In view of the circumstance that very few important changes have been made within the last 15 or 20 years in the equipment of rod and wire mills, the description of a new process introduced by Grenville Mellen, of LleweIIyn Park, N. J., to take the place of the present laborious system of producing rods of lead, zinc, brass, copper, aluminum, etc., may be interesting to members of the Institute. This new process consists in the production of cast rods at one operation in a small continuous casting machine. The hot liquid metal is transferred from the melting crucibles directly into an endless chain of mold blocks in the machine, where solidification takes place, and the rod comes out continuously in a solid form at one end as long as the molten metal is supplied. The operation of these mold blocks so as to produce a solid rod of uniform structure constitutes an important part of Mr. Mellen's invention. The machine (Figs. 1 and 2), 12 ft. in height over all, 2 by 3 ft. in horizontal cross-sectional area, and 6,000 Ib. in weight, has a framework of cast iron, holding in position two endless chains of mold blocks, which are made in sections and join in center alignment. The mold orifice is made up of these mold sections, into which the liquid metal flows. The molding chains are composed of steel blocks, grooved on one face to form the molding cavity, and linked together with flexible joints. Each block is carried on four rollers which guide the chain around the end sprockets and carry it in its course through the machine. The accuracy of alignment requisite to the production of a perfect rod in the mold groove formed by these sections is secured by careful machine work, and by building the four ways, down which the alignment takes place, so that two of the sides are fixed permanently, whiIe the opposite sides are held to their position by spring pressure. The guides carrying the molds, while in casting position, are water-cooled square tubes. The length of this machine is somewhat indeterminate. A certain amount of both time and cooling surface is required to solidify the metal jn the mold; and one may either use a long molding chain and run it fast, or a shorter chain and run it correspondingly slower. The failure, or disintegration, of concrete in structures, even when the cement, sand, and coarse aggregate used have passed satisfactorily all tests and inspections, is not uncommon. Such failures occur even when proper methods of mixing and placing have been used and where weather conditions were correct. In these cases, the origin of the trouble must be sought in the cement; therefore some additional mode of determining the quality of cement must be employed. The problem is to find a simple, usable, easily applied method that will supplement the standard tests. The solution of this problem involves a knowledge of the chemical composition of Portland cements, also of their constitution (or componental composition), as the behavior of a cement, when gaged, is dependent on the physical and chemical characters of the compounds of which it is composed, the proportions existing between them, and the fineness of grinding. It is likewise essential to know the character, behavior, and composition of the hydration products of Portland cement. The most promising method of attack makes use of chemical, mechanical, and petrographic methods. Chemical, by determining quantitatively not only the usual constituents, but the carbon dioxide and water. Mechanical, by determining the fineness with the air analyzer,' which separates into fractions of various grain dimensions all of that portion which in the ordinary sieve test passes the 200-mesh sieve and constitutes at least 75 per cent. of the total cement. These fractions may be further studied chemically and petrographically and micrometric measurements can be made of the grains. Petrographic, by the method of immersion, and by making thin sections from test pats of both neat cements and standard mortars. In a recent technical note, Owen Thornton&apos; suggests that wetting liquid relative permeability may be derived from the relationship: where Pd/Pc is the ratio of displacement pressure to capillary pressure at the wetting liquid satdration Sw, and I is the resistivity index at this saturation. Thornton shows that this expression gives values for relative permeability in good agreement with those experimentally determined by Leverett. We have recently developed another expression for krw which seems preferable to Equation 1 since it requires fewer experimental data for its verification. This equation may be derived in the following manner. Making use of the analogy between mass transfer of fluid in a porous medium and electrical conductivity through the fluid in the same medium, we can postulate a hydraulic formation resistivity factor analogous to an electrical formation resistivity factor. From Poiseuille&apos;s Law the resistivity to flow in a tube of radius R is of the form 8u/R², where is the viscosity of the fluid. Similarly7 the resistivity to flow in a porous medium of the same dimensions as the tube is given by D&apos;Arcy&apos;s Law as where k is the permeability of the medium. The hydraulic formation resistivity factor, Ff, is thus the quotient of these two resistivities, or: But permeability is defined by the KO-zeny equation as: where: r is the average pore radius of the porous medium, L. is the average tortuous length of the average pore, + is the porosity, and L is the bed length. This gives Fr as a function of the (La/L) .