Since 1970 a new series of pneumo-mechanical flotation machines has been developed by Outokumpu Oy. The cells have a completely new type of mechanism based on a recently-developed theory of conditions necessary for dispersion of large amounts of air. The mechanism was developed in 3 cu m cells and scaled to 16 cu m cells. Rotor and stator description, scale-up theory, and practical experience with the 16 cu m cell are presented.

A graphical solution is presented for the equation v =v &-cU where vb is the volume of liquid b of density 6 that must be added to liquid a of volume va and density d, in order to obtain a heavy-liquid solution of preferred density dm for mineral fractionation. The equation is valid only for pairs of liquids whose volumes are additive, but empirical density-composi-tion data show that this condition is met over wide compositional ranges by all of the heavy solutions that are commonly used for mineralogical analysis. The chart is a nomograph which consists of two horizontal volume scales ad a vertical density scale arranged so that one volume scale occurs on each side of the density scale. All the scales are linear. For two liquids of density d, and &, respectively, each volume scale has an independent level on the density scale, ad the graphical solution for vb on the nomograph is obtained by construction of one straight line. The chart can be prepared easily to cover any density range with any desired accuracy by proper selection of the scales. Heavy-liquid separation of particulate samples is an indispensable analytical procedure in the mineralogical and mineral-process ing laboratory. Heavy liquids may be used 1) to isolate specific minerals in the form of high purity products or to fractionate samples into several products with density limits for petrographic, chemical, spectrographic, and X-ray diffraction analysis,'-' 2) to determine the density of minerals,'-l4 3) to facilitate the recognition and identification of optically similar associated minerals,15 and 4) to determine quantitatively the degree of liberation of ore minerals in ores and mill products at various limiting sizes." The preparation and recovery of heavy liquids suitable for mineralogical analysis are discussed fully in the literature and operational procedures and special equipment for heavy-liquid separation are described in numerous references.'747837' 13,18,25-42 Useful tabulations of heavy liquids for mineralogical analysis are given by Tickell, Mil-ner,' Twenhofel and Tyler,' and Lange and a very complete up-to-date list of minerals arranged according to increasing density is given by Mursky and Thompson. USEFULNESS OF THE DENSITY CHART For any particulate sample, the limiting densities selected for its fractionation by means of heavy- liquid separation depend on the respective densities of the constituent minerals and the specific objectives of the separation. In many instances, the densities of readily available and practicable heavy liquids do not coincide with those that are required, and suitable liquids of the proper density are obtained by dilution with miscible liquids. In the general case, one may wish to mix either a pure liquid (A) or a solution of two miscible liquids (AP,,) of known density with either a pure liquid (B) or a different solution of the two miscible liquids (A,B,) of higher or lower density in order to obtain a final liquid of the preferred density. In conventional practice, the latter is reached empirically by trial-and-error addition of increments of one liquid to the other. The density of the final solution may be determined either by accurately weighing a known volume of the final liquid,'' 532;4;40, or by means of I)a Westphal balance, 2)a hydrometer, a refractometer in the case of binary liquid systems for which density-refractive index data are available,15 4) natural or synthetic .indicators of known density, a pycno-meter. Like all trial-and-error methods, these procedures are time consuming and many require special equipment which may not be available, The purpose of this paper is to show that the volume of a liquid of known density which is to be added to another liquid of known volume and density in order to obtain a solution with an intermediate preferred density may be determined rapidly and accurately by a graphical method provided that the two liquids form ideal or quasi-ideal solutions whose volumes are additive. The opening of a new large-scale beneficiation plant is always news, but the start-up of Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co.'s Eagle Mills near Ishpeming in Michigan's Upper Peninsula early in October is of particular interest because of the completely different type of operation being carried on at this plant. The ore boat which left Marquette, Mich. on the 3rd of October bound for the plant of Wisconsin Steel Division of International Harvester, not only carried the first output of this new mill, but also carried the first agglomerate made from the Upper Peninsula's jasper ore, the first commercial output from an updraft traveling-grate furnace, and the first large-scale commercial application of the balling disk, also called the flying saucer, to the agglomeration of an iron flotation concentrate.

