The ultimate test of a business strategy is whether it achieves the owner's objectives. Most shareholders are interested in growth and profits, and share values on stock exchanges are very often closely correlated with profit growth and profitability measured as return on equity (ROE). Strategic management, then, involves managing investments or resource allocations to optimize long-term growth and real return on equity, within reasonable limits of risk. Figure 1 shows a plot of the five year, weighted average ROE of a number of communications companies against their stock market valuations in 1983, measured as a ratio of market value to book value. The principal explanation of the differences in the relative valuations of the individual stocks is historical ROE, weighted toward the most recent years. Further analysis demonstrates the added importance of growth in explaining the differences in stock market to book ratios. [ ] Research conducted by Booz Allen and others in recent years suggests that the relationships between ROE and market to book multiples hold true in industry after industry. Furthermore, we have found that in assessing business strategies for companies in these industries, the analyses should focus on whether proposed strategies are likely to lead to consistent long-term growth in real ROE, without excessive leverage. Our research also reveals, however, that these approaches to strategy assessment are not consistently applicable in the natural resource extractive industries. Figure 2 shows a similar comparison of market to book values against five year average ROE for a group of nine mining companies in 1983. Market value of the shares shows little correlation with ROE. For the first time in several years, Chile is again opening its doors to foreign investment. In its new investment code, the Chilean government has announced its willingness to become a partner in joint Chilean-foreign projects for a number of government-controlled porphyry copper deposits at the developed, semi-developed, or prospect stage; and, that it will allow privately owned deposits or deposits discovered by new exploration to be developed with up to 100% foreign ownership. Three deposits of particular interest are: El Abra, with at least 300 million mt of +100% Cu; Los Pelambres, with at least 428 million mt of 0.78% Cu and 0.03% Mo; and Andacollo, with 350 million mt of 0.70% Cu and 0.015% Mo. (El Abra is almost entirely government- controlled; but both Los Pelambres and Andacollo are mostly under private ownership.)

RECENTLY, we were asked to name the greatest contribution to progress in mining technology during the past 25 years. Immediately, the introduction of the pneumatic hammer for making blastholes came to mind because it can be credited with speeding the excavation of rock and the elimination of hand drilling. Possibly this answer was so spontaneous because we were working on this "drilling issue" Of MINING ENGINEERING. Present drilling tools have devel¬oped so rapidly, that a great deal of engineering is. required in the selection of bits, steel, and machines for the drilling conditions at each mine. Formerly a modicum of engineering was utilized in selection of equipment for it was purchased from manufacturer preference. With the development of alloy drill steels, tungsten-carbide bits, throwaway bits, and the jackleg drill, mining companies began doing more experimental work before making selections. It is unfortunately true, that each operator must begin at the beginning by doing his own test work before choosing his drilling method, and tools. Some of this work has been done very well-under controlled conditions and obtaining proper data on the variables. Such data should be accumulated from the various mines, tabulated, and published. Such a volume would be of tremendous help to the small operator in selecting equipment and would permit the research departments of the larger companies to formulate some measure of rock drillability and to undertake more specialized research on the different phases of drilling.

(Butte Meeting, August, 1913.) FEW authors of treatises and papers on engineering subjects have . given adequate attention to topographic maps.. The statement applies especially to mining engineering in all branches. Even those who have discussed such maps have treated the subject only in a general way. Therefore it is proposed to outline in this paper a few of the uncommon, yet important relationships which topographic maps and their by-product, structure-contour maps, have to modern methods of mining investigation and development when the facts depicted on such maps are properly interpreted. Topography, as suggested by the etymology of the word, menus a detailed description of particular places. Written descriptions have been found less effective than the pictorial representations, therefore attempts have been made in various ways to picture the surface features of places. Lines and shading have been used, hachures drawn, and, finally, the contour topographic map. To a large extent this style of snap is the result of the demands of engineers. It is designed to meet their needs far more than those of the man untrained in engineering. In fact, the average man obtains a better idea of the topography of an area from the hachure system than from contour maps. . Since the maps. have been made chiefly for the use of the engineer, they ought to meet his demands on the one hand, and, on the other, should be used by him to the fullest extent. Such maps, when properly made, accurately portray a portion of the earth's surface and should present the topography better than a personal examination of the area without a map could present it, because the person making such examination views only a limited portion of the surface at a time, and estimates distances only roughly with his eye. Let the engineer consider carefully the fact that in many instances the topographic map is superior to a personal examination of the surface features of a property because the map is based on careful instrumental measurements, whereas the eye gives imperfect data because it can be used merely for the estimation and

