ROCK-DRILL steel has an important bearing on costs in many mining operations, both directly and indirectly. Direct factors include such items as shop expense, steel consumed per ton of ore produced, cost of distribution and the dust hazard. The latter, although no specific amount may be assigned to it, is an ever-present problem, and is receiving increased attention as the science of mining progresses. Indirectly drill-steel performance affects consumption of compressed air, mainte-nance of drills and drilling speed. The latter, in turn, increases or retards the tempo of mining and development. These factors, while not all inclusive, are preponderant in their importance. Thus it is evident that in an extensive operation drill-steel expense may run to many thousands of dollars and that thoughtful research leading toward more efficient practice is warranted.

This paper is a preliminary report on the occurrence and distribution of economically interesting heavy minerals (kyanite, sillimanite, staurolite, zircon, monazite, ilmenite, leucoxene, rutile) in sands from the sea floor surface of the offshore area, Alabama-Mississippi. Weight percent of heavies derived from the +60 portion of 97 samples is contoured in [Fig. 1]. Five hundred grains from 42 of the heavy mineral separates were identified and sized microscopically; the data were converted to weight percent for each mineral species and are summarized in [Table 1]. Heavy Mineral Distribution In the Gulf, there is a general westward decrease [(Fig. 1)] in maximum abundance of heavies from 2.4% north of Sand Island at the mouth of Mobile Bay to slightly over 1.0% south of Petit Bois Island and a corresponding decrease in the Mississippi Sound from 1.4%, north of Dauphin Island to slightly over 0.25% north of Horn Island. Average concentrations of heavies for different areas are found in Table 1. There is westerly longshore transport in this area; the interaction of the longshore current with discharge from Mobile Bay and disruptions of the current by Sand Island, possibly aided by a shoaling effect, appear to be the cause of the preferential deposition and concentration of heavies (2.4%) north of Sand Island in 10 to 14 ft of water.

Charles T. Holland (Head, Dept. of Mining Engineeri*, Virginia Polytechnical Inst., Blacksburg, Va.) Mr. Wuerker has presented a very interesting discussion of the use of triaxial test methods for investigating the strength properties of rocks. Such methods, no doubt, eventually will develop considerable information of interest to those concerned with the design of mine layouts, particularly in the field of pillar design. From his discussion of my recent article, "Cause and Occurrence of Coal Mine Bumps" (Holland Mining Engineering 1958, p. 933-1002), it is evident that in one place at least I did not make my meaning clear to him and perhaps others. To clear the matter up I think it best to quote from the article, somewhat more fully than did Mr. Wuerker, as follows: "4) In actual operations — because rocksare not perfectly elastic, homogeneous, nor isotropic and because local yield does occur — the maximum stress as demonstrated by Phillips (Ref. 22, pp. 64, 65) and indicated by much experience in mining, does not occur at the walls of the opening but at a short distance inside the pillar. Furthermore, the maximum stress does not reach as great a value as theoretical considerations and laboratory experimental methods indicate.* Actual distance inside the pillar, measured from the wall, at which the maximum stress exists, has not been determined. Observations in many mines, however, indicate that this distance could have a mini-value of one to six or eight times the bed thickness and that it is probably affected by width and height of the opening, depth of cover, and relative values of the elasticity and plasticity of materials comprising the roof, floor, and coal seam. The actual value of the stress produced probably lies between the theoretical maximum and the average stress concentration that would be produced if the weight of the strata above the unsupported opening were evenly distributed over the pillars for a distance equal to the opening width." The footnote reference in the above quotation referred to the following: "*For example, the Pocahontas No. 4 coal bed in southern West Virginia is mined under cover up to 1800 ft thick. Development openings are driven 18 to 20 ft wide, and the bed is about 6 ft thick. According to the work of Panek, the tangential wall stress at mid-bed height under these conditions would reach values between 4000 and 5000 psi. Actual tests of 3-in. cubes of this coal show its compressive strength would be much less than this, perhaps as low as 400 psi. Yet the pillars usually show no evidence of failure in these headings. In this same bed at a depth of 800 ft, the author has seen an opening 225 ft between supports lying between two old groves approximately 1100 ft apart. According