-.-.tortuosity ratio and porosity, or in explicit form: where: T = (La/L)&apos;, and N is the number of pores of radius, r, which will be found in any cross sectional area, x R&apos;. That is, N = R²/r². It will be clear from the foregoing considerations that the hydraulic formation fat. tor should be dependent on the value of R which in every case must be arbitrarily selected. Computations based on Leverett&apos;s data, quoted by Thorntaon, gives computed krw values somewhat lower than the experimental values. Moreover, other instances can be cited where we find that neither Equation 1 nor Equa tion 2 is checked by experimental data. The work of Botset&apos; on the Nichols Buff sandstone and Morse et a1 on oil wetted Bradford sandstone are such instances. A reason for these discrepancies may lie in the fact that if both Equations 1 and 2 are presumed always to give accurate values for krw, it follows that PC = Pd/Sw". Such an expression, it is well known, is too simple to describe accurately the capillary pressure behavior of all porous media. However, it is believed that a particular advantage resides on the use of Equation 2, since it is not dependent for its utility on a knowledge of the capillary pressures obtaining in dynamic flow svsterns. No practical technique for measuring the capillary pressures characterizing the fluid distributions in dynamic flow systems has yet been proposed. Acknowledgment is given to Dr. Paul D. IN a previous study1 of the effect of heating com-mercial titanium in air on its subsequent friction coefficient against other metals, as well as itself, it was found that the friction coefficient markedly decreased from a value of about 0.7 to about 0.3. A tentative explanation was given that surfaces normally produced at room temperature are not contaminated sufficiently to prevent seizing or welding of the titanium to the softer mating metals. The latter tend to cleanse themselves during rubbing over the harder titanium. It was thought that the lack of a contaminant protective film on the titanium was due to the high solubility of titanium for oxygen and nitrogen and hence an inability to form a contaminant oxide or nitride. This explanation requires the ratio of the surface absorption rate to the diffusion rate to become much lower at room temperature than it is at high temperatures. In order to check the phenomenon further, commercial titanium specimens were nitrided or oxidized at 800°C for 20 hr in flows of prepurified N2 and 01, respectively, at about 1/2 in. H2O above atmospheric pressure. Friction runs were made in argon using a freshly cut copper hemisphere (cut in argon) on surfaces cut successively into the diffusion layers in the titanium (cut in argon) using the techniques described in a previous publication.&apos; DPH values (100 gram load) were made as a function of depth into the diffusion layer using a Tukon tester. Also, micrographs were taken at separate cross sections to indicate the diffusion layers. The results obtained are presented in Figs. 1 and 2, which show the "static" friction coefficient vs hardness for the nitrided and oxidized specimens, respectively. A separate measurement of the friction coefficient of clean copper vs iodide titanium also was made. From results reported in the literature&apos; giving the oxygen and nitrogen contents as functions of the hardness, cross plots were made showing the friction coefficients as functions of the amount of interstitial solute. These plots are given in Figs. 3 and 4. From micrographs of the diffusion layers and the phase diagrams, it was deduced that the data in Figs. l through 4 correspond to the single phase a region. The points observed on the compound regions have been excluded from the figures. It is apparent that nitrogen or oxygen in solution in the a titanium markedly affects the friction coefficient against a softer mating metal. Discussion of Results These results are extremely interesting from both a practical and theoretical viewpoint. The theoretical implications will be discussed first. According to Bowden, the friction coefficient should be given to a good approximation by the relation where a is the fraction of contact area that has welded, a is the shear strength of weaker component, and H is the hardness of softer component. Using this relation alone, it is difficult to understand the results because none of the terms should be affected by a variation in the oxygen or nitrogen content of the harder and stronger metal, titanium. Even if the ratio of S/H for titanium is used in Eq. 1, the ratio has been shown to be independent of oxy-gen or nitrogen content.&apos; If a more rigorous equa-tion is used combining Eq. 1 and a result given pre-viously" for the case where welding is absent, then the relation obtained is µ = a S/H + (1-a) a W aß/H where a is constant and Waß is the work of adhesion between the two metals comprising the friction couple. This relation states that if a is less than 1/2 or so, variation in the work of adhesion Waß between copper and the titanium should affect the friction coefficient markedly. It is reasonable to expect that the work of adhesion will depend on the oxygen or nitrogen content of the titanium. Available data4 show that clean metals and oxides have much lower works of adhesion than the same metals against the