THERE is very little useful material in the litera-ture on the construction of manometers, so each experimenter must devise his own instrument. I have experimented for a number of years and have finally built one that is satisfactory. If we are to obtain accurate friction factors in mine-ventilation problems we must use accurate instruments. The most simple and convenient instrument for the mea-surement of small pressures is the inclined manometer or U-tube. By changing the angle at which the tube is set, any desired magnification of the pressure reading may be obtained. The first question in regard to the manometer is: What liquid shall be used? Alcohol, in my opinion, is the best. It does not cling to the glass and it does not attack the rubber tubes. The next problem is the setting of the instrument at the proper angle. One method is illustrated in Fig. 1. The base plate AC is made horizontal by a level bubble. The plate AB, which carries the U-tube, is hinged at A. The angle z which AB makes with the horizontal may be made any value by pinning the end B at the calculated position on the arm CD. Such an instrument may be designed to read directly in inches of water if a liquid of constant specific gravity is used. If the specific gravity varies, a calculation is necessary to convert the reading into inches of water.

The electromotive force between pure magnesium and Mg-Zn alloys in a fused KC1-LiCl-MgC12 cell was measured over the temperature range 360° to 730°C and for alloy compositions of 0.052 to 0.635 atom fraction magnesium. The calculated activity coefficients of magnesium in the liquid alloys may he represented by the relation These data and the phase diagram were employed in calculating the standard free energy of formation for the compounds MgZn, MgZn2, and MgZn2, In the temperature range from 25° to 590°C the relation ZINC-rich magnesium alloys have been shown to be very effective in reducing various solute chlorides or oxides from fused salts such as KC1-LiC1 eutectic. Such reactions are of interest in the developinent of pyrometallurgical methods for reprocessing nuclear reactor fuels.' As the conceniration of the magnesium is increased beyond 5 to 10 wt pct the extent to which solutes, such as yttrium, lanthanum, cerium, and other rare earths, can be reduced or removed from the salt decreases. This effect is due to the resulting change in the activity of the solutes in the Zn-Mg alloy as well as the change in the activity of both the zinc and mag- nesium. The purpose of the present investigation was to determine the thermodynamic properties of the Zn-Mg system which, in addition to yielding information on the alloying behavior of these two elements, would permit a more quantitative understanding of the above reactions. Since this investigation was initiated several publications have appeared in the literature giving results on the thermodynamic properties for the liquid alloys of this system. 2-4 Kozuka, Moriyama, and Kushima3 measured the vapor pressure of zinc over four different alloy compositions by a carrier-gas technique. Eremenko and Tukashenko2 and Terpilowski4 measured the electromotive force between pure magnesium and various alloys in a fused salt cell. Earlier work has been summarized by Hultgren, Orr, Anderson, and Kelley.5 In the present investigation electromotive-force measurements were made on a cell of the type The temperature range covered for the lower-melting alloys was roughly 375° to 730°C. These data were employed in calculating the thermodynamic properties for the liquid alloys and in conjunction with the phase diagram,' reproduced in Fig. 1, were used in calculating the standard free energy of formation of the compounds MgZn, MgZn2, and Mg2 Zn11. The results obtained are compared with available data from the literature. MATERIALS AND EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Materials employed were: Bunker Hill slab zinc, 99.99 pct pure; Ames Laboratory magnesium containing 13 ppm N, 195 ppm C, and trace amounts of calcium, copper, nickel, and silicon; reagent grade KC1, LiC1; and high-purity MgC12 obtained from Dow Chemical Co. The electrolyte consisting of KC1-LiCl eutectic (44.4 wt pct LiC1) to which was added 15 wt pct MgCl2, was dried in a quartz tube by heating to 340° C under vacuum for a period of 4 to 5 hr, and then passing HC1 through the salt as the temperature was slowly raised to above the melting point of the salt. After about 3 hr the HC1 was shut off and the system flushed with argon and then vacuum applied for 1 hr. THE strip industry made rapid strides in regard to both width and gage until about 1922, when the maximum width was about 20 in. In the hot mills, strips of thin gages in wide widths could be pro-duced, but only at a sacrifice of length of coil, con-siderable increase in power, and decreased tonnage out-put on the min. Hot mills, like the Bray sheet mill and the modern strip and skelp mills, demonstrated that . wider strip could readily be rolled, if such a product was desired. The strip manufacturers were really limited in width, not by the hot strip, but by the cold rolling of wide strip. This factor was roll pressure. The diameter of rolls increased as the width of strip increased. For cold rolling strip 20 in. wide, cold rolls were approximately 20 in. diameter. As the rolls became larger, the arc of contact between the rolls and the strip increased approximately, according to the formula, b=\/Rd where b = the width of contact R = roll radius d = total reduction Now the crushing strength of cold steel of low carbon varies from 70,000 to 100,000 lb. per sq. in. With each succeeding pass the crushing strength increases and may approach 250,000 lb., according to the total reduction. The total reduction in cold rolling of low-carbon steel will range from 40 to 70 per cent of the original thickness, usually in about three or four passes. On this basis, assuming a reduction of 20 per cent in one pass, the crushing strength of steel assumed at 120,000 lb., we have a total pressure between rolls, which (assuming that the rolls do not deform) equals: Roll Strip Strip Diameter, Width, Thickness, In. In other words, the pressure per inch of width increased from 38,000 to 78,000 lb. for the same per-centage of reduction.