to the theoretical considerations, the stress in the pillar walls would have been about 18,000 psi, yet the pillar showed little or no evidence of weight. In view of these observations, it is clear that the wall stress does not attain the maximum values indicated by theory." (Underlining added to original wording.) By referring to Fig. 2A of my paper it will be noted that theoretically the maximum pillar stress would occur at the pillar wall, i.e., at the passageway surface of the pillar. Obviously this cannot be correct in the cases of stress ranging from 4000 to 18000 psi since the coal at the surface of the pillar is under no constraint and cannot have a strength much greater than 400 or 500 psi. Hence, my conclusion that the maximum stress does not occur at the wall but back in the pillar some distance from the wall. Since these stresses are pushed back in the pillar from the wall, it is also obvious that the loads transferred to the pillar from the opening will be spread over a greater area and hence Pillar stresses will not rise to the values postulated by theory and photoelastic experiment. Further since to visual inspection the coal along the pillar wall did not appear to be failed the conclusion was reached that the stress shift was caused by local elastic or plastic yield and by difference in the elastic modulus of the rocks composing the mine floor, mine roof, and coal bed. Later on under the heading "Strength of Mine Pillars" (pages 1000-1002) the effects of constraint is briefly described. Also a formula taking into account constraint is developed relating pillar strength to the uniaxial strength of coal and the L/T ratio of the pillar. Since my paper was written, reports of experiments conducted in South Africa (Denkhaus, et. al., 1959), in Sweden (Hast 19581, and in Canada (McInnes, et.al., 1959) reveal that the conclusion expressed relative to the existence of a low stress area existing around the edges of pillars and solid faces as described above is generally correct. But it seems possible that where the wall stress developed is less than the unconfined strength of the rock composing the pillar and where the roof, floor, and pillar

Oil recovery by the imbibition mechanism can be important in fractured carbonate reservoirs with a bottom water drive. Laboratory experiments were performed on water-wet carbonate rocks to model this process. The results are interpreted in light of the applicable scaling laws. The imbibition production behavior of a pillar of rock subjected to a slowly rising water table can be synthesized from data on total immersion experiments on small rock samples. If the rate of water table rise is slow enough and if the physical properties are such that the imbibition zone is of a small vertical extent, then only the final oil recovery on the small samples need be known. Applying laboratory imbibition data to a real reservoir should be done with caution because of possible wettability problems and the unknown behavior of two-phase flow in fractures. INTRODUCTION The spontaneous taking up of a preferential wetting fluid into a porous medium with the simultaneous expulsion of the contained fluid is termed imbibition. One of the many physical imbibition processes is the production of oil by the taking up of water into a water-wet reservoir rock. In certain types of heterogeneous reservoirs, e.g., fractured, it is realized that imbibition alone may be the dominant mechanism. Theoretical studies of imbibition oil recovery have followed several lines of attack. The behavior of certain mathematically tractable and conceptually simple models have been analyzed. Birks1 considered a bundle of vertical capillaries model, while Perotti et al.2 and Kelemen3 used a model of a series of vertically oriented fractures. If the oil production behavior from a block of reservoir rock is known, then the cumulative behavior of a vertical stack of these blocks subjected to a rising water table can be determined by a method outlined by Aronofsky et al. 4 Knowing the capillary pressure and relative permeability functions should uniquely set the imbibition behavior for a given sample. Solutions of the partial differential equations describing the process, however, present some formidable problems. Digital computer techniques have been applied to displacement processes in which the capillary pressure has been included.5"8 More recently, similar techniques have been used by Blair 9 to calculate countercurrent imbibition behavior. The fact that imbibition behavior is described by the usual fluid flow equations (Darcy's Law and continuity equation) implies that the derived scaling laws should apply equally to this situation. Use of model experiments to study imbibition has been employed by Graham and Richardson 10 and Mattax and Kyte,11 who actually tested the scaling law applicability. This study is concerned with scaled model imbibition experiments on water-wet carbonate rocks. Of particular