Van Stone mine area is situated at the head of Onion Creek on the northwest flank of Gillette Mountain, Stevens County, Washington. The di strict was found during World War I, but the mine did not come into production until 1952. Production to the end of 1965 was 2,242,960 tons of ore that yielded 10,700 tons of lead concentrates and 120,000 tons of zinc concentrates. The area is part of the Selkirk Mountains Zinc-Lead Belt, or Kootenay Arc, extending from near Revelstoke, British Columbia, to Colville, Washington. A thick but incomplete section of Paleozoic marine formations occurs in the Kootenay Arc and is overlain by marine and continental Mesozoic formations. Both are invaded by Late Mesozoic-Tertiary batholiths. The belt is characterized by open complex folding and extensive high-angle and local thrust faulting. Principal ore deposits occur in the highly deformed carbonate rocks of Cambrian age-the Maitlen (Laib) and Metaline formations. The Van Stone mine occurs along a steeply S-shaped fold lying between the Kaniksu Batholith on the west and the Rogers Mountain Fault, a northeast-trending fault on the west flank of the Gillette Mountain Anticline, to the southeast. The fold is cut by northeasttrending faults containing notoriously irregular lamprophyric, diabasic, and pebble dikes. The host rocks, lower Paleozoic dolomites, are decolorized, silicified, and silicated in the mine area. Jasperoid and tremolite are the common alteration minerals. Other gangue minerals are barite, pyrite, brucite, calcite, and, near the batholith, pyrrhotite. Ore minerals are galena, jamesonite, and sphalerite. Ore minerals occur in bunches and pods intergrown with tremolite and jasperoid. Zinc is roughly eight times more abundant than lead. The highest ore outcrops at 3870 feet elevation, and an undeterminable portion has been removed by glacial scour. The lowest drill hole penetration has reached 3220 feet elevation. Oxidation ranges up to several hundred feet in depth and may be most closely related to pre-glacial groundwater circulation. The area of the mine was completely over-ridden by Pleistocene continental glaciers, and the present erosion surface is nearly continuously blanketed by up to 150 feet of glacial outwash.

In a recent communication14 we have reported on the kinetics of the reactions of zirconium with O2, N2 and H2 as a function of the time, temperature and pressure variables. A systematic study was made and the results correlated with fundamental theories of gas-metal reactions. This paper will present a similar study for titanium. Titanium and zirconium are members of the IV group of the periodic table and possess many similar physical and chemical properties as a result of their similar electronic configuration for the outer electrons. The two metals are relatively inert to both gas and liquid phase corrosion at room temperature. However, at moderate temperatures the metals become active and react readily with the common gases including O2, N2 and H2 which are of interest in this study. A study of the kinetics of these gas-metal reactions is of interest for three reasons: (1) to understand the rate of reaction of titanium and its role in the behavior of high temperature alloys; (2) to understand the practical difficulties of the reduction, refining and working of titanium; and (3) to correlate the data with fundamental theories of gas-metal reactions and crystal structure predictions. Literature Survey Several review papers8 and books4243 exist on the preparation and properties of titanium and its alloys. THE METAL Titanium has, at room temperature, a hexagonal lattice of the zinc type. Hagg19 gives a value of 2.953A for the (a) axis, a value of 4.729 for the (c) axis and a density of 4.427 at 20°C. Burgers and Jacobs6 have observed the transformation of the hexagonal to the body-centered cubic structure at 880°C and have established a value of 3.31 for the cube edge and a density of 4.31. TITANIUM-OXYGEN Carpenter and Reavell6 using a pressure change method have studied the reaction at temperatures of 742° and 1000°C and for a pressure of one-fifth of an atmosphere. The probabilities for reaction are calculated from kinetic theory and they report a value of 10-5 for O2 at 1000°C and 10-6 at 740°C. The titanium-oxygen system has been investigated by Ehrlich.10,11 Five phases are observed. Between (TiO2 and TiO1.90) an alpha-phase, consisting ofarutile lattice, is found. A beta-phase is observed between (TiO1.80 and TiO1.70). A gamma-phase is homogeneous between (TiO1.56 and TiO1.46) and has a structure of the corundum type. The delta-phase exists between TiO1.25 and TiO0.6 and has a sodium chloride structure. From TiO0.42 to Ti the metal structure is observed. The surface oxide films have been studied by Hickman and Gulbransen.20 The rutile structure is observed in the temperature range studied, 300 to 700°C. Three crystalline modifications of TiO2 exist: rutile and anatase which are tetragonal and brookite which has an orthorhombic structure. Anatase is reported36 to exist in two forms: I and II. Anatase II changes to anatase I at 642°C. Anatase I is stable up to 915°C where rutile becomes the stable modification. At 1300°C rutile transforms to brookite which melts at 1900°C. The monoxide, TiO, may be prepared from the dioxide by high temperature reduction with carbon or magnesium. Its melting point is 1750°C. TITANIUM-NITROGEN Carpenter and Reavell6 report that at 1000°C a linear rate law is observed. The probability of reaction is given as 10-8 at 1000°C. Fast12 has studied the solubility of nitrogen and its effect on the mechanical properties of the metal. The crystal structure of TiN has been shown by several workers2'21'44 to follow the sodium chloride structure. However, the calculated density is found to differ from the pycnometric value. This is studied by Brager3,4 in detail. He has suggested that the titanium sites in the lattice are only partially filled at low temperatures. As the temperature of preparation is raised the vacant sites become occupied which expands the lattice and increases the hardness and density. An (a) value of 4.22Å is given for room temperature. TITANIUM-HYDROGEN The solubility and the crystal structures observed in this system have been reviewed in a recent book by Smith.40