OVER a period of years the writer has presented a number of studies1 on various aspects of proration, in a progressive attempt to analyze critically and constructively the economic complexities of this interesting institu-tion, which in a decade has revolutionized the economics of oil production in the United States. In the course of the investigations leading to these papers, the changing nature of proration and the principles under-lying its evolution have gradually become clear, so that it is now possible to depart from the analytical method and to construct a synthesis of the steps that, if furthered by the industry, should carry proration past the economic hazards that still surround it to the goal of maximizing the value of the petroleum resource to the industry and the public alike. NATURE OF PRORATION Proration literally means the allocation of demand among competing producers on a pro rata basis, but the term now carries a much broader significance for it is employed to describe the entire process by which the production of crude oil in the United States is regulated. There is naturally much confusion of thought on the subject, for proration is an evolving system of control based upon principles of conservation and equity and embracing a body of practices that are tending to adjust themselves to the needs of the situation but are subjected to varying and divergent influences in the process. As it is now constituted, proration is a planned production measure designed to prevent waste, insure ratable takings, and balance supply and demand. The procedure is administered by State regulatory bodies through use of the police power of the States under authority of State conservation laws; the practice is supported by a considerable degree of voluntary conformance on the part of operators; and the Federal Government has accorded its cooperation by providing advisory quotas, circumscribing imports, checking movements of hot

PRACTICALLY all underground work on the Minnesota iron ranges is done by miners working on a so-called contract wage system. This system, while it has certain advantages over the straight day's pay or company-account method of wage payment, has serious and vital defects. In view of the scarcity and demands of labor, it is important that employers of labor scrutinize their systems of wage payments carefully, not only to save losses and trouble, due to labor disturbances, but also to secure the greatest efficiency of their workmen and reduce their operating costs. It is admitted that an adequate, just, and equitable wage is the prime factor in bringing about these benefits. The wage of labor and its method of application and payment have been, and always will be, the main factors in the unrest and dissatisfaction of labor. Not only does labor want and need an adequate wage, assuming that work is adequately performed, but it wants and is entitled to a just and equitable wage. Labor must have respect for the fairness of the wage and for the fairness of the management in the application of the wage. It is conceded that the Minnesota iron miners are now, and have been, in the main paid adequately, but the inherent defects of the so-called contract system prevent any just or equitable application of this wage to the various units of the labor body. The defects of the contract system, with its obvious inequalities, favoritisms, and injustices, are cancers in the brain of labor. Every thinking miner realizes these defects and knows just what they are; the unthinking do not realize the details of the subject, but each month they are forcibly reminded of these defects through the pay envelope. As practiced on the iron ranges, however, the so-called." contract" system is not a contract and the name is a misnomer. No true contractual obligation exists.

