A visitor to the Northern anthracite coal-field in 1844 wrote: " History and song have hallowed the valley of Wyoming, and everything pertaining to it seems wrapped in an atmosphere of romance." Song and history have since been almost forgotten in the rush of enterprise and business energy, while the invested capital which has built 160 colliery plants, producing last year 17,031,826 tons of coal and giving employment to 50,000 men and boys, lends an atmosphere the inspiration of which is the very sustenance of prosperity and progress. The fundamental cause of this great valley's financial strength, however, rests on the fulness of its mineral wealth. Its mountains surround and its cities are built upon anthracite coal. Its foundation, physically, financially and socially, is coal. Its geology has governed its growth and developed its greatness. In 1768, ten years, prior to the celebrated Wyoming massacre, two Connecticut Yankees, named Gore, settled near Wilkesbarre, Luzerne County, and, burning Pennsylvania anthracite in their blacksmith's forges, were the first to utilize it as a fuel. Its first use in the household was also at Wilkesbarre, where, in 1808, Judge Fell burned it in an open grate. Carbondale, Wilkesbarre, and Scranton were early recognized as the coal centers of the field.

THE Charleston Section of the A. I. M. E. held a joint meeting with the National Coal Association and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers on May 6 and 7, at which 94 members and guests were registered. Mechanical operation of coal mines was the subject discussed. First on the program was a paper entitled "Rock Dusting in the Coal Mines of West Virginia," by R. M. Lambie, chief of the Department of Mines, and Gordon MacVean. It appears in full in the current issue of MINING AND METALLURGY, p. 290. J. E. Jones of the Old Ben Coal Corp. opened this discussion by describing the method of rock dusting employed in the mines of that company, giving many interesting details, incidentally referring to the use of rock dust in fighting mine fires. He described one case where a number of troughs was brought to within 150 ft. of the fire, and rock dust had been thrown in its direction. After each trough had been thrown the party advanced a few feet, where another trough was discharged. About 10 ft. were gained on each advance, until the party found they had advanced completely over the fire.

THE application of gas or air under pressure to obtain more oil from a sand which has been practically exhausted by ordinary production methods has been practiced to a limited extent for many years. Until recently such methods were confined to the Eastern fields, principally those of Ohio and West Virginia, where in many cases the production obtained after applying pressure for a few years was nearly equal to the total production prior to that time which had been obtained by the usual production methods.' As early as 1917, J. 0. Lewis1 called attention to this method of increasing the recovery of oil and cited the phenomenal results obtained by H. E. Smith, I. L. Dunn and 0. C. Dunn, who pioneered the application of air or gas pressure recovery methods. With this information available it would appear that other oil-producing sections of the country have been extremely slow to realize the advantages of repressuring. However, after a few successful projects in the Mid-Continent area, the oil producers appreciated the value of this method for obtaining further and profitable production from their practically exhausted leases and are now making extensive use of it. In general, it has been the practice to apply pressure to the sands when production has declined to a small yield per well. The purpose of this paper is to discuss some of the advantages which may be expected from returning gas under pressure to the oil sands during the early stages of development, before the rock pressure has been dissipated and the gas exhausted, and to stimulate discussion of this subject on which comparatively little actual field data are available.

It has long been known that minute quantities of foreign substances, when alloyed with steel, are capable of materially altering its physical properties. Thus, half a century ago, Faraday and Stodart, in England, discovered in the famous Indian steel, known as " wootz," small quantities of aluminum, from 0.0728 to 0.693 per cent., and attributed its extraordinarily good quality to the presence of such minute quantities of that metal. Since aluminum is now produced by electrolytic means on a large scale and at low cost, its addition to cast-steel has been frequently recommended of late. Chromium was alloyed with steel fifty years ago by the celebrated French metallurgist, Berthier, of Paris, and has recently been successfully applied to the same purpose by Holtzer, of Terre-Noire. In 1860 titanium was alloyed with crucible steel by Robert Mushet, of Coleford, the alloy containing up to 0.50 per cent. of titanium, which was extracted from Norwegian ilmenite. The titanium-steel was much vaunted by him for its excellent qualities. Rhodium, a very rare metal of the platinum series, was maintained by Berthier to improve steel materially in strength and hardness. Manganese has always been held by Sheffield steel-melters to provide steel with excellent qualities, and this influence was quite recently investigated by H. M. Howe and L. Campredon. Nickel was tried as an addition by Berthier, not to speak of gold, silver and platinum ; and nickel-steel has recently been brought into prominence by J. Riley and others, who recommend it for its great strength and toughness, particularly as material for armor-plates.