ABILITY to speak effectively is one of man&apos;s most longed for and coveted abilities. It is the ability to stand on one&apos;s feet, transfer knowledge and thoughts to others, to reach an objective professionally or otherwise by leading groups through a channel of planned thought. Each day group speaking plays an important part in making or marring success, and the engineering profession often provides this opportunity and requirement. An ability to speak effectively develops courage, poise, confidence, and prestige for the speaker. The technical man cannot be reluctant to face an audience. He is often called upon to do this in presence of employees, supervisors, and other groups. His ability to speak effectively is as much a requirement as the fundamentals of his profession. The three fundamentals of effective speaking are: (1) Enthusiasm and Confidence. These are joined because of their close relation. (2) Preparation. This includes knowledge of the subject. (3) Presentation. By this is meant the features of delivery.

FEDERAL regulation of the petroleum resources of the nation has long been an interesting topic for discussion. A plan to accomplish Federal control has now taken definite form. At the request of the President of the United States, a bill to be known as the Petroleum Conservation Act of 1939 has been presented to Congress-H. R. 7372, offered by Representative Wm. P. Cole, Jr., and more usually known as the Cole bill. It is an act ostensibly designed to conserve our petroleum resources, through regulation of production practices. Hearings are being held currently by a subcommittee of the Interstate and Foreign Commerce Committee, in compliance with the request of the President to report the bill early in the next session of Congress.

The crushing of ore, as defined by Taggart, is "usually a stage process, utilizing . . . machines especially suitable for the reduction of particular sizes. . . . down to a final stage, employed for the reduction of the finest sizes. ... In contradistinction, comminution to 20-mesh or finer is called grinding. There is a twilight zone in which the product is 6, 10, or 14-mesh limiting size which is either crushing or grinding. ..." Since the data in this paper pertain to a rod-mill operation, comminuting a particular ore size of ¾ in. to a final stage, coarser than 20-mesh, the rod mill is designated as a "fine crusher machine" in this paper. The published literature discloses a wealth of data regarding a rod mill as a fine-grinding machine but relatively little as a fine-crushing operation. Typical of the latter operation is: (I) a description by F. J. Tuck2 in which a fine-crushing rod mill replaced crushing rolls and (2) a description by the present authors3 in which a fine-crushing rod mill was installed instead of a collventional fine-crushing machine. The experience of the authors is that a definite distinction must he made between the rod mill functioning as a fine crusher and as a fine-grinding machine. As a fine crushing machine it prepares relatively large amounts of ore for a subsequent fine grinding operation; as a grinding machine, it grinds relatively small amounts of ore to some predetermined finished product. Pulp Movement and Action in Mill In considering the work performed by a fine-crushing rod mill, it seems important to understand just what takes place within the mill. We were inspired to study this matter by a paper by E. W. Davis,4 which indicated that definite water classification of ore particles took place in a ball mill. However, in thinking of the rod-mill action from this point of view, we were confronted with the fact that our rod-mill discharge product showed no evidence of action by water classification. The Tennessee Copper Co. ore is relatively high in sulphides, and the gangue rock and the sulphides are of about the same hardness. In the presence of any action by classification, the coarser sizes are definitely very lean in sulphide minerals.

Canada&apos;s newest low-grade porphyry copper mine, Gibralter Mines Ltd. (N.P.L.), has reached production. The subsidiary of Placer Development Ltd., located at Williams Lake in the Caraboo District of central British Columbia, began open pit mining in mid-June on reserves estimated at 358 million tons assaying 0.373r: Cu and 0.016C; MoS,. Each of four separate zones will be mined in a predetermined sequence, in one or more stages, and with a throughput of more than 36,000 tpd. The sequence and stages of mining the zones have been determined by computer calculation and economic analysis and are designed to maximize recovery and minimize cost. At the very least, the mine is off to a promising start. Development costs leveled off at $67 million. 9&apos;; below the anticipated budget.

