The structural stability of any mine or under- ground opening in rock is dependent on the stress field, that is, the state of stress in rock before mining, the stress distribution in the rock created by the opening, and the in situ strength of the rock. In the past mine design problems have been considered by assuming that the stress field is due only to the weight of the overlying rock, the stress around the opening can be calculated from elastic theory using laboratory-determined elastic constants, and the in situ strength of the rock can be determined from laboratory tests on small specimens. Solutions to hypothetical problems using this procedure are given in a report by Obert, Duvall, and Merrill.' Because of the uncertainties of these assumptions, this method can give only a rough approximation to the solution of actual structural problems. Obviously, this approach to determining the stability of underground openings would be greatly improved if the rock stress could be measured in situ, and it is undoubtedly for this reason that in recent years many investigators have spent considerable effort on the development of procedures for measuring rock stress. In this report a method is described for determining in situ the absolute stress in rock. The method requires the measurement of the deformation of a borehole before and after the rock is stress-relieved. The magnitude and direction of the applied stresses are calculated from the borehole deformation and modulus of elasticity of the rock. Also, the results of absolute stress determination made in the walls and pillars of underground openings in five rock types are presented. From these results a number of conclusions are drawn regarding the accuracy and limitations of this method and the problem of stress measurements in general.

BERYLLIUM has certain properties such as low density, high hardness, good corrosion resistance, low thermal expansion and fairly good electrical conductivity, which would indicate that it, is worthy of consideration as an ingredient of light alloys. It was not until recently, however, that beryllium could be produced with sufficient ease to encourage research along this line. The production of beryllium by electrolysis from a fluoride bath has now developed to the stage where it could be used commercially if there were sufficient demand for the element. Claims made in certain newspapers and technical articles in regard to the strength and corrosion resistance of the aluminum-beryllium alloys are not justified by experimental results. Moreover, beryllium is an expensive metal ($200 a pound at the time this work was done) and, on account of the nature of its ore and the consequent difficulty of its extraction, it will in all probability continue to be a relatively expensive metal, although the cost would undoubtedly be a great deal less than $200 a pound if the metal were produced on a large scale. It seemed, therefore, that low-beryllium alloys offered the greater commercial possibilities except for very special purposes. It was partly for this reason that in the present work emphasis has been placed on beryllium alloys of low beryllium content.

The oil embargo and increasing disillusionment with nu- clear power have put this country's abundant coal reserves in growing demand. Both the government and industry are looking toward increased coal mining, and with this goes an increased interest in new and advanced methods of coal utilization. One advanced coal system stands out among the rest-magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). Its high efficiency, strong probability of sulfur dioxide control, and limited consumption of cooling water place MHD in a unique position to help the power generation industry. Another point in MHD's favor is the capital costs of operation, which are lower than those of other advanced technologies. However, initial costs are higher and realization of a commercial MHD plant in this country may be more than a decade away.

ECONOMICAL handling of a minimum of 25,000 tons of minus 3/4-in. ore per day, grinding it to 2 per cent on 65 mesh, and effecting a high recovery of the copper at the lowest possible cost were the principal aims in the design of the new Morenci concentrating plant. Dealing with a tonnage of this magnitude, it is obvious that lost motion cannot be tolerated. When ore is carried on a conveyor an unnecessarily long distance or elevated to a greater height than necessary, or when pulp flows in a launder by a circuitous route thereby losing elevation and distance, we have lost motion which is always costly both from the standpoint of construction and operation. In addition to the 25,000 tons of ore which must be handled, 100,000 tons of water per day has to be carried through the plant in the treatment of the ore. Though water is not so difficult to handle as the ore, the combined tonnage represents a figure which could easily run into a considerable monetary loss per day if all phases of the design were not carefully followed with the idea of eliminating any unnessary handing of materials.