THE year 1937 started off most hopefully for the metal industry but the prices for nonferrous metals declined after reaching a peak in the first quarter. E. & M. J. average prices for March were: -electrolytic copper f.o.b. refinery for domestic delivery 15.775c., lead 7.19c., and zinc 7.38c. There was the usual talk of shortages and the accompanying peak in the market prices of securities of producing companies. In retrospect it now appears that this was the peak of general security prices as well and of most commodity prices. On Dec. 1 copper was back to 11c., lead to 5c., and zinc to 5.5c. At the same time metal security prices had fallen to less than 40 per cent of their March highs. This has not been a purely domestic phenomenon. Metal prices have followed a similar course in London, in spite of the fact that in all three metals a tariff wall separates the domestic market from the foreign. There is nothing in the record to suggest that planning has so far had any stabilizing effect on prices. It is doubtful whether anybody will he found to claim credit for the planning. Strong evidence supports the conclusion that domestic demand for these and the other metals has been dammed back by the uncertainties confronting those who are considering long term construction commitments. This is particularly true with the public utilities, who are the largest consumers of copper and lead. If the plans were designed to maintain employment rather than to maintain political control of the Government, it would appear that they should be discarded. The course of the steel industry has been followed so closely in the press that no comment is necessary to indicate its similarity.

PROBLEMS in expressing, interpreting, and using size-distribution data recur in many phases of mineral dressing; therefore it is desirable that size analyses be expressed in such a form, either numerically or graphically, that comparisons can be made readily. The size distribution of comminuted material is a result of a specific physical operation on the material and therefore should be governed by some definite physical principle, or cause-effect relation. Although this principle has not been discovered, it has been found that the size distribution of comminuted, homogeneous solids may be expressed by relatively simple mathematical equations. Two equations in particular, proposed by Gaudin1 and by Rosin and Rammler,2 respectively, have stood out, both having wide demonstrated ranges of application. The form and the method of application of the two appear almost irreconcilably different on the surface, but, as will be shown, they are asymptotic in the fine sizes when expressed in the same units. This paper gives the results of a further study of the Gaudin and Rosin-Rammler relations, made with the object of developing a form of size-distribution equation that will be more usable and more significant-particularly in comminution studies, both for interpreting the nature of size distribution and for evaluating surface. The work is summarized in the following: I. An equation relating cumulative per cent finer to particle size in the fine sizes is derived from Gaudin's original equation. That equation relates weight per cent retained on one size and through the next larger size in a geometric series of sizes to size (of the retaining screen, for example). 2. Comparisons with Gaudin's equation and with the Rosin-Rammler equation show that the cumulative equation applies to the fine sizes of all size distributions that fit either of these earlier relations, and, furthermore, has some advantages over each. 3. A simple graphical method of surface calculation based on the cumulative-equation plot is evolved and illustrated. 4. Additional confirmation of the cumulative equation was obtained in the more severe test of sizing down to the limit of a sedimentation balance a sample of jaw-crushed quartz. The equation was closely followed over a 20o-fold range in size, from approximately 0.4 mm. (35 mesh) down to 0.0023 mm. (2.3 microns), the lower limit of the size analysis made. There is no indication that the equation will not hold further to well below 2.3 microns. 5. Calculations of the surface produced in the jaw-crushing test mentioned above showed that at least 8o per cent of the total new surface was on particles finer than 35 mesh (about ½ 5 of the crusher setting). AT A MEETING of the Shareholders of the Russo-Asiatic Cons. Ltd., in London, Oct. 23, 1922, LESLIE URQUHART, chairman of the com- pany made the following statement:* I come now to our recent negotiations with the Soviet Government and to the agreement which has resulted from them. You will remember that the conference at The Hague broke up without having achieved anything very definite. It was not, however, a failure. It elicited from M. Litvinoff an offer which will, I think, come to be regarded as a milestone in the progress of Russia from a ruinous and unpracticable Communism towards a modified form of capitalism. The offer made by M. Litvinoff at The Hague amounted in effect to this: that in return for political recognition on our part the Soviet Government would first acknowl-edge its liability for Russia's national foreign debts, and, secondly, would give the original foreign owners of property in Russia effective compensation. A very great advance that. It showed-and there have been many other signs to confirm it-how real and persistent has been the internal evolution of Russia during the past year from Marxism to the economics of the Western world. I will not now detain you with the reasons why M. Litvinoff's highly promising and significant offer came to nothing. The fact that it had been made and the further fact that The Hague Conference had separated indefinitely were the important things. The first fact seemed to indicate that the Soviet rulers, after all, proved to be people with whom one could do business. The second fact rather emphatically showed that the way to do business with them was not by unwieldy poly-glot conferences of ministers, officials and experts representing a few dozen different governments and a few dozen different sets of national interests. That method had been tried at Genoa. It was tried again at The Hague. Each time it failed, and having failed it left the road clear for a simpler and more direct approach.