E. Windsor Richards, London, England:—In reading this paper the most interesting point to me mas the question of the maximum percentage of phosphorus allowable in the steel rail. Mr. Colby said, and we will all agree with him, that the engineer knew, and even a steel-rail maker grants that phosphorus is the most undesirable constituent of steel. We in England have been for a long time considering a specification for the supply of steel rails. This matter has been taken up by the Institution of Civil Engineers, the Mechanical Engineers, the Iron and Steel Institute, the Institute of Naval Architects, and the Electrical Engineers. Committees have been formed,and the whole matter has received most careful attention. They arrived at last at an analysis which I will read: " The carbon is to be from 0.35 to 0.5 per cent.; the manganese from 0.7 to 1.0 per cent.; the silicon, not to exceed 0.10 per cent.; phosphorus, 0.07; and sulphur, 0.07 per cent." As to the phosphorus, which is the most important point of all in the analysis, we have for many years, and indeed until very lately, always agreed to supply steel which would not contain above 0.06 per cent. of phosphorus. Iron-ores are not quite as good now as they were formerly, and the manufacturers at the meetings of the committees referred to, tried to obtain an increase in the allowance of phosphorus. They asked the Sub-committee to agree to 0.08 per cent. of phosphorus. They tried all they possibly could to obtain that; but they failed. English engineers in Great George Street and all over England, representing the important Associa tions I have mentioned, would only agree to 0.07 per cent. and that is the maximum allowance of phosphorus. Mr. Colby is an able advocate, but with all his ability he would not have been able to persuade the English engineers to agree to 0.08 per cent.

One of the primary requirements for successful operation of an enriched gas-drive project is to control the composition of injection gas. This can become a serious and difficult problem, particularly in cases where the enrichment material is being furnished from a number of field -produced gas streams. It is possible to effect control of the injection gas composition through frequent or continuous sampling; however, this can be extremely costly and, in many cases, impractical due to laboratory requirements of time. Another alternative would be to provide a calculation technique which would be flexible and sufficiently accurate to predict composition of the liquid and gas streams of interest at any point in the system. The purpose of this paper is to discuss a technique that was used successfully on an operating enriched gas-drive project for developing information which could be used for controlling composition of the injected gas. FIELD OPERATIONS The particular field (hereafter called Example field) in the example operation being discussed is composed of four oil reservoirs (A. B, C and E) and one gas condensate reservoir (D). Casinghead gas from the oil reservoirs and gas from the gas condensate reservoir are gathered through a field gathering system as shown in Fig. I for injection into Reservoir C. The gas mixture which is recovered from the five reservoirs for injection purposes is composed of gases liberated in 19 individual separators, each operating at a separate temperature and pressure. PROPOSED CALCULATION TECHNIQUE It is well known that vapor-liquid equilibrium calculations in general use throughout the petroleum industry can be used to predict reliably the phase behavior of hydrocarbon mixtures, particularly at pressures less than 1,000 psig. It is then a simple matter to account for the material on a ComPonent basis by m&apos;&apos;ing flash and material balance calculations at each separation point in a hydrocarbon system. Accordingly, it was proposed to use vapor-liquid equilibrium and material balance cal- culations with a medium-sized electronic digital computer as a basis for developing a control procedure for use in controlling injection gas composition in the enriched gas-drive project. Although the approach is a simple one, the numerous vapor-liquid equilibrium calculations involved make the problem laborious; in this particular case, it would have been impractical to make sutficiently complete analysis without the aid of digital computing equipment. The following paper is based chiefly on work done for the North Carolina Geological Survey, and is presented here by permission of Professor J. A. Holmes, State Geologist. It represents, in a very general way, the field-results obtained during the summer months of 1893, and 1894, and part of 1895; and the portions pertaining to North Carolina are, to a certain extent, abstracts of a report shortly to be published as Bulletin No. 11 of the State Survey. Less emphasis, however, is here laid on the petrographic descriptions of the peridotites, and more detailed treatment is given to subjects pertaining to methods of mining, cleaning, and utilization of the commercial product, corundum. Some of the most extensive fields for investigation which this subject presents have been scarcely more than suggested.