An experimental determination has been made of the efject of surface diffusion on the vapor pressure obtained in a Kwudsen cell. The results show that a knife-edge orifice in a molybdenum lid may give erroneous results for the vapor pressure of silver. when a correction suggested by winterbottom and Hirth is made, the results become meaningful. Experimental work with cylindrical orifices in molyhdenz~m lids and knife-edge orifices in ceramic lids shows that good vapor-pressure results may he obtained when the orifice is designed so that ejfusion is the only significant source of weight loss. THE Knudsen effusion cell technique has been used by many investigators to study relative and absolute vapor pressures over metals and alloys at elevated temperatures. As a result of this interest, some theoretical studies have been made of geometric factors affecting effusion from the orifice of a Knudsen cell. A review of these studies has been made by Margrave.1 Recently, Winterbottom and Hirth2 have suggested that a physical effect, that of condensation, surface diffusion, and re-evaporation, may seriously affect Knudsen cell measurements, especially when a knife-edge orifice is used. Inasmuch as many of the present vapor-pressure data have been obtained using knife-edge orifices. it was felt that an experimental evaluation of the effect of surface diffusion on Knudsen cell measurements would be of value both in the design of the cell orifice and in establishing realistic estimates of the limits of error for existing data. The experimental program was in two sections. Firstly, measurements of the vapor pressure of silver were made in cells with cylindrical and conical orifices in which the surface-diffusion contribution to the weight loss should be negligible. These results were correlated with existing data to give a reliable measure of the real vapor pressure of silver. Secondly, measurements made using knife-edge orifices were corrected using the surface-diffusion theory of Winterbottom and Hirth2 and were then compared to the real values. The experimental arrangement is shown in Fig. 1. The balance was an Ainsworth RV-AU-1 automatic recording microbalance capable of measuring weight changes of ±0.02 mg on a total load of up to 100 g. The temperature was measured by an optical pyrometer signted on the bottom of the suspended crucible. The temperature readings were calibrated in a separate experiment in which pyrometer measurements were made while at the same time thermocouple readings were taken of the temperature at the inside top and bottom of the crucible. The range of reproducibility with this technique was ±4°C. A constant voltage source maintained a temperature of ±2°C at 1200°C over 10 hr. Silver of 99.99 pct purity was used in nonporous alumina crucibles. Lids of molybdenum, tantalum, or magnesia were cemented to the crucible using a sodium silicate cement. An internal-friction profile induced by nitrogen in Cr-35 at. pet Re was studied as a function of nitrogen concentration and heat treatment. From these studies, the solubility of nitrogen in this alloy was deduced. The equilibrium solubility of nitrogen in chromium does not appear to be substantially changed by the addition of 35 at. pet Re to chromium. However the precipitation kinetics of nitrogen from solution are significantly decreased. IT has been found that rhenium has a beneficial effect on the low-temperature ductility of Group VI-A metals. As part of a study to investigate the mechanism of this increased ductility, it was of interest to compare the concentration of interstitials retained in solution in one of these ductile bee alloys with the concentration retained in solution in its base metal. In this regard, a study of the solubility of nitrogen in ductile Cr-35 at. pet Re was selected for this phase of the investigation because the solubility of nitrogen in the base metal, chromium, has been determined over a fairly large temperature span.1-3 In addition, nitrogen is known to have an embrittling effect on chromium,4 but does not appear to have a comparable embrittling effect on Cr-35 at. pet Re.5 The experimental method selected for this study was the measurement of internal friction. This technique allows interstitial-concentration measurements to be made in bee metals that are sensitive to small changes in the concentration of a particular interstitial, even when other interstitials are present. When subjected to a cyclic stress, interstitial atoms in solid solution give rise to an internal-friction peak whose origin is the stress-induced ordering of interstitials into preferred lat- tice sites. These internal-friction peaks signify a dissipation of elastic energy which is greatest when the period of oscillation is comparable with the relaxation time for the attainment of an equilibrium interstitial distribution. For dilute interstitial binary alloys, the height of the internal-friction peak is proportional to the concentration of interstitial atoms in solid solutions. snoek8 has shown that the internal friction, Q-1, may be expressed by the equation where A is the relaxation strength, ? is the angular frequency, and 7 is the relaxation time. The relaxation strength, A, is proportional to the concentration of interstitials taking part in the relaxation if no interaction occurs between solute atoms. Thus values of peak height, which can be determined as a function of temperature, give a measure of the relative concentration of interstitial atoms in solution at various temperatures. If equilibrium has been attained, the peak heights will be proportional to the interstitial solubilities. The constant that relates A to the interstitial concentration can be determined experimentally from peak-height measurements as a function of concentration for specimens of constant crystallographic orientation. When this has been done, Q-1 measurements can be used to determine solubilities according to the equation C - KQ-1 where C is the soluble interstitial concentration and K is a constant that can be experimentally determined. It is possible, however, that lattice imperfections may bind interstitials to certain lattice sites. Internal friction does not measure these interstitial~, but does measure interstitials which are free to move in the normal lattice sites when subjected to an applied oscillating stress. Zinc metal production in the operating plants in the United States during 1948 was approximately equal to that of the year 1947, although new developments during the year assure higher output in 1949, if economic conditions are favorable. In the Western plants, the man-power shortage was almost completely overcome and new capacity has been or is in the process of being added to three plants; thus by December of 1948 daily zinc metal production had risen to the highest point since May of 1944 despite strikes in one large primary smelter and in one secondary plant.