The first step in processing municipal solid waste (MSW), principally household waste, for resource recovery is usually shredding. A trommel has been investigated as a step to precede shredding. This way abrasive inorganic materials, such as stones and metals, would be removed prior to shredding, thus lowering the amount of feed and hence maintenance on the shredder. In addition, friable materials such as glass would be removed in large pieces, rather than pulverized too mall to process for recovery. The utility of a trommel for these purposes was investigated on a pilot scale using a unit 9 ft diam by 10 ft long with 4-in. square clear openings. Experimental results indicate that up to approximately half of the MSW may be removed as -4-in. material prior to shredding. The -4-in. fraction contains approximately 70% of the metals and 95% of the glass present in the MSW feed to the unit. Scale-up and cost information necessary for the design of a 60 to 70 tph unit is developed.

EFFECTIVE use of rotary kiln waste gases to preheat dry pulverized materials has been demonstrated in full-scale operation at the Allentown Portland Cement Co. plant, Evansville, Pa. Pulverized raw materials are preheated in suspension in the gas stream in a multi-stage counterflow process which draws the gases through a series of cyclone collectors. Upon entering the first cyclone stage the material, continuously delivered and suspended in the gas stream, is successively collected and resuspended until it discharges through the kiln feed pipe. Gas and material contact time is thus prolonged, providing a high degree of heat recuperation with a very low temperature differential between gas and material at the final stage. The suspension preheater, developed by Klockner-Humboldt-Deutz AG of Cologne, Germany, was first installed at the Norddeutsche Huette plant, Oslebshausen, Germany. Similar preheaters are now in operation at three other German cement plants. The first American installation, at the Allentown Portland Cement Co. plant, was designed and manufactured by Fuller Co. of Catasauqua, Pa., Humboldt's licensee for the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

