A 3 ½ -mile asphalt mixed mat haulage road joins American Smelting & Refining Co.'s El Tiro copper pit northwest of Tucson and its Silver Bell mill. Two-axle trucks operate continuously over the road- way but the asphalt top shows none of the wash- board wear usually seen on dirt haulage roads during use by heavy vehicles. The following data cover construction of this road, and results of its use by Asarco and Isbell Construction Co., the road's builder.

In normal soils there are usually 10 to 50 parts of copper in every million parts of .soil. Only 0.2 to .5 pct of this copper can be found by any simple cold chemical attack. Now, with rubeanic mid reagent paper, a prospector or field geologist can detect as little us 4 ppm of readily available copper ill soil. This degree, of sensiticity is enough to determine the presence. of copper anamalous an as and, ecentually, to discouer copper mineralization. Circumstances determine whether it is better to make analyses in the field or in a permanent laboratory. The rubeanic acid test described in this article has been designed primarily for field use: it is simple and virtually foolproof, and it requires a minimum of field kit." This is by no means a quantitative test, but it is accurate enough to provide a valuable indicator of copper anomalous areas for both prospectors and field geologists. The easiest method for detecting metal deposits that do not produce visible float or stains is to make a simple chemical test for the metal in overlying soil, or in the silt of a stream that may have picked up metal farther upstream. In Brief: Testing for copper may be done easily by shaking a soil sample with strong acetic solution in a small test tube and pouring the mud into a small filter, the tip of which rests upon a strip of reagent paper impregnated with rubeanic acid (di-thio-oxamide). When copper is present—and only when it is—a blue spot develops. The more copper, the darker the spot. If the copper content is merely the small amount present everywhere, there is a pale blue or hardly visible spot; if it is abnormally high, the spot will be dark. There are, of course, intermediate cases where the experienced geochemist cannot tell offhand whether a medium-strength spot represents rich agricultural soil, weak copper mineralization, or distant rich copper mineralization. Reagents and material are inexpensive; the test may be readily done on the spot with a simple kit easy to pack and handle. Anyone interested in general problems of soil sampling as applied to prospecting may refer to an article recently presented to the AIME. In exploration work it is the contrast between the metal content of anomalous and background areas that is important; absolute values become of greater interest when an anomalous area is being investigated in detail. With specific reference to copper, it has been the authors' experience that the amounts of metal extracted from anomalous and normal soils with buffer solutions of decreasing pH show better contrast if an acid reagent is used. This contrast tends to increase with increasing acidity until 3 to 4 pH is reached. Using a short cold attack on unheated soil, it has been found that further increases in acidity do not produce better results, and only increase the hazards involved in carrying strong acids. An acidity of about pH 4 is satisfactory for direct determination of copper by dithizone. But dithizone itself introduces some problems: it must be made up fresh at frequent intervals, and with some soils, notably those with much ferric iron, oxidation mag take place before all the copper has reacted with the dithizone. Rubeanic acid keeps its strength unimpaired for long periods, is unaffected by oxidation, and is practically specific for copper at pH 4. Consequently it seems an ideal reagent to use in prospecting for copper. History and Background: Rubeanic acid (systematic name: dithio-oxamide (SC-NH2) has long been known as a spot test reagent for some heavy metals with which it gives a number of compounds. The much-heralded Deep Ruth operation of Kennecott Copper Corp., at Ruth, Nev., is scheduled to become a producer by 1957. Inaugurated as a project in 1951, production was originally scheduled to start in 1953, but excessive water hindered shaft sinking. A revised schedule called for output by 1955, but again plans had to be changed. This time the change was to permit mining of an orebody that would have otherwise been lost because of block caving methods planned for the main deposit. The new ore is within the cave limits of the larger orebody, above the first production level. Ore will start coming from this new source in 1956, a year ahead of the principal operation. (See NEWS, page 344.) There is little doubt that current economic conditions and unforeseen expenditures for early shaft development will make the Deep Ruth a high-cost producer. Yet, some of the drawbacks of the Kennecott operation may be mitigated by the possibility that additional exploration will increase the already assured 25 million tons of 0.83 pet copper ore. While Kennecott is missing out on the current high copper market and is thus left with a potentially narrowed profit, the predicted demand for copper has created an optimistic feeling. Its development is certain to enlarge known U. S. copper reserves and significantly extend the life of Kennecott's Nevada operations.