The mill is a departure from gravity concentration and has gained a reputation for the low initial cost of erection, extreme simplicity and the low cost of milling on the refractory character of the ore which is treated. The structure is of heavy timbers with board walls and corrugated roofing. The floors are concrete and the general layout is of the ground floor only. All the machines are driven by individual motors and the transmission usually found in such a plant is entirely absent. (Fig. 2.) ORE The ore from the Galena mine is sheared Wallace quartzite replaced with quartz, siderite, pyrite, sphalerite, gray copper (tetrahedrite) and very fine-grained argentiferous galena. Much of the silver is undoubtedly associated with the gray copper, the amount, however, apparently varies with different localities in the vein. An average assay of the ore is 6.0 per cent. lead, 1.3 per cent. zinc, 0.3 per cent. copper, 17.5 per cent. iron and 4.5 oz. silver. The concentrates produced are of an average 53 per cent. lead, 40 oz. silver, 8 per cent. zinc and 11 per cent. iron, while the tailings are 0.5 per cent. lead, 0.4 oz. silver. With the present market for zinc no attempt is made to produce a zinc concentrate.

LUTHER B. EAMES, Pueblo, Colo. (written discussion*).-In reading Mr. North's interesting paper, several points have been noted that appear to warrant discussion. With a feed all through 20 mesh, I feel inclined to question the use of steel balls as large as 2 in. in a tube mill. I have seen balls as small as-3/4 in. used for the dry grinding of cement clinker, and surely many more points of contact would result from smaller balls. This would seem to be desirable in a mill as short as 6 ft. The heavy load in the classifiers would also indicate a high proportion of returned pulp. I hope that some discussion by Mr. North -and others may develop this point. The flow sheet on page 1181 shows the solution returning from the dam valued at 40 c. per ton being added to the last decantation tank. Theoretically, this solution should not be added to that of a lower value. As I calculate it, if this solution were added to tank X the solution finally discharged from tank Z would be reduced in value by nearly 4 c. per ton.

Pyritic smelting, so-called, as practiced in the Black Hills is pyritic smelting only in the sense that Dr. John Percy uses the expression in his " Metallurgy of Silver," where he describes a process for smelting dry silver-ores in connection with iron pyrites, to form a regulus. The ores treated by this process in the Black Hills are very siliceous, averaging about 74 per cent. of silica, from 10 to 20 of iron oxide, 4 or 5 of alumina, and from 2 to 4 of lime. In 1889, while Dean of the South Dakota School of Mines, I took up the question of their smelting. There were neither copper- nor lead-ores in the Hills; hence pyrite and pyrrhotite, of which there are large deposits, were employed to form a regulus. This mixture of pyrite and pyrrhotite, besides being absolutely barren of gold and silver, carried an average of 30 per cent. of silica. The only basic material available as a flux for the great excess of silica in the ores and in the pyrite was a dolomitic limestone. Moreover, the local coke gave 24 per cent. of ash, 60 per cent. of which was silica—as unpromising a set of conditions as can well be imagined. We had before us the examples of Mr. W. Lawrence Austin, of this Institute, who had experimented at Toston, Montana,"

