THE Seventh International Petroleum Exposition and Congress to be held in Tulsa, Okla., Oct. 4 to 11, inclusive, in true western spirit promises to be bigger and better than ever. The Exposition has become an established institution. It gives opportunity to petroleum engineers, technologists, and operators to see each year at one place what the tool makers and machinery manufacturers have to offer which is new or better. It has truly become a place "where men, methods and machinery meet." It is also a convenient focus for technical meetings of various kinds devoted to petroleum and natural gas problems. 'The Petroleum Division of the A. I. M. E. has for several years held its chief fall meeting at Tulsa just preceding the opening of the Es- position. This year our meeting will be on Oct. 2 and 3 and it will be held as usual at Hotel Mayo. The Mid- Continent Oil and Gas Association will, as usual, hold a meeting during the Exposition and this year the Petroleum Division of the A. S. M. E. will hold a three- day session, Oct. 6-8, in the auditorium on the Esposition grounds. In all, six technical sessions are planned by this Society, and aside from reports of committees some 20 technical papers are to be presented. Members of the Institute should attend its own meeting and stay over for as many days as possible for the other meeting at which they will hear and see much of helpful interest.

A general discussion on the subject of Crushing and Grinding was held on August 24, 1927, during the meeting of the Institute at Salt, Lake City. G. H. Clevenger, Chairman of the Milling Methods Committee of the Institute, made the following introductory remarks "Several years ago, a number of us felt that the time was ripe for a fundamental investigation of crushing and grinding. At the outset, it appeared that the first thing we needed was a yardstick whereby grinding efficiency could be measured. "The U. S. Bureau of Mines has been most generous in cooperating with the Milling Methods Committee in getting this work well undrr way. John Gross, who served the committee for a year as secretary, was placed in charge of the investigation and has been ably assisted by S. R. Zimmerley. "Messrs. Gross and Zimmerley will now present the Progrcss Report covering their work to date." Progress Report J. Gross, Salt Lake City, Utah.—-This has not been a simple problem, and when I tell you that me can give you a verbal report of what we have done during three years in five or ten minutes you will realize that we have necessarily done a great deal of work that dors riot appear in the final results. We have been in a virtually new field. Therefore, we have had to feel our way at each step so as to be fairly sure we were correet. The first thing that was realized in this problem ass that unless we had some method of measuring what happened when we crushed an ore, we might as well quit and not go further. we realized that if we tried to measure the results of crushing or grinding by the ordiuary sizing test we would not get anywhere. We could sieve down to say 200 mesh fairly accurately; we could even go one sieve size further with a little less accuracy, and then we were absolutely lost, unless we went into microscopic measurement. Even this latter method would not have been satisfactory. The question was: what were we going to measure? If we were going to measure size, we might measure one particular dimension of a particle and be off 200 per cent. or more. If we tried to measure surfaee, we would have something tangible; the surface of a particle, no matter how irregular, is something definite, far more definite than any linear dimension would be. Moreover, if we could measure surface, we would immediately have a method of checking the Rittinger law as to whether it was or was not correct. So the first thing that we sought. was a method whereby we could measure surface on crushed particles or, we will sag., on particles; it would not make any difference whether crushed or not. STUDY of the adaptability of Tintic Standard ores to concentration dates back to somewhat before January, 1921, when the chloridizing mill at Harold, Utah, was put into operation. The operation of this mill has been fully covered in the TRANSACTIONS (Vol. 73). The process consisted essentially of a chloridizing roast followed by a percolating leach with a nearly saturated solution of common salt, acidified with sulfuric acid; precipitation of silver on sponge copper, and of copper and lead on tin-plate cuttings. Single isothermal sections were constructed for the titonium-rich corners of the systems Ti-Fe-O, Ti-Cr-O, and Ti-Ni-0 with a view to locating the shape and disposition of the ternary intermediate-phase fields for the