Even the legal pound varied considerably from place to place, depending on locality, and assayers would use different factors depending on the sensitivity of their balances, among other things. IN CHAPTER I it was shown that the approximate market value of the copper produced at the twelve big Porphyry mines from 1905 to 1931, inclusive, was $2,821,300,000. This represented the refined metal ready for shipment to the consumer. In addition, at least $50,000,000 worth of gold and silver had been produced, more than $30,000,000 coming from the Utah mine alone. Consequently, the revenues totaled about $2,871,300,000, as shown in Table 58. Society paid this sum for a given quantity of metal that it wanted for industrial use. Where did the money go? Who were the direct beneficiaries of the creation of this new wealth? These questions this chapter will answer in a general way. Because some necessary data are not available, an exact tabulation in detail can not be made, but Table 58 is believed to reflect with reasonable accuracy the disposition made of the aggregate income from the twelve operations. The word "operations" is used advisedly because the complexity of corporate relations precludes the possibility of picking out companies, as could be done if each enterprise were an independent entity such as Miami, for example. Some explanation of the table and some elaboration of the items under "Outgo" is desirable. In the first place, it is assumed that the sum of surplus current assets existing in various treasuries at the end of 1931 was substantially equivalent to the “new” money that actually was put into the enterprises as a group. Less than $20,000,000 in new capital was realized from securities sold by the Utah Copper Co., the remaining funds coming from earnings. In respect to some of the others, such as Chuquicamata, Inspiration, and Andes, the amount of new money was much greater. Phosphate rock is a natural rock containing one or more phosphate minerals usually calcium phosphate, of sufficient purity and quantity to permit its use, either directly or after beneficiation in the manufacture of commercial products.1 The principal minerals in phosphate rock have the apatite structure which may be represented by the type formula: Ca10(X2) (PO4)6 where X represents the hydroxyl group (OH), chlorine or fluorine, either singly or collectively. The calcium may be partly replaced by sodium, magnesium, and other positive ions such as manganese, strontium, lead, uranium, cerium, yttrium and other rare earths. The PO4 radical may be partly replaced by small quantities of UO4, AsO4, SiO4, CO3, SO4, or Vo4. A typical commercial rock is usually a calcium phosphate containing 3 to 4 pct fluorine, the major impurities being limonite or other iron oxides, clay, aluminum phosphates and silica as quartz sand. A little vanadium is present in most of the domestic rock deposits (except the Tennessee Brown Rock), according to Jacob, Hill, Marshall and Reynolds! A little uranium occurs in the Florida leached zone, as will be brought out later. The chemical analyses are reported as P205, or tricalcium phosphate Ca3(PO4)2, the latter often designated by the trade name BPL (bone phosphate of lime). Commercial analyses usually report iron and alumina as oxides, lime as CaO and silica or insoluble. Colony3 examined many samples of apatite, staffelite, dahlite and American phosphorites and concluded that all have identical X-ray diffraction patterns. The phosphates in the phosphate rock have very minute crystalline structures. The mineral apatite Ca3(F.Cl) (PO4) 3 is the principal primary source of the element phosphorus, and occurs widely distributed in igneous rocks but rarely in a minable mass. Only about 12 pct of the world production of phosphate rock comes from primary apatites; the remainder is derived from secondary phosphorites. These phosphorites have been formed by the alteration of sediments by solutions containing phosphoric acid. Such solutions have come from the weathering or leaching of igneous rock containing apatite, bone deposits of prehistoric animals, marine life or guano deposits. These phosphorites are mostly alterations of phosphatic limestones. The sedimentary phosphate deposits are of marine origin and may have been enriched by subsequent solution of the more soluble calcium carbonate by waters containing carbon dioxide, by physical concentration by wave action, and by redeposition of the dissolved phosphate ions. Uses of Phosphate Phosphorus is the spark of life and is the structure builder and one of the main elements of plant food (fertilizer). Without phosphorus, life cannot exist. A "complete" plant food[t] in addition to phosphorus compounds contains potash, which acts as a catalyst to convert nutrients to useful forms, nitrogen to supply the growth element and many minor elements. The cycle of supply of phosphorus is from the apatite to solution and soil, absorption of plant life, decay and return to the soil or by animal life feeding on the plants. Preliminary research has identified several organic and aqueous solutions that are effective absorbents for SO, from simulated smelter gas containing 0.3 to 2% SO2. These SO2 loaded solutions are also compatible to the reaction of H2S and SO2 to precipitate a readily filtered elemental sulfur. The economic removal of SO2 and production of elemental sulfur from stack gases discharged by base- metal smelters is a challenging goal. The magnitude of this task is illustrated by the estimate that about 3.5 million tons of SO2 are discharged to the atmosphere by smelters annually in the U.S. The SO2 concentration of the gases ranges from about 0.5 to more than 3%. As the sulfur content of SO2 is 50% a potential production of 1,750,000 tons of sulfur per year is indicated.