The literature on the beneficiation of serpentine asbestos ore states that the specific gravity of the rock containing fiber and the fiber itself is the same so that specific gravity cannot be used as a basis for separation. An investigation of particles of asbestos ore ranging in size from 4 mesh to 5 in. revealed that the fiber-bearing particles generally had a lower specific gravity compared to essentially barren particles. The difference in specific gravity was sufficient to make an effective gravity separation of ore particles and reject a low grade tailings product. The results of laboratory tests are described that lead to the running of pilot plant tests with 20-ton ore samples using a heavy media separator. These tests indicated that a large amount of low grade material could be rejected from the raw ore at a coarse size. Although the process used is a wet separation, it can be added to a conventional dry asbestos mill. A gravity preconcentration would allow the mining of lower grade ore, increase the life of the mine, increase the value of the feed to the fiber recovery section, and decrease maintenance costs by removal of low grade tailings early in the flowsheet.

Some fifty years ago, iron-ore was discovered near the town of Sheldon, Franklin County, Vermont, in a vein out-cropping on a knoll near Black Creek, which empties into the Missisquoi River a couple of miles away. A short time after this discovery, the owners, Mr. TV. 0. Gadcomb and Hon. Lawrence Brainerd, both of St. Albans, commenced mining (mostly by open cut), and also erected a Catalan forge, from which iron blooms were produced, most of which were worked into bar-iron and used in the neighborhood of the forge, while some were shipped by Lake Champlain to Troy, Albany and New York. But by reason of the lack of any railroad connections, and an insufficient demand for the blooms, this forge was subsequently abandoned, and the material used in its construction removed to other places. Mr. Keith, of Sheldon, used for many years a mixture of this ore with bog-ore from Swanton, in a charcoal blast-furnace, the product of which he consumed partly in his own foundry, shipping, however, a considerable amount to Troy and New York. Accurate data as to this enterprise are not at hand. The same vein has since been traced for some 20 miles, and some prospecting has been done 011 its outcrops at Berkshire, Enosburg and a few miles east of St. Albans; but the vein being small, only a few car-loads of ore were taken out from these places. The commencement of the St. Albans Iron and Steel Works in 1872, and the erection in 1877 of a ten-ton Siemens open-hearth furnace for the manufacture of steel rails, opened a new use for this ore. The furnace-charge consisted of pig-iron, old mils, steel scrap, and magnetic iron ore, added towards the close of the heat. The ore

Properly used, it increases production, cuts costs and has a number of important safety aspects all of which are the subject of this article.

Monotonic tension and controlled cyclic-strain tests have been conducted on an annealed steel at various strain rates and temperatures in the weep range. Evidence of a strain-induced precipitate reaction abozle 500°C was determined from pronounced cyclic-hardening effects, increase inflow stress, inter granular fracture, drastic decrease in low-cycle fatigue resistance, and loss in tensile fracture ductility, as well as through electron-microscopy examination. It was found that strain rate as well as temperature had a pronounced effect on these observations. A parameter of the form P = T(7.95 - log ip) was determined, which was directly related to the ductility, defined either as the true strain at fracture in the case of simple tension, or as 2N 1/2 ? E p in the case of cyclic plastic strain. A highly satisfactory comparison of the cyclic life as measured and as computed from the ductility predicted by this parameter was obtained for a range of temperatures from 400° to 650°C and for crosshead speeds of 0.002 to 0.2 in. per min. MANY metals subjected to sustained loading at elevated temperatures derive resistance to creep from solid-state reactions of various alloying constituents. These reactions can be many and varied, and occur as a consequence of time and temperature according to reaction-rate principles. Strong evidence exists that many of these reactions are influenced by plastic strain, the argument being put forth that dislocations act as sites for nucleation and growth for the new phase.' Many examples can be cited where plastic strain during transformation influences the structure, and as a consequence affects the properties.2 The low-alloy steels serve as particularly good examples for investigating the effect which aging reactions have on resulting properties. Alloying elements such as carbon and nitrogen, and carbide formers such as manganese, chromium, molybdenum, and so forth, can, by the particular aging reaction which occurs, produce strengthening effects at various temperatures, and so endow strength to the alloy over a broad range of temperatures. These effects have been systematically studied by Glen both during creep3 and for constant strain-rate tension testing.4,5 The work of Glen is of considerable interest in connection with the present study, particularly in regard to the effect of various alloying additions on the true stress-strain curve and on fracture ductility at various elevated temperatures. He has shown that strain-age hardening occurred during plastic straining, which was quite specific both to the temperature of the test and to the alloying element involved. When strain-age hardening was noted at a particular temperature, a .minimum in reduction of area was also obtained. Provided the temperature for the minimum reduction of area exceeded 300°C, all minimum ductility fractures were found to be inter-crystalline in nature. For carbon steels containing molybdenum, two minima in reduction of area were noted, one occurring at 200° to 250°C, the precise temperature depending on the percentage of molyb-

