85 pct Fe and 15 pct Si, to approximately 100 mesh by crushing and wet grinding in a ball-mill classifier circuit. The minus-loo mesh ferrosilicon had formerly been purchased, and was used as medium in the heavy media process for treatment of lead-zinc ores. From the standpoint of dollars and cents, the cost of minus-100 mesh ferrosilicon was roughly $40.00 per ton more than pigs of the corresponding alloy delivered to the mill. Estimated wet grinding costs were considerably below this figure. The possible saving in cost of make-up medium for the cone plant was particularly attractive since, at that time, the plant losses averaged over four tons of minus-100 mesh ferrosilicon per day. Aside from the probable saving on the grinding charge, the need for such a unit was twofold. First, periodic fluctuations in the differential between the top and bottom densities of the cone were thought to be detrimental to metallurgy. There was little doubt that an intermediate differential existed at which the heavy media separation was most efficient, representing a compromise between concentrate grade and tailing loss. Furthermore, if a finer, but considerably cleaner, medium could be obtained, there was the possibility that the differential could be decreased without increasing the viscosity, or conversely, the viscosity of the medium decreased without increasing the differential. Preliminary to experimental work aimed at pegging the cone differential and circulating medium viscosity at whatever values were found to be most efficient, it was essential to have control over both the non-magnetic content of the medium and the particle size of the contained ferrosilicon. The latter was possible by means of a grinding unit at the mill. Second, whereas the ferrosilicon alloys are made by a number of manufacturers, only two, to our knowledge, grind it in any quantity for use in heavy media plants. For all practical purposes, the Central Mill was limited to one source of supply, a particularly vulnerable position. In case the supply was cut off, it was thought that pigs of the 85 pct Fe, 15 pct Si alloy could be obtained elsewhere, providing means of grinding them was available. There was no published information available covering wet grinding of ferrosilicon. Dry grinding in batch mills and in continuous mills with air classification was being practiced, but the cost of grinding was excessive and the dust condition objectionable. It appeared that primary and secondary crushing was no particular problem, providing heavy duty equipment was used;

US 4,181,588 - Direct extraction of lead from lead sulflde ore. Ore is leached with a solution of ferric chloride and sodium chloride. The leach liquor is filtered to remove sulfur and gangue, then cooled in a crystallizer to precipitate lead chloride The slurry from the crystallizer is subjected to electrolysis to deposit lead chloride on the cathode plate. A bacterium, Thiobacillus ferrooxidans, is of prime importance in the formation of acid drainage from pyritic material. Above pH 4.5, T. ferrooxidans increases initial acidification; below pH 4.5, it allows acidification to continue by oxidizing Fe2 +. Below a pH of approximately 2.5, the activity of F3+ is significant and results in steady-state cycling between oxidation of pyrite by Fe3 + and bacterial oxidation of Fe2 +. Laboratory and field tests demonstrate that inhibition of T. ferrooxidans by controlled release of anionic detergents can inexpensively reduce pyrite oxidation and acid formation.

The principal mines of this region are 7 miles SE. from Gusa, and about 4 miles in a direct line from the seacoast. Gusa is a small town on the north coast of Mindanao, 4 miles east from Cagayan, the capital of the province of Misamis. The mines are reached by steep, narrow trails over ridges varying in altitude from 1100 to 1600 feet above sealevel. The whole region is covered with a thick growth of tall grass, except a few spots on the sides of some of the hills, where there are patches of timber and jungle.