Having had charge during the past year of the operations of the New River Coke Company, the second largest, if not the largest, coke-producer in this district, my attention was called particularly to the yield of coke from the coal as coked in a bank of beehive ovens, as the record showed that this yield, while believed to be well up with the practice of the district, was much lower than the analysis of the coal indicated it should be. The coal is well known to many members of the Institute, and the scope of this paper does not include a discussion of its occurrence and development. It suffices to say that the New River district comprises the mines working on the coals of No. XII. or the Conglomerate Series of the Rogers brothers, which are located on New river and its tributaries, and which find an outlet for their product east and west over the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway. The New river through this section carries the drainage from an extensive peneplain in which it has formed a very striking and stupendous canon, probably the most striking east of the Mississippi river. The only practical access to this territory is by means of this canon and the Chesapeake and Ohio road, and the opportunities for development by other lines may be considered as nil. If it were not for the fact that this road, farther west, reaches and develops entirely different coals, which are found in other measures, the New River district might properly be spoken of (as is now done at times) as the " C and 0. field." In the equilibrium phase diagram of the Ni-Mo sys-tem1,2 available at present, intermetallic compounds (or ordered phases)ß(Ni4Mo) and ?(Ni3Mo) are known to exist to the nickel rich side. In our recent investigations on Ni-Mo alloys, however, it has been found that the quenched alloys from the high temperature region containing more molybdenum than the Ni4Mo do not decompose directly into 0 and when annealed isothermally below the peritectoid temperature, i.e., 865°C. This note is to report the existence of Pt2Mo type superlattice (possibly ordered Ni2Mo) as a metastable phase in the early stage of decomposition. Alloys containing 20.1, 22.7, and 24.4 at. pct Mo were prepared by vacuum-melting electrolytic nickel of 99.9 pct purity and molybdenum powder of 99.9 pct purity in an alumina crucible. From the resulting ingots, sheets 0.3 mm thick were obtained by forging, hot-, and cold-rolling. The sheet specimens were water-quenched from ! region and subsequently annealed for various periods of time at temperatures below the peritectoid temperature. On these specimens were made optical-microscopic and transmis-sion-electron-microscopic observations. THREE GENERAL REASONS exist for applying metallic coatings to steel: to improve its appearance, to resist corrosion, and to resist wear and abrasion. Coating steel with other metals to improve the appearance and to resist corrosion is an old practice; coating for resistance to wear is one of the newer development's' that has become of importance with the development of chromium plating. Coating for improvement in appearance is practically confined to electroplating. Metals like copper, nickel, silver, chromium, cadmium, zinc and tin, because of their pleasing color, are used for this purpose. But these metals are never quite corrosion-proof, except cadmium and zinc, when applied directly to steel. Improvement in color or appearance must be permanent and therefore corrosion-resistant and tarnish-proof. For this reason, with the exception of cadmium, zinc and tin, the above metals are used in combination to obtain appearance and resistance to corrosion. Resistance to tarnish is dependent on the property of the particular metal. Chromium, being nontarnishable, has made it possible to obtain combination coatings of copper, nickel and chromium, copper and chromium, or nickel and chromium, which improve the appearance and also resist corrosion and tarnish. Such coatings find a wide field in decorative work particularly the copper-nickel-chromium combinations, and when properly applied are very satisfactory.