I have the honor to submit herewith the report of the Secretary for the year 1915 showing the principal activities of the Institute: Meetings.-The 110th Meeting, including the Annual Business Meeting, was held in New York City, Feb. 15 to 17, 1915. The full report of this meeting is given in Volume LI of the Transactions. The number of papers presented was 53, and the attendance was 357 members and guests. The 111th Meeting was held in San Francisco, Cal., Sept. 16 to 19, 1915. Sixty-eight technical papers were presented, and the attendance was over 400 members and guests. The full report of this meeting is given in the Bulletin for December, 1915. Local Section.-A new, strong Local Section of the Institute, with head-quarters in Arizona and known as the Arizona Section, was formed during 1915. FOLLOWING the presentation of the papers by Messrs. Mahan and Butler, the discussion printed below ensued. A. C. LANE* With particular reference to the New England con-sumer, I entirely agree with Mr. Mahan that intelli-gent marketing methods will do a good deal, but there is more than one way of improving them. For instance, coal can be shipped best to New England about this time of year-after the storms of the winter and before the movement of crops in the summer. For that reason there ought to be seasonal freight rates. This will be agreed to by most coal men if you will ask them, especially those who are connected with large concerns like the Metropolitan Coal Co., and yet they do not get seasonal freight rates partly because the railroads are afraid if they once reduce them they will never have a chance to get them back again. But it would be an improvement to have seasonal freight rates. Another thing: When we are buying in New England we want really a certain amount of heat value in our coal. There is no great advantage in our buying ash, nor is there any particular advantage in the railroad shipping ash and clogging the circulatory system of the body politic any more than clogging the circulatory system of the physical body. It would be desirable if the wholesaler, and to some extent the retailer, could guarantee the amount of ash or sell their coal on heating value. If you are interested in that you will find some interesting charts, in "Anthracite Coal Costs Analyzed," a pamphlet issued by the Anthracite Coal Consumers Association, Inc., New York City, as to rates from various and sundry points for bituminous and anthra-cite coal from the field to New York, Buffalo and Chi-cago. Here in New England they are both up against the competition of oil. About 3 or 3 1/2 bbl. oil will do the work of a ton of coal. One of my millionaire friends who is well posted on the situation is putting oil in his Commonwealth Avenue house because it is the most economical. Moreover, we can get Welsh coal from across the water (and help equalize this matter of exchange with Europe) in close competition with Penn-sylvania coal.

THE thesis of this article is that the age of Newton is now coming to a close, and that recent scientific discoveries have in store an even greater revolution in our entire outlook than the revolution effected by the discovery of universal gravitation by Newton. The revolution that now confronts us, arises from the recent discovery of new facts, the only interpretation of which is that our conviction that nature is understandable and subject to law arose from the narrowness of our horizons, and that if we sufficiently extend our range we shall find that nature is intrinsically and in its elements neither understandable nor subject to law. The new experimental facts are in the realm of quantum phenomena. Comparatively little has been written for popular consumption about this new realm which has opened in the last fifteen years. The man in the street has been much more interested in relativity, which to him has seemed extremely interesting and revolutionary. Occasionally, however, there has filtered down to him the news that nearly all the theoretical physicists are occupied with a new order of phenomena which they find very much more exciting and revolutionary than any in the realm of relativity. For after all is said and done, the practical effects of relativity, measured in ,dollars and' cents or in centimeters and grams, are exceedingly small, and require specially de- signed experiments executed by men of the highest skill to show their existence at all. The phenomena with which quantum theory deals, on the other hand, are of the greatest practical importance and involve the simplest aspects of everyday life. For example, before the advent of the quantum theory no one could explain why a tea kettle of water boiling on the stove should not give out enough light in virtue of its temperature to be visible in the dark; the accepted theories of optics demanded that it should be visible, but every burned child knew that it was not.