This paper states the theory underlying the design of two kinds of dimensionally scaled models of parts of idealized oil fields. One of these simulates an oil well and its surrounding sand for a distance of 16 ft. radially from the well. The other model simulates linear flow through layered sands. Construction and operation of the models are described and typical data are given. The unique features in the design of the models are: (I) the treatment of the permeability-viscosity quotient as a single variable and (2) the use of previously reported experimentally developed relations between relative permeability and saturation and capillary pressure, saturation, porosity, permeability and interfacial tension. The models at present simulate flow of oil and water only, through unconsolidated sands. They are superior to unscaled models, which may give rise to erroneous conclusions. The models are designed to study the desirability of various methods of well completion and the effects of various factors on recovery of oil from layered sands. Introduction Recent work on the fundamental behavior of flowing mixtures of fluids in sands has resulted in the development of some new theory in this field, much of which has been presented in previous papers.l-4 However, the application of this theory to the behavior of oil wells or oil fields has proved too complicated for ordinary mathematical techniques, except in very highly simplified cases. A practical solution to this problem appears therefore, to lie in the use of dimensionally scaled models of elements of oil fields. The object of this paper is, first, to present the theoretical and experimental basis of the design of such models, and, second, to describe their construction and operation. Experiments now under way on the models already built will yield material for other reports, which will be devoted to interpretation of the results in terms of oil-field behavior. So far, simple dimensional models of two kinds have been built and are being operated. These models represent different parts of an idealized oil field but obey the same underlying theory. The only fluids represented are oil and water, since certain questionable approximations are necessary for gas-liquid systems. General Theory Dimensional models have been used in other fields for a long time, and their theory is adequately given in the literature. 5 Here, it suffices to state that each physical element entering into a dynamic relation may be given a definite description in terms of three fundamental, but arbitrarily chosen, dimensions. These usually are mass, length, and time, symbolized here by the small letters m, I, and t. Two systems are said to be dimensionally similar or dimensionally scaled if for each element in one system there is a corresponding element in the second system and the ratios of the numerical magnitudes of corresponding elements are constant for all elements of the same dimensional type.

The object of this paper is, first, to present the theoretical and experimental basis of the design of such models, and, second, to describe their construction and operation. Experiments now under way on the models already built will yield material for other reports, which will be devoted to interpretation of the results in terms of oil-field behavior. So far, simple dimensional models of two kinds have been built and are being operated. These models represent different parts of an idealized oil field but obey the same underlying theory. The only fluids represented are oil and water, since certain questionable approximations are necessary for gas-liquid systems. General Theory Dimensional models have been used in other fields for a long time, and their theory is adequately given in the literature. 5 Here, it suffices to state that each physical element entering into a dynamic relation may be given a definite description in terms of three fundamental, but arbitrarily chosen, dimensions. These usually are mass, length, and time, symbolized here by the small letters m, I, and t. Two systems are said to be dimensionally similar or dimensionally scaled if for each element in one system there is a corresponding element in the second system and the ratios of the numerical magnitudes of corresponding elements are constant for all elements of the same dimensional type.

THE problem of establishing practical techniques for evaluating natural corundum ores arose from the desire to improve the existing purchase specifications for crystal corundum procured by the Federal Government for stockpiling. Such purchase specifications had been developed for a large number of products, including minerals and ores considered to be critical and strategic because of the country&apos;s dependence on foreign sources of supply. It will be apparent to anyone considering the subject of purchase specifications that the determination of whether or not a submittal meets the specifications is a prime consideration. Consequently satisfactory specifications for minerals should not only incorporate physical, chemical, and mineralogical requirements that are practical but should also establish the means by which both buyer and seller can be assured that materials meet stated requirements.