The writers have no new system and no new principle of taxation to propose. The general subject of taxation is as old as governments are and as familiar to taxpaying Americans as the general thesis on the inalienable rights of man. We believe, therefore, following the committee of the National Tax Association, that improvement in the general conditions of taxation, including mine taxation, maybe brought about mainly through a better adjustment of known and tried principles and methods of taxing to modern complex forms of property and income, and that not much is to be expected from abandonment of experience for new ways and means, methods and principles, should anything new be discovered, which in our opinion is very doubtful. The committee referred to has constructed the general framework of its Model System of State and Local Taxation1 on familiar forms of taxing, by eliminating some that ' have proved bad, suggesting improvements in others, and adopting the best, leaving plenty of room for the accommodation of the general plan to the varying conditions of taxation in the several states. Unfortunately, the taxation of mines is dismissed by the committee with the statement that the subject has been reassigned for further investigation and report by a special sub-committee, frankly recognizing that the peculiar difficulties of this phase of the subject require special study and investigation. Much may be hoped for from the labor of this sub-committee if the problem is approached from the viewpoint of recommendations already published. In this paper, the writers state their opinion on some of the broader aspects of mine taxation with too little attention to the grounds on which they rest. Contrary to inclination space requirements compel them to resort to summary statements without adequate discussion for a satisfactory presentation of the whole subject. All they can do is to qualify the witnesses and record the testimony. The effects of reactor irradiation on age hardening in a Cu-2 wt pct Be alloy have been investigated in two neutron-energy ranges. During some of the irradiations, specimens were exposed to high-energy fission neutrons which passed through a boron-10 shield; during other bombardments, the boron-10 was omitted and specimens were irradiated in a reactor thermal column, or the fuel configuration was modified to increase the thermal-neutron flux at a location in the core. Differences in length, X-ray diffraction angle, and hardness indicated that low-energy neutron irradiation made a small contribution to changes in the measured properties. The influence of defects generated by knock-om with less than the Brinkman critical energy or by prompt (n,y) recoil is suggested as the cause of this effect. EXPERIMENTS designed to test the effects of reactor irradiation on the properties of age-hardening alloys have to the present time employed fluxes un-differentiated according to neutron energy. Billing-ton and Siegell in 1950 were the first to perform such an experiment and to compare the results with those obtained by thermal aging. These authors concluded that precipitation in a Cu-2 wt pct Be alloy was not enhanced by the radiation. However, 4 years later, Murray and Taylor,2 working with specimens of the same Cu-2 wt pct Be alloy, reported that an increase in density, hardness, and resistivity which followed reactor irradiation resembled changes associated with thermal aging at about 100°C. (It should be noted that these authors reported that higher aging temperatures caused a decrease in resistivity.) cupp3 reported hardness results similar to those of Murray and Taylor. Koppenaal4 showed that irradiation-enhanced precipitation and irradiation defect hardening were not simply additive but that they acted separately in an irradiated alloy. Kernohan et a1.,5 working with Ni-Be, offered evidence that beryllium was removed from solid solution by reactor irradiation and suggested that the mechanism was one of increased diffusion through the use of vacancies in the structure. piercy6 also found that more precipitate particles were formed by fission-neutron irradiation of a Cu-Co alloy which contained a small amount of particles before irradiation. He proposed that the additional particles were caused by an appreciable amount of diffusion during the final cooling of displacement spikes. The retrogression of extant precipitate particles found by Murray and Taylor2 and Boltax7 as well as piercy6 indicated that nuclei were dissolved within a high-energy spike region and, upon resolidification of the perturbed volume, new nuclei precipitate and grow by enhanced diffusion. Bleiberg et al.' and Konobeevski et al.' explained phase changes obtained by irradiating fissionable alloys in terms of retrogression and re-precipitation in regions of high-energy spikes. Parsons and Balluffi10 used electron microscopy to verify that crystallization did indeed occur in displacement spikes which were formed in amorphous germanium by fast-neutron irradiation. The concept that low-energy neutron irradiation might cause structure-sensitive property changes in semiconductors by atomic recoil associated with the (n, y) reaction was first proposed by Schweinler" and walker." This thesis was tested by Cleland and crawford" and found to be valid. Coltman et al.14 exposed a variety of pure metals to thermal-neutron irradiation at cryogenic temperatures and attributed the resulting resistivity changes to the action of defects created by (n, y) recoil. The present work was undertaken to extend the concepts of Schweinler," walker," and Coltman et al.I4 to the case of an age-hardening alloy and to determine