SUMMARY A detailed analysis of nickel, copper, and cobalt recovery from manganese nodules shows simple rates of return of 9-15% in 1985. A sulfur dioxide roast process yields a slightly better return than an ammonia leach technique. Nodule tonnage predictions tend to be over-optimistic and more conservative forecasts show that market penetrations are only significant for cobalt and manganese. However, cobalt prices are unlikely to fall to the level of nickel. Between now and 1985, cobalt is expected to be in balanced to tight availability. INTRODUCTION Deep-ocean manganese nodules are one- to two-inch concretions which cover 2040% of large areas of the ocean bottom. Commercial targets far these black, potato-like nodules are located in the North Pacific at water depths of 5,000-6,000 m. in a belt roughly midway between Hawaii and Mexico. However, good grade nodules are not solely limited to this belt as areas southwest and northwest of Hawaii, as well as in the Indian Ocean, contain concentrations of acceptable grade manganese nodules. Some 90% of the nodules are found half-buried on the deep ocean bottom. A siliceous-ooze host soil combined with low sedimentation rates, certain ocean currents, and possible geo- thermal effects are favorable factors far nodule formation. In the 1970’s, several plants have been built and others are in the design stage which use solvent extraction for recovery of copper from acid leach solutions. Other plants are presently being built for the recovery of nickel and cobalt from laterite ores by prereduction and ammonia leaching. A review will be given on the materials of construction for these leaching and solvent extraction processes. Many plants have factors in common which permit selection with a greater degree of accuracy. Based on pilot plant corrosion data, effective use of materials of construction includes proper selection of materials, substitution of lower cost plastics for alloys, and selection of materials resistant against chloride stress corrosion cracking.

As the reservoir rises behind an arch dam, it presses the arch into the canyon walls and valley floor. To compute the stresses, deflections, and arch reactions, it is necessary to know how much the rock deforms under the combined loads of gravity, temperature, and water. Under sustained loading for a period of time, the rock continues to deform or "creep" slightly, causing changes in the stresses and shape of the arch. Under reduced loading, the elastic arch tends to resume its unstrained position and it is important to know that the rock will follow it and maintain tight contact along the abutment. It is, therefore, important to know the "set" characteristic of the rock. Past attempts to define load-deformation properties of rock, including creep and set, have largely l been limited to laboratory test of intact cores and in-situ jacking test utilizing bearing plates 2 to 3 ft in diam. In both cases, a uniaxial load has been applied to a volume of rock too small to fully reflect the influence of cracks, joint systems, foliation, and other inherent weaknesses within the rock mass. This chapter describes a large radial jacking test which more nearly duplicates the action of an arch dam by penetrating the load deep into the rock mass, bringing into play more of the factors which contribute to prototype deformation. Results obtained from the large radial test are compared with those from smaller uniaxial test. On June 15, Dr. E. E. Southard gave the following report to the Advisory Committee on Industrial Mental Hygiene of the. Engineering Foundation. Psychiatric social work, a new specialty in social work, was the topic of several section meetings (500-600 in attendance) at the National Conference for Social Work, held at Atlantic City, June 1-6. The new specialty was stated, by Dr. R. C. Cabot, to be the greatest single advance in medical social work since its establishment. Reports from three schools (Smith, New York, Philadelphia) indicate a good production rate of personnel, probably at least one hundred a; year, chiefly to be absorbed by hospitals, unless industrial psychiatry steps into the field. No detailed public announcements concerning industrial psychiatry were made; but private discussions elicited approval only for the program. Indications are that many non-medical social workers will decide to get additional training to go into medical social work and then to specialize in psychiatric social work and that many medical social workers will desire to specialize in psychiatric social work, with a view partly to entering reconstruction work, partly to entering industrial psychiatry. Suggestion has been made that psychiatric social workers may go into some kinds of, employment management and may look for special courses to that end. Evidence. has been brought that certain "compensated" psychopathic employees have been good (even very good) workmen: emphasis should be laid on this point to show the constructive aspect of industrial psychiatry:

The Institute maintains for the use of members (and especially for the use of out-of-town members) a reading and writing room, where all usual office facilities are available, including telephone, telegraph, receipt, forwarding and care of mail and express packages, etc. A file of current magazines is also maintained in this room, and the Institute's staff will lend its best efforts to serving the members in connection therewith. The Institute also maintains for the use of its members free dressing rooms, library research department, etc. Attention is called to these facilities at the present time in the belief. that they may be especially useful to out-of-town members in connection with the Meeting.

Senator Henry M. Jackson t D. Wash.) recently tossed a live grenade into the hardrock mining industry with proposed legislation to change provisions of the law governing Federally owned mineral values. Title Two of the measure would place hardrock mining agreements on a leasing basis similar to that which has applied to oil and gas since 1920. Known as the "Public Domain Lands Organic Act 01 1971" or S.921, the bill would monitor exploration by heavy machinery which ran destroy fragile ecology without any requirement for restoration or rehabilitation." Jackson said. Abandoned mining claims, lie continued, dot the public domain, "casting clouds upon the title to property which belongs to all the people.” and a minerals leasing system is "the most practical way of achieving the proper balance."

Binary alloys of compositions intermediate between solid-solubility limits and eutectic compositions have been completely separated into primary phases and eutectic by freezing unidirec-tionally at very slow rates (10-6 to 10-5 cm per sec). The alloys examined were Pb-1 wt pct Ag, Al-20 wt pct Cu, and Al-42 wt pct Cu. The compositions and proportions were close to those expected from the phase diagrams and provided information about the solid/liquid interface at certain free zing rates. DURING the directional freezing of an alloy the solute distribution is controlled by the efficiency of mixing in the liquid,'" whereas diffusion in the solid state is of negligible importance. It is known3 that mixing by convection is very efficient, but complete segregation is only achieved at very slow freezing rates4-6 or with forced stirring in the liquid. ' Yue9 and Yue and clark10 have previously illus- trated partial separation of primary phases in alloys close to eutectic compositions. In the present work, taking binary alloys of compositions intermediate between the limits of solid solubility and eutectic compositions, it has been possible to achieve complete separation of the primary phases by directional freezing at very slow rates. METHODS AND RESULTS The alloys concerned were Pb-1 wt pct Ag, A1-20 wt pct Cu, and A1-42 wt pct Cu. As may be seen from the relevant diagrams,11 these alloys should segregate into approximately equal proportions of primary solid solutions and alloy of eutectic compositions. Specimens, -12 cm long and 1 cm wide, were frozen in horizontal tubes by withdrawal from a furnace. The lead alloy, prepared from materials of 99.999 pct purity, was sealed into evacuated Pyrex tubes and the aluminum alloy of similar purity contained in graphite boats under vacuum. The molten alloys were seeded with some 3 cm of solid to prevent irregular initial freezing rates and the last portions to freeze were ignored. At the slow freezing

This paper deals with the responsibilities of an operating geologists and the relationship of operations to exploration. It should be of interest to those soon to enter the profession, those new to mining geology and as a review to more experienced geologists. Subjects discussed include detailed geologic mapping, sampling, core logging, assaying, selection of proper map scale, posting geological and assay data, section preparation, identification of ore controls, delineation of development drill targets and geologic hazards, models and the very important topic of salesmanship. Methods and ideas, proven valid in vein, pyrometasomatic replacement and porphyry copper deposits are presented. Hopefully, these will smooth the path for new members of our profession.