Points out differences between the new, more liberal, law passed by the Colombian Congress and the law passed in 1919, gives a few facts about the pipe-line concession granted to a Canadian company, and tells of new drilling developments. PROBABLY the most important development in the Colombian oil situation during the past year was the passage by Congress of a new petroleum law, which went into effect Jan. 31, 1923. The principal points of interest in which this new law changes or improves the previous one are as follows: Law 120 of 1919 provided that one person or corporation could not acquire more than three exploitation zones. of 5000 ha. each, and royalties were based on a sliding scale, to wit: 6 per cent. royalty on lands 400 km., or more, from the ocean; 8 per cent. on lands 200 but not over 400 km. from the ocean, and 10 per cent. royalty on lands located less than 200 km. from the ocean. Rentals were fixed at 10 centavos per hectare for the first year; 20 centavos for the second year; 50 centavos, third year, and $1 (one peso) yearly thereafter. Under this law the term of the lease was fixed at 20 years and, at the discretion of the government, could be extended for 10 years additional. After the expiration of the lease and its corresponding extension, the machinery and other material placed upon the property would vest in the government. A bond of 20,000 pesos was also required of the lessee to guarantee faithful performance of his contract.

The creep-rupture behavior of commercial powder-metallurgy tungsten rod is reported for temperatures of 2250°, 2500°, 2700°, and 2800°C, stresses up to 7000 psi, and times up to 4 hr. The temperature dependence and the stress dependence of creep rates are evaluated. Rupture time is fitted to the Larson-Miller parameter and compared to lower-temperature and higher stress results reported by pugh.4 THE tensile strength of single-crystal wire1 and of polycrystalline wire2 have been measured by Goucher. More recently Bechtold3 and pugh4 have studied the mechanical properties of tungsten rod between room temperature and 1200°C. Since tungsten has the highest melting point of all metals, it should retain useful strength to very high temperatures, and should find many applications in missiles, rockets, and so forth. Therefore, the mechanical usefulness of polycrystalline tungsten rod was investigated in the 2250" to 2800°C temperature range by short-time creep-rupture tests. MATERIALS TESTED Creep specimens were machined from 1/2-in. round commercial tungsten rod which was manufactured from powder by cold pressing, sintering, and hot swaging. Purity reported by the vendor was 99.95 pct W. Spectrochemical analyses showed "traces" (less than 0.01 pct) of silicon, iron, and titanium, and "faint traces" (less than 0.001 pct) of calcium and manganese. Carbon content was 30 ppm and nitrogen content was 70 to 110 ppm. No oxygen analysis was obtained. Room-temperature stress-strain tests on the as-received tungsten gave badly scattered results. Threaded end specimens broke at the threads. When these specimens were retested using shoulder grips, the specimens broke at the shoulders. No fractures occurred in the gage lengths. The fracture stresses were: 127,000; 137,000; and 154,000 psi for three specimens which fractured at the shoulders. The microstructure of the as-received tungsten rod is shown in Fig. 1. SPECIMENS USED Fig. 2 shows the two types of creep specimens tested. The threaded-end type specimen, which was used in most tests, had a 3/4-in. gage length and 1/4-in. gage diam. The cone-end specimen, which was used primarily to investigate the effects of a smaller gage diameter and the practicability of the modified grips and specimen, had a 3/4-in. gage length and a 1/8-in. gage diam. In both cases, the gage length terminated at 0.005-in. high shoulders which served as fiducial marks for optical strain measurements. Surface finish on the gage length was 16 µ-in. rms. Creep rates and rupture times were not significantly different for the two types of specimens and were not affected by electropolishing the specimens before testing. TESTING PROCEDURE The constant-load creep-testing machine used has been described by Smith, Olson, and Brown.5 In it the specimen is held vertically by grips of similar material and on the axis of a cylindrical tungsten or tantalum heater-tube. The specimen is loaded by means of the specimen grips, a pull rod (which is sealed to the chamber lid by a vacuum-tight bellows), a mechanical lever system, and hanging dead weights. Both specimen and grips are heated by radiation from the heater-tube, which is heated by its own electrical resistance. An optical system views the incandescent specimen through slits in the radiation shielding and heater-tube. The optical system projects an enlarged image of the specimen gage length on a ground-glass screen. Periodic gage-length measurements are made on this image with two cathetometers. It is the purpose of this paper to outline briefly some of the considerations that enter into the economics of so-called recycling, the generic designation of the relatively recently developed process by which a