interest is the slowly rising water table experiment. This simulates a highly fractured reservoir with the water table rising uniformly through the vertical fracture system. Experiments were performed on different sized samples and with different rates of rise of the water-oil interface surrounding the rock pillar. Total immersion imbibition experiments on smaller rock samples were performed to test the basic linear scaling laws and to see if these simpler tests could be used to synthesize the rising water table experimental results. THEORY IMBIBITION SCALING LAWS Scaling laws for the flow of two incompressible immiscible fluids in a porous medium have been presented by Rapoport.12 These are derived directly from Darcy's Law for the individual phases and the continuity equation. Results from a laboratory model experiment will duplicate those from some reservoir prototype if a constant proportion is maintained among the three forces acting on the fluids — the capillary pressure gradient, the gravitational gradient and the flowing pressure gradient. THE Pocahontas coal field comprises the area in Tazewell County, Va., and Mercer and McDowell Counties, W. Va., in which Nos. 3 and 4 Pocahontas seams of bituminous coal are mined. It is a mountainous region with ridges rising 300 to 1000 ft. (91 to 305m.) above the very narrow valleys and, except for some poorly kept farms along the tops of the ridges and the area occupied by the mining and coking plants and villages, is wooded throughout. First shipments were made from Pocahontas in 1883. There are now, about 100 mines, 95 per cent. of which are drift mines. At the end of 1920, approximately 298,000,000 gross tons of coal had been produced and 35,000 acres of coal mined. No. 3 seam is from 4 to 10 ft. (1.2 to 3 m.) thick, but the change is gradual and the thickness fairly uniform in any particular locality. It has a streak of bone, about 2 in. (5 cm.) thick, io which the coal adheres on both sides. In parts of the field this bone is replaced by hard slate, usually from 2 to 4 in. thick. The seam has a slate or fireclay bottom and a draw-slate top. No. 4 seam is from 65 to 80 ft. (19.8 to 24 m.) above No. 3 seam, and of minable section only in the western part of the field. It is from 3 to 8 ft. thick and has two streaks off bone, each from 1 to 2 in. thick. It has a fireclay or slate bottom and is overlaid by from 4 to 24 in. of a laminated coal and slate, locally termed "black rash," which is separated from the coal seam by about 3 in. of slate. This "black rash" averages about 25 per cent. ash, but contains some clean coal. The coal in both seams is quite soft. Cleavage sufficiently well defined to exert an influence on the mining is rare. Overlying strata are slates, shales, and sandstones, the sandstones predominating, extending from .30 to 1000 ft. above No. 3 seam. The strata directly above the. draw slate of No. 3 seam, or "black rash" of No., 4 seam, and up to the first sandstone are usually slates or shales, about 10 ft. thick over the

It is appropriate to the place of meeting, and of interest to those members of the Institute whose attention has been more or less directed to Virginia during the past eleven years, to know the result of recent developments of the Virginia coal-field. While, during the late " boom," the attention of the industrial pioneers of Virginia was mainly directed to iron-ore deposits and manufacture, it is safe to say that the coal to which, at that time, comparatively little attention was turned, and which did not directly foster a growth of " boom " towns, will prove the most reliable source of mineral wealth in the State. At the time of the last Virginia meeting of the Institute, held at Roanoke, in 1883, the Wise county coal-field was untouched by a railroad, and its economic existence was scarcely considered. Although, in the meantime, a number of reconnaissances had been made, and a fair estimate of the value of the field formed, it was not until 1891, when the Norfolk and Western and the Louisville and Nashville railroads, respectively, completed their Clinch Valley and Norton extensions to a junction at Norton, Wise county, that any development took place, and not until 1892 were shipments of any importance made. THE mechanism of carbon oxidation in steelmaking processes has attracted considerable attention in recent years. The generally accepted model postulates that the reaction between carbon and oxygen occurs at the surface of CO bubbles that originate at the suitable nucleation points and subsequently rise through the metal bath.1-4 Although this model describes adequately the behavior of open-hearth type operations, it is not a satisfactory representation of carbon oxidation in oxygen steelmaking processes since it cannot account for either: i) the very high rate of oxidation per unit bath area,or ii) the commonly reported shapes of the curves showing the dependenie of the oxidation rate on the carbon