The kinetics of dissolution of silver in cyanide solutions under oxygen pressure have been investigated over a wide range of conditions with a view to establishing the reactions involved and the factors which influence the rate. The results indicate that the rate is determined principally by the transport of reactants in solution to the silver surface. The thermodynamic features of the reaction with particular reference to the influence of pH and CN- are also discussed and summarized in the form of potential-pH diagrams. METALLIC silver is readily attacked and dissolved by cyanide solutions in the presence of oxygen. This reaction has long been recognized and extensively applied1 in the well-known cyanide process for the extraction of silver from its ores. While this process has been subjected in the past to a number of investigations2,3 both of a practical and fundamental nature, some features relating to the chemistry of the reactions involved, the role of oxygen, the nature of the rate-controlling step, and the effects of pH and certain reagents such as lime, are still not fully understood. It was felt that this situation justified a further investigation of the reaction, made with a view to obtaining a better understanding of its kinetics and mechanism. In the present investigation rate curves for the dissolution of silver were determined over an extensive range of carefully controlled reaction conditions. By carrying out the reactions in a pressure vessel, the partial pressure of oxygen, and hence its concentration, could be varied widely. The influence on the reaction of other variables including temperature, pH, and the concentrations of cyanide, peroxide, and other salts was also examined. The results of these kinetic studies are presented and discussed in this paper, together with a summary of available thermodynamic information relating to the possible reactions which can accompany the attack on silver by aqueous solutions of cyanide and oxygen. Chemistry and Thermodynamics of the Reaction The chemistry of the reactions of gold and silver with aqueous cyanide solutions has been the subject of several recent reviews.'." It has been proposed' that the following reaction occurs when silver dissolves in cyanide solutions in the presence of oxygen: 4Ag + 8CN- + 0, + 2H.0 -t 4Ag(CN); + 40H- [la] An equation of this form, for the corresponding dissolution of gold, was first suggested by Elsner." Bodlaender5 proposed a similar overall reaction, but suggested that it took place in two steps, 2Ag + 4CN- + O2 + 2H2O ? 2Ag(CN),- + 2OH- + H2O2 [2a] followed by 2Ag + 4CN- + H2O2? 2Ag(CN); + 20H- [3a] On the other hand, Janin- suggested that the dissolution of gold can occur with the liberation of hydrogen, rather than by reduction of oxygen. The corresponding equation for the dissolution of silver is 2Ag + 4CN- + 2H20 -t 2Ag(CN); + 20H + H2 [4a] All these reactions represent oxidation-reduction processes and may be resolved into the corresponding separate oxidation and reduction components. The oxidation step involves the formation of the argentocyanide ion and is the same for all the reactions, i.e., Ag + 2CN? Ag(CN)2 + e [51 However, reactions la, 2a, 3a, and 4a differ in the nature of the reduction steps which are, respectively, O2 + 2H2O + 4e ? 4OH- [lb] O2 + 2H2O + 2e ? A CERTAIN amount of interest has been indicated recently in the resistance to oxidation at high temperatures of iron-aluminum alloys (rich in iron). Hautman1 published a paper in which some interesting results are given. According to his paper, only alloys containing at least 8 per cent aluminum indicate a marked improvement in their resistance to oxidation. At about this aluminum content, however, alloys become brittle, which considerably reduces their commercial value. About two years ago the author performed a series of experiments, the results of which are presented here. A series of iron-aluminum-carbon alloys was prepared by melting electrolytic