PIG iron was first produced in Alabama in 1818 from limonite or brown ore and since then much of this ore has come from the so-called mineral district of northern Alabama, especially along the Cretaceous-Paleozoic contact. For many years the Russellville district in Franklin County, where the first blast furnace was erected, produced more than 100,000 tons of brown ore annually. Limonite has been reported at many places in the Coastal Plain region, where the formations are of Mesozoic and Cenozoic age, but these scattered deposits were never considered to be of much commercial importance. However, in the last three years a considerable quantity of this ore has been scraped up and shipped, particularly from the city of Greenville in Butler County.

ALL crude oils become more viscous when chilled, but the only oils that congeal and precipitate paraffin to such an extent as actually to cause production troubles are those that contain an appreciable amount of wax. In handling these oils of high wax content, three distinct problems may be encountered before the oil reaches the refinery. The first problem is the precipitation and accumulation of paraffin in the well, either in the oil string or on the face and in the pores of the sand. The second problem is the accumulation of paraffin and the congealing of oil in the transportation lines. The third problem is the precipitation of paraffin and the formation of tank bottoms.

Upon the recommendation of its Technical Committee, The Com-pressed Air Society has adopted the following definitions of, certain terms. Displacement.-The displacement of an air compressor is the volume displaced by the net area of the compressor piston. Capacity.-The capacity should be expressed in cubic feet per minute, and is the actual amount of air compressed and delivered, expressed in terms of free air at intake temperature and at the pressure of dry air at the suction. Volumetric Efficiency.-Volumetric efficiency is the ratio of the capacity to the displacement of the compressor, all as defined above. Compression Efficiency.-Compression efficiency is the ratio of the work required to compress isothermally all the air delivered by an air compressor to the work actually clone within the compressor cylinder, as shown by indicator cards, and may he expressed is the product of the volumetric efficiency (the intake pressure and the hyperbolic logarithm of the ratio of compression), all divided by the indicated mean effective pressure within the air cylinder or cylinders.

Galvanic interaction between particulate chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) and copper results in the rapid conversion of chalcopyrite to chalcocite. The effects of temperature, surface area, concentration of sulfuric acid and agitation were systematically evaluated. The kinetics were found to be controlled by a steady-state current flow controlled by the effective anodic and cathodic surface areas involved in the galvanic couple. The experimental activation energy was 11.5 and stoichiometric data and reaction products have been characterized. The overall kinetic system has been evaluated based upon an electrochemical model.

THE Pima pit is a 1700x1400-St oval, the long T axis parallel to the strike of the orebody. The north side of the pit is carried as a final pit slope that coincides with the footwall of the orebody. The south side and east and west ends of the pit are working slopes continually being stripped back toward the final slopes. An inclined roadway extending from the natural ground surface on a 5 pct grade down to the north- east corner provides access to the pit. This road enters the pit 130 ft below the natural surface and continues as a pit ramp on a 5 pct grade to the 3150-ft bench (roughly the base of the alluvial cover). At this point the ramp system is steepened to a 12 pct grade and continues to the pit bottom. The 5 pct grade is maintained in the alluvial section to facilitate scraper haulage out of the pit. In addition to this main access ramp, temporary working ramps in the alluvial areas allow shorter routes to dumps. These are left on top of working benches and do not change the overall working slopes. Below the base of the alluvium, haulage is by truck down to the skip loading point or up from the bottom to the skip loading point.

Though resistance to flow offered by mine airways supported with timber sets has been an object of study over the last half century, no accurate relation has yet been established from which prediction of the resistance coefficient of a projected timbered airway can be made. Zenofontowa et al. developed an empirical relation, but this relation has not been found to satisfactorily correlate experimental data obtained by Sales and Hinsley. This led the author to develop a set of simple theoretical relations between the resistance coefficient of timbered airways and the various parameters affecting it, such as the type and spacing of sets as well as the shape and size of members forming the set. Experiments were designed with the help of a laboratory model airway to verify the validity of the relations developed. With the experiments conducted so far with 4, 3 and 1-piece sets of 3.4 x 3.4, 2..5 x 2.5, and 4.5 X 4.5-cm square-section timbers in a 45.8 x 38-cm model airway, the theoretical relations have been shown to hold.

NONFERROUS alloys upon which desirable properties can be conferred by heat treatment are becoming of increasing industrial importance. The alloys of copper with a constituent which has a solubility varying with temperature are materials of this character. Some of the constituents which are effective in producing a change in the mechanical properties of these alloys upon heat treatment are, according to Corson,1 nickel and silicon, iron and silicon, cobalt and silicon, and chromium and silicon. In addition to these elements, Gregg2 states that the combination of beryllium and silicon is effective in producing age-hardening characteristics in copper. The effect of these elements, however, as dispersion-hardening constituents in the copper alpha solid solutions does not seem to have been studied in any considerable detail. This paper deals with the heat treatment and properties of three alpha brasses containing 3 per cent. of nickel plus silicon in the proportion necessary to form the compound nickel silicide, Ni2Si. Some information of a preliminary nature in regard to the hardening by heat treatment of phosphor bronze containing the same percentages of nickel and silicon is included. The method of hardening the alloys, which is effective in increasing the tensile strength and proportional limit, is similar to that used in, the case of duralumin type aluminum alloys. It consists of a quench from a temperature at which the hardening constituent is in solid solution, followed by an aging at a lower temperature to precipitate the dissolved constituent in a dispersed condition. This results in an increased resistance of the alloy to deformation with an attendant improvement in the tensile properties.