condensate† is separated from gas-distillate gas at high pressure and the residual gas returned to the reservoir. This subject necessarily embraces not only a discussion of factors that should be considered in projecting a recycling operation, such as estimating reserves, investment and operating costs, but also a comparison of condensate with other types of petroleum. The place of condensate in its relation to the total supply of crude oil is pointed out as well as certain logical methods of product disposal. The cost of drilling wells and lease maintenance is not pertinent to this discussion because income and revenue are in this paper confined to that retained by the plant or plant operator for supplying processing facilities for the gas. Before the development of recycling a great many gas-distillate gas fields in Louisiana and Texas provided no income to their owners. When gas was sold from these reservoirs it was accompanied by irretrievable losses of condensate in the formation. The understanding of the func- tion of retrograde condensation resulted in the introduction of a new commercial petroleum recovery process for these hitherto unexploited fields and now permits the conditioning of this type of wet gas field for the sale of dry gas therefrom without waste. Some Economic Factors The study of a gas-distillate field for possible exploitation necessarily involves the critical appraisal of a number of elements, chief of which will be discussed here: (I) estimate of distillate in place, (2) estimate of distillate that can be brought to the surface, (3) available market, (4) costs. The considerations affecting the estimating of distillate reserves in place are in the main subject to the same errors as are involved in determining dry gas reserves. Determinable data including acreage, sand thickness, reservoir pressure, reservoir temperature, porosity and connate water provide the basis for calculating the volume of gas in place. Ample allowance must be made for connate water, which may occupy from 20 to 35 per cent of the pore space of the sand. The factor of supercom-pressibility is to a considerable extent nullified by the reservoir temperature. It has been considered well advised to allow this factor to serve as a cushion. With the gas reserves calculated, it remains only to assay the distillate content of the gas. A new technique facilitating the rapid determination of the three-dimensional morphology of phases suspended in an opaque matrix is described. The vapidity of the technique is based upon continuous cinephotomicrographic recording of specimen microstructure as the specimen surface is removed under controlled conditions in an electrolytic cell. The advantages of the technique for determining spatial morphologies in opaque materials are illustrated by application of this method to the study of the configuration of faults in a specimen of directionally solidified CuAl2-Al eutectic alloy. A spatial model of the eutectic fault network deduced in this manner has substantiated the facts that faults in this alloy tend to lie parallel to one another in a direction close to that of the specimen growth axis and that the majority of faults tend to bridge lamellae rather than run parallel to them as growth proceeds. For the specimen studied fault density decreased as growth proceeded. ALTHOUGH metallographic observation is a powerful tool for investigating the correlation between structure and properties in metallic alloys, ordinary metallographic methods suffer the fundamental limitation that any conclusions concerning the three-dimensional structure of these opaque materials must rely upon inference from two-dimensional microsections. For this reason it is frequently impossible to make valid judgments regarding the true spatial distribution of the micro-constituents in specimens under investigation. Several techniques have been devised to circumvent the basic limitation of planar microsec-tioning and employed with varying success. These include construction of three-dimensional models of alloy microstructure from sequences of photomicrographs,1-3 quantitative deduction of spatial features based upon statistical studies of data from random and/or selected plane microsections,4-6 and selective dissolution of one phase in a two-phase alloy to reveal the topography of the phase remaining.' However these techniques also have certain obvious disadvantages. Construction of three-dimensional models is a very time-con- suming procedure due to the tedious polish-etch-photograph cycle needed to obtain the necessary photomicrographs to portray the spatial microstructure. Statistical methods by their very nature give only average values of the quantities being studied and cannot therefore give a detailed physical picture of the microstructure to be observed. Finally, the technique of selective dissolution is only applicable in systems where the phases are of vastly different chemical reactivity; it is of little use in the study of single-phase alloys. Since the determination of the three-dimensional structure of opaque materials is hindered by two facts—the materials are opaque to radiation in the visible spectrum and