concentration. The very high decarburization rates commonly encountered in oxygen steelmaking processes need no further elaboration; some typical plots of the rate of carbon removal against carbon concentration, taken from a publication by Li, Dukelow, and smith,' are reproduced in Fig. 1. It is seen from the curves that the decarburization tends to decrease from a peak or a plateau once the carbon concentration falls below a certain value; in the experiments reported, this critical value ranged from 1.2 to 0.2 wt pct C. The apparent dependence of the decarburization rate on the carbon concentration indicates that within this region phenomena associated with the transfer of car- bon must play an important if not predominant role. Since the concentration of oxygen in molten iron at steelmaking temperatures (removed from the immediate impact zone) is only about 0.1 wt pct,6 it is clear that simple simultaneous diffusion of carbon and oxygen to the surface of CO bubbles could not account for the rate of carbon transfer being the controlling step at carbon concentrations as high as 1.0 wt pct. The purpose of this communication is to present an alternative model which may explain at least qualitatively the apparent anomalies mentioned and may stimulate further experimental work. The Physical Model. It is suggested that the principal mechanism of decarburization is the reaction between CO bubbles and an emulsion consisting of molten iron and molten iron oxide particles in the vicinity of the "slag-metal interface9'.* This mech-

THE marker movements observed by Davies, Simnad, and Birchenall during the growth of magnetite on wustite have been misinterpreted. It is the purpose of this note to correct the original interpretation. In that investigation wustite specimens were prepared by oxidizing pure iron disks in water vapor until the iron was consumed. Argon was used as a carrier gas for the water vapor and on the complete conversion of the metal to its oxides ('FeO' plus a small amount (10 pct) of surface Fe3O) the water supply was bypassed and the specimens were annealed in argon alone in order to equilibrate the wustite with the overlying magnetite. After cooling, the magnetite was ground off, a crude magnetic test being employed to determine its complete removal. Radioactive silver streaks were then applied to the surface and the specimen was oxidized completely in water vapor to prevent hematite formation. After complete oxidation the markers were found to enclose about 80 pct of the magnetite with the other 20 pct lying outside the markers. This observation was interpreted to mean that oxygen transport was four times as great as iron transport during the growth of the magnetite. The conclusion would have been correct if, as in the case of wustite growing on iron, all the iron had started from one side of the marker and all the oxygen from the other side initially. Actually a material balance is required. For simplicity, take wustite to be exactly FeO, and magnetite to be Fe3O,. Then at the start of the reaction 3 FeO + O -> Fe,O., All of the iron and three-fourths of the oxygen of the final product will be within the marker inter- faces. The other fourth of the oxygen is in the gas phase outside the marker. From the experimentally determined final position of the markers simple calculation shows that one-fifth of the total iron has crossed the marker interface, while one-twentieth of the total oxygen has crossed in the reverse direction. The simplified result favors iron transport in the ratio four to one. However wiistite is not stoichiometric FeO. At 900°C, the temperature of the measurement, the composition is about FeO When the material balance for the same experimental result is repeated, assuming the product will be 1 mol of Fe3O4, it is found that 0.6 gram atoms of iron and 0.19 gram atoms of oxygen must have passed the marker in the same direction. (This is readily apparent from the reaction to form 1 mol of Fe3O4 SFeO The total oxygen supplied from the atmosphere is 0.61 gram atoms, but the iron which passes the marker interface, i.e., 0.6 gram atoms, requires 0.8 gram atoms of oxygen to convert it to Fe,O,.) If all the transport during magnetite growth is due to iron ion diffusion, then the marker would enclose about 85 pct of the final magnetite and the original measurement is in error by about 5 pct. This error is probably less than the uncertainty in locating the markers by autoradiography. The possibility also exists that the starting wustite was not quite saturated with oxygen and underwent further enrichment with consequent envelopment of the marker before magnetite caught up with the marker interface. In any case it appears that these measurements actually favor iron ion diffusion in magnetite overwhelmingly as the factor controlling its growth, although further experimental measurements are needed to eliminate the error in material balance described. Such studies are planned.