SUGGESTIONS that existing schools give instruction bearing on the mineral industry, or that schools for that purpose should be established in the United States, began to be made early, and it would require too much space to catalogue them all. Some of the more important may be mentioned to indicate their general character. In the "advertisement to such parents as have now (or expect to have) children prepared to be educated in the College of New York," which appeared in the New York Mercury of June 3, 1754, Samuel Johnson, the first president of King's College, the predecessor of Columbia, said that it was the "design of this college to instruct and perfect the youth," among other things, "in the arts of Numbering and Measuring of Surveying, and Navigation and Geography. . . . and in the Air, Water and Earth around us, and the various kinds of Meteors, Stones, Mines and Minerals, Plants and Animals; and in the knowledge of all Nature in the Heavens above us, and of everything useful for the Comfort, Convenience and the Elegance of Life . . . " Though the concept that natural science should be used to enlarge the bounds of human life was thus implicit at Columbia from the , very beginning (John Stevens graduated from it in 1768, James Renwick in 1807, Horatio Allen in 1833, and A. W. Craven in 1899), it was only during the period of Renwick's professorship of Natural and Experimental Philosophy and Chemistry (1830- 1853) that much attention was given to applied science.* Among the Austin papers, published by the American Historical Association,~ there is a draft in Stephen F. 13.7-1. General. Iron ore mining in western Europe is mostly carried out underground and only a minor part is mined by open pit methods. Actual open pits of importance in this connection are, among others, Svappavaara in Sweden, Mo i Rana and Sydvaranger in Norway, Corby Mines, Colsterworth, and Scunthorpe in Great Britain, and in western Africa, Nimba and Bong Range in Liberia, and Kedia d’Idjil in Mauritania. The open pit mines of western Africa are of great interest in this connection as they are designed according to European practice and have accepted the same techniques, methods, equipment, etc. as the European mines. In the surface mining of limestone, granite, shale, etc., the technical conditions generally are similar with those in the iron ore mines. Some information will therefore be submitted from typical quarries. The geological conditions at the various iron ore mines and limestone and other quarries vary extensively. In Scandinavia the iron ores occur exclusively in Precambrian rocks. The ore is hard, mostly magnetite or hematite, folded and steep dipping, and hence accessible to surface mining only in the shallow sections. In the mines referred to, open pit mining will last for another 10 to 30 years, whereupon mining has to be continued by underground methods. In France the Minette iron ore has previously been mined in open pits but, because of increased overburden, mining underground with room and pillar methods now dominates. The iron ores are Jurassic, flatlying strata of oolitic type, containing chamosite, siderite, and brown hematite. The British iron ores are mostly of the same origin and appearance as the French deposits, but despite heavy overburden they are preferably mined from the surface. In western Africa, the iron ores are of the same type as in Brazil, i.e., itabirites with high-grade portions resulting from silica-leaching and weathering. The ore contains mostly brown and blue hematite and magnetite. Nimba and Kedia d’Idjil are very similar regarding ore quality and geology. Bong Range is a deposit of low-grade ore which has to be concentrated.