THE slag performs two useful functions. in open-hearth steel-making. First, it is the means of disposal of all the impurities, save carbon, which are removed from the charge materials in refining the steel, so it must be suited to receiving and retaining as much as possible of undesirable elements with minimum loss of iron and useful alloying elements. Second, the slag serves as a buffer between the flame and the bath and transfers oxygen to the metal at a measured pace contrasted with the violent and difficultly controlled oxidation of the bessemer process. At the same time, the slag is a thermal insulator that limits the rate at which heat can be delivered to the metal from the flame, and a heavy slag blanket thereby serves as a brake on production rates. It has been said with justification that the secret of good steel- making is to make a good slag and the steel will take care of itself. In a broad sense, the subject of slag control includes not only the adjustment of the composition of the slag but also of its relative weight in terms of percentage of the metal-bath weight. The slag is made up essentially of: (1) oxides formed by oxidation of silicon, manganese, phosphorus, and iron in the charge, (2) SO2, MnO, MgO, and other oxides charged as such or introduced incidentally with ores or fluxes or by refractory erosion, and (3) lime charged or fed to the heat to neutralize the "acidic" oxides present (SiO2 and P2O5). Obviously, if practically perfect control were possible over the composition of the charge as well as over the oxidation process during the melting period, both slag weight and composition would be very nearly predetermined, and the control problem would be solved. Unfortunately, only a somewhat imperfect control over these factors is possible, so the operator must begin during the lime boil and continue through the refining period to discover and correct departures from the normal pattern of slag development. Some measurements of the rate of loss of hydrogen from cylinders of iron and steel are analyzed in terrns of a trapping theory. The apeement is encozcraging and gives rise to estimates for the density of traps in the metal. Furthermore, the results appear to be consistent with the assumption that the diffusion constant D for the steady flux of hydrogen through iron lies on the extrapolation of the linear curve (log D us 1/T) obtained at higher temperatures. IT has been shown in a previous paper1 that the literature relating to hydrogen diffusion in steels contains sufficient evidence to invalidate the application of Fick's laws to hydrogen diffusion in steel at low temperatures. To account for the deviations from simple diffusion behavior a trapping theory was developed, and the fundamental laws modified accordingly. In the present paper, new data on the evolution of hydrogen from long cylinders are presented, and together with some published data are examined in terms of the requirements of the theory.' Properties of solutions of the basic equations derived previously1 and appropriate to the present experimental conditions are outlined in the first section as they determine the form in which the experimental data must be presented for a comparison of theory and experiment. Two new solutions not previously reported have been derived as described in the Appendix. The experiments and treatment of data are then given in Sections 2 and 3 and the results are discussed in Section 4. 1) THEORETICAL CONSIDERATIONS The hydrogen-diffusion theory1 applied in this paper postulated that lattice-dissolved hydrogen at a concentration C diffuses randomly in accordance with Fick's first law, but that the lattice contains a uniform density N of traps which can capture and delay hydrogen atoms. kC atoms are trapped per second in a region containing unit concentration of vacant traps while p are released per second in a region containing unit concentration of occupied traps. On this basis it was shown (Eq. [30] of Ref. 1) that, when local changes in the lattice-dissolved concentration C are slow enough for equilibrium to be established with the traps, the system is represented in dimensionless form by the equation:

Leaching of copper ores is a comparatively old art, probably dating back to medieval times. The leaching of mixed oxidized-sulfide ores, however, is modern. The first modern plant leaching mixed ores was at Ajo, Ariz., where commercial operations commenced in 1917. While the ore at Ajo was primarily oxidized there was always some sulfide present. The Inspiration leaching plant, which was put in operation in 1926, may be considered the first plant constructed for the extraction of both sulfide and oxidized copper. The pioneers in leaching mixed ores had a difficult task before them since they had very little fundamental data on the chemical and physical factors of leaching. For the very large amount of painstaking experimental work that was done before building the Ajo and Inspiration leaching plants the reader is referred to the original articles.' For a period of several years the writer worked on problems connected with the chemistry and physics of leaching mixed oxidized-sulfide ores. This paper summarizes the experimental work and discusses various factors involved in leaching ores. It also presents many data heretofore unpublished. Among the new data are those on chrysocolla, pages 518 to 519, inclusive; dioptase, page 519; covellite, page 529; virtually all those on chalcopyrite, pages 531 to 533, inclusive; enargite, page 533; and tetrahedrite and tennantite, pages 534 and 533. The oxidized copper minerals of commercial importance in American ores are azurite, Cu3(OH)2(CO3)2; malachite, Cu2(OH)2CO3; chrysocolla, CuSi03.2H2O; tenorite (or melaconite), CuO; and cuprite, Cu2O. Dioptase, CuSiO3.H2O is less common. Brochantite, CuSO4.3Cu(OH)2, while the chief mineral in the ore at Chuquicamata, is not of major importance in the United States. Metallic copper, while chemically not so, is frequently classed as an oxidized mineral of copper. The most important sulfide minerals are chalcocite, Cu2s; covellite, CuS; bornite, Cu5FeS4; and chalcopyrite, CuFeS2. Less important complex sulfides are enargite,