IT is with particular pleasure that I welcome the members of the Open-hearth Conference of the I American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers to this meeting, as I feel this is one of the most useful activities of the Institute in the field of ferrous metallurgy. For the information of our other members I might say the Open-hearth Conference was organized by Mr. Reynders when he was president, and is made up of open-hearth superintendents and metallurgists. All the plants are invited to send representatives, and practically all do, with the exception of the U. S. Steel Corporation. It meets twice a year to discuss various problems in connection with the manufacture of steel, and its minutes are published for the benefit of those attending, the expense being defrayed by the participating companies. This conference, .1 believe, should be a model for activities in the other branches of the work covered by this Institute. It works, not by reading formal papers, which we all know is not a very satisfactory method to bring out the experience of others, but rather by a round-table method of discussion. The spirit of the meetings is such that each member feels perfectly free to state his experience, and he gets as much as he gives. A series of topics for, discussion is brought to the attention of the chairman and after one is exhausted the next point is taken up. In this way there is a real interchange of ideas and experiences which cannot fail l to be of the greatest benefit to those attending. That these meetings are beneficial is evidenced by the "continued growing attendance and lively discussions at these half-yearly meetings.

The State School of Mines, University of Utah, is this year giving-a four weeks' course for prospectors-Jan. 8 to Feb. 3, 1917-covering the fundamentals of geology, mineralogy, mining and the metallurgical treatment of ores. There will be 36 lectures of 1 hr. each and about 20 laboratory periods, each 3 hr. in length. It is the purpose of the School of Mines to make the course entirely a practical one, and purely theoretical considerations will be omitted. The laboratory work is designed to supplement the lectures and-to give those taking the course a working knowledge of the principles involved. In order to bring the course within the reach of all, no laboratory fees will be charged, and the only fee will be a nominal one for registration in the University, of $1.00, but it is expected that those who attend will be genuinely interested in the work.

THE pole figure interpretation in a recent paper' on the torsion texture of copper was questioned in discussion,2 nd a simpler alternative interpretation was proposed. In the hope of reaching a positive decision in favor of one or the other, further studies were undertaken with 70-30 brass and Armco iron. This additional work has not answered all the questions about torsion textures, but the new pole figures do offer support for the original interpretation and show that the texture is more complicated than the alternative suggests. From the previous paper,' the appropriate method of describing the texture in a twisted bar is known to be a pole figure plotted on a plane tangent to the surface of the bar. The axes of the pole figure are chosen to coincide with directions in the tangent plane which are parallel and at right angles to the bar axis (the longitudinal direction, L.D., and the transverse direction, T.D.), for these directions define symmetry axes of the texture. Therefore any ideal orientation that might be selected to represent the texture gives the crystallographic plane parallel to the tangent plane and the crystallographic direction parallel to the axis of the torsion specimen. A unique texture was assumed in the original interpretation, and the four ideal orientations, (112) [111], (111) [112], (110) [001], and (112) [131], were used in its description. Of the four orientations, the first three provide possible slip directions along the direction labeled T.D. in the pole figure, which is one of maximum shear stress in a specimen being twisted. The alternative, however, simply considered the texture to be made up of two components, one a [Ill] alignment along the specimen axis with a random orientation about the axis as in the wire texture, and the other a superimposed orientation (110) [0011. Experimental evidence for this simpler interpretation was derived from two observations: 1—twisting did not alter the orientation of a single-crystal torsion specimen of a brass in which an octahedral plane was perpendicular (and a [Ill] direction parallel) to the axis, and 2—deformation bands with approximately the (110) [001] orientation were seen to develop in the crystal during the test. The new pole figures were obtained with a brass and an iron torsion specimen of 3/4 and 1 in. gage length diameter, respectively. After annealing, polishing, and twisting, seven