W. J. McGuire, et al, are to be commended for their undertaking of a mathematical solution of a very difficult problem. Unfortunately, however, a mathematical approach requires the application of several assumptions. These assumptions appear to be unrealistic and lead to answers which do not describe what actually happens when hydraulically fracturing oil and gas wells. Considering laboratory confirmation of breakdown phenomena, the authors appear to have tested their theories only on cement specimens and on samples of Austin limestone, much too small to provide any fracture system. This work resulted in the formation of vertical fractures. If the authors had tried similar experiments on thick walled cylinders made from almost any sandstone cores, they would have found that, using crude oil as the breakdown fluid, horizontal fractures would almost always occur, and at pressures much lower than any calculated. They would also find that by confining the fluid to within the bore (using oil base mud for example) on similar samples, the pressures required to burst the cylinders would be considerably higher and most of the fractures would be vertical. This breakdown pressure behavior has been duplicated in wells in Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas and in Wyoming. Considering field data the phenomena of different breakdown pressures for different breakdown techniques can be further illustrated. Most production and service personnel will agree that a breakdown can be more easily obtained if injection into a formation can be established prior to the occurrence of the breakdown. This is true whether the formation being treated is completed as open hole or as a perforated interval. This is clearly illustrated by a Lakota well in Wyoming, completed open hole at a total depth of 7,358 ft. An attempt to vertically fracture this well failed when a bottom hole pressure of 10,326 psi was insufficient to break down the formation. A non-penetrating type fluid (oil base mud) was in the well at the time the breakdown was tried." The oil base mud was then cleaned out of the well and replaced by a 30" API gravity crude oil. With this oil in the hole the formation breakdown was easily accomplished at a bottom hole pressure of 3,607 psi. This large difference in fracture pressures would be impossible according to the theories presented by McGuire, et al. The authors have used as an example the breakdown pressures experienced when acidizing Permian Basin wells. During acid treatments of limestone and dolomite the "breakdown" (drop-off in pressure) seldom occurs until some injection of acid has been accomplished. In these cases the breakdown is most likely to result from the chemical reaction of acid and rock in already existing vugs and fractures rather than from making a new fracture by hydraulic pressure. If this is true, then results in the Permian basin should not be used to validate the authors' calculations. *** AUTHORS' REPLY to ROSCOE C. CLARK and HENRY F. COFFER The purpose of our laboratory experiments in which thick-walled rock cylinders were hydraulically fractured was to determine the validity of the "thick pipe" formula for brittle materials, and not to predict nor demonstrate directly the orientation of field fractures. Our conclusions concerning field results resulted from calculations involving the "thick pipe" relationship as well as considerations of overburden stresses, rock strengths, and the geometry and dimensions of the field system. Clark suggests that had the models been more porous or contained weak bedding planes, horizontal fracturing would have occurred. This is undoubtedly true provided external stresses similar to those in the earth's crust are nor imposed. However, if we were going to design experiments to represent directly the field case we would impose the proper stresses on the models. It is generally recognized that the vertical compressive stress in the earth's crust arising from the weight of the overburden is approximately 1 psi/ft of depth. Then, as an example, even though a horizontal bedding plane has zero strength, the formation cannot be separated to form a horizontal fracture unless the hydraulic pressure exceeds the stress due to overburden. And in those cases in which the stress resisting vertical fracturing is significantly less than that resisting horizontal fracturing, vertical fractures should result, notwithstanding horizontal plane weaknesses. We agree that breakdown pressure will be less if the fracturing fluid penetrates the formation. In Appendix HI of our paper it is shown that leak-off reduces the pressure necessary to initiate either a horizontal or vertical fracture. It would be difficult to attempt to