INTRODUCTION The Salvador Division of Codelco Chile is an important copper molybdenum production center, located 1,200 km north of Santiago and 124 km east of the Pacific Ocean, in the foothills of the Andes Range. El Salvador Mine produces by block caving 8,600,000 t of ore with a content of 1 .l0% Cu and 0.02% Mo, from a copper porphyry ore body. The geology of the ore body shows a great heterogeneity as to rocks, grade distribution, ore height and undercutting levels. This has resulted in a variety of designs for the productive units (blocks) and in the mineral handling systems. Up to now, 4 systems have been employed: grizzly and intermediate haulage; slusher drifts with intermediate ore pass and haulage; slusher drifts with scraper loading directly into trains; and, LHD. On the other hand there is a marked dispersion in the final results from each block mined out. We report here the conclusions reached after analyzing the data gathered on the mining of 163 depleted blocks, representing a total production of 102,000,000 t, with an undercut area of 340,000 sq m. The final results of each block, characterized in terms of tonnage and fine cop- per recovery, were studied as a function of a number of design, geological, and operational parameters. BASIC CONCEPTS Indices of Efficiency In order to evaluate the final result of each block, or group of blocks, the following indices of efficiency were defined : Tonnage Recovery (TR) . It is the ratio between the ore tonnage extracted and the in situ tonnage estimate for each block or group of blocks. Grade efficiency (E) . It is the ratio between the Cu mill feed grade and the in situ Cu grade estimate for each block or group of blocks. Grade efficiency is numerically equal to the ratio between fine copper recovery (FR) and tonnage recovery (TR) . Figure 1 shows the final results for 163 mined out blocks, in terms of tonnage and fine copper recovery. Different grade efficiencies are also indicated. The marked dispersion in the final results of mined out blocks must be stressed since it greatly incides in mine planning. It must be kept in mind that an eventual concentration of low overall efficiency in the blocks during a given period (e.g., one year) will make it necessary to bring into production new blocks over the standard development schedule. It is worth noting that the final results in the 163 mined out blocks corresponding to a production of 102,000,000 t of ore with a mill feed grade of 1.445% were obtained from an ore estimate of 93,000,000 t and a grade of 1.671% Cu, which represents 110% tonnage recovery and 86% grade efficiency. Parameters Studied The following parameters are considered in this study: Geological Parameters. These parameters depend exclusively on the geological and geotechnical features of the ore body. IN SITU GRADE: The initial estimate of the block grade. Four copper grade categories were considered : (a) lower than 1.3% ; (b) 1.3 to 1.6%; (c) 1.6 to 2.0%; (d) higher than 2.0%. The overall initial in situ estimate of the ore body was 1.6% Cu. IN SITU TONNAGE: Initial tonnage estimate of the block. Four categories are considered: (a) below 500,000 t; (b) 500,000 to 1,000,000 t (c) 1,000,000 to 1,500,000 t; (d) over 1,500,000 t. CONTACTS SLOPE: Since up to 4 rock types can be found in a block, resulting in a corresponding number of contacts, a horizontal con- tact was defined as that which forms an angle of less than 45" with the horizontal and a vertical contact that which forms an angle of more than 45" with the horizontal. GRADE DISTRIBUTION: As in rock types, horizontal and vertical grades were defined. ORE HEIGHT: The distance measured between the undercut level and the top of ore. Four categories are considered: (a) less than 60 m; (b) 60 to 100 m; (c) 100 to 150 m; (d)over 150 m