rods, about 0.030 in. in diameter and with different orientations, were prepared from material near the surface of each specimen; these were required for the method of constructing pole figures by using a Geiger counter as developed by Norton.5 Since the shear strain gradient in plastic torsion is linear, it was readily computed that the material supplying the brass rods had been subjected to a shear strain of about 3.2, and that supplying the iron rods had received a shear strain of about 2. All details concerning specimen design, testing procedure, rod preparation, and use of the Norton technique can be found in ref. 1. Only this procedure was followed in working out the (111) and (100) pole figures for brass, Figs. 1 and 2. However, X-ray photograms were also involved in the construction of the (110) pole figure for Armco iron, Fig. 3. The photograms were made according to the conventional transmission diffraction technique using a small sheet taken parallel to the specimen surface and etched to a thickness of about 0.0025 in. With the postwar emergency for new housing and for new industrial buildings, much research has been done on lightweight aggregates for use in concrete and plaster. The trend toward lighter weight aggregates to relieve the dead load on the higher, steel framework buildings started toward the end of the last century. Progressively the requirements became more stringent, crushed bank slag, weighing 80 lb per cu ft as compared to 100 lb for crushed rock, was supplemented in some sections by foamed slags and expanded shales weighing from 40 to 60 lb per cu ft. In other sections cinders were used weighing from 40 to 50 lb, including sand. Sections favored with more recent vulcanism turned to pumice weighing from 30 to 60 lb, whereas other localities made use of diatomite, from 28 to 40 lb. Exfoliated vermiculite weighing from only 6 to 10 lb per cu ft came into use. As the search for lighter weights in aggregates continued so did the search for other desirable properties such as nailability, ease of cutting or channeling, and good insulation to both sound and heat. This search eventually led to a widespread interest in the expansion of perlite, or similar volcanic glasses, with the result that in 1946, the Office of the Housing Expediter' listed eleven firms reporting the operation of processing plants either on pilot or commercial scale producing aggregates weighing from 2 to 16 lb per cu ft. Geology Perlite is one of the large family of rocks originating from a granitic or acidic magma and generally has a "rhyolitic composition with a marked perlitic structure."² The name "perlite" is a derivation from "perlstein" originally given "to certain glassy rocks (hyaloliparites, hyalo-rhyolites) with numerous concentric cracks, from the fancied resemblance of broken out fragments to pearls."3 The cause of the perlitic texture is somewhat controversial. Johannsen attributes the texture to strain set up in the glass by cooling and describes the finding of peculiar, glassy balls, called marekanite, more or less rounded and showing concave indentations, which may be left when perlite is broken. Frank Rutley, on the other hand, in 1881, while working on vitreous rocks from Montana, observed that there was incipient or partially started crystallization with segregation of water toward the un-crystallized portion in all specimens of perlite examined. Further he observed evidence of strain around focii of crystallization to which he ascribed the development of the spherical cracking which gives the rock its perlitic texture.4 Widespread over the western and southwestern United States where Tertiary vulcanism is exposed, perlite commonly is associated with andesitic, basaltic, and rhyolitic lavas with inter-bedded tuffs and ash of Eocene age although some deposits are associated with rocks assigned to the Pliocene age.5, 6 n nearly all cases the perlite overlies water laid tuff beds or agglomerates or breccias of explosive nature, an outstanding exception being the occurrence of perlite as the chilled selvage of andesite intrusions.7'8 Available chemical analyses of per-lites from the western and southwestern United States indicate that they are varieties of leucorhyolites rather than of normal rhyolites, leucorhyolites having less than 5 pct of dark minerals, normal rhyolites having more than 5 pct. Densities of melts of the iron oxide-silica system in contact with solid iron have been measured by the maximum hubble pressure method in the composition range O to 37 wt pct SiOz and the temperature range 1255 to 1410C. The constitution of the melts is discussed and it is postulated that the structure changes from a dislribution of iron ions in an oxygen ion network at pure "FeO" to a distribution. of iron ions in a network of silicate tetrahedra at the orthosilicate composition. ISD The system iron oxide-silica is an important one metallurgically