iron, aluminum and high-carbon iron alloy in an induction vacuum furnace.2 The list of these alloys is given in Table 1. MAGNESIUM alloy tubing and hollow shapes are finding increasingly wider usage in practical applications today. Square and rectangular tubing and hollow shapes find [ ] greater diversification in use than standard round tubing. Typical applications are roller conveyors, ladder rungs, spools, furniture, tank car loading tubes, athletic equipment, and business machine parts. In general, the amount of tubing and hollow shapes produced represent a minor portion of the magnesium extrusion business. The magnesium alloys in which tubing and hollow shapes are being produced together with typical properties are presented in Table I. MI A alloy is a low cost alloy possessing good welding and stress corrosion characteristics together with moderate formability and corrosion resistance. It is widely used for low strength applications. AZ31 B, alloy is used for moderately stressed applications and possesses good corrosion resistance and formability with fair welding characteristics. AZ61 A alloy has slightly higher physical properties than AZ31 B alloy together with good formabil- [ ] ity and corrosion resistance but slightly poorer welding characteristics. AZ80 A, ZK60 A-F, and ZK60 A-T5 alloys are used where the maximum in physical properties is required. AZ80 A alloy possesses fair corrosion resistance but with formability and welding characteristics inferior to' the other alloys. ZK60 A-F and ZK60 A-T5 alloys, while only recently offered for com¬mercial use, are finding favor due, to the higher permissible extrusion rates. These alloys possess greater toughness than AZ80 A alloy and, while of moderate formability at room temperature, are very formable at 300° to 500°F. The major portion of tubing and hollow shape production at the present time is in AZ3I B alloy. The gas-lift is a comparatively recent development in the Oklahoma and Kansas fields. It was used to some extent in the old Dilworth field several years ago, but the first extensive installations were made in the Tonkawa and Garber fields in Oklahoma early in the year 1926. Compressor Equipment During the early development of the system, the equipment used generally consisted of small tandem compressors of about 250 cu. ft. per min. displacement, driven by automotive-type gas engines, using a short belt drive. These compressors were first installed at the individual wells largely as an experiment. After the experimental installations had proved the method a success, it was considered economically advisable to centralize the compressor equipment in strategically located stations. However, as the information in regard to "gas-lift flowing life" was anything but definite, and the most optimistic estimates in regard to it did not exceed six months, portability of equipment was still the first consideration in the minds of many operators, who continued to install srnall semi-portable com-pressors in their centralized stations. As electric power became available in the fields, the electric motor came rapidly into use as the prime mover for the small compressors. The operating cost of this motor is greater than that of the automotive-type gas engine for the same power output, but the greater continuity of service tends to balance the extra cost. Aside from the semi-portable units, a number of strictly portable compressors were used. These consisted of automotive-type gas engines direct connected to vertical compressors. The unit was assembled on one base and could be mounted on wheels or skids as desired. The chief objection to these, in the writer's opinion, was their small capacity— approximately 150 cu, ft. per min.—which made it necessary to use two, three, and sometimes more units per well, thus making the installation rather costly. However, they have been found valuable for test purposes and emergencies, where installation time is an important factor.