There are in this country some 20 or 30 societies for engineers and engineering scientists. Most of these organizations are autonomous, and there is little or no cooperation among them. Many do not touch the lives of our Institute members. However, during the course of the years several societies closely associated with the AIME have banded together to handle specific situations where cooperation was necessary. It is believed by many engineers that the functions of these cooperative societies should be analyzed and a plan set up to unify the engineering profession into an organization similar to the American Medical Association and the American Bar Association. The preliminary study of the AIME Committee for Inter-Engineering Society Cooperation has indicated that the following organizations bear upon the professional lives of our members. Some of these are federated groups, such as EJC and ECPD; others are individual-member participation groups, such as the Founder Societies and NSPE.

The pegmatites of the Kings Mountain-Lincolnton, N. C., area constitute the largest known domestic reserve of beryl and spodumene. The reserve is estimated to contain 90 million tons of pegmatic material with 1,280,000 tons of recoverable Li2O (lithia) as spodumene.1 The pegmatites also contain 0.4 to 0.5 pct beryl disseminated throughout the orebodies. The pegmatites may contain a potential reserve of 240,000 tons beryl, equivalent to approximately 34,000 tons of BeO. Different flotation methods for separating beryl from feldspar or quartz, or both, have been developed by various investigators.2,3,4,5,6,7 On the other hand, published information is limited on concentration of spodumene-beryl ores. As the response of beryl and spodumene to flotation is essentially the same, a successful separation of the two minerals depends upon use of a selective depressant or a selective collector for one of the minerals.

Pennsylvania has been a leader in the pageant of industrial America because of her natural mineral re- sources, geographical location, and the ingenuity and industry of her citizens. Brick and other clay products were manufactured in Philadelphia in William Penn's time. Ores of iron, zinc, lead, and copper were mined and smelted in eastern Pennsylvania long before the Revolution. Coal was mined on a commercial basis in the anthracite region as early as 1820 and in the bituminous fields in 1830. The first canals and railroads were constructed to transport minerals and mineral products. Oil was struck at Titusville in 1859. A significant event occurred in 1855-the establishment of the Farmers' High School-Pennsylvania's first attempt to provide higher education for its youth. The Farmers' High School included instruction in geology, mineralogy, and assaying. In 1859 the laws of Pennsylvania transferred to the School the state geological and mineralogical collections formerly located in Harrisburg. Well-informed people are familiar with the effects of the Land-Grant Act of 1862. With inspiring words it established state institutions of higher learning where "the leading object shall be, without excluding other scientific and classical studies . . . to teach such branches of learning as are related to agriculture and the mechanic arts . . . in order to promote the liberal and practical education of the industrial classes in the sev-

T. D. Yensen.*—As my information is of a negative nature, I think it belongs under this paper. We are particularly interested in magnetic materials and we would like very much on occasions to make use of powder metallurgy. We have tried repeatedly to use powder metallurgy in preparing our nickel alloys but always. with negative results; that is, we cannot get as good magnetic properties by powder metallurgy as we can by starting with a molten material. We have tried by all possible means to make materials' like 50 per cent iron-nickel alloys by powder metallurgy. The compacts can be regularly lorged and rolled but no matter what we do in the way of annealing, the magnetic properties come out very much poorer than if we start with molten material. F. V. Lenel. †—I want to mention one characteristic of articles made from metal powders which distinguishes them from die castings; that is, their wear resistance. Die castings usually are made from zinc or aluminum alloys and a few copper-zinc alloys; all of them are comparatively soft and not very wear resistant. I know of a number of cases where powder metallurgy rather than the die-casting method was used for producing a certain part because higher wear resistance was needed than could be attained in die castings. A, J. LanghammeR.*—The subject of powder metallurgy is somewhat difficult to discuss, and portray, in the time that his been allotted. Most of you would rightly be bored if we went into details. However, I will cite one incident that possibly will help illustrate some of the potentials. Last summer I was in Washington and met Navy officials for the purpose of studying the possibility of making a certain part by powder metallurgy. The part is highly intricate and I happened to remark that the material cost would be high; that is, the cost on one raw material. Promptly a high-ranking Navy officer said: "Mr. Langhammer, if you must pay x dollars a pound for the raw material, but achieve the desired results, the cost of the finished part would still be low."