because it forms the basis of several complex slag systems in use for industrial smelting and refining processes. In recent years considerable work has been done on liquids of this system but there are still many points of difference among workers using different experimental techniques and theoretical approaches. Phase equilibria/"3 activity,4-6 electrical conductivity,' current efficiency,' transference number,8 viscosity,9 surface tension,'' and density" measurements have all contributed to an understanding of the problem. Measurement of density is one procedure which is directly indicative of liquid structure since any deviation from ideality must be a result of structural interactions. Liquids of the iron oxide-silica system are of special interest because this is one of the few metal oxide-silica systems on which measurements can be carried out conveniently over the entire composition range from pure oxide to silica saturation. This includes the range of high basicity which has received relatively little attention in other systems. Although one investigation of density in this system has previously been undertaken," the results seem of sufficient importance to warrant the independent redeter-mination reported here.

The phase changes occurring in low carbon steel during hot strip mill rolling are shown to be metallurgically significant when related to commonly used temperature control points, particularly finishing and coiling temperatures. In combination, these temperatures are shown to have an important influence on the level and uniformity of hardness, grain size, and carbide characteristics of the finished hot and cold rolled sheets. PRODUCTION of wide flat-rolled products ordinarily requires a number of operations in sequence to prepare the material for shipment to the customer. Most products are tailor-made for specific end uses, with each operation contributing certain properties to the finished material. Since the characteristics imparted to the semifinished product by a given step in processing carry through to the finished product in varying degrees, it is important that the intermediate stages of production of flat-rolled strip be carried out with the same care which characterizes the last or finishing operations. The step of hot strip mill rolling is common to the production of all of the various types of flat-rolled product; therefore, the hot strip rolling is an especially important point at which to recognize and control those variables which have an effect on the surface characteristics and metallurgical properties of the finished product and which influence the ease of conducting subsequent operations. Orders entered at a producing mill usually show an end use or describe an article or part into which the ordered product is to be fabricated. Applying his experience as to the properties necessary in a finished sheet to suit the end use and to perform successfully in the fabrication involved, the metallurgist selects a steel of suitable composition and deoxidation practice, and slabs of appropriate dimensions are produced for rolling on the hot strip mill. At this stage of processing, the metallurgist faces the problem of controlling hot strip mill practice in the light of his diagnosis of the properties necessary to meet the end use, paying due attention to the accompanying problem of producing a strip which can meet processing requirements on subsequent units in the mill. It is the purpose of this paper to describe some of the factors which he must consider in solving these problems and to indicate some of the principles which guide him. Equipment, Physical Requirements of the Strip, and Temperature Measurement The metallurgist must, of course, be familiar with the physical layout of the mill, the temperature-measuring equipment available, and the physical requirements of the hot strip product before he can apply his metallurgical knowledge to the problem; hence, the first section will consist of a brief discussion of these matters. The usual hot strip mill consists of reheating furnaces, five or six roughing stands including a scale-breaker, holding table, and second scalebreaker, six-stand finishing mill, runout table with spray cooling facilities, and coilers. A schematic diagram of a typical layout is shown in Fig. 1. Slab temperatures are primarily a function of heating time and furnace temperatures, while mill speeds, spray practice, drafting practice, available water pressure, temperature of the cooling water, cross sectional dimensions of the strip, coil size, and equipment limitations, either singly or in combination, determine what rolling temperatures are practical on a given hot strip mill unit. Thus, it is possible that a set of temperatures which can be utilized successfully on one mill cannot be used on another. However, adjustments in temperatures and rolling practice can usually be made to develop the desired metallurgical