whether or not the action of defects produced by thermal-neutron irradiation would en-hance age hardening. The rapidly increasing use in coal mines of portable auxiliary fans, which are generally 'blowers" employed in connection with canvas tubing, raises questions concerning the hazards of such equipment, especially where the practices are opposed to established methods of ventilating face workings. Half a dozen or more coal-mine explosions and some fires have been attributed to the use of auxiliary fans; moreover, competent mining engineers have found many dangerous installations and methods of use-for example, intermittent running of the fans in gassy mines with consequent accumulations of firedamp at the faces. These facts have led the U. S. Bureau of Mines to issue this recommendation: "In the interest of safety, the Bureau of Mines, Department of Commerce, recommends that auxiliary fans or blowers should not be used in coal mines as a substitute for methods of regular and continuous coursing of the air to every face in the mine." The comparatively recent introduction of new types of mining machines, mechanical loaders, face conveyors, and slabbing machines has encouraged the trial of new systems of face mining, all of which have for their object the rapid advance of the faces. Although the latter has certain economic advantages, in gassy mines the rate at which gas is given off is generally found to increase in proportion to the speed of advance into new territory, which in turn increases the difficulties of efficient ventilation of the face workings. Some of the systems of advance mining being tried in connection with new mechanizing methods practically compel the use of blower fans and tubing, as single narrow places arc now driven 300 ft. or more without crosscuts. An investigation has been made of the multiplying factors for some of the more common alloying and deoxidizing elements for use in calculating hardenability of steel according to Grossmann's method. The factors for manganese, silicon, and aluminum that were reported in an earlier communication2 have been confirmed by microscopic determination of the half-martensite structure rather than on the basis of an empirically determined hardness corresponding to a half-martensite structure. Measurement of ideal critical diameter by microscopic examination was found to be necessary for other alloying elements, and multiplying factors for nickel, chromium, molybdenum, zirconium, vanadium, titanium, and boron have been determined. The nature and order of magnitude of the multiplying factors reflect the effect of the alloying elements on the structural character of the steel. Except for nickel and vanadium, the multiplying factors agree fairly well with previously published results. Good correlation between actual and calculated ideal critical diameters has been found in developing the multiplying factors and in checking the results against fairly simple steels. However, some discrepancies have suggested the need for a more thorough study of low-carbon and complex steels. Testing Procedure The investigation was conducted principally on steels made at the Union Car- bide and Carbon Research Laboratories, Inc., in high-frequency induction furnaces using Armco iron and standard alloying materials. However, a few open-hearth steels were used in establishing the effect of nickel, and the hardenability factor for boron was based primarily on open-hearth steels. All bars were normalized prior to the machining of Jominy hardenability specimens. The Jominy test was carried out under conditions standard for the test.3 Austenitizing temperatures judged to be appropriate for the compositions of the steels were used. Chemical analysis was determined on a sample taken adjacent to the Jominy specimen. Residual amounts of phosphorus, sulphur, nickel, chromium, molybdenum, and copper were determined on only one heat of each group made with the same materials during the same period. "Acid-soluble" aluminum and zirconium rather than total amounts were determined, as it is considered probable that the acid-soluble amount is more representative of the effective alloy. As tin was present to the extent of only 0.002 per cent, its effect was neglected. The method used to determine boron in the steels shown in Table 9* was developed by Galen Porter, Vincent Napoleon, and Thomas R. Cunningham, of the Union Carbide and Carbon Research Laboratories, Inc., and is a modification of J. Naftel's procedure for boron in soils

It scarcely is possible to read a new issue of any of the principal mining trade journals without noting some mention of a major new overseas mining venture with which one or more domestic companies are involved. These projects follow a fairly consistent pattern; most are large open pit mines with relatively low grade orebodies but huge reserves; the total price tag is in nine significant figures and half or more of the total cost is for infrastructure. West' notes that nearly $7 billion is being invested annually for new mining projects and the expansion of existing mining ventures in the free world. He anticipates that by 1975 such investments will reach the $10-11 billion annual figure and that in the period 1972-76 total capital requirements can be expected to aggregate around $45 billion. West estimates that 75% of the total capital will come from internally generated funds. Conceivably, a substantially higher percentage could be attributable to external financing, especially if the trend of recent mineral development in Canada and Australia is any criterion, and including local sales of equity as a part of the package.