The question arises as to whether any increase in capacity accompanied the 11-ton addition. It is hardly conceivable that all of the balls making up the l l-ton addition were sterile. However, as the work done in the ball mill is not by kilo-watthours per se or balls per se but by kilowatthour-balls, it is possible that the kilowatthourballs in the mill before the ll-ton addition had a different amperage, voltage or robustage than those in the mill after the addition and that the overall outcome was that equal work was done before and after the addition. The authors can keep the efficiency that they got with the 45 pct volume 1-in. ball charge and get additional capacity by putting more kilowatthourballs to work in the form of the addition of 11 tons of 2-in. balls to the present ball charge, and subsequent makeup additions by weight of 20 pct 2-in. balls and 80 pct 1-in. balls. J. F. Myers (authors' reply)-—Mr. Garms points his finger at the 11 tons of "sterile" balls added to the Tri-cone mill. A fact so interesting to us that we felt it should be reported. Clearly, ball slippage at the existing mill speed prevented any further transfer of power from the shell to the ball mass. We agree that the kilowatthourballs would increase, were we charging rough 2-in. balls as suggested by Mr. Garms. The assumption is, of course, that we would get a corresponding increase in work done. Our reported data (CIME meeting, Vancouver, 1946) shows a gain of work accomplished of 7.6 pct as we decreased the ball size from 2 in. to 1% in. and a further gain of work accomplished of 2.1 pct when we went from 1 % in. to 1 in. The small ball results reported by H. R. Banks at Chapman Camp are also very convincing. In the case of 2-in. balls they would take the conventional ball path and start cascading. This paper brings within the compass of one comparatively brief article a general description of the situation concerning the nation's water resources. It touches upon the phenomenal growth in the demand for water supply and emphasizes the problems facing the coal industry both with regard to acid mine water drainage discharged from active and abandoned mines and the suspended solids discharged to the stream system from wet coal preparation plants.

The work reported in this paper was carried out to supplement the existing information concerning directional properties and recrystallization textures of annealed brass sheet and strip. These characteristics are of direct interest when the forming and drawing properties of such material are being considered. Among those who have made contributions in this field are Bass and G1ocker;l Bauer, Göler and Sachs;2 Phillips and Samans;3 Pratt;4 Price;5 Cook;6 Richards;7 Brick;8 and Brick and Williamson.9 These investigators have found, in general, that in brass strip that shows directional variations in properties, tensile strength has a minimum value and elongation has a maximum value at 45' to the rolling direction. The most pronounced directional properties have been found in material given the greatest reductions in rolling followed by high annealing temperatures. Recrystallization texture of brass has been variously reported as (II3)[II2], (ooi)[ioo], and a combination of (II0)[II5] and traces of the primary rolling texture, (110)[112]. The directional studies have been very informative, but actual tests appear to have been confined to material in its final condition. Tests at intermediate stages have received little attention although previous history of some materials has been partly considered. Perhaps the most comprehensive investigation was made by Cook,' who studied the directional properties of 70-30 brass strip for which the final and penultimate, or next to the last, anneals and the final reductions were varied. He found that, for any given combination of penultimate anneal and final reduction, the tendency toward the development of directional properties was reduced as the temperature of the final anneal was decreased. In addition to drawing cups and making tensile tests of the finished material at various angles to the rolling direction, he measured the frequency and the angles of twins in grains for several specimens. Plots of his twin counts showed directionality for the materials that produced eared cups. Test Materials and Equipment For this investigation, one commercial heat of 68-32 brass was cast in the form of bars for cold-rolling, I31/2 in wide and I1/2 in. thick. The analysis was as follows: 68.83 per cent copper, 0.04 per cent lead, 0.01 per cent iron, 31.12 per cent zinc (by difference). The bars were so processed to the final thickness, 0.020 in., as to obtain on this thickness all possible combinations of the variables listed below except those involving the sequence of 84 per cent penultimate reduction and 84 per cent final reduction: I. Penultimate reductions of 37 per cent, 50 per cent and 84 per cent; 2. Penultimate anneals at 800°, 900°, 1050° and 1200°F.; 3. Final reductions of 37 per cent, 50 per cent, 69 per cent and 84 per cent;