Oil-well depletion curves, to be of value, should show when a well or lease may no longer be operated at a profit. The difference, at any time, between the total expenditures and the total income of a lease or well may be called the lease status. Plotting this lease status against time will give a curve subject to more accurate and different interpretations than the barrels-time curves. According to the hypothetical barrels-time curves shown in Fig. 1, well A, at the end of 16 mo., is producing twice as much oil as well B and will continue to produce for another year whereas well B will cease producing in about 6 months. There is no question as to the importance of the part played by the retort in modern zinc smelting. A satisfactory retort should have properties that will result in resistance to slagging action and fire cracks, and have no tendency, or at least only a small tendency, to soften and bend under furnace heat. The life and cost of a retort also are extremely important factors. The trend in zinc smelting during the past few years has been toward longer retorts and .higher charge density. This is caused by the fact that the diameter is limited to 9 or 10 in. because of heat penetration difficulties in larger sizes. Consequently, increasing the length of the retort and density of charge offers the only practical means of increasing the amount of zinc produced per retort. The stiff-ness of a retort perhaps is the most important factor, as slag accumulates in the bottom of a retort which has sagged and very quickly cuts through, often ruining the retorts below. The development of the high-silica retort is a result of the demands made by the trend toward heavy charges. Materials Used for High-silica Retorts The materials used in the manufacture of high-silica retorts at East St. Louis are fireclay, grog and silica flour. Analyses are given in Table 1. The fireclay comes from the St. Louis district. The grog consists of clean firebrick culls, and the silica flour, a very high-grade material, is purchased in the form of a flour that has been ground through 140 mesh.

The property of the Spring Valley Coal Company, situated in Bureau county, Ill., comprises something more than 30,000 acres of coal-lands, on which have been opened four mines, designated as Nos. 1, 2, 3 and 4. Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4 are plans of the first three; and Fig. 7 is a view of the surface-plant at No. 4, the workings of which it is not necessary to illustrate, as this mine has been practically merged in No. 2. No. 4 shaft is only 500 feet from No. 2, and both are ventilated by the same fan, and are in the same circle of air-supply. In speaking of No. 2, we now include No. 4. The system pursued in all the mines is " long-wall advancing," and the shafts are all vertical. The seam worked is locally and commercially known, in the Illinois series, as No. 3; but its position in the geological series is that of No. 2. It averages in thickness about 42 inches, arid has no partings, but mines in rectangular lumps, which stand a large amount of handling before breaking. An analysis made from Colliery No. 1 gave the following : Per cent. PROGRESS on the earth depends to a large extent upon the rapid inter-change of ideas and commodities between the various nations of the world. The smooth flow of commerce, by which these ideas and com-modities move, is accelerated by accurate and complete maps of the various land and water areas of the earth, The production of accurate maps depends upon a complete knowledge of the figure and dimensions of the object to be charted, therefore a knowledge of the shape of the earth is a prime necessity for accurate charting purposes. Gravity observa-tions were first undertaken to aid in determining the shape of the earth so that the geodetic surveys of its land and water areas might be more accurately connected to form an undistorted map. A large part of the earth's surface is water and it is therefore necessary to get gravity values at sea as well as on land before a complete and accurate figure of the earth can be determined. Dr. F. A. Vening Meinesz, of Holland, was the first scientist to perfect a pendulum instrument that would accurately measure gravity at sea. He had previously developed a multiple pendulum apparatus for measur-ing gravity upon swampy and unstable land areas in Holland and it was therefore quite natural that he should adapt the instrument to give accurate results upon a still more unstable support, the surface of the sea. His instrument as perfected gives satisfactory results when mounted in gimbals on any vessel where the roll and pitch are not more than about 5° and where the vibrations from rotating machinery and wave action are not large enough to cause the pendulums to shift on the knife-edges. This degree of stability can be obtained on surface craft only in protected waters or on very calm days. Therefore, Dr. Meinesz mounted his instrument in a. submarine so that he could submerge below the disturbed surface waters and get the desired stability in nearly any kind of weather by simply diving to greater depths. Most of the gravity-at-sea work has been done with a Meinesz instrument and a very large number of the observations have been made by Dr. Meinesz himself. Two Opposed Interpretations of the Tonopuh Structure.—The important geological publications concerning the Tonopah min-ing-district are those of Spurrl aud of Burgess.