OF THE 92 elements generally accepted by chemists as constituting the primary building blocks of matter, all but the very rarest have been investigated with a view to employing them in steel manufacture. The surprising thing is that so few have been found commercially acceptable. Despite the relatively small number of elements involved, the use of alloys in steel making is one of the most complicated and probably one of the least well understood of modern industrial enterprises. The action of individual elements in steel making has been described often and a profuse and somewhat acrimonious literature covers pretty much the whole field of ferroalloy ore supplies. In the middle ground between the miner and the -steel maker developments are less carefully watched by most observers and except for an occasional description of the technique of some conversion process or the tariff hearings in Congress, little is said about them. The present paper has been submitted in the hope that it will stimulate broader constructive economic thinking. It undertakes to describe in&apos; relatively nontechnical terms this great and growing though highly complex industry and to study its relations to national progress.

PETROLEUM industry forecasts are constantly made and revised but are not in the nature of predictions. Particularly in the field of demand, many of the factors are far beyond control by the producing industry. Supply reacts on demand and demand reacts on supply. Competent economists in the oil business forecasted a year ago, on the basis of experience, that demand would now be at a much lower level than it is. This increased demand increased the price of crude oil and products, and in turn those increased prices have brought forth increased supply. A reduction in demand would lead to a reduction in supply. Shortages are now world-wide, and costs of secondary importance, so if there were extra supplies in California they would be moved into what are termed "unnatural markets." For example, Argentina is in the market today for California gasoline; that is an unnatural market because of the greater transportation distances from California to Argentina than from normal sources.

CLARENCE M. HAIGHT, Franklin, N., J. (communication to the Secretary*).-In that hart of Mr. Wilson&apos;s paper describing the Gilman cut-and-fill system, a few features do not appear to be fully explained. In what way is the waste used for filling obtained? The text mentions that, if waste is encountered when driving the filling raises, these raises are stopped until the fill is needed; that seems to suggest mining the capping for fill, which might make the backs of the stopes had as the stopes approach the top of the ore. If, on the other hand, the fill is brought to the raises in cars, are the crosscuts that are necessary in ore or waste? Is the cost of this fill included in the stoping costs given?

DISCUSSION, J. R. Long presiding R. I. Jaffee (Battelle Memorial Institute, Columbus, Ohio)—The authors have written a fine and important paper, and are to be congratulated. I do not entirely follow their discussion of the relationship between the ductility of titanium and its crystal structure. Since high purity titanium is extremely ductile, being capable of cold reductions of ovei- 99 pct, its ductility cannot be unduly restricted by its hexagonal crystal structure. It is true that interstitial solid solutions of nitrogen and oxygen do have a restricting effect on ductility, but this would appear to be an alloying effect rather than a crystal structure effect. The point made by the authors concerning the relative ductility between forged and rolled titanium does not appear to be conclusive, either. It would appear that in the same condition forged material would have equivalent or better ductility than sheet material. The difference between the ductility reported for forged bar and annealed sheet in Table I may be the result of a greater degree of cold work in the as-forged condition. S. F. Radtke, R. M. Scriver, and J. A. Snyder (authors&apos; reply)—We appreciate the discussion by Dr. Jaffee. His point is well taken that the hexagonal structure of titanium does not, in itself, restrict the ductility of iodide material and, therefore, should not be limiting in this case. It is true, however, that the ductility of different grades of titanium is not necessarily related to their hexagonal structure but more likely to their orientation and composition. It is also true that the presence of small amounts of foreign elements in hexagonal metals may have more pronounced influence on ductility than a corresponding quantity in cubic metals. Average values from a large number of tests might show relatively better ductility for forged titanium than is recorded in Table I. The forged bars used in this work were tested in the annealed condition; little is known concerning the effect of forging practice on ductility in titanium metal.
