Alkaline alcohol solutions were investigated by the Federal Bureau of Mines for improving the desorption rate of gold and silver from metal-laden activated carbon generated in gold processing circuits. Factors affecting the desorption, such as temperature, alcohol content, type of alcohol, and alkalinity, were studied. Nearly complete metal desorption was obtained in 5 to 6 hr at 80º C using a solution containing about 20 vol-pct alcohol and 1 pct sodium hydroxide. Sodium sulfide was shown to be effective for selectively precipitating silver from the carbon strip solutions, thereby providing a means for producing high- purity gold by subsequent electrolysis.

One of the most important questions that arises in ore estimation can be stated as follows: What is the error when one extends the grade of a sample to a certain volume? The theory of regionalized variables, with the concept of extension variance, provides a response to that crucial question for any kind of sample extended to any volume. For the usual "extensions" encountered in current mining practice, some simple results can be derived from that theory which was initiated by Dr. G. Matheron. These results have been applied to a stratiform lead-zinc deposit for which several estimations of grade, tonnage and related precision have been made for a series of grid sizes such as might be used in a progressive exploration program.

During the last few years, the trend in the aircraft and automotive industries has been toward higher and higher operating engine temperatures. This has created considerable interest in the effect of temperature on the properties of alloys. In the magnesium field, it has been recognized for many years that the addition of cerium imparts high strength and good resistance to creep at elevated temperatures. Beck,' in his treatise on magnesium, has summarized the work of German investigators. This includes the unpublished data of Menking, showing the increase in strength and hardness of extruded alloys containing 2 to 20 per cent Ce at temperatures from 20' to 300°C. (68" to 57z°F.) and the results of Vosskiihler, who demonstrated the improved resistance to creep of alloys containing 6 per cent Ce plus 2 per cent Mn and 0.5 per cent Ce plus 2 per cent Mn at 150°C. (302°F.). Wellinger and Kei12 have also reported the creep properties of a forged magnesium-cerium-man-ganese alloy at 200' and 250°C. (392' and 482°F.). Haughton and Prytherch have determined the tensile properties of various forged magnesium alloys containing cerium, cerium plus manganese, cerium plus calcium, cerium plus nickel, cerium plus nickel plus manganese, and cerium plus cobalt plus manganese at temperatures up to 290°C. (554OF.). Magnesium-cerium alloys have been used in some commercial applications. It is reported that an alloy containing 3 per cent Ce plus 0.5 per cent Mn plus 0.5 per cent Ca is being used on a forged impeller in Great Britain. Two forged parts made from an alloy with a nominal composition of 5 per cent Ce and 2 per cent Mn have been found on the German BMW-8o1D aircraft engine. These two forgings consist of a supercharger impeller and a rear cam-follower guide. In this country, several types of pistons have been made experimentally in both the cast and the forged conditions from an alloy containing 6 per cent Ce plus 2 per cent Mn and in the cast condition from an alloy of magnesium plus 10 per cent Ce. The cast pistons have been tested in various types of internal-combustion engines, with promising results. This paper presents the results of an extensive investigation on the properties of various cerium-containing magnesium alloys in both the cast and the forged conditions. Data are presented to show the beneficial effects of increasing amounts of cerium on the mechanical properties of magnesium at at temperatures' The effects of heat-treatment on the properties of these alloys and the attendant changes in the microstructure are discussed. DURING January, 1933, burlap or coco matting was placed in the bottom of launders handling various products of the flotation plant of the Magna mill of the Utah Copper Co., with the hope of increasing the total recovery of gold. This was soon followed by placing various materials, such as coco matting, cotton twill, and common 10-oz. burlap on the bottom of the main tailing launder. The Pima mine lies 20 miles southwest of Tucson, Ariz., and 45 miles north of the Mexican border. It is located on a hillside overlooking Tucson, which allows for gravity flow generally through the plant. In April 1965, an expansion was authorized by the mine's board of directors. This will triple the mine's output to 18,000 tpd. At this rate, it is estimated that there is sufficient ore to last 20 years.