construction of spatial models of microstructure is quite laborious—two solutions to the problem suggest themselves: 1) use radiation of energy great enough to render the alloy transparent, i.e., some microradio-graphic method, or, 2) devise a rapid means to section and record alloy microstructure. Stereomicroradiography has indeed been used to study internal arrangements of phases in several materials8,9 but the method, in general, is limited to very thin specimens (due to X-ray absorption) and simple microstructures. It would seem then that development of a rapid, simple, and generally applicable technique for studying the details of alloy microstructures in three dimensions can best be undertaken by following the second approach above. Using this idea a new technique for rapid evaluation of spatial microstructures was developed based upon cinephotomicrographic recording of the micro-structure of a specimen undergoing controlled electrolytic dissolution. It was further felt that application of this technique to the careful study of the spatial configuration of faults in a CuAl2-Al eutectic alloy would yield information that could be correlated with the extensive data3,6,10-12 already compiled concerning the solidification and crystallography of this eutectic. The practicality and usefulness of similar methods for studying three-dimensional features in alloys has recently been illustrated by the study of dislocation loops in zinc13 and spheroidized structure in steel.14

PRODUCERS of building stone have had to seek new and attractive uses for their output to supplement the diminished orders for standard products. Lunar is the direct result of the need of new outlets for marble and is. probably the most ingenious and attractive type to reach the market in a quarter of a century. It is a highly translucent stone which retains the same glistening sparkle in transmitted light that marble exhibits by incident rays. This sparkle sets it apart entirely from translucencies made of glass or even onyx, alabaster, and the distinctive exceedingly fine textured calcite marbles produced in Alabama and quarried formerly in northern Vermont and Quebec.

THE occurrence of the (100) [lOO] or "cube" texture upon annealing of cold-rolled copper has been much investigated.' The conditions favorable for its formation were found to be a high final annealing temperaturez or long annealing time," a high reduction of area in cold rolling prior to the final anneal,' and a small penultimate grain size." The effects of penultimate grain size and of rolling reduction were found by Cook and Richards4 to be interrelated in such a way that any combination of them giving lower than a certain value of the final average thickness of the grains in the rolled material leads to a fairly complete cube texture with a given final annealing time and temperature. Also, according to the same authors, at a higher final annealing temperature a larger average rolled grain thickness, i.e., a lower final rolling reduction, is sufficient than at a lower temperature. These somewhat involved conditions can be understood readily on the basis of recent results obtained at this laboratory. Hsun Hu was able to show recently by means of quantitative pole figure determinations that the rolling texture of tough pitch copper, which is almost identical with that of 2s aluminum: may be described roughly as a scatter around four symmetrical "ideal" orientations not very far from (123) [112]. In the case of aluminum, annealing leads to retain-ment of the rolling texture with some decrease of the scatter around the four "ideal" orientations, and to the appearance of a new texture component, namely the cube texture." A microscopic technique, revealing grain orientations by means of oxide film and polarized light, showed that the retainment of the rolling texture is achieved through two different mechanisms operating simultaneously, namely "re-crystallization in situ," and the formation of strain-free grains in orientations different from their local surroundings, but identical with that of another component of the rolling texture. Thus, a local area in the rolled material, having approximately the orientation of one of the four "ideal" components of the texture, partly retains its orientation during annealing, while recovering from its cold-worked condition, and it is partially absorbed at the same time by invading strain-free grains of an orientation approximately corresponding to that of another "ideal" texture component. The reorientation here, as well as in the formation of the strain-free grains of "cube" orientation, may be described as a [Ill] rotation of about 40°, see Fig. 1 of ref. 6. The preferential growth of grains in such orientations is a result of the high mobility of grain boundaries corresponding to this relative orientation.' " It appears very likely that in copper the mechanism of the structural changes during annealing is similar to that observed in aluminum (except for the much greater frequency of formation of annealing twins in copper). In both metals the new grains of cube orientation have a great advantage over the new grains with orientations close