measurements of the anisotropy in Young&apos;s modulus produced in copper by rolling 95 pct reduction in thickness below room temperature have been carried out in order to study the dependence of the texture on rolling temperature. The results clearly show the transition from a copper-type texture to a brass-type texture as the temperature of rolling is lowered. The intermediate textures observed can be described very well as a simple mixture of the two terminal textures. These results cormbined with other texture measurements make possible afresh review of the experimental facts velating to rolling textures in fee metals and, as a consequence, a critical examination of the current theories is presented. PREVIOUS experiments have shown that the transition from the copper- to the brass-type rolling texture is clearly displayed and can be quantitatively analyzed by measurements of the anisotropy of Young&apos;s modulus.&apos; Application of this method to the Cu-Zn alloy system showed that the description of the texture transition as a gradual rotation of the grains from the orientation characteristic of the copper texture to the {110}(112) texture of brass2 was inconsistent with the data. Instead, the data suggested that the texture within the transition region could be described as a simple mixture of the two terminal textures.5 Unfortunately, it was difficult to establish this point conclusively because of the inadequacy of corrections for the composition dependence of the single-crystal elastic constants. Since a rigorous establishment of the nature of this texture transition is essential to our understanding of the formation of rolling textures in fee metals, it is clearly important to undertake an investigation in which the composition dependence of the elastic constants would not enter. A suitable composition-independent texture transition is provided by the well-established variation in the rolling texture of copper with rolling temperature. This temperature-dependent texture transformation has been studied by smallman&apos; in several fee alloys and by Müller5 and others"&apos; in copper. They observed that the texture characteristic of copper rolled at room temperature changed to a brass-type texture when the rolling temperature was lowered to 77°K. Although it is not possible to decide unequivocally from the published pole figures whether or not the 77°K rolling texture of copper is entirely of the brass type,&apos; this complication does not affect the main purpose of the present investigation. In addition to establishing the nature of the texture within the transition region, the modulus data should also provide a determination of the temperature at which the transition occurs as well as the temperature range over which the transition extends. This information when combined with the modulus data on Cu-Zn alloys would then provide a considerable body of new information on textures in fee metals. Since these modulus results and the data obtained from pole-figure studies must be internally consistent, it is appropriate to compile a brief summary of the experimental observations based on all available methods rather than on the pole-figure data alone as has been done in the past. The primary purpose of such a summary would be to yield a more precise definition of the experimental facts on the rolling textures of fee metals, and thus greatly facilitate our evaluation of various proposed theories in this field. The final section of this paper is devoted to this compilation of consistent, experimental facts and their application to the various theories. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Two 18-lb ingots of cathode copper of 99.99 pct purity were induction-melted under a nitrogen atmosphere in a graphite crucible and chill-cast into a steel mold. The ingots were repeatedly cold-rolled and annealed (I hr at 500°C) into slabs about 1 1/8 in. thick. Blocks 3 1/4 in. wide, 2 1/4 in. long, and 1.000 in. thick were machined from each slab. The rolling schedule used was the same as in the previous investigation1 and the final thickness of the sheet was 0.050 in. with a rolling reduction of thickness of 95 pct instead of 97.5 pct as in the previous work.&apos; The compositions and temperatures of the cold baths used for the low-temperature rolling were as shown in Table I. After each pass the rolled strip was immediately immersed in the cold bath for about 1 min or until the bubbling of the bath had subsided. The modulus data were taken within 2 hr after the rolled strip was warmed to room temperature for the first time, so that effects due to recrystallization were minimized. The modulus specimens were in the shape of flat bars, 3 in. long, 4 in. wide, and 0.050 in. thick, cut with their long dimensions oriented at 15-deg intervals between the rolling direction and the transverse direction. The values of Young&apos;s modulus were deduced from measurements of the frequency at which these long narrow bars were set into longitudinal, resonant vibration as previously described.9 To excite the mechanical vibrations in the specimen, an electromagnetic drive similar to that employed by Thompson and lass" was used. BETTER understanding of solid surfaces and their associated adsorption products is of both academic and practical value. The study of detergents and their behavior in cleaning surfaces is fundamentally related to the nature of the products adsorbed and their ability to compete for certain surfaces. Similarly in flotation, the nature of the adsorbate before and after adsorption is basic to clear understanding of the process. The recently developed pellet technique1,2 employing infrared spectroscopy provides a powerful tool for the study of solid surfaces. Absorption bands, which are infrared-active, may be observed for adsorbed products. Also any changes in the surface substrate that occur as a result of adsorption may be detected by means of differential spectra. In applying the pellet technique to solids of large surface area, French and his coworkers3 have surveyed the adsorption of organic flocculants on clay minerals, oleic acid on fluorite, and ammonia on cracking catalysts. Recent work on application of differential infrared spectroscopy to the study of solid surfaces&apos; has demonstrated that the difference between a sample and a reference can be obtained with double-beam instrumentation. In this way displacement of surface products, adsorption of new products, and differences in the substrate, if any, may be detected. Experimental Procedure: Potassium iodide pellets were used in this study, prepared from recrystallized analytical reagent grade KI. Grinding was carried out in a Fisher mechanical agate mortar. Two-gram plates containing the solid under study were pressed in a special evacuated die constructed in the laboratory at the University of Utah." Concentration depended on the solid in question. Zinc sulfide and willemite are sufficiently transpar- ent in the infrared region for concentrations as high as 20 mg of mineral in 2g of KI to be used. Zinc oxide is even more transparent, permitting concentrations as high as 60 mg in a 2-g plate. For non-differential operation, however, much lower concentrations (2 to 10mg/2g KI) had to be used. Spectra were obtained on a Per kin-Elmer 21 double-beam recording infrared spectrophotometer. A sodium chloride prism was used giving a spectral range of approximately 2 to 15 v wave length. For differential runs a resolution of 1000 was used and the scanning speed was controlled commensurate with instrument response. The response was checked continuously and each spectrum was repeated several times. For nondifferential runs a resolution of 927 was used. Zinc oxide used was analytical grade oxide fume. The zinc sulfide was precipitated from solution with analytical grade zinc sulfate and sodium sulfide. The precipitate was washed and centrifuged several times and dried. Before use the precipitate was washed in dilute HCl and then treated with saturated NH4Cl to remove any bulk oxides and sulfates. X-ray patterns of the precipitate were comparable to that of the natural mineral sphalerite. Serious floor heave of up to 2.4 m in a 2.4-m high mine entry was eliminated by applying the stress control method of mining, as a last resort, at the No. 5 coal mine of Jim Walter Resources, Inc., in the Black Warrior coal basin near Birmingham, Alabama. Underground observation of the first 3-room entry created using the stress control method is discussed here. The behavior of the test entry, which eliminated the heave problem, is analyzed in relation to similar studies conducted in a salt mine under similar ground conditions by utilizing finite element analysis.