MUCH has been published on highly technical phases of grinding. Very little has been written on how a mill man can improve his operations by determining the optimum size assortment of grinding balls that should be added as a makeup charge. This ball rationing is not to be confused with the ball ration used as an initial charge when the mill is started up. Ball rationing is considered for one or more of the following purposes: 1) to increase throughput of the mill, 2) to reduce the power required per ton of ore ground to the desired size, 3) to reduce steel consumption per ton of ore ground, 4) to improve product size, and 5) to lower retention time of ore in the mill.

Temperature distribution as well as position of the solidified front is solved by means of "heat balance integral", for the case of freezing a slab with time-dependent surface temperature. Numerical solutions for the cases of linear variation and exponential decay for surface temperature are given. Application also includes solidification of casting. An increased interest in the heat-transfer problem involving a change of phase has been developed in recent years. Practical problems include solidification of a casting, freezing and thawing of soil, ice formation, and others. Despite the importance of the topic, a literature search reveals relatively few solutions which may be extended to practical problems. Due to mathematical complexity, which comes from the nonlinearity of governing differential equations, exact analytical solutions which have been published are limited to a few cases with simple boundary conditions. Although numerical solutions of these problems have become available after highspeed digital computers were introduced, lack of simple and general methods of programming for computation makes this approach impractical. The case of the semi-infinite slab with constant surface temperature was solved in the 19th century. In honor of Neumann, who first found an analytical solution, this kind of problem is generally referred to as the Neumann solution. As has been shown in Fig. 1, the problem to be analyzed is the freezing of a semi-infinite region (x > 0) which is initially liquid at the melting temperature with the surface (x = 0) maintained at time-dependent temperature. This analysis can be applied to the study of many casting processes where most of the heat removal is essentially unidirectional. "Heat balance integral" which has been used by Goodman1 is employed in this analysis. The concept of "heat balance integral" is to define a quantity, d(t), called the thermal layer. Beyond this thermal layer, for all practical purposes, there is no heat transfer, and the region is at the equilibrium temperature. "Heat balance integral" is obtained by integrating the conduction equation with respect to the space variable over this thermal layer d(t). Choosing some plausible temperature distribution, usually a polynomial or a finite trigonometric series in the space variable, this integral equation becomes an ordinary differential equation, with time as the independent variable, which can be solved by classical methods. The thermal layer and "heat balance integral" are equivalent, respectively, to the boundary-layer thickness and the momentum integral in hydrodynamics. A modern account of Prandtl's concept of the boundary layer and von Karman's momentum integral may be found in Ref. 2. Although the problem considered here has been limited initially to uniform melting temperature, the present method is equally applicable to the case with arbitrary temperature distribution in the liquid. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM The physical situation and coordinate system used in the problem to be analyzed are shown in Fig. 1. Notations used are listed in the table of nomenclature. ALTHOUGH the original thought of investigating waste in industry came from a mining engineer, Herbert Hoover, and although the chairman of that committee was a mining engineer (although the real work was done by the vice-chairman, L. W. Wallace), it is an interesting commentary that when the report first saw light, at St. Louis, on the first of June, 1921, some people most violently went up in the air when it was submitted by the representatives of the mining engineers. At the time they resented most markedly the report of the committee that 50 per cent. of the waste in industry, or as Mr. Ingalls in his paper has properly said, inefficiency in industry, was to be laid upon management. The reason for that seems to have been that, as a whole, the mining industry is pretty well organized and is superior to a large number of manufacturing industries including those studied by the Report. However, this very meeting shows that even the min-ing engineers have finally realized that there is waste or inefficiency in mining and that a large proportion of it can, with propriety, be assessed against management.