properties. In addition to the metallurgical properties developed through proper temperature control, the hot strip mill must also provide strip with certain physical attributes which may be summarized as follows: Strip Cross Section—The strip contour should conform to a section which will give the best results in the cold reduction operation. This is generally recognized as a strip with 0.001 to 0.003 in. crown or shoulder-to-shoulder convexity depending on width, and freedom from concave, flat, or wedge-shaped cross sections which cause metal buildup in cold reduction. Excessive drop off in thickness at the edges can also be very detrimental in cold reducing to light gages. Gage, Width, and Camber—All of these must be controlled. For example, rundown or increasing thickness from the front to the back of the coil results in nonuniformity in the thickness of hot-rolled sheet product and in added difficulty with gage and welds in cold reduction. Similarly, excessive width variation is the cause of guide trouble and excessive edge scrap at later stages of processing, while excessive camber is the source of a variety of processing troubles. Type of Oxide—Product intended for pickling should have a predominance of the type of oxide most easily removable in sulfuric acid. It is generally recognized that this type is obtained by use of maximum table cooling water and cold coiling

Viscous fingering was studied as it occurred in an open Hele-Shaw model (1 ft x 4 ft x 1/16 in.); it was also studied in the same model packed with 80-mesh glass beads during miscible displacements under unfavorable viscosity ratio conditions. It was determined that the lengths of 20 elements of the front were distributed normally around the average position of the combined elements under all conditions. Represented by the normal distribution, the length of the viscous fingers grew linearly with the distance traveled from the point of finger formation, increased with displacement velocity, and increased with increasing mobility ratio. Results obtained during the first few inches of displacement were of little or no use in predicting finger growth and/or finger length throughout the 4-ft model since the point of finger initiation cannot be predicted and would often occur several inches from the point of injection with either positive or apparent negative coordinates. The fingering occurring during a miscible slug displacement was much greater than would be predicted based upon the actual mobility ratios between in-place fluid and slug and between slug and following fluid, using the results described above for miscible displacement in the absence of a slug. Many of the experiments in the packed model showed that the rate of growth of the viscous fingers was diminishing toward the end of the displacement in the 4-ft long model, indicating that microscopic mixing, such as diffusion or dispersion, was decreasing the viscous fingering effect. INTRODUCTION Viscous fingering is a manifestation of a finger-shaped interface between displaced and displacing fluids occurring during typical miscible displacement projects for oil recovery. Its cause may be traced to the instability of a viscous fluid being displaced by a more mobile fluid. Viscous fingering takes on important significance in the miscible slug process 1.2 where it may be a dominant factor in determining minimum slug size. Experimental1-3 and theoretical4-7 studies of viscous fingering have been made by other investi- gators. However, an exhaustive study of the variables affecting viscous fingering had not been made. The present study was undertaken in an effort to determine the effects of some of the more obvious variables—such as mobility ratio, displacement velocity, distance displaced, and packing—upon viscous finger length and growth in a small laboratory model. It does not necessarily follow that conclusions reached by studying the results of this model study may be applied to the field. Future studies would have to evaluate the effect of model size on extension of these results. EQUIPMENT AND EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES A flow diagram for the equipment used in this study is shown in Fig. 1. Basically, it consisted of (1) a constant-rate pump for the injection of displacing fluid into (2) a model made up of two flat transparent plates spaced a small distance apart and (3) provisions for the production of fluid into a calibrated graduate. The displacing fluid contained a dye which allowed visual observation of finger spacing and length. The pump performed at rates from 2.5 cc/hr to 480 cc/hr, while pumping a light mineral oil into a bladder in a closed glass container holding the displacing fluid. The model was made up of two plates of 1-in. Plexiglass with dimensions 1-ft wide by 4-ft long. These were spaced 1/16 in. apart so that the internal model dimensions were 1-ft wide x 4-ft long x 1/16