compounds isomorphous with Fe3W3C. IN a previous note,' it was reported that a group of ternary intermediate phases existed which occurred in the general composition range Ti,X,O-Ti&O where X was one of the following elements: copper, nickel, cobalt, iron, or manganese. In two instances, binary intermediate phases occurred (Ti²Cu and Ti²Ni) which appeared to be isomorphous. The X-ray diffraction patterns of the phases could be indexed on a cubic lattice whose cell edge was of the order of 11 kX. Karlsson2 stated that the line extinctions and line intensities indicated that these phases were isomorphous with Fe³W³C and therefore belonged to the space group Oh. This author also noted that no unique phase of this type occurred at the composition Ti,Cr,O. This latter statement was accepted as true at the time the previous technical note was written.' However, work continued along these lines and that reported here has shown that a phase isomorphous with Fe³W³C does exist in the vicinity of the composition Ti³Cr³O but not at or near Ti4 Cr²O. The lattice parameter of this phase was found to be 13.01 kX. Metallographic examination of both as-cast and annealed specimens of these supposed ternary oxide phases disclosed structures which were far from single phase in many instances. It was considered a point of some interest to locate more positively the composition coordinates of the single-phase fields. To this end, single isothermal sections for the systems Ti-Fe-O (1000°C), Ti-Cr-0 (1000°C), and Ti-Ni-0 (900"C) were constructed. Phase relationships were studied by both X-ray diffraction and metallotrra~hic methods. Allovs were prepared as 10 g buttons by melting in a noncon-sumable electrode, water-cooled copper crucible arc-melting furnace using a helium atmosphere. Oxygen was introduced quantitatively by the use of weighed amounts of TiO² or TiO. Iodide titanium and the purest available alloying metals were used. All results are discussed in terms of the nominal composition of the melts. Previous experience with making oxygen-rich alloys had shown that oxygen losses were not significant if a homogeneous melt was produced. Weight-loss measurements were used to check loss in metallics during melting. Anneals were conducted in evacuated Vycor bulbs, and annealing times ranged from 24 hr at 1000 °C to 48 hr at 900°C. To achieve equilibrium in certain sluggish alloys, seven-day anneals were used. Debye-Scherrer powder patterns were taken in a 14 cm diam camera using filtered CuK radiation (K² = 1.541232 kX; K., = 1.53739 kX). Specimens were prepared by crushing and screening previously annealed buttons. In general, the X-ray diffraction results were used to identify the major phases, while the metallographic examinations were more useful in indicating the number of phases present. By the use of the combined results and general fundamental rules governing ternary equilibrium, it was possible to construct isothermal sections in good detail. In some instances where auxiliary lattice-parameter data were available, it was possible to lay down tie lines and to locate more positively corners of three-phase fields. Isothermal Section of the System Ti-Fe-O at 1000°C The binary systems Ti-O³ and Ti-Fe4 have been published. Binary phases, TiO, TiFe, and TiFe2, are likely to be encountered in the titanium-rich corner of the system. The structures are NaCl (Bl), CsCl (B2), and MgZn, (C14) types, respectively. Although preliminary X-ray diffraction studies indicated the presence of a ternary phase in the composition range Ti,Fe,O-TiJ?e,O, metallographic examination of two specimens at these compositions revealed the presence of other phases. UNTIL VERY RECENTLY the flotation process has not found much application in the treatment of gold ores. No appreciable improvement has been made lately in the technology of this application; but the possibilities of flotation have been more fully appreciated. Excellent results were obtained long ago, but few operators paid much attention to them. For instance, in 1915 extensive experiments were carried out by Mr. Beauchamp and Minerals Separation on ores from the Dutch-Sweeney mine near Jimtown, Calif. The ore contained gold-bearing pyrite and laboratory tests indicated a 10c. tailing on a $6 head. In 1918 a 300-ton flotation mill using Minerals Separation machines was built based on the results obtained. However, when the mill began full-scale operation, mill heads did not come up to expectation, being only $4; also the-tonnage was considerably less than had been expected. Flotation mill tailing assayed 15c., indicating a recovery of over 96 per cent, so that excellent metallurgical results were obtained. The operation was a success but the patient died.