THE year 1923 was one of great importance in northern Louisiana and southern Arkansas, so far as the' development and expansion of previously discovered oil and gas fields were concerned. However, the search for new fields failed to produce a single discovery that led to important development during the period; in this respect, the year was one of discouragement to the prospector. During the winter and spring months, an especially active "wildcat" campaign was in. progress in southern Arkansas, and a large number of tests were drilled in northern. Louisiana but this activity subsided during the summer and fall. By the close of the year, only routine drilling was in effect in the fields; and only two new areas-Cotton Valley, in Webster Parish, and an area in Union Parish, La.-were showing any important activity because of favorable oil showings. Further drilling is contemplated in both of these areas, and the present feeling is that one or the other may produce the next oilfield in this territory. Briefly, the development of the Smackover field was the overshadowing event of the year. In. southern Arkansas, important development also took place in the East El Dorado, Stephens, and Irma fields; but all of these were relatively small. In northern Louisiana, many new oil wells were drilled in the Bellevue field, and many new gas wells in the Monroe field. In the old Caddo field, a large number of the deep Woodbine wells were plugged back to the "chalk rock," where a high gravity oil is obtained. In the other fields, only a few small wells were drilled. Therefore, Arkansas, furnished the real development of the year in this area. The production for the year showed a material increase over that of 1922, due, chiefly, to Smackover, and practically altogether to the Arkansas fields. In Louisiana, every field, except Caddo, Bellevue, and Elm Grove, showed slight to marked declines; while in Arkansas, El Dorado was the only field that declined throughout the year.