This remarkable mine, to which attention has lately been drawn, is situated not far from the New River, in Ashe County, North Carolina, on a spur of the Blue Ridge which lies between the main crest of this name and the so-called Iron Mountain, a part of the Unaka or Smoky Mountain range. It is on a true fissure-lode, which cuts the strata of gneiss and mica-schist of the region. These, which have the lithological characters of what I have called the Montalban or White Mountain series, have here a dip of about forty-five degrees to the southeast, while the lode is vertical, with a course north 60' east. Both the country-rock and the lode, as is usual in this region, are decomposed to considerable depths; and the latter exhibits a cap of hydrous peroxide of iron or gossan, blocks of which, left by the denudation of the softer inclosing rock, are scattered over the surface, and first called attention to the locality as a source of iron ore. In sinking upon this lode, it was found that the porous gossan at a certain depth became charged with carbonate and red oxide of copper, and lower down was replaced by sulphuretted ores of this metal of remarkable richness. This deposit was worked for copper, in an irregular manner, before the late civil war, but was afterwards abandoned, and only reopened during the present year, by Messrs. S. S. & J. E. Clayton, of Baltimore. The outcrop has been traced for 1900 feet, and the sulphuretted copper ores have been met with in five shafts in a distance of 661 feet, a drift having moreover been carried for the above distance through the solid ore. The breadth of the lode, so far as opened, varies from six to eight feet to fourteen feet in places, and that of the outcrop of gossan is, in some parts, twenty feet. After comparing this deposit with the copper mines of Ducktown, Polk County, Tennessee, and those of Carroll County, Virginia, it is evident that we have, at Ore Knob, to do with the same kind of black ores as were met with in these mines, and will be noticed further on, Beneath the gossan, at Ore Knob, is found, in some parts, an iron-black, friable, drusy, crystalline, sulphuretted ore, inclosing grains of quartz, garnet, and magnetite, besides a black non-magnetic mineral, not attacked by nitric acid. COMMENCEMENT exercises this year have a peculiar significance because the graduating students are entering upon their life's work at the most critical time in the history of the United States. We are engaged in a great struggle the outcome of which is none too clear even to the best informed students of international affairs. We are starting late in a vicious world conflict where it is generally recognized that our adversaries have distinct superiority over us in armament on the land, on the sea, and in the air. We have the gigantic task of building up our armed forces and armament and at the same time supplying our allies with equipment which they must have. We can do this job if we are given sufficient time, but there is a possibility that the war will be over before we are ready. Few realize the seriousness of this situation. If this fight is to be won-and we dare not try to visualize the future of this country if it is lost-all dissension and bickering between Congress, capital, labor, and agriculture must cease. When and where voluntary co-operation proves inadequate for the successful conduct of the war effort, laws must be enacted or strengthened to achieve our purpose.

The age of specialization has made man increasingly dependent on a larger number of different metals and minerals. Overexploitation during World War II and lavish squandering of irreplaceable mineral wealth in the past has resulted in the rapidly approaching exhaustion of some of the major domestic ore sources. History clearly points out that the United States cannot continue to be a world power on an "import to survive" policy. A constructive program of development and appraisal of the nation's mineral wealth, including the planned conservation of her resources, must be adopted. Strictly speaking, conservation of minerals must mean the orderly exploitation of our resources and the prevention of waste in use, with due regard for the future. Real concern for the future may not extend beyond a few generations. Eventually science and invention should take care of the problems arising from shortages of some minerals, and the national defense aspects of domestic deficiencies can be provided for by stock piling and other measures. Early conservationists had this viewpoint; but with a rapidly developing industry and population, a farsighted policy that would deny full realization of immediate ambitions became unpopular. Consequently, the politically minded conservationist broadened the concept to include "prudent use of resources" and brought under the conservation umbrella