Disregarding for the present the economic side of a new device, let us turn to that feature of the conical pebble-mill which is of interest from a scientific point of view, and consider the device as a puzzle in which the theories of the cylindrical type of mill have been increased. Many articles have been written on the theory of the tube-mill, and explanations have been made which do not explain ; but these have evolved suggestions of practice which have resulted in changes in the tube as to length, diameter, feed, discharge, speed of rotation, rotation on hollow trunnions, rotation on rings, and changes in the operation as to quantity and size of pebbles, charge of load above or below the axis, crushing by causing the larger pieces of the material of the charge to act as grinders, whether crushing is abrasive or impactive, etc. The practical worker in crushing. is first interested in the endeavor to reach an econonlic means of accomplishing a desired end; but the improvements in crushing-practice have been largely left to the manufacturer of machinery, who, as a rule, has little, if any, knowledge of the specific requirements— such as granulation, sizing for concentration without pulverizing the metals, instead of pulverizing the rock or gangue; the metals being the more friable, while the rock is tough and not so easily disintegrated. Although 1931 witnessed no new discoveries of oil or gas in Oklahoma, the year is especially outstanding because of price demoralization, political intervention, abandonment of marginal properties, a strict curbing of oil flow from wells in flush fields and an extension of proration into settled fields. In spite of a strict, adherence to proration agreements, the price per barrel of oil sank from 65c to $1.07 to a low level of 10c to 22c. Table 1 gives the price range for crude oil in Oklahoma during the year. Under a martial law order by the governor, a period intervened from Aug. 4 to Oct. 10, of complete shutting in of the flush fields. This condition created an abrupt decline in the production curve during the two months' period. Oklahoma, as elsewhere, is passing through a "transition period" of relieving expensive above-ground storage by maintaining the more copious supplies of crude oil in the natural reservoirs. For many years the thousands of small, nearly depleted wells have been considered as being the "backbone of the industry." A large number of wells of this type are now idle or completely abandoned. More than 1100 abandonments were recorded by the state Corporation Commission during the year. The industry is becoming less interested in these small wells, replacing the former attitude by the curbed potentialities of flush pools. (New York Meeting, February, 1913.) THE Elk City mining district of Idaho occupies a position near the geographical center of Idaho county, a region of mod¬erate elevation in the western foot-hills of the Bitter Root mountains. The district comprises an area of approximately 350 sq. miles, bounded oil the west by the Newsome district and on the south by the Dixie and Oro Grande districts. There are no mining districts to the north or east. Elk City, the principal town and the seat of the mining office for the district, is situated in a hydrographical basin surrounded by low hills. The elevation is 4,200 ft. above sear level. Through this basin flow Elk Creek, Red river, and American river, which unite west of town to form the south fork of the Clearwater. The one township is set out from the Bitter Root Forest Reserve. Though a railroad starting from the Stites terminus of the Clearwater Short Line of the Northern Pacific railroad has been under consideration for some years, the camp is yet with¬out railroad facilities. The projected road would follow the south fork of the Clearwater on easy grades, but would be very expensive to build and maintain. While such a road would greatly benefit those who are now operating in the camp, and in a slight degree stimulate interest in its possibilities, there is hardly business enough to warrant its construction.

IN times of stress nations pick strong men to lead them. Similarly the Coal Division selected forceful Larry A. Shipman, fuel engineer for the Southern Coal and Coke Co., Knoxville, Tenn.. to lead it through the year 1945. He was born in Indianapolis May 13, 1891. Following graduation from a technical high school in that city Larry began his fuel career approximately 35 years ago attached to one end of a scoop shovel, firing locomotives for the Pennsylvania Railroad. At the end of two years he transferred to the New York Central Lines and held these jobs successively: locomotive fireman, engineer, fireman instructor, supervisor of instructors, and fuel engineer.