Selection of an alloy steel for a heat-treated article has been facilitated by methods for the calculation of harden-ability,' as-quenched hardness and tempered tensile strength.2 Ductility and toughness may also be estimated if the steel is completely hardened on quenching, 5,6 and the present study was carried out in order to develop a basis for estimating the Izod impact strength of partially hardened steel. The investigation was directed toward the prediction of Izod impact strength in steels of normal commercial quality without consideration of special compositions or heat-treatments that might produce abnormal brittleness. It was found that Izod impact strength of alloy steel is controlled by hardness, degree of hardening on quenching, and grain size. In finegrained steels the impact strength for any given degree of hardening is inversely proportional to the tempered Rockwell C hardness, and the relation of impact strength to hardness is lowered by incomplete hardening. Calculation of the tensile strength and impact strength of heat-treating steels has shown that, except at very high strengths, tensile strength is raised by alloys without loss of impact strength whereas the tensile strength gained by higher carbon contents tends to be accom- panied by a disproportionate loss of toughness. Plain carbon steels give relatively low and unpredictable impact strength. The calculation is sufficiently accurate to be helpful in the selection of alloy steel, and common grades of alloy steel have been evaluated with respect to combinations of tensile strength and impact strength attainable after heat-treatment in sections from I to. 4 in. in diameter. Procedure The study of the relation of hardness to impact strength was based on test data derived from 24 heats from four producers. The steels included the following SAE and AISI compositions: 1020, 1030, 1040, 1340, 3310, 33167 4320, 43.30, 4340, 8620, 8630, 8640, 8720, 8730, 8740, 931°, 9317, 9440, 9917 and three high-alloy chromium-nickel-molybdenum steels. As far as is known, the steels tested were of normal commercial quality. They were supplied in 4-in. sections, which were forged to smaller sizes, prenormalized, and machined to final dimensions. Heat-treatment was carried out by heating to the usual austenitizing temperature for the grade of steel, holding for one hour per inch of thickness and quenching in still oil at room temperature. Previous work had indicated that this quenching treatment approximates a severity of H = 0.3; The bars were tempered as follows: 34 in., I in., and 1% in., 2 hr; 235 in., 3 hr; 4 in., ; hr. The effect of cold-working upon electrical conductivity of copper and of copper alloys appears not to be generally known in detail. Although several papers on the subject have been presented, showing variable effects according to alloy composition, it is often assumed that the 2 to 3 per cent lowering of the conductivity of ordinary tough-pitch copper by severe cold-working is typical for copper alloys. Because of this situation it was decided to carry out the present work upon several types of copper, copper-zinc alloys over the commercial range of brasses, other binary alloys, and numerous age-hardening alloys in the quenched, and quenched and aged conditions. The large number of alloys investigated made it impossible to study every one in the detail it may have merited. Inasmuch as several interesting points that could not be satisfactorily explained came to light, further work is contemplated by the authors. It is usually considered that the normal effect of cold-work on ductile metals and unordered alloys is to decrease conductivity slightly. In alloys that are in the ordered state, as annealed or otherwise heat-treated, cold--working tends to disorder the structure, resulting in very marked lowering of conductivity. The random state of atomic arrangement produces lower con- ductivity than the ordered state for the same composition.1 Previous Work Previous work in the authors' laboratory has shown the electrical conductivity of several copper alloys to be decreased by greater amounts than might have been expected, in view of the general knowledge on the subject, when cold-worked. Guillet and Ballay2 investigated the influence of cold-work upon the resistivity of several metals and alloys, including copper and some copper alloys. The effect of cold-working upon electrical conductivity of copper and of copper alloys appears not to be generally known in detail. Although several papers on the subject have been presented, showing variable effects according to alloy composition, it is often assumed that the 2 to 3 per cent lowering of the conductivity of ordinary tough-pitch copper by severe cold-working is typical for copper alloys. Because of this situation it was decided to carry out the present work upon several types of copper, copper-zinc alloys over the commercial range of brasses, other binary alloys, and numerous age-hardening alloys in the quenched, and quenched and aged conditions. The large number of alloys investigated made it impossible to study every one in the detail it may have merited. Inasmuch as several interesting points that could not be satisfactorily explained came to light, further work is contemplated by the authors. It is usually considered that the normal effect of cold-work on ductile metals and unordered alloys is to decrease conductivity slightly. In alloys that are in the ordered state, as annealed or otherwise heat-treated, cold--working tends to disorder the structure, resulting in very marked lowering of conductivity. The random state of atomic arrangement produces lower con- ductivity than the ordered state for the same composition.1 Previous Work Previous work in the authors' laboratory has shown the electrical conductivity of several copper alloys to be decreased by greater amounts than might have been expected, in view of the general knowledge on the subject, when cold-worked. tested without knowing anything of their chemical composition. I had these pieces separately placed upon 10-inch bearings under a 7-gross ton lianlrner, a piece of 2½-inch round iron laid upon them as a fuller, and the hammer allotved to fall from 20 inches above the fuller, which, according to Haswell, gave a ldow of 67.75 gross tons. The pieces were then turned orcr, the fuller placed upon the convex surface, and the harnnler allowed to fall from 13 inches above the fuller, giving a blow of 58.46 gross tons. You will see that the rails do aot show ally bigrls of ruptnre, and their color at the points of torture prove them to have been absolutely cold when the test was made. I thirk these rails ought to be reasonably safe in the track. As you see by this piece of the head of one of these rails, I had it plarred, and then some teeth cut in it by a cold clrisel, and one-half of them pounded down with a hammer. The teeth of my rack did not break off. The analyses of these rails substquently made are: I. 11. Carbon,... 0.110 0.880 Silicon,..0.050 0.058 Phosphorus ,..0.086 0.082 Manganese,.. 0.042 0 840 In conclusion, I will say that Dr. Dudley's paper as a contribu tion to our knowledge of steel rails is valuable and interesting, but I protest against his conclusions king reoeived as manufacturing or comtnercial axioms. From its being presented in the form-of a report to the leading railroad of the country from one of its trusted officers, as well as from the tone of the concluding deductions, it is liable to be so received by railroad men. If any railroad com pany desires rails made under either of Dr. Dudley's formulas, and are willing to pay a price large enough to cover the loss in making them, dl and good; but so long as the rail makers are compelled to gwrrantee the wear of their rails for a given number of years, justice reqnires that. the composition of the steel from which these rails are made should be left to them. METAL-ORGANIC INNER COMPLEXES AN inner complex is a cyclic chemical structure containing an inorganic cation that is bound simultaneously to several atoms in a single organic molecule; on the one hand by means of ordinary valence bonds (electron exchange), on the other hand through the action of the electric field thus created, which satisfies the so-called secondary valences. The relative positions of the salt-forming and complex-forming groups are such that most frequently a four, five, or six-membered ring results through this double attachment of the cation.1-6 The formation of inner-complex ring systems depends not only upon the nature and suitable position of the salt-forming and complex-forming groups for ring closure, but, to a great extent, also on the nature of the metallic cation entering the reaction. This selective character of chelate-forming organic compounds is one of their most interesting and most valuable properties. As a matter of fact, the largest number of their practical applications is based upon their specificity. 4,1-13 Once a chelate compound is formed, its character is definitely "organic" in nature. In other words, its properties are conditioned to a much larger degree by the carbon chains or rings than by the metallic atom. Many inner complexes are soluble in nonpolar solvents such as benzene, paraffin oil or carbon tetrachloride, while the chelate-forming reagent before closure of the metal-organic ring is water soluble. It is obvious that such particular properties as those indicated above can be utilized whenever specificity and practically complete binding of inorganic ions into an undissociable complex are required.