Most previous work on sedimentation of coal1 and mineral2,3 suspensions has been conducted in graduated 1-liter glass cylinders of 6-cm diam. With this type of large container it is often difficult to see through the suspension and tedious to perform a large number of tests. Furthermore, the heavy glass walls and the graduation lines of glass cylinders cause internal and stray reflections, respectively. To obviate these difficulties, an Atlab Emulsion Viewer from Arthur H. Thomas Co. was adopted as an alternative apparatus. Equipment: The viewer,4 shown in Fig. 1, consists of: 1) a stainless steel frame rack holding 21 flat-bottom Nessler tubes or an ungraduated replica 1.64 cm ID and 1.80 cm OD, 2) a movable masked 150-w lumaline lamp behind the tubes, and 3) a scaled glass panel with 100 vertical divisions in front of the tubes. The tubes are snugly held by springs in slots formed by spacer bars, which also serve as shields to eliminate stray light. The lumaline lamp is mounted behind a slit in a movable housing so that it can be positioned behind the suspension to be examined. The lowest or 100-division line on the front glass plate is leveled with the upper side of the bottom of all tubes. The scaled portion of each tube, roughly 19 cm high and 40 ml in volume, is used to study coal and mineral suspensions.

The recent dedication of Magma Copper Co.&apos;s San Manuel, Ariz., electrolytic copper refinery and rod casting plant marks the culmination of a three year, $250 million expansion-modernization program. The new facilities will eventually permit an annual production of 200,000 tons of marketable copper for direct sale to fabricators. The Newmont Mining Corp. subsidiary will produce and market continuous cast 5/16 in. copper redraw rod, full plate cathode copper and sheared cathode plate under its own brand name. Among the four largest in the nation, the new refinery and plant, was built at a cost of $34 million and will be fully automated. In addition, all materials used in the plant will be recycled and no waste, discard or emissions will occur.