The Cripple Creek district occupies a cluster of foot-hills on the south side of Pike's Peak and is a portion of an extensive, though uneven, plateau which unites the eastern range of the Rocky mountains with the Sangre de Cristo. It is essentially a small volcanic area, of about 20 square miles, amid the granite of the Front range. But though, when regarded as a rich mining district, it may be considered as an isolated area,* yet, geologically, it is, as Whitman Cross has pointed out, only an outlying portion of a much larger volcanic region, which stretches to the south and west, around Silver Cliff and the Rosita hills, forming the picturesque country cut by the deep cañons of the Arkansas river and its tributaries. The mines are situated amid a volcanic complex, consisting of tuffs and breccias which have been penetrated by an extensive system of dikes and other intrusive masses. The prevailing formation is an andesite breccia, which lies upon the worn surface of the granite and fills the deep basin around a volcanic vent. The breccia, since its deposition, has been broken into by several eruptions of phonolite and, later still, by a series of thin dikes of basalt and other allied rocks of a highly basic composition. The successive sedimentary formatione which, elsewhere in Colorado, lie upon the basal granite, are not represented in the district; whatever sediments were laid down before the volcanic period must have been removed by erosion, and there is very little evidence which affords a datum-line whereby the geological age of the volcanic eruptions can be determined. The activity of aluminum in liquid Al-Fe alloys .has been measured by an improved version of the transportation method in which the metallic vapor has been collected by its solution in a metallic condenser. The results can be represented by the equation: log yAl = -3.0(1 - xAl2) (0.6 < XAl < 1.0) This equation applies at 1315°C. MORRIS and zellarsl adapted the transportation method for measuring the vapor pressure of a com- ponent of an alloy at high temperature. We have modified their technique further2 for use with metals that are strong oxide formers. In the present case the method has been applied to the Al- Fe system to obtain the activity of aluminum in the liquid region at 1315°C. Dried ultrahigh-purity hydrogen (Matheson) is the carrier gas. The operations, Fig. 1, of deoxidizing the gas, equilibrating the gas with the sample at 1315";, and then collecting the aluminum vapor are all accomplished within a single, continuous alumina tube to avoid contamination of the system by leaks. De-oxidation to a very low level of PO2 (<10-25 atm) is Obtained by passing the hydrogen through a tightly packed bed of aluminum powder. THE great work of Gorgas in stamping out yellow fever in Panama during the construction of the Canal was one of the chief factors contributing to the ultimate accomplishment of the task, two previous attempts having failed largely through the demoralization of workers by epidemics of contagious diseases. Mining camps, rapidly constructed during the boom days of the rushes to new fields, have been frequent sufferers from typhoid when, as so often used to be the case, little or no attention was given to bacterial examination of the water supply or to the method used for disposing of the sewage.

A theoretical and experimental study has been made of those interactions between holes and electrons which influence the solubilities of donors and acceptors in semiconductors. The major portion of the work concerns the solubility of lithium in silicon doped to varying degrees with boron. This solubility increases with increasing boron content in a manner predicted by theory and exhibits the expected temperature dependence. A qualitative experiment in germanium is described which demonstrates, in accordance with theory, that doping with a donor decreases the solubility of another donor. SEVERAL authors have discussed the possibility that holes and electrons behave like chemical entities and influence the solubilities of ionized impurities, Wagner was the first to invoke this concept in connection with his studies on nonstoichio-metric oxides. Of primary importance in mine-installations is the hoist, which has a very direct bearing on the successful operation of a mine. Conditions vary greatly with different mines, and especially in different localities. Such factors as depth, incline, the number of levels, permissible or desirable speeds, conditions of ore, etc., are always more or less special in each case. Veins of ore are never exactly duplicated, and the nature of the ground through which shafts are sunk may considerably modify permissible values. As mining-laws are made by the different States, they necessarily vary somewhat, and, even when not fully observed, they introduce factors which qualify the conditions of hoisting men and ore. The amount of timbering required is often of importance as relating to hoisting-conditions. Methods of loading ore affect the time required, as also does the question of the use of cars or skips. Safety-precautions must be very carefully considered, and the number of men in each mine, the number of compartments, and often the method of removing water from the mine, must have careful consideration. While a general discussion of the subject of hoisting is possible, most cases are entirely special, and can be considered only in connection with the peculiar conditions pertaining to that particular installation. The cost of installation of the hoisting-plant may be an appreciable amount, while the cost of raising the ore may be but a small part of the total operating-charge. In many cases, however, the output of the mine is limited by the capacity or the hoist, and the latter thus becomes of the first importance.