IN ATTEMPTING to summarize briefly the reconstruction of the Hecla plant since the fire, three important facts must be held in mind; namely: a hurry-up job with the shadow of an insurance company in the background; restriction of working space in the narrow Burke Canyon; and building two-thirds of the plant on a filled area. Construction work was carried on without interruption through the winter season. These adverse conditions have contributed many obstacles not ordinarily encountered in mining work. The first problems immediately after the fire were organization and policy; the-former to create an efficient construction crew out of a mining organization; the latter to determine the type and extent of surface plant to be built. The new crew was organized from a nucleus of mine employees, 25 per cent. of the old crew remaining for construction work. Permanent fireproof buildings were decided upon, the general arrangement of the new plant to be similar to the old one as far as possible, at the same time enlarging it 100 per cent. in anticipation of the demands which would be made upon it when the Star Mine began operating. Cleaning up the wreckage was a big job, the extent of which is indicated by the fact that 30 carloads of scrap iron and steel were moved off the property. In re-establishing transportation facilities at the plant, a previous disadvantage of a steep grade on the high line was obviated by excavating 1600 yd. of solid rock; the fire having destroyed all town buildings below, made this work possible.

ONE of the first mining areas to be developed in Arizona was that in the district centering about Clifton and Morenci. Traces of metals were first noticed by Henry Clifton on an expedition in 1864. Definite copper outcroppings were also reported in the following year by General J. H. Carleton when he led his troops into the district on an Indian raid. Actual mining operations were started in the early seventies. and the first smelter was finished in 1873. Two adequately financed companies acquired most of the property, and both commenced production about 1882. These were the Arizona Copper Co.. owned by a group of Scotch investors, and the Detroit Copper Mining Co., afterwards purchased by the firm of Phelps, Dodge & Co. Later the Shannon Copper Co. acquired and operated a number of claims in the northern part of the district. These three companies all operated underground, mines independently for many years.

BEUTTER, St. Etienne* (communication to the Secretary-+):-Professor Howe observes in paragraph 47 of his paper that the fluid-compression of steel. diminishes piping by forcing the liquid and viscous metal, while the pipe is forming, or after it has formed, into the space so produced, and proceeds to study the different systems of compression, alluding to the four principal ones: Whitworth, Illingworth, Williams, and Harmet. Having now for many years had in use the last-named process, that of M. Henri Harmet, I shall attempt to explain the difference between it and the three other processes named. The Harmet process does not diminish or close the pipe after it has formed, but prevents it from forming; and I may add that it is the only one of the four which produces this result. It is true that the Whitworth process diminishes the interior hollow by localizing it around the central axis of the ingot, which is afterwards removed by trepanning the hollow forgings for which this process has been, I believe, always exclusively used. The Illingworth and Williams processes, which, in my opinion, are applicable only to small ingots, of necessity allow the pipe to form, or (to use the expression of Professor Howe) they allow the surface of the lake of liquid steel to sink into the interior of the ingot, since they involve waiting a certain time before compression, so that (in the case of the Williams process) the ingot-mold can be opened without dan¬ger, or (in the case of the Illingworth process) so as to avoid the risk that the steel may enter the grooves produced by the removal of the distance-bars. Most of the geological data appearing in the technical press are based on "careful observations" made from an auto stage and a casual glance through the U. S. Geological Survey Bulletins, No. 340 of 1908 or No. 397 of 1909, both by F. C. Schrader. Mr. Schrader's report is still the best publication on the district. A really careful study of this report will uncover only a very few statements which have since proven questionable. This is a remarkable record when it is considered that only a short time was spent by Mr. Schrader in the field and that there was very little development work done at that time. The mining world and especially Mohave County, Ariz., will feel a sense of gratitude to Mr. Schrader for revising his early report. on this

FIRES in heavily timbered mines are disastrous, involving danger to both life and property. Some mines have been completely ruined or so heavily damaged that reopening them would not pay. Though few mines are entirely free from danger of fire, the risk is minimized by proper care and good design of plant. The Tintic Standard mine is at Dividend, Utah, in the famous Tintic mining district, about 60 miles south of Salt Lake City. The development of the mine was begun in 1907 by the late Mr. E. J. Raddatz and his associates. From the beginning, the work was hampered by high rock temperatures and the presence of high concentrations of rock gases such as carbon dioxide and nitrogen. Development work was carried on with great perseverance for nine years, and resulted in the discovery of ore in 1916. The total production of the Tintic Standard mine to Jan. 1, 1936, amounted to 1,664,388 tons of ore, having a gross value of .$61,996,719.