Mining by hydraulic process of the important gold-bearing gravels of the Sacramento Valley in the basins of the Yuba, Bear and American rivers began in 1853, and continued at an ever-increasing rate for 30 years. In its most active days it reached an annual production of $15,000,000, and averaged $10,000,000 per year over the 30 years. During that period no provisions were made to prevent the debris from being discharged into the water courses, and ultimately large quantities of silt, sand and gravel were washed down to the lower valleys; filling channels, causing overflow of agricultural lands and difficulty in maintaining navigable depths in the Sacramento River. Agitation and suits filed because of these damages finally resulted in the injunction decision of Judge L. B. Sawyer,' in the U.S. Circuit Court, Jan. 23, 1884, which closed down practically all hydraulic mining operations not having means to restrain their debris. In 1893 (approved March 1, 1893), Congress passed the act introduced by Representative Anthony Caminetti, of California, creating the California Debris Commission, composed of three officers assigned from the Engineer Corps of the U.S. Army, and since that time it has been legal and possible within the drainage systems of Sacramento and San Joaquin rivers to conduct hydraulic mining of gold-bearing gravels behind dams built under this commission's permit and supervision. In the watersheds of the Trinity and Klamath rivers, which flow directly to the Pacific Ocean and do not affect navigation or agriculture, operating permits from the California Debris Commission are not required. There is a measure of restriction there, however, through what is known as the Trinity and Klamath River Fish and Game District. Chap. 215, Stat. 1931, in order to secure relatively clear water for the fishing season, provides that between July 15 and October 15 each year there must not be discharged into these rivers debris that will cause a turbidity greater than a content of 50 parts per million in the

The use of froth flotation for the separation of minerals has become one of the most important of ore dressing processes. Its particular adaptability to the enrichment of low grade ores has made the process an important factor in the national economy. The methods have been extended to the recovery of a great number of minerals. Among the few minerals which have resisted efforts toward industrial flotation is chrysocolla, a hydrated partly colloidal copper silicate. Chrysocolla, being a product of natural oxidation, has been found to occur in small quantities with many ores which are recovered by flotation methods. In present practice, these small quantities of copper silicate pass off with the tailings and are lost. The advantages to be gained by a satisfactory process for the recovery of chrysocolla is apparent. Any application of principles which points a way toward the satisfactory industrial flotation process for copper silicate would be of advantage. This paper presents an attack on this problem. Two methods for the recovery of chrysocolla have been developed by the United States Bureau of Mines.1,2 They have been successful on a laboratory scale but have been seriously restricted in industrial application by critical requirements in the procedure. In one of the Bureau of Mines methods,' the ore is activated with sodium or hydrogen sulphide in an aqueous solution at a pH of 4. Amy1 xanthate is then used as a collector with pine oil as a frother in the flotation process. An excess of sulphide acts as a depressant and the state of optimum conditions is difficult to control industrially. In the second Bureau of Mines method,2 soap is used as the collector at a pH of between 8 and 9. The diffi- culties with this process are that soap is not a specific collector, that heavy metal or alkaline earth ions cause the formation of insoluble soaps, and that a more acid solution causes the formation of a free acid which does not act as a collector for chrysocolla. The problem of recovering chrysocolla by flotation involves the selection of a suitable collector. The collector molecule must be composed of an active polar group that has an attraction for chrysocolla, and of a hydrocarbon chain. Certain dyes have been shown to have an attraction for certain minerals. Suida3 found that hydrated silicates are colored by basic dyes. Dittler4 showed that chrysocolla, among other colloidal minerals of acid reaction, preferentially takes up such basic dyes as fuchsin B, methylene blue, and methyl green. Endell5 gave information to show that the colloidal material in clay may be determined by its selective adsorption of fuchsin. A simple experiment, likewise, illustrates the difference in the adsorptive power of chrysocolla and of silica for the basic triphenyl methane dyes. When a mixture of chrysocolla and silica is immersed in a very dilute dye solution, less than 5 ppm, the chryso-colla is rapidly dyed and the silica is dyed more slowly. The difference is substantial but one of degree. Dean2 showed that the dyes, crystal violet and toluidine blue, are taken up by quartz in an adsorption type process. The difference in the adsorptive power, however, offers the means by which a new collector may act. To form such a collector, a hydrocarbon chain must be attached to the dye molecule. This involves a process of organic synthesis. Butyl, hexyl, and octyl hydrocarbon chains were selected for substitution in the malachite green molecule. For the purpose of identification, the alkyl-substituted dyes formed are called: butyl-malachite green; hexyl- malachite green; and octyl-malachite green. An outline of the procedure for their synthesis is given in the appendix. It is generally recognized in the preparation of this type of dye that the chemical structure of some of the dye molecules varies. However, a uniform formula is attributed to the dye. Such a procedure has been followed in specifying the structure of these alkyl-substi-tuted malachite green dyes. The structure is given on the basis of their properties as an homologous series of dyes, on their method of preparation, and on the purity of intermediates used. CALIFORNIA'S iron and steel industry had its beginning in San Francisco in 1849 when the first iron casting was poured at the old Union Iron Works. Soon after, in 1856 at Grass Valley, enough iron ore was smelted to supply pig iron for the castings of a quartz mill there. From 1880 to 1886, iron ore was produced from the Hotaling mine in Placer County and converted to pig iron in a local blast furnace using charcoal. From 1907 to 1914, the Noble Electric Steel Co. produced pig iron from iron ore mined at the Shasta Iron Co. mine, and followed this for three years in the production of ferro-alloys. Between 1917 and 1941, the State's industry in- creased its capacity for open hearth and electric furnace scrap treatment, but the real impetus was supplied by the need for more steel at the beginning of World War II. The result was the State's first integrated steel plant-the Kaiser Steel Corp. facilities at Fontana.