This paper presents a suitable method for predicting gas-free oil viscosities at temperatures up to 500F knowing only the API gravity of the oil at 60F and the viscosity of the oil measured at any relatively low temperature. The API pravity and the one viscosity value are used as parameters to determine the slope of a straight line on the ASTM slanaord viscosity-temperature chart. Then, knowing the slope of the line and one point on the line, the vrscosities at higher temperatures can be determined. The line slope correlations were developed at I00 and 210F since viscosity data are frequently measured at these temperatures. A procedure is given for predicting line slopes from measurements at other tetnperatures. A nomogram is furnished for solving the relationship. The correlation has been evaluated at temperatures up to 5OOF for oils varyzng in gravity from 10 to 33 " API. The correiution is applicable only to Newtonian fluids. Comparison at 500F of true viscosities and those predicted from values at 100F shows an average deviation of 3.0 per cent (maximum deviation of 6.0 per cent). Predictions from the values at 21 0F for the same oils how an average deviation of 1.5 per cent (maximum deviation of 3.4 per cent). INTRODUCTION Correlations have been developed by Beal' and by Chew and Connally' for predicting viscosities of gas-saturated oils at reservoir conditions. Each of these correlations requires a knowledge of the solution gas-oil ratio and the viscosity of the gas-free oil at the reservoir temperature. For temperatures below 350F, measurements of the gas-free oil viscosities can be made easily using commercially available equipment. In thermal recovery processes, however, reservoir temperatures well in excess of 350F are encountered. Viscosity measurements at such conditions are more difficult and time consuming and require modification of existing equipment or the construction of new equipment. Measurements are further complicated by the difficulty of handling highly viscous oils associated with thermal recovery processes. Therefore, it is desirable to have a correlation which allows accurate prediction of viscosities at high temperatures. A commonly used technique for predicting viscosities at high temperatures is to measure the viscosities at two lower temperatures, plot the values on ASTM standard viscosity-temperature charts and extrapolate to the temperatures desired. If either of the values is slightly in error, the extrapolated value can be significantly in error. To justify an extrapolation, three points are actually necessary. This procedure can consume much time, particularly with heavy oils. Considering the cost of viscosity measurements, it would be desirable to eliminate the need for direct measurements by having correlations which would allow viscosity predictions from other physical or chemical properties. Beal1 investigated the possibility of correlating viscosity with oil gravity at temperatures from 100 to 220F. While showing that a general relationship exists, he also found significant deviations. It is possible that correlations will be developed based on oil composition as more information becomes available. While not eliminating the need for viscosity rneasurements, the method presented herein requires that only one viscosity measurement be made. The API gravity must also be known. The theory is based on the fact that the viscosity of paraffins (high gravity) changes less with temperature than does the viscosity of naph-thenes or aromatics (low gravity). The gravity. therefore, is used as a parameter to determine the slope of a straight line on the ASTM standard viscosity-temperature charts. The correlation is applicable only to Newtonian oils, and deviations due to thermal decomposition and nonhomo-geneity cannot be predicted. Oils containing additives have not been evaluated. PROCEDURE Fifteen oils were used in developing the correlation; eight were crudes and seven were processed oils. Oil gravities varied from 9.9" API (naphthene base) to 32.7' API (paraffin base). The temperature range studied was 81 to 516F. Each oil used had a minimum of three viscosity measurements and each plotted essentially as a straight line on the ASTM charts. In all, 91 viscosity measurements were used in the correlation. Saybolt, rolling ball and capillary tube viscometers were used for the measurements. Viscosity data for Samples 1, 2, 4, 7, 10, 11 and 14 were obtained in Texaco, Inc. laboratories. The data for Samples 3, 5, 6, 8, 9, 12 and 15 were from Fortsch and Wilson,3 and data for Sample 13 were from Dean and Lane.' All data points used in the correlation are plotted in Fig. 1. The Minerals Beneficiation Division developed this symposium for presentation at the 1953 Los Angeles General Meeting to assist the many people who think that having a new plant necessitates a lot of trouble and dismay. The papers and free discussion from the floor give ways and means of approaching a new plant that will relieve the strain on the organization, if adequate attention is put on the program before work begins - that is if thought is given to the program itself, before tackling the actual mill design.