He took a great interest in technical matters and his inclination was strongly toward research investigations. At the same time he was effective in manual and mechanical work and was generally found working side by side with the men under his direction. His nature was unselfish and he was extremely popular socially. He was a member of the Coeur d'Alene Commandery, Knights Templar. Stanly A. Easton. Lieutenant.Louis Baird Louis Baird, a Lieutenant in the Royal Field Artillery of the British Army, died on the battlefield in 1915. Lieutenant Baird was born July 28, 1880, at Stirling, Scotland. His technical education was obtained at King's College, Melbourne, Australia, in 1893 to 1895, and at the Technical College at Glasgow, Scotland, in 1897 to 1900. After an apprenticeship with the Mexican J. & 8. Rec. Co. of Mexico, lasting from 1900 to 1903, he became mill superintendent for the Cia. Minera Benito, at Juarez, Zac. During the year 1905-6 he was assistant manager of the Caridelaria y Anexas, at Pinos, Zac., and from 1906 to 1907 was engineer with the Cia. Minera Jalisco, San Sebastian, Jalisco. At the time of his admission to the Institute, in 1908, he was practising as a mining engineer at Etzatlan, Jalisco, Mexico. For the next four years he practised his profession in the City of Guadalajara, Jalisco, removing, in 1913, to Ixtlan del Rio, in the State of Tepic. It was from here that he returned to England to put his services at the disposal of the British Government. The Institute is not definitely informed as to how, where, or when Lieutenant Baird met his death. iCaptain John H. Ballamy John H. Ballamy, Captain on the Regimental Staff of the 103d Engineers, was killed near Fismes, on Aug. 9, 1918. Captain Ballamy was born at Plvmouth. Pa.. in 1886 and graduated from' the High School of that town in 1903. In the following year he began work as a coal miner, and at the same time began the study of mining engineering in the evening and any other spare time. THERE is a tendency on the part of practical foundrymen to accept with reluctance the results of tests on sands, binders, and. such materials made in the chemical laboratory alone. They feel that such tests frequently emphasize and measure properties that are of minor importance and fail to take account of characteristics that are important in determining the value of the material in actual practice. Experience seems to indicate that the most thorough and conclusive, test for any new foundry material is an actual run in the foundry alongside of a standard material of known value. Such a test, however, involves certain difficulties and necessitates certain precautions. It is not always easy to obtain a fair trial for a new material. We all have certain prejudices, which unconsciously affect our judgment to a marked degree. A practical test frequently involves so many workmen, each of whom reacts in a different manner to the test, that; the personal equation becomes very, complex and the true results of the test are obscured. There are times, too, when a thorough experimental trial of a material would interfere too much with the rush of work in a department or would hazard the quality, of the product to such an extent as to make it inadvisable. Under such conditions a laboratory test is advisable before the material is sent into the foundry. These tests should be made as practical as possible and so closely related to foundry practice as to give a true index to the value of a, product for the purpose desired. Core sands and molding sands are as numerous "as the sands of the sea" and vary as much in quality. Old sources of supply are continually failing and new ones must be opened, so that we must continually search for new and better grades of sand. The so-called Rocky Mountain region is here made to include Colorado, Idaho, Montana, northern New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming, an area of great distances and relatively sparse population. Conditions of distance, transportation and markets have had their retarding influence on devolopment and production but the increase in facilities and markets in recent years has provided additional incentive for more thorough search for new productive areas and the more complete development of the known fields. The low prices of crude during the past year have offset, to a certain extent, the desire for increased production and much of the effort has been directed therefore to outlining new areas rather than to attempts to increase production from known fields and thereby add to the already sufficient supply above ground. During the year just closed the Rocky Mountain region has seen consistent efforts to outline new areas and these efforts have been reasonably successful. In this area a very large part of the land is government property, and by cooperation between the government, the private owner and the company it has been possible to carry on development in a scientific manner, providing for the maximum recovery of valuable products at least cost and at times when prices were best. Due to the fact that in the Rocky Mountain region costs of exploration and development are relatively high because of natural circumstances, it has been the policy of operators to drill test wells only on structures where they controlled a large proportion of the land. Even community lease programs have been effected in certain areas, thus obviating the necessity of offset drilling and the attendant uneconomical and even wasteful production. Oil production in the Rocky Mountain states has shown a slight increase during the year, the average daily production for November being 78,124 bbl. as against an average in January of 76,681 bbl. The total production during the first 11 months of the year, according to the U. S. Burcau of Mines, was as follows:

The problem of determining the number of particles of a phase distributed randomly in unit volume c an opaque matrix from measurements made on random plane sections is closely investigated. A formalized derivation for the general case is presented. Applications of this formal result are made to specific types of aggregates dispersed in a matrix; circles, particles with flat circular ends, cylinders, and constant shape aggregates of ellipsoids of revolution. Quantitative measurements of the average geometric properties of these aggregates are developed. In 1953 R L. ullman' developed a technique for determining, from measurements made on random plane sections, the number per unit volume, Nv, of particles imbedded in an opaque matrix. Using meas urements previously developed for volume fraction, vV,' and surface area per unit volume, .SV,= he was able to determine average volume, average surface area, and average dimensions of particles, independent of size distribution, for spheres and circular disks,' as well as for uniformly sized cylinders of any axial ratio.4 The technique is mathematically rigorous for the cases studied. Recent studies of this problem have yielded rigorous solutions for the general case of cylinders, permitting evaluation of NV independent of size distribution and with all axial ratios intermixed. Generalization to shapes having flat, circular ends has been deduced. A solution has also been obtained for the ellipsoid of revolution, independent of size distribution, but requiring a constant axial ratio in the generating ellipses. In the following derivations, as in Fullman's work, it is assumed that the problem is purely a combination of geometry and probability theory,that is,eithe the particles to be measured are imbedded randomly in the matrix, or a sufficient number of random plane sections are taken to make the sample representative. A relationship exists between the number of par- ticles of a given size and shape that may be situated in unit volume (Ny) and the number of intersections a random plane can be expected to make with these particles (Na). It is the purpose of the following section to derive this relationship. The probability of Intersecting Convex Bodies. Consider a convex, closed surface, that is, one for which no two surface normals point in the same direction, situated at some arbitrary position and orientation in a cube of material that is one unit long at each edge. It is not necessary to assume that this surface is symmetrical. Let planes be constructed in the cube parallel to the top face and at random distances from it. Those planes which lie between the two planes which are just tangent to the top and bottom of the surface will intersect it. The probability that a plane will intersect the body may be defined as the limit of the fraction of planes that lie between the two tangent planes as the total number of planes constructed becomes infinite. This fraction, in the limit, is equal to the distance between the two tangent planes, DV, divided by the total length over which planes are constructed, which has been taken as unity. If the body is now rotated to a new orientation, applying the same argument, the probability of intersection is again numerically equal to the distance between tangent planes. Let DV ($, 0) be defined as the distance between tangent planes of a convex body as a function of orientation, Fig. 1. The probability, Pr, of intersecting the body with a randomly oriented and randomly positioned plane, is then equal to the average value of DV (0, $) over all possible orientations. I. INTRODUCTION. THE superficial alteration of ore-deposits is a recognized principle of geology, in the same way as is the superficial alteration of any of the common rocks. Its importance in some classes of ore-deposits is also well understood, as in many precious-metal deposits; while in other classes, its importance has been proved in individual cases, as in the Lake Superior iron-deposits. The causes and effects of superficial alteration in many classes of deposits, however, are not so generally understood; and it is the object of the present paper to show that such changes almost invariably give rise to exceedingly important chemical and physical phenomena, while in many deposits, the question as to whether they can or cannot be profitably worked depends largely on the extent and character of this alteration. The various treatises on ore-deposits published in the United States and Europe make frequent mention of superficial alteration, but have not treated the subject fully. As early as 1554, however, before which time but little accurate information was had on the geologic nature of ore-deposits, Prof. J. D. Whitney in his classic volume, The Metallic Wealth of the United States, describes the alteration-products, or gossans, in certain deposits and mentions others. On the more purely chemical side of the question, the work of Bischof, Daubrée, Roth, Rose, Hunt, Breithaupt, Blum, Julien, Deville, Debray, Volger, Moissan, Fremy, Lévy, Fouqué, and others has afforded much valuable information and many useful suggestions. This paper reports the results of the use of salt in some research work carried on during the past 3 years at the Salt Lake City Station of the Bureau of Mines, which is quartered in the University of Utah, whose Metallurgical Research Department cooperates with the Bureau. Only the work involving the use of salt is described. The authors wish equal credit given to J. F. Cullen, C. L. Larson, C. Y. Pfoutz, C. E. Sims, H. C. Neeld, R. W. Johnson, F. G. Moses, N. C. Christensen, and G. H. Wigton, who have all in some way contributed toward the success of this work, while connected with the station in one way or another. Lead Metallurgy Popularly Supposed to be Without Problems In lead metallurgy it is difficult at first to find metallurgical problems, as the prevailing conception has been that lead is so easily concentrated in its various ores and so easily reduced to its metallic form that the only progress possible is that involved in cheapening methods of mining and of reduction. Most of the problems usually considered are of minor nature and do not involve radical metallurgical changes. During the three years of work of the Salt Lake Station, the following classification of problems in the metallurgy of lead has been made: Oxidized Ores. 1. Ores containing only lead. 2. Ores containing lead and silver or gold. 3. Ores containing lead and zinc, with or without silver. Sulphide Ores. 1. Ores of pyrite carrying some lead. 2. Ores of complex zinc-lead-iron sulphides. 3. Complex sulphides containing precious metals.