IN April of this year the California State Division of Mines (formerly known as the State Mining Bureau) observed its 50th anniversary. The Division serves as a bureau of information and, an encyclopaedia of California's economic minerals. Its primary function is to make economic surveys of the mineral resources of California, their development and utilization. Geological studies also constitute a related part of the work as being necessary in tracing and out- lining ore deposits and the most likely areas in which to find them. The results of the Bureau's data-gathering are published in the form of annual reports of the State Mineralogist, and in bulletins on specific substances. The Division is just completing a series of reports on the mineral resources of the State arranged by counties.. It is now starting .a new series of reports arranged according to substances particularly the so-called non- metallic commercial groups. Of these the following are now available: clays, barite, and mineral paint. These will be followed by reports on feldspar and silica, diatomaceous earth, limestone and others

ASIDE from the annual dinner-dance, the two outstanding social events of the Annual Meeting were the dinner- smoker on Monday night and the informal dance on Tuesday night, both of which were held at the Commodore Hotel. Approximately 400 attended the former event, compared with 570 a year ago, and about 250, people were attracted to the dance.

The shear continuity conditions under which one mechanical twin may cross another are considered. Twin intersections usually involve various types of slip deformation in addition to twinning. Because the shear of the crossing twin may be partly transmitted through the crossed twin by slip mechanisms, continuity of the twinning shear vectors is not required at a twin intersection. It is concluded that analyses based on twin intersections should not he used as an independent method for deducing twinning elements in newly observed twinning modes. WHEN one mechanical twin passes through another, a twin intersection is said to occur. In the simplest form of intersection, Fig. 1, the crossing of one twin by another is accomplished with the aid of a second-order twin induced, in the twin that is crossed, by the crossing twin. The subject of twin intersections is significant to the field of deformation studies because it has been postulated by cahn1 that twin intersections should occur only under the following continuity conditions: 1) the traces of the primary and second-order twin must be parallel to each other in the plane of the crossed twin; 2) the direction 771 and magnitude, S, of the twinning shear must be identical in the crossing and second-order twins; also, the sense of shear must be the same. If these postulates are valid they constitute a valuable tool for determining twinning elements of newly observed twinning modes in metals. In his classic paper in 1953 on the plastic deformation of a uranium, Cahn1 used these continuity conditions to deduce twinning elements for several uranium modes. However, in the same year, pratt2 showed that both of Cahn's continuity equations were violated for (1012) twin intersections in zinc. Later, Kiho and Maruyama3, 4 showed that Cahn's second postulate was violated in {301) and (101) twinning in tin and (101) twinning in bismuth. In spite of this documentation that Cahn's second postulate is often violated, several recent papers5'6 have been published which have attempted to use the condition of continuity of twinning shear vectors for the evaluation of twinning elements. The primary purpose of this paper is to call attention to the possible ambiguity inherent in applications of Cahn's postulate, and to present additional information concerning the nature of twin intersections.