to one of the four components of the rolling texture. This advantage stems from their symmetrical orientation with respect to all four retained rolling texture components of the matrix; they are oriented favorably for growth at the expense of all of these four orientations. As a result, the growth of the "cube grains" is favored over the growth of the others, as soon as the new grains have grown large enough to be in contact with portions of the matrix containing elements of more than one, and preferably of all four component textures. It is clear that this critical size is smaller and, therefore, attained earlier in the annealing process if the structural units, such as grains and kink bands, representing the four matrix orientations are smaller, i. e., if the average thickness of the rolled grains is smaller. Hence, for a given annealing time and temperature, a smaller penultimate grain size and a higher rolling reduction both tend to increase that fraction of the annealing period during which the above condition is satisfied. Consequently, the percentage volume of material assuming the cube orientation increases. The same is true also for increasing time and temperature of annealing when the penultimate grain size and the final rolling reduction are constant, since the average size attained by the new grains during annealing increases with the annealing time and temperature. For the same reason, at higher annealing temperatures a given volume percentage of cube texture can be obtained with larger rolled grain thickness (larger penultimate grain size, or smaller rolling reduction) than at lower annealing temperatures. The well-known conspicuous sharpness of the cube texture may be interpreted as a result of the fact that selective growth of only those grains is favored that have an orientation closely symmetrical with respect to all four components of the deformation texture and exhibit, therefore, a high boundary mobility in contact with each. The effect of alloying elements in suppressing the cube texture, as described by Dahl and Pawlek,' appears to be associated with a change in the rolling texture. For face-centered cubic metals, such as copper, which do exhibit the cube texture upon annealing, the rolling texture is always of the type described above, i. e., scattered around four "ideal orientations" of approximately (123) [112]. The addition of certain alloying elements, such as about 5 pct Zn or 0.05 pct P in copper, has the as yet unexplained effect of changing the rolling texture into the (110) 11121 type. This texture consists of two fairly sharply developed, twin related components. In such cases, as in 70-30 brass and in silver, the annealing texture again is related to the rolling texture by a [lll] rotation of about 30°, however, because of the different rolling texture to start from, it has no cube texture component. At higher temperatures, both in brassm and in silver," grain growth leads to a further change in texture: A [lll] rotation of the same amount, but in reversed direction, back to the original rolling texture.

The machine operates a 4-in. auger with a detachable cutting head, as shown in Fig I. The auger length is 3 ft 4 in. and the cutting head averages 7 in. The unit has a drilling capacity of 100 ft and can drill an average prospect hole in less than 15 min. The weight of the motor is used for the thrust feed for driving the auger and head down, aided by the spiral shape of the auger. The rate of downward motion—i.e., the feed—is regulated by a handwheel. The string of tools is withdrawn from the hole by a gear train controlled by a hand-operated clutch. The only fine coal washer with proved automatic controls, the feldspar jig is capable of good efficiencies even at low separating gravities, handles a variety of products, and treats 150 tph and over. IN continental Europe the feldspar jig is used almost exclusively for cleaning the fine sizes of coal; it operates with an artificial bed, made up generally of pieces of feldspar or of any other hard and heavy rock with good cleavages. A primitive form of this machine requiring close supervision was used in this country years ago, but output was small. The modern machines are generally air-pulsated Baum-type jigs, with capacities up to 150 tph, and treat sizes from % in. to 0, usually previously dedusted or deslimed. These jigs are equipped with very accurate and sensitive automatic controls insuring satisfactory operation even at low separating gravity and with feeds irregular in quality and quantity. This paper will deal more particularly with coal cleaning separation, but the technical studies apply equally to all minerals. Theory of the Feldspar Jig To understand fully the operation of the feldspar jig and to appreciate its potential value, it is necessary to measure and analyze the motion of small particles of various specific gravities, falling in various media, under various conditions. As no practical formulas were available for that purpose, the writer has developed new theories and established new sets of formulas, which cannot be demonstrated here. They are applicable to all minerals and to many problems of coal or