CONSIDERING the extent of the gold-fields of Nova Scotia, which occupy an area of 6000 to 7000 square miles, a few words as to the cost of extracting and reducing the ores may prove of interest. The veins are for the most part narrow, 4 to 12 inches being the usual width, while a 2-foot vein is considered a large one; but they offer many advantages, inasmuch as the ore is easily treated, wages are low, and machinery and supplies can be transported by water to within from 1 to 15 miles of the different mining districts. The Salmon River vein is a notable exception to the above rule as to width. It ranges from 4 to 20 feet in width. The Hall-Anderson of Fifteen-Mile Stream (where there are several veins) is another, which has proved to be from 3 to 4 feet in width. The ownership of all mining claims is retained by the Crown, but persons wishing to work them can lease as many unoccupied areas as they please for twenty-one years, with option of renewal, on the payment of two dollars for each area, and a royalty of 2 per cent. on all gold extracted. Each area consists of 150 Get along the lode and 250 feet across, upon which a certain amount of work must be done, which by recent law is reduced from one hundred to forty days' work for each area every year. Any person erecting in a district the first mill, having at least 8 stamps, and being at least 10 miles from any other mill, is entitled to a lease of 10 areas, free from advance-payment and from royalty, for twenty-one years. A record must be kept, and filed every quarter at the office of the Commissioner of Mines, of the total number of days' work done on the areas, and a monthly statement of the number of tons crushed, and the actual yield of gold. Gold-mining in Nova Scotia may be said to have commenced with the finding of a nugget of gold in a brook at Tangier in 1858. Although confident of its ability to meet any demands that may be made, the petroleum-refining industry is not complacent about the situation and realizes that the quantities of petroleum products to be furnished are so enormous and so far beyond what was previously estimated that the full cooperative effort of the industry must be exerted. Establishment by the President in May of the Office of Petroleum Coordinator for Defense with Secretary of the Interior Ickes at its head, plus the formation of the Petroleum Industry Council for Defense, in November, provide the channels for united endeavor within the industry and the means for gearing that endeavor in full harmony with the nation's needs. Great strides have been made and a rapid understanding of the situation and the magnitude of the task is being attained by all concerned. Refining, by constant study and development, by willingness to experiment and install new processes, and to replace older plants with more efficient equipment, had kept on a high plane of efficiency and progress. Working under the free competitive system, it built up its establishments until, as expressed in last year's report, it was easily able to supply any domestic demand that might be placed on it. Turning the United States into the arsenal not only of itself but of the united nations resisting aggression, however, in- creased the call for practically all petroleum products and in particular 100-octane aviation gasoline and high-viscosity aviation lubricating oils. Refining Capacity With over four million barrels a day of crude oil being charged to stills at the year's end, oil refining had broken all records and faced the necessity of further increasing its size to supply the ever-increasing demand for products, some of which, like 100-octane aviation gasoline, were research laboratory curiosities a few years ago. Although the refining capacity of the United States is listed at 4,860,000 bbl., about 800,000 bbl. of this is economically unavailable because of plant location or type. To meet the increasing needs, additional capacity of another half million barrels may have to be built in suitable locations and designed with an eye toward maximum production of aviation gasoline but with inherent flexibility to make it possible to vary and interchange with production of motor gasoline, furnace oils, and other products as necessity dictates. An interesting side light on this refining capacity question was an enquiry from official Washington for knowledge as to any idle refineries of something of the order of 10,000-bbl. daily crude capacity that might be purchased for bodily removal to Russia. 100-Octane Aviation Gasoline Largest of the tasks confronting refiners at the year's end was that of raising