FOR the past three years, the senior writer has carried out, with inter-ruptions, a series of investigations into the characteristics of prospecting seismographs of a wide variety of construction. Early in 1932, a com-plete equipment was developed for both refraction and reflection observa-tions; its first function being, however, the application in reflection shooting. The performance of the equipment proved to be highly satis-factory in a series of field tests' which were carried out by the junior writer, whose services were loaned to the Colorado School of Mines by courtesy of the Plains Exploration Co. in Denver. The various problems that were encountered in the construction of the equipment, in its application in the field, and in the interpretation of the results, are fully treated in Publication 47 of the Department of Geophysics of the Colorado School of Mines. Its first part deals with the various problems encountered in the design of the instruments, and presents a discussion of such topics as the free and forced oscillations of damped and undamped mechanical seismographs, the action of oscil-lographic recording instruments and amplifiers, the characteristics of electromagnetic seismographs, and the requirements of damping, natural frequencies and static magnification for the pickups, amplifiers and oscillographs used in refraction and reflection seismographs. Further-more, a detailed discussion of the various methods of static and dynamic tests of seismic receivers, and a description of the reflection equipment developed at the School of Mines is presented. Unfortunately, a delay has occurred in the publication of the first part of this investigation concerning the instrument problems. There-fore, the second part, dealing with the field problems, is herewith pre-sented first.

The nature and comparative features of anthracite and bituminous coals have been discussed by the writer in two previous papers.' Although this paper is offered as a further contribution to the subject, it seems desirable at the outset to repeat some of the descriptive matter of the early works in order to show the actual connection between various constituents of both coals and the new photomicrographs and other physical and chemical properties. Structure of Anthracite and Bituminous Coals A lump of bituminous coal (Fig. 1) is readily seen to be composed of layers differing from one another in texture, luster and thickness. There are, in general, three kinds of layers, although only two are usually seen. One is deep black, very compact, and has a bright luster; another is grayish black, has a duller luster and is less compact; the third is black, dull and porous in appearance, but because of its thinness is not often seen except on parting surfaces. This last material is charcoal. American students of coal morphology use the names anthraxylon, attritus, and fusain to designate these three constituents of laminated coal. Anthraxylon refers to the brightest bands, attritus to the duller layers, and fusain to the charcoal. Close examination of a lump of bituminous coal shows the brightest deep black layers to be embedded in the duller grayish black laminae. These deep black layers are lens-shaped and vary in thickness from thin sheets to over half an inch. They are often so continuous through the lump that their tapering terminae are not noticeable. On careful examination the duller grayish black laminae (Fig. 7) are seen to contain many very thin sheets of this very bright black material. The charcoal

With flow of non-Newtonian fluids in porous media, effective viscosities are needed for use in the Darcy equation. These viscosities depend on the rock parameters and flowing conditions. In this investigation, rheological and flow results were correlated to develop an expression for calculating effective viscosities. Surfactant-stabilized dispersions of water in hydrocarbon were used with consolidated sandstone cores of different permeabilities. The average shear rate in a core was related to the permeability and porosity of the core and the frontal velocity through the core. By using the correlation obtained for determining effective viscosity, experimental and theoretical values were compared for each fluid system by determining average and maximum errors. For the fluid system showing the largest average error, the correlation fit 38 experimental points with an average and maximum percentage error of 4.3 and 14.8, respectively. For the fluid system showing the least error, average and maximum percentage errors of 1.8 and 4.3, respectively, were calculated using 29 experimental points. INTRODUCTION Use of non-Newtonian fluids in the petroleum industry is not new. Fluids of this type have been used for many years as fracturing agents and drilling muds. Recently, attention has focused on the use of high molecular weight polymer solutions for secondary recovery. Results have been reported on studies relating to the flow behavior of polymer solutions in porous media.1-4 Each study gives the viscosity in the Darcy equation as a function of the rheological properties of the fluid, the characteristics of the porous medium and the pressure gradient. The functional forms of the reported expressions differ somewhat in each study. The first three studies used unconsolidated porous media while the fourth used a single consolidated core. Because of the limited information available on the flow of non-Newtonian fluids in porous media, further investigation was undertaken in this area. We selected non-Newtonian fluids that did not contain high molecular weight polymers in order to minimize core plugging. The over-all objective was to gain a better understanding of the flow behavior of non-Newtonian fluids in consolidated porous media. Specifically, our goal was to determine the relationship between the average shear rate in a core and the frontal velocity. Because of this goal, it was necessary to determine the effect of permeability on the shear rate-frontal velocity relationship. We wanted to replace the viscosity in the Darcy equation with an expression relating to the average shear rate in the core and the rheological properties of the non-Newtonian fluid. THEORY For a time-independent, non-Newtonian fluid, the apparent viscosity is a function of the shear rate. This relationship is given by µ = F(v')...........