YOUR speaker has long sought an opportunity to review the many differences between the subject matter called economic geology and the duties of a practicing economic geologist. As the subject was taught in my student days, professors teaching courses in economic geology paid little attention to what we now call industrial minerals. Certainly they were not concerned with problems involving production and marketing, but only with the origin of such mineral deposits as the Stassfurt potash deposits; with other evaporites, such as salt, gypsum, and Chilean nitrate; with the possible modes of formation of sulfur in salt domes; and the causes of asbestiform mineralization. Of course, much time and thought was given to the mineral identification and sequence of deposition of the minerals in pegmatites. The fact that such deposits actually produced commercial feldspar, mica, beryl, and lithium minerals for sale in industry was of minor importance. These observations lead us to pause to inquire, perhaps facetiously, what is and what is not to be included in the science of economic geology?

Austenite is often defined as a solid solution of carbon or carbide in a nonmagnetic form of iron. Conversely, magnetic measurements are often used by investigators for the purpose of detecting the degree of austenite decomposition after an iron alloy has been subjected to certain thermal or mechanical treatments. Association of the magnetic state with the gamma-phase decomposition is often extended to the alloys of iron with elements other than carbon. Definition of austenite as a nonmagnetic solid solution cannot be accepted in the light of available information without certain reservations. The relation of magnetic transformations with the gamma-phase decomposition in the complex alloys of iron has never been rigorously proved. The present investigation deals primarily with the magnetic transformation that occurs in carbon steels during the quenching process. The work was further limited to a study of magnetic transformation in carbon steels quenched at such rates as are necessary to retain the product of austenite decomposition in a martensitic state. Peevious Work Considerable information has accumulated in the literature with respect to the magnetic transformation in alloys of iron, but nearly all of it relates to transformations under the conditions of equilibrium between the phases of the alloy. An investigation was carried out to determine the variables affecting the coiling temperature of strip in the 56-in. hot strip mill. After statistical treatment, equations have been derived to determine the temperature drop between mill and coiler for both full spray (top and bottom) and top spray only practices. The individual influences of each variable in the temperature drop were derived for both practices. Limitations of the present practices were shown and adjustments in cooling for increased rolling speeds were suggested. A method of estimating the required number of sprays, their spacing, pressure, etc., to achieve a desired temperature drop is developed. MAXIMUM finishing temperature of a hot strip mill is mainly determined by the rolling speed, gage, and the temperature of the bar entering the mill. This finishing temperature may be limited by the maximum admissible coiling temperature in cases when either the cooling facilities on the runout table are not adequate or, more generally, when the cooling capacity of the runout table and the production capacity of the continuous mill are out of balance. Some time ago, the balance between these two factors was not considered detrimental to production. Recently, a new drafting schedule was introduced which increased the production rate, the entry temperature, and hence the finishing temperature. Thus, the restriction of the maximum specified coiling temperature became an important factor for many of the thicker gages. An investigation of the factors determining the coiling temperature may be, therefore, of considerable importance. A brief description of the available equipment will be a useful illustration of the techniques and methods used for this investigation. The 56 in. continuous hot strip mill is composed of six 4-high stands each containing two 221/2-in. diam work rolls and two 45-in. diam back-up rolls. Either of the last two stands can be used as the finishing stand. Which stand is used is dependent on the total percentage of reduction to be taken over the whole train, i.e., on the entry thickness and the final gage. The characteristics of these last two stands are given in Table I. Table I. Finishing speeds in general use for varying gages are shown in Table 11. These speeds may change with an increase or decrease in the entry temperature of the strip. GRAIN boundary sliding plays a part in the high-temperature deformation of polycrystalline solids, and many investigations1-11 have been carried out to determine the deformation contributed by this mechanism. The principal method employed has been to measure one of the components of the grain boundary displacement, see Fig. 1, at a large number of boundaries, and from the mean value so obtained to calculate the elongation contributed by sliding. A formula connecting these mean values and the elongation contributed is evidently required, and many have been derived. They are usually of the form where Egh is the tensile elongation contributed by sliding, is the mean value of the component, x, N is the mean number of grain boundaries intersecting a line of unit length, and K is a dimensionless parameter known as the averaging factor. Table I summarizes the equations used by various investigators. Examination of these shows that their derivations usually involve doubtful assumptions, and are often in serious error. The purpose of this note is to point out that rigorous solutions to the problem of calculating Egb from x have been available in the literature for some years.' Since this is so little known, and also the original derivations do not make some important points clear, it is proposed to rederive the basic equations. These will be extended further, and the conditions in which the extended equations may be applied will be indicated. The mean values of the components of the sliding vector (I, d, and I:, Fig. 1) will depend on the method by which boundaries are sampled in order to make measurements.3,11 Boundaries are usually sampled by marker lines parallel to the stress axis, or lines perpendicular to the stress axis, the measurement being made at the point where the marker line intercepts the boundary. We will denote the mean values determined by these various sampling methods as follows. lT, dT and vT are mean values obtained by making measurements at pointswhere a transverse line intercepts the boundary while lL, dL, and vl, are the mean values from a longitudinal line. DURING recent years thermal drying of fine coal has increased at a tremendous rate, but very little discussion of the several excellent units has found its way into print. This is particularly true for operating and maintenance costs, and the operator who is faced with his first fine coal drying installation must depend chiefly on hearsay when trying to determine what his drying costs will be. This article presents the maintenance and operating costs for the seven drying units now installed in preparation plants of Pittsburgh Consolidation Coal Co. and lists other cost information that should be obtained before any particular drying unit is selected.

A GLANCE at the list of papers1 that have been published since 1920 on the general subject of flotation suggests the variety of ideas that exist regarding the underlying cause of the phenomenon. Among these ideas, we find several coherent theories, but none that adequately and completely explain the phenomenon. Ralston2 and Bains3 suggested an electrical theory which has to do with the attachment of mineral particles to a bubble by the attraction of unlike electrical charges. This theory has its root in the fact that a bubble of air in pure water is electrified in such a way that the surface is negatively charged while the body of the water is positively charged. This result, which was first discussed by Helmholtz, also obtains when the water contains anything except a high concentration of hydrogen ions, or ions which are trivalent or tetravalent. The theory also holds that the mineral particles have positive charges on their surfaces, and so there is attachment between bubble surface and mineral particles by the old law of electrostatics, which states that unlike charges attract.