² In these publications are presented fundamental differences of interpretation, which are the more interesting because both authorities have had ample opportunity for observation, and because both are geologists of proved ability. I was vastly puzzled to know which had the better of it, and in order that I might reach a conclusion in my own mind, I recently spent some time in the district going over the physical evidence. Surprising as it may seem, this evidence looks conclusive. A review of it will, I believe, be of interest to those who are familiar with the previous publications. The general geological features of Tonopah are shown in Fig. 1, and the differences of interpretation referred to are outlined in the accompanying notes. Brieflyj Burgees regards the various rocks as flows, lying in the order of their deposition. Spurr regards them in part as flows, and in part as flat-lying intrusives. The disagreement, then, concerns the rocks regarded on the one hand as intrusives, and, on the other hand, as flows. These rocks are chiefly the so-called calcitic andesitc, the upper rhyolite, and the lower rhyolite. In this paper, the stacking fault energy has been measured by the rolling texture method in a series of ten alloys which comprise successive additions of Cr, Mo, Fe, and C to pure nickel, eventually resulting in an alloy of the composition of Hastelloy alloy X. The alloys studied here are single-phase, solid solutions with the exception of two alloys in which some undissolved particles of "primary" carbide have been retained. It is found that successive additions of chromium, molybdenum, and iron all lower the stacking fault energy, with iron having only a minor effect. The stacking fault energy is found to increase when carbon is added in solid solution. The results from the rolling texture measurements are correlated with thin foil observations of dislocation substructures in these alloys. In a recent paper' it was pointed out that the dislocation substructure of various superalloy matrices could be classified into three broad categories based on 'high', 'medium', and 'low' stacking fault energy. It has also been demonstrated2 that the dislocation substructure in each of these categories has a well defined role in the nucleation of strengthening precipitates which is different from the role played by the dislocation substructure in other categories. Thus, it becomes desirable to understand the influence of various solute elements on the stacking fault energy and hence on the dislocation substructure of the matrix, before any further development of superalloys by mi-crostructural predesign can be undertaken. Recently, Beeston and France have studied the influence of increasing solute additions on the stacking fault energy of a series of binary nickel-base alloys relevant to the Nimonic series using the rolling texture method, and have then estimated the effect of a given alloy addition in five commercial Nimonic alloys. However, comparison with stacking fault energy data from other investigations''5 suggests that the influence of a given solute element in a nickel-base binary system is not necessarily the same in a ternary or more complex superalloy system. Accordingly, the present work was undertaken to study the effect of successive addition of solute elements to pure nickel, the final composition being the nominal composition of Hastelloy X. The rolling texture method of stacking fault energy measurement was used since it can be used for the whole range of stacking fault energy values and does not have the disadvantage of, say, the Node method which is only applicable to low values of stacking fault energy. In addition, the rolling texture method provides a means of determining the stacking fault energy which is statistically more significant than that provided by other methods. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES Button heats of alloys of the compositions shown in Table I were prepared. Each button was remelted not less than four times. After a slight deformation (approximately 5 pct) all alloys were homogenized at 2200°F except alloys, H . I, and J. Alloys H and I were solution heat treated at 2150°F and alloy J at 2282OF. The buttons were cold worked by rolling, using "end-to-end" passes and intermediate anneals at the homogenization temperatures mentioned above. After each annealing treatment the samples were rapidly water quenched to avoid any precipitation. In alloys F and I, however, a few particles of "primary" carbides were retained even after the homogenization treatments at the temperatures mentioned above. Part of the solution heat treated material was cold worked to 0.04-in.-thick sheet and the penultimate reduction was -50 pct of deformation as recommended by Dillamore et al. All annealing was carried out in vacuo within sealed quartz capsules. Some of the material from each alloy was rolled down further to 0.004 in. strip for thin foil transmission electron microscopy specimens. Specimens of this strip were annealed at the homogenization temperature for 1 hr and then strained 7 pct by rolling at room temperature. Thin foils were prepared from the strip specimens by the 'window" technique using an Ethanol-Perchloric acid electrolyte at 32°F and a voltage of 22 v. Stainless steel cathodes were employed. All transmission electron microscopy was performed in a JEM-7 electron microscope using an accelerating voltage of 100 kv. Specimens from the 0.04 in. sheet which had been rolled -60 pct in the final pass were electropolished to remove the surface layers to a depth of approximately 0.002 in. MUCH work has been done on the decomposition of the p phase at the eutectoid composition, 11.9 pct Al, in the Cu-A1 system by Smith and Lind-lief,' Mack,' Klier and Grymko,3 Haynes,4 and others.