mineral concentration. These formulas do not pretend to absolute accuracy, but results, tested by comparison with experimentally recorded data, are sufficient for practical purposes, as they give definite indications of trends, relative values, and order of magnitude of the many factors involved. For pulsating motions no earlier formulas are available. In the case of continuous currents or motions, such formulas as Rittinger's, Allen's, or Stokes', over a hundred years old, apply only to special shapes and sizes of particles, involve factors and coefficients difficult to measure or appreciate, and deal only with free motions. They are of little use in solving practical problems. Units used with the formulas presented here are in the CGS system. Lateral friction and suction have been taken into account according- to methods currently used in aerodynamics, and only hindered motion is dealt with. As the feldspar jig is primarily intended to create a fluid bed condition, the mixture of fluids and solids obtained is homogeneous, and the apparent specific gravity of the separating medium is calculated accordingly. For instance, if 20 pct of the volume is coal and shale, with an average of 1.60 sp gr, in a liquid of 1.10 sp gr, the actual specific gravity of the separating fluid is 0.80 x 1.1 + 0.20 X 1.6 = 1.20. The fundamental equations are as follows: The general motion of a particle falling in a medium of specific gravity equal to u, hindered motion. is dv/dt = g/Ls [ L (s-u) - u/g v2 [1] g = 981 cm per sec, acceleration of gravity, and L = thickness of the particle of specific gravity (s) and velocity (v). The initial acceleration dv/dt = g (1-u/s ) [2] is a function of the specific gravity of the particle, only for a given medium, and independent of its dimensions—an ideal separating condition. The terminal velocity Vt = gxL- (s-u)/u, [3] for a given value of u, is a function of s and L. Two particles, L, s, and L2 s2, are said to be equivalent if they have the same terminal velocity, and accordingly L1/L2=s2-u/s1-u. [4] Two such particles cannot be separated by continuous currents, in any concentrating device. Two versions of the Ti-Mn binary diagram have been published recently.' , -0th diagrams show two compounds in the region between 40 and 70 wt pct Mn, but disagree as to the reaction in which these compounds are involved. The investigation of the manganese-rich portion of the Ti-Mn binary diagram was undertaken at New York University as part of an investigation of ternary systems with titanium and manganese in order to determine which of the proposed diagrams is correct. A number of alloys between 31 and 70 pct Mn were prepared in a manner similar to that described by Cadoff and Nielsen; except that low currents (110 amp in argon atmosphere) and long melting times (up to 20 min) were used to prepare the alloys. Compositions were determined from weight-loss data, assuming all loss as due to manganese. Heat treatments were carried out with relatively large pieces, since there was a tendency for manganese to be lost during heat treatment. When X-ray diffraction data was to be obtained, the central parts of heat-treated specimens were used to make filings or powders which were not heat treated. Specimens were heat treated from the as-cast state. Heat-treatment times were as follows: 1150°C, 1 day; ll00°C, 2 days; 1000°C, 5 days; and 900°C, 15 days. It should be noted that equilibrium was not attained at 900°, 1000°, and in one case, at 1150°C. Metallographic specimens were electrolytically polished and strain etched by a technique described elsewhere.' At least four, and possibly six, phases were found in the region investigated. On the basis of information available at this time, a completely self-consistent diagram cannot be constructed, and therefore data are presented only for those phases which have been identified by both X-ray and microstruc-ture. Of the compounds detected, the one highest in manganese is the Laves phase, TiMn,, which is hexagonal with a MgZn, type of structure.V he diffraction data for TiMn2 from a 70 pct Mn alloy annealed at 1150°C are shown in Table I. The c/a ratio and parameters of TiMn2 agree well with those of Wall-baum hnd Rostoker et al. The values obtained here are c/a = 1.641, a = 4.825A. Another compound is the y-phase which is estimated to contain about 60 pct Mn. The y-phase has a structure which is identical to that of TiMn, with c/a = 1.639, a = 4.906Å. The fact that y has a Laves-type lattice would suggest that TiMn, has a range of solubility which extends from the composition of TiMn2 (69.6 Mn) to that of y (60 pct Mn). However, this could not account for microstructures which, in the 60 to 70 pct Mn region, show several phases in both the as-cast state and after annealing at 1150°C. Fig. 1 shows a two-phase structure of a 60 pct Mn alloy annealed at 1150°C. The phases present are y (white) and e (dark). If y were TiMn, then, according to Rostoker et al.,' the second phase of Fig. 1 should be P-Ti. The diffraction data for the 60 pct Mn alloy of Fig. 1 are shown in Table I. The starred d-values are from the e-phase and these lines do not correspond to those of &Ti.