(1) With Eq. 1, a single value of shear rate determines the apparent viscosity at that shear rate. With flow in porous media, a spectrum of shear rates occurs at any average throughput. An average shear rate v' can be used to represent the spectrum of shear rates that exists within the core. By using v' and the rheological data given by Eq. 1, an effective viscosity is determined for the flowing fluid. If v' is the correct average, µe becomes the appropriate viscosity for use in the Darcy equation. Under these conditions, flow rate-pressure drop relationships can be determined for non-Newtonian fluids. HOW the correct average shear rate might be related to the frontal velocity through the core and the characteristics of the porous media will now be considered. Investigations were conducted by the lndiana Geological Survey for some dry methods of bene-ficiating low-grade gypsum ore. Seventy-two batch and continuous flow tests were performed with a roller mill, rod mill, pebble mill, electronic color sorter, electrostatic separator, and an air separator. Approximately 650 size analyses and 550 chemical analyses were performed during the investigation. Batch samples were tested by the Survey, and most of the continuous flow tests were handled by com-mercial laboratories. INTRODUCTION Although many companies producing gypsum have been interested in dry beneficiation, very little information has been published in the past. One of the most comprehensive investigations was reported by the Canadian Department of Mines.5 Other reports of interest have been published by the Canadian Department of Mines,' the South Australian Department of Mines,2 and the U.S. Bureau of Mines.3 Some beneficiating practices, such as hand picking, selective mining, crushing and screening, milling, and air classifying, were already in use in the Canadian industry prior to MacPherson's investigations.5 MacPherson examined the effect of tabling, air separation, screening, flotation, electrostatic separation, calcining, washing, and various types of milling, in his efforts to eliminate dolomite, limestone, and small amounts of silica and clay from the gypsum ore. RAW MATERIAL Gypsum and anhydrite occur within the lower part of the St. Louis Limestone (Mississippian) in southwestern Indiana. Gypsum in single beds 10 or more ft thick occur at Shoals, Martin County; near Freedom, Owen County; near Bloomfield, Greene County; and in the Devonian strata of LaPorte County. Only the Shoals deposit has been exploited commercially. The western edge of the Shoals deposit is contaminated by a continuous bed of shale, about 1 1/2 to 2 ft thick, near the top of the evaporite and by thin continuous strata or irregular masses of carbonate rock. The low-grade material used in these investigations was obtained from the waste pile of the National Gypsum Co.'s plant at Shoals. The waste ore averaged about 67.4% gypsum and was contaminated by various amounts of shale, dolomite, and limestone. All the material had been previously crushed and screened to minus 1 1/4 to plus 3/8 in. X-ray analyses of powdered, sedimentated, gly-colated, and heat-treated samples of the shale showed that it was composed of slightly structurally disordered illite, Fe-rich chlorite, and very finegrained disseminated silt. The clays and silt were partly cemented with carbonate material. Light-gray argillaceous limestone and gray or brown porous dolomite made up most of the carbonate rock contamination. Crushing Characteristics: The rate unweathered gypsum, carbonate rock, and shale reduce in size was determined by crushing handpicked samples in a rod mill and screening at minus 100 mesh (.0059 in.). Fig. 1 graphically represents the data. These data indicate that carbonate rock should be relatively easy to separate from gypsum, but that shale should be difficult to separate from gypsum by differential crushing. Controlled Samples: Eight rod mill tests of hand-picked samples of mixed gypsum and shale and mixed gypsum and carbonate rock were made. Sample weight and crushing weight were standardized, but the scalping screen size was varied from 3 to 10 mesh (.265 to .0787 in.) in order to obtain the optimum purity and recovery. The data obtained from the tests (see Table I) illustrate that the relatively hard carbonate rock allows appreciable beneficiation (13.6 to 18%), but the low strength gypsum and shale allows only minimal separation (3.1 to 7.5%).* Semi control led Samples: During the investigation considerable slaking of the shale was noted when the ore was subjected to alternate wetting and drying. As demonstrated in laboratory tests, as much as 76% shale can be removed by two cycles of wetting and drying in a 48-hour period with subsequent screening at .265 in. Five ore samples, stockpiled and weathered, were screened, rod-mill crushed and rescreened at .157 or .187 in. with excellent results (Table 11).