THE Sullivan concentrator has completed 20 years of operation. During this period a considerable amount of data has been accumulated concerning the characteristics of several types of flotation machines in their application to the problem of the differential separation of the lead sulphide, zinc sulphide and, in more recent times, iron sulphide, in the ore from the Sullivan mine. It is the author's intention to sketch briefly experiences encountered when the several types of flotation machines were introduced into the flow. ORIGINAL FLOTATION EQUIPMENT AND ORE The original flotation equipment consisted of four 18-cell lead-roughing machines, whose concentrate was cleaned in an 8-cell and recleaned in a similar 8-cell machine. Zinc concentration was carried out in four 18-cell machines. One 8-cell zinc re-treatment machine received the reground zinc middling. The 168 cells handled some 3000 tons of original daily feed. These cells were of the standard Minerals Separation type, equipped with 24-in. impellers. Spindles were driven through geared line shaft at a speed of 255 r.p.m. The impellers were the 45° type, except for the last three cells of the zinc-rougher machines, which were of sub-aeration type, with full bottom shroud and half shroud for the top side of the impellers. Four-pound air was introduced. This recognition of the benefit of intensified flotation operation for "gleaning" was an important phase in the early operation and will be discussed further on in this paper. Sullivan ore during this period is described as a finely disseminated mixture of four sulphides, totaling 90 per cent made up of 13.6 per cent galena, 14.4 per cent marmatite, 1 per cent pyrite and 61 per cent pyrrhotite. The specific gravity of the ore was approximately 4.4. There has been a gradual change in the ore content. The 10 per cent of nonsulphide constituents has increased to between 15 and 20 per cent and all three sulphides have dropped somewhat. Added equipment and changing technique have made possible the treatment of 8000 tons per day of mill feed instead of the 3000 originally handled. SPECIAL FEATURES OF FLOTATION AT SULLIVAN Sullivan flotation differs greatly from customary practice. The very heavy return of lead rougher middling and lead cleaner tailing, totaling at times 125 per cent of the new feed tonnage, has been the subject of much investigation. The practice is still employed.

AMONG naturally occurring inorganic compounds, magnetite has many unusual and interesting properties, and it is the purpose of this paper to call attention to these properties and review possible uses of magnetite that might be based on them; in other words, to see what uses may be found for magnetite as a physical rather than as a chemical entity, as a mineral rather than as an iron ore. The Mineral Physics Studies initiated in the Metallurgical Division of the U. S. Bureau of Mines a few years ago gathered together much information on mineral properties, and they are therefore the principal source of material for this paper. Magnetic Properties Of Magnetite And Possible Uses As A Magnetic Material Magnetite is unique among minerals for its great magnetic susceptibility, approximately one-third that of soft iron, and some magnetites are permanent magnets, or lodestones. The literature contains many measurements of magnetic properties of individual magnetite crystals, but no systematic survey of the effect of mechanical preparation and heat-treatment was available until the recent investigations of the Bureau of which included not only susceptibility but coercive force and remanence as well. For the purpose of orientation, Table 1 gives the magnetic properties of several samples of magnetite and of a few other substances3. This table indicates that when ordinary magnetite is powdered it decreases in susceptibility and increases in coercive force and remanence, approaching the properties of lodestone. The properties of lodestone are in fact probably due to the development of very large internal surface on fine grain size4.

The feasibility of reducing pressures needed to fracture formations by heating the borehole intensively has been investigated on a laboratory scale. Reductions in fracture pressures of heated Bandera, Berea and Boise sandstone cores were observed at various confining pressures, simulating reservoir stress conditions to a depth of 5,000 ft. Both permeable and impermeable borehole boundary conditions were tested. Three heating conditions were used in the tests. One group of samples was heated in a furnace to a temperature of 600C, cooled to room temperature., and then tested for fracture pressures. Two other groups of samples were heated with a borehole heater to maximum borehole wall temperatures of 625 and 792C, then cooled and tested. In all cases, heated samples showed substantial reductions in fracture pressures compared to unheated samples. The higher temperature borehole heated samples showed the greatest reduction, amounting to 70 per cent in the extreme case. In actual application to wells, it was concluded that fracture pressures may be reduced by 20 to 50 per cent by intensive borehole heating before fracturing. INTRODUCTION Hydraulic fracturing of oil and gas wells is an accepted and effective technique for increasing well productivity in many areas, but is notoriously unsuccessful in other areas. The technique becomes less interesting for production stimulation purposes when excessive fracture pressures are necessary. Formations which do fracture but require high pressures, probably form horizontal fractures. There is good evidence to indicate that some formations do not fracture at all, but yield plastically under high pressure. Thus, any technique which will make formations easier to fracture or will reduce fracture pressures is potentially interesting to petroleum producers. Horizontal fractures generally occur in planes of weakness, such as bedding planes, and at pressures equaling or exceeding the effective overburden stress. In the unusual case where planes of weakness do not exist, a slightly higher pressure must be applied to overcome the tensile strength of the rock. In general, high fluid-loss fracturing fluids are conducive to the formation of horizontal fractures.1 Vertical fractures, when they do occur, are initiated at pressures generally lower than overburden pressure and are favored by low fluid-loss fracturing fluids or impermeable boreholes. The pressure necessary to create a vertical fracture in an impermeable, elastic medium can be predicted from the so-called "thick-walled cylinder" equation: Pf = 2 or+ st.............(1) where pf = fracture pressure or = radial stress st = tensile strength of medium. This equation indicates that to fracture it is necessary to overcome a tangential compressive stress, induced by and equal to two times the radial confining stress, plus the tensile strength of the medium. If the above equation held strictly true for rocks, very little could be done to reduce fracture pressure. The tensile strength of the rock might be reduced somewhat, but any change in st would be small compared to the magnitude of the tangential stress at reasonable subsurface depths. Laboratory tests have shown that actual fracture pressures exceed values predicted from Eq. 1 by factors of 1.4 to 28.6.1,2 Eq. 1 thus does not properly describe the

NUMEROUS results and formulas have been published for analyzing seismic records, but most of them apply only to large-scale phenomena such as are encountered in studying earthquakes. In a few cases,1 formulas have been published for some of the simpler structures. In the present paper, an attempt will be made to analyze several types of struc-tures without using methods more advanced than those of a first course in calculus. In, tracing a disturbance through a medium, it is almost always possible to base the analysis on Fermat's Principle of Extreme Time, which states that waves of displacement travel between points in such a manner as to make the time of travel an extremum with respect to all neighboring paths. In the simpler cases, comprising most of those used in optics or geophysical prospecting, this time is a minimum and the principle is often referred to as the Principle of Least Time. Within a homogeneous medium, having a uniform speed of transmission of the disturbance in all directions and throughout the medium, the paths are straight and are refracted at the interfaces in accordance with the Snell law of refraction, which states that the ratio of the sine of the angle, made by the ray with the normal to the interface, to the speed of trans-mission is the same on both sides of the interface. Thus, in any medium composed of homogeneous sections, this same ratio has a constant value at all points. In particular, if all interfaces are horizontal, it is apparent that the angles of incidence are the angles made by the ray with the vertical direction. Furthermore, the incident ray, the refracted ray and the normal to the interface are all in the same plane at each refraction;

FOREWOHD-Americans have been able to create wealth from the nation's natural resources to an extent unprecedented in recorded history, thanks largely to the existence of a free market and of a rational body of laws. The General Mining Law of 1872, for instance, by establishing the rules of the game, was quite effective in channeling the ability of Americans to discover and develop mineral deposits. Another example was the Mineral Leasing Act of 1920 which made available the more easily discovered mineral deposits by spelling out the conditions and rules under which miners could obtain leases on federal lands.
